- 0:07The New York Jets faced the Dallas Cowboys at Texas Stadium during week 12 of the 1971 NFL season.
- 0:14The Jets entered the game with a 4-7 record, but the Cowboys, led by head coach Tom Landry, had 8 wins and would later that season win their first Super Bowl,
- 0:23having fallen just short to the Colts in Super Bowl V in the 1970 season.
- 0:28This is a local New York radio broadcast featuring announcers Sam DeLuca and Merle Harmon.
- 0:33The Texas Stadium and Dallas, Texas professional football, the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys.
- 0:43Hello everybody, this is Merle Harmon along with Sam DeLuca and we welcome you to the New York Jets Radio Network,
- 0:49brought to you by Mobile, whose detergent gasoline helps keep your engine running smooth and clean.
- 1:10It's cloudy and overcast in Dallas, it's cool, it's almost cold here in Texas,
- 1:16but a capacity crowd, a standing room only crowd of over 65,000 is jammed into the New Texas Stadium.
- 1:22A beautiful thing to see, to watch the Jets and the Cowboys battle for the first time in regular season competition this afternoon.
- 1:29We'll be back with more about today's game and the starting lineups after this message.
- 1:34Mobile gasoline gets you where you're going, mobile gasoline takes you where you want to be.
- 1:53You know what foul spark plugs can do? They can make your engine waste gasoline and lose power and mileage.
- 2:00But you don't have to worry about foul plugs because Mobile Premium has an anti-fouling agent designed especially for spark plugs.
- 2:09We put it in our premium gasoline to help keep your spark plugs from fouling.
- 2:13So use Mobile Premium gasoline, it can help your car's performance.
- 2:20Mobile gasoline takes you where you want to be.
- 2:30The New York Jets will wear green jerseys this afternoon, which is actually their home uniform.
- 2:34The Dallas Cowboys will be in white.
- 2:36The Jets are now coming on the field and we'll pause briefly for station identification on the Jet Set Network.
- 2:43WTRY-FM in Albany.
- 2:52And now from Big D, here's the former captain of the New York Jets, Sam DeLuca.
- 2:57Thank you, Murrow, and it certainly is a beautiful stadium here in Dallas.
- 3:00And everybody knows that the Dallas Cowboys have a fine football team to go along with it.
- 3:05They're number one in the National Football Conference on offense and also number one in passing.
- 3:10And the defense has been the toughest to run against, allowing only 78.4 yards a game.
- 3:16They've trapped the quarterback 35 times and they've come up with 19 interceptions.
- 3:21The Jets are going to have a tough time running against this ball club.
- 3:24And I think perhaps the key today, Murrow, is the pass protection that they could give Joe Namath.
- 3:30If they give Joe Namath pass protection, he should be able to cut out that defensive secondary.
- 3:35The Dallas Cowboys have won the toss they've elected to receive and we'll be back with the kickoff and the lineup for today's game in just one minute.
- 3:45To everything that turns, turns, turns, there is a season that turns, turns, turns, and it's time to every purpose, to art, to devil.
- 4:05A time to lose, a time to rent, a time to throw, a time for love, a time for hate, a time for peace.
- 4:18I swear it's not too late.
- 4:21Listen, the words are from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible.
- 4:25These days more and more people are taking words and ideas from the Bible and turning them into music.
- 4:32Music that says something about love and peace.
- 4:36Music that makes us think about things.
- 4:38Read the Bible.
- 4:40Find out where all the music is coming from.
- 4:42National Bible Recomended.
- 4:44Intermediate.
- 4:48Well, the Cowboys will start the offensive unit this afternoon.
- 4:52And Roger Selbock gets a tremendous hand as he moves to the sideline.
- 4:56And Calvin Hill just got a big ovation.
- 4:58He'll be starting his first game, he's been out since the third game of the season, so he'll be starting his first game in quite a while.
- 5:04By the way, today's game has been selected for broadcast live over the Armed Forces Radio Network to more than 350 overseas affiliates.
- 5:13So from Vietnam, all around the globe, football fans are going to be listening to this ball game.
- 5:20And our best wishes to you from Texas Stadium in Dallas.
- 5:24Now, the starting lineup for the Cowboys.
- 5:26The wide receivers will be Bob Hayes, a seven-year veteran from Florida A&M, and Lance Alworth in his tenth year out of Arkansas, but his first year with Dallas.
- 5:33The tackles, Tony Lisio, will be on the left side, and Rayfield Wright on the right side.
- 5:39Lisio is back. You know, he was traded to San Diego during the offseason, and the deal that brought Alworth back to, or rather to Dallas.
- 5:47And now Lisio is back with the Cowboys, being obtained not too long ago from San Diego.
- 5:54So he'll be a left tackle, an eight-year veteran from Tulsa, Rayfield Wright on the right side in his fifth year out of Fort Valley State.
- 6:00John Nylen and Blaine Nye will be the guards. Nylen in his sixth year from Iowa.
- 6:04Nye out of Stanford University in his fourth season with the Cowboys.
- 6:07And at center, the veteran Dave Manders in his seventh year out of Michigan State.
- 6:11Billy Truax will be the tight end, and of course you remember Billy Truax with the Los Angeles Rams for so many years.
- 6:18He's in his eighth year out of LSU.
- 6:20Now the backfield. Roger Starbuck will be at quarterback in his third year from Navy.
- 6:26And he has won the job from Craig Morton. You know, for a while, head coach Tom Landry was using the dual quarterback system, even switching after each play.
- 6:33Now it's Starbuck's job. The running backs will be Dwayne Thomas in his second year from West Texas State, and Calvin Hill in his third year from Yale.
- 6:42So that's how the Cowboys will stack up, and now let's look at the Jets defensive alignment.
- 6:47The front four that will face the Cowboy attack. Jerry Philbin at left end from Buffalo University in his eighth year.
- 6:53John Little out of Oklahoma State in his second year at left tackle.
- 6:56Chuck Hinden in his eighth year from North Carolina College at right tackle.
- 7:00Mark Loomis out of Northern Arizona, a second year man at right end.
- 7:05The linebacking corps and the Jets today will probably use four linebackers most of the time.
- 7:10Occasionally they'll switch to three and go to five defensive backs, but we'll give you the three normal starting linebackers.
- 7:16Ralph Baker from Penn State in his eighth year on the left side.
- 7:19Al Atkinson in the middle in his seventh year out of Villanova.
- 7:22Larry Grantham on the right side, his twelfth year from the University of Mississippi.
- 7:27And we'll give you the deep backs in just a moment.
- 7:32But right now, from Texas Stadium, the color guard has moved out onto the field.
- 7:40And to our service personnel listening in all over the world, we salute you with our national anthem.
- 7:47The Star Spangled Banner plays.
- 8:17The Star Spangled Banner plays.
- 8:41The Star Spangled Banner plays.
- 9:01The Jets will use a combination of deep backs.
- 9:11They'll be shifting in and out almost after every play.
- 9:14Steve Cannon, second year man from Florida, will be in one cornerback.
- 9:18Early Thomas, second year man from Colorado State at the other cornerback for the Jets.
- 9:22And the deep backs will be Gus Holliman in his fourth year from Houston.
- 9:26And W.K. Hicks in his eighth year from Texas Southern.
- 9:29Now you'll also see Phil Wise, a rookie from Nebraska-Omaha, in there quite often.
- 9:34And Paul Crane, a linebacker from Alabama, will become a fourth linebacker.
- 9:38John Ebersole will also be in there.
- 9:40We'll try to keep up with all the switches on the defense.
- 9:43Ike Thomas and Cliff Harris are deep for Dallas as Bobby Howfield is ready to kick off.
- 9:48Here comes the football. It's going to Thomas' side.
- 9:51Right on the goal line. He's up to the 5 now to the turns of 15 and 20.
- 9:59He's all the way away.
- 10:03100-yard touchdown for Ike Thomas.
- 10:19Ike Thomas, who ran one back on the opening kickoff against Los Angeles last week,
- 10:27just ran one back 100 yards against the Jets, and Dallas leads 6-0.
- 10:35Now for the extra point try. Dan Reeves is in to hold.
- 10:39And the kicker is Mike Clark.
- 10:42Here's the snap. The kick is good. And just like that, there's time out on the field and the score.
- 10:48The Dallas Cowboys 7, the New York Jets nothing.
- 10:53Mo-Mo gasoline, take you where you're going.
- 11:00Mo-Mo gasoline, take you where you want to be.
- 11:11If you haven't been using a good detergent gasoline like Mo-Mo,
- 11:14there is a possibility that your car is suffering from a dirty carburetor, PCV valve, or oil screen.
- 11:20Well, as soon as you start using mobile detergent gasoline,
- 11:23you're on your way to cleaning up these vital engine parts.
- 11:26When it comes to important things like mileage and power and all around smooth operation,
- 11:32you can count on mobile. So use mobile detergent gasoline. It can help your car's performance.
- 11:38Mo-Mo gasoline, take you where you want to be.
- 11:46Mo-Mo gasoline.
- 11:54Mike Clark is kicking off for Dallas. It's a short kick. Take him up.
- 11:57Ferris Abel is on the 12ies to the 20, 25, to the 30, and knocked back to the 29.
- 12:03Ferris Abel is a rookie out of Brigham Young, returning a short kick to the 30-yard line of the New York Jets.
- 12:08And it took Dallas 16 seconds to jump in to a 7-0 lead.
- 12:15And officially, it has been confirmed, 101 yards on the kickoff return by Ike Thomas.
- 12:23I don't think anyone touched him.
- 12:27Here come the Jets with Joe Namath at the quarter-by.
- 12:29Wide to the right, Maynard. Wide to the left, Rich Caster. The running backs are John Riggins and Emerson Buza.
- 12:34The Jets are down 7-0. And a handoff going to Riggins. Flags are down. The play is stopped.
- 12:39The left guard, Randy Rastwood, some of the Jets, jumped offside.
- 12:45The starting front line for New York, Rich Caster and Don Maynard.
- 12:49The wide receivers, Caster from Jackson State, a second-year man.
- 12:52Maynard is 13th year out of Texas, El Paso.
- 12:55The guards are Bob Sweas from USC and Winnie Hill from Texas Southern.
- 12:59Randy Rasmussen from Kearney State of Nebraska at left guard.
- 13:03Dave Herman of Michigan State at right guard.
- 13:05At center is John Schmidt out of Hofstra.
- 13:08Joe Namath, Alabama zone, from quarter-by.
- 13:11And the running backs, Emerson Buza from Maryland State. And John Riggins, a fabulous rookie from Kansas.
- 13:16Here we go. Riggins wide to the left. Maynard wide to the right.
- 13:18The 5-yard penalty on the offside has made it first down and 15th from the Jet 25.
- 13:23John Schmidt over the ball. Namath calling the play.
- 13:26Namath gives off to Riggins coming through the middle and he pulls his way to the 28.
- 13:31Brought down by Bill Gregory, the left tackle.
- 13:33And Larry Cole, the defensive left end for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 13:36And that front line for Dallas, Larry Cole from Hawaii at left end.
- 13:40Bill Gregory, number one draft choice for the Cowboys from Wisconsin, a rookie at left tackle.
- 13:45Bob Lilly, everybody's all pro.
- 13:47An 11-year veteran from TCU at right tackle.
- 13:49And George Andre, a 10-year veteran from Marquette at right end.
- 13:53The Jets break the huddle.
- 13:55Castor going to the left. Don Maynard coming wide to the right.
- 13:58Pete Lamont to tight end to set up on the left side for the yard.
- 14:00It'll be second down and 12 yards to go for the Jets.
- 14:02The running backs break out of the eye, go into a split.
- 14:05And the handoff goes to Riggins. Riggins bangs into the right side, pulling over tocklers and gets out to the 36.
- 14:11Cliff Harris from the secondary finally brought him down.
- 14:14The big Kansas halfback running for almost eight.
- 14:17So now it'll be third down and about four yards to go for the York.
- 14:22The deep backs, well, let's get the linebackers first of all for the Cowboys.
- 14:26Dave Edwards from Auburn at the left side.
- 14:29Leroy Jordan from Alabama in the middle.
- 14:31Chuck Colley, all pro on the right side for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 14:34And the deep backs, Herb Adderley and Mel Rinpro.
- 14:37Cornell Green and Cliff Harrison, here we go.
- 14:39Third down, a short four for the York.
- 14:41Namath calling the play. He stayed on the ground.
- 14:43Namath on a pitch to Riggins. Riggins trying to go wide.
- 14:46Riggins gets the block, but he can't get to what he really needs.
- 14:49He's thrown on the 35.
- 14:50Leroy Jordan, the middle linebacker, the Cowboys, stops the play and the Jets will have to give up the football.
- 14:56They lose about a yard and a half and it'll be fourth down and five from the New York 35.
- 15:01Dallas has a very active front four and of course three extremely active linebackers.
- 15:06The linebackers are small according to pro standards, but coupled with that front four, they've got great speed, agility and mobility.
- 15:13Very tough to sweep on.
- 15:16Back to kicker Steve O'Neill.
- 15:17Charlie Waters and Cliff Harris are deep for Dallas.
- 15:20O'Neill puts the ball in the air. It's a good one.
- 15:22Drives it downfield. It's going to be taken on the 26 yard line and grabbed by Harris.
- 15:26And the flag goes down as Harris comes out to the 39 where he has dumped hard at the 39 yard line.
- 15:33And the tackler was Gus Holliman, I believe. A 38 yard kick.
- 15:39Let's see what the flag's about.
- 15:41The ball was thrown back at the Dallas 27 yard line and apparently the Cowboys are going to be hit with a clipping penalty.
- 15:49Personal foul Dallas. Nope, hands.
- 15:52So Dallas is holding.
- 15:55Now the Norm Schachter, the referee, lines it up.
- 15:58Here comes the walk off against the Cowboys.
- 16:00The ball goes back to the Dallas 10 or 15, I beg your pardon.
- 16:06The ball to the Dallas. No, they're going to walk off some more now.
- 16:11The ball is put down on the 14. Norm Schachter has started back to the 10 yard line.
- 16:16And Dallas holding on the punt return.
- 16:19So the Cowboys take the ball out of the huddle they come. Roger Staubach, the quarterback.
- 16:23He's sending Lance Alworth wide to the left in the slot to the left is Bob Hayes.
- 16:27The running backs are Hill and Thomas. They split wide out of the eye.
- 16:30Now the wide receivers switch and Alworth goes in motion to the right coming out of the slot.
- 16:35Staubach got a handoff to Dwayne Thomas and he hits to the 15 yard line and down he goes.
- 16:40Mark Blomis and Chuck Hedden make the stop for the New York Jets.
- 16:43The right end and the right tackle and the game is short.
- 16:46One yard. It'll be second down and nine and the Cowboys are going to make a switch.
- 16:51Well Murl, on that one play Dallas showed three different offensive formations.
- 16:56And of course they used that multiple offense and you'll see just about everything from the Dallas offense.
- 17:02The eye formation, people in motion, the slot, just about everything else.
- 17:07Coach Tom Landry switches his tight ends to send in plays.
- 17:11Right now it's a slot left. Here's Alworth in the slot going in motion to the right side.
- 17:15And Staubach goes back to pass for the first time. The rush is on.
- 17:18They set the screen and complete the Calvin Hill at the 15. Hill with a 20. Hill with a 25.
- 17:23Hill gets near the 30 yard line and bounces out across the 30 with Blayne Nye the right guard.
- 17:28And in front of the blockers on the screen and finally John Ibersol makes the tackle for the New York Jets.
- 17:34And the ball will be spotted on the Dallas 30. So a gain of 15 yards and a first down on the screen.
- 17:40And Mike Ditka has come in for Billy Truex as the tight end for the Cowboys.
- 17:45Who lead by a score of 7 to nothing. We have 10 minutes and 55 seconds left to play in the first quarter.
- 17:51Here at the beautiful U Texas Stadium in Dallas.
- 17:54By the way the kickoff return by Ike Thomas who played his college ball right here in Dallas.
- 18:02Needless to say he was appreciated by this partial crowd.
- 18:05Here's a pitch coming back to Calvin Hill. He was almost tripped up. Regains his balance.
- 18:10Crosses the 30. Gets to the 34. WK Hicks from the secondary is up to help make the tackle.
- 18:15Along with Mark Lomas the right end.
- 18:18So Calvin Hill moves the ball near the 35 yard line where it becomes second down and sixth.
- 18:25I don't think there's any doubt that Calvin Hill is a better running back than Walt Garrison.
- 18:30However Garrison has been starting for the Cowboys. He would be starting today if it weren't for an injury.
- 18:36He does everything well. He blocks, he catches the ball and he's a pretty good runner himself.
- 18:41Now Dallas sets up at a wishbone tee and bounces back out of that end to an eye with wide receivers going to both sides.
- 18:47Second down call for Roger Staubach.
- 18:50And the former Navy quarterback gives off to Duane Thomas who bangs into the right side of the line to the 45 to midfield and down to the 48 yard line of New York.
- 18:59Almost a 47 yard line.
- 19:05John Dockery finally making the tackle after an 18 yard pick up by Duane Thomas who was the number one draft choice of the Cowboys last year.
- 19:13Right now the Jets have four linebackers in.
- 19:17John Embersole has replaced Al Atkinson. Larry Grantham is on the right side. Then there's Rob Baker and Paul Crane.
- 19:24Wide to the right, Alworth. Wide to the left side, Bob Hayes. First down of the Jet 48 yard line. The Cowboys lead 7-0.
- 19:30The Cowboys with wide receivers out to both sides. Staubach fakes the pitch, drops back to throw.
- 19:36He is throwing to Ditka the tight end. He's got the ball over 30 and he is out of bounds.
- 19:4127.
- 19:44Like Ditka the tight end, the former Chicago Bear and Pittsburgh star takes the ball down to the 27 yard line of the Jets and another first down for the Cowboys.
- 19:53And that one was right on target. Staubach has been throwing to his tight end and his setbacks more than to his wide receivers.
- 20:00And of course he has those great wide receivers in Bob Hayes and Lance Alworth who came from San Diego.
- 20:07However he does throw a great deal to his backs. Walt Garrison is the third in the National Football Conference, third ranked in receptions with 39.
- 20:16Now the Cowboys who use the multiple offense, the multiple sets, bring Alworth in motion to the left out of the eye.
- 20:23Here is Staubach, a handoff to Dwayne Thomas. Dwayne Thomas right to the middle is going no place. Stops by Lomas, by Hinton, by Little.
- 20:31And Phil Wise is up in the secondary. They've spot the ball at the 27 again of about one. It will be second down to nine.
- 20:39By the way, Isaac Thomas 101 yard touchdown return of the kickoff ties the Cowboy Club record set by Amos Marsh back in 1962 against Philadelphia.
- 20:49And we mentioned Thomas also ran one back 89 yards against the Rams on Thanksgiving Day. That was the opening kickoff.
- 20:56So Mr. Thomas has been giving the Cowboys a quick lead. Bob Hayes to the right, Alworth to the left. The running backs are split.
- 21:03Hill now going in motion out to the right. Here's a fake pitch and a pass off to Hill in the right flat.
- 21:08Hill down to 25 to the 21st. The fan touchdown! Calvin Hill! Wayfield right to right tackle. Gave the key block.
- 21:17Roger Saabach faking a pitch to Dwayne Thomas. He jumped in the air through to Calvin Hill in the right flat.
- 21:26The Jets took the fake to the left side and Hill went down the right lane for a touchdown.
- 21:3147 yards and the Cowboys have put two touchdowns on the scoreboard here in the first quarter.
- 21:377 plays for 86 yards. Mike Clark for the extra point try. Dan Rees will hold.
- 21:49Here's the snap and the kick is good. There's a timeout on the field and the score, the Dallas Cowboys 14 to the New York Jets nothing.
- 22:00Well that was fast. Well let's take a look at the offensive line for the Dallas Cowboys. They did a great job on that drive and opening up holes in the Jet defensive line.
- 22:11At right tackle they have Rayfield Wright who stands 6'6", weighs 255 pounds. He's now been around for five years and he's a good one.
- 22:19At right guard Blaine Nye, 6'4", 251. He's a four season man with a lot of football in front of him.
- 22:26Big, strong and quick, does a good job on the running game. At center Dave Manders, 6'2", 250.
- 22:32He's in his seventh year and he still hustles down here in Dallas. They like him very much, strong, quick and smart.
- 22:39At left guard John Nyland, 6'3", 248. The people in Dallas say that he's the best pulling guard in football.
- 22:46And of course at left tackle starting today Tony Licio, 6'5", 255 pounds.
- 22:51Now in his eighth year was traded to San Diego for Lance Alworth, quit football, was retired and came back when Landry needed him.
- 23:03Dallas leads by 14-0. We have 8 minutes and 13 seconds left to play in the first quarter.
- 23:09Now this multiple offensive Dallas certainly looked good and Starbuck is using it extremely well.
- 23:14On that last play, the touchdown play, he lined up in a tight formation. He had two tight ends. Threw that ball out to the one wide receiver who went in on the screen play for a touchdown.
- 23:26Mike Clark's kickoff is taken by Vernon Stutter on the two. He flips and falls as he tried to make his cut near the 17 yard line.
- 23:33Charlie Waters covered it immediately. Vernon Stutter, the rookie out of Mississippi, returning the kickoff by Mike Clark.
- 23:39And the ball is put down near the 18 yard line. That's where the Jets will start moving from.
- 23:44Well the pressure is really on the Cowboys today as they are out to keep the edge over the Washington Redskins in the Eastern Division of the NFC.
- 23:55Dallas has won four straight games going into this one today. Wide to the right, Don Maynard. Split to the right, Pete Lamond.
- 24:04Wide to the left, Rich Caster. Namath back to pass on first down. Joe Willie looking. He's throwing long for Rich Caster. It's incomplete.
- 24:11Near midfield. He was double covered by Mel Rincroll and by Cliff Harris. It'll be second and 10 from the Jet. 18.
- 24:20Now I said before the key I think, well of course now with 14 points on the board the situation changes.
- 24:26In fact it becomes even more imperative for the Jet offensive line to give Joe Namath good pass protection.
- 24:33I thought that would be the key to today's game. And Randy Rasmussen who went offside the very first play of the game is really a main key in that offensive line because he's got Bob Lilly.
- 24:45And that's probably why he did go offside the very first play of the game. When you're playing against Lilly you're aware of it.
- 24:51And by the way Lilly has never missed a game for Dallas and he's been at it a long time. Wide receivers out both ways.
- 24:57He's got to beat Lamans a tight end split to the right. Namath back to pass the rushes on. Joe in the pocket throwing for Caster incomplete.
- 25:03He was covered by Mel Rincroll. That ball was thrown up to the 43 yard line of the Jet to the third down and 10 on the Jet 18.
- 25:11By the way Sam today we're a little early but we'd like to wish a happy birthday to Otto Graham who is believe it or not reaching number 50 on December 6.
- 25:24You did some work with him. That's right. Otto was with us the first two years on the Jets broadcast.
- 25:30And I hope Otto is listening in this afternoon up in Connecticut. So a happy birthday from all the Jets to Otto Graham.
- 25:38Wide to the left. Caster wide to the right. Maynard. Jets behind 14 to nothing. Namath back to pass.
- 25:45They're after him. He throws for Maynard. There he is. 35 yard line and pucks out of bounds in the 38.
- 25:50By Herb Adderley the former Green Bay Packer. But Don Maynard who is near a milestone in his career in catching passes.
- 26:00Pulls the first one in for a gain to the 38. So about 20 on that one. And the Jets have their first burst down to the afternoon.
- 26:12The Jets in the green this afternoon trailing by two touchdowns. Break the huddle. John Schmidt is out over the ball.
- 26:18Caster going to the left. Don Maynard wide to the right. Joe Namath at quarterback.
- 26:22It is first start but his second appearance is coming off the injured list. The running backs are split wide.
- 26:28Namath on a handoff to Riggins. Riggins coming to the right side. Really gets pucked on the 40 by Leroy Jordan the middle linebacker.
- 26:34And believe it or not Leroy Jordan picked up that 237 pound. John Riggins took him right up in the air and dumped him backwards.
- 26:42The ball will be set on the 40. A gain of two. It will be second and eight for New York.
- 26:48They say these linebackers are small and of course they are small according to today's standards.
- 26:53And many feel that perhaps Jordan and Howley and so on couldn't make a pro team if they started as rookies today.
- 27:01But believe me they work extremely well together and you can see what a guy can do even with only 225 pounds.
- 27:08With a big running back like Riggins on that last play. Just picked him up and drove him back.
- 27:12Namath back to pass in the pocket. Namath throwing. Gets snowed under. He throws to Castor incomplete down on the 40 yard line.
- 27:18A big rush put on by Pat Toomey who was in it right in for Dallas. And Namath got hit pretty good back on the 30.
- 27:25The pass is intended for Castor. Felt incomplete. Third down and eighth on the New York 40.
- 27:30We mentioned the milestone that Don Maynard is reaching. He has now caught 599 passes in his career with that first reception.
- 27:40Right now Namath is one out of four for 20 yards. It will be third down and eighth on the Jet 40.
- 27:46The Jets are trailing 14 to nothing. Castor going wide to the left and Maynard to the right.
- 27:50Pete Lamont just tied in to split to the left by seven yards. Namath back to pass on third and eighth.
- 27:55Joe looking for Maynard. In the center of the 40 yard line. Don Maynard slips as he tried to cut for that pass.
- 28:13It was a little bit behind him. But it was picked off by Herb Adderley.
- 28:20And returned down to the 28 where they're going to mark it in jet territory and Dallas has the football.
- 28:26And there's a timeout on the field in the store. The Cowboys 14 and the Jets nothing.
- 28:31Mobile gasoline gets you where you're going. Mobile gasoline takes you where you want to be.
- 28:53Dirt deposits can build up in your carburetor. And a dirty carburetor could mean trouble.
- 28:59But you don't have to worry about a dirty carburetor because even if you do have a dirty one, we can help.
- 29:06With mobile detergent gasoline. Because the detergent in mobile cleans your carburetor as you drive.
- 29:14So use mobile detergent gasoline. It can help your car's performance.
- 29:19Mobile gasoline takes you where you want to be. Where you want to be.
- 29:34From Texas Stadium in Dallas. Merle Herman along with Sam DeLuca.
- 29:39Right now we pause briefly for station identification. Your dial is jet set.
- 29:47WTRY FM in Albany.
- 29:54Dallas has the football with a jet 28. Roger Staubach at quarterback splits the running back.
- 29:58Springs Alworth in the slot left with Hayes wide. Now Alworth going in motion to the right.
- 30:03Staubach barks the play and he fakes a handoff to Wayne Thomas.
- 30:06Staubach drops back to throw.
- 30:1728 yard line.
- 30:19Calvin Hill coming out of the backfield wide open. Nobody even close to him.
- 30:23Officially put the 7 yards in a touchdown.
- 30:29Staubach has laid it up there and damn it would appear that bringing that slot man in motion the other way is giving the Jets a lot of grief.
- 30:37John Dockery left with the man in motion. He went clear over to the other side of the field.
- 30:44And of course the corner linebacker on this side should have been covering the setback coming out on the flat fast.
- 30:50Extra point was good.
- 30:53Well Dallas-Dallies 21-0 and we're still in the first quarter in 6 minutes and 28 seconds left to play in the first period.
- 31:01Here at Texas Stadium in Dallas.
- 31:03This is the first regular meeting between the Jets and the Cowboys in two previous preseason games.
- 31:08The Cowboys won in 1969 25-9 and the Jets won last year 29-21.
- 31:14In that first game Namath did not play. Last year he did play.
- 31:18And in three quarters he turned out a 21 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns against the Cowboys.
- 31:24But so far the Cowboys are turning this game into a round in the first quarter.
- 31:28Leading 21-0 with 6 minutes and 28 seconds left to play.
- 31:33And Roger Staubach certainly looks impressive. He's been playing good football Merrill.
- 31:37He started four games for the Cowboys since Tom Landry decided to stop alternating quarterbacks for a while.
- 31:43He was alternating Morton and Staubach. In those four games Dallas has won all four.
- 31:49He hasn't thrown an interception. Roger Staubach hasn't.
- 31:53He's completed 53 of 94 for 702 yards and of course he's done a great deal of damage on his own by running the football.
- 32:00He scrambles out of the pocket. There hasn't been a need to scramble today.
- 32:04He's had people open downfield. He's been throwing the ball well.
- 32:08Prior to this he scrambled or he left the pocket 24 times. Picked up 232 yards for a 9.7 average.
- 32:16Mike Clark's kickoff is again short. It's going to be taken by Ferris Obelisk at about the 12. He goes to the 20-25.
- 32:22Oh he foremolds it faster. Being chased by the Cowboys.
- 32:25And the coverage is by the Cowboys out around the 15 yard line.
- 32:29And the Cowboys again have the football.
- 32:32Claxton Welch made the recovery as Ferris Obelisk really got hit on the 20.
- 32:38The ball pucks out of his hands back near the 15. It was recovered on the 16 by Claxton Welch of Dallas.
- 32:45And the Cowboys have another scoring opportunity here in the first quarter.
- 32:52D.D. Lewis was the man who really bowled it. Chris Ferris Obelisk.
- 32:57And I mean it was a shot.
- 33:00The Cowboys out of the huddle. They come out in a power eye.
- 33:05And they shift out of the power eye with wide receivers to both sides into a straight eye.
- 33:10Staubach on the give to Dwayne Thomas. He's hit on the handoff. Gets to the line of scrimmage and picks up a half yard possibly.
- 33:17John Little, the left tackle of the Jets makes the stop. In fact they put it down right on the 16. No game.
- 33:24Second down and 10 yards to go over the Cowboys. Billy Truax comes in a tight end.
- 33:28Mike Ditka goes out. They're the messenger boys for Coach Tom Landry of the Cowboys.
- 33:35We have five minutes and 28 seconds left to play in the first quarter. The Cowboys are leading 21 to nothing.
- 33:42Second and 10. Roger Staubach running a long huddle.
- 33:46Now breaks the Cowboys out of it sending Bob Hayes wide to the left. Allworth wide to the right.
- 33:51Shuts up for the eye formation. Breaks out of the eye. The running backs are split by five yards. And Staubach a handoff to Calvin Hill.
- 33:58Power sweep to the right. He'll hit a 10. He'll hit a 6.
- 34:04Calvin Hill all the way down to the six yard line. Brought down by Steve Tannen and by Larry Grantham.
- 34:08And Blaine Nye, the right guard, leading the blocking on that sweep right.
- 34:14Must get much credit for the success of that play which gained about nine yards, almost 10 yards in fact.
- 34:22Short yardage, third down.
- 34:28Here is Ditka coming in. Truax is coming in. Hayes goes out. That'll give Dallas a pair of tight ends.
- 34:34They're showing second down.
- 34:41This is the third down, Sam. Did the first play gain nothing?
- 34:45Third down. Yeah, now they switch it to third down. Okay.
- 34:49Allworth on the wing to the left. Hayes bust out of that now. Allworth going wide to the left. The running backs are split.
- 34:56Allworth is a flanker. Here is Staubach on a quarterback draw. And he is across the five down to the four.
- 35:02Mark Loomis makes the stop with John Little helping.
- 35:06And it's the first down and goal to go near the three yard line for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 35:12That was Dallas' first third down play of the ballgame of the way. WKHix is out. John Mooring is in. He'll play the middle guard now for the Jets defensively.
- 35:21First down and goal. Staubach, I don't know, I don't think it was a draw, but it looks somewhat like the quarterback draw where he drops back and then takes it up the middle himself.
- 35:36Instead of dropping back, he just faked to the side as if he was going to hand off to the setback on that side going into the line and took it over himself.
- 35:45Staubach, Duane Thomas, touchdown off his own right guard. And the Cowboys have scored their fourth touchdown in the first quarter.
- 35:53Blaine Nye is a four-year man from Stanford opening the hole for Duane Thomas who is crashing in from the three.
- 36:00And Dallas has jumped in front now 26 to nothing. 27 to nothing. Took one away from him. Mike Clark will now try to make it 28. Reaves holding the snap. The kick is good.
- 36:22And would you believe the Dallas Cowboys are leading the Jets by four touchdowns in the first quarter with three minutes and 14 seconds left to play in the first period in Dallas.
- 36:33I don't think the Jets have done anything right yet. The game is very much reminiscent of the opening game in Baltimore when the Jets looked so bad and the Baltimore Colts just ran up and down the field on them.
- 36:46The Baltimore team ran a great deal against the Jets and I would have said that was probably the weakness of that Jet team today, the defensive line.
- 36:54And much would be determined as to whether they could stop this Dallas running attack. But so far the Cowboys have done it both on the ground and through the air.
- 37:03Staubach has looked good.
- 37:07Here's Mike Clark to kick off a high end over ender again short take of a Ferris Oval at this time of the eighth to the 15th to the 20th. Ferris Oval is 25, spins and goes down to the 30 yard line.
- 37:19And the tackler is Charlie Waters of the Cowboys.
- 37:25So first and 10 for the Jets on the Jet 30 and Bob Davis is coming in at quarterback for New York.
- 37:36So with the Jets down by four touchdowns in the first quarter.
- 37:40I don't think Joe Namath was shaken up. I think four touchdowns down. Weebubank is not going to take any chances right now. Why to the left caster? Why to the right mainer?
- 37:49The crowd wants to see Namath. They're looking at Bob Davis from Virginia. Davis calls the play goes back to pass on first down. The rush is on Davis.
- 37:58Davis throwing the screen to Boozer on the 30, 35. Flag is down. He's out of bounds in the 39 yard line. David Edwards the left linebacker took him out of bounds and the flag is thrown and in that area it usually indicates a clip.
- 38:13All right. The Jets are hit with a penalty but it is not a clipping sign.
- 38:25From, well wait a minute. They're starting from the 30. They'll go to the 15. The 15 yard penalty against the Jets.
- 38:38Well I think they're consistent anyway Merle. They still haven't done anything right. Namath probably was taken out aside from the fact that they have four touchdowns behind with only 237 remaining because that field is wet and slippery.
- 38:51There has been some evidence of people falling and slipping. Perhaps weep doesn't want to take a chance with those bad knees.
- 38:57The Jets apparently had an illegal receiver downfield. Here's a handoff to Boozer. A straight handoff. He bangs across the 20. Goes to the 27 for a gain of seven. I beg your pardon to the 22 for a gain of seven.
- 39:10So out of a first and 25 the Jets will have a second down and 18. Jordan and Andre made the stop for the Cowboys. Larry Cole at left end. Bill Gregory at left tackle. Bob Luley at right tackle and George Andre as the right end.
- 39:26Three solid veterans and a rookie up front for Dallas. Wide to the left caster. To the right is Maynard. Bob Davis drops back to throw. Throws for caster. Makes a diving catch and then drops the ball.
- 39:37What about the 27? Now the Jets are third down and 18 coming up. Bob Davis out of Neptune, New Jersey. 26 years old and his fifth year out of the University of Virginia.
- 39:53Quarterback the Jets along with Al Woodall during the absence this year of Joe Namath. Now the Cowboys doing some switching. Pat Toomey has come in at right end and George Andre goes out.
- 40:08Toedie Smith is now the left end of the defensive unit for Dallas and the Cowboys are leading 28 to nothing in the first period. Bob Davis at quarterback for New York. John Spitt is over the ball. Davis barks the play. Davis takes the snap, drops back to pass.
- 40:24He's looking, he is throwing for caster and the ball tipped away at midfield by Mel Rinpro. Great play by Mel Rinpro because it looked like the pass was right on target and Rinpro went flying through the air to get a hand on the ball to bat it away.
- 40:38And the Jets will have to give it up. A minute 54 seconds left to play in the first period with the Cowboys leading 28 to nothing and Steve O'Deil from Texas A&M has ended the putting.
- 40:50Bob Harris and Charlie Waters go deep for the Cowboys. Here's the snap. O'Deil puts his foot in the ball, drives it down, field a good one. It's going to be fielded on the 31 yard line, taken by Harris.
- 41:03O'Deil has an open pocket of a 40-45, looks down to a 40 yard line of the yard, puts his head down to a down about as he is hit by O'Deil the last man. O'Deil got him out of bounds on the 34 yard line of the Jets. And if there's one thing that's really hurt the Jets today, it's been defensing the returns.
- 41:22Now they're supposed to keep a relative distance coming down the field, converge on the ball and maintain a relative distance. If one guy gets knocked down they're supposed to go ahead and compensate by everyone else moving in and they're just not doing it.
- 41:37They're spread out too far. One guy is getting knocked out of the play that gives the ball carrier a hole and he's taking off.
- 41:44Now the Cowboys with a ball of a Jet 34 after a 47 yard kick by O'Neill but the return wiped it out. Here is Staubach and a handoff to Calvin Hill. He puts his head down, rams his way into the middle and then meets Ralph Baker head on.
- 41:56The left linebacker who stops him at about the 33. A gain of a yard or so. Gus Holliman is coming into the secondary. And Paul Crane goes out. Now we'll try to set the Jets defensive backfield for you.
- 42:10Which includes early Thomas WKX, Gus Holliman and John Dockery. And the linebackers are Ralph Baker, John Ebersole and Larry Grantham.
- 42:22Out of the huddle come the Cowboys. Lance Alworth going wide to the right. In the slot to the right is Bob Hayes. Second down nine the call for Staubach and the Dallas Cowboys.
- 42:33Staubach fakes the handoff, goes back to throw, throws over the middle of the side in. Great catch by Truax but the ball is shaken loose by WKX as Truax is going to the ground.
- 42:45Incomplete pass stops the clock with 53 seconds left to play in the first quarter. The Cowboys lead 28 to nothing. Bill Wise comes in for New York and John Ebersole goes out.
- 42:57The first pass that is not connected for Staubach. He's three out of four for 59 yards and three touchdowns in the first period.
- 43:06So the Cowboys on top 28 to nothing have a third down and nine coming at the Jets. 33. 53 seconds remaining in the first period.
- 43:17Lance Alworth going wide to the right. Bob Hayes wide to the left. Calvin Hill sets up in the slot left on the wing.
- 43:23Now Hill backs up to become a setback along with now he goes in motion to the right. The Cowboys are always doing something. That leaves Dwayne Thomas back to pass.
- 43:31Staubach. Staubach is bound under at the 42 yard line. The Jets had a rush with Philbin leading the charge. Loma's coming from the other side.
- 43:40And Hinton back to front four all smashed in to bring him down. They mark the ball on the 41 yard line of the Jets.
- 43:47And that'll bring on Mike Clark the field goal kicker who will try one from somewhere around the 46 47. 49 seconds left to play in the first quarter.
- 43:57Chris Peresopoulos will drop back for New York. Remember the misses can be run out this year. So Mike Clark will go from the 47.
- 44:08Now Dan Reeves who will hold moving a little closer to the 48. So apparently that's where it will be placed down. It is the kick is on the way and it is short into the end zone out of the end zone.
- 44:20The Jets will take over on their own 20. 43 seconds left to play in the first quarter.
- 44:26Dallas jumping to a quick 28 to nothing lead. And you can almost see the handwriting on the wall of the opening kickoff.
- 44:33When I Thomas grabs a ball yard deep in the end zone and ran at 101 yards for a cowboy touchdown.
- 44:41Bob Davis still in quarterback for the Jets. Joe Namath on the sideline with the Jets down by four touchdowns.
- 44:48Wide to the right. Don Maynard wide to the left. Rich Castor running backs are split wide. John Riggins and Emerson Boozer.
- 44:55John Schmidt covers the ball. The guards are Rastroson and Herman. The tackles are Hill and Swayas.
- 45:01Davis a handoff to Riggins. Riggins comes into the right side but somebody missed a block and he runs right into Leroy Jordan who turns it upside down on the 21 yard line.
- 45:10That's the second time Leroy Jordan has met big John Riggins head on and the second time Riggins has been bowled over backwards.
- 45:17Now we're down to 27 seconds in the first quarter and second and 10 coming up for the Jets.
- 45:22You can talk about size all you want but if you get the right position when making a tackle, if you get that ball carrier right above the belt buckle just below the numbers regardless of how big he is you're going to bring him down.
- 45:35That's what they're doing. Wide receivers out both sides for New York. Bob Davis calls it down for the Jets.
- 45:43Davis going back to pass. The rush is on. Lilley trying to get to him. They screen to the right. Riggins is at the 20. Riggins at the 25.
- 45:50He's taking his way and dumped on the 29 yard line by Cliff Harris. It's a gun sound ending the first quarter and the Jets are going to be close to a first down.
- 46:00So there's the end of the first quarter in the score. The Dallas Cowboys 28. The New York Jets nothing. Now let's take a 60 second jet break for this announcement.
- 46:10The second quarter in Dallas. Coming on and the Cowboys lead the Jets 28 to nothing.
- 46:17The Jets have the ball with a third down, less than a yard to go, near the 29 yard line of New York.
- 46:24Merle, the Dallas Cowboys stagger their defensive linemen. If you start at one end he might be up very tight on the ball.
- 46:32The tackle next to him may be a yard and a half or two yards off the ball. The other tackle on the other side of the center is up tight and the other end will lay off the ball.
- 46:41This helps to guard against the running plays. Once the tackles who are off the line of scrimmage read more. They react more to the run.
- 46:49The guy who's up tight is going full speed ahead trying to get that faster.
- 46:54Third down a half yard. Bob Davis calls it. Davis quarterback sneak gets across the 30 and that'll be a first down.
- 47:00So Davis going straight ahead behind John Schmidt. Bob Lilly and George Andre stop the play for New York. The Jets had two tight ends in.
- 47:08They move the ball to the 30 yard line and it's a first down for the Jets. Don Maynard coming back in along with Rich Casher. They'll be out wide as the receivers.
- 47:17Pete Lammon's in a tight end. The running backs will be John Riggins and Emerson Boozer.
- 47:21Of course Merle, in a passing situation, third and long yardage when they're not expecting the run and they're not guarding against the draw play,
- 47:30then all four linemen will get up real tight to the offensive line very close and take off to rush that tackle.
- 47:37The Jets just got their first first down. Bob Davis now throwing to Casher on the 35 yard line and Renfro takes him out of bounds right there.
- 47:45So a game of about five to make it second down. And about five and a half or so. It's a 35 yard line of the Jets.
- 47:55After Ike Thomas ran the opening kickoff back 101 yards, the Cowboys stopped the Jets on their next offensive first.
- 48:09And it really wasn't much of a burst because the Jets had to kick it away on fourth down.
- 48:14And Staubach took the Cowboys 86 yards on seven plays for a second touchdown.
- 48:21Now Davis with Casher to the left, Maynard to the right calls the play. Davis gives off to Riggins.
- 48:26Riggins sees a little daylight to the right side, pulls his way to the 39 yard line where Bill Gregory, the number one draft choice for the Cowboys,
- 48:34number three draft choice rather than the Cowboys, a rookie from Wisconsin, makes the stop.
- 48:40So again the Jets have a short yardage situation coming up on a third down call and Don Maynard is out and Gary Arthur is in.
- 48:48That'll give the Jets too tight end. We've gotten confirmation from the Jets bench. Joe Nemeth is not injured.
- 48:54He's feeling okay. We've just took him out of the ball game. No explanation as to why.
- 48:59I imagine the score and the fact that the field is wet might have something to do with it.
- 49:04Jets go with a power eye. Steve Harky is down as a third setback. Davis on third down and one calls his play.
- 49:11And motion Boozer and a handoff to Harky. Harky bangs into the left side of the line across the 40 to the 42.
- 49:16But he gets the first down for the Jets. Bell Renfro and Cliff Harris stop the play. That's the second first down for New York.
- 49:23Steve Harky, a rookie out of Georgia Tech, who survived, I believe he was, he just barely made the cut, didn't he Sam, this fall.
- 49:34And he's really come on strong. He was the 16th round draft choice for the Jets.
- 49:38Yeah, he's a fine blocker, an excellent blocker. That's what he did at Georgia Tech. He was primarily a blocking back.
- 49:44He ran the ball very few times in his college career. We like that.
- 49:48Caster to the left, made it to the right. The running backs are in close.
- 49:51Riggins and Boozer and a fake handoff to Riggins. Davis back to throw. Davis throwing long for Emerson Boozer.
- 49:57And Bell Renfro, a building interception in the 15 yard line of the Jets.
- 50:01Bell Renfro, an over the shoulder interception, made it die for the ball.
- 50:06And the Cowboys have it on the Jets. On their own 15 round out.
- 50:13They have the ball, their own 15 yard line after the interception by Bell Renfro.
- 50:18Yeah, the guy who caught the ball was led perfectly. It was a perfectly thrown pass right to Bell Renfro.
- 50:25And he overthrew the Jet receiver, Emerson Boozer, who was going up the sideline.
- 50:30But it was perfect as far as Renfro was concerned, right in his hands.
- 50:34All right, we have a timeout on the field now. And the score of the Dallas Cowboys 28 for the York Jets, nothing.
- 50:44Well, the National Football Conference has clinched the 40 game interconference series with the American Football Conference for the second straight season.
- 50:53Detroit's 32 to 21 victory over Kansas City on Thanksgiving Day assured the NFC of a tie.
- 51:00And then of course San Francisco's 24 to 21 win over the Jets last Sunday at Chase Stadium.
- 51:06That was the NFC's 20th victory. So the way it stacks up right now, the teams in the National Football Conference have won 20.
- 51:15The AFC teams have won nine and there have been two ties. Nine games remain to be played in the final three weeks of the NFL season.
- 51:23And last year of course the NFC won the series once again. That year they won 27, they lost 12, and they tied one.
- 51:44Well, the Cowboys take over their own 15-yard line. And the Jets defensive unit is on again.
- 51:50With Phil the Little, Hinton and Lomas up front. Paul Crane, Rob Baker, John Ebersole, Larry Grantham are in as linebackers.
- 51:58Here come the Cowboys. In a power eye they run out of it. A handoff going to Calvin Hill.
- 52:03He bangs into the left side of the line on a slant and is brought down by Chuck Hinton after about a three, possibly a four-yard gain as they unpile now the 19.
- 52:12A three-yard gain of four. And second and six coming on for Dallas as Billy Truax comes on and Mike Ditka goes off for the Cowboys as the plays are brought in by the Messengers from Coach Tom Landry.
- 52:25By the way, Tom Landry has been the only coach the Cowboys have ever had.
- 52:29And at the American Football Conference, Hank Stram of Kansas City has been the only coach Kansas City has ever had.
- 52:36And that includes the years when the Chiefs were the Dallas Texans.
- 52:40Cowboys with two wide receivers out and a slot to the left now with Duane Thomas that leaves Hill.
- 52:46Hill takes a handoff, bangs into the left side of the line again for a couple.
- 52:50Mark Lomas the right end from Northern Arizona and Jerry Pilbin out of Buffalo make the stop for the Jets.
- 52:57And it's third down coming up for Dallas. And again Mike Ditka comes in and Billy Truax goes out and the Jets are going to make some switches.
- 53:04Out of the ball game is Jerry Pilbin coming in as Bill Zapalak, a rookie from the University of Texas. He'll take over at left end.
- 53:11And Jeff Snedeker is working on Jerry Pilbin. Looks like he's working on his hand.
- 53:16Third down about three for Dallas. The Cowboys lead 28 to nothing with 10.38 to go in the first half here in Dallas.
- 53:24The Cowboys with Dave Manders over the ball. The guards are Nyland and Nye. Now Hayes in a slot left with Allworth wide.
- 53:32Back to pass Roger Staubach. The rush is on. He throws over the middle to Ditka the tight end. He's up to the 30 yard line for a first down.
- 53:40Ralph Baker making the stop for the York. Mike Ditka the tight end right over the middle for a first down in the 30.
- 53:46And a gain of eight for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 53:49Well Staubach looks good. He's mixing it up well and he's throwing the ball with authority right on target.
- 53:54Of course he came into this game leading the National Football League in passing the National Football Conference.
- 54:01And I think perhaps the fine defense that Dallas does have and that excellent running attack has helped Staubach stay on top in passing.
- 54:10Bob Hayes wide to the right. Wide to the left. Allworth here's a pitch back to Dwayne Thomas. Thomas gets cut down on about the 32.
- 54:18Mark Lomas the right end. Chuck Edden the right tackle. And Phil Wise from the secondary stops the play. The ball will be put on the 32 of the Cowboys.
- 54:30Jerry Philbin is going to the locker room with Dr. James Nicholas the team position of the Jets. It'll be second down eight for Dallas.
- 54:39Speaking of hands Ralph Baker broke his thumb last week Merle and of course earlier in the year he broke his wrist the same bone and the navicular bone that Namath broke last year so the Jets have been having trouble with their hands.
- 54:52Philbin has an injury to his hand of some kind.
- 54:55Now the Jets due to the switching of the backfield in motion of the right is Bob Hayes is set up in the backfield a handoff going to Calvin Hill in the sweep to the left.
- 55:02Hill gets to the 35. Balls his way up the sideline to the 40 yard line. I don't believe he has a first down.
- 55:09John Nyland the left guard is six year veteran from Iowa pulled out to lead that power sweep.
- 55:15And it's a first down for the Cowboys with a link to the football.
- 55:19And Sam sometimes I think I'm watching the old Green Bay Packers here with those power sweeps for the Cowboys.
- 55:25If you remember last week San Francisco had a great deal of success in sweeping the end of the Jets.
- 55:32Evidently the Cowboys saw it in the movies and they've been concentrating on the outside although he has been mixing it up.
- 55:39They've been running to the inside too. You can't run in one area continually.
- 55:43Lance Alworth wide to the right being covered by Tannen. Bob Hayes to the left. Stalbach back to pass fakes a swing to the left and throws the hill to the right.
- 55:50And screen hill at the 45. Hill going to midfield and is dumped on the 49 yard line of the Jets.
- 55:57That's the same play that worked for a touchdown earlier. John Little making the stop.
- 56:01Roger Stalbach making a swing to Dwayne Thomas at the left flat.
- 56:07Spinning completely around and throwing the hill out in the right flat as the Cowboys tried to set the screen in front.
- 56:13And it works for a first round of the Jet 49 yard line.
- 56:16Yeah good faking on the play. He could have thrown to his left.
- 56:20It's doubtful because he had only one offensive lineman out on the left side to lead for the ball carrier.
- 56:25There was a potential receiver out there. He faked it well.
- 56:29Drew those linebackers just a step or two to their right and then unloaded the ball to the other side of the field.
- 56:35Slot to the left and now Ohworth comes in motion to the right out of the slot.
- 56:38Here is Stalbach a handoff, straight handoff to Dwayne Thomas banging into the right side of the line down to the 42 of New York.
- 56:44John Ebersole linebacker and Steve Cannon off the left corner spot. Make the tackle.
- 56:51Dwayne Thomas back with Dallas after being traded to Boston or New England if you will.
- 56:58Number one draft choice last year had a tremendous season for the Cowboys leading the Cowboys into the Super Bowl.
- 57:04Second down and three after a gain of seven by Dwayne Thomas.
- 57:09Ohworth coming out of the huddle going wide to the left. Bob Hayes the speech strip from Florida A&M going to the right.
- 57:15Calvin Hill sets up on the slot left on the wing. That leaves Dwayne Thomas as a setback. He takes a handoff.
- 57:22Hole opens left side down to the 30, down to the 25, east to the 20 to the 13, finally brought down to the 10.
- 57:30WKX pulling Dwayne Thomas down. Tony Lisio the left tackle was out front to lead the blocking for the Cowboys.
- 57:40Dwayne Thomas now they mark the ball down to the 11 yard line. A gain of 29 yards on the running play by Dwayne Thomas.
- 57:48And first and 10 on the Jet 11 with the Cowboys leading 28 to nothing in the second quarter.
- 57:54Edgers ripping the Jets defensive line apart of course Jerry Philbin is still not in there. Bill Zapolak has taken his place.
- 58:01And of course Zapolak weighs only about 222 pounds so that light defensive line of the Jets is being torn apart.
- 58:09Now Starbuck with the Cowboys in the eye hands up to Dwayne Thomas he's hit by Lomas who loops around to pull him down to the nine yard line.
- 58:18Lomas has played well this year for the yard. He's really had to carry a load replacing Berland Biggs who went to Washington for the Redskins number one draft choice.
- 58:28By the way the Jets will have two number one draft choices in the next draft.
- 58:34Of course the question now is what kind of a number one choice they'll get from Washington because Washington is going to be up on top evidently in the standings and they'll draft late.
- 58:45From the beginning of the year it looked as if on many thought that draft choice might be even more important.
- 58:50Wide to the left Allworth at the slot to the left Hayes second on eight after a two yard pick up Starbuck hands off to Hill sweep to the right.
- 58:57Cut to the five. Cut down. Calvin Hill jumps in his way through Jack McClain. John Nylum the left guard again leading the block in for Dallas.
- 59:07And also Dwayne Thomas gave him a block in the five yard line. So Calvin Hill who has returned today in a place of glory runs one over from the eight yard line and the Cowboys have now scored five times in this game.
- 59:22Ten plays for eighty five yards on that one.
- 59:29Mike Clark is in for the extra point try.
- 59:33Dan Reeves holding the kick is good. There's a timeout on the field and the score the Dallas Cowboys thirty five to New York.
- 59:42Nothing.
- 59:46Mobile.
- 59:49Get.
- 59:52Mobile.
- 59:56Where you.
- 1:00:02When a little engine part like an anti pollution valve gets clogged with dirty deposits you can expect trouble because a dirty anti pollution valve can make your engine idle rough install.
- 1:00:14But there's something you can do to help prevent this kind of rough idling installing use mobile.
- 1:00:20It contains a detergent that cleans your anti pollution valve while you drive mobile detergent gasoline. It can help your car's performance.
- 1:00:34Where you.
- 1:00:46Texas Stadium Cowboys lead thirty five to nothing and we'll pause briefly now for station identification on the jet network.
- 1:00:55Your New York jet network station for northeastern New York WTRY FM Albany.
- 1:01:05The
- 1:01:14twenty five to the thirty thirty five to the forty forty one possibly the forty two yard line.
- 1:01:20Thomas who ran the opening kickoff back one hundred one yard for a touchdown made the tackle a thirty seven yard return.
- 1:01:27return by Phil Wise. Bob Davis will stay in at quarterback for New York. Roger
- 1:01:31Staubach is at six out of seven passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns. The
- 1:01:36Cowboys have run up 11 first down, have gained 85 yards rushing. Calvin Hill has
- 1:01:42scored three touchdowns this afternoon. Wide receivers out both ways for New York.
- 1:01:48Bob Davis a draw to Riggins. Riggins bangs to the 44, moves to the 45. Behind
- 1:01:54the blocking of Winneal, Bob Lilly makes the tackle for the Dallas Cowboys with
- 1:01:58help from Leroy Jordan, the middle linebacker. Bob Lilly in his 11th year
- 1:02:02from Texas Christian has never missed a cowboy game. That's what you call stamina
- 1:02:06and stability and just plain being good. Yeah I personally think that he's
- 1:02:12probably the best defensive tackle that I've ever seen. Whatever happened to Ernie Ladd,
- 1:02:19you used to see him a lot. No this guy is more active, he does everything well and
- 1:02:23he comes every play all the time. Second down, 8 Davis back to throw. Davis
- 1:02:29setting the screen, throwing to Riggins. Riggins is going to be tracked by Lilly and pulled down. Bob Lilly on the 40 yard line, throws Riggins for a two yard loss. Riggins had trouble making that catch because the pass was a little wobbly and a little weak on the throw and Riggins had to hold up on it.
- 1:02:46And that gave Lilly a chance to move in on him and George Andre was putting a
- 1:02:50rush on Davis that made him throw sooner than he wanted to. Bill Gregory now
- 1:02:56checks out of the line for Dallas. Eddie Bell is in for New York, Pete Lamons is out.
- 1:03:00Third down, 12. That's another thing that Louis has, great speed. You really can't
- 1:03:06appreciate him, you can't just watch the football game and count the number of
- 1:03:10times he gets the quarterback because on almost every play there are two
- 1:03:14offensive line, linemen blocking on Louis. Third down, 12 is a call. Davis
- 1:03:19calling signals for the jet. Davis going back to throw, he slips, the flag goes
- 1:03:25down, he throws up the middle.
- 1:03:38And Cornell Green picks it up, brought it back into jet territory, they mark it on the 36 yard line.
- 1:03:44He got it on the 43 and brought it back 22 yards relative with the flags about.
- 1:03:49The flag was thrown as the flag got underway.
- 1:03:53And apparently the penalty was against Dallas so that play will not stand.
- 1:04:03Personal foul indicated against the Cowboys in the 40 yard line.
- 1:04:10And Norm Schachter starts walking off 15 yards against the Cowboys taking the
- 1:04:14ball down to the Dallas, 45. Personal foul against Dallas cost the Cowboys 15.
- 1:04:25Pat Toomey goes out, George Andre comes back in and right in for the Cowboys.
- 1:04:31Wide to the right, Maynard. Herb Annerley covering him. Wide to the left, Rich
- 1:04:35Cantor and Noel Rinpoe will cover him. They'll lay back about seven or eight
- 1:04:38yards. First and 10, New York on the Cowboy 45. Davis barks the flag, goes back to
- 1:04:43the fire, straight back. He is looking, he is throwing long going for somebody.
- 1:04:47It's going to be intercepted by Annerley on the 5, he goes back into the end zone.
- 1:04:50Comes out to the 5, the 10, goes to the 15, after the 20, 25.
- 1:04:54And pulled off to behind by Pete Lillard, all about the 28 yard line.
- 1:04:58That pass was overthrown, there's a flag on the play of the 45 yard line, however.
- 1:05:04On the Cowboy 45, that was the line that's really...
- 1:05:08So we'll wait for the discussion on this one.
- 1:05:12Offside, New York, penalty to Brian Cowboys takes the football.
- 1:05:16We have three minutes and 17 seconds left to play in the first half of the timeout
- 1:05:21on the field to score the Cowboys 35, the Jets nothing.
- 1:05:25Now we were talking about Bob Louie and that fine Dallas defense.
- 1:05:31Dallas has always been tough against the rushing game.
- 1:05:36In fact, they are moving toward their fifth title in six years and defending against the run.
- 1:05:41From 1966 through 1969, Dallas was the toughest team in pro football to gain rushing yards against,
- 1:05:48winning with a low ground yield, four straight times.
- 1:05:52The yards allowed by the Cowboys during that span, 1,176, 1,081, just under 1,200 and 1,050
- 1:06:01were the four lowest totals posted in the NFL over a 14-game schedule.
- 1:06:06The Cowboys, however, did drop to fifth in rushing defense last year.
- 1:06:10They permitted 1,656 yards, but the Texas defenders are back in the trenches again this year.
- 1:06:17They're doing an outstanding job, as always, by that defensive front four
- 1:06:21and of course those fine linebackers that we were talking about before.
- 1:06:25Herb Adderley's sixth interception of the year has given the Cowboys the ball on the 28-yard line in Dallas territory.
- 1:06:31And Jerry Philbin is back in at left-end 40 yards with John Little at left tackle, Chuck Hedden at right tackle, and Mark Lomax at right end.
- 1:06:38The Cowboys will have Dave Manders covering the ball, Nyland and Nye are the guards,
- 1:06:43Glisio and Wright are the tackles, and the tight end is Mike Ditka.
- 1:06:49Wide to the left side, the Cowboys are in the lead.
- 1:06:52And the tight end is Mike Ditka. Wide to the left, all the way to the right, Bob A's, Roger Staubach,
- 1:06:58gives off to Dwayne Thomas coming right through the middle of the 32 for a game of four.
- 1:07:02Brought down by Paul Crane, the linebacker from Alabama, and Jerry Philbin.
- 1:07:09Ball spotted on the 32-yard line. Now Billy Truax comes in, Mike Ditka goes out,
- 1:07:14Gus Holloman coming in for New York in the secondary. He'll replace Paul Crane.
- 1:07:18Holloman possibly will play up on the line of scrimmage, I believe he will, outside of Jerry Philbin.
- 1:07:22Second down, six for Dallas.
- 1:07:24The Cowboys leading 35 to nothing, less than three minutes to play in the first half.
- 1:07:29Dave Manders covers the ball. Wide to the left, Hayes, and the slot to the left is Alworth.
- 1:07:35Calvin Hill and Dwayne Thomas are the setbacks. They break out of the eye, they're in close together.
- 1:07:39Here comes Alworth in motion to the right. As Staubach goes back to pass, two backs back to block four,
- 1:07:44and Staubach throwing to the sideline incomplete. It was intended for Bob Hayes,
- 1:07:48he was double-covered by Bill Weisen, by John Dockery.
- 1:07:52Third down and six on the 32-yard line of the Cowboys.
- 1:07:57By the way, Dwayne Thomas has carried nine times for 64 yards, Hill seven times for 40.
- 1:08:03But Hill has scored three touchdowns today.
- 1:08:08Two on passes, one by rushing.
- 1:08:10Two minutes, 28 seconds to go in the first half.
- 1:08:20Bob Hayes has been a target for the first time. He goes wide to the left.
- 1:08:25To the right is Alworth.
- 1:08:26Cannon's going to play Alworth through the line of scrimmage, head-to-head.
- 1:08:30Staubach on third down, makes his call.
- 1:08:33Staubach is back to pass, two backs stay back to block.
- 1:08:36Dockery cranks up and goes long for Bob Hayes, the battle is over, the ball is complete in the 25-yard line.
- 1:08:42John Dockery is hitter.
- 1:08:44John Hayes on the solo, and Dockery breaks up the play.
- 1:08:48And the crowd thinks Dockery interferes.
- 1:08:53So the Cowboys will be putting it away for the first time today.
- 1:08:57Dave Whitby getting ready to come on.
- 1:09:00Dockery had good cover of John Hayes, and of course Hayes has that blinding speed.
- 1:09:04He's still probably the fastest wide receiver, or the fastest man in football,
- 1:09:09even though he may have slowed down just a little bit from winning when he won the Olympics.
- 1:09:14But Dockery was with him step-by-step. They tangled feet and he fell to the ground.
- 1:09:19The kick is blocked. Ron Whitby's kick is blocked by Mooring, and it goes out of bounds on the Cowboy 27.
- 1:09:25John Mooring, coming to the middle, got his hands up to block Ron Whitby's kick.
- 1:09:29And the Jets will take over. They actually pick up a yard from the previous line of scrimmage.
- 1:09:35The Jets have had but three first downs in this first half.
- 1:09:40Now the ball will go over to the Jets.
- 1:09:43On the 20, they're going to mark it on the 28-yard line in Dallas territory.
- 1:09:47That was almost the line of scrimmage there.
- 1:09:51Pat Toomey at right end, Bob Lilley at right tackle, Bill Gregory at left tackle, and Larry Cole at left end.
- 1:09:57But now it's on the front line.
- 1:09:59George Knox is down as a running back, along with John Rigan.
- 1:10:03They're split wide.
- 1:10:04We're down to 216 to go in the first half. Bob Davis calling signals.
- 1:10:07Jets trail 35 to nothing. A handoff to Rigan.
- 1:10:09Fleroy Jordan misses him on a blitz, but Chuck Halley picks him up to make the tackle just about at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:10:17Jordan came firing through the middle, and Halley, who can really cover the ground laterally, made the stop.
- 1:10:25And we're down to two minutes to go in the first half, and a timeout to the two-minute warning.
- 1:10:31The Cowboys are leading by 35 to nothing, and Bob Davis comes to the sideline to talk to head coach Weeb Eubanks.
- 1:10:37Joe Namath, who started the game for New York, will also confer with Bob Davis.
- 1:10:41But when the Cowboys move to a 28 to nothing lead in the first quarter, Weeb Eubanks pull Namath out of the game,
- 1:10:47and now it looks like he's going to ride with Bob Davis the rest of the way.
- 1:10:50Well, Dallas, we mentioned before, they stagger their defensive linemen.
- 1:10:54Not only do they put one defensive tackle up close to the ball and the other one lying back to guard against the run,
- 1:11:00but they seem to vary the switch between those defensive people.
- 1:11:04One time, the defensive tackle seems to line up inside of the guard, the next time perhaps outside of the guard.
- 1:11:11This also does some, well, it may confuse an offensive lineman on occasion,
- 1:11:16and it also may serve to protect those middle linebackers.
- 1:11:20We mentioned before the linebackers are small.
- 1:11:22Perhaps Dallas would like to keep those big offensive guards off the linebackers.
- 1:11:27Of course, on offense, Dallas does just about everything.
- 1:11:30They have so many different offensive formations that it's very hard to type them, very hard to get tendencies.
- 1:11:37You can't look for tips or any cheating on the part of the offensive backs or the receivers,
- 1:11:43because they rarely line up in the same position twice.
- 1:11:47Eddie Bell has come in.
- 1:11:49Pete Lamont has gone out.
- 1:11:50That gives the Jets three wide receivers.
- 1:11:52Bell wide to the left.
- 1:11:53Caster in the slot left.
- 1:11:54Maynard going to the right.
- 1:11:55Bob Davis at quarterback.
- 1:11:56Calling the play now.
- 1:11:58Davis goes back to pass on second and ten.
- 1:12:00Pump throws over the middle.
- 1:12:01The ball is knocked down by one of the linemen.
- 1:12:03They were trying to set a screen over the middle, and I believe it was Bob Willie who got his hands up to bat that ball down.
- 1:12:09So the Jets will have a third down at almost ten coming on.
- 1:12:15Dallas, by the way, will have two games to go after this one.
- 1:12:20They will play the Giants at New York and then the St. Louis Cardinals as the Cowboys battle the Washington Redskins for the championship of the East in the NFC.
- 1:12:33Now the Jets out of the huddle.
- 1:12:36John Schmidt covers the ball.
- 1:12:38Maynard going to the right.
- 1:12:40Wide to the left is Bell with a slot to the left is Caster.
- 1:12:44Third and ten for the Jets who trail 35 to nothing.
- 1:12:47Davis going back to throw.
- 1:12:48Davis rush. Davis throws long for any ball.
- 1:12:51And it's incomplete at the end zone.
- 1:12:54He was double covered by Mel Wrenfro and by Cornell Green.
- 1:12:58Bobby Halfield will come on for the field goal try now.
- 1:13:02The Jets will try to get some points on their board.
- 1:13:06Davis has thrown nine times, completed three for 12 yards.
- 1:13:11The Jets have rushed for 33 yards and Reagan has 21 of those.
- 1:13:15So the Jets have not had much offense going today at all.
- 1:13:18Davis will hold on the 35.
- 1:13:20Halfield from Bushy England.
- 1:13:24Soccer style kicker.
- 1:13:26Slide angle to the right at the hash mark.
- 1:13:29Cowboys lead 35 to nothing.
- 1:13:31Halfield's kick is on the way.
- 1:13:32He's got the distance.
- 1:13:33It's right through the middle of the upright so the Jets get on the scoreboard.
- 1:13:38So with a minute 46 seconds left to play in the first half,
- 1:13:42Halfield kicks for three and the Cowboys are now leading 35 to three.
- 1:13:48One week from tomorrow, Sunday, December 12th,
- 1:13:51the Jets will be back in the big shade to beat the New England Patriots.
- 1:13:54Listed in at 12.35 for Don Cricky followed by Sam DeLuca and the pregame highlights.
- 1:14:00A week from tomorrow, Sunday, December 12th,
- 1:14:03the Jets and the New England Patriots at Shea Stadium in New York.
- 1:14:09We're talking about this stadium and it really is a beautiful stadium.
- 1:14:12If you look around, they have individual booths that they've sold to people.
- 1:14:18People have to put up bonds.
- 1:14:20And I hear in some cases it goes as much as $50,000, which isn't what they pay.
- 1:14:26It's just a bond that they have to go ahead and hold, I think, for about 35 years.
- 1:14:30And on the way up here we looked into some of these individual booths with their own entrances
- 1:14:35and the people furnished them themselves and some are really exquisite.
- 1:14:39Bobby Halfield kicks off. It's going to go to Harris.
- 1:14:43Here's the goal line. He comes out to the 10, to the 15. Harris to the 20.
- 1:14:47Harris gets hit hard to the 23.
- 1:14:49And John Ebersole makes the tackle for the Jets on the 23-yard line.
- 1:14:54Cowboys leading 35 to 3.
- 1:14:57Sam, I couldn't believe that you bought two of those boxes when obviously you'll never have a chance during the season to see any games.
- 1:15:03Just take care of your clients.
- 1:15:04I didn't buy them. I just, you know, put up the bond.
- 1:15:07And I'd say a lot, a lot of money in this.
- 1:15:11Right here on the press level.
- 1:15:13And they haven't sold out quite a few, I guess, down in the end zone.
- 1:15:16I see they are vacant.
- 1:15:18There you go.
- 1:15:20Cowboys out of the huddle, moving into a slot right.
- 1:15:23Alworth in the slot with Bob Hayes wide to the right.
- 1:15:25Now Alworth goes in motion to the left.
- 1:15:27Roger Staubach calls the play.
- 1:15:28Staubach hands off to Calvin Hill.
- 1:15:30He hits the left side.
- 1:15:31He gets whacked on the 26 by John Little.
- 1:15:36And Chuck Hinton also up out of the tackle.
- 1:15:41Ball spotted on the 26. A gain of 2.
- 1:15:43It'll be second and eighth.
- 1:15:45Phil Wise comes in for the Jets.
- 1:15:4935-3 the score of the Cowboys lead, 53 seconds to play in the first half.
- 1:15:55Lance Alworth out wide to the left.
- 1:15:58Going to the right, Bob Hayes.
- 1:16:01Billy Trueaxe tied in to set up on the left side.
- 1:16:04Dallas running out of the eye and a hand up goes to Dwayne Thomas.
- 1:16:06He finds daylight in the middle, goes up to the 40.
- 1:16:09W.K. Hicks brings him down to the 46.
- 1:16:12And the first down for Dallas at the 46 yard line.
- 1:16:17The Cowboys call time out to stop the clock with 32 seconds.
- 1:16:21A 20 yard pick up by Dwayne Thomas.
- 1:16:25And to the sideline goes Staubach to talk to head coach Tom Landry.
- 1:16:29Those holes in the Jet defensive line are just enormous.
- 1:16:33They're continuing to alternate the four linebackers and the five defensive backs.
- 1:16:38But you can do anything you want.
- 1:16:40You can have all the gimmicks and all the wrinkles.
- 1:16:42And really that's not a gimmick because the Jets used it extremely well over at Chase Stadium.
- 1:16:47It did win a ball game against Baltimore.
- 1:16:49It kept them in the ball game because of that maneuver.
- 1:16:52But you've got to have execution.
- 1:16:54You've got to have people on the defensive line delivering a blow,
- 1:16:57controlling the offensive linemen, and moving toward the ball carrier, closing the hole.
- 1:17:02The holes are just gaping.
- 1:17:03I don't care what you do out there.
- 1:17:05When you're getting beaten like that up front,
- 1:17:07you're going to lose the football game and look silly in doing it.
- 1:17:10Here come the Cowboys with Allworth moving in motion to the right.
- 1:17:13Staubach going back to throw on first down.
- 1:17:15He's in the pocket.
- 1:17:16He is throwing for Allworth.
- 1:17:17Makes the catch and the 40 gets drilled out of bounds on the 39-yard line of the Jets.
- 1:17:23And the tackle made by Steve Tannen.
- 1:17:26I'm not sure they marked the ball out of bounds though because the clock is still running.
- 1:17:29It is.
- 1:17:30The Cowboys thought the clock had stopped.
- 1:17:32We're down to 16 seconds.
- 1:17:34And now the Cowboys.
- 1:17:35Staubach is now talking to the official saying,
- 1:17:38wait a minute, he was out of bounds and the clock was running,
- 1:17:40but the official on the sideline said no.
- 1:17:43And the Cowboys now call timeout with 12 seconds remaining
- 1:17:46after a 16-yard pass play from Roger Staubach to Lance Allworth.
- 1:17:54Lance Allworth now becomes the NFL's fourth leading all-time receiver, 522 reception.
- 1:18:01That's not fair, Murrow.
- 1:18:02I had that.
- 1:18:03I was waiting for that whole game and they flashed it up on the scoreboard.
- 1:18:08I spotted it in the press release.
- 1:18:10I've been waiting for him to throw to Allworth.
- 1:18:12You beat me to it.
- 1:18:13Well, I'll give you Don Maynard when his 600s comes up.
- 1:18:17Okay, thank you.
- 1:18:19That's the first time he's thrown to Allworth all game.
- 1:18:23He keeps throwing to his tight end and his setbacks.
- 1:18:26He threw to Bob Hayes a couple of times,
- 1:18:29but Dockery, as we said before, has been covering Hayes quite well.
- 1:18:35Murrow, here's one for you.
- 1:18:37All right.
- 1:18:38Allworth needs 34 yards to become the second receiver to gain 10,000 yards.
- 1:18:43Of course, Don Maynard has a 11,164 coming into today's game.
- 1:18:48And what did Allworth get on the last one, 22?
- 1:18:50So he needs 12 to get over that 10,000 mark.
- 1:18:54All right, Staubach is 7 out of 10 for 111 yards.
- 1:18:58Cowboys have picked up 13 first downs and 132 yards on the ground,
- 1:19:03so they've had it moving.
- 1:19:04Staubach faking, going back to throw, throwing long for Bob Hayes.
- 1:19:09That is knocked down by W.K. Hicks on the goal line.
- 1:19:12He was actually going for the interception, but he couldn't make it.
- 1:19:15Steve Shannon moved over to Alphonse,
- 1:19:17and we're down to six seconds on the clock for the first half.
- 1:19:19Mike Clark coming in for Dallas for a field goal attempt.
- 1:19:29By the way, at halftime today, our guest will be Tuck Schramm,
- 1:19:32the president and general manager of the Cowboys.
- 1:19:37So we have six seconds left to play.
- 1:19:41Mike Clark from the 45 with Dan Reeves holding.
- 1:19:47Dan Reeves, the all-everything performer for the Cowboys,
- 1:19:50can play quarterback, running back, has been an assistant coach.
- 1:19:53Here's the snap, the kick by Clark is on the way, and it is good.
- 1:19:58A 45-yard field goal by Mike Clark,
- 1:20:01and we have one second left on the clock for the first half.
- 1:20:11So now the Cowboys lead 38-3.
- 1:20:17One second remaining to be played.
- 1:20:19That'll cover the kickoff, and that's about it.
- 1:20:23If you join the slate,
- 1:20:25Ike Thomas sets the pace for Dallas
- 1:20:28by returning the game's opening kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown.
- 1:20:33And within 16 seconds, the Cowboys had a 7-0 lead.
- 1:20:37It looks like Dallas is going to win it six straight
- 1:20:41over American Football Conference teams.
- 1:20:43The NFC has clinched a 40-game interconference series
- 1:20:46with the American Football Conference.
- 1:20:48To this point, they've won 20, lost 9 with two ties.
- 1:20:51Short kickoff, grabbed by George Noggin, the 28,
- 1:20:54not going to the 30, not trying to find a block,
- 1:20:57knocked back to the 49, knocked ball down.
- 1:21:00Oh, did he take a pop on the 39-yard line
- 1:21:04as the first half comes to an end.
- 1:21:06Joe Williams paints the tackle.
- 1:21:09So there's the end of the first half,
- 1:21:11and the score, the Dallas Cowboys 38-3.
- 1:21:18We're at halftime at Texas Stadium,
- 1:21:20where the Cowboys are leading the New York Jets 38-3 at halftime.
- 1:21:24This is Merle Herman, and I'll be back with my halftime guest,
- 1:21:27Tech Schramm, the president and general manager of the Cowboys,
- 1:21:30in just a moment.
- 1:21:32Tech Schramm, the president and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys,
- 1:21:35has seen a lot of things happen to professional football here in Dallas,
- 1:21:38and for that matter, in the NFL, because he's made it happen.
- 1:21:41And we're looking at one of the things that he made happen here
- 1:21:44in this magnificent new stadium here in Dallas.
- 1:21:47And, Tech, I know an operation and a construction job like this
- 1:21:51must be a lot of headaches, but it must please you immensely
- 1:21:54to see it build and see it so beautiful
- 1:21:56and see a great football team playing in it.
- 1:21:58Well, you certainly do get a lot of gratitude for that.
- 1:22:01You get a lot of gratification out of seeing it in operation
- 1:22:05as it is now after the planning that went into it for the last four years.
- 1:22:10I think the unique part of the stadium is that it was financed with private capital.
- 1:22:18There are no tax payers' dollars in this stadium.
- 1:22:24The people who are paying for this stadium are the people who are sitting down there
- 1:22:29in the stands because they purchased the bonds that built the stadium,
- 1:22:36and we're very proud of that.
- 1:22:38And I think it is now probably the finest football stadium
- 1:22:44that we have in the United States.
- 1:22:46By the way, Sam DeLuca wants to buy one of those flush boxes from you
- 1:22:50that we looked in on before the game today.
- 1:22:52Well, those boxes, you have to buy $50,000 worth of bonds for one of those boxes,
- 1:22:58but when you think that you have that box for the next 35 years or longer,
- 1:23:06it turns out to be really a pretty good investment
- 1:23:09because if you're going to watch a football game, that's the way to go.
- 1:23:13First cabin all the way.
- 1:23:15Chuck, in this day and age you mentioned that this stadium was built with private funds.
- 1:23:20I don't recall any other stadium that has been built with private funds
- 1:23:23in the last many, many years now, even since the war.
- 1:23:26How can this thing be practical?
- 1:23:29Well, the only way that it's practical is the willingness of people
- 1:23:36to invest their money in the bonds.
- 1:23:39They don't return a great rate of interest,
- 1:23:44but if you want to have a season ticket, you have to buy a bond.
- 1:23:49We sold 32,000 season tickets, and this purchase required either between the 30-yard lines,
- 1:23:59the purchase of a $1,000 bond for each season ticket,
- 1:24:03and all the rest of them are $250 for each season ticket.
- 1:24:09So the fans, and we're selling them now as fast as we are, even with the season almost over,
- 1:24:18we're still selling them where the people know that they won't be sitting in the seats until next year.
- 1:24:25But I guess it's just the intense interest that you have in football down here
- 1:24:30and the realization that they are a part of this stadium.
- 1:24:36Chuck, let's talk about your ball club now.
- 1:24:39It would appear on the basis of what we have seen in the first half
- 1:24:42and the way your club has been winning that Coach Tom Landry is peaking his team at this point.
- 1:24:47So many teams and maybe years in the past possibly a peak too early,
- 1:24:51and then you've gotten trouble late in the season.
- 1:24:53Compare, if you will, for us, the progress of the team this year as to last year when you marched into the Super Bowl.
- 1:25:01Well, it seems as though we've gotten to the position that maybe we have to have a little adversity.
- 1:25:09We've won our division every year since 1966,
- 1:25:14and as a result people just always kind of automatically say,
- 1:25:19well, the Cowboys will win the East, and then they start going on and talking about other divisions where they think there's going to be a race.
- 1:25:26And I think after a little bit of time this starts thinking in on everybody.
- 1:25:32You just get a little bit complacent, I guess.
- 1:25:35Tex Schramm is the president and general manager of the Cowboys, as you know.
- 1:25:38And Tex, I'd like to know how you got Dwayne Thomas back, how it worked,
- 1:25:43and it looks like he has come back and really put it all together for you.
- 1:25:47Well, Dwayne, we've always wanted Dwayne as a football player,
- 1:25:52and when the controversy was going on last spring and summer,
- 1:25:58we always took the position that if Dwayne reported that there was a play for him,
- 1:26:05that what his feelings were and what he said about me or something like that was important.
- 1:26:12The important thing was of how he related to his teammates and what he produced on the football field,
- 1:26:21and anything else is kind of unimportant.
- 1:26:24And we always took that position, and before the league season started,
- 1:26:30Dwayne came in and said that he wanted to play, and since that time he's been doing his job on the football field.
- 1:26:39I think now with Calvin Hill healthy again,
- 1:26:44I think we have some problems to present to other football teams with both Dwayne Thomas and Calvin in the same backfield.
- 1:26:53Did Jim Brown play a role in Dwayne Thomas coming back, Jim Brown the former Cleveland star, now a motion picture actor?
- 1:26:59Yes, when Dwayne came down the week before our opening league game, he was accompanied by Jim Brown,
- 1:27:06and Jim told him that he had no alternative other than to play, in essence,
- 1:27:15and convinced him that he was better off playing football than not.
- 1:27:21Is he happy now, Dwayne?
- 1:27:23Yes.
- 1:27:24I really couldn't tell you whether he's happy. He's a very quiet man. He has his own thoughts.
- 1:27:32If performance on the football field means he's happy, then he's pretty happy.
- 1:27:37He looks happy.
- 1:27:38I'm happy.
- 1:27:39Okay, Tex, thanks so much for coming up. It's great to see you. Congratulations again on the great part.
- 1:27:43Well, thank you very much.
- 1:27:44Tex Ram, the president and general manager of the Cowboys. We'll be right back with a second half kickoff in just a minute.
- 1:27:51Vernon Stutter takes the second half kickoff. The New York Jets brings it out to the 24-yard line where Charlie Waters smacks him down.
- 1:27:59Still we're underway in the third quarter at Texas Stadium in Dallas. The Jets with Bob Davis as quarterback.
- 1:28:05Come out of the huddle, George Knock and John Riggins to the running back. Wide to the left is Caster. Wide to the right is Don Maynard.
- 1:28:11The Jets trail 38-3 going into the third quarter. Davis barks the play, gives up to Riggins. No hole at the left tackle spot.
- 1:28:18Tries to get to the outside. Now cuts across the 25. Gets to about the 27.
- 1:28:23D.D. Lewis, who just barely made it in as a linebacker on the right side, made the tackle. He got in there just as the play started.
- 1:28:31Ball is put down on the 28-yard line, let's make it. And the Jets have a second down and about six, a little more than six possibly.
- 1:28:42Caster coming wide to the left. Going to the right is Don Maynard. The Jets operating in the eye. Bob Davis as quarterback.
- 1:28:48Bob Davis' start of the game has not been in since the second quarter started. Here is a sideline pattern to Caster, but Rich can't hold on to the ball.
- 1:28:57Covered by Mel Renfro. Short pass play, but again only about three yards. Now it's third down and six for New York.
- 1:29:04Sam, what about the first half now statistically?
- 1:29:07Well, as we would expect all Dallas, 14 first downs to four for the Jets, rushing yardage 133 to 131 for the Jets.
- 1:29:16Through the air, Dallas had 115 yards, 29 for the Jets. Passes, Dallas with seven for 11, the Jets four for 14 with three in the section.
- 1:29:27Third down play for Bob Davis and the Jets. Davis goes back to pass and Lillie is after him. Davis setting a screen.
- 1:29:36Riggins makes the catch, but he's going to be thrown for a loss by middle linebacker Leroy Jordan.
- 1:29:42So the pass was completed for a loss back to about the 25 yard line. It's fourth down and almost 10 for New York.
- 1:29:49Of course that screen pass requires good acting on the part of the offensive line and the quarterback.
- 1:29:54The quarterback usually looks in the other direction and then he drifts back for another four or five yards after setting up and releases the ball.
- 1:30:03There was no acting on that part. Dallas read it. There were six people over to get the ball carried.
- 1:30:09O'Neill hangs one high in the air and a fair catch is called for on the Dallas 35 by Cliff Harris and that's where the Cowboys will take over.
- 1:30:16Ball is marked officially on the 34 yard line of Dallas, a 40 yard kick by Steve O'Neill and the Cowboys take over for the first time in the second half.
- 1:30:25Cowboys leading by a score of 38 to three. They have two more games to play. They'll play the New York Giants in New York next week and then they play the St. Louis Cardinals here at Texas Stadium.
- 1:30:35The Jets of course next week on Sunday, December 12th. The week from tomorrow will be back in the big shade to take on the New England Patriots.
- 1:30:42Be sure to listen in at 1235 for Don Pricky and the pregame show. Time out on the field to score. Dallas 38, the Jets three.
- 1:31:10Dirt deposits can build up in your carburetor and a dirty carburetor could mean trouble.
- 1:31:17But you don't have to worry about a dirty carburetor because even if you do have a dirty one, we can help with mobile detergent gasoline.
- 1:31:26Because the detergent in mobile cleans your carburetor as you drive. So use mobile detergent gasoline. It can help your car's performance.
- 1:31:37Mobile gasoline takes you where you want to be. Where you want to be.
- 1:31:49Roger Staubach back to pass, fumbles a ball and picks it up on the 29 yard line. Tackled immediately by Mark Loomis, the right end.
- 1:31:58So Staubach, who was trying to throw, dropped the ball, went after it, and now it is ruled a completed pass. Or an incomplete pass, I beg your pardon.
- 1:32:07They ruled that his hand had gone forward and it was nothing but an incompletion. So the ball comes back to the line of scrimmage where it will be second down and ten for Dallas.
- 1:32:16But Staubach wasn't taking any chances. He went back to cover that ball.
- 1:32:22Out of the huddle come the Cowboys. To the right is Alworth, to the left is Hayes, and a give to Tomas coming to the middle.
- 1:32:30He fumbles the ball, it's picked up by W.K. Hicks who fumbles the ball, and the Cowboys, I think, recover it on the 41 for a game. They do.
- 1:32:38Dwayne Thomas, who fumbled the ball, recovered Hicks fumble. No, it was Bob Hayes who recovered.
- 1:32:47So the comedy of errors here at Texas Stadium gives Dallas the double fumble for a game at the 40.
- 1:32:57And a first down on the 40 yard line.
- 1:33:02Yeah, there's no explanation for it except perhaps Hicks did slip. He was going to the ground and perhaps he was so surprised by slipping, no one was around him when he let go of the ball that had just popped out of his hand.
- 1:33:15Hayes, slot left, hand off to Hill. Hill power sweep to the right at the 40. Knocked out of bounds on the 43 by Phil Wise, who jolted him out of bounds.
- 1:33:28Again, a three yards to make it second and seven.
- 1:33:33So the Cowboys leading 38 to three in the third period.
- 1:33:39John Ebersole comes out for New York. Right now Paul Crane, Ralph Baker, and Larry Grantham are the linebackers.
- 1:33:47Philbin, Little, Hinton, and Lomas up front.
- 1:33:52Phil Wise playing over the line of scrimmage on the right side.
- 1:33:56Wide receivers out both ways for Dallas. Second down is the call. Stalbach goes back to pass.
- 1:34:02And in the pocket, throwing back over the middle. A fine catch by Billy Truax at tight end. He is down to the 50 yard line, bounces down to the 49 in jet territory.
- 1:34:11Hicks knocked him off balance, and he was covered by Paul Crane, but a great catch by Billy Truax and time out for a measurement.
- 1:34:19An eight yard pick up on the play. Ebersole is back in. Phil Wise goes out.
- 1:34:25Good pass protection, Merle. The Jets were blitzing two linebackers, and Dallas kept them away from the quarterback.
- 1:34:32And a first down by a little more than the length of the football.
- 1:34:35Dallas leads in the Eastern Division of the NFC, a half game over Washington.
- 1:34:39Dallas is one, eight, lost three. Washington is seven, three and one. Washington will play the Giants tomorrow.
- 1:34:48Now the Cowboys, first down in the 49 of New York. Out of the huddle. Over the ball is Dave Manders. The guards are John Nyland and Blaine Nye.
- 1:34:55The tackles, Tony Licio and Rayfield Wright. Here's a slot to the right for Dallas. Hayes wide. Now Alworth out of the slot and motion to the left.
- 1:35:02Stalbach backed up by a straight back. He goes. He's throwing for Alworth. He's wide open. Makes the catch in the 35.
- 1:35:08And he is knocked out of bounds on the 30 yard line by John Dockery. I think they're going to spot it on the 31 where he went out.
- 1:35:14So Lance Alworth, who used to be known as Bambi. But whatever happened to that nickname Sam?
- 1:35:21I guess maybe he outgrew it and he's a full grown deer now. I don't know. But of course he got the nickname partly because of those big brown eyes.
- 1:35:30And partly because he used to go up in the air so well to catch the ball like a deer running down field.
- 1:35:36Incidentally Murl in the first half, Stalbach threw 11 times. He's thrown three or four times in this half and never once has he scrambled out of the pocket.
- 1:35:46Sam you're missing your cue on Alworth. 10,000 yards he has now on the 20 yard pick up.
- 1:35:51Hand off to Dwayne Thomas down to the 25 to the 20. Inside the 20 to the 19.
- 1:35:57Paul Crane is in on the tackle for New York with Steve Tannen and John Dockery.
- 1:36:04Another first down for the Cowboys who lead 38 to 3. Mike Ditka comes in. Billy Truax checks out for Dallas.
- 1:36:16The ball is close to the 18 yard line now. In fact it is on the 18 yard line where they finally line it up.
- 1:36:24Bob Hayes going to the left. Lance Alworth wide to the right. Ditka the tight end is set on the right side.
- 1:36:29Dallas shifts out of the eye. The running backs are split by about three yards. Now Hill goes in motion to the left.
- 1:36:34That leaves Dwayne Thomas back to pass. Stalbach blitz on by Baker. Screen set. Pass caught by Thomas.
- 1:36:39Thomas to the 15 to 10 to 5. Touchdown!
- 1:36:45The Jets quits through the middle and Stalbach got it away. A great catch by Dwayne Thomas.
- 1:36:50And he goes in for 18 yards and a touchdown.
- 1:36:54There were no setbacks to pick up Ralph Baker. Ralph Baker was blitzing. The Jets had the blitz on.
- 1:37:00Stalbach got the ball away and of course there was nobody there to make the tackle. They were blitzing a couple of linebackers.
- 1:37:07That's the gamble of the blitz.
- 1:37:10Dallas Dally 44 to 3. Mike Clark out there to try to make it 45.
- 1:37:18And the kick is good. Time out on the field. The score, the Dallas Cowboys 45. The New York Jets 3.
- 1:37:28Now let's continue to look at this Dallas Cowboys team and it probably has just about the best personnel in football along with the Minnesota Vikings.
- 1:37:36Let's look at the defensive secondary. At right corner back they have Mel Renfro.
- 1:37:41Six feet 190 pounds. Eight years in the National Football League. At left corner back Herb Attaway. Six feet 200 pounds.
- 1:37:50He's now been around for 11 years of course most of those years with the Green Bay Packers.
- 1:37:55And he's done a lot to bring this defensive secondary together.
- 1:37:59At right safety Cornell Green. Six three 208 pounds. A nine year veteran with a great knowledge of the game.
- 1:38:05And he's also got the speed. Of course he's playing safety. He can play corner back and they alternate those people back there.
- 1:38:12At left safety Cliff Harris. Six feet 184 pounds. He's the baby in the defensive backfield. He's only been around for two years.
- 1:38:20So there's a lot of experience in that defensive secondary and also at the linebacker spot.
- 1:38:27Astronaut Alan Bean is here today and has just been congratulated on completing the longest pass in the world.
- 1:38:37By the way Lance Alworth as Sam had mentioned earlier has now become the second man to pass 10,000 yards in pass receiving and Don Maynard is the other.
- 1:38:46Roger Staubach has completed 10 passes out of 15 tries for 170 yards in free touchdown.
- 1:38:55Here's Mike Clark's kickoff. High but not far. Vernon Studdard on the apron he arched to the 10 to the 15. Studdard going to the 20.
- 1:39:03Studdard to the 25 to the 30. 35. Cuts in. Goes to the 40. And gets to the 45 and that's it.
- 1:39:09Nice return by Vernon Studdard the rookie from Mississippi. And the tackle was made by Joe Williams.
- 1:39:17Bob Davis will be in at quarterback as the Jets take over on their own 45 yard line. They trail 45 to three.
- 1:39:24And the third period. By the way Dwayne Thomas has rushed 12 times for 99 yards. He has 99 of the 136 yards the Cowboys have picked up on the ground.
- 1:39:35Eddie Bell goes wide to the left. Don Maynard to the right. Rich Casher out of the game for the moment.
- 1:39:40Running backs are split and Davis hands off to Steve Harkey. Harkey goes or rather George Knock. Knock goes to midfield.
- 1:39:47No it is Harkey. Steve Harkey going to midfield and is brought down by Larry Cole the defensive left end for Dallas.
- 1:39:54So the game is five. It will be second and five for New York.
- 1:40:01Dallas led 28 to nothing. At the end of the first quarter.
- 1:40:13Wide to the left Bell to the right is Maynard and a handoff going to Harkey. Harkey trying to get to the outside.
- 1:40:19Goes down to the 45 down to the 40. Puts his head down. Rims over the tackler Adderley and bounces down to the 39 yard line.
- 1:40:27But they brought well where are they going to spot it. They brought the ball back to the 41 for a moment.
- 1:40:33Now they've taken it back to the 39 yard line. They being the officials.
- 1:40:36Again 11 yards by Steve Harkey the rookie out of Georgia Tech who now lives in Edina Minnesota.
- 1:40:43Well the offensive line is taking relatively large splits. They usually don't split to get blocking angles but to open up holes.
- 1:40:51However they are getting some fine blocking angles because of the splits and the Dallas habit of staggering their people and lining them up inside and outside.
- 1:41:00Here's Harkey the setback. Here's Davis to Harkey. Harkey hits to the outside and gets thrown in the 40 yard line by Leroy Jordan the middle linebacker.
- 1:41:11Steve Harkey carrying for the third straight time. Thrown for a yard loss to make it second and 11 on the 40 of Dallas.
- 1:41:21Tony Smith is now in the left end for the Cowboys. He's Bubba's little brother. He only weighs 245. He's 6'5". He did not go to Michigan State.
- 1:41:30He played his college ball at USC and was the number one draft choice for the Cowboys this year.
- 1:41:35Larry Cole has switched to right tackle for Dallas. Andre playing the right end for the Cowboys. Bob Lilly is out of there for the moment.
- 1:41:44Second down call. Back to pass goes Bob Davis. Davis throwing to knock coming out of the backfield. He has tackled as he tried to make the catch by D.D. Lewis the left side linebacker.
- 1:41:53And he tried to catch the ball as he was going to the ground the second time. Third down and a little more than 10 at the 40.
- 1:42:04Rambling Tiger marching band performed at halftime here today in Texas. What a show. Rich Castor is back in for New York. Eddie Bell departs.
- 1:42:13Tets have had good pass protection. The quarterback hasn't been rushed.
- 1:42:24Third down coming now. Castor wide to the left. Wide to the right, Don Maynard. And Davis goes back to throw. Andre trying to get to him. Davis is going to run the ball right up the middle of the 35. Davis gets down to the 30.
- 1:42:39Davis is finally thrown down after he gets the first down to about the 28. Dale Edwards made the stop. The left linebacker. So Bob Davis scrambling right through the middle. Getting a first down at the Dallas 28.
- 1:42:52And again, Murrow, he wasn't rushed. He just happened to see a hole open up to his left side. If he's going to run with the ball when he gets down in that area where the defense is converging on him, the thing to do is to dive for the ball, not to do what Davis did on that last play.
- 1:43:06He turned his back to that defensive man coming up to make the tackle. And that's one way to get some sore ribs and perhaps lose the football. Davis got 12 yards in a first down to the 28.
- 1:43:18He joined the slate. Joe Namath played the first quarter, but when the Jets fell behind 28 to nothing, Weeb Eubank took him out of the line if he has not been back.
- 1:43:25Weeb obviously did not want to take any chances with the Jets that far behind. Here is a handoff to Harky hitting straight into the left side of the line, getting a yard maybe. Larry Cole met him and threw him all the way back across the 30 to the 33.
- 1:43:41But his forward progress will be marked at the 32, a gain of one, second, nine coming up for New York.
- 1:43:49So hard to tell from up here whether the running back has picked the right hole. On that last play, it looked like he had some running room over the middle.
- 1:43:57And of course the Jet running backs almost always have the option, unless it's a trap play, of running into any area where they see a hole develop.
- 1:44:05But of course it looks, it may look like a hole is there from up here, but on the field somebody may be coming over, which causes the running back to run in an area that appears to be congested.
- 1:44:15Davis goes back to pass. Davis, no receivers going to run the ball. Down to the 20. Davis to the 10. Davis to the 5. He is down to the 3 and that's it. Tackled by Herb Adderley and Dave Edwards.
- 1:44:27Now, rather, Bob Davis, oh so close to a touchdown, but he got just as far as he could go and you know what it looked like, Sam, he couldn't quite make up his mind whether he was going to try to pull his way on through or go down after he picked up 24 yards. He's still alive. That's what's important.
- 1:44:45He came close then. It just, if he would have go for that goal line, he may not have reached the goal line, but he would have picked up another yard or two, but you don't just stop. He looks like he just stopped the play before when he scrambled. He turned his back. That time he just stopped Cole and said, lay it to me. You know, hit me. It's not the way to do it.
- 1:45:05Eddie Bell to the right. The ends are in tight. The running backs are knocked and Harky. Davis calls the play. First and goal of a three yard line of Dallas. Davis a handoff to knock. Knock bangs to about the two. He might be inside the two at the one.
- 1:45:19They're stacked up at the one yard line. George Andre is in there. Bob Lilley was back in Cornell green up from the secondary. John Riggins comes in. Eddie Bell goes out. That'll give the Jets a full house backfield. The ball at the one yard line of Dallas. The Jets have not been able to score except by the one field goal by Bob Howfield.
- 1:45:40The Cowboys are leading 45 to three. We're five minutes away from the end of the third quarter. The Jets break the huddle. John Schmidt is out over the ball.
- 1:45:55The Jets set up at a power eye in the backfield. John Davis barks the play. Knock in motion. Handoff to Harky. Harky pulls to the one foot line, but he didn't get over. Cornell green came up over the top. George Andre hit him down low.
- 1:46:09And green whacked him high to knock him down short of the goal line. It'll be second down in goal to goal. Inside the one.
- 1:46:23The Jets will play the New England Patriots next week at the Big Shea in New York a week from tomorrow.
- 1:46:30Right now they're trying to put one up on the board against the Cowboys. Power eye right.
- 1:46:36Davis barks the play. Davis fakes. Go rolls right. Pitches the ball to knock. Touchdown. He caught the ball. George Knock and Alley-Oop pass.
- 1:46:45That was kind of a split tee type quarterback play. And Bob Davis was dumped hard as he let that ball go. He was really belted by Toady Smith.
- 1:46:56And Peter Batterley was also over there. And Davis just kind of shot put the ball up an old sliding tee, if you will.
- 1:47:06Yeah, it looked like a basketball play to me. Fake to his left and then in a one-handed jump shot.
- 1:47:12But the Jets get on the scoreboard with George Knock catching a one-yard touchdown pass. Bob Howfield to the extra point try. Davis will hold.
- 1:47:21Forty-five to nine. Dallas. Here's the snap and Howfield's kick is good.
- 1:47:274-0-7 to go in the third quarter of timeout of the field. And the score is the Dallas Cowboys 45, the New York Jets 10.
- 1:47:37From Dallas, Pearl Herman and Sam DeLuca. With Dallas leading New York 45 to 10. Bob Howfield getting ready to kick off for New York.
- 1:47:47Harris and Thomas are deep and this one is going to go to Harris on the goal line.
- 1:47:52He comes out to the five to the ten, stumbles at the 15-yard line and falls forward to the 17 or 18. I think he fell over Thomas.
- 1:48:02Well, that touchdown pass of the Jets may not have been a picture pass, but it served the purpose. It got the Jets across the goal line.
- 1:48:10You know, every time I see the Dallas Cowboys backed up to their own goal line down on the one foot of the one-yard line, I think of those games against Green Bay.
- 1:48:19And of course the one game that they lost in the closing second in that same situation. Evidently they've learned their lesson.
- 1:48:27Greg Morton is now in the quarterback for Dallas for the first time today. Hands off to Calvin Hill who bangs over the middle across the 20 and out to the 22.
- 1:48:36Paul Crane, the left linebacker from Alabama, makes the tackle for New York. By the way, Bob Davis is now the leading Jet rusher in this game.
- 1:48:44He's carried three times for 38 yards. He directed that last drive, 55 yards on ten plays for the Jet touchdown. Again a four-second and six for Dallas.
- 1:48:55Craig Morton, a seven-year veteran from California, at 6'4", 214 pounds. Bob Hayes to the left.
- 1:49:03D'Loster Richardson has replaced Lance Alworth. He's wide to the right. A handoff goes to Dwayne Thomas. Thomas trying to get to the outside runs into Steve Tannen after a two-yard thick up.
- 1:49:12But now he is written out of bounds by Paul Crane and Steve Tannen as Dwayne Thomas stays on his feet. He's very strong.
- 1:49:20They'll mark the ball to the 24-yard line where it'll be third down coming up for Dallas. Ball goes down on the 24 and third down about four coming up.
- 1:49:30New York Jets football is produced by and through the facilities of WOR AM radio in New York. The flagship station of the New York Jets radio network.
- 1:49:44Dwayne Thomas has now gained 101 yards in this game. Here's a slot right. Alworth back in, goes in motion to the left out of the slot.
- 1:49:52Bob Hayes wide to the right. Craig Morton back to pass on third and four. Morton in the pocket throwing. It's incomplete and set for Alworth on a slant end.
- 1:50:00And Larry Granton had a shot at an interception. So the Cowboys will give up the football.
- 1:50:05Today's game is also being broadcast live all over the world over the Armed Forces radio network to more than 350 overseas affiliates.
- 1:50:17We're delighted to have our service personnel listening in. We send you greetings from Dallas and very happy holidays coming up.
- 1:50:27Too bad it couldn't have been a better football game. It really is. I know Tech Schramm said that as he left the booth.
- 1:50:32It's really a shame that the game wasn't such that Joe Namath could have stayed longer and the fans would have had a better look at him here.
- 1:50:38Whitby punting it away for Dallas drives it downfield. Ferris Ophelous after the ball takes a bounce. He feels it on the 31. Ferris Ophelous trying to get to the outside gets to the 33.
- 1:50:47And Ike Thomas stops him on the 33 yard line. A 45 yard kick by Ron Whitby.
- 1:50:55Well I may have been unsad at Craig Morton on the pregame show. I knocked him pretty good.
- 1:51:01Every time I hear or see of Craig Morton I think of those three games at the end of last season that were on national television.
- 1:51:08The two playoff games and the Super Bowl. And he was just totally inept. I mean he couldn't do anything right.
- 1:51:14And at the time I just couldn't believe that Landry would keep Starbuck on the bench. He had to be better than Craig Morton was in those three games.
- 1:51:23Eddie Bell wide to the left and Maynard to the right. Bob Davis back to pass. Roy Sean screen to the right to Harky at the 30. Harky to the 35. Knocks it a bounce after he crosses the 35 with a 37 by D.D. Lewis the left linebacker.
- 1:51:36So Steve Harky on the screen and a flag was thrown to the line of Scrimmage however. The initial indication is that Dallas was offside.
- 1:51:47So another thing that probably influenced me is that I had heard that Morton was very well liked by his Dallas teammates and perhaps there was some pressure to give him every possible opportunity and keep him in there because he had been around for seven years.
- 1:52:03And he did sit on the bench behind Meredith. But I think that it's been proved conclusively at this point anyway that Roger Starbuck is the better quarterback and Craig Morton should not be starting for the Cowboys.
- 1:52:15And besides that he's a Navy man and I'm a Navy man.
- 1:52:19Okay first and five as the Jets take the five yard penalty.
- 1:52:24Bob Davis at quarterback. Eddie Bell to the left Maynard to the right. Here's a handoff to Knock Knock right through the middle turning for a first down to the 44 yard line of New York. Pat Toomey from Vanderbilt a second year man makes the tackle with help from Larry Cole.
- 1:52:39A veteran from the University of Hawaii.
- 1:52:44First down New York on the 44 yard line of the Jets. We have two minutes left to play in the third quarter. The Cowboys lead the Jets 45 to 10. They led at the end of the first quarter 28 to nothing.
- 1:52:54They led it to half 38 to three.
- 1:52:58Sure is a beautiful stadium.
- 1:53:02That's a nice observation.
- 1:53:04Bell to the left Maynard to the right.
- 1:53:07Davis a handoff to Harky Harky hits the right side on a slant turns out across the 45 to the 48.
- 1:53:14Larry Cole is over to make the tackle for Dallas.
- 1:53:21Dee Dee Lewis also over there.
- 1:53:24Pat Toomey playing right in Larry Cole at right tackle Bob Lilly out of the ballgame. Bill Gregory at left tackle.
- 1:53:31Tody Smith at left end as coach Tom Landry is giving some of his younger players a little experience here.
- 1:53:39Bell coming out to the left Maynard to the right second down six after a gain of four.
- 1:53:45Bell splits by 15 yards to the left. Here's a pitch going wide to Harky.
- 1:53:48Harky trying to play a block by Cuias cuts in and knocks a would be tackler over backward as he goes across midfield getting down to the 47 yard line of the Cowboys.
- 1:53:57Mel Rinfro will get credit from the stop but this Steve Harky is a tough kid Sam.
- 1:54:03Always tough. This is what the jet coaches were so impressed with.
- 1:54:07Well somebody suggested that the jets may be trying to run out the clock.
- 1:54:12I guess that's that's unfair too.
- 1:54:14It's just one of those days when when nothing went right and you get off to a bad start and of course nobody is more demoralized than the jets were after the Cowboys got on the scoreboard so quickly in the very first quarter.
- 1:54:26Third down and one. Riggins has come in to give the jets a full house backfield. Harky a knock on the other back. Davis calling signals.
- 1:54:33Davis takes the snap and he gives to Harky and Harky hits close to the 45 and he'll be very close to a first down he might have it.
- 1:54:41Charlie Waters from the secondary stops the play for the Dallas Cowboys and it is a first down for the jets in the 45 yard line as the gun stops play and we have come to the end of the third quarter.
- 1:54:53So there's the end of the third quarter of the score. The Dallas Cowboys 45 of the New York Jets 10.
- 1:55:02The fourth quarter coming up in Dallas where the Cowboys lead the jet 45 to 10.
- 1:55:10And the Jets have the ball of the Dallas 45 yard line. Joe Davis says we have mentioned several times has not seen action since the first quarter.
- 1:55:18Only because of the score. The Cowboys when they had 28 to nothing.
- 1:55:23This field in Dallas has been described as very hard by the Jets and very hard also by the Los Angeles Rams.
- 1:55:30I guess the this is an artificial turf by the way and the brands are different. One for instance the one in Miami is softer.
- 1:55:39They have a little more bounce in it but it's also rather slick and they water it down here in Dallas.
- 1:55:45This type of artificial turf is harder. Wide to the right bell. Wide to the left caster.
- 1:55:57Bob Davis with John Riggins and Emerson Boozer back into the setback.
- 1:56:02Or Cliff McClain rather. Here's a handoff to Riggins. Riggins hits the left side on a slant.
- 1:56:06Crosses the 45. Goes to the 43. Tony Smith makes the tackle.
- 1:56:13D.D. Lewis helping out on the play. Ball is put close to the 40. No 43 yard line. That's where it will go down.
- 1:56:21A gain of two and a second down and eight for the Jets.
- 1:56:26Ike Thomas returned the opening kickoff 101 yards to set the stage for the Dallas Ross this afternoon.
- 1:56:34Bell to the right.
- 1:56:38Caster wide to the left. Davis a handoff to McClain. McClain right to the middle.
- 1:56:43Banging into D.D. Lewis the linebacker. Bumbles a ball. Caster picks it up. Caster picks up another five, six yards.
- 1:56:49Down across the 25 into the 24. Courtauld Green stop Rich Caster who picked up the fumble by Clifford McClain.
- 1:56:57And a break like that's a little late in this game Sam.
- 1:57:00That's a fine play but I'd hate to see them try to do it again. It looked like it was planned.
- 1:57:05First down to the 24 yard line in Dallas territory. That's a little late for Jet fans that is.
- 1:57:11I would imagine this afternoon we have a lot of Dallas fans listening in around the world.
- 1:57:15And the Cowboys have really rolled this afternoon. Wide receivers out both ways.
- 1:57:20Bob Davis a handoff to Riggins. Riggins bangs into the right side. D.D. Lewis meets him straight up.
- 1:57:25And the Cowboys pile him up at about the 22.
- 1:57:31D.D. Lewis held him up. Courtauld Green came over the top.
- 1:57:35Toady Smith, Bubba's little brother was in there.
- 1:57:40The game is two. Second and eight at the 22.
- 1:57:44Leroy Caffey is down as a linebacker, middle linebacker.
- 1:57:49For Leroy Jordan. Leroy Caffey has moved around a little bit. He's a nine year veteran from Texas A&M.
- 1:57:55Bell to the right. Caster to the left. Maynard out of the game.
- 1:57:58Gary Arthur now the tight end to center for the left side in place of Pete Lamond.
- 1:58:02Here's a fake handoff to Riggins. Davis throwing for the end zone for Eddie Bell. It's incomplete.
- 1:58:07Battling for the ball was Herb Adderley who was covering.
- 1:58:12And he had Eddie Bell well covered we might add.
- 1:58:16Third down and eight for New York.
- 1:58:19Cowboys lead 45 to 10. Pete Lamond will come back in for New York.
- 1:58:26Gary Arthur goes out. Arthur a second year man from Miami of Ohio.
- 1:58:32Well on those long fly patterns like Eddie Bell just ran the quarterback tries to throw it up.
- 1:58:37Give the ball some height so it clears the defensive man and he tries to throw it over the inside shoulder of the receiver.
- 1:58:44The defensive man Renfer was in that position so Davis I think threw it.
- 1:58:49Tried to throw it over the outside shoulder but Bell just couldn't hold on to it.
- 1:58:52Davis to throw he's going to have to run out of the pocket he's still looking for a receiver throws it up in the air and out of the end zone intended for Lamond.
- 1:58:59And that's the only thing he could do because everybody was covered.
- 1:59:02So Davis found the guy he could throw the ball toward but he threw it clear out of the end zone because Lamond was covered well by Mel Renfro.
- 1:59:11And Dave Edwards was playing that Lamond head to head the line of scrimmages.
- 1:59:14Lamond was split about five or six yards to the right.
- 1:59:17So Edwards was back there with him too step by step.
- 1:59:20Now fourth down eight Don Maynard comes in Pete Lamond will go out.
- 1:59:26That'll give the Jets three wide receivers.
- 1:59:30Twelve minutes forty eight seconds left to play in the game.
- 1:59:34The Cowboys lead the Jets forty five to ten.
- 1:59:36It's been strictly a Cowboy ball game the Jets have not been in it.
- 1:59:40Cowboys lead in the first sixteen seconds seven and a half things.
- 1:59:44They led twenty eight to nothing at the end of the first quarter.
- 1:59:46Here's a slot to the right back to pass Bob Davis Davis in the pocket is looking is in trouble and he gets the ball away but the play is blown dead.
- 1:59:58Bill Gregory the left tackle brought him down to the 31 yard line and the Cowboys take over the football.
- 2:00:07Bob Davis is limping heavily as he is helped off the field.
- 2:00:12Davis is limping very heavily so the Dallas fans may see Joe Namath again as Davis is being carried off the field.
- 2:00:18There's a turnout on the field to score Dallas forty five to York ten.
- 2:00:24Davis is being helped off the field by John Schmidt Winston Hill.
- 2:00:28And of course he had that bad ankle last week he just may have re-injured it.
- 2:00:33I have words shortly you know the rule is that the plus or minus factor in the takeaway and giveaway ratings in pro football generally will reflect the standing of the team.
- 2:00:44Give or take a few percentage points.
- 2:00:46However Cincinnati which has been stirring things up in the American Football Conference is central division after a seven game losing streak is the club which is testing that rule and the Jets I think also the Bengals have a four and seven mark.
- 2:01:01They were very good and two games off the pace three weeks ago that they had a one and seven mark and no one was bothering to figure out how many games they'd have to make up to generate a bit for another playoff berth.
- 2:01:12They have a plus fifteen they lead the American Football Conference in giveaways which is surprising with that poor record.
- 2:01:19The Jets also have a plus ten they're in third place and of course they have the poor record also.
- 2:01:27Joe Namath is talking to head coach Lee Bubank he is starting to limber up that right arm so apparently he will come on when the Jets get the offense out there again.
- 2:01:35Craig Morton and quarterback for Dallas.
- 2:01:36Sins Alworth wide to the left.
- 2:01:37Bob Hayes to the right.
- 2:01:38Dallas leading 45-10 in the fourth quarter.
- 2:01:41Hill and Walsh are now the setbacks for Dallas.
- 2:01:44Here is a handoff to Hill on a reverse swing around the right side gets a block.
- 2:01:48He's at the 30-35-40 and knock out of bounds on the 42 yard line.
- 2:01:54Rodney Wallace who has replaced John Nyland the left guard was a man out front leading the play a gain of 12 and a first down for Calvin Hill.
- 2:02:06So Calvin Hill moves the ball to the 42 Lance Alworth goes out.
- 2:02:10He is replaced by Gloster Richardson whose brother Willie is currently performing for the Baltimore Colts.
- 2:02:16Gloster Richardson came from the Kansas City Chiefs to Dallas in exchange for Dennis Holman.
- 2:02:23First down of the Dallas 42.
- 2:02:26Hill has carried 11 times for 62 yards in his return to the Dallas lineup.
- 2:02:31He has been out since the third game of the year.
- 2:02:33In motion to the right goes Gloster Richardson.
- 2:02:36Craig Morton fakes goes back to throw.
- 2:02:38He's in the pocket.
- 2:02:39He's going to throw long for Bob Hayes and it's too long at the 15.
- 2:02:43He was covered by John Dockery.
- 2:02:47Second and 10.
- 2:02:49The clock showing 11-40 to play in the game.
- 2:02:51Well no one has ever questioned Craig Morton's ability to throw the football.
- 2:02:56In fact that was the word on him for so many years.
- 2:02:59He had a great arm, all the potential, big, strong, could see over the offensive line.
- 2:03:03But he just doesn't hit his receiver.
- 2:03:05And I think it was a question of poise and confidence.
- 2:03:08He just didn't have what it takes to sit back in that pocket and really guide a football team and put points on the scoreboard.
- 2:03:15But he throws.
- 2:03:16That pass was overthrown but a perfect spiral.
- 2:03:20And he threw it about 45 yards I guess.
- 2:03:22Morton is 0-2.
- 2:03:23Bob Hayes is now 0-4.
- 2:03:26Hayes to the left.
- 2:03:28Being covered by Dockery.
- 2:03:30Head to head to the line of scrimmage.
- 2:03:31Morton goes back to pass on second and 10.
- 2:03:33Good rush and they hit him and he gets stormed under.
- 2:03:35He really gets bowled over.
- 2:03:36Way back inside the 30.
- 2:03:38Mark Womans leading the charge.
- 2:03:40John Little is in there.
- 2:03:41Bill Wise's safety blitz coming.
- 2:03:44They really overpowered him.
- 2:03:49And the ball will be spotted at the 28 yard line.
- 2:03:54The Jets sent everybody but trainer Jeff Snedeker on that one.
- 2:03:59The way the Jets have been moving people around in that defensive secondary and the linebackers and the line.
- 2:04:06Bill Wise may have been a defensive end.
- 2:04:07Who knows?
- 2:04:08Now he was in the defensive secondary blitzing.
- 2:04:14Now it is third down for Dallas and 24.
- 2:04:22The loss of 14.
- 2:04:24Bob Hayes to the left.
- 2:04:29And Craig Morton going back to throw.
- 2:04:31Morton shutting the screen.
- 2:04:32Throws it to tight end.
- 2:04:33Ditka to 30.
- 2:04:34Ditka being chased up the sideline.
- 2:04:36Greg Packers at the 40.
- 2:04:38He's at midfield.
- 2:04:39He goes down to the 45, goes down to the 41 of New York.
- 2:04:44He goes out of bounds all over on the 43.
- 2:04:47Steve Cannon finally stopped it.
- 2:04:49Mike Ditka on a tight end screen.
- 2:04:54He just blew people over along the way.
- 2:04:5629 yards in a first down.
- 2:04:58They had a third down in 24.
- 2:05:01And Morton gets 29 on the play.
- 2:05:04Gloster Richardson is back in.
- 2:05:05Alworth goes out.
- 2:05:07First down of the jet 43 yard line.
- 2:05:14Cowboys out of the huddle.
- 2:05:15Ten minutes, 20 seconds left to play in the game.
- 2:05:17Richardson coming to the right.
- 2:05:19Hayes to the left here is a handoff to Claxton Welch.
- 2:05:24And he bangs across the 40 to about the 37.
- 2:05:27Brought down by Mark Lomas to defensive right end.
- 2:05:29Pull in New York.
- 2:05:32Gain is about five.
- 2:05:34Second down and five yards to go.
- 2:05:36Richardson out.
- 2:05:37Alworth is in.
- 2:05:39Forrest Gregg is now in the game and left tackle.
- 2:05:41The old pro from SMU in place of Tony Licio.
- 2:05:46Well, it looks like the Jets have another injury.
- 2:05:48That injury jinx continues.
- 2:05:50Gus Holliman again leaving the field with Dr. Nicklaus holding his hand.
- 2:05:55So it looks like another hand injury.
- 2:05:57Cowboys 21st on.
- 2:05:59Morton fakes, goes back to throw.
- 2:06:01He's throwing back to Bobby Hayes on the 22.
- 2:06:04The utility is up.
- 2:06:06What about the 19 on a jarring block by Phil Wise.
- 2:06:09Bob Hayes making a first reception of the day.
- 2:06:13And the Cowboys have a first down on the Jet 19.
- 2:06:17Twenty-four yards on that one.
- 2:06:21And Craig Morton is moving the Cowboys.
- 2:06:23Gloster Richardson comes in.
- 2:06:24Lance Alworth goes out.
- 2:06:25So now they're doing the switching, carrying the plays in from Tom Landry.
- 2:06:29Cowboys lead 45 to 10.
- 2:06:31They've controlled the ball now for the last several minutes moving on the ground
- 2:06:35and through the air behind Craig Morton.
- 2:06:37After 45 points were posted on the board by Roger Stauber.
- 2:06:44Now the Cowboys set in an eye with a wide receiver to the left
- 2:06:47and Richardson going in motion to the right.
- 2:06:50Stauber straight handoff to Wells.
- 2:06:52Oh, he got hit as he took the handoff by Chuck Hinton and Jared Cockford.
- 2:06:57And Jerry Philbin and Mike Ditka are looking at each other.
- 2:07:00What a hit by Chuck Hinton.
- 2:07:04No game.
- 2:07:06In fact, he lost the yard at the 20.
- 2:07:08Second, 11.
- 2:07:10Richardson out.
- 2:07:11Alworth in.
- 2:07:13Well, watch Mike Ditka and see if he comes out and lines up on that side once again.
- 2:07:17Of course, he alternates.
- 2:07:18He doesn't line up over Jerry Philbin on every play.
- 2:07:22He is coming out.
- 2:07:23We'll see what happens on this next play.
- 2:07:25Alworth to the left.
- 2:07:29Now he switches in the slot left with Hayes going wide to the left.
- 2:07:32Now Alworth goes in motion to the right.
- 2:07:35Morton takes a snap.
- 2:07:36Morton backed up.
- 2:07:39Going over the middle.
- 2:07:40Alworth.
- 2:07:41Touchdown.
- 2:07:42What a beautiful strike by Alworth.
- 2:07:44Steve Shannon was in the area and Alworth stood right in front of him like a bullet.
- 2:07:5170 yards, 8 plays and the Cowboys are on the board again.
- 2:07:55A 20 yard touchdown pass from Craig Morton to Lance Alworth.
- 2:08:08So now the Cowboys lead 51 to 10.
- 2:08:12As the Jets are absorbing their worst beating.
- 2:08:16And Mike Clark makes it 52.
- 2:08:18So there's a turnout on the field.
- 2:08:20The score, the Dallas Cowboys 52, the New York Jets.
- 2:08:24Where you going?
- 2:08:27Mobile gasoline takes you where you want to be.
- 2:08:36When a little engine part like an anti-pollution valve gets clogged with dirty deposits, you can expect trouble.
- 2:08:42Because a dirty anti-pollution valve can make your engine idle rough and stall.
- 2:08:47But there's something you can do to help prevent this kind of rough idling and stalling.
- 2:08:52Use mobile.
- 2:08:53It contains a detergent that cleans your anti-pollution valve while you drive.
- 2:08:58Mobile detergent gasoline.
- 2:09:00It can help your car's performance.
- 2:09:18Dallas has scored again to now lead the Jets 52 to 10.
- 2:09:23Craig Morton has hit three out of five passes for 68 yards.
- 2:09:26And he just hit Lance Alworth for 20 yards at a touchdown.
- 2:09:31So with a 52 to 10 score, Mike Clark is kicking off for Dallas.
- 2:09:34Chris Farisopoulos and Vern Studdard are deep for New York.
- 2:09:38Farisopoulos out of BYU.
- 2:09:39He's born in Athens, Greece.
- 2:09:43Here's Clark forward.
- 2:09:44Downfield comes the football.
- 2:09:45High but not deep.
- 2:09:46Farisopoulos on the nine.
- 2:09:48To the 15, to the 20.
- 2:09:50Farisopoulos 25.
- 2:09:52Get the left side tackle as he crosses the 25.
- 2:09:56And the tackler was Rodney Wallace.
- 2:09:59And he goes down on the 27.
- 2:10:03Joe Neyland back in at quarterback now for New York.
- 2:10:06Has not played since the first quarter when the Jets went down by 28 to another.
- 2:10:11Well, we've got a report on Josh Holmaman.
- 2:10:14He may have a broken wrist.
- 2:10:17It hasn't been determined, but anyway, he's in the locker room at this point.
- 2:10:21So Namath brings Boozer and Riggins out with him.
- 2:10:25Maynard right, Caster to the left.
- 2:10:29Namath calls the play.
- 2:10:30John Schmidt over the ball.
- 2:10:32First down on the jet 27.
- 2:10:34Namath, a handoff to Riggins.
- 2:10:36Riggins hits the left side on the slant, gets to the 31.
- 2:10:40And it's still on his feet.
- 2:10:41And Gregory stops him and the whistle stops the play.
- 2:10:47Weebubank running out on the field talking to the official about something.
- 2:10:53I don't know what this is about.
- 2:10:54Steve Tannen was yelling something to Weebubank who went out and talked to the official.
- 2:11:02And somebody is now running over to the jet bench.
- 2:11:07Somebody is hurt down on the jet sideline.
- 2:11:10We can't see who it is.
- 2:11:15But play is stopped and an oxygen can is being brought over by the Cowboys.
- 2:11:27John Fitzgerald, the Reserve Center, ran that all the way across the field.
- 2:11:32Yeah, Merle, we said that Doc Nicklaus was in the locker room with Gus Holliman,
- 2:11:37that possible broken wrist.
- 2:11:39He came running back on the field.
- 2:11:41He wasn't there when the injured player came off the field.
- 2:11:44I can't see who it is.
- 2:11:46So the game has been held up here in Dallas.
- 2:11:50We'll try to get a report for you just as soon as possible.
- 2:11:56But Steve Tannen was running out on the field even before that play was dead.
- 2:12:01And Weebubank was out there too yelling to the officials.
- 2:12:04And the official immediately ran to the Dallas bench.
- 2:12:07And I presume the Dallas team physician was the gentleman who was called over to the sideline.
- 2:12:15Looks like Vernon Studdard is the injured player, the ailing player right now.
- 2:12:25So the game has been held up here in Dallas where the Cowboys lead the Jets by a score of 52 to 10.
- 2:12:35And they're now bringing a stretcher out of the ambulance that's being brought out on the field.
- 2:12:54So Vernon Studdard will be removed, the ambulance now being brought around.
- 2:13:06And the game being held up, nothing going on here right now
- 2:13:17until first aid has been given to the injured player.
- 2:13:26What a day this has been.
- 2:13:28Boy oh boy.
- 2:13:30You know you think the one year you go through the thing the Jets went through last year injury wise
- 2:13:35and you think well that's it, it can't happen two years in a row and it did.
- 2:13:39And now you almost wonder if it can happen three years in a row.
- 2:13:52So now Vernon Studdard being removed and the ambulance.
- 2:14:04I don't know if he was hit on that last return as a blocker for Peristopolous or not Sam, I really didn't see it.
- 2:14:09No I didn't see him leave the field either Murrow.
- 2:14:12I imagine he walked off under his own power, otherwise we probably would have noticed it.
- 2:14:21We'll try to get a report for you just as soon as possible.
- 2:14:25Murrow talking of injuries there are a couple of old Jets around the hotel yesterday.
- 2:14:30Dean Mackey for one and Kerley Johnson and Carl McAdams.
- 2:14:34And I asked McAdams how that ankle was, of course he had broken that ankle in the All-Star game
- 2:14:40and he had skin grafts and all kinds of problems.
- 2:14:43And he still after I guess two years now that he hasn't played football, he still says it does bother him.
- 2:14:50He says one day it feels fine, the next day he has a problem walking.
- 2:14:55Well we're ready to resume play now and the edge has been taken off everything but let's all hope that Vernon Studdard will be okay.
- 2:15:03Second down, sixth to call. Joe Namath at quarterback for New York.
- 2:15:07Maynard to the right, Caster to the left.
- 2:15:09We're in the fourth quarter in Dallas. Maynard a handoff to Riggins.
- 2:15:12Riggins hits the right side, gets knocked down on the 35 and bounces out to the 36.
- 2:15:16Leroy Cappy the middle linebacker makes the stop.
- 2:15:21Now the ball is lined up just across the 35 yard line where it becomes third down, less than two yards to go for the first down.
- 2:15:27Carl McAdams by the way is coaching football at a small college in Durant, Oklahoma.
- 2:15:32Dean Mackey is coaching also at the high school level here in Texas.
- 2:15:35Just have had a lot of people over the years from Texas.
- 2:15:40Maynard going to the right, Caster wide to the left.
- 2:15:43Lamons are tied in to the side on the right side, Namath at quarterback calling signals.
- 2:15:47Riggins and Mouser split.
- 2:15:50Here's a handoff to Mouser.
- 2:15:51Mouser fumbles a ball after he had the first down and Dallas recovers on the jet 44.
- 2:15:57D.D. Lewis the linebacker, pounced on the ball on the 44 yard line of the jet.
- 2:16:04Now this just isn't the Jets day. You know, Dallas, we'll get to it later then.
- 2:16:11Alright Sam, we have a timeout on the field now.
- 2:16:13And the score, the Dallas Cowboys 52 and the New York Jets 10.
- 2:16:20Mobile gasoline gets you where you're going.
- 2:16:28Mobile gasoline takes you where you want to be.
- 2:16:38You know what fouled spark plugs can do? They can make your engine waste gasoline and lose power and mileage.
- 2:16:45But you don't have to worry about fouled plugs because Mobile Premium has an anti-fouling agent designed especially for spark plugs.
- 2:16:54We put it in our premium gasoline to help keep your spark plugs from fouling.
- 2:16:58So use Mobile Premium gasoline. It can help your car's performance.
- 2:17:05Mobile gasoline takes you where you want to be.
- 2:17:21The Cowboys take over the football after the fumbles on the 44 yard line of the jet.
- 2:17:26Joe Williams, a rookie from Wyoming, and Claxton Welch, a third year man, are now the running backs.
- 2:17:31Wide receivers out both ways. Four Dallas, Craig Morton and quarterback.
- 2:17:35A pitch going to Williams. Williams at the 40. Gets dumped hard on the 38 yard line.
- 2:17:41Ebersole was on the tackle along with Granton. Bob Hayes threw a block there.
- 2:17:47We'll pause briefly now for station identification on the jet set network.
- 2:17:52You're listening to New York Jets football from WTRY FM 106.5 Albany, New York.
- 2:18:02Pearl Harman with Sam DeLuca, Texas State even Dallas.
- 2:18:06And Dallas has just been hit with a five yard penalty for being offside.
- 2:18:09Delefying the game and a five yard penalty tacked on making it first and 15 for Dallas on the jet 49.
- 2:18:16The worst beating the Jets have ever taken previous to this game was 52-31 by the old Dallas Texans, now the Kansas City Chiefs in 1962.
- 2:18:25Here's a handoff going to Williams. Williams on the sweep to the right, cuts in, goes across the 45, gets hit on the 42 and bounces to the 40 yard line.
- 2:18:33Ralph Baker was in on the stop for the yard along with Paul Crane.
- 2:18:40So Joe Williams gets about eight yards near the 40, Ebersole now coming out.
- 2:18:46Of course the Jets really weren't the Jets in 62 either, they were the Titans.
- 2:18:52I think that San Diego scored about 51 points against the Jets back in 1963.
- 2:18:58I don't remember the score of the game but I know that was the first year they were called the Jets and they were beaten badly in the old pole ground.
- 2:19:05Here's Morton on a handoff to Williams and Williams bangs right through the middle across the 40 to the 37.
- 2:19:10Bill Wise makes the stop for New York, the rookie from Nebraska at Omaha.
- 2:19:18Now Dallas will have third down and about three.
- 2:19:25A week from tomorrow the Jets will take on the New England Patriots at the Big Shea in New York.
- 2:19:3112-35 for the Don Crickie Show followed by Sam DeLuca in pregame highlights.
- 2:19:37Going wide to the left, Gloucester Richardson to the right is Bob Hayes, Lance Alworth out of the game now.
- 2:19:42Craig Morton back to pass on third and three, he's in the pocket throwing it to the middle to Ditka for a first down.
- 2:19:47Ditka on the 31 is stopped right there.
- 2:19:51Larry Grantham makes the tackle but Ditka has a first down of the Jet 31.
- 2:19:59Thomas has led since the opening kickoff when Thomas ran it back 101 yards.
- 2:20:03That's Ike Thomas, the rookie from Bishop, which is right here in Dallas.
- 2:20:07He ran one back against Los Angeles on Thanksgiving Day on the opening kickoff.
- 2:20:14First down near the 30 yard line.
- 2:20:16In fact they now smooth the ball ahead to the 30.
- 2:20:19Bob Hayes coming into the slot left with Gloucester Richardson wide to the left.
- 2:20:23Flaxman-Welch and Joe Williams in the eye, here's a pitch going to Williams. Williams on a right end sweep crosses the 30,
- 2:20:31gets to the 25, John Little makes the tackle for the Jet.
- 2:20:35Rodney Wallace who is now playing right guard for Dallas, led the blocking.
- 2:20:41The game is 6, it'll be second down and 4 for the Cowboys.
- 2:20:45Three minutes 29 seconds left to play in the game, 66,689 have looked on today as Dallas is beating the Jets badly.
- 2:21:02Here's a slot to the right, Cowboys in the eye, Hayes wide, Richardson coming in motion out of the slot back to the left.
- 2:21:09Here's a handoff going to Flaxman-Welch, bangs straight ahead, won't go down until he crosses the 20 and gets the first down of the 18.
- 2:21:17Bill Wise making the tackle for the Jets and it's another first down and Forrest Gregg, the old pro that had so many great years for the Green Bay Packers
- 2:21:24and lives here in the Dallas area, led the block on that one.
- 2:21:28First and 10 of the 18 we ever report on Vernon Stuttered.
- 2:21:32He has a lacerated tongue, appears to be okay, but he has been taken to the hospital for treatment and we hope to have a further report.
- 2:21:46But the initial report he appears to be okay.
- 2:21:49Here's a pitch going to Williams, Williams at the 20, Williams at the 15, Williams to the 14, down to the 13 yard line.
- 2:21:57John Ebersole, the middle linebacker making the tackle.
- 2:22:03The ball put down near the 13 yard line.
- 2:22:07Clock is running, we're down to 2.06 remaining in the game.
- 2:22:10Sam DeLuca will be along after the game to report from the jet locker room.
- 2:22:14And we'll have a further report on Vernon Stuttered.
- 2:22:19Right now we have a timeout for the two minute warning.
- 2:22:27Well, we have another report on Stuttered. He has not been taken to the hospital as yet.
- 2:22:30He has been taken to the dressing room.
- 2:22:32Although they did put him in an ambulance, he was taken to the dressing room.
- 2:22:36It'll be determined later whether they will remove him to the hospital or not.
- 2:22:40So the report is not as serious as we thought it might be when the game was first stopped and the Dallas team position came over to administer to the stricken jet.
- 2:22:56First down on the 13 yard line of New York when play has resumed, Dallas now has really put the heat on the Washington Redskins.
- 2:23:04This victory for Dallas will give the Cowboys their ninth win of the year against three losses.
- 2:23:08And Washington will go into the game tomorrow against the Giants with a record of seven, three, and one.
- 2:23:14The Giants go into that game with a similar record to the Jets going into this one.
- 2:23:20Both teams were four and seven, but the Jets now, of course, will be four and eight.
- 2:23:24The Jets have two more games to play against the New England Patriots a week from tomorrow at the Big Shea and then against the Cincinnati Bengals on the closeout.
- 2:23:32Then Weebubank and his staff will start thinking about the draft of the 1972 season already.
- 2:23:40Cowboys lead by a score of 52 to 10.
- 2:23:45Cowboys guided by Craig Morton.
- 2:23:49Morton takes the snap, gives on a handoff to Williams.
- 2:23:53Williams hits the left side, crosses the 10.
- 2:23:55Ebersole brings him down near the six yard line.
- 2:23:58Joe Williams, a rookie from Wyoming, and Gloucester Richardson turns blocker on that one for Dallas.
- 2:24:04And they're going to bring that ball back to the eight yard line.
- 2:24:08He was all the way down to the six, but they bring it back to the eight and that'll call for a measurement.
- 2:24:12John Mooring, a rookie from Tampa, will come in to play a middle guard now for New York.
- 2:24:17First down for Dallas by the length of the football.
- 2:24:21A minute 46 seconds remaining to play here at Texas Stadium.
- 2:24:24Much of the crowd has filed out.
- 2:24:26This game was settled a long time ago, as early as the first quarter when Dallas moved to a 28 to nothing lead.
- 2:24:34And wiped out what could have been a very interesting show by Joe Namath because Weebubank down that far was taking no chances.
- 2:24:42And pull Joe. Wide receivers out both ways, a pitch going to Joe Williams.
- 2:24:46Williams at the five, puts his head down, ramps to the three.
- 2:24:50Steve Tannen and John Dockery make the tackle.
- 2:24:55It'll be second and goal to go now for Dallas.
- 2:24:59And the ball will be put down on the three yard line.
- 2:25:02Joe Williams, another one of those real tough running backs out of Wyoming.
- 2:25:06And if you need to be reminded of another one who came from Wyoming, I can only mention the name of Jim Kick.
- 2:25:12Who is one of the finest running backs in the game.
- 2:25:17Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Jim Kick and Larry Zonka.
- 2:25:23Second and goal on the three. Morton calls it. Morton a pitch to Williams.
- 2:25:27He is hit by Larry Grant them back on the seven and plunges forward to about the four.
- 2:25:32Mark Lowe is putting the kill on him.
- 2:25:34Grant them firing through to trip him up.
- 2:25:38He's brought down the four where it'll be third and goal to go.
- 2:25:41We have 32 seconds remaining in the game.
- 2:25:43And the Cowboys running a long huddle and the natives are restless.
- 2:25:47They want to see another touchdown on the scoreboard.
- 2:25:49Cowboys are letting the clock run.
- 2:25:52Craig Morton in company with 19 seconds remaining.
- 2:25:55Come out of the huddle.
- 2:25:57John Fitzgerald who's in at center is over the ball.
- 2:26:01Now they're 10 seconds left.
- 2:26:04Hayes going into the slot right.
- 2:26:06Morton calling it. Five seconds to go.
- 2:26:08Morton takes the snap and he gives to Wells.
- 2:26:10He is hit on the four. Dumped back to the six.
- 2:26:13The clock has run out.
- 2:26:14Everthol makes the final tackle and it's all over.
- 2:26:18So there's the end of the ball game.
- 2:26:20And the final score, the Dallas Cowboys, 52, the New York Jets, 10.
- 2:26:27Now we'll take a look at the scoring.
- 2:26:28It all started on the kickoff.
- 2:26:30Hite Thomas who had run back a long one against Los Angeles on Thanksgiving Day
- 2:26:38ran back an even longer one this afternoon tying an all-time Cowboy record.
- 2:26:43He scooted 101 yards on the opening kickoff.
- 2:26:47And the extra point put Dallas in front seven and I think only 16 seconds had elapsed in the game.
- 2:26:53Then Dallas got possession again and in seven plays Roger Staubach marched Dallas 86 yards for a touchdown.
- 2:27:02And the touchdown came on a 27-yard pass to Calvin Hill.
- 2:27:06Dallas led 14 to nothing. 813 left to play in the first half.
- 2:27:12Then Staubach hit Hill again on a 27-yard touchdown pass to Dallas and 21 to nothing at the 634 mark.
- 2:27:19And with 314 left to play in the first quarter,
- 2:27:23Dwayne Thomas scored on a 3-yard smash and Dallas led 28 to nothing at the end of the first period.
- 2:27:29That's when we view bank full Joe Namath figuring there was no, absolutely no use in taking a chance on getting Namath injured
- 2:27:38since he still is at very little combat and this field here in Dallas being very hard.
- 2:27:46And as I said I'm sure that his thinking was and Sam DeLuca will have the story on it that no chances.
- 2:27:54After all Joe has been through too much in the last two years.
- 2:27:57So down 28 to nothing at the end of the first quarter.
- 2:27:59Dallas winning at 35 to nothing in the second period going 85 yards on 10 plays.
- 2:28:05Dallas scoring his third touchdown this time on an 8-yard run.
- 2:28:09Then Bobby Halfield got the jets on the scoreboard with a 35-yard field goal with a minute 46 left to the first half.
- 2:28:16But now Clark wiped that out on a 45-yard field goal, Mike Clark rather, on a 45-yard field goal with a one second left on the clock.
- 2:28:29And at halftime Dallas was in front 38 to 3.
- 2:28:33In the third quarter Stalbach threw an 18-yard strike to Dwayne Thomas as he marched Dallas 65 yards on 7 plays
- 2:28:42and the Cowboys moved out front 45 to 3 with 10.58 to go in the third period.
- 2:28:48Bob Davis operating at quarterback for New York threw a one-yard touchdown pass to George Knox to make it 45-10.
- 2:28:56Davis has taken the jets 55 yards on 10 plays.
- 2:28:59The third quarter ended with Dallas at 45-10.
- 2:29:03The only touchdown, the only scoring in the fourth quarter was a 20-yard pass from Craig Morton to Lance Alworth
- 2:29:09who today became the second man ever to hit the 10,000-yard mark in reception.
- 2:29:17The other being of course Don Maynard who went into the season as the only man ever to gain 10,000 yards plus.
- 2:29:23But Alworth also moved into that select company with two receptions and going over the 10,000 mark.
- 2:29:34So that last touchdown made it 52 to 10.
- 2:29:37Joe Namath had to come back when Bob Davis was injured.
- 2:29:41But very little happened. The jets had the ball for only one series.
- 2:29:45The fumble turned it over to Dallas and then Dallas grounded out, killed the clock.
- 2:29:49And 52 to 10 was the final.
- 2:29:53Looking now at the other statistics on the ball game.
- 2:29:58Joe Namath threw only five passes while he was in, completed one for 20 yards and had an interception.
- 2:30:04Bob Davis hit four out of 14 for 29 yards and one touchdown.
- 2:30:09And the jets had but 49 yards through the air.
- 2:30:13The leading rusher for New York, John Riggins with 31 yards and 11 carries.
- 2:30:19On the Dallas side of the ledger, Roger Staubach and Craig Morton combined for 245 yards of aerial bombs.
- 2:30:26Staubach hitting 10 out of 15 for 170 and three touchdowns.
- 2:30:30Craig Morton going four for six for 78 yards and one touchdown.
- 2:30:34Rushing, Dallas had 170 yards, 101 belonging to Dwayne Thomas in 13 carries.
- 2:30:41And Calvin Hill had 11 carries for 62 yards.
- 2:30:44Hill scored three touchdowns today. Dwayne Thomas had two.
- 2:30:48And the Cowboys have now put even more pressure on Washington in the Eastern Division of the NFC with its win today.
- 2:30:55Dallas down 9-3, Washington 7-3-1, going into the game tomorrow.
