- 1:11Would help. The show tremendously.
- 1:14Thank you so much. McDonald's in Netherlands
- 1:18released a Christmas ad made entirely.
- 1:20With generative AI. And the Internet completely
- 1:24ripped it apart so fast that the company pulled it within days.
- 1:28Now this 45 second spot was titled the most terrible time of
- 1:31the year and featured AI generated people suffering
- 1:35through holiday disasters. Now that made me want to see
- 1:39where this was going. Comments were disabled on the
- 1:42YouTube channel before the video was eventually delisted.
- 1:46Now the production company issued A defensive statement,
- 1:48then deleted that one too. So what went wrong that
- 1:51McDonald's had to scrub the ad, the defense and any trace of
- 1:54confidence from this entire campaign?
- 1:58The ad was created by Dutch agency called TBWA Nibocco and
- 2:03AUS production company called The Sweet Shop and 1 executive
- 2:07claimed 10 people spent seven weeks sleepless weeks making it.
- 2:12Now we're going to go through what the ad actually showed, why
- 2:16the backlash was so intense and what McDonald's said when they
- 2:18pulled the plug and we'll get right into that right after this
- 2:21short break. Now McDonald's Neverland,
- 2:25Netherlands tried to make a Christmas ad using.
- 2:27Gen. AI.
- 2:28The concept was dark humor about holiday stress.
- 2:31Family's presents fly off a car roof when they hit a low bridge.
- 2:35Carol singers lose their sheet music to the wind.
- 2:38Santa gets stuck in traffic. A man slips on ice and breaks
- 2:41some bones. A woman's coat gets caught in a
- 2:43tram door and she gets dragged away.
- 2:47Now picture AI generated faces cycling through scenes so fast
- 2:51you can barely register what's happening before the next
- 2:54disaster arrives. Now generative AI video has a
- 2:58problem with continuity. The technology loses coherence
- 3:02after a few seconds, so creators cut rapidly between short clips
- 3:06to hide the glitches. The pacing has become a.
- 3:09Tell of. AI generated video, the
- 3:13McDonald's ad leaned into it and the result looked like what 1
- 3:16critic called a visual seizure. The faces were off, the physics
- 3:20didn't make sense. The AI generated characters
- 3:22moved through scenes with the uncanny valley problem where
- 3:26everyone looks almost human but also looks creepy and almost not
- 3:31quite right, and the backlash hit immediately.
- 3:35One user on X said the commercial single handedly
- 3:38ruined by Christmas spirit. Film critic Richard Roper wrote
- 3:43that if McDonald's was going for creepy, depressing, deeply
- 3:46unfunny, clumsily shot, poorly edited and inauthentic, they
- 3:51completely nailed it. And conservative commentator
- 3:54Matt Walsh called it awful and said there was no artistry, no
- 3:57wit, no charm, no warmth, no humanity.
- 4:00Another user said McDonald's should be ashamed for releasing
- 4:03that slop. The word slop kept coming up.
- 4:07It's become shorthand for AI generated content that feels
- 4:10cheap and completely soulless. McDonald's disabled the comments
- 4:14on YouTube. Then they made the video
- 4:16completely private. Somebody could see it.
- 4:18Then they issued a statement explaining the decision.
- 4:21They said the ad was intended to reflect the stressful moments
- 4:23that can occur during the holidays in the.
- 4:25Netherlands, but. Acknowledged that for many of
- 4:28our guests, the season is the most wonderful time of the year.
- 4:31They called the incident an important learning as we explore
- 4:34the effective use of AI. So corporate right now.
- 4:39I've been digging through our analytics here and about 37% of
- 4:43you are following the channel and I'm forever grateful for
- 4:46you. And the other 63 haven't hit the
- 4:47follow button or the subscribe button.
- 4:50And I've been doing this for about 6 years.
- 4:52Independent journalist, tech, Elon Musk, etcetera.
- 4:56And I'll continue to do it for the next 10.
- 4:58And all I ask from you in return is about a second of your time
- 5:01to hit subscribe. Or follow.
- 5:03Thank you for that. OK, now keep going with me here.
- 5:06The production company tried to defend the work before deleting
- 5:09that defense. Melanie Bridge, CEO of The Sweet
- 5:11Shop, which I talked about earlier, posted a statement
- 5:14saying the ad took seven weeks, with up to 10 AI specialists
- 5:18working full time. They said that they generated
- 5:22thousands of takes and shaped them in the edit, just as we
- 5:25would on any high craft production.
- 5:28Seeing, she insisted this was not an AI trick, it was a film.
- 5:32She wrote that when craft and technology meet with intention,
- 5:36they can create work that feels genuinely cinematic.
- 5:39And that statement is now unavailable.
- 5:43But here's another wrinkle. The director is credited on the
- 5:45project. A duo called Mama Mama told
- 5:48Petapixel they were misquoted. They said the quotes belong to
- 5:52Melanie Bridge and her team. The project was finished without
- 5:56our creative input. They said it was unfortunate
- 5:59their names were being attached to it.
- 6:01So even the people credited with directing the ad are distancing
- 6:05themselves from it now. McDonald's corporate was careful
- 6:09about how they frame the mess. In this statement, they
- 6:12specifically said the commercial was produced for McDonald's
- 6:14Netherlands and asked reporters to reference the brand as
- 6:17McDonald's Netherlands in their coverage.
- 6:20Now that's damage control, and the parent company wants
- 6:22distance from the Netherlands division.
- 6:24Whether that means the US headquarters approved the
- 6:26experiment or not is unclear, but the instance on naming the
- 6:31Netherlands branch suggests someone wants a firewall between
- 6:34global McDonald's and this backlash.
- 6:38Now the broader question is whether consumers will
- 6:40eventually accept AI generated ads or whether the backlash will
- 6:44hold up now. Some people think that companies
- 6:47are trickling out AI content to normalize it over time.
- 6:51Others think the uncanny valley problem will keep audiences
- 6:54rejecting this kind of work until the technology improves
- 6:56dramatically. McDonald's learned something
- 6:59from this experiment, even if the lesson is just that people
- 7:03hate watching glitchy AI faces try to sell them burgers during
- 7:07the holidays. And whether that changes
- 7:09anything at the corporate level is a different question.
- 7:12The ad's completely gone. Nobody can see it.
- 7:14The defense is gone, nobody can read it.
- 7:17The only thing left is the phrase important, learning and a
- 7:20lot of. Screenshots.
