- 0:11Hello friends. It's Sean.
- 0:13Here it is Monday, it's the 2nd of June.
- 0:18It's winter in my part of the world.
- 0:19Wherever you are, I hope you're going well because we are in for
- 0:23a treat. We are opening up a new book of
- 0:27the Bible today in Deuteronomy. And you may have tackled this
- 0:31book previously and found a little bit perplexing, but I'd
- 0:34like to offer us a lens through which we can approach this book.
- 0:38In this book, we hear Moses speaking to Israel just before
- 0:43they enter the Promised Land. They've been in the wilderness
- 0:46for a long time. The old disobedient generation
- 0:49has passed away, and now this is a new generation.
- 0:53And so Moses takes a moment before they descend into this
- 0:55land to flesh out the 10 commandments and that covenant
- 1:01that God made with his people on Mount Sinai so that they know
- 1:04what it looks like to live as God's people.
- 1:08Now, like all writings during that period of history, of
- 1:11course, it's going to begin by extolling the virtues of the
- 1:15author so that everyone knows we're in good hands.
- 1:17And then it's going to move on to talking about worship as the
- 1:21central part of this new society and understanding the importance
- 1:26of the name of God. And then pulling apart the 10
- 1:29commandments and what following them is going to look like so
- 1:33that this new nation can be formed around the heart of
- 1:37loving and obeying the God that has gone into a covenant with
- 1:41him. And to our modern ears, hearing
- 1:44lists of laws can sound a little bit archaic and irrelevant
- 1:49because we're all about grace and freedom.
- 1:52But for these people, at that time, no other religion, no
- 1:56other God, had ever laid out clearly what God expected of his
- 2:00people. So implicit in Deuteronomy is
- 2:04this incredible generosity and grace of a God who reveals
- 2:09himself to his people so that his people know exactly how to
- 2:12live in harmony with him. So let's begin this journey
- 2:16together, friends, as we unwrap what it is that God wants His
- 2:20people to know about living in relationship with Him.
- 2:26As we read together Deuteronomy chapter 1, these are the words
- 2:40that Moses spoke to all the people of Israel while they were
- 2:44in the wilderness east of the Jordan River.
- 2:48They were camped in the Jordan Valley near Saf, between Pahran
- 2:51on one side and Tafel, Laban, Hezeroth and Daisahab on the
- 2:57other. Normally it takes only 11 days
- 3:00to travel from Mount Sinai to Kaddish Bhania, going by way of
- 3:04Mount Seiya. But 40 years after the
- 3:07Israelites left Egypt, on the first day of the 11th month,
- 3:12Moses addressed the people of Israel, telling them everything
- 3:15the Lord had commanded him to say.
- 3:18This took place after he had defeated King Sion of the
- 3:21Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, and at Edrey had defeated King
- 3:26Ogh of Bashan, who ruled in Ashtaroth while the Israelites
- 3:31were in the land of Moab, east of the Jordan River.
- 3:34Moses carefully explained the Lord's instructions as follows.
- 3:40When we were at Mount Sinai, the Lord our God said to us, You
- 3:44have stayed at this mountain long enough.
- 3:47It is time to break camp and move on.
- 3:51Go to the Hill Country of the Amorites and to all the
- 3:54neighbouring regions, the Jordan Valley, the Hill Country, the
- 3:57western foothills, the Negev and the coastal plain.
- 4:01Go to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon and all the way
- 4:06to the great Euphrates River. Look, I am giving all this land
- 4:11to you. Go in and occupy it, for this is
- 4:15the land the Lord swore to give to your ancestors Abraham,
- 4:19Isaac, and Jacob, and to all their descendants, Moses
- 4:25continued. At that time I told you, you are
- 4:28too great a burden for me to carry all by myself.
- 4:32The Lord your God has increased your population, making you as
- 4:36numerous as the stars. And may the Lord, the God of
- 4:40your ancestors multiply you 1000 times more and bless you as he
- 4:45promised. But you are such a heavy load to
- 4:49carry. How can I deal with all your
- 4:51problems and bickering? Choose some well respected men
- 4:54from each tribe who are known for their wisdom and
- 4:57understanding and I will appoint them as your leaders.
- 5:02Then you responded. Your plan is a good one, so I
- 5:05took the wise and respected men you had selected from your
- 5:08tribes and appointed them to serve as judges and officials
- 5:12over you. Some were responsible for 1000
- 5:15people, some for 100, some for 50, and some for 10.
- 5:21At that time I instructed the judges you must hear the cases
- 5:25of your fellow Israelites and the foreigners living among you.
- 5:28Be perfectly fair in your decisions and impartial in your
- 5:32judgements. Here, the cases of those who are
- 5:35poor as well as those who are rich.
- 5:38Don't be afraid of anyone's anger, for the decision you make
- 5:41is God's decision. Bring me any cases that are too
- 5:45difficult for you and I will handle them.
- 5:48At that time I gave you instructions about everything
- 5:51you were to do. Then, just as the Lord our God
- 5:55commanded us, we left Mount Sinai and travelled through the
- 5:59great and terrifying wilderness, as you yourselves remember, and
- 6:03headed toward the Hill Country of the Amorites.
- 6:06When we arrived at Kadeshbarnia, I said to you, You have now
- 6:11reached the Hill Country of the Amorites that the Lord our God
- 6:15is giving us. Look, He has placed the land in
- 6:18front of you. Go and occupy it as the Lord the
- 6:22God of your ancestors has promised you.
- 6:25Don't be afraid, don't be discouraged.
- 6:28But you all came to me and said, first let's send out scouts to
- 6:33explore the land for us. They will advise us on the best
- 6:36route to take and which towns we should enter.
- 6:39This seemed like a good idea to me, so I chose 12 scouts, one
- 6:43from each of your tribes. They headed for the Hill Country
- 6:47and came to the valley of Eskol and explored it.
- 6:51They picked some of its fruit and brought it back to us and
- 6:54they reported the land the Lord our God has given us is indeed a
- 6:59good land. But you rebelled against the
- 7:02command of the Lord your God and refused to go in.
- 7:05You complained in your tents and said the Lord must hate us.
- 7:10That's why he's brought us here from Egypt to hand us over to
- 7:13the Amorites to be slaughtered. Where can we go?
- 7:17Our brothers have demoralised us with their report.
- 7:20They tell us the people of the land are taller and more
- 7:23powerful than we are, and their towns are large with walls
- 7:27rising high into the sky. We even saw giants there, the
- 7:31descendants of Anuk. But I said to you, don't be
- 7:36shocked or afraid of them. The Lord your God is going ahead
- 7:40of you. He will fight for you, just as
- 7:43you saw him do in Egypt. And you saw how the Lord your
- 7:47God cared for you all along the way, as he travelled through the
- 7:50wilderness, just as a father cares for his child.
- 7:54Now he has brought you to this place.
- 7:57But even after all he did, you refused to trust the Lord your
- 8:01God, who goes before you looking for the best places to camp,
- 8:06guiding you with a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of
- 8:10cloud by day. When the Lord heard you
- 8:13complaining, he became very angry, so he solemnly swore.
- 8:19Not one of you from this wicked generation will live to see the
- 8:23good land I swore to give your ancestors, except Caleb, son of
- 8:28Geffenae. He will see this land because he
- 8:31has followed the Lord completely.
- 8:33I will give to him and his descendants some of the very
- 8:37land he explored during his scouting mission.
- 8:41And the Lord was also angry with me because of you.
- 8:44He said to me, Moses, not even you will enter the Promised
- 8:48Land. Instead, your assistant, Joshua,
- 8:51son of Nun, will lead the people into the land.
- 8:55Encourage him, for he will lead Israel as they take possession
- 8:59of it. I will give the land to your
- 9:02little ones, your innocent children.
- 9:05You were afraid they would be captured, but they will be the
- 9:08ones who occupy it. As for you, turn around now and
- 9:12go back through the wilderness toward the Red Sea, then you
- 9:17confessed we have sinned against the Lord.
- 9:20We will go into the land and fight for it, as the Lord our
- 9:23God has commanded us. So your men strapped on their
- 9:26weapons, thinking it would be easy to attack the Hill Country.
- 9:29But the Lord told me to tell you, do not attack, for I am not
- 9:34with you. If you go ahead on your own, you
- 9:37will be crushed by your enemies. This is what I told you.
- 9:42But you would not listen. Instead, you rebelled against
- 9:45the Lord's command and arrogantly went into the Hill
- 9:48Country to fight. But the Amorites who lived there
- 9:50came out against you like a swarm of bees.
- 9:53They chased and battered you all the way from Sayer to Horma.
- 9:58Then you returned and wept before the Lord, but he refused
- 10:02to listen. So you stayed there at Kadesh
- 10:05for a long time? Our Lord, you are a great,
- 10:19magnificent, wise and all knowing God, and You care for us
- 10:25in ways that we cannot possibly understand, and you lead us to
- 10:30places, places that you have prepared for us and ask us to
- 10:35step out in faith. Our Father, I pray that you
- 10:40would continue your work in US, giving us obedient hearts so
- 10:45that as your busy work is done, that we would step confidently
- 10:51following your lead into these places so that we can work for
- 10:57your Kingdom's good, that we can shine Your love, and that we can
- 11:02enjoy the beautiful things that you prepare for us both now and
- 11:08in eternity. And thank you that you have
- 11:12given us Jesus, that you have told us exactly what we need to
- 11:16do to come to you, and that is to believe in you, your love for
- 11:22us and your Lordship over all. Ah, we believe, we love you and
- 11:27we are so grateful. Our mighty God, our kind
- 11:31Saviour, our constant companion. And we pray all of this in the
- 11:36name of Jesus, Amen.
