Latest / Foul Territory / Trade Predictions + Former Mets HC Eric Chavez unveils what’s wrong
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: He was a great player and then was doing a
- 0:09Speaker 1: great job hitting coach with the New York Mets, who
- 0:12Speaker 1: have gutted really everybody now from their coaching staff over
- 0:15Speaker 1: the past year. Eric Schabez joining us right now and
- 0:17Speaker 1: excited to get into a number of topics. But obviously, Eric,
- 0:20Speaker 1: as you know, you went a little viral in the
- 0:21Speaker 1: past twenty four hours. You were on an EC three
- 0:23Speaker 1: pod just laying it out, which I think a lot
- 0:25Speaker 1: of people want to hear right now. So great to
- 0:27Speaker 1: have you on, dude. Great to catch up again, and
- 0:29Speaker 1: I want to jump right in if you don't mind,
- 0:31Speaker 1: Can you just summarize a little bit of what you
- 0:33Speaker 1: went over over the past forty eight hours in terms
- 0:36Speaker 1: of turmoil with the Mets that goes beyond what we're
- 0:39Speaker 1: even seeing here publicly in the roster construction issues.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I met, you know, obviously with the Mets, there's
- 0:46Speaker 2: kind of always something going on. But to be honest
- 0:50Speaker 2: with you, the reason why I stepped out yesterday and
- 0:54Speaker 2: kind of smoke out was Carlos is tremendous. I was
- 0:58Speaker 2: a big fan of Carlos, got to know him with
- 1:01Speaker 2: the Yankees organization, and I think he's a really good
- 1:05Speaker 2: baseball guy. You know, I just I kind of feel
- 1:08Speaker 2: like in this situation, you know, there's a lot of
- 1:13Speaker 2: good baseball people that are in this game, and kind
- 1:16Speaker 2: of analytically, you know, there's been a huge wave over
- 1:19Speaker 2: the last you know, fifteen years, and we're losing a
- 1:22Speaker 2: lot of good baseball people. And you know, I David
- 1:26Speaker 2: got you know, he got tabbed pretty pretty early. You
- 1:30Speaker 2: know that he was a genius and he's and he's
- 1:33Speaker 2: extremely smart. But there's just been a whole stack of
- 1:37Speaker 2: moves that have that have gone wrong, you know, and
- 1:41Speaker 2: and sometimes that happens, but you know, there are how
- 1:45Speaker 2: many people are gonna good baseball people are going to
- 1:48Speaker 2: continue to lose their jobs while we're kind of waiting
- 1:50Speaker 2: for you to deliver what everybody said you could deliver.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And so this is for me kind of going out
- 1:57Speaker 2: in defense of you know, obviously the coaching staff from
- 2:00Speaker 2: the year before got got fired. Really really good baseball
- 2:04Speaker 2: people work extremely hard, been in the game a long time,
- 2:08Speaker 2: you know, and Carlos was kind of the odd man
- 2:11Speaker 2: out this time. You know, it was pretty predictable that
- 2:14Speaker 2: this was eventually going to happen. I think David did
- 2:17Speaker 2: hold on to Carlos a little bit longer than maybe
- 2:20Speaker 2: fans would have wanted, so kind of credit to him
- 2:22Speaker 2: for doing that. But you know, this is you know,
- 2:25Speaker 2: Carlos is a good baseball man. I hate to see
- 2:27Speaker 2: it happen. You know, the Phillies fired. You know Rob Thompson,
- 2:31Speaker 2: who's another really good, you know baseball guy, and it
- 2:35Speaker 2: probably you know, sometimes a move does need to be made.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I'm not saying, you know, firing somebody or even like
- 2:41Speaker 2: myself from the year before. You know, you make subtle changes.
- 2:45Speaker 2: You don't make household changes. I think that's really backfired.
- 2:49Speaker 2: If you know, if if you had just fired me
- 2:51Speaker 2: from the year before and made a move or two
- 2:54Speaker 2: on the coaching staff, maybe you move one or two
- 2:58Speaker 2: players of those core players from the Mets, you know,
- 3:02Speaker 2: I think would have been probably the right move to make.
- 3:04Speaker 2: So you know, this is like I said, this is
- 3:06Speaker 2: just me in defense of Carlos. What a good baseball
- 3:09Speaker 2: person he was. I enjoyed my time working with him,
- 3:11Speaker 2: and I know he's going to land on his feet
- 3:13Speaker 2: again with a big, big job here soon.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Hey Chovy, I love that you're doing this too, because
- 3:20Speaker 3: obviously there's a saying you can't fire all the players.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Someone has to take the fall. And I know you
- 3:24Speaker 3: mentioned kind of the Phillies and firing their manager. But
- 3:28Speaker 3: in the defense of the Phillies, they didn't really bring
- 3:30Speaker 3: in a bunch of new people in terms of their roster.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Maybe a new voice was needed there. Carlos didn't pick
- 3:36Speaker 3: the players that he had to manage on the field.
- 3:38Speaker 3: That is a David Stearns issue. So the fact that
- 3:41Speaker 3: you're coming to his defense saying the mander has to
- 3:43Speaker 3: take the fall. Manager can only manage the players that
- 3:45Speaker 3: he is given. And the fact that they went out
- 3:48Speaker 3: and said that they were going to kind of create
- 3:50Speaker 3: this you know, run prevention, then you have guys playing
- 3:53Speaker 3: positions that they've never really played for. It feels very
- 3:56Speaker 3: unfair for Carlos to kind of take the fall.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's that's kind of my point, you know.
- 4:01Speaker 2: And and Carlos has taken a lot of heat, you know,
- 4:03Speaker 2: over the last couple of years, and his first year
- 4:05Speaker 2: we went to the NLCS, so you know, he's capable
- 4:08Speaker 2: of taking a team to where they need to go. Yeah,
- 4:11Speaker 2: I do feel like this is a reflection you know,
- 4:14Speaker 2: front offices. Well, I can't speak about all of them,
- 4:17Speaker 2: but you know most of them now. You know, it's
- 4:19Speaker 2: it's completely changed in the last fifteen to twenty years.
- 4:22Speaker 2: They have more of an influence, they have more of
- 4:24Speaker 2: a say. They are you know, coaches used to be
- 4:26Speaker 2: involved in off season acquisitions and free agents and you know,
- 4:30Speaker 2: they'd be at the winter meetings and they would have
- 4:32Speaker 2: a voice. And it's not so much that way anymore.
- 4:35Speaker 2: You're kind of just told, you know, this is who
- 4:38Speaker 2: are who were getting, this is who you're going to play.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And that's just the way it is. It's it's where
- 4:43Speaker 2: the game's at now. And you know, I just I'm
- 4:46Speaker 2: I'm over analytics, Like I feel like it's had its run.
- 4:51Speaker 2: It and I'm not saying we need to get rid
- 4:53Speaker 2: of it. It's not going anywhere, but we just need
- 4:55Speaker 2: to put it in its place. Like there's obviously, you know,
- 4:58Speaker 2: there's benefits to having analytics and knowing numbers, but we're
- 5:02Speaker 2: doing analytical hires right There's you know, to have an
- 5:05Speaker 2: analytical uh part of your organization is fine, but we're
- 5:10Speaker 2: we're kind of heading in direction of having analytics in
- 5:14Speaker 2: leadership roles and you know, it's it takes a special
- 5:19Speaker 2: type of leader individual, somebody who's not afraid of confrontation
- 5:24Speaker 2: to kind of be a leader. And I don't think
- 5:26Speaker 2: that always Analytically, you know, some of these guys have
- 5:30Speaker 2: that type of background. And I'm not saying that they
- 5:33Speaker 2: they can't possess that, but yeah, it's just to me,
- 5:35Speaker 2: it's an unfortunate situation. You know, I I don't want
- 5:40Speaker 2: to be you know, slamming David. It's not you know,
- 5:44Speaker 2: it's you know, he did a great job in Milwaukee,
- 5:47Speaker 2: but the just the moves haven't panned out. And this
- 5:50Speaker 2: is what it's all about, right, It's players are you know,
- 5:53Speaker 2: if we're able to take a lot of heat for
- 5:55Speaker 2: making money and we're not performing well. Now you know,
- 5:58Speaker 2: you're the highest paid GM, You're you're at the forefront
- 6:01Speaker 2: of this, like you have to deliver and now you've
- 6:03Speaker 2: got to take the criticism when you don't deliver. So,
- 6:06Speaker 2: you know, like I said, for me, it's just defensive
- 6:09Speaker 2: of the coaches and the good baseball people, the boots
- 6:12Speaker 2: on the ground that do the hard work, and yet
- 6:15Speaker 2: we're kind of just subject to, you know, the front
- 6:19Speaker 2: offices and analytically the moves that they make, and we
- 6:23Speaker 2: take the brunt of it when it doesn't look good.
- 6:26Speaker 2: And so that's why I said he's running out of
- 6:28Speaker 2: bullets in the chamber, because you know, you whack the
- 6:31Speaker 2: staff from before. Now Carlos is gone. Now it's his turn.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Now it's it's you know, it's going to be time
- 6:37Speaker 2: for him to step up. And it'll be interesting to
- 6:39Speaker 2: see what happens the rest of the year. They have
- 6:42Speaker 2: a great owner. Mister Cohen is unbelievable. I really firmly
- 6:45Speaker 2: believe he's going to get his winner there. It just
- 6:48Speaker 2: hasn't worked out for David and the moves just haven't
- 6:50Speaker 2: worked out at all.
- 6:52Speaker 4: So the moves that you're talking about when you talk
- 6:54Speaker 4: about you, all we heard was dissension in the clubhouse.
- 6:58Speaker 4: We hear things like, oh, you know, this guy's got
- 7:00Speaker 4: to get out of there, and then it's perceived when
- 7:03Speaker 4: these guys leave as those were good guys. What what
- 7:07Speaker 4: exactly happened is that what you were seeing and all
- 7:10Speaker 4: that like talk from the media and outside was not
- 7:14Speaker 4: true or not as big as what people were saying.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's definitely it's definitely not as big. I mean, look, guys,
- 7:20Speaker 2: we've all been in clubhouses like, it's not always roses.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Sometimes I played in clubhouses that were unbelievable that everybody
- 7:27Speaker 2: did love each other. But you know, not every winning
- 7:31Speaker 2: team has a clubhouse that gets along, you know, not
- 7:34Speaker 2: every you know, not every player loves their manager. You know,
- 7:38Speaker 2: managers are usually disliked more than they are liked. Like
- 7:41Speaker 2: the ones that are liked are very few and far between.
- 7:44Speaker 2: So you know, yeah, there was there were some things,
- 7:47Speaker 2: but ultimately, when you lose, these things kind of leak out,
- 7:51Speaker 2: and especially in New York, everybody wants to have a
- 7:53Speaker 2: reason why things aren't going right, you know, But there
- 7:57Speaker 2: was nothing in that clubhouse. You know, stuff with Nemo
- 8:01Speaker 2: and the political stuff, and it's like that stuff like
- 8:04Speaker 2: it's so comical. It's like we just want to put
- 8:05Speaker 2: something out there for for some bait or whatever. But no,
- 8:10Speaker 2: it's it was a good collection of guys. I firmly
- 8:13Speaker 2: believe this, I really do. When David started to gut
- 8:15Speaker 2: whatever you wanted to do with the coaching staff whatever,
- 8:17Speaker 2: that was fine. But when you take a core of
- 8:20Speaker 2: the players that were beloved in that city, that grew
- 8:23Speaker 2: up in that organization, and you kind of just rip
- 8:26Speaker 2: it apart. Now you really don't have an identity, right,
- 8:29Speaker 2: and it's not a reflection of the players that were
- 8:31Speaker 2: brought in, right, the Bashets, the Roberts like good players,
- 8:34Speaker 2: maybe some injury history, whatever it is. But you can't
- 8:38Speaker 2: just you know, throw money at it, put some names,
- 8:40Speaker 2: put some players together, you know, and kind of expect
- 8:44Speaker 2: them to just kind of take off and running. Like
- 8:46Speaker 2: it's a really really hard thing to do. And then
- 8:48Speaker 2: you got a whole new coaching staff and it takes time.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Like even for me when I was there with those players,
- 8:53Speaker 2: it took me three or four years to really get
- 8:56Speaker 2: extremely comfortable building my relationship with these guys where I
- 9:00Speaker 2: can have certain conversations with them. Like, it takes time.
- 9:03Speaker 2: So I'm not surprised at all, you know, Like I said,
- 9:06Speaker 2: you look at the Phillies, right, everybody was screaming, blow
- 9:09Speaker 2: it up. These guys are too old. And Dombroski stayed
- 9:13Speaker 2: the course. He believes in his staff. He made one
- 9:16Speaker 2: pivotal move, probably one you know, emotionally that he didn't
- 9:20Speaker 2: really want to make, but he knew he needed to
- 9:21Speaker 2: do something, not gut it all out. And now his
- 9:24Speaker 2: patience and you know, his experience is kind of shining
- 9:28Speaker 2: through and they're going to make a run at this thing.
- 9:29Speaker 2: That's a really, really good team and they've done it before.
- 9:32Speaker 2: And if they have help on their side, you know
- 9:34Speaker 2: they're going to make a move at the break and
- 9:35Speaker 2: they're going to try to chase down the braves. So
- 9:38Speaker 2: just two different paths and ways of going about it.
- 9:41Speaker 2: And you got to tip your hat to Dobrawski. Like
- 9:44Speaker 2: Philly is a tough town, and they were calling for
- 9:45Speaker 2: people's heads and fire this guy and fire that guy.
- 9:48Speaker 2: And he stayed the course. He made the one big
- 9:50Speaker 2: move and it's paid off.
- 9:54Speaker 1: People dehydration sucks. Quints electrolyte stick packs to the rescue.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I order them, I use them all of the time.
- 10:04Speaker 5: Somebody who may or may not have had some adult
- 10:06Speaker 5: beverages in their life. The next day, you know what flavor,
- 10:08Speaker 5: I like watermelon, and I don't like watermelon. I'll go
- 10:11Speaker 5: raspberry and it helps me to get my citrus salt in.
- 10:15Speaker 5: But if I do, it helps me to get back
- 10:17Speaker 5: to normal, feeling good and ready to go the next day.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Yep, tough workout or dry mouth in the morning, whatever
- 10:23Speaker 1: it is, this is going to help you out. Quint

- 10:55Speaker 3: Speaking of firing or let go, I mean if you
- 10:58Speaker 3: could share what was kind of the conversation for you know,
- 11:00Speaker 3: guys like yourself and Jeremy Hefner not coming back. And
- 11:04Speaker 3: my second question is do you see something happening here
- 11:09Speaker 3: kind of in the second half of the season where
- 11:10Speaker 3: the Mets can do something, going to run and be
- 11:13Speaker 3: the team that people thought they could be.
- 11:16Speaker 2: No, no, no, no no. He needs to sell what
- 11:18Speaker 2: he could sell and try to, you know, and and
- 11:21Speaker 2: make a commitment to the future, right Want's going to
- 11:23Speaker 2: be there for fifteen years. Lendor's there. You know, I
- 11:27Speaker 2: would I would move now that you're kind of in
- 11:29Speaker 2: this position, you know, I would make moves to kind of,
- 11:34Speaker 2: you know, get what you can get and make the
- 11:36Speaker 2: young players that are up there playing right now benj
- 11:39Speaker 2: and phenomenal players, but there are some players that they
- 11:44Speaker 2: need to kind of move on from and make a
- 11:46Speaker 2: commitment to the future, like it's it's not going to
- 11:48Speaker 2: be in the cards for them this year. Unfortunately. My
- 11:51Speaker 2: conversation though, when you know, when it ended with David
- 11:54Speaker 2: and this was you know, kind of an issue that
- 11:57Speaker 2: I had with him, was it was just very quick,
- 11:59Speaker 2: you know, it was, hey, we're going to move on.
- 12:02Speaker 2: I said, okay, great, and then that was it. There
- 12:04Speaker 2: wasn't you know for me, like the lack of the
- 12:08Speaker 2: lack of the human part of what we do emotionally
- 12:11Speaker 2: and you guys, I mean you guys know like coaches,
- 12:14Speaker 2: like the amount of hours that they put in it's
- 12:16Speaker 2: it's very thankless, and especially from the from the hitting department.
- 12:20Speaker 2: I mean I was in that cage from from two
- 12:21Speaker 2: o'clock till six thirty and sometimes even after the game.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Guys would want to hit. So you're you're full on
- 12:27Speaker 2: emotionally committed physically, the season is a monster. We're away
- 12:32Speaker 2: from family. So for you know, for somebody, especially in
- 12:36Speaker 2: my position, that I've been in this game for a
- 12:38Speaker 2: really really long time, like I've you know, even when
- 12:41Speaker 2: I was done playing, you know, I was in front offices.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I was getting to know the analytical part of the
- 12:47Speaker 2: game and diving into it and to have that conversation
- 12:50Speaker 2: just be like, you know, hey, do you thanks for
- 12:53Speaker 2: your hard work? Whatever it is, like, there was no
- 12:55Speaker 2: hard feelings, like we all know the saying in the
- 12:58Speaker 2: game as you get hired to get fired, like it
- 13:00Speaker 2: was it's inevitable. We all have, you know, are kind
- 13:03Speaker 2: of timing that it's gonna run out. But you know,
- 13:07Speaker 2: I just felt like that that staff there, you know,
- 13:10Speaker 2: with the half Nerd. Now you look at half Ner
- 13:12Speaker 2: you look at Antoine Richard Richardson over in Atlanta, and
- 13:14Speaker 2: they're they're excelling, right, you just let go really really
- 13:18Speaker 2: good proven coaches. Antoine Richardson is probably one of the
- 13:21Speaker 2: best first base coaches, one of the smartest people that
- 13:24Speaker 2: I've that I've ever been around. You know, if you
- 13:27Speaker 2: were going to keep anybody that was definitely the guy
- 13:29Speaker 2: to keep, and you know I would have easily taken it.
- 13:32Speaker 2: You know, I would have been the guy that that
- 13:34Speaker 2: had been fired fire me, But there was too many
- 13:36Speaker 2: other good people that that have that have kind of
- 13:40Speaker 2: been in this game, and some friends of mine, and
- 13:43Speaker 2: it's just, you know, the game. They just got done,
- 13:46Speaker 2: you know, not the right way, and sometimes that's the
- 13:49Speaker 2: way it goes. But as far as for the Mets
- 13:52Speaker 2: this year, yeah, I don't I don't really see them
- 13:54Speaker 2: having the pieces to make a run. There's just too
- 13:57Speaker 2: many moving pieces and you know, talk about I'm not
- 14:00Speaker 2: going to say run prevention anymore, it's pitching in defense
- 14:04Speaker 2: where you have too many guys out of position, and
- 14:08Speaker 2: you know, it's just I don't see the pieces there
- 14:10Speaker 2: to make the run.
- 14:11Speaker 3: You consider some of the things you were talking about analytical,
- 14:14Speaker 3: you know, the fact that you know, we know how
- 14:17Speaker 3: I know how hard coaches are. You know, being a
- 14:19Speaker 3: player is hard, but the hours that coaches put in
- 14:22Speaker 3: are almost double the players.
- 14:24Speaker 6: Right.
- 14:24Speaker 3: The fact that you couldn't have more of a conversation
- 14:27Speaker 3: than just thanking you, because that was my issue when
- 14:29Speaker 3: I got done too, is I just wanted to be
- 14:32Speaker 3: treated like a human being. I don't want to be
- 14:33Speaker 3: treated like a number. I just wanted someone to say
- 14:35Speaker 3: whether they were lying and just said, hey, I appreciate
- 14:38Speaker 3: you coming out, love what you did for this team,
- 14:40Speaker 3: best luck in the future.
- 14:41Speaker 6: But I couldn't even get that.
- 14:42Speaker 2: To me.
- 14:42Speaker 3: That feels very analytical. Is that kind of what you're
- 14:45Speaker 3: referring to, as well to meeting people that are leaders,
- 14:48Speaker 3: that are men, that could talk to you like a
- 14:50Speaker 3: grown man that deserves a conversation of why you're not
- 14:54Speaker 3: coming back at least thank you for what you did
- 14:56Speaker 3: for this team, tell you how you can improve or
- 14:59Speaker 3: whatever it might be.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's definitely the disconnect. And and I think
- 15:03Speaker 2: we have you know, and I've talked about this too,
- 15:06Speaker 2: it's we're we're we're we have hires, you know, coaches,
- 15:10Speaker 2: managers that have you know, not done this before. You know,
- 15:15Speaker 2: they haven't put in the time, they haven't put in
- 15:18Speaker 2: the sweat, they haven't gone through the rigors of a
- 15:21Speaker 2: of a major league season, and we're we're kind of appointing,
- 15:25Speaker 2: you know, these leadership positions to people that haven't done it.
- 15:28Speaker 2: And I don't I don't care what anybody says. Experience
- 15:31Speaker 2: is massive. It's the number one factor. You know. It's
- 15:35Speaker 2: like we we all learned from our parents. We all learn,
- 15:38Speaker 2: you know, from the players that I grew up with,
- 15:40Speaker 2: the veterans that came through. They taught me how to
- 15:42Speaker 2: play the game, and I just wanted to be able
- 15:45Speaker 2: to stay in the game and pass that along. But
- 15:47Speaker 2: that all comes with the experience. And we're you know,
- 15:50Speaker 2: we're kind of appointing people right away, Like you know,
- 15:53Speaker 2: David got a huge contract. Great, awesome, and it's like, well, well,
- 15:58Speaker 2: hold on a second, Like what has he accomplished to
- 16:02Speaker 2: deserve that contract other than we heard this guy is
- 16:05Speaker 2: really really smart? But what have you accomplished in this game?
- 16:08Speaker 6: Right?
- 16:08Speaker 2: Like I talk about theo Epstein all the time, Like,
- 16:12Speaker 2: you know, you go to the Cubs and the Boston
- 16:14Speaker 2: organizations that were starving for a World Series and for
- 16:17Speaker 2: him to kind of you know, put his imprint on
- 16:19Speaker 2: that and deliver that to those cities was spectacular. That
- 16:23Speaker 2: that's a proven product, right, And I just think now
- 16:27Speaker 2: in the game, you know, we have people that are
- 16:29Speaker 2: you know, I would never just want to be a GM, right, Like,
- 16:32Speaker 2: I don't know anything about being a GM, but put
- 16:34Speaker 2: me in the assistant GM spot for like five or
- 16:37Speaker 2: six years so I can learn to get to that point.
- 16:41Speaker 2: And I think that's what we're lacking, where you know,
- 16:43Speaker 2: there's coaches that have never been in a big league
- 16:45Speaker 2: dugout that are coaching big league players that have never
- 16:47Speaker 2: been through a season, Like what is what is an
- 16:51Speaker 2: analytical or a coach that has never been through it
- 16:55Speaker 2: gonna tell player that's, oh, for twenty five that is
- 16:58Speaker 2: ready to, you know, just quit the game and life
- 17:02Speaker 2: is just miserable, Like what is what is that guy
- 17:04Speaker 2: gonna tell him? What conversations are you going to have?
- 17:07Speaker 2: And to me that that's what we're missing as well,
- 17:10Speaker 2: like you're taking you know, the game's gotten a lot younger,
- 17:13Speaker 2: which I'm saying, like the game is really good. There's
- 17:16Speaker 2: a lot of good players. Pitching is unbelievable. We're seeing
- 17:19Speaker 2: a lot of good things, and there's some things maybe
- 17:22Speaker 2: behind the scenes that we can kind of tweak and
- 17:23Speaker 2: get a little bit better. But the veterans, we're losing
- 17:27Speaker 2: the veterans of this game right Like last year we
- 17:30Speaker 2: had young players that were in veteran roles being you know,
- 17:34Speaker 2: only playing once or twice a week, Like a twenty
- 17:36Speaker 2: two year old kid right needs to be playing like
- 17:39Speaker 2: he doesn't know how to stay ready. You need a veteran,
- 17:42Speaker 2: You need a Kevin Pillar who's been there, done that,
- 17:44Speaker 2: who's mentally tough, who's kind of been through it all
- 17:47Speaker 2: to you know, to kind of lead some of these
- 17:50Speaker 2: younger guys. And I think, I think in our in
- 17:53Speaker 2: our game, that's kind of what we're missing. We're missing
- 17:55Speaker 2: the leadership type of personalities. And you know, it's it's
- 18:01Speaker 2: being replaced by people that really don't have experience. Like
- 18:04Speaker 2: I can't even tell you who half the managers are
- 18:06Speaker 2: right now in the game. I don't know what they've
- 18:07Speaker 2: I'd have to go look them up and see what
- 18:09Speaker 2: their their background is. Like it's it's it's kind of
- 18:13Speaker 2: headed in a direction that you know, I just I
- 18:16Speaker 2: just don't agree with it. And if you look at it,
- 18:18Speaker 2: if you look at this from from a corporation, right,
- 18:23Speaker 2: a billion dollars corporations that can generate billions of dollars,
- 18:27Speaker 2: and we're making we're making hires to where people have
- 18:30Speaker 2: no experience and what they're doing, like from a common
- 18:34Speaker 2: sense standspoint, that makes no sense to me at all.
- 18:37Speaker 2: And so, yeah, there are some as good as things
- 18:39Speaker 2: are in baseball right now and how popular it is
- 18:41Speaker 2: with the fans, which is great, there are some other
- 18:43Speaker 2: issues that we need to tackle and get a little
- 18:45Speaker 2: bit better at.
- 18:46Speaker 1: So I'm want to finish with this because the part
- 18:49Speaker 1: you mentioned the other day about Wuan Soto definitely went
- 18:51Speaker 1: off too. So can you explain that? And then for fans,
- 18:54Speaker 1: I mean some fans were like, well, you know, isn't
- 18:57Speaker 1: that the coaching staff's fall for for Soto versus the
- 19:00Speaker 1: front office in terms of him kind of doing his
- 19:02Speaker 1: own thing? And how you balance that anyway with a
- 19:04Speaker 1: guy who signed for a long time who produces. So
- 19:06Speaker 1: can you run through what happened there?
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yeah? No, And I want to make sure I reiterate this.
- 19:12Speaker 2: That was not a reflection on one. More than anything,
- 19:16Speaker 2: it tells you the human the human side of one
- 19:19Speaker 2: where you know, emotionally he made a huge life decision,
- 19:24Speaker 2: you know, and it was just a really tough two
- 19:27Speaker 2: months for him in the beginning. Everybody saw it, right,
- 19:29Speaker 2: it was you weren't seeing the joyful Wan Soto. You know,
- 19:34Speaker 2: he's twenty six, he's already won World Series MVP. He's
- 19:37Speaker 2: one of the best players on the planet. I just
- 19:40Speaker 2: think it was a really, really tough transition. But I
- 19:43Speaker 2: feel like, you know, from a from a leadership standpoint,
- 19:46Speaker 2: and this is what I'm talking about, kind of the disconnect.
- 19:49Speaker 2: And I refer to yesterday in our podcast that you know,
- 19:52Speaker 2: Billy Bean had a huge conversation with me and he
- 19:55Speaker 2: called me out, you know, and he was like, why
- 19:57Speaker 2: didn't you run that out like Derek Jeter runs us
- 19:59Speaker 2: out all the time. And he pulled me up during
- 20:01Speaker 2: the game, and he had looked me right in the face. Right,
- 20:04Speaker 2: It wasn't a roundabout. It wasn't you know, through a
- 20:06Speaker 2: coach or the manager.
- 20:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 20:08Speaker 2: And there's there's some players, you know, when you commit
- 20:11Speaker 2: to somebody long term, right, I think you know, the
- 20:15Speaker 2: voice of the general manager, especially if you have that
- 20:18Speaker 2: relationship and connection goes a lot further, right. And you know,
- 20:22Speaker 2: of course you have and we just talked about this
- 20:25Speaker 2: the leaders on the team, right, the veteran guy to
- 20:29Speaker 2: kind of pull him aside and be like, hey man,
- 20:31Speaker 2: this isn't right, you know, And whether that's supposed to
- 20:34Speaker 2: come from the manager. Carlos is managing the game he
- 20:38Speaker 2: doesn't know what's going on back there, right, And you know,
- 20:41Speaker 2: I had reference that there was an assistant GM that
- 20:44Speaker 2: sat with Wan that didn't really Hey, you know, don't
- 20:47Speaker 2: you think it's a good idea, like, you know, let's
- 20:50Speaker 2: get out there support your team, like those guys are
- 20:52Speaker 2: out there supporting you. I just I felt like there
- 20:56Speaker 2: was a few things that happened that, you know, I
- 21:00Speaker 2: just didn't agree with from a leadership standpoint. And you know,
- 21:04Speaker 2: when other players kind of see other players, you know,
- 21:06Speaker 2: going through certain things, and it can kind of create
- 21:10Speaker 2: a little bit of a disconnect. There was nothing crazy,
- 21:14Speaker 2: nothing bad. It wasn't a terrible clubhouse. It wasn't a
- 21:17Speaker 2: great clubhouse, but not ever, like I said earlier, not
- 21:20Speaker 2: every clubhouse is great. And this wasn't a reflection on
- 21:23Speaker 2: want wants tremendously. He's a great human being to give
- 21:26Speaker 2: you the shirt off of his back. So I want
- 21:28Speaker 2: to be very clear. I wasn't saying anything about Wand
- 21:31Speaker 2: it was more, you know, it's just like he is
- 21:33Speaker 2: twenty six, right, there was I was. It took me
- 21:36Speaker 2: a long time to you know, kind of take responsibility
- 21:40Speaker 2: and you know, your reflection of the organization the younger
- 21:44Speaker 2: players are going to look to you. You're the guy
- 21:46Speaker 2: that signed there for fifteen years. You have a responsibility
- 21:49Speaker 2: to the city and the organization to go about through
- 21:51Speaker 2: your business the right way. And I just thought that
- 21:54Speaker 2: was a real good teaching moment, right because if you
- 21:56Speaker 2: addressed the best player on the team, nobody else on
- 21:59Speaker 2: the team has excuse to do anything else, Like you
- 22:01Speaker 2: have to show up and be professional and do what
- 22:03Speaker 2: you're supposed to do. And I felt at that moment,
- 22:08Speaker 2: you know, that should have came, especially when I addressed
- 22:11Speaker 2: it and brought it up, like that should have came
- 22:14Speaker 2: from somebody higher up. I'm not gonna say it should
- 22:17Speaker 2: have been this person or that person, but it just
- 22:21Speaker 2: didn't happen, and it kind of went unspoken about and
- 22:23Speaker 2: it was just a really bad look.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Yeah, well, thanks for bringing stuff to like because people
- 22:28Speaker 1: want insight. I mean, the game is also run by fans.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Fans want to hear what's going on, especially when you
- 22:34Speaker 1: know things are not being produced on the field the
- 22:36Speaker 1: way that the team, you know, hopes to be. So
- 22:39Speaker 1: a lot more from Eric. Listen to the EC three
- 22:41Speaker 1: pod that he is part of and he runs there
- 22:44Speaker 1: so you can listen to the whole part about the
- 22:46Speaker 1: Mets there. But Eric, thanks for joining us.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Man.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Really appreciate your timing the insight.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Yeah, appreciate it. Thanks for having me on.
- 22:55Speaker 1: A se Geek is MLB's official ticket marketplace, and in
- 22:58Speaker 1: addition to find out every single game on the MLB calendar,
- 23:03Speaker 1: there are big events coming up very soon.
- 23:05Speaker 6: There's an All Star game. There's a home run derby.
- 23:07Speaker 6: And if you think you're perfect and you can pick
- 23:09Speaker 6: the right seat at the home run derby to get
- 23:11Speaker 6: the most home run balls, you can get the little
- 23:13Speaker 6: green dot and that might be your lucky seat. Don't
- 23:16Speaker 6: go red dot, though, because you might not get any balls,
- 23:18Speaker 6: but go redgreen dot and get as many home run
- 23:21Speaker 6: balls as you think you can catch.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Yep, you click the seat, you check out what your

- 23:52Speaker 1: Thank you to ze Geek. Let us slap and we'll
- 23:56Speaker 1: do it uniquely today. Kevin Pilarz come up with some
- 23:59Speaker 1: trade dot line prediction slash ideas, So we'll go through
- 24:02Speaker 1: one or two and then we'll do a few more
- 24:05Speaker 1: once we say go by to the TV crowd. KP
- 24:07Speaker 1: your thoughts.
- 24:09Speaker 6: Oh yeah, so yeah.
- 24:11Speaker 3: I came up with these at breakfast this morning, and
- 24:14Speaker 3: I wanted to give the Chicago White Sox a little
- 24:16Speaker 3: bit of love on what they're doing. And obviously they've
- 24:20Speaker 3: been able to build within so I don't think they
- 24:22Speaker 3: want to necessarily spend a lot of their prospect capital
- 24:26Speaker 3: to bring in a guy. But Michael Walka has been,
- 24:29Speaker 3: you know, kind of a revelation in this second half
- 24:31Speaker 3: of his career and has been super consistent, and I
- 24:34Speaker 3: feel like him coming into that rotation would just kind
- 24:37Speaker 3: of help bring an adult in that room and bring
- 24:40Speaker 3: a level of consistency to allow the White Sox to
- 24:43Speaker 3: kind of just ride out this kind of amazing season
- 24:46Speaker 3: that they're on. And then you know, you look at
- 24:48Speaker 3: the rest of the list. You talked about how bad
- 24:51Speaker 3: the Atlanta Braves have been hurt with injuries with the
- 24:54Speaker 3: starting pitching, and they've had guys step up, but it's
- 24:57Speaker 3: starting to kind of fade a little bit, could you
- 25:00Speaker 3: Genterrek Scooble paired up with Chris Sale at the top
- 25:02Speaker 3: of your rotation, talk about an all time one two
- 25:07Speaker 3: a punch heading into a postseason series. And obviously, to me,
- 25:10Speaker 3: the Phillies are the team that and the Dodgers, but
- 25:13Speaker 3: the Phillies are the team. You have two left handed
- 25:15Speaker 3: starting pitchers. It matches up really nice with the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 25:20Speaker 3: We can't talk enough about the Cubs and the injuries
- 25:23Speaker 3: that they've had to their starting rotation, and they're continually
- 25:26Speaker 3: having injuries to their starting rotation. I know they went
- 25:28Speaker 3: out and got David Peterson to kind of fill in,
- 25:31Speaker 3: and he's obviously had his ups and downs in his career,
- 25:34Speaker 3: but you know, kind of a steady guy. Joe Ryan
- 25:37Speaker 3: would look really good in a Cub's uniform.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Okay, so recapping here so far, KP has Michael Wakatt
- 25:42Speaker 1: to the White Sox. Love it if the Royals are
- 25:45Speaker 1: willing to deal someone like that makes a ton of sense.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Not going to cost as much in terms of long
- 25:50Speaker 1: term assets, right, Still something that you need to give
- 25:53Speaker 1: up some juice for, but not the amount that it
- 25:55Speaker 1: would take to get someone like Scooble who you have
- 25:58Speaker 1: going to the Braves makes a ton of sense. Joe Ryan,
- 26:01Speaker 1: you have going to the Cubs would be a huge addition.
- 26:04Speaker 1: And I think, I mean when you're looking at these guys,
- 26:06Speaker 1: these are playoff starters, right KP Like walk is going
- 26:08Speaker 1: to start a playoff game for the White Sox if
- 26:10Speaker 1: he ends up there, school of course would start a
- 26:12Speaker 1: playoff game for anyone Joe Ryan, same thing for a
- 26:14Speaker 1: Cub starting rotation that would be decimated. Now you have
- 26:17Speaker 1: two position player ideas the bottom that I thought both
- 26:19Speaker 1: were fascinating. One like makes more sense than the other
- 26:22Speaker 1: based on what you hear publicly. But that doesn't mean
- 26:25Speaker 1: that Byron Buxton won't get traded. So walk me through
- 26:28Speaker 1: that second, that fourth one on your list in the
- 26:30Speaker 1: first one in terms of position players, do you think
- 26:33Speaker 1: that Byron Buckston actually will be dealt?
- 26:35Speaker 2: Like?
- 26:35Speaker 1: Do you think that what we're getting is a facade?
- 26:37Speaker 1: Right now? From the team saying they're not looking to
- 26:40Speaker 1: move him, and Buxton saying I'm not asking for anything.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I think location matters. Where did I have him
- 26:46Speaker 3: going again, I can't remember?
- 26:48Speaker 6: Tampa? Yeah, Tampa, that's right.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I tried to factor in location to it. And yeah,
- 26:56Speaker 3: I mean I get it. Byron Bucksen holds all the
- 26:59Speaker 3: leverage in that situation. And I do love the idea
- 27:02Speaker 3: that there was still a player out there that kind
- 27:04Speaker 3: of wants to follow the Jeter model of like I
- 27:06Speaker 3: signed up to be with this team for the duration
- 27:10Speaker 3: of my career or the duration of my contract. And
- 27:13Speaker 3: the fact that he's saying publicly obviously makes it a
- 27:17Speaker 3: little bit more difficult to do. But I did factor
- 27:20Speaker 3: in location, you know, him being you know, a guy
- 27:23Speaker 3: from the South. You know, the Tampa Bay Rays could
- 27:26Speaker 3: obviously use a guy. I think the way he's playing
- 27:29Speaker 3: and how much money he's owed, I think fits kind
- 27:31Speaker 3: of the raise threshold of how much they're willing to
- 27:34Speaker 3: pay a player. And then you know the last one
- 27:38Speaker 3: with Jared Durant, I mean, I think you know, with
- 27:41Speaker 3: where the where Boston is at in terms of the
- 27:43Speaker 3: record and underperforming and the fact that to start the year,
- 27:47Speaker 3: it was like Jared Durant wasn't going to play the outfield,
- 27:49Speaker 3: he was going to DH It felt like they had
- 27:51Speaker 3: all these kind of moving parts. Eventually, Roman Anthony is
- 27:54Speaker 3: gonna come back, but he hasn't had the best year.
- 27:58Speaker 3: But I still think he has some trade value you
- 28:00Speaker 3: in him and the Padres, you know, could use another
- 28:04Speaker 3: kind of just exciting player in their outfield. I know
- 28:07Speaker 3: Ramon Lariano is going to miss some time. I know
- 28:09Speaker 3: right handed, left handed, but I think Jared Durant would
- 28:12Speaker 3: be a nice fit in San Diego.
- 28:14Speaker 1: His name has floated around KRATS for years now and
- 28:18Speaker 1: it hasn't actually happened.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Yeah, because it hasn't happened because they know he's an
- 28:23Speaker 4: electric player and they know that. Yes, they have a
- 28:27Speaker 4: lot of pieces, but they're needing them all because they
- 28:31Speaker 4: didn't go out and get anybody. I mean, you're hoping
- 28:33Speaker 4: Yoshida comes back and does something for your team and
- 28:37Speaker 4: then you know, oh wait, no, we're going to probably
- 28:39Speaker 4: get rid of him. Now he's getting at bass for
- 28:41Speaker 4: this team, and then Duran. Now Roman Anthony's not in there.
- 28:44Speaker 4: I think they built this team with some definite position
- 28:47Speaker 4: player flaws, and I think the Red Sox are at
- 28:51Speaker 4: an inflection point this season. Do they put him back
- 28:55Speaker 4: up on the block. That was my favorite one of everything,
- 28:57Speaker 4: other than the fact that you essentially trolled the Twins
- 29:01Speaker 4: for trading Byron bucks And when he said, what he
- 29:05Speaker 4: said was nobody's talked to him. He hasn't gone to anybody.
- 29:10Speaker 4: That just means nobody's approached him with a nice little deal.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Right, It could be selective. Also, hey, factor this it's real.
- 29:21Speaker 1: I don't know what the exact number is, but I
- 29:23Speaker 1: know it's not nothing. You know, Minnesota taxes versus Florida
- 29:26Speaker 1: taxes the rest of the way there like that. That
- 29:28Speaker 1: part does make sense. He's from Georgia. I'm with you here, Kratz.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Byron Buckson is not going the route of say Mike Trout,
- 29:36Speaker 1: who for a while really wouldn't go anywhere. I think
- 29:38Speaker 1: maybe now he'd be open to a conversation. I think
- 29:40Speaker 1: buck would be open to a conversation. He's just he's
- 29:43Speaker 1: obviously not going to initiate it. He's not that guy.
- 29:45Speaker 2: I know.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Rarely in MLB do players request trades anyway, But if
- 29:49Speaker 1: the Twins say, hey, this is it we're eight games back.
- 29:52Speaker 1: It's the trade deadline. Your value is sky high. We've
- 29:55Speaker 1: got this awesome offer from the Rays or the Braves.
- 29:59Speaker 1: I think he's going. I think he's waiving it, and
- 30:01Speaker 1: he's going, you know, if the numbers match up for
- 30:03Speaker 1: him tax wise. I'm sure. I don't know what Georgia
- 30:06Speaker 1: is matched up with Minnesota, but that all gets done
- 30:08Speaker 1: behind the scenes anyway. They figure that part out, because
- 30:11Speaker 1: that's part of the no trade cause too. You're generally
- 30:13Speaker 1: not going to go to a team where it's costing
- 30:15Speaker 1: you if you can control that. But I think he's
- 30:18Speaker 1: going to play for a tender if he wants.
- 30:21Speaker 4: How many players from the Twins or previous players that
- 30:24Speaker 4: were Twins have we had on since last trade deadline
- 30:28Speaker 4: that said we had no idea, We had no idea
- 30:32Speaker 4: this was going they were going to do it like this.
- 30:34Speaker 4: So just because we don't hear anything today June twenty ninth,
- 30:40Speaker 4: doesn't mean that the Twins ownership isn't going to be like,
- 30:43Speaker 4: we do need to cut a little bit more, and
- 30:46Speaker 4: I think we could rebuild because Byron Bucks is only
- 30:48Speaker 4: making fifteen a year for the next two years.
- 30:52Speaker 1: The reason why I don't think it'll happen. Is I
- 30:54Speaker 1: think they'll trade Joe Ryan, They'll trade Ryan Jeffers. That'll
- 30:56Speaker 1: clear some money. And I think that what they're trying
- 30:59Speaker 1: to do is you get a different pull. Lad brother
- 31:01Speaker 1: take over the reins for the last six months, and
- 31:03Speaker 1: he's trying to say that they're more competitive. So if
- 31:05Speaker 1: you trade Bucks and you kind of go against everything
- 31:07Speaker 1: you said, Morale is already super low fan Morale out
- 31:10Speaker 1: in Minneapolis. So I think Buckson's the guy that they keep, right,
- 31:13Speaker 1: It's kind of like Arty Moreno keeping trapped for years. Right,
