Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: There were seven minutes and 47 seconds left in the
- 0:02Speaker 1: first quarter when UTEP lined up to punt. Brady Braun
- 0:05Speaker 1: hit it clean, 59 yards. Isaiah Cetegna caught it at
- 0:09Speaker 1: the Oklahoma 12 and By the time he crossed the
- 0:11Speaker 1: goal line, this football game was over. 88 yards, sideline
- 0:15Speaker 1: to sideline. Nobody within 10 of him at the end.
- 0:18Speaker 1: 14 to nothing, and there were still 48 minutes left
- 0:21Speaker 1: to play. Final score, 51 to nothing. Complete shutout, never trailed,
- 0:26Speaker 1: never got tested. Every backup on the roster got snaps.
- 0:29Speaker 1: And I'll be honest with you, that punt return isn't
- 0:31Speaker 1: the play I'd point to if you asked me what
- 0:33Speaker 1: actually mattered Friday night.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Neither is the shutout. The number that matters is five
- 0:38Speaker 2: and a half.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Because last season, Oklahoma's running backs averaged 4.2 yards a carry.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And the team number, the one that counts sacks and
- 0:45Speaker 1: kneel downs against you, was 3.5, 113th in the country.
- 0:49Speaker 1: That number is the reason last season ended in the
- 0:51Speaker 1: first round instead of the semifinals. Friday night, Oklahoma's top
- 0:55Speaker 1: four backs ran for 170 yards on 31 carries. Five
- 0:59Speaker 1: and a half a pop. Now against UTEP. So hold
- 1:02Speaker 1: your applause. But that's the thermometer. That's the thing this
- 1:04Speaker 1: entire offseason was built around. And in eight days, Kyle
- 1:09Speaker 1: Whittingham gets to check the reading. Let's get into it.
- 1:12Speaker 2: First, what happened?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Oklahoma got the ball to start after UTEP won the
- 1:17Speaker 1: toss and deferred. And the first thing Brent Venables did
- 1:20Speaker 1: was tell you exactly what this game was going to
- 1:22Speaker 1: be about. Three straight run plays, not a script full
- 1:26Speaker 1: of misdirection, not a deep shot to set a tone.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Three runs.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Lloyd Avant had 32 yards before Oklahoma threw a football.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Twelve plays later, Avant punched it in from the one.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Six carries, 38 yards, and the first touchdown of the
- 1:40Speaker 1: season on the opening drive. John Mateer went two for
- 1:43Speaker 1: three for 30 on the possession, with Elijah Thomas taking
- 1:47Speaker 1: a 24-yard catch down into the red zone. seven to nothing, clean, methodical,
- 1:52Speaker 1: exactly what a top 10 team is supposed to do.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Then special teams took the game away.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Cetegna's punt return made it 14-0 with 727 on the
- 2:00Speaker 1: clock in the first quarter. Omarion Robinson flattened a defender
- 2:03Speaker 1: near midfield to spring him.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Cetegna, who was a track.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Kid in high school before any of this, did what
- 2:09Speaker 1: track kids do once the crease opens.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And here's a stat that tells.
- 2:14Speaker 1: You how long Oklahoma has been waiting for that play.
- 2:17Speaker 1: The Sooners did not score a single punt return touchdown
- 2:20Speaker 1: in 2024.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Not one. They didn't score one in 2025 either.
- 2:25Speaker 1: 25 returns last year, 312 yards, zero touchdowns. Friday was
- 2:31Speaker 1: the first one since 2023. Then Rocky Beers. Mateer had
- 2:36Speaker 1: all night in the pocket, and I mean all night.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Nobody touched him. and found his transfer tight end for
- 2:41Speaker 1: 40 yards. Beers at the goal line above a fallen defender.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Think about that. First catch is a Sooner. Touchdown, 21
- 2:48Speaker 1: to nothing with 101 left in the first quarter. One quarter,
- 2:51Speaker 1: three touchdowns, two of them from guys who weren't on
- 2:54Speaker 1: this roster a year ago. There was one scary moment
- 2:56Speaker 1: in there. Kip Lewis, fifth-year linebacker, Oklahoma's leading tackler last
- 3:00Speaker 1: season with 76 stops, went down with an apparent leg
- 3:03Speaker 1: injury and had the training staff out on the field
- 3:05Speaker 1: with him. He came back returned to the game, whatever
- 3:08Speaker 1: it was, it wasn't the thing everybody in that stadium
- 3:10Speaker 1: was afraid it was. Hold that thought, because we're coming
- 3:13Speaker 1: back to it. UTEP, to their credit, actually.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Moved the ball a little.
- 3:17Speaker 1: 11-play drive down to the Oklahoma 15, ran a flea flicker,
- 3:22Speaker 1: ran a reverse on fourth down to get into sooner territory.
- 3:25Speaker 1: They just could not finish anything. Carlos Arreola missed from 33.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Then he missed from 50 after a delay of game penalty,
- 3:32Speaker 1: pushed a 45-yarder back five yards. Owen Heineke hurried Colson
- 3:36Speaker 1: into a dropped screen on third down to force that one.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Two field goal attempts, two misses, zero points.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Tate Sandell, the reigning Groza winner, and the first Oklahoma
- 3:46Speaker 1: kicker to ever win that thing, hit a 33-yarder to
- 3:49Speaker 1: make it 24-0, then added three more before the break.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Halftime, Oklahoma 27, UTEP 0.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Mateer at 143 yards through the air on a 69%
- 4:00Speaker 1: completion rate. Cetegna with 154 all-purpose yards. Beers with 43 receiving.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Avant with 51 on the ground. Second half, Oklahoma just
- 4:09Speaker 1: kept stacking. Peyton Bowen forced a fumble that Taylor Wine recovered.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Mateer hit Cetegna deep for his second touchdown to make
- 4:16Speaker 1: it 34-0. Trell Harris got his first touchdown as a
- 4:19Speaker 1: Sooner for 41-0. Liam Evans hit a 34-yard field goal.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Witt Neubauer walked in from three yards out to close
- 4:26Speaker 1: it at 51. Really quick, today's video is presented by

- 4:44Speaker 1: back to the video. Now let's talk about what actually matters.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Takeaway number one, John Mateer's hand works. That's the headline,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and the number that proves it isn't the yardage, it's
- 4:53Speaker 1: the percentage. Here's the context you need. Last season, Mateer
- 4:57Speaker 1: threw for 2,185 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions across
- 5:02Speaker 1: 12 games. He completed 62.2% for the year, but those
- 5:06Speaker 1: raw totals hide the actual story. Mateer started 2025 looking
- 5:10Speaker 1: like a Heisman candidate. Then he broke his hand against Auburn,
- 5:14Speaker 1: had surgery, missed a game, came back three weeks later
- 5:18Speaker 1: against Texas and threw three interceptions in a 23-6 loss.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And after that, he wasn't the same guy. He crossed
- 5:25Speaker 1: 200 yards, passing exactly twice in the final six games
- 5:28Speaker 1: of the regular season.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Everything got short. Everything got safe. The deep ball.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Basically disappeared until the very end of the year. Here's
- 5:35Speaker 1: the stat that reframes all of it. In all of 2025,
- 5:39Speaker 1: John Mateer completed 69% or better in exactly two games,
- 5:44Speaker 1: Illinois State and South Carolina. Friday night, he was at
- 5:47Speaker 1: 69% at halftime. Now, is this against a UTEP defense
- 5:51Speaker 1: that just moved to the Mountain West after a 2-10 season?
- 5:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Nobody should be printing playoff tickets over a good half
- 5:59Speaker 1: against the Miners, but that's not the point. The point
- 6:02Speaker 1: is the throws look different. The deep ball to Satna
- 6:05Speaker 1: in the second half was a real one. The 40-yarder
- 6:07Speaker 1: to Beers was a real one. Those are throws Mateer
- 6:10Speaker 1: stopped making in October and November because his hand wouldn't
- 6:13Speaker 1: let him make them. You can fake volume. You can
- 6:16Speaker 1: fake yardage against a bad team. You cannot fake the
- 6:19Speaker 1: ball coming out of your hand the way it's supposed to.
- 6:22Speaker 1: And he had more people to throw it to, which
- 6:24Speaker 1: matters just as much. Count the guys who found the
- 6:27Speaker 1: end zone. Avant, Cetegna, Beers, Harris, Neubauer, Lloyd Avant, new
- 6:31Speaker 1: Rocky Beers, new Trell Harris, new Hayden Hanson and Harris
- 6:34Speaker 1: both made their first catches as Sooners on the same
- 6:37Speaker 1: second quarter drive. and both went for first downs. Last year,
- 6:41Speaker 1: when Mateer's hand broke, the offense broke with it. There
- 6:44Speaker 1: was no tight end who could win a matchup, no
- 6:47Speaker 1: second back who could take pressure off, nowhere to hide.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Venables spent the offseason making sure there was somewhere to hide. Friday,
- 6:54Speaker 1: all of it showed up at once. Takeaway number two,
- 6:57Speaker 1: the run game looked genuinely different, and that's the thing
- 7:00Speaker 1: I want to see more of. Let me give you
- 7:02Speaker 1: the number again, because I don't think enough people are
- 7:04Speaker 1: going to notice it under a 51-point win. Top four rushers,
- 7:07Speaker 1: 31 carries, 170 yards, five and a half a pop.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Last year, Oklahoma's backs averaged 4.2, and the team number
- 7:16Speaker 1: was worse, 3.5. That figure counts sacks and kneel downs
- 7:20Speaker 1: against you, and Mateer got sacked plenty. So it's uglier
- 7:23Speaker 1: than what the backs alone were doing. But that's exactly
- 7:26Speaker 1: the point. That is the offense. That's what it actually
- 7:29Speaker 1: looked like on the field. 118 rushing yards a game,
- 7:33Speaker 1: 113th in the country for a team that made the
- 7:36Speaker 1: college football playoff. And it wasn't a one-year blip either.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Oklahoma averaged 3.87 a carry in 2024. Then it got worse.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Three and a half a carry is not a statistics.
- 7:49Speaker 1: It's a diagnosis. It means second and seven every single time.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It means you're throwing on obvious downs. It means the
- 7:56Speaker 1: defense knows what's coming and you do it anyway. because
- 8:00Speaker 1: you have no choice. So Venables went and fixed the room,
- 8:03Speaker 1: rebuilt the entire tight end group, Hanson, Beers, Van Dorsaler,
- 8:07Speaker 1: and which matters more for the run game than people
- 8:10Speaker 1: realize because that's your extra hat at the point of attack.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Brought in Avent for early downs while Xavier Robinson and
- 8:16Speaker 1: Torrey Blaylock worked back to full speed. And on the
- 8:19Speaker 1: very first possession of the season, he called three straight
- 8:22Speaker 1: runs just to see what he had. Avent went for
- 8:24Speaker 1: 32 yards on three carries before Mateer ever dropped back.
- 8:27Speaker 2: That's not grinding it out. That's the line getting movement.
- 8:30Speaker 1: So no, I'm not going to manufacture a problem out
- 8:32Speaker 1: of a five and a half yard average. That's a
- 8:33Speaker 1: good night. That's the exact thing they were trying to build.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Here's what I want to see next. I want to
- 8:38Speaker 1: see it at volume. 31 carries is a light workload
- 8:41Speaker 1: and it's light for a completely understandable reason. The game
- 8:44Speaker 1: was 34 nil and you stopped calling your best stuff.
- 8:47Speaker 1: We saw efficiency. We haven't seen sustained efficiency. Four quarters
- 8:52Speaker 1: against somebody punching back. I want to see it on
- 8:54Speaker 1: third and short. And in the fourth quarter of a
- 8:56Speaker 1: one-score game, those are different runs than the ones you
- 8:58Speaker 1: get when a Mountain West front is already down five scores.
- 9:01Speaker 1: And I want to see that offensive line hold up.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Because here's the part that got buried Friday night. Oklahoma
- 9:05Speaker 1: started a true freshman at center.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Noah Best.
- 9:08Speaker 1: First career start, and he wasn't supposed to be out there.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Jake McCullough, the returning starter, got hurt in a scrimmage
- 9:13Speaker 1: last month. So Oklahoma is going into Ann Arbor with
- 9:16Speaker 1: a true freshman making the line calls in front of 107,000 people.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Best was fine Friday against UTEP. The line was already
- 9:23Speaker 1: the biggest question mark on this roster before the season started.
- 9:26Speaker 1: There was injury noise all through game week. Nobody was
- 9:29Speaker 1: sure what the best five looked like. Friday was a
- 9:32Speaker 1: great first data point. It was one data point. Takeaway
- 9:34Speaker 1: number three. This defense is the reason Oklahoma can win
- 9:37Speaker 1: in Ann Arbor. 51 to nothing. Zero points. Not a
- 9:41Speaker 1: field goal. Not a garbage time touchdown against the backups.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Nothing.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Bowen forced a fumble. Wine recovered it. UTEP's two best
- 9:49Speaker 1: scoring chances both died on missed kicks. Colson had one
- 9:52Speaker 1: completion for six yards early and never got comfortable in
- 9:55Speaker 1: the pocket. And this is the unit that returned essentially
- 9:58Speaker 1: everybody Taylor wine, David, Stone, Jaden Jackson, and Adipoju Adibawar
- 10:02Speaker 1: up front. Peyton Bowen, Eli Bowen, and Cortland Galore in
- 10:05Speaker 1: the secondary. Owen Heineke and Kip Lewis in the middle.
- 10:08Speaker 1: A group that gave up 15.5 points and 272 yards
- 10:12Speaker 1: a game last season.
- 10:13Speaker 2: That is a legitimately elite defense.
- 10:16Speaker 1: And it's the reason Oklahoma can go on the road
- 10:18Speaker 1: as a top 10 team and not need the offense
- 10:20Speaker 1: to be perfect. Now come back to Kip Lewis for
- 10:23Speaker 1: a second. He went down in the first quarter, trainers
- 10:25Speaker 1: on the field. And in that moment, every Oklahoma fan
- 10:28Speaker 1: watching had the exact same thought because they have all
- 10:31Speaker 1: lived this movie before. Last season didn't come apart because
- 10:35Speaker 1: Oklahoma wasn't good enough. They went 10-3, made the playoff
- 10:38Speaker 1: as a number eight seed and lost to Alabama by
- 10:40Speaker 1: 10 in the first round.
- 10:42Speaker 2: That is a good football team.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Last season came apart because of one hand, one injury,
- 10:47Speaker 1: one guy, one moment in September, and the ceiling of
- 10:51Speaker 1: the entire year changed. So when the leading tackler goes
- 10:54Speaker 1: down in a game already decided by 30 points, that's
- 10:57Speaker 1: not paranoia.
- 10:58Speaker 2: That's pattern recognition. He came back.
- 11:00Speaker 1: This time it was nothing, but that's the tightrope. The
- 11:03Speaker 1: talent has never been the question in Norman. The availability has.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Which brings us to Ann Arbor. Saturday, September 12th, noon
- 11:11Speaker 1: Eastern Fox. And you need to understand the layers here.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Last year, Oklahoma beat Michigan 24, 13 in Norman. That
- 11:19Speaker 1: was Bryce Underwood's first career roadstart. That was the game
- 11:22Speaker 1: that put the Sooners on the map in 2025 and
- 11:26Speaker 1: started the whole run. This is the return leg home
- 11:29Speaker 1: and home. Oklahoma has to go get it in the
- 11:31Speaker 1: big house. And Michigan is a completely different building. Now,
- 11:34Speaker 1: Kyle Whittingham is the head coach first year in Ann Arbor,
- 11:37Speaker 1: Jason Beck running the offense. The Big Ten handed Whittingham
- 11:41Speaker 1: all four September games at home to settle in. Western Michigan, Oklahoma, UTEP, Iowa. Now,
- 11:45Speaker 1: think about who Kyle Whittingham is. This is a man
- 11:48Speaker 1: who spent two decades at Utah building everything around one idea.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Win the line of scrimmage. Be more physical than you.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Take three-star offensive linemen, develop them for four years, and
- 11:59Speaker 1: beat you in the trenches in the fourth quarter. That's
- 12:02Speaker 1: the coach. That is the entire identity. And now he
- 12:06Speaker 1: has Michigan's roster to do it with. Michigan's defensive line,
- 12:09Speaker 1: Michigan's development pipeline, a hundred and 7,000 people who have
- 12:13Speaker 1: not lost a home game in front of fewer than
- 12:15Speaker 1: a hundred thousand since 1975. So put the two things
- 12:18Speaker 1: side by side, Oklahoma just ran the football at five
- 12:21Speaker 1: and a half yards of carry and looked like a
- 12:23Speaker 1: completely different offense doing it. And in eight days, they
- 12:26Speaker 1: take that with a true freshman at center to the
- 12:29Speaker 1: one head coach in America, whose entire career is built
- 12:32Speaker 1: on making that number disappear.
- 12:34Speaker 2: That's the game. That's the whole game right there.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Oh, and Cole Sullivan, the linebacker who transferred from Michigan
- 12:41Speaker 1: to Oklahoma this offseason, listed as the starting Sam. He's
- 12:44Speaker 1: going to walk back into that stadium in a crimson
- 12:47Speaker 1: jersey in front of a crowd that used to cheer
- 12:48Speaker 1: for him. Good luck with that. So what did we
- 12:51Speaker 1: actually learn Friday night? We learned John Mateer's handworks. We
- 12:55Speaker 1: learned there are finally more than three guys on this
- 12:58Speaker 1: offense who can hurt you. We learned this football team
- 13:01Speaker 1: can run it at five and a half a carry,
- 13:03Speaker 1: which if it holds, changes literally everything about what Oklahoma's
- 13:07Speaker 1: ceiling is this season. And we learned the defense can
- 13:11Speaker 1: still put up a zero. We just don't know yet
- 13:14Speaker 1: whether any of it survives contact. That's not a criticism.
- 13:18Speaker 1: That's week one. Nobody learns anything real in week one.
- 13:22Speaker 1: You show up, you check the boxes, you get out clean.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Oklahoma checked every box on the sheet Friday night. Eight
- 13:29Speaker 1: days from now, somebody's going to hand them a much
- 13:31Speaker 1: harder sheet. If you enjoyed the breakdown, hit that like
- 13:33Speaker 1: button and subscribe. Let me know down in the comments,
- 13:36Speaker 1: and does that run game hold up in the big house?
- 13:38Speaker 1: And do the Sooners walk out of Ann Arbor 2-0?
- 13:41Speaker 1: I'll see you guys in the next one.
