- 0:00Fresh podcast here. I know we missed a few weeks
- 0:04right after saying we were going to try to not miss week, so that
- 0:07was a little unfortunate, but we're going to try to get better
- 0:11with the podcast consistency this year.
- 0:13We got some ideas to get some backup episodes and things in
- 0:16the talk, so hopefully they'll be coming out every week.

- 0:31And yeah, we got a lot to talk about.
- 0:33We just came back from a three-week hunt that kind of was
- 0:37in two separate locations, so about 10 days in each.
- 0:43Yeah. And it was it was a good time,
- 0:45challenging as always. Luckily we had our great
- 0:49Badlands gear to be comfy and quiet and tough and waterproof
- 0:53and have a great warranty and you can save 20% Badlands
- 0:57gear.com with code team BB on all Badlands gear.
- 1:01So got the sponsor out of the way.
- 1:05Tell me about the hunt and how it went.
- 1:09Oh well you know love the first area, hate the second one.
- 1:15I will never return there. First one was great.
- 1:19You know, we chose that route because Teddy had two tags while
- 1:25we had one, and so our second place where we held A tag, Teddy
- 1:34did not. So figured, you know, might as
- 1:37well try to knock his out while we're there.
- 1:38At the beginning, everyone can deer hunt.
- 1:41And that was, you know, it took I think what a few 3 or 4 days
- 1:46before we actually saw the first group of Javelina there.
- 1:52I don't remember, maybe a few days.
- 1:53Yeah, and then we were seeing them.
- 1:57I do you know that I did not in 20 days glass a single javelina.
- 2:03Yeah, that's wild. I glassed quite a few, but it
- 2:07was, yeah, they were a lot more plentiful in the first unit.
- 2:10So for sure they we basically they're the state we were in has
- 2:14hunt quotas. So the second unit we were
- 2:17hunting, you could not deer hunt.
- 2:19And only Brianna, myself, Matt and Scott, who unfortunately
- 2:23couldn't come on the trip, had javelina tags in that unit.
- 2:26Tov had one in a unit where the deer quota was open and he had A
- 2:30tag. And yeah, a lot more javelina in
- 2:33that unit. Lot of deer in both I would say.
- 2:37I think overall we probably saw a slightly better caliber of
- 2:43bucks in the second unit, although the best, biggest buck
- 2:47we saw was in the first unit. But after that there was a
- 2:49pretty, pretty good drop off to the rest of the bucks we're
- 2:52seeing. But it was just a rough year for
- 2:54antler growth. Think it was pretty dry and it
- 2:59was definitely reflected. I didn't see a single deer I
- 3:01even thought about stalking, which I normally I'll see 1, so
- 3:05I didn't then. I guess we'll get to that.
- 3:08Like I did a lot of stocks on deer with the camera that
- 3:13probably did 12, I bet 12 to 15, but I did not do a single one
- 3:17with the bow so. Yeah, I got to feel bad this
- 3:20year about, you know, like you not getting to go on as many
- 3:23just because like you are. I wouldn't call it picky or
- 3:26you've just shot enough in your life that like you're there's no
- 3:29interest in going after a, you know, great if you weren't a
- 3:34slightly you're starting to become more and more intrigued
- 3:36and and for Kasaurus. He was a very nice bucket and
- 3:42yeah, super nice buck. But you had developed a bit of a
- 3:45history with them and Tov and I got close one time randomly too.
- 3:49So it was fun kind of being around that that buck a lot.
- 3:53And something important to remember is that it's a split
- 3:55season tag. So that's part of the reason
- 3:57January is the very first portion that you can hunt the
- 4:00tag and then there's portions two other seasons later in the
- 4:04year, so. It's a strange thing because you
- 4:05buy for archery, you buy your tag.
- 4:10If you're lucky enough to get it in time in whatever it is like
- 4:14November or something for the season to start up in January.
- 4:23But the quotas do not renew at at the same time, which I think
- 4:30they do because of the the rut season and to minimize, you
- 4:33know, degradation of the deer population.
- 4:39But so you go out January 1st when your tag opens, but units
- 4:44just can start closing left and right that are on their last,
- 4:49you know, it's their last hoorah before August when the quote is
- 4:54renew. So it's kind of interesting
- 4:57because in a sense you're like, it's the beginning of your year
- 5:02with that tag, but it's the end of the quota season.
- 5:07So you're you're kind of like where maybe there are nicer
- 5:15quality of bucks. A lot of those units are already
- 5:17closed, the more you can even get there.
- 5:20Actually, a lot of the units with the biggest deer don't ever
- 5:22close, but they're much tougher to hunt.
- 5:24They're like, you know, desert type stuff.
- 5:26Oh yeah, we never. Well, you have.
- 5:28I'm sure in the past I have never been like a true desert
- 5:32unit. Yeah, you have.
- 5:33I think you just don't know what the desert is.
- 5:35I. Wouldn't call those mountainy
- 5:37ones desert. They are desert first.
- 5:39Desert. I would be like rolling sand.
- 5:41They're. Called High Desert, High Desert
- 5:43is what they're. Called.
- 5:43That's high desert. I want low desert.
- 5:46I don't think you know what you're talking.
- 5:47About I want low desert, you know, like the Sahara.
- 5:50OK, I have haunted that one time.
- 5:53Yeah, sure. Like I don't think I would enjoy
- 5:55it though. I just applied for Elks.
- 5:57I was exciting, applied for elk and pronghorn and then I'm going
- 6:00to be applying in March for more states I want to.
- 6:03Offer a bit of a subject change and we hadn't finished
- 6:05discussing all the hunts yet. I.
- 6:07Was just thinking about hunting, but yeah, the hunt was good.
- 6:11We got some really, really good deer stocks and some phenomenal
- 6:15footage. I mean, I was talking to a buddy
- 6:18about it the other day and I think once I do the hunt video,
- 6:22like probably maybe 2 videos from it, 2-3 videos, I want to
- 6:28release the raw clip, no editing of us having two different buck
- 6:35shots back-to-back. And I never, I never hit stop on
- 6:38record. So it's the most epic, like
- 6:41whatever, 3 minutes of footage like you'll ever see.
- 6:44So I think at some point I'm just going to put up a raw clip
- 6:48of the whole thing and let people watch it with no cuts
- 6:52because it was so crazy, you know?
- 6:56Yeah. Well how do you think about
- 6:58that? Getting two shots on deer Frick
- 7:00and back-to-back was insane. Yeah.
- 7:03So because we missed the 1st. One we knew for sure.
- 7:06I mean, it was maybe 22 yards when we kind of rechecked
- 7:11afterwards, but when I knew as soon as you pointed, turned me
- 7:16and pointed out where he was about to be, that there was next
- 7:21to no shot in hell. Well, there was a window, but.
- 7:24You was Yeah. And he did.
- 7:26He was not in his butt, was in the window.
- 7:28Like if I wanted to be AAD word. Never do that.
- 7:32Yeah. Did you think about shimmying at
- 7:35all? Maybe moving right or left a
- 7:37little. No, no, granted, he was.
- 7:40So again, hindsight's always 2020 and sometimes that never
- 7:44works out. You know, they bolt when you
- 7:46move. But he was.
- 7:47So he was alert in a sense. But it was only because of how
- 7:52and when you see the footage you'll understand like how
- 7:55rutting that buck was that I think maybe I could have
- 8:01shimmied and he would not have. He looked like when you watched
- 8:04the clip, like you said, like I didn't.
- 8:06I noticed he squatted, like actually squatted when he
- 8:11stopped and looked at us. But it wasn't until afterwards
- 8:15that I registered that he was literally squatting to take a
- 8:18peek. Well, and to rub his glands
- 8:20together. Yeah.
- 8:21And so I think I could have gotten away with a shimmy.
- 8:26Well, it's hard. I mean you, you know, even
- 8:28though you have shot a few things on the ground level now
- 8:31in your archery career, still not a ton.
- 8:34So you're still learning how fast stuff can change and move
- 8:38and. Happen and how fast when you're.
- 8:39Ground. Move not just not just how the
- 8:42scenario can move quickly, but how you have to like
- 8:48instantaneously be able to read the animal and what it's doing
- 8:54and its body movements and how alert it is.
- 8:57But in like I just had in different ways and it takes a
- 9:04lot to get, I mean like instantaneous at that, fast at
- 9:09that. And so there's like almost
- 9:12always a hindsight 2020 should have could have done this.
- 9:16But nonetheless, the clip is crazy because you just watch
- 9:21that branch get cut in half. And if you put that thing in
- 9:25slow mode, though, I think it'll probably be a little grainy.
- 9:28You see my air go. Off to the.
- 9:32Moon. Well so you had like 1 stock and
- 9:37then if your arrow had hit left or right it would have gone
- 9:41right through. Perfect.
- 9:42But unfortunately you did the one thing that you couldn't and
- 9:46it was teed up the freaking thing.
- 9:47Perfect, which is? The Pucker.
- 9:51Which in a way is good because you didn't harm the deer.
- 9:53Your arrow went way to the moon. But I mean, yeah, it was it was
- 9:58one of those shots where it wasn't like you're shooting
- 10:00through a thick, dense Bush. It was like 1 stalk and then
- 10:03pretty open. And you just needed luck on your
- 10:05side to miss one way or the other.
- 10:07And you, you unfortunately teed up the branch.
- 10:09Perfect. But so then the buck darts off,
- 10:11right? Yep.
- 10:12And then we turn and the other one is still on a string coming
- 10:17right to us. Yeah.
- 10:18And he already, what's crazy is like he already was not
- 10:23necessarily on a string because my assumption as we watched him
- 10:28come, you know, those, the first one with the doe came down the
- 10:31hill and they kind of they were coming toward us, but like on a
- 10:35leftward path, you know, like this, This Is Us, this is them.
- 10:40And I just kind of assumed again, you, you can only assume
- 10:45that they're likely going to follow the same trail and set.
- 10:51But as I was watching him, he wasn't, he was just directly
- 10:56facing us, made it all the way down to the bottom of the, the
- 10:59hill. And that's when the other one
- 11:02popped up right next to us. So like, I took my eyes off of
- 11:04that because we turned and focused on that and it didn't
- 11:06pan out. And then we turned and looked
- 11:10back at him and he was just coming just nowhere, not taking
- 11:14the trail that those ones did. Just I mean, when you say
- 11:18straight at us, it was literally straight at us.
- 11:22I had ranged A prickly pear at 53.
- 11:25I had ranged the one he was at the four at 100.
- 11:29And dumb me just again, hindsight's 2020.
- 11:34Sometimes like you lose sight of like shots can end up close,
- 11:39close range. And I ranged nothing before 53.
- 11:45And so this deer is moving on a string on a clip straight to us.
- 11:51And all I could do is just whip out and try to arrange a couple
- 11:55of things. And I had arranged one thing and
- 11:58he was already passing it. And so I just turned and
- 12:02arranged something as close as possible to me and it was 30 on
- 12:05the dot. And as I'm lowering the range
- 12:09Finder to put it down, he's passing it.
- 12:12That's how speedy he's like, he's just walking leisurely.
- 12:17The deer walk fast when they're not stopping and feeding and
- 12:21stopping and feeding. And so I had to take it.
- 12:26I would call it an educated, unmarked guess.
- 12:29Yeah, yeah. I mean.
- 12:30Something I had. Something that's not unmarked.
- 12:32Yeah, that's. It is unmarked.
- 12:34It is. You don't have a range on.
- 12:35I don't consider that unmarked. If you know something is like 25
- 12:39yards and then say something's passed and if you you at least
- 12:42can go heads probably like whatever 32 like a guess off of
- 12:46something unmarked is like you're in a field and someone
- 12:49put something out there and they're like how far is that?
- 12:51That's why I call it educated unmarked because because marked
- 12:54is marked you have rather range the animal or something it is
- 12:57standing right next to and I do not have that.
- 13:00So I would still call it an educated unmarked because you
- 13:03still don't have a marked range of the animal or something
- 13:09that's standing next to. I would say that that is a very
- 13:13you. You hardly ever get a exact
- 13:16yardage and shoot something when you're hunting spot and stalk on
- 13:19the ground. I think usually it's what you
- 13:21call educated unmarked. That's most my.
- 13:24Where I range he moved though he he walked sideways I would say
- 13:30about 7 yards to me that is not yes like like when we go out we
- 13:39start ranging bushes and junipers and and cactus and
- 13:43whatnot so that like if they pass those things we know what
- 13:47those ranges are but. Educated.
- 13:50Unmarked. I still wouldn't call that
- 13:52educated unmarked because if they're passing right by it then
- 13:57that is the range like they're in line with it's.
- 13:59Probably off by a few. At least you know.
- 14:01I would say a few. It depends, you know, But again,
- 14:05I think that's very common in spot and stock hunting is like
- 14:09I've probably shot 3/4 of the stuff where it's like I made a
- 14:12had a range for 47 and it's like he's probably right around 47,
- 14:16but could be 51, could be 44. That also works for you because
- 14:21you're shooting a 70 LB boat and 29 1/2 inch straw.
- 14:25Yeah, that's why I think it's very good.
- 14:27That's why about that guessing too, like within a few years,
- 14:30like increments, you know what I mean?
- 14:32Like if you could see something, OK, I have that Bush ranged at
- 14:3541, he's walking a trail, my side of it, he's probably 2
- 14:40yards closer. So, you know, 30 or 39 I mean.
- 14:44Sure. Yes, I get what you're saying,
- 14:46but where that where I have to be better?
- 14:49Yeah, at guessing than you do. It's because if I'm off by three
- 14:52yards, that's the difference in missing and hitting the animal.
- 14:55Well, I think that's the case if you're like past 40 yards, but I
- 14:59think from like 20 to 40, it's probably not as vast of a
- 15:03difference as you might think. I don't know.
- 15:05I don't know it would. Be something you could test
- 15:07though, right at the range and that would be a good thing to
- 15:09test. Like, OK, if I shoot from 20 to
- 15:1140, like how much is being off 5 yards at 25?
- 15:17Yeah. Or in this case, you know, 30
- 15:22and he was at about 32 and I shot for 40.
- 15:26Yeah. And I think that's.
- 15:27Probably a pretty pretty big. Difference and eight yards is.
- 15:31Probably like that much. Maybe, yeah, I don't know.
- 15:34Maybe not, but we'd have to practice.
- 15:36We'd have to. We'd have to go and do some
- 15:38experiments. Yeah, morally.
- 15:39But anyways, guessed too much distance because I should have,
- 15:45again, hindsight. When you're thinking about this
- 15:47and things are moving fast, you also have to get faster and
- 15:50better at doing that. Making an educated, unmarked
- 15:54guess is that though he was moving away from the thing that
- 16:00I had marked, he was still almost moving laterally with it.
- 16:06But you can't like I hadn't passed that topography yet.
- 16:11So he was there was like we were in a a wash.
- 16:17You can call it a ditch. And there was a hill, a little
- 16:20little hill, and he was up above it but behind it.
- 16:25So like I couldn't see the bottom of his legs to see that
- 16:28it was fully like pretty much lateral.
- 16:33I thought he was moving away because at this point he'd come
- 16:37and then he turned and was going this way.
- 16:39And so I thought the distance was just increasing as he's
- 16:44moving away from the Bush, but it wasn't enough because he was
- 16:49still also lateral. So it just, he wasn't going far
- 16:53enough back for the guess of 40. But to have like 2 of them just
- 17:01come straight at you, just standing there goes to show that
- 17:06like the rut can distract them a lot.
- 17:08And when you have good wind and you know, you come in quietly
- 17:12and whatnot. But that was quite an experience
- 17:19for them to just walk straight to you it.
- 17:22Was awesome. It was, it was really cool.
- 17:24You don't get things situations like that super often.
- 17:28So it's always a treat when you're in a rut frenzy like
- 17:31that. And it just we were right place,
- 17:32right time. I mean, we were in a bottom and
- 17:34they came right by us. And then, you know, another
- 17:36time, we almost have the same situation play out where we were
- 17:39in a bottom trying to beat a buck there and then he was there
- 17:43before us. And then it ended up that a
- 17:44bigger buck was still in there and we stalked in and my hands.
- 17:48The last morning. Wasn't cold.
- 17:50And then one time with Tove, too.
- 17:52I mean, Tove and I shoot, we got so close.
- 17:54Once again, we're stalking a different deer and we're up just
- 17:58hanging out by these doves and we're kind of pinned down.
- 18:00We don't really have anywhere to go.
- 18:02And those are working closer to us like, because they're
- 18:04curious, you know, and they'd probably come from like 80 yards
- 18:08to maybe or maybe 95 to like 80. And then out of nowhere, a
- 18:13bigger buck shows up out of nowhere, right up there, right?
- 18:16And then the dough turns and they're coming right to us.
- 18:19And finally me and me and Tolver just hunkered down and we got to
- 18:2466 yards and when he went to like get like shimmy to draw the
- 18:29deer busted. But it was cool.
- 18:30It was once again just like a total rut scenario and.
- 18:34Yeah, that's why I watched that clip and it's like, that's why I
- 18:37always say like, you know, maybe 80 to 90% of it is is skill.
- 18:42And then after that, there is always, there's never not a time
- 18:48that luck is not involved with spot and stock.
- 18:51Because in that instance, like you got as close as you could,
- 18:58but it was wide open. You know, Granny, you can't
- 19:00hide. Like we've discussed this.
- 19:01You can't just stand behind the tree or the juniper or the Bush
- 19:04because how are you going to shoot?
- 19:06But to have some bit of cover can always help.
- 19:10And then that instance Ted had none, you know?
- 19:14No, we kind of pinned down. I mean, we were to the right of
- 19:16a tree, which is good because it kind of breaks up your outline
- 19:19and everything. But yeah, you got to sit or
- 19:22stand in places where you got shooting windows.
- 19:24That is key. So yeah, really it was deer
- 19:28hunting was awesome. I haven't.
- 19:32I didn't have A tag after January last year, so I do this
- 19:36year and I'm excited about that. Get to try some different units
- 19:41and that'll be fun. Then for Javelina, we saw a lot
- 19:47in the 1st 10 days where Tove had his tag and the video will
- 19:51come out. It's we didn't do the best job
- 19:53of filming this time, but we did get a couple of shots on film,
- 19:58one or two audio I think sort of.
- 20:01So it was OK, but Tove. I'm trying to think here.
- 20:07We stalked a group and got in on them and he we were kind of
- 20:13stuck me and told film and we're trying to come around this horn.
- 20:16We had heard him and then like ended up finding them and they
- 20:20were right below us. You know, it's like it's crazy
- 20:22how sound echoes. It sounded like they were a long
- 20:24ways away and then they ended up only being like 100 yards.
- 20:28So we stalk in, Brianna stays on the hill and we try to get in
- 20:31and the best we could do is like 60.
- 20:36Like it was just like we had to come around this like Knuckle
- 20:40and the one was just bedded looking right at us and they
- 20:43were already sort of nervous, like the wind happened.
- 20:45It was goofy. So we finally get a shot at like
- 20:4955 within Tobes using the dual track and he forgot to move it
- 20:54right. So he shot for like 30.
- 20:57So they all came up way short. It hustles, hustles off and
- 21:02stands there. He gets another shot.
- 21:04That one doesn't pan out either. And they run off, you know?
- 21:07So we're like, OK, that that really didn't pan out too well.
- 21:12So we're walking around. We get back to the top where
- 21:14you're glassing and you're like, hey, there's one javelina just
- 21:17still going across top of this hill.
- 21:19So we're watching it and ends up going out of sight.
- 21:23And then we see two more down in the bottom.
- 21:25So we're like watching those ones and we're like, maybe we'll
- 21:28go after those ones. And this is when I turn and I
- 21:31see something coming down caught my eye right where the javelina
- 21:35had gone up basically. So I'm like, that's probably the
- 21:38same javelina coming back down. We should get in there.
- 21:40You know, it wasn't long before I saw it wasn't a javelina.
- 21:45It was a quite a Monday, right? This big tail.
- 21:47And I'm like, he's just walking. Just one of them, you know, big
- 21:50dark one. And I'm like.
- 21:53And if you don't know what a quadamonde is, you should pause
- 21:55real quick and go. They've all put it on the
- 21:57screen, right? Yeah, yeah, because they're you
- 22:00say it and a lot of people don't know what it is.
- 22:03It's like it's literally like a mix of a raccoon, a monkey, an
- 22:06anteater or I don't know what all got together and had an orgy
- 22:12and made a quatham Monday. But it's crazy.
- 22:16But it is in the family correct of the raccoon.
- 22:19I believe so, yeah. So anyways, it's coming down and
- 22:22it's like, I guess I'll try to get in there.
- 22:25You can shoot one per year. So.
- 22:28And I've only ever, I've haunted this country for like almost 30
- 22:33years now and I've only seen them.
- 22:35This is the third time I've seen one in person.
- 22:38Like, so it's very rare to see one, sort of like a Mountain
- 22:41Lion or something. You there's probably shit loads
- 22:44of them. You just never see them.
- 22:46So I'm like, God, I got to try it.
- 22:48So, you know, I never stalked 1. So I don't know, like how tough
- 22:51this will be. And I got my new bow that I
- 22:53barely shot. Like they're not, they're not
- 22:56big. So I loop around the hill and
- 22:58I'm stalking in and and we normally would have filmed, but
- 23:01again, like this is like a once that chance that doesn't happen
- 23:05very often and we don't know how tough it's going to be.
- 23:07So we're like, OK, let's I just get over there, get around the
- 23:10hill, get in position, wins good.
- 23:13And he's coming down one side of the hill and he's just like kind
- 23:16of meandering through the bushes and I'm like on the opposite
- 23:19side of a ravine. So we have like a ditch between
- 23:22us and I'm ranging him and he's like 45 but he kept staying
- 23:28behind bushes, bushes. So I never really got a like a
- 23:32draw on him. And finally he was about to come
- 23:35in a window and I might have drawn.
- 23:38I think you said you did once and he didn't stop.
- 23:41Moving well, I whistled at him and he didn't stop.
- 23:44This is when I realized like I can at least this particular 1
- 23:48is not that hard to stop. But then he like goes behind the
- 23:51bushes again and he starts going uphill and stuff can change in
- 23:54an instant. He can just choose to run away
- 23:56and it's been done right? So he starts working back up the
- 24:00way he came and I start working up the drainage on my side and
- 24:05it kind of like he's sort of almost heading to the tip.
- 24:07So I'm like OK, my shot should get closer here.
- 24:11So I arrange, I make a window, he's not in it yet, but I
- 24:14arrange a window and then I get my sight ready and here he comes
- 24:18into the window, right? So then I draw and he's I
- 24:23whistle at him again, he's not stopping.
- 24:25So then I do the little varmint squeal and then he stops like
- 24:28perks up, looks at me. And again, Nubo haven't
- 24:33admittedly shot it near as much as they should.
- 24:36Put the pin on him and I mean, I couldn't hit him better it.
- 24:38Was like that was a. Perfect, Yeah.
- 24:41Perfect shot. Quiet Monday.
- 24:42I want to say it was 30, 6 yards if I remember right.
- 24:47So 36 yards. You probably got to vital the
- 24:50size of a tennis ball maybe and freaking blew it out.
- 24:54And then he he ran up the hill and went down in about 15
- 24:58seconds. And Brianna sort of filmed.
- 25:02Yeah, well, the thing was like, so Ted moved really fast to
- 25:07follow you and that made me a little nervous because like,
- 25:13basically like where you guys were at when you first saw that
- 25:16Javelino down in the bottom. I mean, the have the quality was
- 25:20just right across from that, but we're up high.
- 25:23So I didn't want to move that fast and get that close, not
- 25:30knowing where you were circling down around the hill and like
- 25:34get there in front of you and spook it off.
- 25:37So Ted went out and I just kind of slowly crept out there and I
- 25:44was trying to grab clips at times when it wasn't behind a
- 25:47Dang Bush, it would like either go down at like the base of a
- 25:50prickly pear or like the base of a Bush, like where you just
- 25:53couldn't see it and get a clip of it, film it.
- 25:59And so I had make it to Ted and both of us, what we think what
- 26:05we think is crazy is that both of us never saw the quad Amande
- 26:09leave this last prickly pear. I tell Ted where I think the
- 26:13last was. He goes Yup, it was just not
- 26:15prickly pear. I get the like he's trying to
- 26:17get me to set up the camera on the the tripod and his didn't
- 26:27like. I don't think the the I had the
- 26:33what you caught this thing? The mount they.
- 26:35Didn't have a mount on it. Yeah.
- 26:37So it was like, this is pointless, Like I don't need the
- 26:39tripod, but so I'm just setting it on the tripod.
- 26:41And no sooner do I hit record and we just hear and we both our
- 26:49heads turned because we followed the sound of the air and we're
- 26:51like, that doesn't seem right. We never saw that Quadamonde
- 26:59leave that prickly pear. It had to have happened in a
- 27:02time where like I was trying to get the tripod set up and Ted,
- 27:06you know, looked away then to to take his, you know, binoculars
- 27:11off or something. But the distance he travelled in
- 27:14that time was just what was like, wow.
- 27:16So again, didn't get that on. Not the shot but I did film the
- 27:20animal as did you something. So we got footage of the animal
- 27:24and I believe there actually is audio of of my arrow hitting it.
- 27:28I think you can hear. So it it, it's kind of fun, but
- 27:31I was just super stoked to get that chance.
- 27:34And if anyone is watching this as a taxidermist and is
- 27:38interested in doing some sort of collaboration with it, I do plan
- 27:42to full body mount it and probably put it in here in the
- 27:44studio. So if you want some publicity
- 27:47for your taxidermy service, reach out and maybe we can make
- 27:50something happen. I do have a guy in mind, but we
- 27:53haven't solidified anything yet, so reach out on that.
- 27:58But yeah, it was really cool. Now, wasn't there another?
- 28:03There was another time he let I thought an arrow fly for
- 28:06Javelina prior to that one. Me and Tov, yeah, no, I think
- 28:12that was the first time we only stalked javelin twice, so.
- 28:17But yeah, good times there and then, yeah, we proceeded to hunt
- 28:22deer for a few more days. Lots of stocks, but nothing ever
- 28:26got done. So no, no other.
- 28:29That was the only time. Well, other than the time I just
- 28:31flung there for absolutely no reason at Orgasaurus.
- 28:34That doesn't even count that. Was goofy, but so anyway, yeah,
- 28:39so then we get to the date that we had planned to move to a new
- 28:43unit where we could have Lena hunt.
- 28:45And this would give us about, I think, like 10 to 12 days,
- 28:51probably about 12 days to hunt, which like should be ample for
- 28:55Javelina, you would think, right?
- 28:56But new unit, at least for Javelina, I haven't haunted
- 28:59there since I think 2818 and maybe a little bit in 2021.
- 29:06So we get to the unit and start looking for peccaries and just
- 29:12hitting glassing spots. And Matt joins us and we're
- 29:15glassing and glassing, glassing, breaking off into two groups,
- 29:20glass and elsewhere. And where we're hunting is
- 29:24pretty populated and it's very close to a major populated city.
- 29:28So on the weekends it gets blasted with people on side by
- 29:32sides, off roading. And a lot of hunters from this
- 29:35big city will come out for the weekend and hunt in this unit.
- 29:39So what? It didn't take us too long to
- 29:41learn that. A couple of things #1 the
- 29:47javelina in this unit are pretty educated, they're smart #1 #2
- 29:55they do not hang out where you can glass them from a road.
- 29:58Very much so you ended up. We ended up having to hike a lot
- 30:03and the country was actually really gnarly, like steep,
- 30:07rocky, nasty, big. In places very shaily or failing
- 30:12sand. Now I will say like it's funny
- 30:15because we've haunted a couple places now that you could say
- 30:19are pretty big, like OHV areas, like off roader fun places.
- 30:26And I've seen it two different ways.
- 30:28Now where like animals are, I wouldn't call them tame by any
- 30:32means, but like we'll acknowledge a vehicle by looking
- 30:36at it like and then kind of either just walk off or do
- 30:39nothing based on how threatened they feel.
- 30:42Or like we saw in this unit, they are extraordinarily
- 30:47skittish of remaining anywhere near, you know, not even run
- 30:51away from a vehicle. Like you wouldn't find them
- 30:53anywhere near a road. You have to hike in 1/2 mile
- 30:58through a bunch of, you know, rolling hills or extremely steep
- 31:02stuff to start at the top and then from there start your
- 31:08glassing and hike around to get a different viewpoint vantage
- 31:12point. It's just funny how it can go to
- 31:17the I've seen it go to different ways about an animal's behavior
- 31:20near off roaders. This was just not one of those
- 31:24units. Well, I think partially is it's
- 31:27very open country, relatively speaking.
- 31:29So like animals are like, whereas like if you're an animal
- 31:33in an area with timber, you're like, I can be close to a road
- 31:37and peeps, no one will see me. Whereas like these dudes, if
- 31:39you're near a road, like they're going to probably see you.
- 31:43So I think that's part of it. But yeah, it ended up being
- 31:45super physical. We spent a freaking boatload of
- 31:49time buying the Tricers tripods, and by nose.
- 31:54And by the way, Tricer, The best tripods are so light, so easy to
- 31:58pack. The new AD and BC are even
- 32:00smaller. Even better, we do carry them on
- 32:03bowdisciples.com and right now there's a giveaway for a half
- 32:07dozen HL Rs Bee sprout heads, boning veins, grip tape, nose
- 32:12button, peep tuner from Beaumar Archery and a four pack of our
- 32:17game bundle. And every 10 bucks gets you an
- 32:21entry. So if you buy a Tricer tripod
- 32:23and panhead off boat disciples.com, you're going to
- 32:25have a lot of entries and have a good, good chance to win.
- 32:29Or you can get them on tricer.com with code team BD as
- 32:33well. But hit our website because you
- 32:35get a chance to win some bitching stuff that makes more
- 32:37sense to me. But yeah, the tripods are key.
- 32:42I don't even consider you glassing if you're not behind
- 32:45the tripod. And it was kind of interesting
- 32:47because on a prior hunt I had had those stabilizing binoculars
- 32:52from Alpen and you know, it's like you almost think like, oh,
- 32:59I don't even need a tripod if I have these.
- 33:01But that is not true. Like when you're sitting and
- 33:04glassing for like 8 hours a day, which is about what we were
- 33:07doing, when you add up the evening in the morning, about 7
- 33:10to 8 hours a day of glassing non-stop, you need a tripod.
- 33:14You just need one. Even if you have the stabilizing
- 33:17binos, you need them on a tripod.
- 33:18It's just not an option. Now, I will say if you're
- 33:22hunting in like timber and stuff and you're just still hunting
- 33:25through it, that's where I think having those stabilizing binos
- 33:28in the harness is nice because if you're just cruising around
- 33:31and checking trees every 200 yards, you probably don't need a
- 33:34tripod for that. Yeah, you're probably, and it's
- 33:37not super efficient. So like, I think in some cases
- 33:40it's nice to have both tools, the stabilizing binos and the
- 33:45tripod, but I just love. But when you're an open country
- 33:48or even if you're in a timber, but like you're going from, you
- 33:52know, you're going to hike into timber, that's where your, your
- 33:55stocks going to go. Or you know, where you got to
- 33:57traverse through or whatever. But you're getting to the top of
- 34:01a mountain, cliffside, whatever and then glassing out into to
- 34:04canyons or you know, prairies or flats or whatever.
- 34:09The tripod is still then needed. But and I think the reason my
- 34:12opinion is the reason for it and I think you'd agree is that
- 34:15though the stabilizing binoculars, they do live up to
- 34:20their expectation. They are very fantastic.
- 34:22They're very good. They take away all those shapes.
- 34:25Especially if you're like Rd. hunting or glassing from the
- 34:28road or walking around still hunting.
- 34:30Like they definitely have their place, but I love.
- 34:32Duration and the duration in which you have to glass for and
- 34:39I can sit there behind the glass and just go like this for an
- 34:43hour without needing to stop glassing or longer, you know, I
- 34:47just get impatient or bored. But you could go for forever,
- 34:52you know, like there there's nothing your arms are doing
- 34:56other than moving your your tripod every so often when
- 35:04you're holding stabilizing by nose or guess what, these arms
- 35:09get tired. And so that time that, like, you
- 35:15don't realize that you're wasting like putting your arms
- 35:18down and then now all of a sudden you skip a spot like when
- 35:23you're panning and you're gritting things out, like you
- 35:27might just pick back up and look somewhere else.
- 35:29And that time you skip letting the binos down and putting them
- 35:33back up, you can very easily, you know, miss an area you
- 35:36didn't look at. Or I think people occasionally
- 35:40move too fast with stabilizing binos instead of really staring
- 35:43at things. People move too fast in general,
- 35:46but yeah, but yeah, I think the key here is it's important to
- 35:50have both things. But obviously we are really
- 35:52spending time behind the Tricers and like I said, boat
- 35:55disciples.com forum. But we were, we were freaking
- 35:58pounding the glass, pounding the glass.
- 36:01And I don't even think we saw a peccary.
- 36:04I think it was there 65. Yeah, I was going to say maybe
- 36:07like 4, but yeah. Maybe it was 4.
- 36:10But I remember we're sitting there glassing and it was like
- 36:16the sun wasn't even quite up yet, but we're looking directly
- 36:19where the sun is going to come up.
- 36:21Or I was and you were looking. We were looking at the same.
- 36:24Hillside. Yeah, exactly.
- 36:25And I just go, hey, I see a group of them, you know, and I
- 36:30saw a group. I couldn't believe it.
- 36:31I was like, holy shit. I see a group, you know, and
- 36:34there was a lot of them. So I'm like, call the call Matt.
- 36:37And I'm like, hey, we see some like come over to our location.
- 36:41We'll try to go in here and get you get on them on the glass and
- 36:46before you know it, they're out of sight like.
- 36:49They were moving when I got them into my glass already.
- 36:52I've never seen peccaries move so much.
- 36:54Ever. They were maybe insight for like
- 36:562 minutes and then they're out of sight.
- 36:59So before Matt even arrives and you are even hardly ready, I'm
- 37:05like, hey, meet me over there. And I just start booking it
- 37:08through the desert to get up to where hopefully I can find them.
- 37:12Oh, we both. Left for that one the first
- 37:14time. We both left at the same time,
- 37:16but once we got to the first hill, you went off pretty
- 37:22immediately to the next hill over.
- 37:25Well, I waited for Matt and Ted, but then I checked and you went
- 37:29another hill over, so I left them and.
- 37:33Well, I got to that first hill as fast as I could.
- 37:36I didn't care if you were keeping up.
- 37:37I'm like, I need to get up there as fast as possible.
- 37:39So I get up to that first rise. And to your credit, you were
- 37:42there not very long after. You've gotten faster, Buster.
- 37:45You've gotten faster, yes. But anyway, I'm up there and I'm
- 37:48breathing because I just freaking pinned it up here now.
- 37:51I start glassing. Nothing.
- 37:52Nowhere to be. You get there, we're glassing
- 37:55together, nothing. And then I say, hey you.
- 37:57Take off to the next hill. Nothing.
- 37:59Nothing, Third Hill. Nothing.
- 38:01Matt and Ted make it out and we all spread out our glassing.
- 38:04Nothing, nothing. So we never saw them again.
- 38:08We got the slip from a big group of probably 10 plus and that was
- 38:13very obviously disheartening. So we'd worked so hard to find
- 38:16them and then I believe it might have been the very next morning
- 38:20or maybe 2 mornings later. But we have this plan where
- 38:24Teddy has to go to town to do some tasks.
- 38:29The plan is that we're going to get out there and we're all
- 38:31going to kind of pick different fingers and just like walk and
- 38:34spread out and everyone picks their first class and knob.
- 38:38But we're a long ways apart from everybody.
- 38:39You know, probably like, I don't know, 4 or 500 yards between
- 38:43each person on different knobs and fingers.
- 38:47And I'm walking this top and it's howling on the top, right.
- 38:50And I look and I just see something like on the hill I'm
- 38:53on like kind of go do this and it's black.
- 38:55And I'm like shitting my shitting my bridges.
- 38:59That's got to be a peccary, you know?
- 39:01And he's only like 160 yards, right?
- 39:05And then there's a bunch of them, just a whole bunch of them
- 39:07and I'm standing here 160 yards. I'm like, hey guys, like I got
- 39:11them right here. But y'all got to walk over and
- 39:13we'll try to figure it out. Well, what's funny is when at
- 39:17first, like when you you told me you texted like a pin of where
- 39:23you were and said they're probably got 200 yards from me.
- 39:28I think it's what the tech said or something.
- 39:29And and then I sent you a pin to myself and I checked the
- 39:34distance. I again, I don't know, it
- 39:36registered. I don't know why I didn't say it
- 39:38to you, but it registered my brain.
- 39:40So I said it to Matt because basically I was the furthest
- 39:44away the way we had spread out. And so I should have said it to
- 39:47you and I said it to Matt, but I was like, there is literally no
- 39:55way in the distance that they are from James and how far I
- 39:57was, I think it was 580 yards from your pin.
- 40:02And so I was like, there's no way that I am going to make it
- 40:07there before a situation develops with these javelina.
- 40:12And so I told Matt like you guys just do whatever you need to do.
- 40:16I'm not attempt to make it over there but.
- 40:20I will probably not make it before a play develops.
- 40:24And then Matt, that's what Matt told me because again, I like
- 40:28kind of left you alone at that point.
- 40:31We'd had the one phone call when you told me and and then I got
- 40:34the pin. And so when Matt called, he told
- 40:39me like where they were like on the sunny side of the, the hill
- 40:44that you're on, not the other side that I can't see or none of
- 40:47us can see. And as I go, that is my route
- 40:52just got double the length because I can't just come
- 40:54straight at you because I'll just be coming straight at the
- 40:57javelina and the wide, you know, little rolling hills down at the
- 41:01bottom. And then that was a really nice
- 41:04flat down there. I glassed it a lot of times
- 41:06prior to like it had a nice tree down there and everything.
- 41:10So like I'm going to be in the wide open to get to these
- 41:13hammering. I'm going to have to go around
- 41:14the other mountain that you told me to meet Matt at, go around
- 41:18the backside of it and come, you know, the same direction Matt
- 41:21was going, only he was half the distance that I was.
- 41:26And so, yeah, hindsight's always 2020.
- 41:30I, Matt was so close. Like, party's like, man, just
- 41:36get up to the top of the hill and try to find a peccary.
- 41:39Like, you know, they're always in groups half the time.
- 41:42But you, you know what happened next.
- 41:46Very disappointing. So yeah, I see them.
- 41:48They're about 160 yards ish and so I'm just standing there.
- 41:53I'm right, I'm pretty close by, but I'm on top of them.
- 41:56So I'm like, OK, I guess I'll just the wind was, it was kind
- 41:59of marginal with where I saw them, but luckily it was howling
- 42:02so hard and it had like they were here and the wind was
- 42:05probably blowing like I'm here, they are here.
- 42:08And the wind was probably blowing here, which isn't great,
- 42:11but it was blowing so hard and they're below me.
- 42:14I think I was like, it should probably be OK.
- 42:18My wind should be blowing #1 left of them or or east of them,
- 42:22and it should blow over them if it goes because it's really
- 42:26howling. So anyway, I'm just sitting
- 42:28there and as I'm sitting, I start to notice that they're a
- 42:32whole bunch is coming towards me.
- 42:34So they were like 160 and then they were 120 and then they're
- 42:39like 80. And I'm like, OK, I might have
- 42:41to just shoot one from right here possibly.
- 42:44So I start getting my tripod set up, which would have been great.
- 42:47I have the camera shot set up. They're coming right to me.
- 42:50I'm like, this is going to be aesthetic.
- 42:51I'll feel bad if I pipe one, but like if they come right to me, I
- 42:55got to shoot one, right? So I'm sitting there and then
- 42:58Matt calls me and is like, hey, what do I do?
- 43:03And it was windy, right? So you can't hear me unless I
- 43:06talk a little louder. So like without even thinking
- 43:09like, oh, that you're going to spook if I talk, I'm just like,
- 43:12oh, just just come right down to me, like get on the other side
- 43:15of the hill and then come to me. And then as I'm saying that,
- 43:18they all turn and just walk away.
- 43:20And I'm like, God, that was so dumb.
- 43:23Like, why did I do that, you know?
- 43:25And so I'm like, OK, I got to shoot one, but I really don't
- 43:29want to not film. I hate not filming.
- 43:31My job is to make content right? And it's fun.
- 43:33Like I like that element. So I'm like, OK, well, I got to
- 43:36make this happen. So I'm, I bring my tripod with
- 43:39the camera on it. I put them out on bring the
- 43:40camera and I loop around and sure as shit, I get right to
- 43:44them right on their path. They're coming right in front of
- 43:47me. One stops at probably like 35,
- 43:50but my camera, I'm on such a steep slope, I can't like get it
- 43:54set without tipping over. So I'm trying to get it set up
- 43:57and and then that one moves off and I'm like, OK, this is
- 44:00perfect. I said it's the that one left.
- 44:03But now I have a little gap and more are going to come.
- 44:05So this is perfect. So I get the camera somewhat
- 44:07right and boom, here comes three more right through the same gap
- 44:10but even closer. So I'm huffing at them and they
- 44:13just will not stop. They keep going.
- 44:16So now I'm like, OK, well I'm waiting.
- 44:18I'm figuring more will come and that must have been the last
- 44:21three. No more games.
- 44:22So then I go down the hill. Still, it's so Dang steep that
- 44:26I'm struggling with the tripod. I'm just like and I'm holding.
- 44:29My favorite story is when Matt was like, yeah, at the time I
- 44:34didn't know why in the world you were running around with your
- 44:37tripod. He was like, what are you trying
- 44:38to glass them while you're trying to shoot him?
- 44:40But he didn't realize you had the camera set up on the tripod.
- 44:44Well, luckily they're very light, so it's like not a burden
- 44:46to take them. But the problem is the terrain
- 44:48was so steep that you're having to make big adjustments.
- 44:51And I am holding my bow and I can't set it down hardly even
- 44:54with the mule because it's so steep.
- 44:56That sucker is going to go down the hill.
- 44:58So I see them down below me and I'm like, OK, they're like fit
- 45:02shoot for 55. That's probably like 60
- 45:04something. But because of steepness.
- 45:07So finally I get the camera sort of set up and it's pointed the
- 45:10right direction and I have it recorded and zoomed out.
- 45:13I'm like, that's good enough. It's the best I can do.
- 45:15So I they run through my window like two or three of them and
- 45:21then one, one more comes through and I wolf at him and he stops
- 45:25and I draw and I held the pin felt good.
- 45:27But it's windy as shit and I'm blowing around and I shoot and I
- 45:32mean, I, I thought it was a great shot.
- 45:34It looked like it was perfect. I'm like, OK, he's going to be
- 45:37smoked. And then I hear my arrow just go
- 45:40like hit rocks and he just goes like this just flinches and I'm
- 45:44like, and then he just stands there.
- 45:45So I'm like, as always, reloading as quick as possible.
- 45:50And I probably get to like hear about to pull back.
- 45:52And then he skirts off and I went down there and my arrow was
- 45:55right in his trail sticking up like this.
- 45:58So I think I hit either. I think I must have hit we are
- 46:01right below him probably. And then it made him just flinch
- 46:04because it was so close. He probably felt that the breeze
- 46:07come by. The crazy thing is that picture
- 46:10of like it shows how steep it is.
- 46:14Like usually when you like your Aeros will bury in dirt or you
- 46:17know, or laying on the ground. But like this one is literally
- 46:20like sticking like this out of the ground.
- 46:23I should have taken a better picture because it actually was
- 46:26more of an angle than it looks in my picture.
- 46:28Like it was probably like that, like it was steep.
- 46:32So anyway, I missed and I was like, OK, well, my streak of
- 46:36hitting stuff with the Alliance didn't last very long.
- 46:40Got one and then a miss. So then.
- 46:43So then yeah, that was it that day.
- 46:46And then the I. And that was the only group of
- 46:51peccaries Matt ever got to see in the whole trip, because I
- 46:56think it was like he had one more maybe full day there before
- 47:00he had to go home or something. But that's the only time he saw
- 47:04peccaries. Yeah, it was really tough.
- 47:07I think we saw a third group maybe while he was there, but I
- 47:10can't remember. I know we saw five groups total
- 47:13in 10 days, so we saw 5 total one.
- 47:18We saw that that group that you missed, then the third group was
- 47:22the one we went after on the other side that we ended up
- 47:26spooking them in that Canyon. I.
- 47:30Might have been the fourth group I think.
- 47:32Think we might be missing 1 and then the fifth one was the one
- 47:35we got him but Tove glassed up two groups so I know we're
- 47:38missing 1. Yeah, it was the ones we went
- 47:43after we stocked in that wash. Literally could see them while
- 47:49we're putting on that was just milling around eating.
- 47:51Matt was gone by that. So it's poor Matt.
- 47:53I mean, he comes out for a week and we see two groups of
- 47:55peccaries and he only actually sees them once.
- 47:57That's why it was tough. And then, yeah, another time
- 48:00Toll finds them. We go in there and it's like you
- 48:02would think it was good. The wind was shifty, though.
- 48:04It was so shifty in this bottom and.
- 48:07But that was the first time I'd seen them the second time
- 48:11because that time we stopped in and and blew it.
- 48:14They were calm then as well. But like by calm, I mean like it
- 48:18didn't seem like they were like on the move.
- 48:21Like they were actually when you see peccaries doing what
- 48:23peccaries normally do, rooting around, eating, moving from Bush
- 48:27to Bush like. I love Zachary.
- 48:29Tom and we were a couple 100 yards putting on sneaks and I
- 48:36could still see them just eating just And then in the time it
- 48:43took for me to look one more time while putting on my sneaks,
- 48:46they were still there, finished up, stood up, gone like the
- 48:51wind. Yeah, it was crazy.
- 48:52It really was. And couldn't find.
- 48:53We stalked all the way to the top, got in there, couldn't,
- 48:56couldn't make it happen. And then, yeah, we ended up
- 48:59seeing another group and really rugged stuff.
- 49:01And we get in there and we're like, they're just gone again.
- 49:06We get in the bowl and it's like they're nowhere to be found
- 49:09until they popped out of a Bush at 32 yards.
- 49:12They were all bedded under this freaking Bush.
- 49:14And we were. They just busted out and.
- 49:17It went. Running around.
- 49:18That close and you had managed to get your pack off, which
- 49:22makes you know, a little bit of noise.
- 49:24You had managed to get your tripod open, set up.
- 49:27You got to pull the tripod out, pull the binoculars out.
- 49:31And then I think just probably between that and then me coming
- 49:35up behind you, which is more separated noise, not noise
- 49:39happening at the same time. So, you know, you hear it once,
- 49:42so then it's again me coming up, me taking off my pack, and I
- 49:46didn't even get my pack off all the way before the bushes just
- 49:50blew up straight down below us. And that was a real
- 49:57heartbreaker. But that's not to say that it
- 50:01wasn't, you know, there was effort.
- 50:05There was an attempt in that one as well, because you had run.
- 50:09Glassed them from so far and got over there and yeah, when they
- 50:14spooked, you know, we've, I watched them, you're like, don't
- 50:18not watch them. So like 3 more go to the left
- 50:21and you're watching them and I stay on the main group and it
- 50:23looks like they're going to settle up under this screen.
- 50:26And then they did not. They turned and went all the way
- 50:28up and over. And you were, let's be honest,
- 50:30you were frustrated and kind of busy at this point.
- 50:33So when I saw them run over the top, I'm like, I know I could
- 50:36run up there and probably shoot one, but then I don't want to
- 50:38get hung by Brianna either. So I'm like, OK, we'll both go
- 50:43up to Zop. And I tried my best to, you
- 50:45know, not go too fast. Of course it was still too fast
- 50:49and I well. That was some the first wasn't
- 50:52steep, but the last I wouldn't even call it the last chunk.
- 50:55That hill, like it like petered and then went back up again and
- 51:01that chunk to get to that flattish section before getting
- 51:04up to where, you know, I finally saw you.
- 51:07That was again like a crawl on force, you know?
- 51:11So I get up to the top and like I'm thinking I'll probably see
- 51:17them on the other side and then maybe can glass them and like
- 51:20get opportunity. That's usually my goal is like,
- 51:22let's get up high, see them again and go from there.
- 51:25So I'm up there, you're nowhere even close to the top.
- 51:27And as I'm up there I don't see anything.
- 51:29And I'm like, OK, let me like get on this rim and get up a
- 51:31little bit higher than I can see into this next ditch.
- 51:36And as I take like a couple of steps, I hear like some
- 51:39commotion down below me. And I look in, this one is just
- 51:42running right to me, right? So he's sprinting up this Cliff
- 51:45and he just stands there on this like rim and shoot.
- 51:51He was quartered to me. I think it was like, shoot for
- 51:5335. And I freaking draw back and
- 51:58shoot and I noticed when I shot he reacted a lot before the
- 52:03arrow got there. Like he I just saw a lot of.
- 52:05Movies are the sketchiest peccaries known to man.
- 52:08He was already alert because he was like charging up to see.
- 52:10He didn't like know where I was, but he heard something.
- 52:13So he's like ready to fight, you know, quartered to me.
- 52:16And I'm like, that's fine. But anyway, he reacts a ton
- 52:19before my arrow gets there and I hit him, but it doesn't sound
- 52:26great. Like it was like OK, and then he
- 52:29turns and runs off down the hill.
- 52:31Like friggin he got shot out of a cannon, right?
- 52:35So he starts running up the other side and this is big
- 52:38country, so like he runs way down anything.
- 52:40When I finally made it to the top and you told me like where
- 52:43he went to, I was like, it's a very long way.
- 52:46So injured Peccary. It can't be that injured.
- 52:49So he runs across and now he's like a long ways and he's still
- 52:54just frigging going and I'm like looking at him and I see blood
- 52:59down his side but I can see it from like the very top of his
- 53:04back coming down and it his whole side is covered but it's
- 53:07like even at the top, which is not good.
- 53:10So I'm like, I hate to say it, but I don't think I hit him.
- 53:14Like, I don't think that's going to be a lethal shot.
- 53:17Like you always tell me a a like high meat wound a lot at 1st and
- 53:21then. Peccaries have that much hair on
- 53:23their back, you know, so if you see blood all the way at the
- 53:25top, you probably just barely grazed, as you know.
- 53:29And this is when I started to wonder, OK, I missed a very
- 53:33steep shot downhill at 55, and now I farmed an easy shot at
- 53:38like 35 now grand. And he moved a lot.
- 53:41I know he did. I saw it, but I also hit him
- 53:45high, right? And we go track them and track
- 53:50them and track them. We spend a lot of time looking
- 53:52and the blood's OK. And then it gets less and less
- 53:54and less and less. And he goes up into the thick
- 53:56trees and I follow him all the way up there and he goes all the
- 53:59way up and over far, like far, far.
- 54:02And then the bloods like basically gone.
- 54:04I'm like, dude, that dude is just fine. 100%.
- 54:06It was like a flesh wound up high.
- 54:08Yeah. And when you say like, we hadn't
- 54:10even, we had found the one spot that he had most likely stopped
- 54:14for a little while. And then after that, we're
- 54:18literally following like every 10 to 20 yards was like, you saw
- 54:22a drop on a rock. Yeah.
- 54:24A drop on a rock. Yeah.
- 54:26A drop in the wash Like nothing like droplets you know, which is
- 54:31what happens after, you know, a high hit like that.
- 54:35It looks great at 1st and then all of a sudden you know it
- 54:39starts to seal up pretty quickly and you got no blood.
- 54:43I was immediately concerned when I heard the arrow hit him and
- 54:46then I when I saw how far he was running, especially with a 2.
- 54:50I think I was shooting 2.3 inch head.
- 54:52I'm like I think I just grazed his back.
- 54:55It's just unfortunate. But then I start thinking to
- 54:57myself, OK, I wonder if like I wonder if my axes are off or
- 55:02somehow something's like messed up.
- 55:04I never am an equipment blamer. Like it probably was just me,
- 55:07but with both 2 very steep down shots and the second one, the
- 55:12first one was a tough shot, second one total chip shot.
- 55:16So I'm like, OK, I wonder if potentially this brand new bow
- 55:20that I've haven't shot that much, which is my fault, isn't
- 55:23quite right. And I have no way to adjust it
- 55:27really. I mean, I can adjust the sight,
- 55:28but on flat ground it was hitting a bit right, but like in
- 55:31the center. And so anyways, you know, that
- 55:36was a very unfortunate situation.
- 55:38Once again, we bust a group, we almost get one.
- 55:41We don't. Very unfortunate.
- 55:44And then the next day we didn't see one at all.
- 55:47I remember that. So we didn't see one the next
- 55:49day. And then the day after Brianna's
- 55:52legs are hammered. She'd been hiking a ton with me
- 55:57and my thought is like OK, she needs to not hike today.
- 56:00So I said why don't you glass from positions where you can
- 56:05just sit by the Kawasaki and Glass mountains and told can do
- 56:09the same with the other Kawasaki in different areas.
- 56:12And I will go hike the mountains and look, and if I'm too far
- 56:17I'll just try to shoot one myself.
- 56:20But at least this way we're covering tons of ground.
- 56:22We're on day 10 at this point. We're on day 10.
- 56:24So it would be, you know, I hike out there, I get all the way to
- 56:28the very top and I'm looking around and you're like, hey,
- 56:33what if I just drive around and pick you up on the other end of
- 56:36the mountain range? And I'm like, I love that.
- 56:39That sounds great. So you drive all the way around.
- 56:41Great plan to glass all that like stuff on the far end that
- 56:44we never look at come around and glass earlier on and all of that
- 56:49stuff on the road. The the wash up to you on the
- 56:52other side of the mountain that we never stop at.
- 56:56You know, like prior to where we saw that dude's F-150, you know,
- 57:00all that we never stopped and looked at.
- 57:02I was like, so I'll just go slow like you said.
- 57:05And yeah, look at all of that stuff.
- 57:08Yeah, and I loved it. From a a hiking perspective, I'm
- 57:12like, that's a great hike, get to see good stuff.
- 57:15And so I had made it pretty far, but I was also working very
- 57:19slow. I was just like still hunting
- 57:21and then sitting and glassing for 30 minutes, still hunting.
- 57:24So I'm making zero. So I told you, I was like, bro,
- 57:26it's going to take me a while and I'm not going to rush.
- 57:28So I'm just going to go slow. Now, did you go up to that top?
- 57:31I was at the very top, yeah, yeah.
- 57:33And I was checking out the stuff on the backside and then I get
- 57:37told says, hey, I saw 1 peccary way over here.
- 57:43And I'm like, OK, well, that's the opposite direction I've been
- 57:46walking. So now I have to go all the way
- 57:48back past where I started and keep going to get to where he's
- 57:53talking about and and you have to, you know, like get all
- 57:58readjusted and get over in glass with him.
- 58:00So he's pretty far away. And so we get over there, takes
- 58:06us a little while to sort of figure out a plan, but we figure
- 58:09out a good plan. We stock in this wash, We get up
- 58:13in this once again, very nasty terrain to get up to the spot
- 58:17and we get over there. And it was nice because we could
- 58:20see them the whole time after like 300 yards out, which is
- 58:24great. So we're walking, great wind.
- 58:27I mean, you'd blow the dust right through your face, you
- 58:30know what I mean? It was perfect.
- 58:31Pretty hard wind, too, and we're stalking in there and at one
- 58:35point we see them or I see them and they're like probably 80
- 58:42yards and I'd go like this to film them and they all turn and
- 58:47just walk. Over, I believe both of us at
- 58:49the same time go no, no, no, no. Yeah, like how?
- 58:53Like the wind's perfect. We're not making noise.
- 58:55We're like. There's literally no.
- 58:59Way they spooked but they all in a like I saw like 3 or 4 of them
- 59:02line up and go over the hill and I'm like Oh my goodness.
- 59:06So we just stop around and I see one actually pretty close to the
- 59:12left coming up out of the bottom and I'm like OK.
- 59:15We're going to be up. We're still there.
- 59:17So I'm like Brand, I get in front of me and I want you to
- 59:20just sort of stalk this direction.
- 59:22So you do great, you're stalking through.
- 59:24I'm ready with the camera. I got my Badlands sacrifice that
- 59:28last pack on which is nice because I have that clip that
- 59:30can go through the camera so I have it right on my chest so I
- 59:33can shoot or range or grab my camera and film really easily.
- 59:38Team BD 20% Badlands gear.com sacrifice also.
- 59:41Do you know I did that entire stock with my my release clip to
- 59:45the bow? Very nice.
- 59:46Isn't that nice? Mirror Archery Boat
- 59:48disciples.com gets you 5 entries for the giveaway that goes
- 59:52through January 31st, so you got a few more days.
- 59:55Now that could be hard if you're in thicker thick stuff, you
- 59:58know, but it made it so much easier that like all.
- 1:00:01All I had to do was just keep one hand on the bow so my arrow
- 1:00:04wasn't bouncing around. But I had immediate access to my
- 1:00:09range. I think I might have walked with
- 1:00:11it for a little while in my hand because I like you just range
- 1:00:16put it away. And I was able to to draw.
- 1:00:19But yeah, so we we can't like there was like a finger that
- 1:00:24came to the top, ish. And then another finger comes
- 1:00:27right back down. So it created the Canyon that we
- 1:00:30had first seen them in, but we knew like they were up toward
- 1:00:34the tops, like we're coming across the top.
- 1:00:37So now you kind of have like a, a cross wind, I guess you could
- 1:00:40say like a downwind first, like in your face.
- 1:00:44And so we get to that next finger to a new bowl.
- 1:00:49I guess you could call it Ravine and that's where you said like,
- 1:00:54let's just hold up and just. Well, yeah, I could.
- 1:00:56Stand still for a. Minute you were a little antsy
- 1:00:58or a little a little tense again and you're you got it.
- 1:01:01We got in there and you're kind of like what what I could tell
- 1:01:04you're a little antsy. So I said, we're just let's just
- 1:01:07stand here. So we stood there and it didn't
- 1:01:09take long and you went, I just saw him right there down there
- 1:01:13and they and I didn't even see him because I'm sort of behind
- 1:01:16the Bush. And then you're like, what do I
- 1:01:19do? I'm like, we'll step out toward
- 1:01:20you could shoot 1, you know, so you take like a step over and
- 1:01:24then I like peek and I could see like 3.
- 1:01:27Or 4. And I'm like, do you, do you see
- 1:01:30him? Because you're not like do And
- 1:01:32you're like, no, I don't see him.
- 1:01:33And I'm like, I don't know how. Like they're just in the open.
- 1:01:36Yeah. So finally.
- 1:01:38You. That's when I stepped step and
- 1:01:41turn and could see there's two down on the left and so I ranged
- 1:01:48them 42 and put it away and go to draw and they kind of step
- 1:01:55off like a few steps. But like it's going downhill.
- 1:01:59And this is again one of those times that I'm glad I didn't
- 1:02:02because peccaries are small animals, you know, like they're
- 1:02:05not the size of a house hog, you know, like maybe the baby one
- 1:02:11that's born. That's about the biggest they
- 1:02:13get but I'm glad because I ranged it after all this
- 1:02:18happened and it went from 42 to just those few steps they took
- 1:02:21downhill because it was so steep.
- 1:02:24Took it to 38 which is almost a 5 yard increment for me and on
- 1:02:28an animal that small. Like if I had not changed, I
- 1:02:31probably would have shot over if I had just decided to shoot at
- 1:02:34the the ones that move down. So I had already gotten into the
- 1:02:39draw. And so you just kind of
- 1:02:41whispered to me like, if you can hold it, just wait though the
- 1:02:43more will come through the window and we could see them.
- 1:02:45Like I could see them just barely on the edge of this
- 1:02:48juniper that's down there. And.
- 1:02:49You could see there was a trail. Yeah, you can see a trail and I
- 1:02:52could see a couple right there amongst the the edge of the
- 1:02:56brushy juniper. And so I was like, I'm just
- 1:03:00going to keep holding. And one walks out, of course,
- 1:03:04with a little baby football, we call them, doesn't stop, just
- 1:03:08walks down to the other ones. And in my mind again, you're,
- 1:03:13you're trying to get faster and faster at these decisions.
- 1:03:18And I was like, no, I'm not going to shoot the moving
- 1:03:21javelina. And it didn't even cross my mind
- 1:03:24at this point that I had a baby and we're on day 10.
- 1:03:27I'm just like, I just want to have Alina.
- 1:03:28I couldn't care less about a baby with it or not.
- 1:03:31Usually I do care about those things.
- 1:03:33But yeah, so it it kept going and I'm still holding.
- 1:03:41I would like to time it with the video and see how long it yeah.
- 1:03:46And I wasn't pointing out the ground.
- 1:03:48Yeah, Mike was a different story.
- 1:03:51But then the baby kind of turns around, it comes back and
- 1:03:57another one finally, like once the baby gets up to it comes,
- 1:04:01comes down into the window and stops and the baby goes back
- 1:04:05down to its mom. And I was like, that's it.
- 1:04:08So I waited just long enough to settle the pin on it.
- 1:04:10And because we're now so like we're going up the finger and
- 1:04:14the winds blowing straight in her face, but now we're shooting
- 1:04:16this way across and down the finger.
- 1:04:19So when like for us, for scent wise, not a big issue based on
- 1:04:23where they were, but for holding the pin, it was like I was
- 1:04:28fighting to keep it upright and not pushed over.
- 1:04:33And so I'm very proud of that factor because normally I'll
- 1:04:36just be like, screw the bubble and just let the arrow go.
- 1:04:40And that is a, you know, that's a not a good idea.
- 1:04:45But I checked the bubble, I looked at the pin, everything
- 1:04:48was good. And then I let it go and.
- 1:04:53Hit the pecker, he good. I mean very good he.
- 1:04:56Ran off and before we even anything really happened yours
- 1:05:00like you. So you hit him and he sort of
- 1:05:02moved like up and stopped and then I'm like here's the camera
- 1:05:05I'm giving you the camera to to film to point at the animals.
- 1:05:08Unfortunately you forgot about this part so well.
- 1:05:11Get a miscommunication again. Let me get to it.
- 1:05:14So the javelina start kind of going crazy and Brianna, you
- 1:05:18know again, she's she's this is her third one in a row.
- 1:05:21So she has some javelina hunting experience, but not quite as
- 1:05:24much as me. And we're also tense because we,
- 1:05:27you know, especially like we wanted to be done with this hunt
- 1:05:30and cut. You wanted to come home and see
- 1:05:31the dog. So she's like very frantic and
- 1:05:36they're all just running around in front of me and I'm like.
- 1:05:38Have we counted in the video yet?
- 1:05:41How many times have you you haven't cut the clip?
- 1:05:43Right, let me finish it. Let me let me finish the story.
- 1:05:45So they run. There's one like in her initial
- 1:05:50window that she shot in. So I said, Brianna, what was
- 1:05:52that range? Because she's filming so she
- 1:05:56can't range, but I know she already knows that range.
- 1:05:58So I said, what's the range? And she said 42 I think.
- 1:06:02So I put my sight at 42. And then after that I hear just
- 1:06:06in the background, I think what listen to the tape going 6550. 5
- 1:06:09Now don't just hear me, don't just hear me.
- 1:06:13You're leaving out a critical factor of I want to go back and
- 1:06:18count. I'll put even put a little
- 1:06:20counting clock on the the video. I think that would be quite
- 1:06:23nice. Even though the video is pointed
- 1:06:25at the ground because you begin to then ask me over and over
- 1:06:32again, what's the range? So I've already now told you 42.
- 1:06:39So I'm presuming that we're no longer Speaking of the 42
- 1:06:43because I've already said it and you probably asked, You asked at
- 1:06:48minimum 3, but I can guarantee more.
- 1:06:52So it's somewhere between four and five times you ask me.
- 1:06:57You can't discount it. It's on the tape, even though
- 1:06:59the tapes facing the ground. You do ask multiple times.
- 1:07:03Yeah, we'll watch. What's the rate?
- 1:07:04We'll watch the tape. We'll see.
- 1:07:05We'll. Watch the tape because you do
- 1:07:07ask multiple times. But my point is, I always tell
- 1:07:10the gang always people always ask me when I'm filming to range
- 1:07:14for him and I always say I cannot range and film.
- 1:07:17I want to just film. And and that's what I, you know,
- 1:07:21I told Brianna I said never range for me again.
- 1:07:23Like I just wanted the one range in my head.
- 1:07:26Maybe I asked more, but like, but hold on.
- 1:07:29There was this franticness. I could tell where you're like,
- 1:07:33I want you to shoot one right now.
- 1:07:35I do not want you to wait for them to settle down and then
- 1:07:37shoot one like I want you to shoot one right now.
- 1:07:39So this Hunt's finished, right? So I'm I'm holding a draw just
- 1:07:42like you just holding the draw and I'm like going to this one,
- 1:07:46this one, this one, this one, and they're all moving.
- 1:07:48And finally 1A little further out stops and he's broadside.
- 1:07:54And this is part of the reason the dual tracks cool is like, I
- 1:07:59think I had the sight set for the first window, which was
- 1:08:02whatever it was 42 and the second one I'm like, it's
- 1:08:07probably 12 to 15 yards further than than that window.
- 1:08:15So I just put the second pin right on them and I'm like, it
- 1:08:17should be close enough. Like it should be pretty close.
- 1:08:20So I shoot and I thump them. Great height.
- 1:08:23It was a little little to the right again.
- 1:08:26I'm pretty sure my boat was not quite.
- 1:08:28Well, so far every shot downhill.
- 1:08:30Alright, alright, when we officially screamed, I would
- 1:08:35love and I would like to see it when you not I don't care to go,
- 1:08:38but like for you to actually look at the bubble, the levels
- 1:08:41when you get that bow tuned because I'll almost guarantee
- 1:08:45you that your bubbles are going to be off to the side and so.
- 1:08:49And it wasn't just like a little everything was way right and
- 1:08:52especially steep stuff. And I think part of the reason
- 1:08:54my shot was pretty good on that one is it was the most flat shot
- 1:08:57I had taken. It was pretty flat.
- 1:08:59So any who hit him and he ran across or ended up being a
- 1:09:07salvage, she was a big one. And she started spinning around
- 1:09:09and I'm like, OK, she's going to be dead right there.
- 1:09:11And she was, she was down right there, probably within a.
- 1:09:13Minute I could see her in my naked eye right there at the.
- 1:09:15Bottom yours went down, didn't go far at all.
- 1:09:18I mean, yours probably went 30-40 yards and then boom, we
- 1:09:21had ourselves a javelina double. It was oh, it was it was like
- 1:09:26you would have thought we were hunting a grizzly bear.
- 1:09:28How tense it was just with like we had worked so hard and we
- 1:09:33were also running out of time. Like we had to leave Friday and
- 1:09:36I want to say it was like maybe Wednesday or.
- 1:09:39Tuesday. Tuesday so we were like time was
- 1:09:41ticking and it wasn't going good. 10 days of hunting.
- 1:09:45We saw a herd 5 * 4 of us gave four of them gave us like the
- 1:09:48slip. And yeah, now I know people are
- 1:09:50going to listen. You say 10 days and five
- 1:09:53encounters. You're like that's one every
- 1:09:55other day like but again, going back to like these were not your
- 1:10:00standard like you know when you know animals habits and like how
- 1:10:05they behave. These were very educated
- 1:10:12Javelina, so like they just even down to like you could be
- 1:10:17nowhere near them. Like you're glassing them,
- 1:10:19watching them and their behavior screams skittish like constantly
- 1:10:24on the move, constantly moving quickly when they are on the
- 1:10:27move. Like those ones we saw the first
- 1:10:29time we saw them, you would have thought they were already
- 1:10:32spooked. They were trotting across the
- 1:10:35top of the hill. When I glass them I never see
- 1:10:39javelina unless they're grab assing, and even then it's like
- 1:10:44in circles and whatnot. Like I never see javelina
- 1:10:47running in a string you know, just by themselves out of the
- 1:10:52blue a half a mile away. They were they were definitely
- 1:10:55skittish. They were definitely educated.
- 1:10:57They definitely like to live in the big country and it was
- 1:10:59tough. It was harsh.
- 1:11:00It was got hot, it was windy every day.
- 1:11:02So it's cold in the mornings, super windy hot, but it was, I
- 1:11:06love hunt Center Challenge and it definitely was that.
- 1:11:08So anyway, we got it done, came home, I went to supercross with
- 1:11:13Kawasaki, which was amazing. Unfortunately, Jocelyn gave me
- 1:11:18and Paul like some really cool Kawasaki cups and we freaking
- 1:11:22forgot and left them in our seats when we left.
- 1:11:25So I'm bummed about that. So hopefully she'll give me
- 1:11:27another one because they were sick.
- 1:11:28But yeah, I got to do a little tour of the rig and it's just
- 1:11:32been good. And then we got a tournament
- 1:11:34this weekend and Yuma, you're not going to shoot, you're going
- 1:11:37to film, but you're excited for that.
- 1:11:38And I'm going to shoot the Proven that'll look much
- 1:11:41different than the last time people seen it, so I'm excited.
- 1:11:44I still have a string that's cut from a beast broadhead, so
- 1:11:47hopefully it makes it through 40 arrows and then I'll get my new
- 1:11:51strings put on. So Road to Vegas still
- 1:11:53happening, Your Arrow series still going.
- 1:11:55I don't know when the next part will be out, but lots of big fun
- 1:11:59stuff coming. I think you're going to an
- 1:12:01outdoor Expo in Pennsylvania, if I'm not mistaken, and you'll
- 1:12:06probably film there some. I'm going on a javelina hunt
- 1:12:09with just a freaking loaded group of guys coming up, so stay
- 1:12:13tuned for that. But yeah, we're going to see you
- 1:12:18guys next Wednesday. Also, I'm about to go get lunch.
- 1:12:22I'm actually going to be a little late with my buddy the
- 1:12:25legend himself, Jack Peterson, who I'm going to confirm
- 1:12:29hopefully is going to do the show for Bow Disciples Challenge
