- 0:00Speaker 1: Marshal Matt Dillon has been forced to kill Alvin Greb,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and he fears that Alvin's younger brother, Billy, may follow
- 0:07Speaker 1: the same dangerous path. Dillon sets out to deal with
- 0:11Speaker 1: the younger Greb before the situation worsens. This is Gunsmoke,
- 0:16Speaker 1: Greb Hassel, CBS episode 257, first heard on March 10th, 1957.
- 0:24Speaker 1: William Conrad stars as Dylan, with Parley Bear as Chester,
- 0:28Speaker 1: Howard McNair as Doc, and Georgia Ellis as Kitty Russell.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Vic Perrin, Vivi Janis, and Sam Edwards are also heard.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Les Crutchfield wrote the script, and Norman MacDonald produced and directed,
- 0:41Speaker 1: with Rex Corey providing the music. We now take you
- 0:45Speaker 1: back to the original broadcast.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there's
- 1:01Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:04Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:06Speaker 2: gun smoke.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Gun smoke.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Guns Move, starring William Conrad. The story of the violence
- 1:30Speaker 2: that moved west.
- 1:30Speaker 3: With young America. And the story of a man who
- 1:34Speaker 3: moved with it. I'm that man. Matt Dillon, the United
- 1:37Speaker 3: States Marshal. The first man they look for and the
- 1:41Speaker 3: last they want to meet. It's a chancery job. And
- 1:45Speaker 3: it makes a man watchful. And a little lonely.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Guns Move.
- 2:13Speaker 3: The town sure does seem deserted tonight, Mr. Dillon. Yeah,
- 2:16Speaker 3: it's pretty late, Chester. Well, it won't be like this
- 2:19Speaker 3: much longer. End of the month, the toll herd will
- 2:22Speaker 3: start rolling in, and there won't be no peace around
- 2:24Speaker 3: here for a fall. You're a hard man to please.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Well, I ain't complaining. It'd be kindly nice to have
- 2:30Speaker 4: some life and excitement.
- 2:32Speaker 3: How are you, Marshal? You remember me? Yeah, sure, I
- 2:42Speaker 3: remember you, Elvin. Now, you've grown some.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Sure.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I've had two years to do it, eh?
- 2:49Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Put on any sense, have you, along with the weight?
- 2:54Speaker 3: Enough so I'm still not in jail.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I gave you a year, didn't I? Said you'd either
- 2:59Speaker 3: be jailed or hung by then.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I sure hate to disappoint you, Marshal.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Chester, you remember Elvin Grab, don't you? Yes, sir, I do.
- 3:09Speaker 3: And I still got no use for him. You men
- 3:11Speaker 3: sure ain't very friendly. What are your plans, Owen? Nothing much.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Just got a hankering to see the old hometown. Your
- 3:19Speaker 3: Ma and Billy are getting along fine without you. Why
- 3:23Speaker 3: don't you leave them alone? I figured they might need
- 3:25Speaker 3: some help, maybe. You didn't figure it when you lived here.
- 3:28Speaker 3: And you haven't worried about them for the last two years.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Now, Ma.
- 3:31Speaker 3: You shut up and listen to me. Two years ago,
- 3:34Speaker 3: after I let you get away with everything but murder
- 3:36Speaker 3: just for your mother's sake, I finally ran you out
- 3:38Speaker 3: of town, and I told you not to come back. Yeah,
- 3:41Speaker 3: I remember. All right. You are back. By this time,
- 3:45Speaker 3: you don't get any second chances. You make one wrong
- 3:48Speaker 3: move and I'm on you, Elvin. A man can change, Marshal.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Some can and some can't. I'm just telling you how
- 3:54Speaker 3: you stand and dodge. Don't look down there.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Marshal.
- 3:58Speaker 4: A couple of girls riding out behind the bank there.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Look, Marshal. That's why you've been so talkative, huh? You're
- 4:04Speaker 3: their lookout.
- 4:05Speaker 5: Lookout?
- 4:06Speaker 3: Now, Marshal, I'll throw you in the river. Hey, Greb,
- 4:08Speaker 3: come back here. You're under arrest. Not yet, Marshal. Now,
- 4:12Speaker 3: while I've got a gun in my holster... Don't be.
- 4:14Speaker 4: A fool, Greb.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Albie's dead, Chester. We gonna go after him, Mr.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Dillon?
- 4:32Speaker 3: No, it's too dark now. We couldn't track him tonight.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Matt!
- 4:35Speaker 3: Is that you, Matt? Yeah, over here, Doc.
- 4:42Speaker 4: What happened, Matt?
- 4:43Speaker 3: Take over it with you, Doc.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Sure.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Let's see. What? Why, it's young Elvin Graham.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:54Speaker 3: I didn't even know he was.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Around this part of the country.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Well, he's come home now, Doc. Just stay.
- 5:21Speaker 4: This doggone land is just plain bone star, Mr. Dillon.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Pretty poor ground, all right.
- 5:25Speaker 4: I don't see how nobody could make a living off
- 5:28Speaker 4: in a homestead like this.
- 5:29Speaker 3: That'd take some scratching, I guess, especially with just her
- 5:32Speaker 3: and Billy to do the work.
- 5:34Speaker 4: You're saying there's trouble with the crowd?
- 5:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Bet she's already had it. Seems like to me we
- 5:41Speaker 4: could have took.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Time for some breakfast while we rode way out of here.
- 5:44Speaker 3: And I wanted to tell her before somebody else did.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Hey!
- 5:46Speaker 4: Get in the seat!
- 5:48Speaker 3: Get on there! Let's give her a hand. Those calves
- 5:51Speaker 3: are getting away from her.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Circle those over there by the barn and I'll pick
- 5:55Speaker 5: up these along the fence here. All right, that's good enough, Chester.
- 6:14Speaker 4: The rest of them will follow.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Can you get the gate closed? Yes, I do. There's
- 6:25Speaker 4: dogs and chairs.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Enough to drive a body clean out of the mine.
- 6:29Speaker 4: There. Much obliged to you, Marshal.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Chester. That's no problem, ma'am.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Well, come on up to the house, Marshal. I'll get
- 6:38Speaker 4: on a pot of coffee. Oh, thank you.
- 6:40Speaker 3: All right. Why didn't you get Billy out here to
- 6:43Speaker 3: give you a hand? Billy?
- 6:45Speaker 4: And he ain't the reason you're here?
- 6:48Speaker 3: Why should he be?
- 6:50Speaker 5: I'm worried sick, Marshal.
- 6:52Speaker 4: He acted real funny all day yesterday. Then this morning
- 6:55Speaker 4: he sat it up and took off for dawn.
- 6:58Speaker 3: I heard him right out of the yard first I
- 7:00Speaker 3: knowed of it.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I see.
- 7:02Speaker 4: I don't know where he went, what he's up to.
- 7:05Speaker 4: He acted mighty strange like last night.
- 7:07Speaker 3: He wouldn't look me in the eye.
- 7:09Speaker 4: That ain't like him, Marshal.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Billy ain't like Elvin.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Pray to Lord he don't never get like him. Elvin
- 7:16Speaker 3: came back yesterday, Miss Greb.
- 7:18Speaker 4: What?
- 7:19Speaker 3: He was around town last night.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Then Billy seen him. That's why he was acting the
- 7:25Speaker 4: way he was.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe.
- 7:27Speaker 4: I hoped he'd never come back. Even if he is
- 7:30Speaker 4: my own son.
- 7:32Speaker 3: He'll work on Billy now.
- 7:33Speaker 4: He'll get him started down the same road he's on.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Miss Greb. Elvin's dead.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Dead?
- 7:43Speaker 3: Yes, and he and two other men broke into the
- 7:45Speaker 3: cattleman's bank last night. When I started to arrest him,
- 7:50Speaker 3: he drew and fired at me. Did he?
- 7:56Speaker 1: Elvin.
- 7:59Speaker 4: I think I'd better sit down.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Here, ma'am, sit on this chair.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Now, I remember the winter he was for, and he
- 8:09Speaker 1: caught the pox.
- 8:11Speaker 4: I took care of him night and day for a
- 8:13Speaker 4: whole week. Thinking any hour we was going to lose him.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Might have been better if we had.
- 8:21Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Miss Grip.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Oh, I know for three, four years it was going
- 8:25Speaker 4: to end this way, Marshal.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I don't know. We should have been some way to
- 8:30Speaker 3: avoid it.
- 8:32Speaker 4: What did I do wrong, Marshal, back along the years?
- 8:34Speaker 4: Some place that made him turn bad?
- 8:36Speaker 3: A person never knows, I guess, ma'am. They just do
- 8:42Speaker 3: the best they can. I gotta know.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I got Billy to think of.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Do you think he knew, Miss Gregg, about Elvin being killed?
- 8:52Speaker 4: Not when he left this morning. He couldn't have. He
- 8:54Speaker 4: was home all night. Nobody's been here.
- 8:56Speaker 3: He was probably meeting the three of them somewhere. A hideout, maybe.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I reckon.
- 9:03Speaker 3: There's a ham mission.
- 9:04Speaker 4: And some other vittles.
- 9:07Speaker 3: What can I do, Marshal? Then it just can't go bad. Well,
- 9:14Speaker 3: Lee Sullivan won't be a wrong influence on him. Not now, anyway.
- 9:20Speaker 4: You really think that, Marshal?
- 9:21Speaker 3: I ain't so sure.
- 9:42Speaker 5: Must be a terrible feeling, Max.
- 9:44Speaker 3: What are you talking about, Kitty?
- 9:45Speaker 4: Those two men who got away last night.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Not knowing who they are or where they are. The
- 9:51Speaker 3: poor one, they'll step out from behind a building and
- 9:54Speaker 3: try to shoot you in the back.
- 9:56Speaker 4: They don't have much reason to do that.
- 9:59Speaker 3: You killed Elvin Gregg. He was in with them. Revenge
- 10:03Speaker 3: is a reason.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Yeah, it is sometimes.
- 10:05Speaker 3: I just hope maybe they left the country. I doubt
- 10:08Speaker 3: if they have, Kitty. I think they're holed up somewhere
- 10:11Speaker 3: around Dodge.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Matt, I don't see how you can be so calm
- 10:15Speaker 4: about it.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I'm not calm, Kitty. Not till I find Billy Grip.
- 10:20Speaker 3: If you find him, you'll find them all. I hope so.
- 10:24Speaker 3: But you know he's joined.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Up with them.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Yeah, you're probably right.
- 10:31Speaker 3: What's the matter, Jessica? Billy Grip.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Did he come in here just now?
- 10:36Speaker 3: No, I... I had a score. I'd just seen him
- 10:39Speaker 3: on the seat. Some kid that sure looked like him.
- 10:41Speaker 4: And he's heading right in.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Behind you.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Evening, Billy. You're a rocking killer.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Your brother chose Billy, I didn't. You know what he
- 11:02Speaker 3: was up against. Now you better put that gun away.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Sure I will.
- 11:09Speaker 4: After I've gifted it in you.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Oh. Billy, I'll give a kid more chances than I
- 11:18Speaker 3: would a man, but not enough to get myself killed.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Now you hand over that gun. Stay back, Marshal.
- 11:23Speaker 4: I ain't fooling.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Did the gang give you the gun? Did they send
- 11:27Speaker 3: you in to do their dirty work for them? Stop.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Don't come any closer.
- 11:31Speaker 3: I'm not putting up with any more foolishness, Billy. Now,
- 11:34Speaker 3: you give me that gun before I throw you over
- 11:35Speaker 3: my knee and take the flat of my hand to you.
- 11:38Speaker 4: No.
- 11:38Speaker 3: I said hand that over.
- 11:39Speaker 4: No. No. No. Thanks. I'll kill you. Sorry, I'll kill you.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Chester. Yes, sir. Take him over and lock him up.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Richard, come on now, Billy.
- 11:57Speaker 1: You're killing me.
- 12:00Speaker 3: You took a big chance, Matt. A kid like that's
- 12:03Speaker 3: worse than a gunfighter. Yeah, I know, Kitty. But I
- 12:07Speaker 3: can't keep him alive.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Bye, Gene, Mr. Jones. I wouldn't mind being in jail myself,
- 12:28Speaker 4: getting vittles like this, Gene.
- 12:30Speaker 3: There's some who wouldn't agree with you, Chester. Getting them
- 12:33Speaker 3: fetched to you? It's just like a fancy hotel. Here's
- 12:38Speaker 3: your breakfast, Willie. I don't want none. Maybe you'll change
- 12:42Speaker 3: your mind. Take it inside, Chester.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Yes, sir. It's the same type of breakfast I had
- 12:48Speaker 4: this morning.
- 12:49Speaker 3: I told you I don't want it.
- 12:51Speaker 4: All right, then.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Leave it. Let them eggs and saltboard go to wasting.
- 12:57Speaker 3: We can just eat cold mush tomorrow morning.
- 12:59Speaker 4: I want out of here, Marshal.
- 13:02Speaker 3: You ain't got nothing to hold me for. Judge Bent
- 13:04Speaker 3: says different. He's going to set bail this afternoon or tomorrow.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Tomorrow will pay it. Yeah? Then you'll probably let her.
- 13:13Speaker 3: You really hate her, don't you, Billy?
- 13:15Speaker 4: Hate her? You crazy?
- 13:17Speaker 3: If you don't hate her, why are you doing the
- 13:19Speaker 3: same thing to her that your brother did? You shut up!
- 13:23Speaker 4: I just don't understand. Elvin was big. He took anything
- 13:27Speaker 4: he wanted and didn't ask nobody.
- 13:28Speaker 3: He's not big now, Billy. No bigger than the rest
- 13:31Speaker 3: of them out there on Boot Hill.
- 13:34Speaker 4: You're gonna pay for that, Marshal.
- 13:36Speaker 2: If they don't get you, I will.
- 13:38Speaker 4: They?
- 13:40Speaker 3: Who's they, Billy? You'd like to know, wouldn't you? They're
- 13:45Speaker 3: a pair of sneaking, thieving rats, the same as Elvin was.
- 13:48Speaker 3: You don't owe them anything. Now, where are they?
- 13:52Speaker 5: Matt!
- 13:54Speaker 4: You were there? Oh, yeah.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I'll be right out, Doc. You better think it over, Billy.
- 14:01Speaker 3: You think it over, Marshal.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Maybe you won't call them rats when we're on a
- 14:04Speaker 4: gun trip or killing my horse.
- 14:07Speaker 3: He's pretty head up, ain't he?
- 14:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Come on in, Doc. Oh, Matt, you still got the
- 14:13Speaker 3: grub boy here? We just took him his breakfast.
- 14:15Speaker 4: Oh, good.
- 14:16Speaker 3: I figured maybe you'd want to know about his ma.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Know what about her? It was that herd of yearling
- 14:22Speaker 3: calves she's got out there. Seems that she was trying
- 14:24Speaker 3: to work them by herself, and they knocked her down
- 14:27Speaker 3: and trampled her. But she hurt bad. Well, she'd be
- 14:29Speaker 3: laid up in bed a week or so. She looks
- 14:32Speaker 3: worse off than she is.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Well, you'd think the Indians had.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Caught her maybe and beat her to a pulp. And
- 14:38Speaker 3: my trouble never comes single once it starts. Wait a minute, Doc.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Wait a minute.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Huh?
- 14:43Speaker 3: Wait a minute. Yeah, it might work. If she'll go
- 14:49Speaker 3: along with it, it just might work. We'll leave the
- 15:11Speaker 3: horses here. All right. Come on, Bella, let's go in
- 15:14Speaker 3: and see her.
- 15:15Speaker 4: All right.
- 15:16Speaker 3: What happened to her?
- 15:18Speaker 4: Why won't you tell me what happened to her?
- 15:20Speaker 3: I guess she wants to tell you herself.
- 15:22Speaker 4: Ma? Ma, where are you? In here, Billy.
- 15:28Speaker 3: All right, go on. Ma, you all right?
- 15:34Speaker 1: I'm so busy.
- 15:36Speaker 3: At least I guess I will be. Doc says I will, but.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Billy, why they got handcuffs on you?
- 15:44Speaker 1: It ain't nothing, Ma.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Marshall said he knowed where you was, and he bet.
- 15:47Speaker 3: You, but.
- 15:49Speaker 4: What's he done, Marshall?
- 15:50Speaker 3: Well, he just lost his head a little, ma'am. I
- 15:53Speaker 3: might have been willing to forget that part, but... Well,
- 15:56Speaker 3: he's dead set on protecting a couple of bank robbers.
- 15:59Speaker 3: And I figured a jail cell might change his mind
- 16:02Speaker 3: for him.
- 16:03Speaker 4: Them two that was with Elvin, them two that was...
- 16:06Speaker 4: His partners, friends, that's who you're protecting.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Now, Ma.
- 16:09Speaker 4: You're a sneaking coward. Just as low and mean and
- 16:13Speaker 4: worthless as Elvin had got to be. He's dead, Ma.
- 16:16Speaker 3: You got no call to talk about him like that.
- 16:18Speaker 4: Dead, yes. Better off dead. I'm his own Ma, Sam.
- 16:24Speaker 4: You ought to have been here this morning, Billy. Shake
- 16:27Speaker 4: hands with your friends. Maybe you could have helped him.
- 16:30Speaker 3: What you talking about?
- 16:30Speaker 4: Look at me. How do you think this happened?
- 16:36Speaker 3: They wouldn't do that. They're your friends. Yours and Elvin's.
- 16:40Speaker 4: All I've seen was the handkerchiefs over their faces. They
- 16:44Speaker 4: said Elvin had told them I was keeping money for them.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Money they'd stole somewhere. Well, they didn't. They couldn't have
- 16:51Speaker 4: dragged me out in the yard, did they? Used their boots,
- 16:54Speaker 4: a chunk of stove wood.
- 16:58Speaker 2: I'll kill them.
- 17:00Speaker 4: So help me, I'll kill them both.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Why them?
- 17:03Speaker 4: They're the same kind as Elvin. They were his friends. Well,
- 17:07Speaker 4: they ain't my friends. Marshal, their names is Chuck Speller
- 17:12Speaker 4: and Curly Tolman.
- 17:14Speaker 2: They're at that old abandoned sod house west of Branchport Crossing,
- 17:17Speaker 2: just above the ridge.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I know where it is, Billy. All right, take
- 17:20Speaker 3: the handcuffs off, Chester.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 17:26Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Marshal. I get pretty crazy. Well, I'll do
- 17:30Speaker 3: it once in a while, Billy. Elvin must have been
- 17:33Speaker 3: the same kind that he wouldn't have run with him.
- 17:37Speaker 3: I guess he wasn't so big at all. No, Billy,
- 17:40Speaker 3: not very big, I'm afraid.
- 17:42Speaker 4: Billy, would you mind fixing me a cup of tea? Sure, Ma.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Right away. Now, you just lay back there and rest.
- 17:50Speaker 4: You're going to be well in no time.
- 17:54Speaker 3: I lied to him, Marshal. It was a white lie, though,
- 17:59Speaker 3: wasn't it?
- 18:02Speaker 2: Yes, ma'am.
- 18:02Speaker 3: About as white as they come, Miss Graham. Well, Chester,
- 18:10Speaker 3: I guess we'd better go bring him in. Come on. Gunsmoke.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Produced and directed by Norman McDonald. Stars William Conrad as
- 19:15Speaker 2: Matt Dillon, U.S.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Marshal.
