- 0:00Speaker 1: Why do sequels suck so much?
- 0:02Speaker 2: It's one more thing I'm strong, one more thing. You
- 0:11Speaker 2: know more about spring riding than I do. Maybe you
- 0:13Speaker 2: have an answer for why sequel suck. But uh, that
- 0:16Speaker 2: conversation just second. First, as we continue to wrap up
- 0:19Speaker 2: the Olympics.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Oh and on the final day of the game, Serbia
- 0:22Speaker 3: be Croatia to win gold and men's water polo. But
- 0:25Speaker 3: I noticed that the goalie for Croatia had a pretty
- 0:28Speaker 3: interesting last name. Check this out well, marking old Pah
- 0:32Speaker 3: now in golf for Croatia and that's him right there.
- 0:34Speaker 4: Bach. The goalkeeper Bax shuttles things down off the post
- 0:39Speaker 4: behind Pia.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Great Josh Bis get back in there, Bach. No more goals, b.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Just I mean the NBC censor was like, what do
- 0:54Speaker 3: I do?
- 0:55Speaker 2: What?
- 0:55Speaker 3: I don't know what to do?
- 0:56Speaker 1: I have imagine winning.
- 0:58Speaker 3: At the Olympics, then hearing here's your metal, Bach, thank you.
- 1:06Speaker 3: His name is Marco Biac. Forget his last name. It's
- 1:10Speaker 3: crazy that his name is Marco and he plays polo.
- 1:15Speaker 3: What's going on?
- 1:18Speaker 4: Michael in Serbia defeating Croatia is a little uncomfortable too.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Fans of warfare in the nineties, I feel like.
- 1:25Speaker 1: They could have changed the pronunciation just to tad to
- 1:29Speaker 1: avoid that whole problem. That's boch.
- 1:33Speaker 4: The name's Biac, it's Biach. Biach's say the guy's name Biach.
- 1:41Speaker 1: That got me. Some of the announcers were clearly enjoying
- 1:44Speaker 1: it too much.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Right, nice at the shop.
- 1:54Speaker 1: That's some pretty childish humor right there. Oh, serious thing
- 1:59Speaker 1: before I get to my way.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Well, they're they're they're Europeans, so you can make that joke. Now,
- 2:03Speaker 4: if you make a joke about like an Asian name
- 2:05Speaker 4: like Wang, then you're eurracist and might lose your career, absolutely,
- 2:12Speaker 4: you know, crowder.
- 2:13Speaker 1: But if it sounds like something funny and it's European
- 2:16Speaker 1: or Western civilization, right then yeah, full on.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Well, and certainly there are words in English that are
- 2:24Speaker 4: obscenities and references to poop and or genitals in other
- 2:29Speaker 4: people's language, and they have fun with that. And I
- 2:31Speaker 4: think that is funny that our word for that is
- 2:34Speaker 4: your word for that.
- 2:35Speaker 1: That's great.
- 2:36Speaker 4: And I don't for a single second think think I'm
- 2:39Speaker 4: a victim of anything.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Of course, most claim.
- 2:43Speaker 4: A victimhood is a quest for power. It's cry bullying.
- 2:47Speaker 4: It's become very effective in the modern world.
- 2:50Speaker 5: I once knew someone with the unfortunate name of Harry Johnson.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Yeah. See was he a radio person?
- 2:59Speaker 5: No not, it's an average guy.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Why wouldn't you go by Harold or your middle name?
- 3:03Speaker 5: I always wondered why why not Harold?
- 3:05Speaker 1: But nope, was Harry Johnson? Was he like? Did he know?
- 3:09Speaker 1: I mean, was he doing that because he kind of knew, Hey,
- 3:11Speaker 1: my name is Harry Johnson. No wicky.
- 3:13Speaker 5: He'd get pissed when people would say his whole name.
- 3:15Speaker 5: So I don't I you know, I'm not really sure
- 3:18Speaker 5: what the whole logic was behind it. I just know
- 3:19Speaker 5: that it was funny.
- 3:21Speaker 4: How did that affect his life? I mean, the fact
- 3:23Speaker 4: that he would get pissed means it kind of it
- 3:26Speaker 4: having stuck in his craw if you will, having h
- 3:28Speaker 4: or being named that.
- 3:31Speaker 1: We don't know that different.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Oh, it's God's sake.
- 3:34Speaker 5: Doing great now, so seeming it wasn't too harsh on him.
- 3:37Speaker 5: But I just remember when we were.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Kids, toughened him up. The boy named Sue syndrome something
- 3:44Speaker 4: I don't.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Know, dirty eggsucking dog that named me Harry Johnson. That's
- 3:48Speaker 1: exactly right.
- 3:49Speaker 3: All right.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Bianca's is there something else we were going to talk about.
- 3:52Speaker 4: I want to mention this. This is serious.
- 3:53Speaker 1: We don't usually do that much serious here, but I
- 3:55Speaker 1: just saw it on the San Francisco Chronicle. Latest car
- 3:59Speaker 1: theft data is out. This is from Oakland, one of
- 4:03Speaker 1: the crimiest places in America. Data shows one vehicle per
- 4:08Speaker 1: thirty people was stolen in twenty twenty three.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Wow.
- 4:12Speaker 1: What doesn't shock me? What if I have like a
- 4:19Speaker 1: medium sized circle of friends, I know a couple of
- 4:22Speaker 1: people who've had their car stolen last year. I mean,
- 4:26Speaker 1: that seems crazy if I'm living in Oakland.
- 4:28Speaker 4: I moved to Porto Prince because it's safer, it's less crime.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Moved to Haiti.
- 4:34Speaker 1: That's stunning. Anyway. I started with the Whitey sequel, suck
- 4:39Speaker 1: so much, and I was my son's making his way
- 4:41Speaker 1: through all the Marvel movies as he ends summer with
- 4:45Speaker 1: a bang. School starts in a week, and he had
- 4:49Speaker 1: the First Captain of America on the other night. I
- 4:51Speaker 1: don't know if you've seen have you seen that, Katie?
- 4:54Speaker 5: See?
- 4:54Speaker 1: If I didn't have kids, I wouldn't have seen any
- 4:56Speaker 1: I didn't see any of these movies. Most of them
- 4:58Speaker 1: are made before my kids were born or when they
- 5:01Speaker 1: were a little little Have you seen it, Michael, No,
- 5:03Speaker 1: not at all. Most grown ups. If you don't have kids,
- 5:05Speaker 1: you're not gonna watch this stuff.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Judy and I watched it more or less in a lark.
- 5:08Speaker 4: It seemed like some good escapist entertainment years ago. When
- 5:11Speaker 4: it first came out, I thought it was terrific, really enjoyable.
- 5:14Speaker 1: First Captain Marvel movie is absolutely fantastic. It's like a
- 5:16Speaker 1: Captain in America. Captain America. I'm sorry, Captain Marvel's horrible.
- 5:20Speaker 1: That is a horrible movie. That's what the chick?
- 5:23Speaker 4: Oh, really bad Captain Marvel or something Marvel. It's something
- 5:28Speaker 4: miss Marvel or an adult. Can we talk about fiscal.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Any Oh please, I'm glad you said that. That's why
- 5:35Speaker 1: I they will make they will not watch a superhero
- 5:39Speaker 1: movie if the chick is the starn But just in
- 5:46Speaker 1: just on sequels in general. And I've seen this with
- 5:50Speaker 1: lots of kid movies, grown up movies, that sort of stuff.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Why do they take the first movie of everything is
- 5:57Speaker 1: like a good kind of rich, good human story and
- 6:02Speaker 1: then they make it like unbelievably fan like it's got
- 6:07Speaker 1: to be so let me give an example, like the
- 6:11Speaker 1: first story you got, man meets woman, falls in love,
- 6:15Speaker 1: they have a kid, whatever, good movie. If they make
- 6:17Speaker 1: a sequel to that, they're gonna have to decide to
- 6:20Speaker 1: be a race car team and go up against the
- 6:22Speaker 1: French in the like I mean, why is it always
- 6:24Speaker 1: like that?
- 6:26Speaker 4: Well, well, part of the problem is as you sit
- 6:30Speaker 4: down to write a like a screenplay, you're gonna come
- 6:33Speaker 4: up with a character or a few characters or whatever
- 6:35Speaker 4: you're gonna have them go through something changes people in
- 6:39Speaker 4: an interesting way that keeps people's attention, and come to
- 6:42Speaker 4: a satisfying conclusion.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Having done that.
- 6:46Speaker 4: When you're gonna do a sequel, you say, okay, now
- 6:49Speaker 4: I got to come up with another arc of that
- 6:52Speaker 4: sort from where they are right now and strike gold again.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Because there are fifty thousand scripts written for everyone that's
- 6:59Speaker 4: produced and five thousand produced movies for everyone that's worth
- 7:03Speaker 4: a crap.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Because so the Marvel movies got worse and worse and
- 7:06Speaker 1: worse until they were just laughable, and I couldn't understand
- 7:08Speaker 1: why you wouldn't. And they do this with all different
- 7:11Speaker 1: kind of movies. When I'm not specifically talking about the
- 7:13Speaker 1: Marvel movies, but so like if you had a couple
- 7:17Speaker 1: of guy buddy cop movie. They start as like they
- 7:19Speaker 1: kind of don't like each other, and then they become
- 7:21Speaker 1: friendly and then they solve a crime and you know,
- 7:23Speaker 1: he saves his wife. Whatever. Good movie. Then the next one.
- 7:26Speaker 1: You liked him in the last movie, but this time
- 7:28Speaker 1: they're doing it in space, And it's always something like that.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And I don't understand why.
- 7:33Speaker 5: Like trying to reach a different audience, maybe the same.
- 7:37Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 7:37Speaker 1: It weren't the last I would think you'd do more formula,
- 7:40Speaker 1: like basically do the first movie again, like Cars another
- 7:44Speaker 1: kids movie, but number two just sucked out loud.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Well, that's why the Toy Story franchise is so beloved.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Each one of those movies was the first three were fantastic.
- 7:54Speaker 1: A good example of them not doing that. Yeah, that's
- 7:58Speaker 1: a good example of them not doing that.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Yeah, they had the framework of as the toys lives changed,
- 8:04Speaker 4: as Andy got older too. But that helped Godfather movies obviously.
- 8:09Speaker 4: But that helped that. It was a large cast of
- 8:11Speaker 4: characters and they were going through generations. But like Buddy
- 8:14Speaker 4: Coop movies, repeating the formula over and over again, that's
- 8:17Speaker 4: what was the Mel Gibson back before he was kicking
- 8:21Speaker 4: the Jews and Lethal Weapon. Yeah, those were, you know,
- 8:27Speaker 4: fairly similar. It was like it was practically a TV series,
- 8:31Speaker 4: but they'd come out once a year and they'd have
- 8:33Speaker 4: better production values. So that's what y'aught to do. Just
- 8:37Speaker 4: make it, make it formul like.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I always hated that as a kid, when they would
- 8:41Speaker 1: bring back Gillian's Island or the cast of Andy something.
- 8:45Speaker 1: They'd bring back the cast of some SHOWY liked, and
- 8:46Speaker 1: then this time again it would be in space or
- 8:49Speaker 1: underwater or whatever. Night Jack didn't choose the Jaws three
- 8:53Speaker 1: in the movie theater. I think I did Jaws three D.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Did you really spend money on that?
- 8:58Speaker 1: I believe I did. Yeah, I got what answer too.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Oh.
- 9:03Speaker 5: I refused to see it because I just knew it
- 9:05Speaker 5: was going to be crap. I kind of did that
- 9:07Speaker 5: with Dumb and Dumberer as well, because I love Dumb
- 9:10Speaker 5: and Dumber. The original movie made me laugh so hard
- 9:12Speaker 5: multiple times. And then I saw they were redoing it,
- 9:14Speaker 5: and I'm like, nope, yeah, this.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Time they were on the original. This time they were
- 9:19Speaker 1: race car drivers, or this time he runs for president
- 9:24Speaker 1: or something. Yeah, Well, I guess that's it.
