- 0:00Let's meet together in God's Word in the Book of Revelation
- 0:03chapter 15. Revelation chapter 15, What you
- 0:12and I have before us today is the shortest chapter in the
- 0:16entire Book of Revelation, but don't mistake its brevity for
- 0:24insignificance. Last time we were together in
- 0:29this book, we examine the closing verses of Revelation
- 0:32chapter 14, and in it we discovered that God has given us
- 0:39a preview of the final judgments that He will unleash upon
- 0:44mankind. Namely, they were a prelude to
- 0:49the seven bowls of God's wrath, the final series of His justice
- 0:58against an evil world before the return of the Son of God.
- 1:02Now, as we come to chapter 15, we arrive at their introduction.
- 1:07In other words, the trailer for these judgments has ended, and
- 1:12the opening scene now begins. But when you read this chapter
- 1:17carefully, you'll notice that John is doing something much
- 1:20more profound than setting the stage for the culmination of
- 1:24God's manifest justice. There seems to be a weaving of
- 1:32other things taking place, a profound picture that he is
- 1:38putting together. And it's my prayer that we will
- 1:41seek to capture it in our time together this afternoon.
- 1:45And the best way to start is by just reading the entire chapter.
- 1:49It's very short as you know, So let's start here in verse one of
- 1:54Revelation 15. Then I saw another sign in
- 1:58heaven, great and amazing, 7 angels with 7 plagues, which are
- 2:05the last, for with them the wrath of God is finished.
- 2:09And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire,
- 2:14and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the
- 2:17number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass, with
- 2:20harps of God in their hands. And they sing the song of Moses,
- 2:26the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and
- 2:30amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty.
- 2:33Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations.
- 2:37Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name for You alone.
- 2:41Our holy all nations will come and worship you for your for
- 2:46your righteous acts have been revealed.
- 2:49After this I looked and the sanctuary of the Tent of Witness
- 2:52in Heaven was opened. And out of the sanctuary came
- 2:55the seven angels with the seven plagues, clothed in pure bright
- 2:59linen with golden sashes around their chest.
- 3:02And one of the four living creatures gave to the seven
- 3:04angels 7 golden bowls full of the wrath of God, who lives
- 3:08forever and ever. And the sanctuary was filled
- 3:11with smoke from the glory of God and from his power.
- 3:14And no one could enter the sanctuary until the seven
- 3:18plagues of the seven angels were finished.
- 3:23Lord, we ask that You would do a work in our hearts as You did to
- 3:28Your servant Titus. We read in Your word that Paul
- 3:35confessed gladly that You put it into the heart of Titus to have
- 3:39the same earnest care for the Corinthians that he had.
- 3:43And Lord, we see a promise in that truth that You can take our
- 3:46hearts and put in it what You desire.
- 3:49So Lord, as your church, we extend our hearts to you.
- 3:52We say, put in these hearts your love, a love for you, a love for
- 3:56the Word, a love for the church, a love for the lost, a love for
- 4:01that which is holy. And use this message to
- 4:06accomplish that. We ask these things in Jesus
- 4:09name, Amen. A lot of imagery here is
- 4:13familiar to us, isn't it? We've seen echoes of this
- 4:17throughout the Book of Revelation, and yet there is
- 4:20something very unique, one element in what we just saw that
- 4:25stands out, a reference to Moses that seems a little strange.
- 4:34Moses doesn't appear before this, and Moses doesn't show up
- 4:39after this in the Book of Revelation.
- 4:43But John is not only making reference to the man Moses, he
- 4:49tells us specifically here in verse three that they sang the
- 4:53song of Moses. So it's less about him bringing
- 4:57our attention to the person and more about us remembering an
- 5:02event. We know exactly where the song
- 5:06of Moses was sung, and we'll get to that in a moment.
- 5:08But this clear reference is absolutely essential to
- 5:14unlocking other allusions in this prophetic passage.
- 5:20When you see this, you understand that there are other
- 5:23details around it, that when you put it together, it forms a
- 5:27grand and familiar picture. And that's what I want us to
- 5:32see. Keep the song of Moses in the
- 5:34back of your mind, and let's look over very quickly the
- 5:37verses that we just read. Look at verse one again and I
- 5:41think that as we read this, light bulbs are going to go off
- 5:44verse one. Then I saw another sign in
- 5:47heaven, great and amazing, 7 angels with seven what plagues.
- 5:55Verse 2 And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled
- 6:01with fire, and also those who had conquered the beast and its
- 6:05image and a number of its name standing beside the sea.
- 6:09The ESC writes beside because the Greek word EPI is very
- 6:13elastic. It can mean beside, before, on.
- 6:16So some of your translations say they were standing on the sea,
- 6:19but the ESB renders it beside. Standing beside the sea of glass
- 6:24with harps of God in their hands.
- 6:27Look at verse 3 and they sing the song of Moses, the CERN of
- 6:33God, and the song of the Lamb sang.
- 6:37Let's go over to verse 5. After this I looked and the
- 6:41sanctuary of the Tent of Witness in heaven was opened.
- 6:44Other transitions say the Temple of the Tabernacle of the
- 6:47Testimony. This is a clear picture and
- 6:50reference to the Tabernacle, verse 6.
- 6:54And out of the sanctuary came the seven angels with the seven
- 6:57plagues, clothed in pure bright linen with golden sashes around
- 7:03their chest. In other words, they're dressed
- 7:05like priests. Finally, verse 8.
- 7:11And the sanctuary was filled with smoke from the glory of God
- 7:15and from his power. No one could enter the sanctuary
- 7:18until the seven plagues of the seven angels were finished.
- 7:22So think about this with me. Plagues, deliverance from a
- 7:26global tyrant, singing victoriously by a sea Moses and
- 7:36more specifically the song of Moses, a lamb, the tent of
- 7:43witness, priestly looking servants of God, and finally the
- 7:50sanctuary filled with the smoke of God's glory.
- 7:52It couldn't be more obvious. What John is doing here in this
- 7:57vision is clearly making an allusion to the Exodus story and
- 8:04the journey into the wilderness. But for what purpose?
- 8:09Well, by borrowing these details, John is obviously
- 8:13bringing to mind this pivotal moment in redemptive history.
- 8:17But more than that, he's also describing a new Exodus to come.
- 8:24That's what's happening here. It says, oh, the age.
- 8:27The apostle is saying you are very aware of God's redemptive
- 8:32power, namely what he did for Israel, bringing them out of
- 8:38Egypt. But I'm here to tell you by the
- 8:41authority and this inspiration of the Holy Spirit that there is
- 8:44another exodus to come. And what I want to speak to you
- 8:50about is just that, the new exodus.
- 8:54Have you ever thought about it? It's promised, it's illustrated,
- 9:00it's presented to us right here in this chapter.
- 9:03And the way we're going to seek to understand this new Exodus is
- 9:06by coming to this text, looking at the major characteristics and
- 9:10then comparing it with the Exodus of old, paralleling some
- 9:14truths and and contrasting some realities.
- 9:17For what reason? So that in the end, we would
- 9:20come to the conclusion that what is to come, this great act of
- 9:24deliverance, is far more significant, far more powerful,
- 9:28and far more glorious than what Israel experienced in Egypt.
- 9:32I want you and I today, by the grace of God, to consider 3
- 9:36facets of this new exodus, of this exodus that is promised for
- 9:42the future. They're very simple to remember.
- 9:46Again, there's going to be similarities, but we're also
- 9:48going to see how this exodus is greater #1 John wants us to see
- 9:56the wrath of God and connection to this act of deliverance.
- 10:01That's what he immediately perceives in the opening of this
- 10:03chapter. What he sees in this new vision
- 10:05is 7 angels who come and emerge with 7 plagues that will
- 10:10complete God's wrath on the earth.
- 10:13Notice they are the last. This is another clue that the
- 10:16Book of Revelation is chronological.
- 10:19Some people believe it's cyclical, that it's repetitive,
- 10:21that it's just showing different angles of the same scene.
- 10:24But this is an indication that no, there's a progression taking
- 10:28place in Revelation. We've already covered the sealed
- 10:31judgments, we've seen the trumpet judgments, and now these
- 10:34bowls of God's wrath. They're the final acts of God's
- 10:37judgment. But notice this.
- 10:41The same way that God's judgment was the means of bringing total
- 10:46and complete deliverance to Israel, so will be for the
- 10:50church at the end of the age. Jesus Christ took God's wrath
- 10:56upon himself on the cross, yes, and he secured our redemption.
- 11:00But there's still more judgment to come, namely upon the wicked
- 11:03to make way for our total redemption for the new age, the
- 11:07new world, the new Kingdom to come.
- 11:08And that's what John is indicating here.
- 11:13You and I, we know that the way God accomplished this
- 11:17deliverance for Israel was by unleashing 10 plagues.
- 11:21But more than that, the final blow against Pharaoh and his
- 11:26tyrannical regime was what? Being buried beneath the Red
- 11:30Sea. And that's what seems to be
- 11:36indicated here, the message being illustrated when John sees
- 11:39not just the last plagues, but also a scene of a sea of glass
- 11:44mingled with fire. Did you see that?
- 11:49Verse 2? And I saw what appeared to be a
- 11:50sea of glass mingled with fire. The last time we saw the sea of
- 11:56glass was back in chapter 4, but there was no mention of it being
- 11:59mixed with fire. It was like crystal.
- 12:01It was calm. It's a reflection of God's
- 12:03purity, His Holiness, His righteousness, his, his
- 12:06consistency. But then now the sea of glass
- 12:09before his throne reappears, but this time it's being illuminated
- 12:14by flames. It's being stirred, so to speak,
- 12:18by fire. That doesn't mean that there's
- 12:22going to be a literal splitting of the Red Sea in the
- 12:24Tribulation period. What it does show, however, is
- 12:27that this glass like mass mixed with fire before God's throne
- 12:33conveys that God is about to bring the fatal and total defeat
- 12:37of the evil systems of the world, just like the Red Sea did
- 12:41in the past. John is deep.
- 12:46Clearly, he's being led by the Holy Spirit.
- 12:48However, there is a difference between what we see here in this
- 12:52experience of a future exodus for the Church, for the redeemed
- 12:57in Christ, and what Israel knew. There is a clear order of
- 13:01events. When you go back to Exodus, what
- 13:05do you find? The plagues being poured out
- 13:08upon Egypt, and then the Red Sea.
- 13:11And then after the Red Sea, what on the other side of the shore,
- 13:14The people of God looking upon their enemies, drowning in the
- 13:18in the water and rejoicing. They were singing then, but now
- 13:23we come here and what do we discover?
- 13:25We have mention of plagues. We have even this connection
- 13:28with the idea of a sea, and they're singing.
- 13:34But when are they singing? Well, keep in mind the plagues
- 13:38are being introduced in this chapter, in chapter 16.
- 13:41They're going to be triggered. They're actually going to be
- 13:44released. They haven't been released yet,
- 13:49and yet the redeemed in heaven are singing.
- 13:54They're singing before it happens.
- 13:57Why? Because they know that the
- 13:59outcome is guaranteed. This is a declaration of faith.
- 14:05This is a demonstration of absolute trust.
- 14:08There's a contrast here. The redeemed in the Old
- 14:11Testament erupt and praise after God achieved his promise, which
- 14:15is wonderful. But the righteous here who are
- 14:18in heaven, namely they choose to praise God and glorify Him
- 14:23before anything plays out on the earth.
- 14:28This is obviously a look into a future end times event, but the
- 14:32worship of these Saints instructs us about our worship.
- 14:38You and I cannot afford to reserve our praise only when God
- 14:42does something for what He has accomplished in the past.
- 14:47He's worthy of that. We must continually acknowledge
- 14:49Him for the good that He has allowed us to experience and
- 14:52enjoy. Yes, but broaden your worship,
- 14:55my brother and sister. You and I have permission and we
- 14:58are invited. More than that, we are commanded
- 15:01to praise God for what He will do, what He what He promised
- 15:06that would happen. Not just what He has performed,
- 15:08but what He has promised will take place.
- 15:11And the reason why we can sing about those things with absolute
- 15:14fervor and zeal and rock solid confidence is because He said it
- 15:18would happen. Because He said it, He will do
- 15:21it. And so the explosiveness of our
- 15:26worship, yes, rightly so, should be in response to what the Lord
- 15:32has done, but also what He will do.
- 15:38And this is what we find here. These Saints are not
- 15:43experiencing yet, but they are still glorifying God.
- 15:47Now Speaking of singing, we come to the second feature of this
- 15:49new exodus that is so important. We looked at the wrath of God,
- 15:53but when? Now we have to look at the song,
- 15:56the songs that they are singing in verse three and four, and
- 16:00they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God and the song of
- 16:03the Lamb. Now there is a harmless debate
- 16:06about this singing taking place here, and here's the discussion.
- 16:13Is this speaking about two songs or one harmless?
- 16:18Your salvation doesn't count on it, thank God.
- 16:23So is this 2 titles for the same song?
- 16:28Others will say and argue, no, no, these are two separate tunes
- 16:32blended together like a medley. And then there are a minority
- 16:38who say no. This is clearly indicating that
- 16:39there are two separate songs being sung here.
- 16:42If you and if you take the text at face value, it seems to be
- 16:45just that. There's the song of Moses and
- 16:47then the song of the Lamb. If it was one song, you would
- 16:51think that it would say something like and they sing the
- 16:53song of Moses, the servant of God and the lamb.
- 16:58But that's not what happens. You have two songs here being
- 17:02mentioned. Now, why is that distinction
- 17:05important? I think one reason why it's
- 17:08important is because when we look at the song of Moses, we
- 17:11are aware that this is the people of God rehearsing God's
- 17:16past faithfulness. This is something that we find
- 17:18in Exodus 15. And so they are looking back and
- 17:22they are even echoing what the Saints of old were rejoicing
- 17:27about. But the song of the Lamb appears
- 17:29to be a new song. And John gives us a glimpse into
- 17:34some of the lyrics of this new song.
- 17:36And before we look at these lyrics, consider what this means
- 17:38for us on this side of the cross.
- 17:42This is so glorious. We as followers of Christ have
- 17:46more to sing about than those who went before us.
- 17:52The prophets of all. They had insight into the
- 17:53future. There is.
- 17:55There is obvious clues in even the Psalms about Messiah and
- 17:59what He will do and what He will accomplish on behalf of the
- 18:02world. But in reality, the redeemed of
- 18:07old sang about a shadow. You and I get to sing about the
- 18:13fulfillment. We have the complete picture.
- 18:18We have our eyes opened because the New Covenant grants us
- 18:26clarity, more revelation, more testimonies, and as a result, it
- 18:32should stimulate and encourage greater worship.
- 18:37We have more to sing about. It's not just the song of Moses
- 18:42that's been there from nearly the beginning.
- 18:45We also have the song of the Lamb.
- 18:48This is one of the advantages that we have as followers of
- 18:50Christ today. I want you to turn to a verse
- 18:54that is so important for us and being able to answer why we are
- 19:00more blessed in the new covenant.
- 19:02It's in Second Timothy one verse 10.
- 19:05This will confirm the argument that I'm trying to make here.
- 19:08Listen to what Paul says about one of the treasures of being in
- 19:11Christ, what Christ was able to offer us in Second Timothy 110
- 19:18in describing the power and the privilege of the gospel.
- 19:22Notice what he mentions Paul says, and which now has been
- 19:26manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who
- 19:29abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through
- 19:34the gospel. We know that when Jesus came, He
- 19:37destroyed death, but he did more than just destroy death.
- 19:39It says here that He brought life, that is eternal life, life
- 19:43now, and immortality to light through the gospel.
- 19:51In other words, when Jesus Christ entered into the scene
- 19:53and did what he did and taught what he taught, he turned the
- 19:56light on. In the Old Testament they could
- 20:00see, but it was almost like entering into a room with a very
- 20:03faint light. And so you can make out the
- 20:05shapes and and you can touch and see.
- 20:07Maybe this is what this object is.
- 20:10But when Christ comes into this whole picture of redemptive
- 20:13history, he flicks on the light and we can see everything.
- 20:17And we know what we need to know by God's grace concerning
- 20:21immortality, everlasting life, what's what's going to happen
- 20:24after death and about life now. So the Old Testament, they had
- 20:30their songs, but we have more, They had their insights, but we
- 20:34have greater. And this is what I find here,
- 20:39that there is a principle that reminds us of our great treasure
- 20:42in Christ, not just the song of Moses, but the song of the Lamb.
- 20:46Now let me add something that I know I don't need to convince
- 20:48you of. I'm aware who I'm preaching to,
- 20:52but it's good to be reminded about it anyway.
- 20:55The fact that these Saints who are in heaven, we're going to
- 20:59discover that they're, they're the Saints who were martyred
- 21:01during the Tribulation period. The fact that they're singing
- 21:03the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb teaches us that the
- 21:09Old Testament and the New Testament are consistent, that
- 21:13they're in harmony. The old does not contradict the
- 21:17new and vice versa. The new completes the old.
- 21:22And this is this is illustrated here because I'm afraid that
- 21:25there are many people who are under the illusion that there is
- 21:29disagreement or even different versions of God or that because
- 21:35we're New Testament believers, this really gets me going.
- 21:38So I'm that because we are not followers in Christ and we are
- 21:44enjoying the new covenant and Christ inaugurated this New
- 21:47Testament, we don't need to really look into the Old
- 21:50Testament that there's not much benefit for us there.
- 21:56We're in the last book of the Bible.
- 21:58And guess what they're doing? They're singing the song of
- 22:00Moses. I jure you.
- 22:05And again, I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but just in
- 22:07case there's one who's listening to this and has been convinced
- 22:11that we can disconnect ourselves from the Hebrew Scriptures.
- 22:14No, no, no, no, no. God bids us to explore and
- 22:18examine and relish in what came before, especially because we
- 22:24have the complete picture now in Christ.
- 22:27We have the flashlight to look at everything that's found in
- 22:33what came before and see it for what it really is.
- 22:36Why would you miss out on that? I'm telling you, there's a
- 22:41growing trend within the evangelical circles of
- 22:46dismissing the Old Testament, of ignoring the Hebrew Scriptures,
- 22:51and that's creating a lot of problems theologically.
- 22:57I'm going to take my cue from the Saints found here in the
- 22:59Book of Revelation. They didn't just sing the song
- 23:02of the Lamb. In fact, you Can't Sing the song
- 23:04of the Lamb unless you know the prior songs, the Lamb.
- 23:08Where does that come from? Well, if you know the song of
- 23:11Moses, it'll make more sense. So here's the application.
- 23:17Read your Old Testament, enjoy it.
- 23:22Enjoy it enough where you can sing about the truths you find
- 23:24in it, and that'll always point you to Christ.
- 23:30So they sing. Now we'll look at some of the
- 23:33lyrics here. We can't look at every detail.
- 23:35I want to just mention one thing and it's how the words you and
- 23:39you are repeated over and over again.
- 23:42Again, we can spend a whole message just on the lyrics here,
- 23:44but consider this. Your deeds, your ways glorify
- 23:50your name. You alone are holy.
- 23:52Worship you for your righteous acts. 6 times in the stanza.
- 23:58God and God alone is the object of this choir's adoration and
- 24:05affection. You, you, you're, you're, you.
- 24:08And that becomes even more meaningful when you remember who
- 24:12it is singing these truths. Go back to verse 2, it says
- 24:18here. And I saw what appeared to be a
- 24:20sea of glass, mingled fire, and also those who had conquered the
- 24:23beast and its image and the number of its names standing
- 24:26beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands,
- 24:29Those who had conquered the beast.
- 24:32And what way do they conquer the beast?
- 24:35These are Christians during the regime of the Antichrist, and
- 24:38they clearly refused to bow the knee to him, and because of that
- 24:44they lost their lives. These are those who have shown
- 24:48great strength and resilience, those who have shown absolute
- 24:51and total devotion to Christ, those who overcame unspeakable
- 24:55difficulties in the world because of their love for the
- 24:59Lord Jesus to the point where they had to lose their heads in
- 25:05order to prove it. You might say these are super
- 25:09Christians, right? You might say these are very
- 25:12impressive believers who have displayed such incredible
- 25:15faithfulness to the cause of Christ.
- 25:18And indeed, these are Saints that we can applaud.
- 25:22But I love what I find here, that these victorious,
- 25:25triumphant believers, when it comes to worship, give all the
- 25:29glory to God. You, your, it's all about you.
- 25:37Again, we're learning about how to worship.
- 25:38We're learning what worship is in the Book of Revelation.
- 25:41Do you, do you notice how much there is about worship in this
- 25:43book? True worship is being able to
- 25:48acknowledge that no matter what I do for Christ, no matter what
- 25:51I accomplish in his name means nothing.
- 25:57My boss is in the Lord alone. Anything that happens in me,
- 26:02anything that happens through me, should cause me to recognize
- 26:08that God is the source of it. And if it wasn't for him, then I
- 26:12wouldn't be able to do any of this anyway.
- 26:16And so these Saints here who did great feats, who accomplished
- 26:19great things for Christ in the darkest hour of human history,
- 26:23were able to still give God all the glory.
- 26:26Because that's what true worship looks like.
- 26:30The song of this new exodus, but finally the tent for the third
- 26:38and final time. In this particular vision, John
- 26:40tells us that his attention is turned to something, and it's
- 26:45found in verse 5. After this, I looked in the
- 26:48sanctuary of the tent of witness in heaven was opened.
- 26:52So this sanctuary of the tent, this is speaking about another
- 26:56translation of the Tabernacle, the Tabernacle that is in
- 26:59heaven. And what what John highlights is
- 27:02that this tent opens and as it opens, something's going to come
- 27:10out of it. Now, the reason why this tent is
- 27:15highlighted, it's because the Holy Spirit uses that through
- 27:19John to keep the theme of the Exodus alive, to keep our minds
- 27:25still connected to that motif. And I trust that we're all aware
- 27:30that the Tabernacle is a very obvious symbol in the Old
- 27:33Testament, that after the people escaped Egypt and went into the
- 27:38wilderness, God called them to build a dwelling place for his
- 27:43presence with his people on the earth.
- 27:45The Tabernacle was God's temporary home on this planet.
- 27:51So that's what we have in mind. This tent speaks about God's
- 27:56presence, it speaks about His, the hosting of his glory, which
- 28:01then causes us to interpret that what's about to transpire and
- 28:06emerge from this Tabernacle means it's coming directly from
- 28:09God. What John is about to see next
- 28:15because of this tent means that this is issuing from the
- 28:20undefiled, pure, glorious presence of the Lord.
- 28:25And what is John? See next, 7 angels with 7
- 28:30plagues. That will be the punctuation
- 28:33mark of God's judgement upon humanity.
- 28:36And there's no confusion here. They're not operating with their
- 28:41own authority. They're not doing this
- 28:43independently. These angels were dispatched
- 28:46from the presence of God. That disturbs some people.
- 28:53And in case that might agitate you, this truth is further
- 28:58confirmed in that this is not only something coming from God
- 29:03the Father, this is also something that Jesus Christ
- 29:06affirms. How do we know that?
- 29:10It's very subtle, but it's profound at the same time.
- 29:12Did you notice how they were dressed?
- 29:15Bright linen garments? But more than that, John tells
- 29:19us that they had golden sashes around their chests.
- 29:24Does that remind you of anything?
- 29:27The last time we saw anybody wearing a golden sash was back
- 29:30in Revelation chapter 1, Revelation One.
- 29:33Look at this in verse 13. This is John's experience of the
- 29:36glorified Christ, and this detail shows up about Him here.
- 29:41Revelation 113 And in the midst of the lampstands, one like a
- 29:45Son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash
- 29:49around his chest. What is happening here?
- 29:54Many chapters later now we see angels with a golden sash around
- 29:58their chest. And here's the point that's
- 30:00being made. These angels who are reporting
- 30:02for duty are resembling and reflecting the nature of Jesus
- 30:06Christ. They are about to do something
- 30:11that is in complete alignment with the will and desire of
- 30:15Christ himself, and that irks people because they have
- 30:24developed a theology about the person of Jesus Christ that
- 30:27completely disassociates him from any judgement against
- 30:30sinners. Now these angels who are walking
- 30:35towards the bulls are actually reflecting Jesus, representing
- 30:44Jesus, and showing that what they're about to do is what
- 30:48Christ wants to do. God's judgement is real.
- 30:57And not only is it real, nothing and no one can change that
- 31:02reality. And that becomes even more
- 31:06obvious when we see what happens next with this Tabernacle.
- 31:09Look at verse 8. And the sanctuary was filled
- 31:14with smoke from the glory of God and from his power.
- 31:17And no one could enter the sanctuary until the seven
- 31:19plagues of the seven angels were finished.
- 31:22So these 7 angels come towards the bowls.
- 31:25One of the four living creatures gives them the actual
- 31:27instruments symbolically, and they're going to pour them out
- 31:31in the coming chapters. We'll look at that next week.
- 31:34But notice what John sees. He sees a cloud, the tangible
- 31:38presence of God filling this heavenly Tabernacle.
- 31:42And my question is, why do I need to know about it?
- 31:47Is this just cinematic drama? Is this just to add more color
- 31:52to the scene? Is this just to make us realize
- 31:56the seriousness of the moment? In part, yes.
- 31:58But again, we're looking at the new Exodus.
- 32:01Again, we're looking at the Holy Spirit making connections and
- 32:04references for us to understand the deeper message here.
- 32:09And you know your Old Testament well enough, I'm sure, to
- 32:12understand that we've seen a similar manifestation in the
- 32:14past, that the earthly counterpart to this heavenly
- 32:18Tabernacle also once hosted the manifest presence of God's
- 32:23glorious cloud. Do you remember in Exodus
- 32:29chapter 40? Let me read this to you don't
- 32:32have to turn there, but listen to what happens in Exodus 40,
- 32:34verse 35. And Moses was not able to enter
- 32:38the tent of meeting because the clouds settled on it, and the
- 32:42glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle.
- 32:46This actually happens not with the Tabernacle, but with the
- 32:49temple when Solomon builds it in Jerusalem.
- 32:53Listen to this in First Kings 8 verse 10, First Kings 8, verse
- 32:5810. And when the priest came out of
- 33:00the holy place, a cloud filled the House of the Lord, so that
- 33:03the priest could not stand to minister because of the cloud,
- 33:06for the glory of the Lord filled the House of the Lord.
- 33:08So both times in the past when the earthly counterparts hosted
- 33:14God's cloud, the same thing occurred.
- 33:18The leadership, namely the priest, could not enter in and
- 33:21do what they were supposed to do.
- 33:25What's 1 of the main duties of a priest?
- 33:26To intercede and stand in the gap on behalf of a sinful
- 33:30people. So keeping that pattern in mind,
- 33:34now what do we have? We come to the New Testament, We
- 33:36see the true Tabernacle, the heavenly one that the earthly
- 33:39ones copied from, and a cloud fills it.
- 33:46Same thing. So then we must assume that the
- 33:50same outcome is here. What do I mean by that?
- 33:55In the same way that the priest could not enter in to do what
- 33:57they were supposed to do, the fact that a cloud comes to this
- 34:00temple in heaven suggests that God will not allow intercession
- 34:06to take place. In other words, as he is
- 34:10prepared to pour out these bowls of judgement, he will not accept
- 34:15any prayers, he will not accept any intercession, he will not
- 34:21receive any cry to stop his hand.
- 34:28The Tabernacle be closed for service until every drop of
- 34:32those bowls is poured out. So this is an illustrative way
- 34:40for the Holy Spirit to describe one of the most frightening
- 34:43components of the period of the bold judgments.
- 34:47God will not hear any prayers during that time.
- 34:54It will be too late. He gave way too many chances.
- 35:00And so He will do what He is going to do, and it will be
- 35:04unstoppable and it will be irreversible.
- 35:10You know, this brings to mind Jeremiah's language when he
- 35:14wrote in that short book called Lamentations, of what happened
- 35:19when God allowed Babylon to be the instrument of his judgement
- 35:23against his own. Listen to these words from
- 35:26Lamentations 3, verse 44. Ready for this?
- 35:32Jeremiah writes. You have wrapped yourself with a
- 35:35cloud so that no prayer can pass through.
- 35:45There are times when God has done that.
- 35:48We're a nation where people have since so grievously, so
- 35:51consistently, so rebelliously that he wraps himself in a
- 35:56cloud, so to speak, and not one single prayer can penetrate it.
- 36:03It will fail. And what we find here in this
- 36:07vision is it has reached that point at the end of time.
- 36:14So it doesn't matter how strong the nation's cry out, it doesn't
- 36:18matter how much they plead, it doesn't matter how long they
- 36:21fast. In fact, as we're about to
- 36:23discover with these judgments, they're going to be in such
- 36:26rapid succession, there'll be virtually no time to be able to
- 36:30pray anyway. We've come to a very important
- 36:36turning point in our understanding of Bible prophecy.
- 36:39This is the end of the end. But here's how I want to end
- 36:43this message today. The status of the Tabernacle in
- 36:47heaven is a hopeful one. This afternoon.
- 36:52It's a hopeful one. There is no cloud wrapping
- 36:56around it where no prayer can pass through.
- 37:00You know, it's amazing when you read the book of Hebrews.
- 37:01Oh, I love Hebrews. When are we going to go through
- 37:03Hebrews? It's too deep.
- 37:08Need a little bit more time. The more you study, the more you
- 37:13realize that the author is showcasing how Christ is more
- 37:17brilliant, more awesome than virtually everything.
- 37:20And we're familiar with the comparison of Jesus being our
- 37:23great high priest and the Levitical priest, and how the
- 37:26different components of the Levitical priesthood is inferior
- 37:28to Christ. But I was reminded through this
- 37:31when I went to Hebrews last night, late last night, looking
- 37:33at the Tabernacle, there's a heavenly one.
- 37:36It's the one that actually God called Moses to look at, to
- 37:39imitate when he built this physical one on earth.
- 37:46But in Hebrews 8, verse one and two, we're actually told that
- 37:50Christ does what He does as our high priest in heaven in the
- 37:54true Tabernacle. And why is he teaching that at
- 37:59that point in his book? Because he wants to tell the
- 38:01Jewish Christians who want to so badly go back to the ironic way
- 38:05of worship and atonement that Jesus Christ is not only a
- 38:10greater high priest, He does his priestly work in a more superior
- 38:15place. You want to go back to the
- 38:18temple? Do you realize that the temple
- 38:20is just a copy of a greater and a heavenly?
- 38:231 Jesus, our great High Priest in the New Covenant, is there on
- 38:26our behalf, and not only is He there, he's doing something
- 38:35there. Here's what he's doing right
- 38:39now. Hebrews 7, verse 25.
- 38:43Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost of those who
- 38:47draw near to God through him. Since He always lives to make
- 38:52intercession for them, He always lives to make intercession for
- 38:58them. That's now.
- 39:02There's a time coming that there will be no intercession.
- 39:05It will only be judgement. Nobody can do anything about it.
- 39:09But between now and then there is One who is willing to take
- 39:14anybody who humbly comes before him by faith, and he will enter
- 39:19into this heavenly Tabernacle, so to speak, and bring that
- 39:23request on your behalf, and it will be answered.
- 39:29Listen, there is an open door in this heavenly Tabernacle for
- 39:33mercy and for our needs to go in.
- 39:35But in Revelation 15, it will be open for judgment to come out.
- 39:41Don't wait. Now is the time to understand
- 39:45that I have an open heaven above me, that there is something
- 39:50greater than what Moses built. And I can connect to that
- 39:55reality by faith and say, oh, this Jesus who rose from the
- 39:58dead, He didn't stop ministering.
- 40:02He stopped ministering on the earth, but in heaven.
- 40:04Now he's willing to actually represent me before God the
- 40:07Father. And he remains the single
- 40:11greatest unending high priest. He will never be replaced.
- 40:16He will never die. He doesn't borrow from heavenly
- 40:20lambs and ox and bulls. He brings His eternal blood
- 40:25every single time. And so this is a prophecy of
- 40:30doom in Revelation 15. But let me end it on a note of
- 40:33great hope and joy today. If you don't know Jesus Christ
- 40:39and you cry out to Him, He will hear it.
- 40:43He will hear I'm talking about the real Jesus of Nazareth.
- 40:47He will hear you. I say this often that apart from
- 40:53salvation itself, one of the greatest thrills and ecstasies
- 40:56that you can know in this life on this side of eternity is when
- 41:00God answers prayers. I'm talking about real prayers,
- 41:04not like, was that God or was that coincidence?
- 41:06No, no, no, no, prayers like that was God.
- 41:11And one of the strongest ways you can know God answering your
- 41:15cry is when you cry out for salvation.
- 41:19You'll know when you're saved. You will know.
- 41:22You know how you'll know because you won't recognize yourself.
- 41:26Not perfect, but new direction, not instantaneously glorious,
- 41:32but set on the path of sanctification.
- 41:36And the only way that is possible now is because we're in
- 41:38the age of grace and that heavenly Tabernacle is still
- 41:42open. And this priest is willing to
- 41:45take your request and bring him to God and make it real in your
- 41:49life. Let's thank him for these
- 41:51truths. Father, we thank you from the
- 41:53bottom of our hearts that though we can rejoice with the song of
- 42:01Moses, of what you've done for Israel and Egypt, we can look
- 42:05forward to a new exodus where you will destroy the Antichrist,
- 42:10his system, all the oppressors of the people of God for all
- 42:13time in a single moment, and we will enter into the Promised
- 42:17Land. We thank You that we have more
- 42:20songs to sing on this side of the cross.
- 42:22We thank You that even now there's a greater Tabernacle in
- 42:25our favor, one in heaven that we have access to.
- 42:30And so, Lord, if one here doesn't know what this means, we
- 42:34pray that you would open their eyes to experience the reality
- 42:36of the great work of our great High Priest.
- 42:39Lord, for us who are here and know you and enjoy you and love
- 42:42you, may everything that we heard in this message only stir
- 42:46us to see the majesty and the brilliance of Your word.
- 42:51We are amazed and we stand amazed before you.
- 42:55We ask these things in the name of the great High Priest, one
- 42:58who will never be replaced, one who has infinite mercy
- 43:02available. Jesus, Amen.
- 43:08Let's stand church, let's rejoice Christ and our
- 43:13deliverance that is to come at the end of the age.
