- 0:03Speaker 1: two of You Comments Hockey with coach Mike Kavanaugh and
- 0:06Speaker 1: Mike Cohorts on the air. Adam Gardino as so, the
- 0:09Speaker 1: Huskies are five games into the season. They've taken care
- 0:12Speaker 1: of business at home, two losses on the road at
- 0:14Speaker 1: holy Cross and then on Friday night good test against
- 0:18Speaker 1: bu Husky's lost four too. But let's do an overview.
- 0:21Speaker 1: First of all, Michael, good evening, thank you for joining
- 0:23Speaker 1: us once again. Nice pullover. You're playing you playing the
- 0:26Speaker 1: Gino's golf tournament.
- 0:27Speaker 2: This show. I did not this year. I don't know when.
- 0:29Speaker 2: This one was a couple of years ago.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Okay, Harford Golf, right it is, Yeah, good track. Never
- 0:33Speaker 3: played there only big only a big guns playing there.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Gino is a member. I'm not the members, So hit
- 0:38Speaker 2: them up at the next radio show.
- 0:39Speaker 3: There you go, there you go.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Hey, that's that's always you know, maybe we should do
- 0:42Speaker 1: a foursome. You meet Gino and Chardino.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Have them put it together.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Adam can act the ball pretty good, all right, five
- 0:51Speaker 1: games in. What's your overall of you and what you've
- 0:53Speaker 1: seen so far from your team?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been pretty happy. With the way the team
- 0:57Speaker 2: has played. I thought, you know, the game Holy Cross
- 1:00Speaker 2: was a we played pretty well five on five. It
- 1:03Speaker 2: was special teams that was the issue in that game,
- 1:05Speaker 2: where they went three for five, we went oh for
- 1:07Speaker 2: six and still lost four to three. It was still
- 1:11Speaker 2: in the game at bu I thought, you know, they're
- 1:15Speaker 2: a really good team, but I thought we went toe
- 1:17Speaker 2: to toe with them. They got the late goal, you know,
- 1:21Speaker 2: to make it four to two. I was kind of
- 1:23Speaker 2: hoping that we could hold off. I think it was
- 1:25Speaker 2: right at the end of the four on four that
- 1:27Speaker 2: they scored because we were playing extremely well there in
- 1:32Speaker 2: the third period. So I've been happy with the way
- 1:35Speaker 2: the team has come together. And you know, we're scoring
- 1:38Speaker 2: goals knock on wood, more so than we have in
- 1:41Speaker 2: the past, or at least we did last year. So
- 1:44Speaker 2: that's been a positive sign. And I think we've been
- 1:47Speaker 2: playing pretty solid defense as well.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Yeah, the goals against average in terms of five on five,
- 1:54Speaker 4: you've allowed nine even strength goals in five games. Is
- 1:59Speaker 4: that a number that you specifically focus on when when
- 2:02Speaker 4: you're assessing how the team is playing, and you look
- 2:05Speaker 4: at that number and think, yeah, we wanted to be
- 2:07Speaker 4: below two per game.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, you do. I mean, unfortunately, though power
- 2:14Speaker 2: play goals count. Yeah, so, I mean, you know, and
- 2:18Speaker 2: we really only had one game. I thought that Holy
- 2:21Speaker 2: Cross game we made some mistakes because they got three
- 2:25Speaker 2: in that game. But I think BU got one. I
- 2:27Speaker 2: don't think anyone else is small. Yeah, one a game four.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Out of twenty three.
- 2:31Speaker 3: So the year four that you've allowed.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, so you know, we've played both special teams, even
- 2:37Speaker 2: our power play. We haven't had a lot of them,
- 2:39Speaker 2: but when we've had the power play recently, we've put
- 2:43Speaker 2: a lot of volume on net. Now, we just got
- 2:44Speaker 2: to find a way to put it by the goaltender.
- 2:46Speaker 1: That Holy Cross came up in Wistard the game winning goal.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I don't know if I've ever seen a puck bounce
- 2:51Speaker 1: off the back lass as fast as it didn't, and
- 2:53Speaker 1: it just happened to be almost a one timer that
- 2:56Speaker 1: got in.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Ty was basic, probably looking for the pun.
- 2:58Speaker 2: That was unfortunate.
- 2:59Speaker 3: For sure.
- 3:00Speaker 2: When I watched it live, I thought Ty got all
- 3:03Speaker 2: twisted up, but he didn't. He actually came out and
- 3:07Speaker 2: the puck was six feet over his head and when
- 3:10Speaker 2: it hit the glass, it came out so fast it
- 3:12Speaker 2: hit his back, so he was trying to spind so
- 3:15Speaker 2: it didn't hit his back and go in. And it
- 3:19Speaker 2: was just a flukey play.
- 3:21Speaker 4: That came up at holy Cross when when you look okay,
- 3:24Speaker 4: you give up the three power play goals. In your
- 3:28Speaker 4: discussion with the team after that one, how much are
- 3:32Speaker 4: you focusing on on that and just either a the
- 3:36Speaker 4: penalty kill or b not putting yourself in the penalty box.
- 3:40Speaker 2: The thing that bothered me was most of the penalties
- 3:42Speaker 2: we took were in the offensive zone. That's what bothered
- 3:44Speaker 2: me that that weekend in particular, we were taking, you know,
- 3:49Speaker 2: penalties two hundred feet from our own net and that's
- 3:52Speaker 2: just not And we got better this weekend. I thought
- 3:55Speaker 2: we I thought we played it pretty so there's only
- 3:58Speaker 2: one penalty until we get to the third period and
- 4:01Speaker 2: then it got a little out of whack. But it's
- 4:04Speaker 2: an area that certainly we want to focus on. I
- 4:07Speaker 2: don't want to be taking penalties in the offensive zone.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Huskies were perfect penalty kills in that second holy Cross game. Uh,
- 4:14Speaker 1: six for six in that department in the three to
- 4:16Speaker 1: one win. Dan kindly brought this up, and you tell
- 4:19Speaker 1: me the way the style holy Cross plays reminds him
- 4:23Speaker 1: a lot of loll The way they play, it's.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Kind of similar.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I mean that, I mean those are grinders those games, Yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I think it's I think it's more in line with
- 4:32Speaker 2: Quinnipiac because Billy coached under for a long time and
- 4:37Speaker 2: they do a lot of the same things. Now they
- 4:39Speaker 2: have different spin tweaks to what Quinnipiac does, but they
- 4:45Speaker 2: play a lot of that style of play, and it's
- 4:48Speaker 2: hard to play. Like when teams that structured and disciplined
- 4:52Speaker 2: on their for check and disciplined on their breakouts and
- 4:55Speaker 2: disciplined through the neutral zone, it's hard. It's a hard
- 4:58Speaker 2: game to play.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And the fact that you kept them for two periods,
- 5:01Speaker 1: I think what they had like six shots on goals. Yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 1: through two periods. They aren't good. And considering the way
- 5:05Speaker 1: they play.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I think for the weekend five on five, I think
- 5:08Speaker 2: it was under fifteen. So wow, No, defensively we played
- 5:12Speaker 2: pretty well.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Yeah, And then you jump from a game like that,
- 5:16Speaker 4: a weekend like that against Boston University, a number three
- 5:19Speaker 4: team in the country, probably the first test where you
- 5:23Speaker 4: would come into the season saying, Okay, we've got good
- 5:25Speaker 4: team speed, how do you think that the team speed
- 5:28Speaker 4: looked against one of the best teams in the country.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Oh, I thought it was fine. Like you know, one
- 5:33Speaker 2: of the things in that game that I was encouraged
- 5:35Speaker 2: about was because against Colgate we gave up a lot
- 5:39Speaker 2: of odd man rushes. I thought we played very loose.
- 5:43Speaker 2: And then against BU that was certainly point of emphasis
- 5:46Speaker 2: was we cannot ignite their transition game and you know,
- 5:49Speaker 2: we turned to puck over and they got a breakaway
- 5:52Speaker 2: and then we had a turnover in the third period
- 5:55Speaker 2: that led to a three on two. But other than that,
- 5:58Speaker 2: I don't think we gave up any odd man rushes.
- 6:00Speaker 2: So it was that was encouraging. I like that.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And when there was a goalie situation that happened at
- 6:07Speaker 1: the end of the second Holy Cross game, that meant
- 6:10Speaker 1: you had to put Thomas Haney and that we will
- 6:12Speaker 1: get to that when we come back.
- 6:13Speaker 3: It is the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show.
- 6:15Speaker 1: It's show number two of the season for laved Bear
