- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and here with Luna. We're happy to be with you for episode 95. Luna: And I'm ready to learn some more Malay. I've been practicing my market phrases from before, but today I want to focus on one specific fruit. Lucas: Oh, which one? We've done a lot of fruits already — apples, bananas, oranges. Luna: Mangoes! I love mangoes. And I think they're really popular in Malaysia, right? Lucas: Absolutely. Mangoes are everywhere. The word for mango in Malay is mangga. Let's start with the basics: Saya mahu mangga. Luna: Saya mahu mangga. That means 'I want mango.' Lucas: Exactly. Saya mahu mangga. Let's say it together once more. Saya mahu mangga. Luna: Saya mahu mangga. Lucas: Great. Now if you want to ask the price per kilo, you say: Berapa harga sekilo? Luna: Berapa harga sekilo? That's 'how much per kilo?' Lucas: Yes. Berapa harga sekilo? Let's break it down. Berapa means 'how much', harga means 'price', and sekilo means 'one kilo'. Luna: Berapa harga sekilo? Got it. So if I want two kilos, I'd say Saya mahu dua kilo. Lucas: Perfect. Saya mahu dua kilo. You're a natural. Say it with me: Saya mahu dua kilo. Luna: Saya mahu dua kilo. Lucas: Now, sometimes you might want to taste the fruit before buying. To ask 'can I taste?', you say: Boleh saya rasa? Luna: Boleh saya rasa? That's 'can I taste?' Lucas: Yes. Boleh means 'can', saya means 'I', and rasa means 'taste'. Luna: Boleh saya rasa? I'll remember that. Lucas: And one more phrase: if you want to ask if the mangoes are sweet, you say: Mangga ini manis? Luna: Mangga ini manis? That means 'these mangoes are sweet?' Lucas: Exactly. Manis means sweet. So Mangga ini manis? is asking 'are these mangoes sweet?' Luna: Let me practice all of them. Saya mahu mangga. Berapa harga sekilo? Saya mahu dua kilo. Boleh saya rasa? Mangga ini manis? Lucas: Fantastic. You've got them all. Let's put it into a little scene. So imagine you're at a market stall. You see beautiful mangoes. You say to the seller: Saya mahu mangga. Luna: Saya mahu mangga. Lucas: The seller says: Berapa kilo? You say: Saya mahu dua kilo. Luna: Saya mahu dua kilo. Lucas: Then you ask: Berapa harga sekilo? Luna: Berapa harga sekilo? Lucas: The seller gives a price. But you want to check the sweetness, so you say: Boleh saya rasa? Luna: Boleh saya rasa? Lucas: The seller gives you a slice. You taste it. You say: Mangga ini manis? Luna: Mangga ini manis? Lucas: And if it's sweet, you buy. Good job. Now, let's do a quick repetition round. I'll say the English, you say the Malay. 'I want mango.' Luna: Saya mahu mangga. Lucas: 'How much per kilo?' Luna: Berapa harga sekilo? Lucas: 'I want two kilos.' Luna: Saya mahu dua kilo. Lucas: 'Can I taste?' Luna: Boleh saya rasa? Lucas: 'Are these mangoes sweet?' Luna: Mangga ini manis? Lucas: Excellent. You're ready for the market. You know, I've been thinking — a lot of people ask us how we keep making these episodes without ads. Luna: Yeah, it's because of listeners who support us through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. That small group makes it possible for us to keep teaching. Lucas: Exactly. If Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Malay, and you want to help keep it ad-free, that's where you can chip in. Luna: It's completely optional, but it means a lot. Now back to mangoes — I think tomorrow I'm actually going to try using these phrases at the market. Lucas: That's the best way to learn. So practice these today: Saya mahu mangga, Berapa harga sekilo?, Saya mahu dua kilo, Boleh saya rasa?, Mangga ini manis? Luna: I will. Thanks Lucas! Lucas: Thanks for joining us on Learn Malay with Fexingo. See you next time. Luna: Bye!
