- 0:00You know, one of the hardest parts about living with
- 0:01Parkinson's are the symptoms that nobody warns you about.

- 0:08teenage acne and a snow globe. Or you choke on a sip of water
- 0:12like you've forgotten how to swallow.

- 0:18bathrooms. And that's what today's episode
- 0:21is all about, the hidden side of Parkinson's that doesn't get
- 0:24enough attention. We're going to talk about skin
- 0:27issues, swallowing problems, and urinary urgency.
- 0:31And stick with me all the way because not only will I give you
- 0:35a practical tip for each and every one of those, but by the
- 0:38end, you're going to hear Carmen's care partner corner.
- 0:40And let me tell you, her perspective is gold.
- 0:42And plus, of course, I'll I'll reveal today's Bryce ISM that
- 0:47you won't forget the next time you get stuck in a bathroom
- 0:50line. Welcome to Living with
- 0:52Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad, and the Reality.
- 0:56Real talk, real life, real community with Bryce Perry.
- 1:01Let's begin. Hey everyone, Bryce here.
- 1:05Welcome back to Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the bad,
- 1:08and the Reality. Now before we dive in, here's a

- 1:37So, and for those of you that are newly diagnosed and
- 1:40thinking, well, now what I've got you, I've got a brand new
- 1:44six week boot camp course. It's open to reserve your spot
- 1:48right now. Just drop your name and your
- 1:50e-mail using the link below in the description.
- 1:52I'm telling you, I will answer everything.
- 1:54It's going to be you and I it's interactive.
- 1:56It's 6, a six week program, six week program.
- 2:00When you get out of there, you're not going to feel alone
- 2:02and you're going to have the tools that you need.
- 2:05They're the things that I wish I had when I first got diagnosed.
- 2:08But today, let's get into these hidden symptoms.
- 2:12Now let's kick it off with something I never thought I'd be
- 2:15talking about on a podcast. My skin.
- 2:17Yep, Parkinson's skin is a real thing now.
- 2:20For me, it showed up like this. Constant shine on my forehead.
- 2:24Can you see it? And no amount of washing will
- 2:26fix it. I used to joke with Carmen.
- 2:28You don't forget expensive lighting.
- 2:30Just shine the camera on my forehead and we're all good.
- 2:33She rolls her eyes, but it bugs me.
- 2:36And what can you actually do about it?
- 2:39Well, if you're having some skin issues, you need to see a
- 2:41dermatologist. You know, they've seen it all
- 2:44and they can prescribe medic medicated shampoos or creams
- 2:47that will calm it all down. And let's be honest, not
- 2:50everyone runs to a dermatologist right away.
- 2:53So here's another thing you can do while you're waiting.
- 2:55Don't over wash your face. The instinct is, oh, my skin's
- 2:59oily. I better scrub it twice a day.
- 3:02But that actually doesn't make that actually makes it worse.
- 3:05And if you're looking for a cheap trick, I always like, I
- 3:08like cheap tricks. That's it works really good.
- 3:11Try dandruff shampoo. Weird, I know, but gently using
- 3:14it on your face a couple of times a week can really help
- 3:17settle the oiliness and the flakes.
- 3:21And to finish it off, moisturize smart.
- 3:23Come on guys, go gentle fragrance free stuff that's
- 3:26smooth instead of stinging. OK, now if you're dealt with
- 3:30Parkinson's glow, give me a hell yeah in the comments so people
- 3:35know that they're not the only ones dealing with it.
- 3:37And I know I'm not the only ones dealing with it.
- 3:40That's a hell yeah for Parkinson's skin.
- 3:42Oily or flaky? Now while your skin might be
- 3:45screaming, look at me. Another hidden symptom makes you
- 3:48want to disappear completely, and that's swallowing problems.
- 3:53Now, I'll never forget the first time I was just drinking water
- 3:57and it went straight down the wrong way.
- 3:59I coughed. They hacked so bad that Carmen
- 4:01thought she'd have to call 911. And you know, I was fine
- 4:04eventually, but it rattled me. So, you know, I've done that
- 4:09before and I'm sure you have as well.
- 4:11And you know when it you always say it went down the wrong way?
- 4:14Well, what is actually happening when when it goes down the wrong
- 4:17way is you've actually tried to take a breath at that same time,
- 4:20you, you took a sip of whatever you're slipping.
- 4:23And this is a bit different. And this one, it's not just
- 4:27embarrassing, you know, if you don't deal with it, it can lead
- 4:30to weight loss, dehydration, and even pneumonia.
- 4:35So what can you do? First, talk to your doctor
- 4:37early. Don't brush it off as just
- 4:40choking on water. Ask for a swallowing assessment.
- 4:43There's such a thing. And once you've had that
- 4:46conversation, the next step is usually this speech therapist.
- 4:50Honestly, they're amazing. They'll give you exercises and
- 4:53tricks to keep you safe. But even before therapy, you can
- 4:57start doing this right away. Slow down.
- 5:01Smaller bites and smaller sips really make a big difference.
- 5:05And another easy change is posture.
- 5:09Sit up straight when you eat or drink if it seems simple, but it
- 5:13makes a really big difference in where that food or drink goes.
- 5:16And finally, for those tougher cases, try thicker liquids.
- 5:20Nobody ever asked for a chunky water, but it's keeps you safe
- 5:24and it's worth it. Like a tomato juice.
- 5:28Not many people choke over that. And if and if you've ever had a
- 5:31a choking scare with Parkinson's, drop a Me Too in
- 5:34the comments and let's make it normal to talk about this.
- 5:38And if you want to go deeper into how to manage symptoms like
- 5:41this, that's exactly the kind of stuff that we talked about in
- 5:44the inner circle. Remember 3 free days this week.
- 5:48If you want to check it out, the link is in the description
- 5:51below. It's a brand new link, so don't
- 5:52click on an old one. This is brand new for a brand
- 5:55new community. We'd love to see you over there.
- 5:57So we've gone from skin that makes you shine to swallowing
- 6:00that makes you choke. Now let's talk about another joy
- 6:04of Parkinson's. The bladder issues.
- 6:07Oh boy, this one hits close to home.
- 6:09Urinary urgency. Basically, when you got to go,
- 6:12you better go. I've joked that I could, that I
- 6:16could publish a Winnipeg bathroom survival guide.
- 6:19From coffee shops to malls, I know them all.
- 6:23So what helps? OK, cut down on caffeine and
- 6:27alcohol. I know not anyone wants to hear
- 6:30that, but trust me, they make urgency worse.
- 6:33And for me, that coffee, that's a hard one for me to cut down
- 6:37on. But if I'm going for a ride or
- 6:38going outside or going to do something outside of my home,
- 6:42I'm telling you, I better make sure I don't drink as much
- 6:45coffee as normal. And you know, once you start
- 6:47there, there, there's the next smart move is this.
- 6:50Stay hydrated, but do it smartly.
- 6:52Don't cut out water because your body needs it.
- 6:55Just spread it out through the day so you're not so you're not
- 6:59desperate in the middle of errands or up all night.
- 7:02And if that's not enough, here's the next step.
- 7:06Talk to your doctor. Here we go again, Bryce.
- 7:09There are medications that can calm the bladder and give you
- 7:12back a little control. And while you're at it, don't
- 7:17overlook this one. Pelvic floor exercises and yes
- 7:21guys, even us strengthening those muscles actually make a
- 7:24difference, and they can make a difference in other areas as
- 7:28well, if you catch my drift. And finally, the practical
- 7:32everyday tip. Plan ahead.
- 7:34Know where the bathrooms are, but don't let that stop you from
- 7:37living your life now. If you've ever done the bathroom
- 7:42dash type run forest run in the comments and so we can know that
- 7:46we're not alone. And a quick reminder, if you're
- 7:49newly diagnosed and wondering what's next, don't forget you
- 7:51can reserve your spot right now. I'm going to leave 2, what are
- 7:55they called? Quadrants or two, two spots, 22,
- 7:59I don't know, 2 segments, two courses.
- 8:05Anyway, they're six weeks long and I'm going to do 2 in a row,
- 8:08so there's 25 per class. The 1st 50 people that can go
- 8:11over there right now. Click that link, reserve your
- 8:13spot, and you know what? You know what I'm going to do?
- 8:16I'm going to throw in six months in the inner circle along with
- 8:20your discounted class. Anyway, check it out in the link
- 8:23and do it quick first. 50 people and it's game over for now.
- 8:28So now you've heard my side of these hidden symptoms, but what
- 8:32about the person who's walking this road beside me?
- 8:34Guess what time it is? It's right.
- 8:36It's time for Carmen's care partner Corner.
- 8:41OK, this is what Carmen gave for me to read to you.
- 8:45When Bryce first started choking on water, I panicked.
- 8:47I didn't know if I should call 911 or just hit him on the back.
- 8:51Living as a care partner means always adjusting, carrying
- 8:54napkins for the skin issues, being patient when meals take
- 8:57longer, or knowing where every bathroom is on a trip.
- 9:02My tip for other partners, don't brush these things off.
- 9:07Ask questions and encourage your partner to bring it up with the
- 9:10doctor. And most of all, laugh about it
- 9:13together because humor has saved us more than once.
- 9:17And I reiterate, bring it up with your doctor and if he
- 9:20doesn't or she doesn't, then you will.
- 9:24Wow. He always has to end with like
- 9:26tough thing, you know? Anyway, and that's why I love
- 9:29Carmen's partner corner. It's so important.
- 9:31She's the one who sees the day-to-day impact and reminds me
- 9:35that these hidden symptoms affect us both.
- 9:38It's not just about us, it's about them too.
- 9:41So there you have it, 3 hidden symptoms of Parkinson's that
- 9:45doctors don't always prepare you for.
- 9:47Skin changes, swallowing struggles, and urinary urgency.
- 9:52Now your turn. Which of these have you
- 9:55experienced? Let me know in the comments.
- 9:57Your story could help someone else feel less alone.
- 10:00And if you haven't experienced any of these at all, just go
- 10:04Like O for three, just O for three.
- 10:07And we can all be jealous of you.
- 10:09OK, you made it. Here it is.
- 10:11Today's price isn't for you. With Parkinson's, sometimes the
- 10:14symptoms you don't see are the ones that trip you up the most.
- 10:18And occasionally they'll chase you straight to the bathroom.
- 10:25All right, I like that one. Don't forget, Inner Circle is
- 10:28open right now. It's a brand new platform.
- 10:30It is 24/7 community and there's a three day free trial this week
- 10:34only. Come on, check it out, meet the
- 10:37community and see if it's the right fit for you.
- 10:39And if you're newly diagnosed again, remember, reserve your
- 10:41spot today. There's only 50.
- 10:43There's only 50. The link's in the description.
- 10:46Reserve it today. Let's do this.
- 10:47I'm going to take you through boot camp and we're going to
- 10:49learn and you're going to learn and you're not going to feel
- 10:51alone anymore. I love this community, I really
- 10:56do. This is the best thing that
- 10:58Parkinson's has ever given me. So until next time, I want you
- 11:02to keep showing up. I want you to keep being real
- 11:06and keep doing life today. Parkinson's may be part of your
- 11:15life, but it doesn't get to define it.
