- 1:01Speaker 1: And you know, I.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Like to do different podcasts from time to time. I
- 1:07Speaker 2: get asked often, I guess because of my radio background. Yes,
- 1:11Speaker 2: and I also get asked to do them. But you know,
- 1:15Speaker 2: you got me in the right mood.
- 1:16Speaker 5: Ah, you were polite.
- 1:19Speaker 4: I was polite.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Yeah, you're very polite.
- 1:20Speaker 2: You're very gracious, and it made it very easy for
- 1:24Speaker 2: me to say, yes.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Thank you. That was so nice.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Apparently you're charming when you want to be.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Yes, I am so.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I've been told my ex husband will can tell you
- 1:34Speaker 3: the other sorry to make if you feel that.
- 1:37Speaker 6: Way after you leave the conversation with us.
- 1:40Speaker 4: I'm so glad that you hear like you're such an icon.
- 1:42Speaker 3: You are like we, you know, listen to you for
- 1:47Speaker 3: our lives, you know, Molly, I.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Get that, you know as I I've been doing comedy
- 1:53Speaker 2: for the past six and a half years, been you know,
- 1:56Speaker 2: doing a lot in the Northeast, and then many times
- 1:59Speaker 2: you run into people and it's complimentary, but it makes
- 2:03Speaker 2: me laugh when they say, Google Johnny, I grew up
- 2:05Speaker 2: with you. Yeah, and I'm like, oh my god, I'm
- 2:08Speaker 2: that old.
- 2:09Speaker 4: No. No, but you're but what you do you started
- 2:12Speaker 4: when you were very younger.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Yeah you know what I mean. Yeah, Well I had a
- 2:15Speaker 1: long career too.
- 2:16Speaker 2: And one of the comments I get is, you know,
- 2:20Speaker 2: I'll meet somebody, you know, like in their thirties, early thirties,
- 2:24Speaker 2: and they'll say, when I was driving to school, I
- 2:27Speaker 2: told my mother, you better put Goolby Johnny Hans on
- 2:31Speaker 2: the radio.
- 2:32Speaker 6: Literally, that's the conversation I just have before I got
- 2:34Speaker 6: here with my mom.
- 2:34Speaker 5: She's liked going to see Google Johnny.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Remember we used to put them on the radio. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:38Speaker 1: So I loved it.
- 2:39Speaker 2: It's pretty funny to hear that, and it's very complimentary
- 2:42Speaker 2: and I'm very flattered by it. And uh, you know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: when you know, like we're in a podcast, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 2: it's similar. We are speaking, but we don't know how
- 2:52Speaker 2: many people are speaking to so like it's station like
- 2:55Speaker 2: kat you Over the course of the week, they had
- 2:57Speaker 2: two million plus listeners. So I'm in a room with
- 3:02Speaker 2: six to eight people and I don't I can make
- 3:07Speaker 2: I knew I was making the people in the room laugh,
- 3:10Speaker 2: but I didn't, you know. I would go to the
- 3:12Speaker 2: gym and then people would say to me, hey, you
- 3:14Speaker 2: said this, I almost drove off the road and I'm like, oh,
- 3:17Speaker 2: I said, you thought that was funny, and he goes, yeah,
- 3:19Speaker 2: I said, I wasn't trying to be funny.
- 3:22Speaker 5: So interesting, you didn't realize how funny you were and
- 3:25Speaker 5: how many people you were reaching.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Well, I knew how many people I was reaching. I
- 3:28Speaker 2: just you don't know the reactions. And that's the difference.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I do stand up comedy now, so I get that
- 3:33Speaker 2: instant gratification. You know, jo doesn't joke, doesn't work, it's
- 3:37Speaker 2: right in front of me.
- 3:38Speaker 4: How do you feel?
- 3:39Speaker 3: How do you feel about that transition like now that
- 3:41Speaker 3: it's like live right in front of you as opposed
- 3:43Speaker 3: to being on the radio.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Well, you know, if anybody asked me when I am,
- 3:49Speaker 2: even though I had a great radio career, I will
- 3:53Speaker 2: always say I'm a comedian first. It is the the
- 4:00Speaker 2: proudest thing that I've done associated with the brotherhood of comedians.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I love comedians and I love being a part of
- 4:09Speaker 2: being able to call myself a comedian. It's great. It's
- 4:13Speaker 2: the only job that I ever had. Well, you can
- 4:16Speaker 2: get off stage. I'll get off stage, or somebody will
- 4:18Speaker 2: get all stage and they'll say, another comedian will come
- 4:22Speaker 2: up to me and goes that bit that you did
- 4:26Speaker 2: about your aunt is the I wish I wrote that
- 4:30Speaker 2: kill and but sincerely mean it.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what I mean? A compliment about your
- 4:36Speaker 1: work that is not just like to butter you up.
- 4:40Speaker 1: You know, like guy goes.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Your peer from your peers such a respect.
- 4:45Speaker 2: You get that acknowledgment from your peers, and it's you know,
- 4:50Speaker 2: it's it's really meaningful to me. I mean, I've never
- 4:53Speaker 2: had that kind of work thing.
- 4:55Speaker 1: You know.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Radio is different, Yeah, you know, I mean radio personalities
- 4:59Speaker 2: have reputation for being quirky.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's well deserved. You know you are.
- 5:07Speaker 4: I mean, you are hilarious.
- 5:08Speaker 1: You are so funny.
- 5:09Speaker 4: I mean, you know you are.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I mean my mother.
- 5:12Speaker 2: You know, my mother said to me when I was sixteen,
- 5:15Speaker 2: I used to break my mother's so bad.
- 5:19Speaker 1: No mom, I but she my mother.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Oddly enough, my mother was Polish and my father was Sicilian.
- 5:26Speaker 2: So when I was sixteen, my mother looked at me.
- 5:29Speaker 2: She goes, Johnny boy, I gotta tell you, I thought
- 5:33Speaker 2: you were weird. I said, well, what makes you say that?
- 5:36Speaker 2: She goes, no, I get your jokes now, I said, Mom,
- 5:42Speaker 2: you're Polish.
- 5:44Speaker 4: So she lies.
- 5:47Speaker 1: She had a wonderful sense of humor.
- 5:49Speaker 2: She was great, God rest her soul. She was so
- 5:51Speaker 2: kind to my mother. My mother was just you know,
- 5:56Speaker 2: you ever hear that expression A good egg? Yeah? She
- 5:59Speaker 2: was people like when anybody needed help, they came to
- 6:02Speaker 2: see my mother.
- 6:03Speaker 1: You know, she was always there, you know, is.
- 6:05Speaker 5: That where you get your humor from?
- 6:07Speaker 2: No, I'm not my father too, because my father was funny,
- 6:11Speaker 2: but he never told a joke.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Oh it was just naturally funny.
- 6:15Speaker 1: You know.
- 6:16Speaker 2: He was really sarcastic, you know, you know, like he
- 6:22Speaker 2: was great.
- 6:23Speaker 1: He was so funny.
- 6:26Speaker 2: My mother was polish, like I said, And when I
- 6:30Speaker 2: was on the radio and it was the height of
- 6:31Speaker 2: my career, took my parents out.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:35Speaker 2: So the check came and my mother goes, soal pick
- 6:38Speaker 2: it up. She goes, what do you mean, what do
- 6:41Speaker 2: you want me to pick it up for? She goes,
- 6:43Speaker 2: he only works four hours a day. He has a
- 6:46Speaker 2: part time job.
- 6:48Speaker 1: My father goes, do you have any idea how much
- 6:50Speaker 1: money he makes?
- 6:52Speaker 2: She goes, I want you to pick up the check.
- 6:54Speaker 2: My mother thought I had a part time job on
- 6:56Speaker 2: the radio because I only worked four hours. So my father,
- 7:00Speaker 2: my father got so mad he picked up the check.
- 7:02Speaker 2: I said, you better leave a big tip. These people
- 7:04Speaker 2: know me.
- 7:05Speaker 7: So he goes, you're thirty eight years old. I'm still
- 7:08Speaker 7: paying for you. Do you have no idea You're going
- 7:10Speaker 7: to tell your mother, how much money you made? And
- 7:13Speaker 7: then one of the funniest things.
- 7:17Speaker 2: I was at my career was really it was in
- 7:19Speaker 2: their early maybe two thousand and four, and the radio
- 7:23Speaker 2: station was blowing up, and so is my career with it.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And my mother comes home and she goes, Johnny Boy,
- 7:29Speaker 2: Johnny Boy. You'll know she's calling Johnny by Johnny Boy.
- 7:31Speaker 2: You'll never believe what happened today. I said, what happened?
- 7:34Speaker 2: She goes, I went to get my hair done, colored
- 7:38Speaker 2: and cut, and they would not charge me because I'm
- 7:42Speaker 2: your mom. So I said, all the things I've done
- 7:46Speaker 2: in my life, and now you think I made it
- 7:49Speaker 2: because you got a free haircut.
- 7:51Speaker 5: That means a lot to a woman.
- 7:52Speaker 7: I got to tell you so polish, yeah, yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 2: So my mother was cute like that. You know that
- 8:00Speaker 2: my dad was to it. So my father this is
- 8:03Speaker 2: how my father sense of humor.
- 8:06Speaker 1: You'll get it. We're sitting down in the living room.
- 8:08Speaker 2: He goes, you know, I accomplished a lot of things
- 8:10Speaker 2: in my life. You know, I was a U police
- 8:13Speaker 2: force for twenty seven years because I was the youngest
- 8:17Speaker 2: councilman for ten years.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Is that where you're from, youngers, No, Bronx Bronx.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Okay, and he goes, uh, I was in the Korean War.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I said, you did do a lot, and he was
- 8:28Speaker 2: going on. So he goes, if one more person introduces
- 8:33Speaker 2: me as fucking gumba Johnny's father, he goes, I'm gonna puke.
- 8:38Speaker 1: So I said, I said, you.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Made me exactly uske.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Yeah, that was my dad sent you to me, you know.
- 8:46Speaker 2: And my mom was very very sweet. I mean, I
- 8:48Speaker 2: just we had a great household growing up. You know,
- 8:53Speaker 2: the strength of my life was in the fact that
- 8:56Speaker 2: there was not one day in my life that I
- 8:59Speaker 2: thought what my parents would split up. I can't even
- 9:02Speaker 2: I could hardly remember arguments, wow, anything.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it was very uh.
- 9:08Speaker 2: You know, I mean we had her moments, but it
- 9:11Speaker 2: was a rock solid household. Yeah yeah, and I got it.
- 9:17Speaker 2: That really laid a good foundation for me emotionally.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, I mean it's important, you know.
- 9:24Speaker 5: I don't know, if you see it a lot today,
- 9:26Speaker 5: I think it's time.
- 9:27Speaker 2: No, I mean, it's just well, it's too easy to
- 9:29Speaker 2: quit right exactly, you know what I mean.
- 9:31Speaker 1: My mother told me a story. She was married.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Three weeks she went back home to her mother and
- 9:34Speaker 2: mother goes, what are you doing here? She goes, I
- 9:36Speaker 2: don't think I could do this. My mother, my mother
- 9:38Speaker 2: threw out her house. So you go back to your husband.
- 9:41Speaker 2: You never come back here again. And my mother last
- 9:44Speaker 2: and tells her that story, and that was the mentality. Yes,
- 9:47Speaker 2: what there weren't many opportunities for women then, you know,
- 9:51Speaker 2: as far.
- 9:51Speaker 4: As workwise, get married to get out of the house.
- 9:54Speaker 3: My sister got married to get away from my father
- 9:56Speaker 3: because she wasn't allowed to chet to be home at
- 9:58Speaker 3: nine o'clock.
- 10:00Speaker 2: That's interesting, you know, it's not like that now now.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Now a guy could you know, you know, it used
- 10:05Speaker 2: to be you know, women would you know, go into
- 10:09Speaker 2: a bar and you know, look for a guy with
- 10:10Speaker 2: a good career. Now you're a guy, you can look
- 10:13Speaker 2: for a woman with a good career.
- 10:14Speaker 3: She probably probably, But I feel like it's because, I mean, seriously,
- 10:20Speaker 3: they made divorce too.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Easy now, and I think that's horrible. They should not make.
- 10:24Speaker 3: It so easy because if you're gonna get married, because
- 10:26Speaker 3: they was like, oh, well, you know what, it's not
- 10:27Speaker 3: working out, you know, I don't feel like, no, it
- 10:30Speaker 3: shouldn't be that easy for people to divorce. And it's
- 10:33Speaker 3: and it's all about the family, and it's about like
- 10:35Speaker 3: the and I think that that's the problem with the society.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Today is that the family unit is not together.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Is it not like us?
- 10:42Speaker 4: And that's a fabric of any society.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Well yeah, I mean, and and the.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Any ethnicity, like in other words, like right now, Asians
- 10:53Speaker 2: are have the highest media and income, but they also
- 10:58Speaker 2: have the lowest rated divorce.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Absolutely, you know what I mean.
- 11:01Speaker 2: So and East Indians also, So you know, the nuclear family,
- 11:07Speaker 2: that is really what makes the world go round. I mean,
- 11:12Speaker 2: I mean if I can't even imagine what my life
- 11:14Speaker 2: would be like without my dad, yeah.
- 11:17Speaker 5: You know, I mean I see for my own father.
- 11:19Speaker 5: My grandmother.
- 11:21Speaker 6: Drove to Mexico in nineteen fifty nine pregnant with my
- 11:27Speaker 6: father to get a divorce because it was so hard
- 11:29Speaker 6: to get a divorce, and she changed her name, so
- 11:31Speaker 6: she trove to Mexico to do that. Very not normal,
- 11:33Speaker 6: you shouldn't do that, but it was so are you like.
- 11:35Speaker 1: An illegal immigrant?
- 11:38Speaker 6: Don't judge me in some way in someway, But she
- 11:42Speaker 6: changed our last name, like she did her whole thing
- 11:44Speaker 6: because she wanted Oh yeah, they made it impossible, right,
- 11:47Speaker 6: they made it impossible where now like you're a point
- 11:49Speaker 6: you could just do these things.
- 11:51Speaker 5: But I always think of that and I'm like, wow,
- 11:53Speaker 5: it's so hard for her.
- 11:54Speaker 6: Now I have friends today pregnant, have a kid, don't
- 11:57Speaker 6: have a kid, three kids that we're getting divorce.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Oh, we're just separating. I'm like, like, I mean, do
- 12:02Speaker 5: you be happy?
- 12:03Speaker 6: You know that's important, But I do wonder if that
- 12:05Speaker 6: sort of stick with it, try to work it out.
- 12:08Speaker 6: If it was sort of instilled in us a little earlier,
- 12:10Speaker 6: maybe we would be doing that more.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Well. I think, well, I'm a boomer, so I come
- 12:13Speaker 2: from that generation, you know. And I saw a TV show.
- 12:17Speaker 2: I don't know if it was Oprah and or Doctor Phil.
- 12:21Speaker 2: I think it was interviewed six women who got divorced. Okay,
- 12:25Speaker 2: six women who got divorced. Three of them said, if
- 12:28Speaker 2: I knew what I knew now, I would never get divorced.
- 12:32Speaker 2: If I knew the financial hardships I was gonna, you know,
- 12:35Speaker 2: or if I knew the type of men that was
- 12:37Speaker 2: out there. I had no idea. My husband was a
- 12:40Speaker 2: good guy. He wasn't perfect, but he was a good guy.
- 12:44Speaker 2: And they said, I wish I never did it. You
- 12:46Speaker 2: know what I mean, And I think I think a
- 12:48Speaker 2: lot of people.
- 12:51Speaker 1: A lot, you know.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I mean, I mean, if you listen to the wedding vows, yeah,
- 12:56Speaker 2: I mean for better or for worse.
- 12:58Speaker 1: You know it doesn't say for better and not so bad.
- 13:01Speaker 3: You know, it's not always going to be good. And
- 13:03Speaker 3: that's what I think the problem is today. And I
- 13:05Speaker 3: think that my white thing is with these new feminists.
- 13:08Speaker 3: They've wrecked, wrecked the whole thing about family life.
- 13:13Speaker 4: We can have it all.
- 13:15Speaker 3: You don't want it all, want it all, like I
- 13:17Speaker 3: don't want it all, and like, listen, listen, I'm a
- 13:21Speaker 3: strong woman. I'm a powerful woman. I have my own businesses.
- 13:25Speaker 4: I have a gun. I have a gun.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you know, I've been charged with a soul before.
- 13:31Speaker 3: But I still want a man to treat me like
- 13:35Speaker 3: a lady, open the door for me, treat me. And
- 13:37Speaker 3: I don't think that's being making you subservience, And I
- 13:40Speaker 3: think it's putting you on a pedestal.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Well, I'm sure you equally will treat your partners the
- 13:45Speaker 2: same way, you know what I mean.
- 13:47Speaker 1: But you know they say.
- 13:51Speaker 2: It's like uncool to say, marry your own kind, But
- 13:56Speaker 2: you know, being Italian and I married another sillient too,
- 14:02Speaker 2: just just celebrating the holidays the same way.
- 14:05Speaker 4: And that's still by the way, I'm still a thing.
- 14:08Speaker 5: That is still a fight even though you're both Italian.
- 14:10Speaker 6: My husband's little Irish, but we don't talk about that
- 14:12Speaker 6: as my mother gets upset.
- 14:13Speaker 5: But like that's still a fight and we're both of
- 14:15Speaker 5: the same.
- 14:15Speaker 3: But I feel like if Italians married Irish, it's kind
- 14:17Speaker 3: of it's okay, like it's it.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Well, I don't know if it's okay, but it's accepted.
- 14:22Speaker 4: It's exactly we acknowledge it. They do make beautiful children.
- 14:30Speaker 3: But I think it's that's probably the most like the
- 14:34Speaker 3: common nationality that it could be as common for us,
- 14:38Speaker 3: you know.
- 14:38Speaker 4: But it's like it's so true. It's like and I
- 14:41Speaker 4: hate to say that it sound politically incorrect, but.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it does sound politically intocorrect. But I couldn't marry
- 14:47Speaker 2: a woman that didn't understand my love for food right
- 14:51Speaker 2: and eating and how much I have to.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Eat right, Like when you come to your mother's house,
- 14:57Speaker 3: how much if you're not hungry, you can't come inside
- 15:01Speaker 3: my house because they're gonna feed you.
- 15:03Speaker 4: That's it.
- 15:04Speaker 6: I couldn't marry someone that didn't understand my food salts.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Yes, literally, okay, what are you doing? Just have somebody
- 15:10Speaker 4: to eat all.
- 15:14Speaker 2: I had a girlfriend come over my house on Sunday.
- 15:16Speaker 2: We ate every Sunday at two o'clock, same time, same meal.
- 15:21Speaker 2: My mother would cook, my father, everybody would be there.
- 15:23Speaker 2: It was great in a.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Full especially your mom cook Italian food.
- 15:26Speaker 1: My mother. This is a sidebar.
- 15:30Speaker 2: I grew up in the Bronx on Seymour Avenue, right
- 15:32Speaker 2: on Gunhill Road, right.
- 15:34Speaker 3: And you know Catherine no dude, right, Well she's I'm
- 15:37Speaker 3: close with her too, so she does the podcast.
- 15:39Speaker 4: With me sometimes.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Katy's great.
- 15:41Speaker 4: Yeah, she's great people.
- 15:42Speaker 1: And we're in the play together.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Actually she's doing another play with Colin in. Vinie Piazza, Yeah,
- 15:49Speaker 4: Piazza are you?
- 15:50Speaker 2: Are you?
- 15:50Speaker 1: Vinnie Pizza was my best man at my wedding.
- 15:53Speaker 4: Really, that's so amazing.
- 15:56Speaker 1: So, which was at City Hall wasn't much of a wedding.
- 16:00Speaker 2: I don't want to brag, like like we were at Russo's.
- 16:02Speaker 3: On the bagod that's MyoD.
- 16:06Speaker 2: I called the can you got me go? Pink pounding around.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I called up Vinnie and I said Vinnie, I'm getting
- 16:14Speaker 2: married tomorrow. I need you to be a witness for me.
- 16:18Speaker 2: So he goes, where are you going? I said, city hall?
- 16:20Speaker 2: He goes, okay, city Hall. He had flowers. He was
- 16:24Speaker 2: the best man and made of honor.
- 16:26Speaker 1: At the same time.
- 16:28Speaker 4: That's amazing.
- 16:29Speaker 2: It was so unromantic. My wife was the only woman
- 16:32Speaker 2: there who wasn't pregnant and spoke English. And I mean
- 16:36Speaker 2: it was just I got married with like seventy two landscapers.
- 16:43Speaker 2: I mean, it was not romantic at all. We got
- 16:48Speaker 2: in the elevator. You could ask Vinnie this, you have
- 16:50Speaker 2: had many shove We got in the elevator. It was
- 16:52Speaker 2: one woman in the elevator. We pressed the second floor.
- 16:55Speaker 2: I'll never forget. The woman was in the back of
- 16:57Speaker 2: the elevator and she goes, goes to my wife, don't
- 17:00Speaker 2: do it, honey.
- 17:02Speaker 1: He's going to leave you anyway.
- 17:05Speaker 2: So Vinnie goes, excuse me, miss, we haven't don't do it, honey.
- 17:10Speaker 2: He's probably a piece of shit like mine. Oh my god,
- 17:14Speaker 2: I'm not even married yet.
- 17:15Speaker 5: She probably go to the city hall.
- 17:17Speaker 3: You think it's like it's literally I got married in
- 17:20Speaker 3: city hall too.
- 17:21Speaker 2: What's your name, John? What's your name, your Danielle. Okay,
- 17:25Speaker 2: you're married. You can leave now, that's it.
- 17:27Speaker 1: That's it. Then I went to Sarah Bets for breakfast.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Yeah, but I got to ask you how long you're married?
- 17:31Speaker 2: Nah?
- 17:32Speaker 1: October nineteen years?
- 17:33Speaker 4: Come on, it worked. Oh yeah, you didn't need the
- 17:35Speaker 4: big wedding.
- 17:36Speaker 1: I have a.
- 17:38Speaker 2: She's dropped dead gorgeous my wife, and she's also very
- 17:43Speaker 2: loyal and very loving. So that's all I asked for.
- 17:46Speaker 4: Yeah, more, do you need children?
- 17:49Speaker 2: No, my wife got sick and when we first got married,
- 17:51Speaker 2: she got chronic lime disease. Oh so we unfortunately, we
- 17:55Speaker 2: weren't in a position to have children.
- 17:58Speaker 1: I mean, and you know I got married at fifty.
- 18:02Speaker 4: So that's the first time you were ever married.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Do you think it was close to your career that
- 18:07Speaker 4: you did married before that?
- 18:09Speaker 2: No?
- 18:09Speaker 1: I think it had a lot to do with me
- 18:11Speaker 1: being an asshole. Well, I mean I.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Think that was I love an honest guy guy I.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Had, I mean define asshole.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:24Speaker 1: No, I wasn't an ass an asshole.
- 18:27Speaker 2: No, I wasn't either. I just I never was able to.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Now.
- 18:34Speaker 2: I had a very loving relationship with my mother, and uh,
- 18:38Speaker 2: you know, my mother taught me how to love, and
- 18:40Speaker 2: my father taught me how to live. So I had
- 18:42Speaker 2: a great it's a great love. Yeah, I had a
- 18:44Speaker 2: great combination that way. So I had a deep respect
- 18:48Speaker 2: from women. But I had I had such an interesting
- 18:52Speaker 2: life and so many different career changes. And I don't know,
- 18:59Speaker 2: besides my wife, I don't think I ever believed a
- 19:03Speaker 2: woman when she said I love you.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Really.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Yeah, my wife's the only person that when she told
- 19:10Speaker 2: me she loved me. And I'm like, this idiot actually
- 19:15Speaker 2: actually means it.
- 19:16Speaker 4: Why would you think?
- 19:18Speaker 2: I don't know, it's just like a gut thing with me,
- 19:20Speaker 2: you know what I mean? It was like, you know,
- 19:22Speaker 2: I guess I was a little bit of a commitment fold.
- 19:25Speaker 2: You know, I always found like eighty five ninety percent.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Of what I was.
- 19:30Speaker 2: You know what it is You meet people, right and
- 19:33Speaker 2: then this far away from being perfect for you, right,
- 19:36Speaker 2: but it might as.
- 19:36Speaker 5: Well be a mile that's not your soulmate.
- 19:39Speaker 1: No, No, so.
- 19:41Speaker 2: My wife, I met her and I got married fourteen
- 19:44Speaker 2: weeks later.
- 19:45Speaker 4: That was it. Well, actually, you know, it's not a soulmate.
- 19:47Speaker 4: It's a twin flame? Is is that? What that said?
- 19:50Speaker 4: Twin flame is a personal posed to be.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I do something wrong. Oh, oh my my shirts bunching up.
- 19:57Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 19:58Speaker 4: I didn't see it. I didn't notice.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I worry about it. Oh, don't shoot higher, lift the camera.
- 20:06Speaker 5: I already asked her about her She knees, you know.
- 20:08Speaker 4: I facing she.
- 20:09Speaker 3: I got all sorts of fixed, fucked up ship going
- 20:12Speaker 3: on over here.
- 20:13Speaker 1: I mean, I gotta tell you people everything.
- 20:17Speaker 5: So you got your twin flames.
- 20:18Speaker 2: She's got you, yeah, I mean, I'm very very happy
- 20:22Speaker 2: with my wife. We we you know, when she got sick,
- 20:28Speaker 2: that was a really trying time. I don't want to
- 20:31Speaker 2: say for the both of us, really for her, you know, but.
- 20:34Speaker 4: It's got to be for the both of you because
- 20:36Speaker 4: you had to go through with her that.
- 20:39Speaker 2: It's hard to see somebody, uh, you love suffer.
- 20:43Speaker 4: It's hard.
- 20:44Speaker 2: It was difficult, but I came to really love her
- 20:48Speaker 2: much more deeply because she was so tough.
- 20:51Speaker 1: My wife's a.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Tough sob and she's Sicilian.
- 20:54Speaker 2: She's yeah, seventy five percent Sicilian and the other twenty
- 20:57Speaker 2: five percent is German. So I don't know if that's
- 21:01Speaker 2: a great combination.
- 21:03Speaker 5: As nails man.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Yeah, she's tough as nails, is right, So you know,
- 21:08Speaker 2: we're still at it together. And you know she does.
- 21:12Speaker 2: I got her doing videos with me online now.
- 21:14Speaker 4: I was watching it so funny, funny, she's good.
- 21:17Speaker 5: Yeah, you're both funny. You are your chemistry together.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Well, yeah, my wife's it's funny now because we go
- 21:25Speaker 2: out to the supermarket and I'll be there and people
- 21:27Speaker 2: will come up to my wife.
- 21:29Speaker 1: I love your videos. What about me? What about me?
- 21:33Speaker 1: I have a career too.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Oh you're good, Johnny book. But she's really good. And
- 21:38Speaker 2: I'm like Jesus Christ, I created a monster I love.
- 21:41Speaker 1: It's gonna have to kill her. I love it.
- 21:44Speaker 4: And you said she's an actress too.
- 21:46Speaker 2: She was for a brief period of time and she
- 21:48Speaker 2: did very, very well, and she just lost interest. I
- 21:51Speaker 2: don't know why. I wish she would pick it up again.
- 21:58Speaker 2: You know, she's very attractive, and she's comedically gifted. You
- 22:02Speaker 2: could see with the timing and all that, and she's
- 22:08Speaker 2: the camera loves her.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what I mean. My wife is one
- 22:10Speaker 1: of those people where beautiful lady, Yeah, it translates.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Sometimes people are attractive, and.
- 22:17Speaker 1: When it doesn't translate into them, well, we're.
- 22:19Speaker 4: One of those. Were those lucky one.
- 22:21Speaker 5: I'm going to thank you and I laugh really love.
- 22:25Speaker 6: In my early early twenties, I once took an acting
- 22:28Speaker 6: class and the.
- 22:29Speaker 5: Teacher walks in and stood by behind the camera. You're
- 22:34Speaker 5: laughing already, Johnny, don't even know where I'm going with this?
- 22:37Speaker 4: Do you feel the same way?
- 22:38Speaker 5: And the teacher looks behy and the can't just sit there.
- 22:41Speaker 6: So I sat and pasting the camera, and the teacher
- 22:43Speaker 6: sat behind the camera and.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Went, oh, oh, you've got a looking in person. I
- 22:49Speaker 5: was like, oh my god. And then he's like, all right,
- 22:51Speaker 5: let's start the scene.
- 22:52Speaker 6: I'm like, you just told me I'm better looking in person,
- 22:54Speaker 6: so you're like ship through that lens and I'm in
- 22:57Speaker 6: an on camera acting class.
- 23:00Speaker 1: I wish you told me that story off.
- 23:05Speaker 6: Listen, don't tell me I look like the way he
- 23:07Speaker 6: said it till this day. It made me left so hard.
- 23:09Speaker 4: But isn't it hard with it?
- 23:11Speaker 3: I mean as being an actor, I mean now all
- 23:13Speaker 3: the time I'm doing it now in my second life career,
- 23:17Speaker 3: I'm doing now and I'm like, I guess maybe because
- 23:20Speaker 3: I'm I guess. I'm in the beauty business, and it's
- 23:23Speaker 3: like when I'm doing patients, I'm like on stage every
- 23:26Speaker 3: day talking to patients. While they're looking at you, they're
- 23:28Speaker 3: looking at me, and they'll look and they're trying to
- 23:31Speaker 3: like size me up and see like, so obviously I
- 23:33Speaker 3: can't look like the crip keeper because they would never
- 23:35Speaker 3: want to get a treatment.
- 23:37Speaker 4: From me, because if I look like that, they were
- 23:38Speaker 4: like doing anything with this ugly lady.
- 23:41Speaker 3: You don't look right and exactly if she looks like ship,
- 23:44Speaker 3: then I'm gonna look like shit.
- 23:46Speaker 4: So it's kind of I guess.
- 23:47Speaker 3: I mean, they weren't hand in hand, but it is
- 23:50Speaker 3: difficult when somebody comes in and like they'll tell you
- 23:52Speaker 3: what you look so much better.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Off coming, so much better looking off yourself.
- 23:57Speaker 5: But that's why I did theater because I was like,
- 23:59Speaker 5: I'm gonna.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Be in funny Now are you?
- 24:01Speaker 2: Are you guys interviewing each other? Now is the segment
- 24:05Speaker 2: of the show that.
- 24:06Speaker 5: Tends to happen.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Sometimes happened. You know what will tell you women, this
- 24:09Speaker 3: is what's gonna happen.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Come on, Johnny, you know that, ladies and gentlemen on camera.
- 24:14Speaker 2: I just want everybody to know I never do it.
- 24:16Speaker 2: My career would end like this here and now. This
- 24:21Speaker 2: is the end of goomba Johnny. Right, yeah, there's podcast.
- 24:24Speaker 2: You'll never see me publicly again. You girls killed Johnny?
- 24:29Speaker 4: You look great, you look great on camera.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Oh, I don't know about that.
- 24:32Speaker 4: You know what you look like? Eric Roberts does that?
- 24:36Speaker 1: You know what?
- 24:36Speaker 4: I get a looking.
- 24:39Speaker 1: I get John Cena.
- 24:41Speaker 4: Yes, oh my god.
- 24:42Speaker 5: Yes, you guys could do like a brother's thing.
- 24:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:45Speaker 2: If I have a baseball hat on, definitely interesting. And
- 24:50Speaker 2: I'll tell you. Oh man, it's a long story. I
- 24:54Speaker 2: won't tell you.
- 24:56Speaker 6: Oh no, you gotta tell us slid a shortened version
- 24:59Speaker 6: as my fault, A long story short.
- 25:01Speaker 4: You know.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I worked with Anthony Rodia.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Yeah, so we n we were working in Boston, right,
- 25:08Speaker 2: So Anthony goes, I want to do a meet and
- 25:10Speaker 2: greet and meet the people, meet the people.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Right after the show.
- 25:14Speaker 2: This was when we first started working together, six and
- 25:17Speaker 2: a half years ago.
- 25:18Speaker 1: This was our first gig outside.
- 25:20Speaker 4: Now you know him from from the Bronx, right, you know?
- 25:23Speaker 1: No, I know him from Nursehell. Really yeah, I lived
- 25:26Speaker 1: in Nurse Show. Yeah for a short period of time.
- 25:28Speaker 1: But he's he's twenty five years younger than me. Yeah, so.
- 25:33Speaker 4: A lot of people from the Bronx moved.
- 25:35Speaker 2: To new Yeah, west Chester, mayor pac up there, Yeah, Bronx.
- 25:41Speaker 1: They fled.
- 25:43Speaker 2: So so he goes, let's do the meet and greet.
- 25:47Speaker 2: This is a true story. So they were like fourteen people. Now,
- 25:51Speaker 2: it was the first show we did.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Outside. There's a drunk couple at the end.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Guy the guy is really drunk, and he sees me
- 25:58Speaker 2: and goes Johnny, Johnny.
- 26:01Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, this is not gonna be good.
- 26:03Speaker 4: He goes to did anybody ever tell you you look
- 26:05Speaker 4: like Tom Brady?
- 26:06Speaker 2: I said, I said no, he's more in Boston. I said,
- 26:10Speaker 2: nobody's ever told me that. So Anthony puts down his
- 26:15Speaker 2: pen he was signing on. He goes, dude, what are
- 26:17Speaker 2: you drunk? He looks nothing like Tom Brady? What makes
- 26:19Speaker 2: you think he looks like Tom Brady? So I said,
- 26:22Speaker 2: I didn't say anything. Go Johnny, do you think you
- 26:24Speaker 2: look like Tom Brady? I said, no, Anthony, he's drunk.
- 26:28Speaker 2: So I got a little pissed off, you know Anthony
- 26:31Speaker 2: that Anthony was so vocal about it. Not pissed off,
- 26:34Speaker 2: but you know, a little agitated. So the next like
- 26:37Speaker 2: six cities we went to we would do to meet
- 26:40Speaker 2: and greet, and then I would go to the back
- 26:42Speaker 2: of the line and I would grab somebody. I said,
- 26:44Speaker 2: when you get to the front, tell Anthony how much
- 26:47Speaker 2: I look like Tom Brady.
- 26:49Speaker 4: Beautiful?
- 26:49Speaker 2: Right, So they would get I would just stand on
- 26:51Speaker 2: the side and the people would go up.
- 26:54Speaker 1: You know, doesn't Johnny look like Tom Brady? And he
- 26:58Speaker 1: does not, right. So this went on for six cities
- 27:02Speaker 1: right in there. Yeah.
- 27:03Speaker 2: So we're in Cincinnati, were having breakfast with drinking coffee,
- 27:06Speaker 2: and he goes to me, you know, Johnny, it goes,
- 27:08Speaker 2: I don't think so, but the whole country thinks you
- 27:10Speaker 2: look like Tom Brady. So I said, I don't know
- 27:13Speaker 2: what to tell you. Maybe I do look like Tom Brady.
- 27:15Speaker 2: And then that night he caught me.
- 27:18Speaker 5: In the back line, like the whole country can't be wrong.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Whole country can't be wrong. So it was pretty It
- 27:24Speaker 2: was pretty funny. I've had people tell me Brian Cranston.
- 27:28Speaker 4: Maybe yeah, yeah.
- 27:30Speaker 2: But John Cena mostly if I have a baseball hat
- 27:33Speaker 2: and I'm in a supermarket, all all the all the
- 27:36Speaker 2: Latino workers up, yeah, John Cena. Yeah, I'm like, I'm
- 27:41Speaker 2: not John Cena's grandpa.
- 27:44Speaker 6: You definitely have a recognizable face, obviously, but it's it's
- 27:48Speaker 6: funny because as in my brain as a kid goomba,
- 27:51Speaker 6: Johnny didn't.
- 27:51Speaker 5: Have a face, had a voice.
- 27:52Speaker 4: To me, it was just a voice. Right.
- 27:54Speaker 6: And now that of course you're touring and all these things,
- 27:56Speaker 6: and you're on stage and seeing people.
- 27:57Speaker 5: Now you have a face, but you in general have
- 27:59Speaker 5: a recognizable face.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Well, you know, it's weird because if when I was
- 28:04Speaker 2: on the radio, and if I was in the store
- 28:07Speaker 2: or a supermarket, you know, and and if I raised
- 28:11Speaker 2: my voice and say you got baked beans, two women
- 28:14Speaker 2: would turn around.
- 28:15Speaker 1: John never a guy.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Then when you're on the radio, people don't know what
- 28:22Speaker 2: you look like. And then they come up to you. Hey,
- 28:24Speaker 2: I thought you'd be fat, And I said, well, I
- 28:26Speaker 2: like to.
- 28:27Speaker 4: Go to the gym, you'd be smart.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Now where's They say? Where's your mustache?
- 28:32Speaker 5: Do you have one?
- 28:33Speaker 1: No?
- 28:33Speaker 2: I am not Harry. I'm half Polish. I'm not Harry
- 28:38Speaker 2: Polish people. No, people would say that where's mustache?
- 28:41Speaker 4: Yeah, don't have hair?
- 28:45Speaker 1: Yeah, this is this is where I drew the line.
- 28:47Speaker 2: One one woman said to me, I pictured you with
- 28:53Speaker 2: a wife beater with gravy stains on it. And I said,
- 28:59Speaker 2: that's so funny. Because I pictured you with much larger
- 29:02Speaker 2: breasts and I got fed up. I couldn't take it anything.
- 29:10Speaker 2: But people don't, you know. I mean, you know, people
- 29:13Speaker 2: for the most part, are extremely nice, very polite.
- 29:17Speaker 1: I love people, so.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I don't mind interacting with them on any level at all.
- 29:22Speaker 2: And even now, I'm the guy you walk into the elevator,
- 29:27Speaker 2: I start talking to you. Yeah, like, if you walk
- 29:30Speaker 2: down the elevators, Hey, how are you well, I'd like you.
- 29:32Speaker 2: I'd like your ear as you know, how you doing today?
- 29:35Speaker 1: That's me.
- 29:36Speaker 2: And then sometimes people look at me like, all right,
- 29:39Speaker 2: this guy is too friendly.
- 29:42Speaker 1: You know what I mean.
- 29:43Speaker 2: But I'm I'm kind and I'm earnest about it. I
- 29:46Speaker 2: love people. I love meeting new people. My wife says
- 29:49Speaker 2: I talk too much, but I said, you know, how
- 29:51Speaker 2: do you think we pay the bills I talked?
- 29:54Speaker 5: My husband says, it's me.
- 29:55Speaker 2: We're going on vacation.
- 29:55Speaker 4: He goes, don't talk to no one.
- 29:57Speaker 5: Listen. This is how I get through.
- 29:59Speaker 4: Don't make any friends. Can I'm gonna say about that
- 30:02Speaker 4: we have.
- 30:04Speaker 1: That's so funny that you say that. Yeah, yeah, And
- 30:07Speaker 1: I enjoy it.
- 30:08Speaker 2: I enjoy people. I love people, and you know, I mean,
- 30:11Speaker 2: if you don't love people, this this is not your
- 30:15Speaker 2: it's not your business.
- 30:16Speaker 1: But I do. I do like being by myself.
- 30:20Speaker 2: You know, when you get off stage, there's so much
- 30:23Speaker 2: you're so much, so much giving and so much.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Taking, so much.
- 30:28Speaker 2: And then like you know, like when I was on
- 30:30Speaker 2: a radio all right, to give you an example, I
- 30:32Speaker 2: do the radio in the morning, right, and then I
- 30:34Speaker 2: have to do interviews after that, West Coast interviews, celebrity,
- 30:38Speaker 2: so on and so forth. Get out, go out that night,
- 30:43Speaker 2: do two comedy shows, stay on stage for forty five
- 30:47Speaker 2: minutes an hour each show, come home and lay in bed,
- 30:51Speaker 2: and you know, my wife goes, uh, you know, I
- 30:54Speaker 2: think we got a flat in one of the cars.
- 30:56Speaker 1: And I'm like, I just don't have any words, you
- 31:01Speaker 1: know what.
- 31:01Speaker 2: I mean, I don't. I mean, I'm sure we do,
- 31:04Speaker 2: but I got I don't mean.
- 31:06Speaker 1: To be rude.
- 31:07Speaker 5: You got to recharge.
- 31:08Speaker 2: I don't give. I don't give a ship. And then
- 31:10Speaker 2: she she would look at me, and my wife goes,
- 31:12Speaker 2: if the people knew what your real personality was, like,
- 31:16Speaker 2: nobody would pay a time to see you. I said, well,
- 31:20Speaker 2: I hope my secret's safe with you. Yeah, that she's
- 31:24Speaker 2: really funny. Yeah, she's great, She's really great.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Do you ever see yourself back on the radio again?
- 31:33Speaker 2: Yes, I would do it, but it would have to
- 31:37Speaker 2: be the right situation for me and the radio station.
- 31:41Speaker 1: You know, radio has changed a lot, you know. Yeah,
- 31:44Speaker 1: it's a lot different, you know.
- 31:48Speaker 2: I I think there's not a premium on talent now,
- 31:56Speaker 2: you know what I mean. So I don't know if
- 31:59Speaker 2: I could ever get back in. I mean I would
- 32:01Speaker 2: under the right circumstances. But they eliminated so many jobs.
- 32:07Speaker 2: And what that does is, like, let's say, Elvis Durant's
- 32:10Speaker 2: a very dear friend of mine. We had the same
- 32:14Speaker 2: agent for years, right, Elvis is just a wonderful person.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Elvis is on eighty morning shelves across the country. So
- 32:21Speaker 2: what happened He eliminated eighty staffs. Okay, the company saves money,
- 32:27Speaker 2: so on and so for So when you do that
- 32:31Speaker 2: and you do voiceover work on the weekend, what you
- 32:33Speaker 2: do is you kill the farm system. You know, where
- 32:36Speaker 2: do you get the new talent from? Even though Elvis
- 32:39Speaker 2: is very deserving. Ryan Seacurs is very deserving of being
- 32:42Speaker 2: on five hundred stations, where does the new talent come from?
- 32:46Speaker 1: You know what I mean, It doesn't.
- 32:47Speaker 2: You know, the new talent used to come from guys
- 32:50Speaker 2: who did the weekend so guys who did overnights, you know,
- 32:53Speaker 2: guys who worked on your staff, you know what I mean,
- 32:56Speaker 2: who watched what you were doing, and you know, got
- 32:58Speaker 2: a break into radio. And I think that's one of
- 33:01Speaker 2: the problems with radio today is that they they had
- 33:05Speaker 2: a good business plan, you know, as far as like,
- 33:10Speaker 2: you know, cutting back on costs and salaries and stuff
- 33:12Speaker 2: like that, but I don't think they took into consideration
- 33:17Speaker 2: the breeding of new talent. Yeah, and that's how you start,
- 33:21Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, yeah, you know, that's.
- 33:23Speaker 1: How you get in it and you get a break.
- 33:24Speaker 1: You know.
- 33:25Speaker 2: It's like, you know, the guy who comes on the
- 33:28Speaker 2: sitcom steals a couple of scenes and then he gets
- 33:31Speaker 2: his own sitcom, you know what I mean.
- 33:32Speaker 4: And that's just how it happens.
- 33:34Speaker 6: Which is also kind of not a thing anymore, right,
- 33:36Speaker 6: It's it's very very much changed.
- 33:39Speaker 4: I think it's just so much content out there.
- 33:42Speaker 6: You can make content on your phone and that all
- 33:43Speaker 6: of a sudden is now a series and that's being
- 33:46Speaker 6: bought up and.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Crazy all of that.
- 33:48Speaker 5: You've interviewed so many people. Do you have like a
- 33:50Speaker 5: favorite interview.
- 33:51Speaker 2: I have a couple. It's funny you said that Luther
- 33:56Speaker 2: Vandros was, you know. I mean, I've I've been fortunate enough, Madonna, Share,
- 34:06Speaker 2: Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears.
- 34:09Speaker 1: I mean, I could go on and on, Ricky Martin,
- 34:11Speaker 1: you know all of them.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Some people come in and you could see the white light.
- 34:18Speaker 2: You could see you could you could see why why
- 34:21Speaker 2: they are. Other people come in and you just mumbled these.
- 34:25Speaker 5: I don't know, because that's fascinating that.
- 34:31Speaker 1: I don't want to I don't want to badmount anybody,
- 34:33Speaker 1: but I will tell you who.
- 34:35Speaker 3: Uh.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Luther Vandros was just such a special person.
- 34:38Speaker 2: I think I did the last radio interview before before
- 34:42Speaker 2: he passed away.
- 34:44Speaker 1: And I love his music.
- 34:47Speaker 2: I was totally totally smitten, not in a sexual way,
- 34:55Speaker 2: a living Newton John.
- 34:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:56Speaker 2: And I just sat there and I said, Sandy G.
- 35:00Speaker 2: She was sitting to the right of me. I'm going
- 35:01Speaker 2: Sandy D, Sandy D. She goes, you know it's me John.
- 35:05Speaker 5: Wow, that was a starstruck moment for you.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Yeah, because of Greece.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 35:11Speaker 5: But she didn't disappoint in person.
- 35:13Speaker 1: No, she was very very sweet.
- 35:15Speaker 2: You know some people and I have to say, you know,
- 35:17Speaker 2: Britney Spears.
- 35:18Speaker 1: He'll tell you what.
- 35:20Speaker 2: I interviewed Britney Spears from when she was sixteen to
- 35:22Speaker 2: like twenty two.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Every year.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Very sweet kid, you know, yeah, I mean, you know,
- 35:30Speaker 2: I mean there was all these misconceptions about her. A
- 35:33Speaker 2: very very nice person. Ricky Martin was ridiculously impressive. He
- 35:39Speaker 2: was like the eye of a hurricane. Everything around him
- 35:41Speaker 2: is going crazy, and Ricky Mark is like, no mistake. Yeah, yeah,
- 35:48Speaker 2: he was a wonderful person.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Who else There was just so many.
- 35:56Speaker 4: I can't that's amazing.
- 35:58Speaker 1: I'll tell you a funny story. You'll know this one.
- 36:02Speaker 2: They arranged a I was in the studio RuPaul and
- 36:06Speaker 2: it was me rupaula sheelvisage, and they arranged from spring
- 36:10Speaker 2: training and interview with Derek Jeeter. Right, So, Derek Cheeter's
- 36:15Speaker 2: on the phone and I'm interviewing. I'm asking him questions
- 36:18Speaker 2: about the team and so on and so forth. And
- 36:20Speaker 2: I said, okay, Rue, you have any questions And he
- 36:22Speaker 2: goes Derek, it's RuPaul and he goes HI with Paul,
- 36:26Speaker 2: and you know, and he goes, do you know Andy,
- 36:32Speaker 2: what's the picture's name? Andy?
- 36:35Speaker 1: No?
- 36:36Speaker 2: Why Andy Pettitt? Yeah, I can't believe I forgot that.
- 36:38Speaker 2: He goes, do you know Andy Pettitt? And he goes, Yeah,
- 36:41Speaker 2: he goes, he's on my team. He goes, I think
- 36:44Speaker 2: he's really cute.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Can you tell him that? And you could hear Derek
- 36:49Speaker 1: Jeter drop the phone and say, who set up this interview?
- 36:53Speaker 2: I mean, you know, you know, and that's why was great.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and he was great for the station. The station
- 37:01Speaker 1: was great for him.
- 37:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:03Speaker 2: I have to say a meeting Roue Paul and working
- 37:07Speaker 2: with Michelle Visage changed all my sensibilities about what the
- 37:14Speaker 2: l gb Q community was about, you know what I mean,
- 37:18Speaker 2: I mean just tremendously. So I never had that insight,
- 37:23Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
- 37:24Speaker 1: I mean I would hardly.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Describe myself as, you know, anti anything, But after meeting
- 37:33Speaker 2: you know, a real the drag wing and then and
- 37:39Speaker 2: then yeah, Michelle is so Michelle is so open minded
- 37:45Speaker 2: and so cool. Uh. It changed all my sensibilities about
- 37:49Speaker 2: the community. And you know, I was never anti, but
- 37:53Speaker 2: I became a big fan.
- 37:54Speaker 5: Yeah, because you finally, like you said, had the insight
- 37:57Speaker 5: from them.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it was it was.
- 37:58Speaker 2: It was wonderful meet and meeting RuPaul was.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Was a game changer for me.
- 38:05Speaker 2: And listening to his stories about what it was like
- 38:08Speaker 2: to be a drag queen in the seventies in the
- 38:12Speaker 2: meatpacking district was ugly.
- 38:14Speaker 4: Yeah, it was ugly, you know.
- 38:16Speaker 2: And people say, oh my god, Bruce Jenner. No, no,
- 38:19Speaker 2: it's not Bruce Jenner. Yeah, definitely, you know Bruce Jenner.
- 38:23Speaker 4: She paved the way.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 38:26Speaker 4: She's wonderful.
- 38:27Speaker 3: I went to her the premiere of the drag Reef
- 38:30Speaker 3: a couple of times the last three years, and she's
- 38:32Speaker 3: really really nice person. I call her she because every
- 38:35Speaker 3: time I'm with her, she's in drag.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:38Speaker 2: When and when you work on the radio, he's not.
- 38:41Speaker 2: He's dressed in like like some protest suit or something
- 38:44Speaker 2: like that.
- 38:44Speaker 1: He's very stylish.
- 38:46Speaker 3: I still look and I don't think she has changed
- 38:50Speaker 3: a bit in twenty some sort of fountain of youth
- 38:52Speaker 3: going on.
- 38:53Speaker 5: I would need to know what's happening.
- 38:54Speaker 4: But she has not changed.
- 38:57Speaker 1: I don't. I don't know how. You know, after everything
- 38:59Speaker 1: he's been through, how was his mind?
- 39:00Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 39:01Speaker 2: And then that way, he's been very inspirational to me.
- 39:03Speaker 2: I mean he really he really could have been in
- 39:07Speaker 2: like a looney bin, you know what I mean. I
- 39:09Speaker 2: mean he went through I mean I don't know everything,
- 39:13Speaker 2: but the little that he told me, and you know,
- 39:16Speaker 2: especially at somebody like that who gets really put in
- 39:21Speaker 2: a position me against the world. Yeah, you know what
- 39:23Speaker 2: I mean. And I never been in that kind of situation.
- 39:27Speaker 2: And to be honest with you, I don't think I
- 39:30Speaker 2: could have handled the kind of pressure that that that
- 39:33Speaker 2: guy had to live with.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Got to respect that, yeah, yeah, you gotta respect it. Man. See,
- 39:39Speaker 1: he's a special person.
- 39:40Speaker 5: How many years were you on the air with him?
- 39:42Speaker 1: He was only on station for two years.
- 39:44Speaker 2: And I didn't work with him on a regular basis
- 39:47Speaker 2: but periodically. But I worked with Michelle for like ten years,
- 39:52Speaker 2: Michelle and I after he left and it was me
- 39:54Speaker 2: and Michelle.
- 39:55Speaker 3: You know, Can I ask you a question? How did
- 39:57Speaker 3: you Where did you gumbo Johnny come from?
- 40:01Speaker 1: All right, that's a great question.
- 40:02Speaker 5: Great question.
- 40:04Speaker 4: Last question.
- 40:05Speaker 5: Oh my god, he's looking at his clock.
- 40:06Speaker 3: Yes, he's looking at it. Look, how are you talking
- 40:08Speaker 3: about his clock? He's like, it's just more than fifteen minutes?
- 40:11Speaker 3: John oh t baby, get some dummies on the way out.
- 40:16Speaker 2: You'll understand. I gotta get what's coming to me. I'm
- 40:19Speaker 2: sure you girls have heard that before, what murder.
- 40:23Speaker 7: He was a great guy, the best guy around.
- 40:28Speaker 2: So I was on the radio and station manager did
- 40:36Speaker 2: not want me to use my real name because it
- 40:38Speaker 2: was just too hard to remember.
- 40:40Speaker 1: And too hard to say.
- 40:42Speaker 2: So he goes, I love the fact that you're Italian
- 40:44Speaker 2: and your character is Italian. He goes, I'd like to
- 40:48Speaker 2: use an Italian nickname. Do you have any ideas? So
- 40:53Speaker 2: I said, how about Tony Minaro? Goes, Tony Manarow, that's
- 40:57Speaker 2: fantastic Saturday night fever.
- 41:00Speaker 1: He goes, that's great. I love it.
- 41:02Speaker 2: I said, I can't do it. I can't do Tony
- 41:04Speaker 2: Naro because why not? I said, I can't dance, just
- 41:09Speaker 2: in case.
- 41:10Speaker 4: That would have been funny if you.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Want me to go in the club and everybody goes, Tony,
- 41:15Speaker 2: you want to dance with me? And my ankle hurts,
- 41:17Speaker 2: you know what I mean?
- 41:18Speaker 4: I just loved you to watch you dead, and.
- 41:21Speaker 6: If you hit it like you did, they'd be dancing
- 41:23Speaker 6: with you in grocery stores and be like, I.
- 41:25Speaker 4: Can't do that.
- 41:26Speaker 1: I can't. So he goes, okay, okay. So I said, how.
- 41:33Speaker 2: About Johnny Gumbaugh And he looks at me and he goes,
- 41:37Speaker 2: Gumba Johnny Wow. And then he walks down the hallway
- 41:40Speaker 2: and he turns around and he points at me. He goes,
- 41:42Speaker 2: You're gonna be famous. And I had to trademark and
- 41:50Speaker 2: copyright the name. I had to stop people from opening
- 41:53Speaker 2: up pizzerias and restaurants.
- 41:55Speaker 5: That's what you should do.
- 41:56Speaker 4: That's what you should do. I mean, it's hot.
- 42:00Speaker 1: It's a lot of you could rent out your name.
- 42:03Speaker 4: Yeah, with the name, I hadn't.
- 42:06Speaker 2: I had Orfers, I haven't. I haven't acted on any
- 42:08Speaker 2: of them when I've had Orfers for that kind of stuff.
- 42:11Speaker 4: It is a great name.
- 42:12Speaker 1: I love it.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Iconic.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you what was funny, and I'll leave
- 42:15Speaker 1: you at this.
- 42:17Speaker 2: I was on the radio and I forgot what year
- 42:19Speaker 2: it was, and I get a phone call and a
- 42:23Speaker 2: woman she goes.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Johnny, congratulations. I said, congratulations on what you won. You're
- 42:29Speaker 1: the champion. You have the champion.
- 42:31Speaker 2: I said, miss, what are you talking about? Apparently at
- 42:35Speaker 2: the Westminature Dog Show there was a poodle named Gumba
- 42:41Speaker 2: Johnny that won the championship. Some lady named her dog
- 42:44Speaker 2: after me, and she thought it was my thought.
- 42:48Speaker 1: I smissed, I don't even own a dog. What are
- 42:50Speaker 1: you talking about?
- 42:54Speaker 4: I want to know is that she.
- 42:55Speaker 5: Thinks you were Goomba Johnny that owned a dog named That's.
- 42:58Speaker 4: What she thought. Yeah, I love it.
- 43:00Speaker 1: I said, I had no idea.
- 43:03Speaker 4: You see, that's why I had a trademark your name.
- 43:06Speaker 2: I had a trademark, man, well, I did. I did
- 43:08Speaker 2: before that, but many times, you know, I had and
- 43:14Speaker 2: this will be pertinent for your show. I had many
- 43:17Speaker 2: girls come up to me. I named my cat Gumba Johnny.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Which cat, No, that's right, I wouldn't dare say that. Yeah,
- 43:31Speaker 2: I named my cat Gumba Johnny. And that kid called
- 43:33Speaker 2: me up. I named my goldfish Gumba Johnny. I'm like,
- 43:36Speaker 2: don't flush it, kid, you know.
- 43:39Speaker 4: So I love that. That's a great story. And you
- 43:42Speaker 4: know what he was right, he said, You're you're going
- 43:44Speaker 4: to be famous.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it was very prophetic.
- 43:47Speaker 2: And uh, you know, I mean the little fame that
- 43:50Speaker 2: I've been able to accomplish. But you know, I'm I'm
- 43:55Speaker 2: still working and you know, to be to be someone,
- 44:00Speaker 2: you know, to be a little bit relevant. And the
- 44:03Speaker 2: entertainment industry at this age is it.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Is good for me, very satisfying.
- 44:10Speaker 2: You know, a lot of people, you know don't still
- 44:14Speaker 2: get work, and I seem to still get work, you know.
- 44:17Speaker 2: And what I'm trying to say is people aren't sick
- 44:20Speaker 2: of me yet, and you know, and I'm very I
- 44:26Speaker 2: feel very, very blessed for that. And that's it, you know,
- 44:29Speaker 2: I mean, and I'll leave you with this. And this
- 44:31Speaker 2: became a joke as I'm getting older, you know, you
- 44:34Speaker 2: you I had to have a talk with my wife
- 44:38Speaker 2: and I was considerably younger than me about mortality. So
- 44:42Speaker 2: she says, what do you want me to do? I said,
- 44:45Speaker 2: I don't want to wake, no wake. I don't want
- 44:48Speaker 2: anybody networking over my dead body. And I had no selfies.
- 44:54Speaker 2: I had three friends that met their wives at wakes.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Nobody's getting laid.
- 44:58Speaker 4: At my way. This is hilarious.
- 45:01Speaker 1: So she goes, what do you want me to do?
- 45:02Speaker 2: I said, I want a mass and I want to
- 45:04Speaker 2: be cremated. She goes, okay, I said, I want you
- 45:07Speaker 2: to take the ashes and I want you to put
- 45:09Speaker 2: them in the kitchen.
- 45:11Speaker 4: In the kitchen, yeah, She.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Goes, why would I do that? I said, on Sunday,
- 45:14Speaker 2: when you make the chicken cutlets, I want you to
- 45:15Speaker 2: sprinkle a little bit of me on the chicken couplets.
- 45:19Speaker 2: She goes, that's sick. Why would I do that? I said,
- 45:21Speaker 2: I want to give you odgen a one more time.
- 45:24Speaker 4: Don't love that?
- 45:29Speaker 1: So? So she that's the That's what conversations in our
- 45:33Speaker 1: house are.
- 45:34Speaker 4: Like that, And you got to keep that going.
- 45:36Speaker 1: I love she's always going. Is that for your act?
- 45:40Speaker 4: Is that my own self?
- 45:43Speaker 2: Like the other day we were in bed, and she
- 45:45Speaker 2: says to me, if they wrote a book about our marriage,
- 45:50Speaker 2: what would they call it? I said, the woman who
- 45:53Speaker 2: took down Johnny? So I ruined my sex life. I
- 46:01Speaker 2: got to tell you, I'm my own worst you know,
- 46:05Speaker 2: it's very hard to listen to this, to get romantic
- 46:08Speaker 2: after that.
- 46:09Speaker 1: I'm my own worst enemy.
- 46:12Speaker 3: But I make good materials, don't I want to have
- 46:14Speaker 3: good sounds. Tell everybody where they could find you.
- 46:16Speaker 2: Let us know when you're first of all, I'm starving
- 46:18Speaker 2: like a garbage you make. I know your No, I
- 46:21Speaker 2: can't believe that you don't you know, like you don't
- 46:23Speaker 2: have like a six foot wedge.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Out here or some I have.
- 46:26Speaker 4: We have a lot of food in the kitchen.
- 46:27Speaker 1: H it's all crap.
- 46:30Speaker 4: Next time, I'll make sure i'll bring you. I'll bring
- 46:32Speaker 4: you some nice chicken.
- 46:32Speaker 5: Cor We'll sprinkle some stuff on that.
- 46:34Speaker 1: Let's bring some new Tell.
- 46:37Speaker 4: Everybody where they could find you.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Well, when is it?
- 46:40Speaker 4: Probably a week?
- 46:41Speaker 2: A week on July twenty fourth, I'm gonna be at
- 46:46Speaker 2: the Brokerage Club in Belmore Long Island.
- 46:48Speaker 3: I was just there on Saturday with Chris Monty.
- 46:51Speaker 2: We're doing a double headliner show August first. I'm going
- 46:55Speaker 2: to be local finally at UH it's a restaurant show.
- 46:59Speaker 2: It's a dinner show. It's called Pelham on the Rails.
- 47:02Speaker 2: August first. It's a dinner show, like sixty five dollars,
- 47:05Speaker 2: so you get drinks, food and tip and tax included.
- 47:09Speaker 2: And then I come out and I do a show.
- 47:10Speaker 2: You eat dinner and I love doing those things.
- 47:13Speaker 4: That's so much fun.
- 47:14Speaker 2: That's called Pelham on the Rails. And after that, I'm
- 47:18Speaker 2: doing a show with Judy torres On on on August
- 47:22Speaker 2: I think it's August eighth.
- 47:24Speaker 4: Yeah, good friend.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Well, we're doing it on the beach at MJ's in Bayville,
- 47:29Speaker 2: New Jersey. So I'm going to go up and do
- 47:32Speaker 2: some like a half hour Puerto Rican jokes and then
- 47:37Speaker 2: then Judy's going He's going to sing and it's on
- 47:40Speaker 2: the beach. It's fantastic. It's really like kind of like
