[upbeat music] Hey, everybody. It's Sven. It's Full Spectrum Cycling.
• 0:17
We're in the, uh, [laughs] black room with white curtains. [laughs] Newly christened white room with black curtains negative studio.
• 0:24
[coughs] Uh, it's a different day here in the studio today 'cause, uh, I got Tony Berger right there. Yep. Hi, Tony Berger. Hey. And playing the part of JK is Mr. Paul Galdoni. How's it going? There he is.
• 0:35
How's it going? That's P- that's JK today. That's JK? We're not saying we won't have a JK today thing, but mm. You have Matt, Matt Gates looking at you, in case you're wondering who that is.
• 0:44
Yeah, that's Matt Gates up there. Yeah, that's Matt Gates. You can punch him. Don't punch him otherwise it'll... Yeah, punch him, though. I don't know, uh, how's JK. Do I get to swear a lot?
• 0:51
Yeah, you can swear- Is that what JK does?... wherever you fucking want. I don't know. We'll see. [laughs] All right, folks. Hey, I actually thought we were gonna take a break this week, but then, uh, Mr.
• 1:02
Tony is like, "Uh, I got a guest today. Do you wanna do a show?" Like, okay, whatever. We'll do a show, I guess. Whatever. We're taking no damn breaks. Taking no damn breaks. No damn breaks.
• 1:09
No combo breakers for the, uh- Thanking the guest... oh, you got the... He has the WMSC alien shirt on. Alien Andre glow in the dark shirt today. Oh, nice.
• 1:17
Well, just because JK's down in New Orleans, we did sweat him to be the brand ambassador for WMSC down there in New Orleans. He has sent some funny pictures, too. Yeah, he's been doing a good job. He represents.
• 1:28
I wish I w- [laughs] I wish I was more a part of the station than just a donor of fat stacks of cash, but, uh- You're a volunteer... yeah, you know, I'm a volunteer blatherer of good stations. I, uh- You want a DJ?
• 1:41
Is that what you're saying? Be more of the station? It's not like... No, you know who'd be a better DJ? JK. JK. Oh, okay. Yeah, he... I mean, I'm not n- I, I don't think I'd be a bad DJ, but I think he, he just has the
• 1:52
vast experience of having already done it, plus- Oh... musical knowledge in his brain area that is very rare. Frightening. Yeah, it is- Frightening... somewhat. I mean, even Tony would be better than me.
• 2:01
No, I was a terrible DJ. I did JED on WRST, Worst Radio. In Fond du Lac? Oshkosh. By gosh. Yep. So you just went up to Oshkosh for Christmas, didn't you? Scariest- Huh?... fucking drive of my life.
• 2:16
Oh, was it snowing- Right out-... or- It was-... cold or something? I saw a, uh- You're a Wisconsin resident... right. I had my snows on and everything. Thank God. But yeah, I did. I went up- Haven't put mine on yet.
• 2:28
[laughs] I went up briefly. Sorry. I went up briefly, um, did the dinner thing with the, the right wing side of the family and... Well, all I can say is thank you for stopping at Hel's and- Yeah. Sorry...
• 2:40
bringing back the jerky. [laughs] Yeah. That's a good score. It's very exciting. I g- w- I cannot tell you how many times we've talked about Hel's on this show, but a lot. It's a lot. And if you're- Oh...
• 2:48
driving up, what is it? I-45 or 1? 41. 41 towards northern Wisconsin, you gotta stop at Hel's and grab you some beef jerkies up there, yeah?
• 2:57
We were, we were very excited to see there were cars in the parking lot, 'cause we thought there was a slim chance they might be closed for Christmas Eve. Oh. Um, but we pulled in.
• 3:04
It was bitter cold, super windy, so Molly and Daniel stayed in the car. Um, I, I can only imagine what that staff said after Cleone and I left with our order of jerky and Long Jagers, et cetera.
• 3:19
Um, Cleone was, of course, wearing the outfit that she was wearing to the right wing Christmas, which was- Oh, yeah... completely inappropriate. Inappropriate.
• 3:27
So she walks into Hel's and she's wearing a mini skirt that i- it's, it's ultra mini. Wow. And yeah, sh- I'm sure these guys had a good chuckle after we left, but- [laughs]...
• 3:36
they do know that she, he's, she's my daughter. I- she does come in with me quite a bit. Yes, yeah. So, uh, yeah, they, you know... And then the guy pointed out, "You know you can always just mail order jerky."
• 3:46
Like we don't want your daughter in here anymore? I, I, I, I... You know, we were, no, we were just like, we were bummed out 'cause they were out of, uh, gar- Ring bologna?... garlic ring bologna, 'cause it's so good.
• 3:57
What's ring bologna? Um. Just a ring? Uh, it's in a ring shape. Like a kielbasa. Yeah, but it's not- Oh... but it's not super big like you get when you're in jail kind of. No, no, no. That size.
• 4:06
It's, it's, it's, it's nice size, although I've never been in jail, so I don't know what size that is, but- Oh, okay... um, it's, it's a decent, you know, it's a fine ground. So they tie it at the ends- Yeah, yeah...
• 4:16
and it makes it a ring, and then that's- Mm-hmm... yeah, okay. It's actually tied. I gotta, I gotta tell you about my one day in jail at some point down the road. All right.
• 4:22
When I didn't get my cheese and bologna sandwich like everybody else got. Oh, man. I'll tell you about that sometime. Man. It's from trying to be a nice guy, not from being a bad guy. Man. What do I get?
• 4:32
You weren't in long enough? No fucking bologna sandwich. Oh, that's what happens. No. Okay, so I had my... So, uh, uh, long story long, uh, I sold a car to a guy.
• 4:41
I moved to California, come back, there's like 82 parking tickets on my car. [laughs] So I go to the parking ticket people down there, and I said, "Uh, I sold this car. Here's the thing, says I sold it."
• 4:52
"You're gonna have to see the judge." "Okay, well, I'll go see the judge. 82 tickets, I'm not paying for them," blah, blah, blah.
• 4:58
Go in by the judge and he's like, "Uh, we're gonna have to, uh, you know, remand this," or whatever the term is, "to push it off until next week sometime," whatever it is.
• 5:06
I go, "Uh, yeah, except I live in California and I'm leaving tomorrow." He says, "You're not leaving here until these parking tickets are paid."
• 5:14
[laughs] So I didn't get my day in court yet, so I had to sit there until my dad came down and bailed me out so that I'd appear or whatever the deal was. And I had my own cell. I'm like, "Oh, this is so great."
• 5:25
And then a lady got arrested for something and needed to be in the cell that I was in. Uh-oh. So I went in with the general population, and they're all munching on their sandwiches. I'm like, "Where's my sandwich?"
• 5:36
They're like, "You weren't here." Oh. "Can you go get me a sandwich?" "That's not how it works here." [laughs] Oh, man. I'm like, "Oh, dude." I want a sandwich. Yeah. I s- Wow, so they mix people up?
• 5:46
I didn't know they did male and female all mixed together. No, no, no. Oh. She got her own separate room, and I had to go in with the drunks- Oh... and the ne'er-do-wells- Oh...
• 5:53
instead of just being a guy who had to- Wait for a parking ticket... you know. Right. Yeah. Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. That, that same thing- Oh, man... happened to me when I sold a car to my old boss. Yeah.
• 6:02
And then I came back to Oshkosh and my mom said, "Hey- Police have been looking for you. You got, like, $280 worth of outstanding fines." And I, I go down to the police department.
• 6:11
I'm like, "I haven't owned that Saab for, like, a year." And then I went to my, the bar that I, that the guy that bought the car... I'm like, "Hey, dude." A- and I knew this guy was extremely wealthy.
• 6:21
Uh, I'm like, "You never licensed the car. You've got all these parking tickets." I'm like, "Take care of it." And yeah, two days later, no problem. He went and he went and took care of the whole thing.
• 6:31
I'm like, "Mm, okay." Right. But he did have an absolute ton of money. He was a rich kid. He was... So UW Oshkosh has a huge dyslexia program, and, um, it was founded there.
• 6:42
The studies and stuff were founded there, so- Is it, is it called a GoPrem? I don't know. Um, but there's a... Uh, we're getting really long and really deep into a stupid story, but- Yeah...
• 6:53
there's a lot of Saudi Arabians there because Saudi Arabia has a very high dyslexia problem for reasons we won't discuss now. Oh. Pavarotti's sister? That's, that's ex- Never, never mind. Sorry. That's...
• 7:02
Yes, that's what we're not bringing up. Yes, that's what it is. Um, so there's a lot of money in Oshkosh for people that are dyslexic, and this guy's dad apparently
• 7:13
invented the process that took kiln drying of pressure-treated lumber from a month to, like, six hours. So he showed up the first day of school in a Porsche in Oshkosh. I mean, uh...
• 7:25
Anyway, so he ended up- [laughs] At least he made good on it. Um, but I- Smart... I wanna switch gears and... Ha, I made a funny. I'm switching gears to talk about bicycles.
• 7:32
So you didn't sit in jail, though, is what you're saying. I did not have to sit in jail. Oh. Okay. Yeah. Well, we got, uh... Let's, uh, let's introduce everybody to Paul 'cause I- Yeah, I've never been there...
• 7:39
I don't think Paul's been on the show before, have you? No. This is- No... I didn't even know where it was located. It was- Oh, you know... yeah... it used to be in the old shop, then it was in the new shop.
• 7:46
Then it was over there, now it's over here, and, uh- Yeah. It gets around. Yeah, it does get around. This is show 195- It's a nice little space... of this little one here. Yeah. I know. Isn't this- Wow...
• 7:54
isn't this little room awesome? I- Yeah... it's just like, it's like the manage... It's, it's the only room with air conditioning- Yeah... in case we need that. Oh, yeah. In the whole place.
• 8:02
So just a quick background on Paul. Paul, how is it going? Uh, it goes c- pretty good. Uh- Paul rides bikes. Paul has a tandem. Yeah. I'm, I'm- I, I really enjoy tand bicycles.
• 8:11
Um, I have a, a Wheels by Larry, uh, I can't remember what his last name is, but, uh- That's a c-... Larry, Larry Diamond, that's his name. That's a pretty sick bike.
• 8:21
He's out in, uh, Northbrook, Illinois, and, uh, it's a pretty nice tandem. And then I got one of those, uh, Burley Duets- Yeah... uh, tandem, extra large size. Not extra large, but it's just a large bike. It's big boy.
• 8:31
But it's a nice solid ride, man. It's just a nice cruise. Good. So who normally- And Tony got me into tandems. I don't know if I can tell this story. I don't- Tandem Tony? Sure. Sure, yeah. Tell the story.
• 8:39
We got nothing better to do here. Well, him and his wife c- you know, him and, uh, Molly couldn't ride a tandem, uh, so he said, "You want this tandem?" Why couldn't you ride a tandem? And, uh, I said sure.
• 8:50
I took the tandem, and my wife and I, we figured it [laughs] out. We're still together. That's what I was... That was my first question when I heard you were gonna be on the show. I go- It's a good relationship tester...
• 8:58
well, I know, I know Paul rides a tandem. I'm like, how come he's not divorced yet? Yeah, they call him a divorce maker. [laughs] Yeah, no doubt about it. I mean- Widow maker, no. Divorce maker, yes...
• 9:06
and I'll get him too. If I would've spent five more miles on that bike with Molly, we would've been divorced. Yeah, yeah. So you've never been divorced. I've never been divorced. It's understandable because it's, um,
• 9:15
you gotta know what to do, man. Well- It's not just get on it and go... she screamed. But I'm able to pick up... Like, sometimes I'll pick up people on the street and then see if they wanna ride.
• 9:24
And what I do is I explain to them first how this works. Like I say, "I'm the boss. Listen to what I say. If you don't wanna... If you wanna stop pedaling, don't just stop pedaling." Right.
• 9:33
"You gotta say, 'I wanna stop pedaling,' and then we can stop pedaling. You can't just do what you wanna do." So there's no free wheel on the rear passenger? There's no free wheel, so it's, uh- They haven't made...
• 9:42
I mean, that, that's a relatively new invention for tandems. Yeah, where the, where one person can do all the work and the other person- Yeah... can just kick back.
• 9:47
All the r- you know, of course, all the really nice bikes have that on there, like I don't know what those nice, uh, tandems are called. Uh- Commotions and stuff. Yeah, Commot- Santanas and things. Santana. Yes.
• 9:55
Commotion, Santana, yes. Exactly. Uh, definitely the Commotion, Commotions. Like that belt drive Commotion we saw up in Port that day. What a ridiculous idea for b- That had to be- But it's beautiful...
• 10:07
15 plus thousand dollars worth of bike. Wow. Oh, yeah. Belts, man, on a tandem. Yeah. And a Rohloff. And a Rohloff hub and all. It was, it had a breakaways. It folded. What? It, it boxed. Yeah. It split in three.
• 10:20
S&S couplers. Yeah. It's fun to watch 'cause I like Paul 'cause he rides his tandem- Was that a Commotion?... a lot by himself. Commotion, yeah. That made that... Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I've seen those. Yeah.
• 10:28
With, with the S&S couplers, that's real common. They're Oregon, Commotion? Yeah. Yeah, I think they're out that way. I think you're right that- Yeah, yeah... I think you're right about that. I don't think they're Cali.
• 10:35
I'm pretty sure they're somewhere in Portland- Yeah, I think, yeah, they're-... or around, like by where Vanilla was. Oregon. They're a little bit greener- Oregon... and yeah. Yeah. Paul also plays a few instruments.
• 10:45
Yeah. Right on. I'm gonna... You know what I'm gonna do? We'll get back to Paul in a little bit. I'm gonna push a button real quick. I'll do a Commotion. Oh, what's going on here? We'll push, we'll push this button.
• 10:54
Hey, welcome to the radio program. Caller, who do we have on the line? Dave Fucking Lawns. DF- [laughs] DFL. What's up, my brother? Dave Fucking Lawns. Not much. What's up with you? Uh, just talking to Mr.
• 11:08
Paul Taldone and, uh, Tony Berger- How's it going?... and, uh- Oh, his parents have a tandem. Yep. They have a- They had. Oh, yeah. Or maybe still have. They might still have it.
• 11:17
Oh, yeah, Dave, what's the status of that- What?... tandem your parents had? A recumbent tandem. Unfortunately, there's only one parent left. Right. Oh, sad to hear that. Yeah. Unfortunate, but true.
• 11:27
And at things like- What? Reg, do they still have that tandem, that recumbent tandem? Oh, yeah. How long is that thing? Yeah. You want it? [laughs] Oh. It's a Vision recumbent tandem. It's, like, 30 feet long.
• 11:38
Yeah, it's the size of a school bus, the thing. With, with, with or without the bob trailer? [laughs] Oh. Oh my God. Um, good Lord, I don't know, 15 feet long with the trailer probably. [laughs] That's massive.
• 11:49
It is massive. Um, yeah, I don't even know. Uh, but yeah, it's still in the garage or the car hole. You want it? And it's... I think I'm thinking about to get rid of it.
• 11:59
I have absolutely no use for it, but- I don't have a car hole big enough to put it in. I'd have to see what it looks like. [laughs] Take, take some pictures. I'll, I'll... I could Google it.
• 12:07
Oh, yeah, or take pictures with Tony- Yeah, it's a, it's a, it's a-... and then Tony can pass it on to me... it's a tricycle. It's a- No, it's a two-wheeler. We discussed this. Oh, it's, oh, it is a two.
• 12:14
Yeah, that's right. That's a two-wheeler, yeah. That's a two-wheeler. Well, it's a three if you count the bob. But it's really long. Yeah. I just wanna see if it's like those- Yeah...
• 12:19
those weird ones or the good-looking ones. It's good looking. And then, uh, yeah, I don't know What's up, Dave? Are you, are you riding or did that, that go by the wayside? No, I bailed 'cause of the weather.
• 12:32
Yeah, I'm- It's warm... I, I was wondering how, uh, okay, so it was 78 below last weekend and now it's, like, 50. Yeah. And we had winter in Wisconsin. Yeah. It was four days long. You're like- [laughs]...
• 12:44
forget about it. It's 50 degrees today, and all the trails are starting to get- Yeah... mucky and sloppy and stuff. Yeah, the roads are shit, too. Oh, oh, oh, goddammit. Hey, fucker.
• 12:54
[laughs] Sorry, the cats are running off with my food again. [laughs] Ap- ap- apparently my, apparently my cats like bacon-wrapped Oreos. Oh, that's great. I'm not even sure that's a thing. Bacon-wrapped Oreos?
• 13:04
That sounds disturbing, dude. It is a thing. We've, um, we, we did, uh, the chocolate Oreos wrapped in bacon- Oh, yeah... and baked them. I- I remember seeing that on a show somewhere, yeah. That sounds horrid. It does.
• 13:16
Can you microwave them? Yeah, they're pretty good. You know, I'd get them... Oh, no, we bake them. We've smoked them before. Um, but we baked them yesterday. Wow. Um,
• 13:28
well, while we were air frying a fresh turkey that was killed less than 24 hours before we cooked it, that was pretty damn good. Oh, yeah. Um- Was it an East Side turkey from over there on Lake Drive? Yeah.
• 13:39
[laughs] I don't know. 'Cause that's perfectly legal. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. I mean, if it steps out in front of your car, what do you do, you know? [laughs] Yeah. Turkey dinner, baby.
• 13:51
Can't, can't just leave it, can't just leave it there. You gotta take it home and cook it. [laughs] I'm snacking on some of Paul's jerky now. [laughs] It's pretty good. Oh, yeah? Pretty good, Paul. Yeah.
• 14:00
You made it up, hmm? Might have my first round. We'll see what happens. Making some jerky over here. Could be. [laughs] A dehydrator or oven? The jerky of, uh, Milwaukee. Yeah. Uh, dehydrator, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
• 14:09
I, we, we, we, we broke down- Yeah... and got one for, uh, Christmas. Nice. Can we say Christmas on this show? Yeah, we can. Or do you want to say Christmas? Sure. Nice. Cut, cut in the- I'm a recovering Catholic.
• 14:17
[laughs] Yeah, I, I have a dehydrator. I- I've never done jerky in it yet, though. What do you do in it? Just, uh, fruits.
• 14:26
[laughs] It's good for, like, if you buy a bunch of bananas and they start going a little soft on you, then you can throw them in there and- Oh, so you make, like, banana chips then? Yeah.
• 14:35
[laughs] Do we have another caller? Not yet. Damn. Could you make kale chips with it, then? I wonder if you could do kale chips. Dehydrate kale. Yeah, you can put anything in there. Yeah. Yeah. What's kale?
• 14:46
Kale is, like, a, a green leafy vegetable. Does, does that make kale taste good, actually? Kale. Uh, yeah, you put, like, uh, salt, pepper, and Parmesan cheese on them. Oh, fuck no.
• 14:54
And then you put them in the oven for, like, I don't know how long at 400 degrees, and then, uh, they get crispy and you got kale chips. You know, that's, uh, what people eat around here. Hmm. I'd try that, I guess.
• 15:05
Kale chips. It's pretty good. Should try it. Um, yeah. You know, the pa- parm- the, the Parmesan cheese. Right on.
• 15:10
So, uh, New Year's Day is coming up here in a couple of days and, uh, I hear that you're in Face- It is... you're in Facebook jail again. Yes, I am.
• 15:19
[laughs] So, do I need to do an annual Yusa Picture ride post on the book face for the festivities of going down? I don't know. If you want to. I- Pretty sure everybody already knows we're- Everybody knows the routine...
• 15:32
we're already going down there anyway, but. Right, right, right. Also- Yeah... uh, Tony Burger, uh, l- related this earlier, and I also confirmed it by going to The Swinging Door- As did I...
• 15:43
and talked to Shelley, and they are gonna be open on New Year's Day, which is Sunday, which they're normally not open, but we have to do our timing correctly. Yeah. They're opening at 10:00.
• 15:52
Yeah, what, what time's the, uh- But we can't go get food until afternoon... what, what- Okay. We can do that. Yeah. What, what, what time's the sports ball game? Is there gonna be a bunch of cheeseheads there?
• 16:01
Sports ball game's at 3:25, so- We can get out of there by then... yeah. Okay. So we should beat the cheeseheads. All right. Yeah, yeah. We'll go watch the dips do the dip.
• 16:09
We'll go down to the door and it's gonna be f- Oh, yeah... it's gonna be 45 to 50 degrees on Sunday- All right... so we could even sit outside if we have to. And why is it gonna be that warm?
• 16:18
'Cause winter's over in Wisconsin. Oh, because I bought my set of tires from them. [laughs] 'Cause Al Gore invented global warming. Right. Thank God for that guy. Yeah.
• 16:26
Hey, speaking of Al Gore and, a- a- and, uh, global warming- That was a good idea... I saw a photo from, uh, our friend, uh, Gold Mads over there to thefatbike.com of the, um, Pink Floyd rock
• 16:41
is totally not underwater anymore at all, and it's a good 10 to- Whoa... 20 feet from said rock. So going north on a port- Wow... looks really doable, obviously. Uh, once you get past the abalone train.
• 16:54
Mud Creek might actually be visible. Yeah, you m- might have to go over the, the slide or whatever. Oh, the slide. Yeah. Yeah, whatever. I- I'm just saying that- It's great...
• 17:01
it, that rock was underwater not that long ago. Right. And that thing is at least four feet tall. Mm-hmm. That's amazing. Yeah. Yeah. We- we're getting back to 2012 or '13 levels. Now we need some freeze.
• 17:12
Mud Creek might actually be visible right now. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe, if we can get around that one big, uh, point where that would close out normally, but yeah. Now we need some cold weather to make it rideable. Hmm.
• 17:24
Yeah, cold weather would be nice. No ice, no shift. And guess what? We're not having any cold weather until at least the middle of January. Yeah. That's why I think winter's over already, but- Yeah... little, uh- Yeah...
• 17:33
got a, got little sweats going with the, uh, pepper. Oh, nice. Oh, good. It's working. Yeah. It's not that peppery, but it's, it's tasty. Oh, no, I thought it was just- Yeah.
• 17:41
Well, that, well, you know, I, I have this cold, so I can't taste anything. Oh, whoa. Um, but what I w- when I did eat a piece today, I was like, "Oh, well, I know it's hot," because, like, that's all I can feel.
• 17:51
But yeah, I can't taste what it tastes like, so. You don't sound too bad. Is that your radio voice? Yeah. Or are you just trying to get- This is my radio voice pretty good, huh?...
• 17:57
trying to get hot chicks with that voice or? Yeah. Hot chicks. [laughs] Hot chicks, yeah. [laughs] I love my hot chicks. So if, uh, if anybody has, uh, did you or- order those shifters yet, Dave?
• 18:09
Um, I'm watching a pair on, uh, a couple pairs on eBay. Um- He's, he's going all the way back to the three-by-nine shifters... and they're both 11 speed. Three-by-nine. Yeah. Remember how long ago those were something?
• 18:22
They were a thing back in the day. Remember that? The mega range. XT? Well, yeah, on the, I, I, I still run three by nine on a couple of bikes, um, like the beach bike. Um-
• 18:32
So I, I, I have some of those thumbies on there, the new thumbies that came out with the Moonlander and all that stuff Oh, the microshifts? Uh, but... Yeah, those are kinda sloppy. I don't know.
• 18:41
So I was thinking if I find a pair of, uh, Rapid clicks for a decent price, which I think I did. I don't know. I, I'm gonna- But you can run those- He, he wanted like 65. He wanted 65.
• 18:53
I was gonna offer him 55, but then I watched them, and then like two minutes later he sent me an offer for 55, [laughs] so I might counter offer with 50 and see what he says. [laughs] Oh, man. I don't know.
• 19:05
I like my microshift 12-speed shifter. Well- That thing works really well And you can- Thumbie... I have the, the three by 10 microshifters Are- And I run them friction. Yeah? Oh, they're... Are they trigger or thumbies?
• 19:17
They're thumbies. Yeah. And I run them friction-based. Pretty nice. Yeah. You got 30 years on that thing? Uh, that bike's long gone. That was my- [laughs]... the only fixation I ever owned. Ah.
• 19:27
I agree with you on friction. You turned me on to that, and there's, there's... That my one tandem that I have, it has a choice. And you're like, "Oh, just leave it on friction." It's way easier.
• 19:35
And man, it is just a smooth shift. Well, that's like a six speed, isn't it? You gotta feel it. So it's even easier. Uh, it's- I, I like them- No, I think it's eight. I think...
• 19:41
it's, they're just a little floppy I might be wrong. Sorry You gotta like overshift, stuff like that. Yeah, you gotta feel it. It's more feel. It's like, "Okay, yeah."
• 19:46
But that's what, yeah, when you're running them indexed- But when it works... you have to do that. It works, yeah. But if you run them- But I, I think, I think I bent my stupid derailleur hanger again. No. You?
• 19:53
Yeah, really? Yeah. [laughs] So what did you do, breathe on it? It's shocking. I don't know. Those, some of those- Yeah...
• 19:58
some of those Nova hangers from that, when we were doing them on the Teesdale frames, they were super soft. And it's like, "Well, it saves your frame." And you're like, "Yeah, but it bends when I breathe on it." Right.
• 20:08
So is that good or bad? [laughs] Right. So, yeah. Well, that's why I always carry a backup, so. Oh, yeah, for sure. Yeah.
• 20:16
Well- And also in case I'm derbying with Patrick Ziegel and he takes out my fricking derailleur again. Yeah, there's that. There's that.
• 20:22
I got his, uh [laughs] I got some Odyssey triple traps that, uh, Ziegel parts keep showing up in the shop. I'm still looking for his headlight. Nice. 'Cause the, uh- Yeah...
• 20:32
'cause the, 'cause the handsome shop bike went back to him a few weeks ago, and I'm like, "I know that there was a headlight," and then I forgot about the pedals.
• 20:38
I'm like, "Oh, yeah, these are Ziegel's pedals," and blah, blah, blah. So he said something about him- Yeah... falling and hitting his head, and he should wear a helmet again after riding that bike the first time, so.
• 20:49
I don't know. Yeah, kinda like we wear our helmets and shit. The way he rides, he should have a helmet on 24/7. This is true. Yeah. He's- Right. As m- as much as we drink when we ride, we should be wearing helmets, huh?
• 20:58
[laughs] Yes, yes. Uh, but yeah, speaking of Ziegel, I was at, um, one of the, uh, Madison Brazen Dropout swap meets, and I found a pair of Power Grips, the extra long ones for winter boots.
• 21:11
[laughs] And I bought them for like 5 bucks, and he, he really, really, really wanted them, so he gave me 10 bucks for them, but now I want them back. [laughs] Hey, that, well- You had me at winning...
• 21:20
by the way, that Braze- Yeah. I ended up giving-... that Brazen, that show's coming up pretty quick here. It's just after the new year, isn't it? Like the- It is coming up, yeah...
• 21:26
like the weekend after New Year's or something? It's very soon, and one- Yeah... of the biggest swap meets in the Midwest, for sure. First, yeah, second weekend in January or anything. And now they take cards.
• 21:33
Oh, that's danger zone. Yeah, he- Danger zone. Oh. Right? That's where my friend Kyle showed up with a- Um, yeah... stunning Gunner. Hopefully, hopefully it's the second weekend in January, 'cause...
• 21:43
Well, the first weekend in January there's a mega LEGO show in Milwaukee, so that's, you know. [laughs] But we're gonna go up to the UP that weekend, but I'm like, "Oh, sorry, can't go that weekend."
• 21:51
[laughs] Gotta go to LEGOs. All right. And, and of course Dino, who loves LEGOs, was like, uh, "Okay, fine." Asshole. "Just rule your life around LEGOs." I'm like, "Yep, exactly." Yep.
• 22:02
[laughs] Get in the back seat where you belong. And Sal would get it. [laughs] Yeah. That's right. All right, dude. Uh, so, so- That was awesome... uh, uh, we're gonna meet, uh...
• 22:12
Uh, what we're, I think we're gonna do for the, uh, the New Year's Day ride is meet at Nomad at like 10:30-ish- Yeah... and- Yeah...
• 22:19
get everybody together there, roll down for the dips, doing the dip at noon, and then, uh- And some hot buttered rum... hot buttered rum. I'm sure hoping that Scanlon brings some butter. Scanlon's gotta bring some.
• 22:29
Yeah, he is. Oh, wasn't that good? Oh, my God. Yeah, he makes a mean hot buttered rum. Is, is anybody doing the dip? Yeah, that's, yeah, definitely show up in North Milan. Hell, no. I, I- Haven't been there in forever...
• 22:35
it's gonna be 50 degrees. It won't be too bad. [laughs] I've fallen in that lake too many times to not- Yeah... wanna jump in there on my own. Yeah, the, the air is gonna be 50 degrees. Right. Yeah.
• 22:42
The water's still gonna be like- Yeah... 12. No, the water's 50. Fuck that. I guarantee you the water's the same as the air right now. Eh. But anyway, all right, Davey. I'm actually thinking about riding my summer fatty.
• 22:53
Right on. Yeah, I'm- I'm, I'm, if I'm gonna ride, thinking about, thinking about riding the Ape. I don't even think I'll ride the winter bike. Me too. Me too.
• 22:58
Yeah, I'm getting my, I'm putting my Ape together tomorrow, so, uh, uh, that, I'm riding that, and there's no reason not to. It's gonna be a bunch of monkeys. All right, Dave. Huh? We're gonna- There we go...
• 23:07
uh, let you go and finish this, because by gosh, we almost killed a whole half hour already. So thank you very much. [laughs] Okie dokie. [laughs] I will, uh, see you Sunday, then. Right on. Sounds good.
• 23:16
DaveLunds.com, baby. All right, bye. Bye. Ciao. That was DaveLunds.com, everybody.
• 23:21
And since we're on the subject of bikes and, and discussing things about bikes, and unfortunately this 50-degree weather for New Year's Day, uh,
• 23:32
I'm, I'm just saying I know Sam thinks I'm a, I'm a slacker, and I'm not gonna argue with him, but he totally claims that those shitty snow tires I bought from him are slow because of me. No, those are slow- And-...
• 23:44
because they're shitty. Yeah. [laughs] And now that I've put the t- those CST, CTS- CST Toboggans... CSE Toboggans on- Inexpensive as hell... and I put them to 20 PSI, they- Little high...
• 23:55
they ride so much faster than the other ones. It's just like it, it's, the difference in effort is amazing. Yeah.
• 24:03
Well- D- dropping down to about 15, you'll get comfort zone, and you won't really lose much in the speedy zone, if any. I'm... Yeah, I'm, I just want to get them to seal. Yeah, yeah, for sure. The wire- Absolutely...
• 24:12
wire bead in the rim. Yeah. They're, um, I think they're under, they're like n- 89 bucks retail- 89 bucks... or something. Yeah. I mean, they're not bad, if you can still get them.
• 24:20
I'm not even sure what tires you can get these days. Another, uh, Gomez shout-out, 'cause I did read that story there- Right... uh, that trying to source tires is still a huge, huge issue. Nightmare.
• 24:32
Yeah, because I don't know, eh-... trying to get fat bike stuff. Guess what? I, it was a fad. Right. They're not making the shit anymore. It's all gone. Yeah.
• 24:40
Or they are, and they're, they haven't received the stuff back in stock yet. I'm not sure. But yeah, hey, if you can find tires right now, buy them. If you can find snow right now, send it this way. [laughs] Uh, yeah.
• 24:54
Here's a, here's something I'm looking for. Two years, two and a half years maybe even, Soma Tradesman. You know that Tradesman? Yeah. It's a little tire in front- Yeah... tire in the back.
• 25:02
Got a thing of- Still doesn't come in stock? Guess what I got? Wheels for one and a rack for one. Guess what I don't have? The frame. The rest of the thing. [laughs] Yeah, the frame.
• 25:09
I've got everything to build the thing, but no frame. Are, are- It's-... you guys ever gonna make this thing again? Hey, call out to you, Soma guys. It's, it's not the same, but the Velo Orange 20-inch wheeled,
• 25:19
like- So do you say velodrome when you go to a place where they race bikes? I, I know it's, it's Velo Orange. [laughs] Just checking. Velo Orange, uh, mini...
• 25:28
The 20-inch frame is- But that's the, that's, that's the one that has 20 inches on both ends. Right. I mean- Yeah, the Neutrino or something... it's like a, yeah... it's not, it's something like that...
• 25:35
it's a great, looks like a great touring setup- Yeah, it's not a Neutrino... on 20-inch wheels.
• 25:39
By the way, Microshift or someone, I think it's Microshift, makes a really short derailleur specifically for a bike like that. With a 20-inch? Yeah. Imagine having a long cage derailleur on there.
• 25:48
You'd be scraping it like a lowrider. [laughs] Right. [singing] Me, me, me, me, me, me, me. Ha, ha, ha, meow, meow. That kind of thing. Yeah. Interesting.
• 25:58
Yeah, that's a very intriguing setup that I would, wouldn't mind checking out. How much is that? The frame and fork is 8- I'm like, yeah, it's probably a G800 to 1,000. It's kinda made- It's not cheap...
• 26:09
to be a parts bike. Like, you're supposed to buy the frame and fork and then put it together- Yeah, yeah... with the parts you have. But- Yeah, it's very cool... who has 20-inch wheels laying around? Yeah. You know?
• 26:17
BMX guys. Some guy. You know? Well, with, with gears though. With gears. Right, with gears. Right? Yeah, hubbed, you know. Yeah, 'cause I think it's a 135 rear dropouts. It's a nice setup. It's a really...
• 26:28
And every, I get it probably every three weeks I get a teaser from them in my email. Yeah. I'm like, "Ah." Well, I think, uh, I think Fixie Dave has built one at some point, if not for him, for someone.
• 26:38
I'm kinda curious about it too. You know, that and it's, it's, it's pretty interesting. It's...
• 26:44
That and I'm, once again I got another enticement from Detroit Bikes and $535 gets you a US-made steel framed three speed internal. We should have them advertise on the show.
• 26:58
I mean, that's, that's, that's a US-made bike for 550 bucks. Mm, frame made, assembled in the United States of America with American and sourced parts. Uh, the steel is claimed to be American for the frame.
• 27:13
I believe everything else is, you know, Shimano, Tektro- Oh, sure. Yeah... the, the usual. Yeah. Here's something- But that's still... here's something to close the show out with.
• 27:20
Uh, by the way, Paul, thanks for, you know, being here. Oh, yeah, it was a pleasure. I mean, we haven't really talked much. [glass clinks] No, that's okay. Thank God they... Oh, we haven't even got top of the hill yet.
• 27:27
[glass clinks] You gave me a really short trip. [glass clinks] It's a short hill. All right, top of the hill everybody. [glass clinks] And it was- Uh, if Paul could-... last week's beer...
• 27:32
you can reach down in the thing and grab the beers from the, uh- Oh, yeah. Yeah. But we, we just are, we're, we're having a Dankful right now. Yeah, I think these came from- Me-... D- Dimorphic across the, uh, way there.
• 27:43
What's that? These? These. No, these. Uh, those are Vain from Black Husky. Oh, Black Husky Vain. Oh, God. [laughs] Yeah, sorry about that. I knew you were gonna- Yeah, you, you know how much- [coughs]...
• 27:52
you know how much Black Husky makes me stupid. Yeah. Well, here's the story with this beer, 'cause I called Tim out on it and he finally admitted it. He claims this is 6.8 ABV. 6.8, yeah. Uh-oh.
• 28:02
He- You're, you're saying this on a live recording... he absolutely lies like the day is long. It's like closer to 9. Oh. He finally retested it and he's like, "It's, it's like w- well over 8." That's a little bit off.
• 28:15
Yeah. That's why I had three of them one day and could barely ride my bike home. Yeah. Yeah. Well, it's good beer though, so. And then I crashed. And it's also kind of burpy beer. Yeah. Or in Tony's case, poopy beer.
• 28:25
Gassy beer. Mm. Uh, so here's one thing I wanted to touch on before we get rid of everybody here is Tony's 365 day challenge. Tell us, tell us, tell us about that. Every day.
• 28:38
I did it in, I thought I did it in 2013, that's why I was bringing it back, but it turned out after I got this, the one day I was on Facebook in the last like three weeks, it popped up and said, "You have a memory."
• 28:47
And it was my, "Well, gee, I only missed one day, and I missed one day 'cause Cleo was sick," so it was 2014. So yeah, I'm gonna go for every day again, regardless of the weather.
• 28:57
What helps that I have a, a job that's a short commute now.
• 28:59
And so- [coughs] Plus I'll be able to work from home a few days, so that'd be great to get out at lunch and when it's sunny out and shit, I'm not, you know, like in the winter.
• 29:08
I can actually do a couple of, couple of miles like that. But yeah, I'll ride my bike every day. Fuck, why not? Anyone wanna do it with me? I, well, I can start out on January 1st. All right.
• 29:17
I'll get a head, I'll get a hug- [laughs]... headstart on day one. Yeah. And we'll see where it goes from there. I usually do the week run up, so I ride every day this week too.
• 29:26
Well, I mean, can I ride around inside the building? Yeah. That still counts. Yeah. You just gotta ride a bike. Just gotta ride a bike. No, it seems like a- Before we got on...
• 29:32
A- actually, the best part about that was I made the, the statement that I was gonna ride my bike every day I was in North America, because we did have a month-long trip planned to Costa Rica. Oh.
• 29:42
So literally Joshua picked us up to take us to the airport. It's 5:00 in the morning. We're getting all the stuff lugged into the car when I'm like, "Oh, shit, I'll be right back."
• 29:51
And I ran and grabbed a bike and I just rode around the block a couple of times, and Josh was like, "You're an idiot." And- [laughs]
• 29:57
And on the way back from Costa Rica, we had a layover and we got stuck in Houston for way too long, and I had to run through the airport to get to our connecting flight. I did a full on OJ Simpson.
• 30:10
I hurdled someone's luggage. Um, we got to the, this long line and I looked at Molly, I'm like, "We're not gonna make it."
• 30:18
The long line apparently is all these people are together, and the guy looks at us, he's like, "You guys gonna miss a flight?" And we're like, "Yeah." They all turn, let us all through. We get to the flight.
• 30:29
It was really funny. Right before I get on the flight I'm like, "I'll be back in Milwaukee at 11:30. I'll get my lap in if anyone wants to join me." [laughs] And I was like, "Just meet me along the way."
• 30:39
And I got halfway through the first Riverwest 24 lap- And I see Joe on the corner on his bike. I'm like, "You're not seriously here to do a lap with me, are you?" He's like, "Yeah, why not?"
• 30:49
So it was a great, we got, I got, every day I was in North America, I got a lap in that night, too, and we end up going to Rest In Peace Public House, had a couple of beers, went home. Like, cool. Right on. Yeah.
• 30:58
Hey, do either of you guys ride skate parks? Uh, no. Or did you ever? I have. I have. Oh, all right. I mean, I have, yes, but I wasn't a rider.
• 31:05
I fell, I was a faller, that's [laughs] So I don't know if this is like Tell Tony, uh, 'cause the guy's name is Peter. [coughs] I think, I don't know if it's Verdoni or Verdone. Oh, okay.
• 31:13
But he, he's a designer, he's an engineering nerd kinda guy, and he's in the bike space a lot, but he's designing new skateboard trucks, and I thought, they, somebody's actually designing a new skateboard truck? A truck?
• 31:25
Yeah. Because he wanted a truck that you can ride urban and in, I don't know if you've, if you ride, you gotta watch out for rocks and cracks- Yeah, yeah... and all sorts of stupid shit. And the, and the road, yeah.
• 31:35
So he's working on the geometry so it's not as stressful to ride in the city. Oh, sign me up. Sign me up. Yeah, right, exactly. So I, I think he's 3D printing these things to test them. Wow.
• 31:47
So he's on Gen Far, I got a link in the show notes to check it out if you wanna see what he's up to, but- Cool... check out his bike stuff, too, 'cause he's definitely deep in the bike space. And, uh- Where's he from?
• 31:57
I, you know, that's a good question. I kinda just ran across this. I, I, I've known about him for years, but don't kn- he's out west somewhere. I don't know. Oregon. Makes sense. Let's say Oregon. Oregon. I don't know.
• 32:07
[laughs] Okay, yeah, Oregon. Or somewhere else, I have no idea. Yeah. We'll learn more about, uh, Peter and his exploits because
• 32:15
if we're gonna redo the Ape, I want somebody competent to do the 3D renderings and the, and the engineering drawings for it, so
• 32:23
might have to give old Peter a call and say, "Hey, bro, can you hook a brother up with the frame?" Make it look nice. Frame drawings. I, I mean, I, I have, I have the basic design already done.
• 32:33
It just, I don't have the AutoCAD or the Revit or whatever the- Right... current- Yeah... thing is, and no SolidWorks, no- AutoCAD... no 3D stuff. Nah. So anyway, uh, I guess that's it, everybody.
• 32:45
Thanks, Paul, for not- Sure, yeah... you know, sucking the show up too bad over there. Yeah, I had a good time. And, uh, thanks for the jerky. Yeah. Yeah, we hope you enjoy it. Jerky. Tony, thanks for being a jerky.
• 32:53
I'm always a jerky. Yeah. I guess we'll do this next week. Uh, JK will be back from Nowland's, and- Nowland's... hopefully he has something to talk about. Um, yeah. Better. Better? All right, everybody. Bye. Bye.
• 33:05
  [upbeat rock music]
