So many people probably be listening to this and they've probably listened to our voices
• 0:06
in there, ears for a very long time. Sounds quite intimate to know, like there is someone's
• 0:11
ears. Yeah, hello. It's us. Wow, that was not man. But if you have, but you're still maybe
• 0:21
a bit on the fence of the best thing or you still want that little bit of hand holding,
• 0:25
like we totally get it. It takes a while to get comfortable, it takes a while to get
• 0:29
confidence, but we thought, why not create a club to help bridge that gap? And so we've
• 0:36
created a curving besting club and we want you to be part of it. We want you to go from
• 0:41
in our ears to in our club. Yeah, yeah. If you want to find out more about what we talk
• 0:46
about in the club, we've got all sorts of things like investing ideas to, you know, market
• 0:51
insights to just like a real sense of community where you can ask questions, you can see
• 0:56
what other people are investing. It's a really cool space. So we'll put the link in the
• 0:59
podcast show notes for you to find out more and we do have a seven day trial. So there's
• 1:03
no excuses. You can try before you buy. Perfect. We will see you in there. Do you remember
• 1:10
this episode? Oh, she was so great. Isn't she awesome? She's probably going to listen
• 1:16
to this and be like, actually, if you're so fee, I was really shocked at how clued up she
• 1:22
was with money and investing and like the way she speaks to her kids about it. Like I
• 1:27
was, I don't know why I just, I don't naturally expect people to know stuff. She had so many
• 1:34
insights and I really, I was like very impressed with this episode. Just with the amount of knowledge
• 1:40
she had and shared and tips and things that she does with her family. Yes, it was really
• 1:46
eye-opening, interesting. And that's what we love about having every guest on is that
• 1:50
you never really know where the conversation is going to go. True. And then it goes there.
• 1:54
I think this was one of our funny episodes. So this is one from the archives. It's from
• 1:59
a couple of years ago, but it's a goodie. I want to go listen to it again, too. Same
• 2:02
issue. Same issue. The style, Jake. Maybe so from Vic. Yeah. We had a few left wrinkles back
• 2:07
then, didn't we? Can you stop talking about my wrinkles? I feel like you bring them up so
• 2:11
much. It's making me feel great. And my gray hairs don't worry. Yeah. So we've got Sharon
• 2:18
Casey in studio. Who? As an old friend, we used to work together at MediaWorks, which
• 2:23
is so, it's so nice to see you. You know, and you're like, God, we need to catch up more,
• 2:27
but then it's like seven years. Yeah. Like it's been so long. You've had two babies.
• 2:32
Whoa. I know. But when my first proper producing job, Shares was the news girl on breakfast
• 2:39
for JJ McIndon. So we were all up like in our trackies, looking like absolute asshole,
• 2:44
trying to make our way through like the morning, living the best life. I was at that point,
• 2:47
also the music director and the days homes and also kind of like did stuff for their
• 2:51
breakfast show. They really got, yeah, they really got their money's worth. Yeah. You can
• 2:55
do this and this and this. Yeah. Totally. Oh my god. That's so funny. But you've worked
• 3:00
there for 17 years in terms of salaries and pay rises and that kind of thing, because
• 3:04
a lot of people would never have been in their job for that long. You know, it's quite
• 3:08
rare, I think, for people often in jobs, you, the reason you get pay rises or you leave
• 3:13
is because it's been a money, right? But you love your job. Obviously, you wouldn't
• 3:17
be there still if you didn't. How have you managed that in terms of, from a financial
• 3:21
standpoint, where you can still feel valued and sort of see pay rises? I mean, heavy
• 3:27
head pay rises. How has that kind of worked over the years? My first contract I signed when
• 3:32
I was working for more of him in the wider upper was $21,000 a year. And I don't know how
• 3:38
I survived all that. But my rent was $100 a week. I lived in Macedonia. We had a four-bedroom
• 3:43
house for a hundred bucks a week. So $100 a week. I know. I remember at university,
• 3:49
my flat was $80 a month. So fab. We had like a full sleep out front
• 3:53
Yeah, backyard. It was sick. But yeah, so I started off there. And then when I came to
• 3:59
Auckland my first job at the edge, I started on like 30 grand a year. And I started at the
• 4:04
edge on 35. Yeah. So I think that it was really instilled in my sisters and I like our
• 4:10
whole life where you, you are what you negotiate. So you have to keep like hustling. And if
• 4:17
you work really hard, then the goods will come. I love that. And so I was kind of like, well,
• 4:22
I got 21 grand. Now I get 30 grand. And then I remember going, I was doing days. I was
• 4:28
the music director. I was running the station. I was doing days music director reading news
• 4:34
and I was helping like with the breakfast show at the same time. And I was, I think I was
• 4:40
getting like 45 grand or something to four different jobs. And I went to and I was working
• 4:45
weekends. And that was the first time I really, like, went in and sold myself to my boss and
• 4:50
like, did a standoff kind of negotiation. And how did that feel? Was it terrifying? I absolutely
• 4:57
hate talking about money in those situations. Like if I go to buy a car, like with my husband,
• 5:02
I will ask all the questions that I want to know about the car. And when it comes to the
• 5:06
  negotiating part, I just walk away because I don't like, I don't like, I think it's because I
• 5:11
was like bullied at school. I don't like confrontation. And I only have confrontation with people.
• 5:15
I feel comfortable having confrontation with, which is pretty much just lay on our big
• 5:20
boss at work and Bryce, my husband. I kind of, that was my first negotiation. And lay
• 5:24
on was like, okay, cool. And he was really good about it. And then once I like move to drive,
• 5:30
that's when I started to use Liz, my agent, because I don't like having those conversations.
• 5:35
She knows what the market value is. She is better at that stuff. And then I can just focus
• 5:40
on my job and she negotiates that for me. And does she take a fee for that? Yeah.
• 5:44
Yeah. So you pay them a percentage that you negotiate. And, and that kind of just comes
• 5:49
out of your thing. But for me, I would earn less money than my commission if I didn't
• 5:56
use her. Like so she's worth her weight and gold. And she's just a great support person
• 6:00
to have like a favor, have any conflicts that I feel like I can't handle by myself.
• 6:04
She's like my, my backup. And she comes and helps me and stuff. So she's like, yeah,
• 6:10
I would pay her half if I could. But yeah. But she, so with that, I think I've always just,
• 6:16
my motto has been like, you are what you negotiate. I earn enough to pay my bills. I earn enough
• 6:22
to be happy. I don't want to work somewhere where I'm miserable just in a bit more money
• 6:28
for a short amount of time. Like I love working for the people that I work for. I love the
• 6:32
people I work with. I love the brand I work for. And so for as long as I'm happy, as long
• 6:37
as I can dot my eyes, cross my toes, whatever, then that's cool with me. I guess, but my
• 6:43
family says never really been driven by money in that way, which we've always been driven
• 6:47
by like happiness and loyalty, if that makes sense. Yeah. I honestly would say I think
• 6:51
you're one of the most loyal people I know, which is interesting because I know we haven't
• 6:55
hung out in a long time. But you know, those people who are so, you know, you would never
• 6:59
hear you say a bad word about the people that you love and who are close to you. And I think,
• 7:04
and there's not really annoyed. Yeah, but I think, but I think that's different. It's like,
• 7:07
you're, it's more like ingest, you know, and I truly think like for so many of your friends,
• 7:13
you would stand in front of a bus for them like, so, so, so loyal. And that's actually quite
• 7:17
rare. And I think especially in the media industry where it can be quite competitive and a lot of
• 7:21
your good friends are within the industry. There is kind of a scarcity mindset. I mean, I think
• 7:26
there's the female side of things where it's like there's not that many female co-hosts. So there's
• 7:29
the whole like, well, you know, I don't want to lose my job. And I think that feeds into not taking
• 7:34
as much maybe parental leave as you might want to have or, you know, you might not take time off
• 7:38
because you're scared you might not get another job, which is so fair enough because if you look at
• 7:42
the radio industry or the media industry and New Zealand and you pick out who are the top female
• 7:47
presenters, there's not a huge amount of spots for that. So I get that. But then to on top of that,
• 7:51
be super loyal and encouraging of the people around you and teaching and nurturing young talent,
• 7:58
I think that is like one of the greatest, not talents, but I think it's just such a lovely
• 8:04
quality to have in an environment that unfortunately sometimes can feel quite competitive.
• 8:08
Yeah. And I think that it was like maybe made competitive by men totally.
• 8:15
If that makes sense. So I like, with parental leave, for example, I took, but I remember talking
• 8:21
to you because you were working for Carl and Jackie. Oh, when I was pregnant with my first time,
• 8:23
Tyson, and I was like, oh my god, I'm like, really scared. I'm going to lose my job, blah, blah, blah.
• 8:28
But when I actually, that's such a crazy mindset. But it's a mindset, no, but it's also a
• 8:34
mindset not just with immediate, like, even my friends that are, you know, with agencies or work
• 8:40
in retail, like, same thing. I think is like, if you've built your career and then you're, but like,
• 8:44
you're about to have a child, which is most amazing thing in the world, and you're like, yeah,
• 8:47
I'm still going to have my job. But when I vocalised that, like I said to, like Leon, who's
• 8:53
our big boss, I was like, I'm really like, we've been out for breakfast. And I was like, I'm really
• 8:57
worried. Like, I don't want you to replace me. Like, what can I do? Well, I'm away. And he was like,
• 9:01
here's like, how long do you want to take off? And I was like, honestly, Leon, I'll take like 12
• 9:04
weeks. I'll just take 12 weeks. And he was like, Sharon, I'm going to, I'm going to block you out
• 9:07
for a year. And you just come back when you want to come back. Oh my god, bless. And I was like,
• 9:11
I promised you I'll only do three months. And he was like, Sharon, I don't expect you back
• 9:15
six months. He's like, I don't want an answer before six months. He's like, just enjoy it. You
• 9:19
only get it once. And I was like, okay. So I ended up after Tyson. I got to five months and then I
• 9:24
was like, can I come back after I've had a holiday? And so I ended up having eight months off.
• 9:29
And it wasn't a problem. But also I was working with John on being at the time. And they were
• 9:36
incredible because they both have kids. They've had wives that went on maternity leave. And they
• 9:40
were amazing. They would text me all the time. They would call me all the time. They came over
• 9:45
and visited me. And they were really supportive. And and John I was, John I was especially,
• 9:51
and Ben as well, they were very much like, no one's going to replace you. We can't wait to have
• 9:56
you back. And they were really awesome. Kind of the support and the reassurance you needed.
• 10:02
So that was really great. And so then we know we're not maternity leave with Ruben. I, he was
• 10:08
premature. So he was like 11 weeks early. I was in hospital for six weeks before he was
• 10:11
even born. And they were again, they were great. They're like Sharon, radio doesn't matter.
• 10:15
The only thing that matters right now is you and the baby. So just do it. Do you think that that's
• 10:19
like a because they've had kids they get it. And they obviously love their children and their wives.
• 10:24
Or do you think that because like I think even if someone who has had kids or is in a relationship,
• 10:29
I'm just so amazed with that kind of response. Like I, I don't think it's the norm yet.
• 10:34
No, I think it's individualized. I think it depends on the human. Even like my friends that I know
• 10:39
at Mediwis for they went on holiday. I know that they've been told by Leon. They're like,
• 10:45
you've got to, I hope you don't mind, I'm saying this, sorry Leon. But he'll be like, hey,
• 10:48
make sure you cash out your annual leave before you go because at a cruise while you're on maternity
• 10:53
leave. So if you don't use it now, when you come back, it'll be worth nothing. So cash it out now.
• 10:57
So you get it at the full rate. Oh my god. I just think that is like the key to good management.
• 11:01
And a lot of people don't know that. And so a lot of people would take their annual leave and come
• 11:05
back and be like, I've only got a quarter of what I would normally get paid. So he would always
• 11:09
be like, you've got three weeks annual leave, cash it out so you get it at its full value.
• 11:14
And you're like, okay, great. But then there are so inspired by that because I just think there's
• 11:18
so many bosses where you hear stories that are kind of horror stories. To hear, there's like
• 11:23
someone that's so in your corner that feels almost like a, not a dad, but kind of, you know,
• 11:28
it doesn't lead us to me. But then you get employees that stay for 17
• 11:32
years. Yes. And that's it. You treat them well. And that's like you can't put a price on that.
• 11:37
And that's to be honest, that is a huge part of why I have stayed at media works and a huge part
• 11:44
of why I love working the edge is because I've always had, Leon's always been such a great
• 11:49
manager to me, human to me. And he tells me the harsh truth when I need it. We've definitely had
• 11:55
our ups and downs. But I love that if it came to it, he would have your back in a situation.
• 12:01
And I love that about him. Leon doesn't sponsor this podcast. He doesn't.
• 12:05
  And I don't have a, I don't have a contract up either. So he's already fucked. He's stuck with
• 12:10
that. But there's also, there are women with that out industry that have had, you know,
• 12:15
they go on maternity leave for like three months and then they come back. And a lot of people think
• 12:19
it's because they're scared they're going to lose their job. But it is actually because they're
• 12:21
the breed winners in their house. So they come back and they're because you can split maternity leave.
• 12:27
It doesn't have to be the woman. It can be, you could do six months, they do six months.
• 12:32
And so like a couple of my friends that have done like the three months maternity leave,
• 12:37
their husbands have been to stay at home dad. So that's why they've gone back. But a lot of people
• 12:41
because they're used to like the woman has to take a year off. They're like, oh,
• 12:45
they've come back early because they're insecure. They've come back because they're coming back
• 12:49
because the other ones making the money and the dad is being to stay at home dad. And I think
• 12:53
that's amazing. I think it'll be really interesting when pay becomes very equal. And that isn't
• 12:58
a gender pay gap because at the moment, obviously, there's a lot of women who are earning less than
• 13:03
men and therefore financially it makes sense for them to be at home mums because maybe child care
• 13:08
is more expensive than what they're doing. Oh my gosh. I was talking to a friend the other day and
• 13:11
she was like, she's had a witsend with her job and she's like, you know what? You literally pay
• 13:15
me the amount that I pay to daycare. So I'm literally like neck neck. She's like, I could be at home
• 13:20
with my kids and not working, not paying for child care. She's like, but more mentally. She's like,
• 13:24
I need to stay at work for our mental sanity and my career and all that. But she's just like,
• 13:30
you know what? Child care is so expensive. That's so expensive. I was just going to say because
• 13:36
you and Bryce, so Bryce, you know, on the doesn't know is Sharon's husband of gosh, I don't know,
• 13:39
10 years, a long time. Bryce is also a, would we say radio media personality of some description?
• 13:45
Do you guys obviously talk about a salaries and compare that? And then also, I'm curious
• 13:50
to know what your setup is financially and how and does that work for you? So we moved in together,
• 13:58
must have been like a year or something that we were together. Man, no, we moved in together
• 14:02
within like 18 months. And when you know, you know, when you know, but from the moment we moved in
• 14:09
together, we just merged everything. And which was a high risk scenario for Bryce? Because he
• 14:16
owned, he owned an apartment in Ponsome. So there was no like, I said to him before we got married,
• 14:23
I was like, do you want to do like a, yeah, like do you want to do like a, a prena, because you were,
• 14:29
he's like, no, I was like, well, if we break up, it means I can take half, he's like, we won't break
• 14:34
half. And I'm like, okay, you're risk. I am actually going to take. Bryce is like super good with
• 14:43
money. From the moment we moved in together, it was like, okay, you get this much spending money
• 14:49
per pay, I get this much spending money per pay. And was that based on percentages of what you
• 14:53
earn or how did you do that? No, so just even. So he get paid, I get paid, put it together, you
• 14:59
both get 100 bucks for petrol, 300 bucks, spending money. That's so good. And then your bond
• 15:05
what if you got for dinner? It's like, oh, can you pay? Can you pay for dinner? Yeah, you're
• 15:10
money. And then I, so we even, we do that now, like to even to this day, as soon as I get paid,
• 15:15
I take what is the budgeted spending money. I pay my credit card and I, if I have a phone bill
• 15:21
or like gym or something like that. And then I give him all my money and he just like does
• 15:25
something. Honestly, honestly, when ever somebody dies, I'm always like, my first thought is like,
• 15:30
oh, if Bryce dies, I don't even know who her power is with. And I always go to him like, Bryce,
• 15:37
can you just make sure you leave somewhere the password in your will? Can you just leave all the
• 15:42
passwords? Just write a list of who the power is with. So good. When I pay, do we pay water?
• 15:48
I was like, you just leave all that shit, okay? Like what the butter bank password? I don't even have
• 15:53
access to our savings account. Because if I had access to our savings account, I'd be like,
• 15:59
oh, $100 for Sharon, $100 for Sharon. So it's, yeah, so we have all of that, like sort of,
• 16:07
like we just put it all together because we kind of look at each other, look ourselves as a team.
• 16:11
If we go out for dinner now or if we go out together, then yes, I don't even take my card.
• 16:17
Bryce got it. Bryce slash me. Yeah, but it's like all of our stuff together. And so, yeah,
• 16:24
but we do do a thing where if I do a tally job, then when I get paid for that, I, and now Bryce
• 16:32
as well, because he's usually stuck at home with the kids while I'm doing it or whatever,
• 16:35
I get to buy like a luxury item. What do you choose? So I could be like, so you get paid and then
• 16:42
you'll be like, oh, I might get that deadly pony handbag that would be wanting for a long time.
• 16:45
And so it's something like that, but it's all, or it might be, we'll have a weekend away,
• 16:50
or a fun splurge, basically. Yeah, so basically it's something that you wouldn't buy normally,
• 16:53
but it's like, yeah, so I've got this really cool, like purple,
• 16:57
dearly pony's bag that I bought in 2015 or something. And I wear it all the time and he runs,
• 17:02
I was like, oh, Adam was like, I got this feeling I did dancing with the stars. And it's like a tattoo,
• 17:06
except it's a purchase. Yeah, pretty much. And I got these really cool, like, um,
• 17:09
Chira Faringi, I don't have a pseudonym, right? I don't even know that brand, do you know that brand?
• 17:13
She's like a designer, but she's, so they's really cool, like, the black kind of encrusted.
• 17:19
Did she get the tall blonde bill? Yes, and there's got a bird, one's got a burger, and one's got chips,
• 17:23
but they're like $300 shows and I felt like a real burgy bitch.
• 17:26
It's a, so that's kind of like where the treaty treats kind of come in.
• 17:31
It's like, I think that's awesome because you probably don't,
• 17:33
Bryce probably doesn't budget for those jobs on television because they're,
• 17:37
they're an added bonus, right? It's like a 10 week filming for dancing with the stars,
• 17:41
or whatever. It's not actually your yearly salary anyway. Yeah, and you never know when it's
• 17:45
going to happen. And also, like, when COVID happened, I lost a quarter of my income and a one-minute
• 17:50
fun call. What was that? When dancing stars got canceled. So it was like, wow. Because of COVID,
• 17:55
and it was like, I literally, I remember getting told, I mean, like, oh, and then hanging up,
• 18:01
and then looking at my phone, and it was like 48 seconds or something. I was like, I just lost my
• 18:05
job in 48 seconds. And it was a lot of money. Because I was just like, hey, just letting you know,
• 18:09
you're going to get an email about this blah, blah, blah. And I was like, oh, fuck, okay,
• 18:12
cool. And then that happened like a couple of times. And then you might like the next year,
• 18:17
like this year, I don't know if I've got any TV happening this year. So you can't really,
• 18:22
we never, it's like your pocket money opposed to your like relied upon it. We don't rely on it
• 18:26
because TV is so fickle and comparison to radio. It's like, radio is your wife and TV is your
• 18:31
mistress. Yeah. That's how Leon's always described it. And I think it's very fitting.
• 18:36
Do you have an emergency fund by any chance? Or do you know if Bryce has an emergency fund?
• 18:41
Oh, I like saving it, Bryce. So we have savings, but also have like income insurance as well.
• 18:47
Yeah, okay. Yeah. Because it's like a lot of that would have happened to a lot of people and then
• 18:50
but it would have been all there in come or you can get government support. But like, yeah,
• 18:55
it's quite, it's quite scary. And especially when you've got two kids to be like, oh my gosh,
• 18:58
I've lost a quarter of my income. Yeah. And then definitely like a lot of our friends, does that
• 19:01
were like comedians and stuff during COVID? That was the thing. You've got to always have like
• 19:06
rainy day fund. We like slam our mortgage as much as we can and stuff like that because we know
• 19:10
that our jobs are so fickle that you could like if you don't get good ratings or whatever,
• 19:17
you've got to just make, hey, well, the sun shines, you know? So you're super model. Do as
• 19:20
much as you can because it could be gone like that. And then you've gone from earning like a good
• 19:25
salary to being like, oh, fuck, like, and that's my thing. I always had a brush. It's like,
• 19:30
we need to know how to do something else. Do you make an effort to upskill so that if something
• 19:35
happened, you could step this way or like, what's the sort of process for you around that?
• 19:40
Every time before I sign a contract, I always at radio, I always think, do I still love this?
• 19:47
Am I going to want to do this for another whatever year to him I'm going to sign?
• 19:51
Do I want to do this every day? Is this going to be the greatest thing I want to do?
• 19:55
If I didn't do that, what else could I do? And then I kind of like list off and be like,
• 20:00
okay, what life do I want to live right now? And right now, I'm like, I want to live that life.
• 20:04
I want to do radio. So I'm like, sign it radio until I'm like 40, so like another three years.
• 20:10
And then when I get to there, I'll be like, do I still want to be on air? Do I want to have a
• 20:14
behind the scenes jobs? So that's why I've like earlier on in my career, I did programming when
• 20:18
I was music directors, and I love the programming side of radio as well. So if I lost my job on
• 20:23
here, I could slot back into a programming job tomorrow. I could do on ear coaching, I could do sales,
• 20:29
sales session, podcasting, podcasting. You know, like there's, I look over a curve and turn,
• 20:35
by the way. I could lose my job tomorrow. And so if I lose my job tomorrow, what would I do?
• 20:41
Because there's so many people that are on ear that that's all they've done for
• 20:47
how long? It's quite a niche. Yeah. And then once that's gone, it's like, oh, what do you do? Like
• 20:52
heaps of broadcasts going to real estate afterwards? Like and to that? Yeah, like there's heaps of
• 20:59
like old broadcasts like Royden Christie. He's a real estate agent that used to be on breakfast.
• 21:04
Hey, much McCoy. He's been, yeah, there's heaps of them because you've got the gift of the gap.
• 21:09
You probably make more money being a real estate agent too. But yeah, so I do have that in my mind,
• 21:14
where I'm like, okay, when am I going to do? How long do I want to do this? And does that give you
• 21:18
the security or peace of mind to have the confidence to either a negotiate what it is you want and
• 21:23
you'd work way for? But also knowing that your job isn't defining you in every sense of the word?
• 21:30
Yes. Yeah, definitely. Because I think as females, we do not sell ourselves short, but it's like,
• 21:37
the job is the, yeah, the job is the be all and end all. And it's like, I think it's,
• 21:40
if you figure out what you love and what you're good at, then you know your talents, you know your
• 21:45
skills and you can kind of adapt and mold that into something else, should then it will happen
• 21:51
that you do lose your job. And so it's kind of knowing like, did you say any of it or as if it's
• 21:54
going to happen? I feel like everybody does lose their job eventually. You know, like everyone gets
• 21:59
made redundant or they retire or whatever. So you've got to be able to do something else, right?
• 22:04
It's knowing that you're smart or you've got a talent that can be repurposed.
• 22:08
Yeah, it's just having an emergency parachute in case you need it. You may also just be stuck
• 22:13
in a situation that makes you desperately unhappy. And why would you, you spend most of your time
• 22:18
at work if you could do something else and not everyone has that luxury and I totally understand
• 22:23
that. But if you could do something else, why would you spend most of the time doing something
• 22:29
that damages your brain? You know, and that's your heart or, you know, and I'm part of who you are.
• 22:34
I've definitely had, I've definitely had times where I'm like, you know what? I fucking love this,
• 22:40
but I don't love it enough for it to make me this unwell and I'm not going to fucking do it. And
• 22:45
being like, okay, I don't want to do this anymore unless this changes and then they're like, okay,
• 22:49
cool. And then we figure out how to make it change. And if it hadn't changed, I would easily walk
• 22:54
away from it. And just, I think that's super inspiring. Yeah. But also, but I'm lucky because my
• 23:00
husband has a job. You know, there's a lot of people that might not be in that scenario, but I
• 23:04
would have easily been like, fuck this because I know what it's like to be like very depressed and
• 23:10
anxious. And I don't want to, yeah, I don't want to spend most of my time away from my family.
• 23:17
And then coming home and being a piece of shit for them because I'm unhappy. And so I'm,
• 23:21
that's my thing I'm like, I refuse to do that. I would rather go on work full-time at Cheetah and
• 23:26
love my best life because I would love to just design people's cushions. Imagine that just
• 23:32
counts to get and then you're loud. Oh my god, they're gonna mean it just counts. Oh my god,
• 23:36
I love it. You've probably looked into it like I won't put it fast. I have, I've like, honestly,
• 23:40
there's been times of my life where I'm like, no, fuck it. I'm gonna see if Cheetah's good job. I
• 23:43
don't just stop back to front. I'm on their website every day is gawking at cushions. I don't
• 23:48
do that because Sharon was in the house for 2.5 seconds. She was like, excuse me, where did
• 23:52
you get that chested rules from? We were at cyborg. We were at cyborg. You want to sell it? Let me know.
• 24:01
Hey, you've got two gorgeous little kids. In terms of money, your relationship with it, what do you
• 24:07
think are some of the key things that you want to pass on to them or help them understand when it
• 24:11
comes to their relationship with money? So we will not ruin it as so much because he's only
• 24:18
like 15 months old, but Tyson's five and pretty much from when he was old enough to kind of
• 24:23
understand, we give him jobs and he has to earn a coin like he earns like a total or something.
• 24:29
It could be as something as little as stacking the toilet paper away after the that's his job.
• 24:34
You know, and he has like a couple of jobs that he does bless his heart. He sets the table at night
• 24:39
time and he stacks away the toilet paper and now he starts school. He helps me make his lunch at
• 24:43
night time. Basically, he would get that and we put it in the money box. And so he had to say,
• 24:48
he really wanted to go and see the glow worms at way to more caves. And so it took him a year,
• 24:54
but he had to save up for his ticket and then he had to save up for his accommodation and
• 25:02
petrol. He's going by himself and he's going to get it because if you've got to pay
• 25:06
petrol and Danny's car and like it's also it's so if we're going like safe, we're going on trips
• 25:10
to the Gold Coast, he would have to save up for this part. He'd have to save up for part of his
• 25:15
accommodation. He thinks he's paying for it, but he's not. But it's just so that he learns how to
• 25:19
save money. And we'll go to the warehouse and he goes like, he's like, Mama, I want to get this
• 25:24
hot wheels car and I'm like, okay, we'll have you got four dollars in your money box. And he's like,
• 25:28
oh, and I'm like, well, you make the decision. If you want to buy that, that's fine,
• 25:33
but you have to give me four dollars in your money box and we get home. And so he sits here and
• 25:36
he thinks about it and he's like, that's so good. And then he might do it. And then as soon as we get
• 25:40
home, I'm like, go get your money box and he has to give me the four dollars. Sharon, I reckon that
• 25:44
it's one of the coolest things I've heard in a long time. But that's because that's what my
• 25:48
parents would do for me. We'd always be like, asking for money and then our dad was like, okay,
• 25:53
we're going to give you $20 a week pocket money, which at that time was a shit ton of money. We were
• 25:58
like, oh, fuck, we're so rich. And he would give us $20 a week pocket money and we weren't
• 26:03
allowed to ask for anything else. And so that was it. So you had $20. If you wanted to go ice skating
• 26:08
and spend all that night, that's your 20 bucks gone. But you get $20 pocket money. We're not
• 26:12
giving you a cent more, cent less. If you want more than that, then you have to get a job. And
• 26:16
it was the same before you wanted to buy label clothes. This is my mum would call them.
• 26:19
Is that like, glasses or something? No, more like, you know, if you want to get like a bill of
• 26:23
long topples. Oh, good. Rip, rip, rip, rip. Rip your ball. Bumbora for all all to put it.
• 26:27
Some dickies. Yes. If you wanted any like a label clothing, you had to buy it yourself. And so
• 26:32
mum would like, take us to the mall every week. We got our pocket money. We'd have to like,
• 26:36
lay by like, I bought this Roxy jacket. I got this Roxy jacket. And it was like $220. And I had
• 26:43
to pay it off on lay by, I still have it. And I use my friends from high school mock me relentlessly.
• 26:49
You wear it? Nah, it's so fun. I wore it everywhere. My friends are like, all I remember,
• 26:54
like my memory from you from high school is your Roxy jacket and holiday menthols. Because I'd
• 27:00
always like smoke holiday menthols. It's so cool. But I still have it because it's like the first
• 27:05
thing I ever bought myself. And it's got like cigarette burns and shit in it. It's like, you see
• 27:10
baby, but yeah, stained as fuck. But I love it. And it's so symbolic. Yeah. And it's like, that's
• 27:16
the first thing that I worked really hard for and paid off by myself. Yeah. Oh, I just think
• 27:21
the idea of teaching kids, I think it's super hard to find the right way to do it where it's going
• 27:25
to sink in and they're going to care. Like, my parents bless their heart really, really tried. And
• 27:30
it just didn't for some reason. I battled until 30. Just really didn't know what's with my money.
• 27:36
And how to save and how to spend an invest. And I think, yeah, it's such an art and so much time
• 27:43
and effort that goes into teaching a younger generation about that. But I feel like you're
• 27:47
nailier. That sounds awesome. Yeah. My dad was like, my dad worked and worked in banking before
• 27:51
he was retired for like 40 odd years. And his thing was like, you should save, I think it was like
• 27:56
20% of your pay, which isn't like super. That's what you say, isn't it? It's quite hard to do that.
• 28:00
Now, but he was like, even if you save $2 from your pay, as long as you save something,
• 28:06
it has to, don't just save nothing. So if you save two bucks in your pay, you've saved something
• 28:11
for a roady day. And that's what we say. Like everyone's feeling the pinch at the moment and
• 28:15
everything's so bloody expensive. Oh, yeah. And it's like, you know what, if you need to cut back
• 28:19
from investing $10 a week, then at least just cut it back to like $2 a week. But don't stop
• 28:25
completely because it's then so hard to emotionally and like psychologically. Yeah. Get back in the
• 28:31
habit. Get back in the habit. Yeah. And I've different me done that with a cut back. And I'm like,
• 28:35
oh, this month, you know, like, I've got a lot of expenses or I need to, I've got a lot to pay for,
• 28:39
I want to lose my money. And before I know it's six months, and I'm like, gosh, I'm like,
• 28:42
I haven't got back into the habit. And then, and then when you do start getting back to him,
• 28:46
you're like, oh, you know, it's like the big chunk of your salary going out again each month.
• 28:51
Or if you're a spender, give it to somebody who won't let you touch it. Like, I had this,
• 28:56
I had this year. No, even like worse. So I really, really wanted this black deadly ponies backpack.
• 29:03
And this is back ponies. This is like a 2016 day or something. And I really, really wanted it.
• 29:08
And it was so expensive. And Bryce was like, get fucked. He's like, you are not buying a backpack
• 29:14
that expensive. You're not going to use it that much. You're going to use it for a year, blah, blah, blah.
• 29:18
Anyway, so I said to my mum, it's like, mum, I want to save it for this backpack. It's out of stock
• 29:23
at the moment. I'm going to give you 50 bucks a pay until I have enough. So I would give it to her.
• 29:28
She wouldn't let me touch it. Even if I'd be like, mum, I need that $50 back. I'm going to
• 29:31
manage that. Nope. Backpack. Okay. Eventually saved up for it. I've got the backpack here.
• 29:37
I've been using it for eight years. I use it every single day. Like here here, right now.
• 29:41
Yeah. I'm like, you're on your couch. It's my work bag. I take it to work every day. And it's like,
• 29:46
but I had to give that money to my mum. And because if I put it in my own account, I would have
• 29:49
spent it. And then if I gave it to Bryce, he'd be like, you are not spending eight hundred
• 29:52
hours on a fucking backpack. We're talking about this the other day. And so I was like, can you be,
• 29:57
can you look after my money? And I'll give you my savings. And then every time I want to spend
• 30:00
something, I have to ask you. I'm like, yeah. Oh, okay. It's an amen. But if you give it to somebody
• 30:05
that doesn't care, like I give it to my mum. And it's like, easy as like she would just make that.
• 30:10
We need to talk about this later, because I think it says this is a necessity. Yeah.
• 30:13
All my mum's hot fire tip, which taught me how to budget was, so say you get a hundred dollars
• 30:19
a week, spending money. So you get your spending money out in cash. And then you go to the bank,
• 30:24
and you get, I would get, because I wanted to buy my lunch every day. So I would get $10 a day
• 30:31
per paid. So say you get paid four nightly, I'd get $100 worth of 10 dollar notes. So that's
• 30:37
$10 a day for work. And then $50 per weekend. And then I had two plastic bags in my, like, little
• 30:44
money bags in my jewelry box. Every day I'd take a 10 dollar note out. And then when I went to town,
• 30:48
I'd take the 50. And that was all I could spend. And a holy shit. It was like game changer. I never
• 30:54
needed to ask anyone for money. And it just really taught me how to, like, that's a brilliant
• 30:59
thing. Yeah. She's like, if you can see it, it's better than, especially now with payway.
• 31:03
I think it's psychologically back in the day, it would have been a lot easier to say,
• 31:07
because you were literally handing over money, whereas now you just tap or you're like, yeah,
• 31:11
it's just kind of emotionally different. I think. You're disconnected from the outside
• 31:16
out of mind. Yeah. And you check your bank balance goes, oh my gosh. $50 last
• 31:21
until next Wednesday, like, Jesus. Oh, yeah. I don't think this will sound particularly shocking
• 31:27
to people, but you can't save enough to have a million dollars. I mean, you would have to have
• 31:33
a pretty ginormous salary to be able to get to that amount. Yes. But average person, you and me,
• 31:39
we can't. Sorry, sorry. Probably could save us way to a million dollars. So if you're listening
• 31:44
to a lot of us, you can drag on. Please stop listening. But the reason that a lot of us are not
• 31:51
able to grow wealth is because we're relying on savings rather than investing. So if you've been
• 31:56
listening to this podcast for a while and you're like, do you know why I really would love to get
• 32:00
some more investing ideas and I, or I want to learn to invest and feel more confident.
• 32:05
Envesting club is a really fun, cool place to join a bunch of like-minded women, but also have
• 32:12
the expertise of fact, it was like moderating everything, doing all the research, coming up with some
• 32:17
moderating sounds like there's something. It sounds like bro, coming for true. No, but it's cool,
• 32:22
like the amount of people that are asking questions and having like thoughts on different
• 32:26
investment ideas, like it's a really awesome place to learn, but actually also invest in things.
• 32:31
So, and it's completely, we're gonna friendly as well. Yeah. If you are interested in learning more,
• 32:36
we'll put a link in the podcast show notes, but also the is a seven day trial. So you can just jump in
• 32:41
and have a look and see what it's about to make sure it's right for you. All the details are
• 32:45
in the podcast show notes. Feel there. Can I say one last tip? Of course. If your parents tell
• 32:53
you to invest in something, invest in it. Okay. So my parents, and we do it for our kids as well,
• 33:01
my parents when we were born would put $5 or $10 a week into a bank account anyway. So when we
• 33:07
got older, our dad was like, you've got the, and we wouldn't like to touch it until we're 18.
• 33:11
And he was like, you've got this much money in your bank account, Auckland's building this new airport,
• 33:16
would you, I'm gonna put some buy some shares. Do you want to buy some shares under your name
• 33:21
for $1,000? And we're like, yes. So we bought shares for $1,000 in Auckland Airport and tripled it
• 33:26
and it paid, and it paid for my radio school. And then I sold him my, so he still fucking got
• 33:32
them, but I sold my shares to him to get my, to pay for radio school, but you'd get like,
• 33:37
you know, your checks every year, which was great. But he invested us in that contact energy
• 33:42
and speaking my language. What was the other one? I don't know. But he, every investment that he made
• 33:49
for us worked. Yeah. And we were really lucky. I mean, he worked in banking and his whole job
• 33:55
was crisis care management for like really big companies and farms and shit. But he was really
• 34:01
good at it. And every time he gave us a tip at the time, we were like, I don't want to get some
• 34:05
$1,000 in my money. But then I think it's because it's like a long term, they've got a long term
• 34:11
view. Or you're like, look, you invest in it when you're going age, you can't get it to 18,
• 34:14
which is like, I don't know, maybe 10, 15 years away. And so it's kind of locked in for that period,
• 34:19
whereas we find it when we're quite hard when we're older to not touch an investment for that long.
• 34:24
So it's like when you're, when you're a kid, you're out hanging with your friends and stuff,
• 34:28
you're not thinking about your investments. So when it's kind of done for you or taking care of
• 34:33
for you or that's why we always say that I can be spent a long time. Yeah. And if you can get
• 34:41
your Kiwi saver on your banking app so you can see how much money you have in there. Do you reckon
• 34:46
because I find I'm like, oh, I'd love to dip into that. Because I don't know how to dip into it.
• 34:50
But I see it. And I'm like, fuck your sharing. You're going to grease when you're retired. So
• 34:56
every week when I see a kid bigger, I'm like, oh, yeah, this is my doing life. And I feel like I'm
• 35:01
doing it, you know, and we have, like both our kids have Kiwi saver as well. It's like something
• 35:06
that Bryce's dad does for them, which is a privilege to not acknowledge that. But yeah, if you have
• 35:10
your Kiwi saver on your banking app, you can see how much it's growing. And it just makes you like,
• 35:14
fuck your pay my Kiwi saver. No, but my mum also brought me contact energy
• 35:19
shares when I was very young. And it's, I don't think I made a lot of money off, and I can't
• 35:23
quite remember. But I think it was more the psychological psychology of the dividend checks arriving
• 35:31
in the mail. Yes. And I was like, oh, my God, I'm just getting money. Yeah. And he's just
• 35:34
flowing in. And this is great. It would have been like, I don't know, like $20, $20, but I'm like,
• 35:39
cool. I remember getting one for 53 bucks once. And I was like, um, I'm going to clients.
• 35:44
If you don't know what clients is, then you're too young. It's basically what Lobby so was in the
• 35:49
90s. Oh, I don't know. I feel like I'm not being young. Okay. Neither. I don't know what it is.
• 35:55
Sharon, I'm aware that you are a fury, busy girl. And you're a good girl. But thank you so much
• 36:00
for coming on. And like, yeah, it's been great. It's been so fun. I thank you for coming in.
• 36:05
Thank you. And also sharing those like amazing tips. Yeah. Thank you. Beggies for my money.
• 36:11
Yeah. Here's amazing. Yeah. Yeah. Not like the way you normally get them. What? Excuse me,
• 36:17
I do not buy any other types of beggies. So you know, you're made of salad.
