Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Craig Way with they alongside the producer Cameron Parker. So
- 0:02glad to have you with us. There's so much excitement
- 0:05about this Texas how You Gain And it's kind of
- 0:08weird too because I've found and i'll talk more about
- 0:11this later in the program, an almost equal amount a
- 0:16balance of excitement about the game the following week against
- 0:19the Georgia Bulldogs. And it's going to be just a
- 0:22zoo and a circus around here with a Formula one race.
- 0:25Have one going on down here next week, but that's
- 0:27next week. This week stands alone, as it always does,
- 0:31the Red River Rivalry, the one hundred and twentieth playing
- 0:37of the Red River Rivalry. And it'll be this Saturday afternoon,
- 0:40two thirty the Cotton Bowl on the fairgrounds of the
- 0:44State Fair Texas in Dallas, and our coverage will actually
- 0:47begin from the fairgrounds eleven thirty in the morning and
- 0:49the kickoff at two thirty. I'll have a lot of fun,
- 0:52as I always do, calling that football game. But I'll
- 0:54tell you what I've loved calling the football games for
- 0:59the University of Tech here, you know, twenty four years
- 1:02of play by play in thirty four years in the
- 1:04booth overall and doing that, and I have also his
- 1:09folks know, have gotten a great deal of pleasure out
- 1:11of calling Texas high school football games, including the state
- 1:14championships at all levels from six man all the way
- 1:20up to six A. And it was a distinct pleasure
- 1:22to get a chance to call all three of the
- 1:24three consecutive Westlake State title games just a few years back.
- 1:29And then, of course, the head coach of that team
- 1:32was Todd Dodge and stepped away from the game for
- 1:34retirement and came back this year where he is coaching
- 1:38the love Joy Leopards up in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex.
- 1:41But we wanted to have Todd Dodge on for another reason.
- 1:44You see, As I mentioned, this is the one hundred
- 1:46and twentieth edition of the Red River Rivalry. The eightieth edition,
- 1:52some forty years ago in nineteen eighty four, was the
- 1:55last time the Texas log Hoorns entered the Red River
- 1:59Rivalry as the number one ranked team in the nation
- 2:01like they are this year. The quarterback of that team
- 2:05was Todd Dodge, who joins us on the hotline right now.
- 2:08All right, So I got to ask it first. It
- 2:09doesn't seem like it's been forty years since you were
- 2:12taking the snaps at quarterback for Texas.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Yes, it does, Craig, it seems ever been. It seems
- 2:20ever been of forty years.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Well, I appreciate you take you the time to join us,
- 2:25because I know it was a long time ago and
- 2:26a lot of water's gone under the bridge and a
- 2:28lot of things have happened since then. But I did
- 2:32want to have you on for a couple of reasons.
- 2:34First of all, I wanted to ask you about your
- 2:37football team. Right now, I want to ask you about
- 2:40the love Joy Leopards, because I've been asked a lot
- 2:42by folks saying, hey, coach Dodge retired, he went out
- 2:46on top. Why did he decide to come back? And
- 2:48I'm sure you probably got the answer to that, and
- 2:51I tried to explain it from what I heard from
- 2:53you in different interviews and soundbites and when we've talked,
- 2:56But I know you have the best explanation for all
- 2:59of why you were to learn why you returned where
- 3:01you returned to the game.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Well, yeah, and when I retired from west Lake, those
- 3:10those two years off, there was absolutely no grandiose idea
- 3:14of just being out two years, but I did go
- 3:17watch a lot of football with Riley's team playing and
- 3:24playing gosh, you know, fourteen to fifteen games a season.
- 3:28I went to watch them play every two weeks. Got
- 3:31a chance to go see many of my former players
- 3:34at West Lake play in college. Had had a real
- 3:38fun two years in that go and play golf and
- 3:40then watching college football. But about mid about this time.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Last year, you know, I really felt like.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I still had some juice left to think and it's
- 3:51the right job came open at that that I would
- 3:54look into it.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And Elizabeth and I knew.
- 3:56Speaker 2: That we would be moving back up here to the
- 3:59Dallas Forth area, so that was a given whether I
- 4:01coached again or not, to be closer to family, closer
- 4:04to grandkids. We live in mckennie now, which is only
- 4:09eight miles from the field house here at Lovejoy. So
- 4:14everything worked out really well and it was a perfect fit.
- 4:17And I'm just absolutely loving these kids and loving this.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Job I've got.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I've got a boss, uh named Katie Cordell, our superintendent,
- 4:27who is as good a leader as I've ever been around.
- 4:29Speaker 4: So it's everything's.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Going really good, and most importantly it Liz was happy.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Yeah, well, yeah, that's important.
- 4:38Speaker 4: How well, let me ask you this then, Todd. How
- 4:41was it.
- 4:41Speaker 1: An absolute must that the job had to be in
- 4:46the Metroplex because of the proximity to Riley and the grandkids.
- 4:49And was it an absolute must that it needed to
- 4:52be a one high school town or a one high
- 4:53school situation?
- 4:56Speaker 2: Pretty much? Yep. You know. I had some you know,
- 4:59get friends at here.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And I'm just, you know, don't know how you know,
- 5:04if you.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Hear something, if you hear something that's that's coming open,
- 5:07you know, give me, give me a holler.
- 5:09Speaker 4: I wanted it to.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Be within a fifty mile radius of the Dallas Fort
- 5:12Worth area. I wanted it to be a four A
- 5:15or five A job, and I would like for it
- 5:18to be a one high school town. And so about
- 5:21mid January, when I was traveling down to South Texas
- 5:25to go deer hunting for the first time in my life,
- 5:30the job at Lovejoy came open in that kind of
- 5:33in about mid January, And next thing, you know, myself
- 5:37and and Miss Cordell are talking, and next thing you know,
- 5:42I'm in love Joy interviewing for the job.
- 5:44Speaker 3: And it went pretty quickly. After that.
- 5:47Speaker 1: There was a famous story Todd about John Wooden, the
- 5:50legendary basketball coach at UCLA, that when he was at
- 5:55Indiana State, he was about to take the job Minnesota,
- 6:01and the Minnesota, the athletic greator, said let me get
- 6:05mo with my president. I'll call you back, but it's
- 6:07almost certain that it's going to happen. He said, okay,
- 6:10And he didn't get a call back that night because
- 6:14there was a blizzard up there and the phone lines
- 6:17were down, and UCLA had called and offered, and he
- 6:20took the job, and the Minnesota called back and he said,
- 6:22I'm sorry, I've already taken it. The reason why I
- 6:24bring this up is I heard a tale that there
- 6:28was someone who was interested in you for another position
- 6:33and it kind of matched some of the things. And
- 6:37I don't know how much of this is apocryphal and
- 6:39how much of it is reel, but that there were
- 6:42certain elements of that job that would kind of fit
- 6:44what you were looking for, but they either didn't get
- 6:48back to you in time or whatever, and then the
- 6:50lovejoy thing came up and boomed.
- 6:52Speaker 4: It just fight. Is there any true to any of that?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah? There is, there is, and really it it the
- 7:02the timing of everything with all of that came about that,
- 7:09you know, to be very simple, is that the love
- 7:12Joy situation just really fit what Elizabeth and I were
- 7:16looking for.
- 7:18Speaker 3: With family and getting back closer family.
- 7:20Speaker 2: And it's it's it's interesting the this time last year,
- 7:25you know, we were in retirement. We were come to see
- 7:27Riley's team play. We were traveling out to Clemson, we
- 7:29were going out to we went to Notre Dame. Last year.
- 7:33We went to Pullman, Washington to watch Nikkia Watson play
- 7:37at watch Stage. Just going everywhere and having a great time.
- 7:42The head coach at Melissa Matt Aally. What a wonderful
- 7:45guy is and great coach. But I get a call
- 7:49from Mattnally about late July of summer twenty twenty three
- 7:55and he invites me to come visit with his team.
- 8:00You're in their training camp in early August, and so
- 8:03I said, you know I can do that. I'm going
- 8:04to be up in the Dallas area. You know, I'm
- 8:07up there quite.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Often to see grand kids and everything. So it Liz
- 8:10and I went up and the team that I played
- 8:13last last.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Friday night, we we we played a forty one to
- 8:18thirty eight game. That we kicked a thirty three yards
- 8:20field go with three secondslipt that it was an amazing game.
- 8:23But I talked to that team literally a year ago
- 8:27in their field health.
- 8:28Speaker 4: That's that.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I think the grand irony that you talked to that
- 8:31team and then at their state rank top ten and
- 8:34you beat them on a walk off field goal last week,
- 8:37and now it's now it's three in a row for
- 8:39you after the two game obviously, I got a chance
- 8:42to see and call the first game against a really
- 8:44good Love at Cooper team and that went down to
- 8:46the wire as well. How about what it's taken for
- 8:49your team through those first couple of weeks, the adjustment
- 8:52to everything, all of a sudden, the switch didn't start
- 8:55to really come on for them to turn it now
- 8:57into the stree game winning streak.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Well, it's starting to be.
- 9:03Speaker 3: That.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Our defense against Town Park played well enough to win,
- 9:09no doubt. Our offense against Love at Cooper the first
- 9:13game played well enough to win. Neither one of the
- 9:17other side of the ball played very well in those games.
- 9:21So after two weeks, the biggest thing we had to
- 9:24do was put it together and then improved big time
- 9:30in the kicking game. So we are starting to get there.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Now.
- 9:34Speaker 2: We're playing really good, complimentary football. Last Friday night, a
- 9:38really good Melissa team. Well they get they are beautiful
- 9:43getting off the bus. I mean, they're just a really
- 9:44good looking football team. Our defense caused.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Four fumbles, I mean four takeaways, got three interceptions in
- 9:52a fumble. The defense presented the football to us three
- 9:57other times inside the fifty yard line. Our kicking game
- 10:01was nearly flawless. Is one of those those.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Saturday mornings Craig in the in the barbershops across the
- 10:10state of Texas that the Lovejoy Special.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Teams was not talked about, and that was that was good.
- 10:17Speaker 2: That means that means, that.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Means that they executed and.
- 10:20Speaker 2: They did well.
- 10:21Speaker 4: There was nothing really to remember except for the walk.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Off the walk off field go. And so that's that's good.
- 10:27That's goods things.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Yeah, we put it all together.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Yeah, we put it all together. And uh so we
- 10:34are in a league that's got five teams. Not throwing
- 10:37shade at anybody else, but we've got five teams in
- 10:39our league which is Walnut, Grove, Emerson, Melissa, Anna and
- 10:45Us that all five are pretty stinking good teams and
- 10:50getting better every week, and whoever wins this league is
- 10:56going to be really battle tested.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Uh So, we've.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Had four games between those five teams so far, and
- 11:05all four of them have been decided by four points
- 11:07or less.
- 11:09Speaker 1: And wasn't the you know, if you're wasn't the Anna
- 11:12game like sixty six to sixty two or something like that.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 11:16Speaker 2: Yeah, our game against Anna was sixty six sixty two.
- 11:18There was about thirteen hundred yards of total offense innet game.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Wow, it's amazing Todd Dodge pinning us here on the program.
- 11:26I know obviously you're keeping close tabs on Riley and
- 11:29what things are going on at Carol. Do you get
- 11:32a chance to visit with Tony Salazar and get his
- 11:36thoughts on how things are going for him at Westlake?
- 11:39Speaker 4: Absolutely?
- 11:39Speaker 2: Talk with Tony, you know, probably every couple of weeks,
- 11:42sometimes every week, you know, they you know, I mean,
- 11:48Westlake plays tough people in the non district, always has,
- 11:52always will, whether you want to or not. Just kind
- 11:55of like here at Lovejoy. You're not going to get
- 11:57a play people who were five and five a year before.
- 12:00You're gonna play tough people, you know. I talked to
- 12:04Tony after the attack to see the loss, and I
- 12:07told him the sun did come up this morning, I think,
- 12:10I know he thought maybe it wasn't, but it did.
- 12:13And you're probably going to be better off. You don't
- 12:16realize it or no, this loss will make you better
- 12:18in the long run. But they are playing at a
- 12:20very high level. They got their quarterback back healthy again.
- 12:25And of course defense with that defensive line is tell
- 12:30on wheels.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about all right, So Todd dodgers with us.
- 12:34The other reason I wanted to have you on was
- 12:36to get your memories of this game that was played
- 12:38forty years ago and my recollection. And I was a
- 12:41student in North Texas at the time, in young broadcaster
- 12:44and working with Bill Mercer in the North Texas games,
- 12:46and we had a game that night against McNeese. But
- 12:49I was in my apartment watching that fifteen to fifteen
- 12:54rain soaked tie between the top two teams in the country,
- 12:58and I know it had to be miserable for everybody,
- 13:00and uh, you know, for for coach Acres and the
- 13:03coaching staff as well. But let me get your thoughts
- 13:06on if you can take me back through that, what.
- 13:09Speaker 4: What was all going on that day?
- 13:10Speaker 1: And what you went through and what the team went
- 13:12through and what was an epic football game with Oklahoma.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, well, always an early wake up. My memory is
- 13:22the Texas so you gave even back in my day
- 13:25forty years ago, was always played right around in Doon
- 13:28and kickoff, so we got up early. It was raining
- 13:30straight down in Dallas, got to got to the game,
- 13:34kind of let up. Had you know the the pregame
- 13:37warm up was it was I always couldn't remember back
- 13:41It's just when I can't believe how many people are
- 13:43already here and it's reigning, uh in pregame warm up,
- 13:47it was like it just boggled me. Of course, I
- 13:51you know, I had only been in college for three
- 13:53years and came from sheltered port arch of Texas, so
- 13:56that that was something I always remember. How many people
- 13:58were there. But the game, the turf that at the
- 14:03Cotton Bow back in the day, everything was astra turf.
- 14:06But the turf was always really good to play on
- 14:10when it was dry because it was really soft, uh
- 14:14and and not brittle. And so we all anybody who
- 14:17played the Coton Bowl in Texas and Oklahoma places, players
- 14:20would would share that information with each other that they
- 14:23really liked playing it because of the turf. Well, well,
- 14:25it was wet that day. That labeled there, it's the
- 14:27sliickest thing you've ever played on when it's wet. And
- 14:30uh so, I know we got off to a good start.
- 14:33I think I threw a wheel route to to billboard
- 14:37Brian for a touchdown and then yeah, just back and forth.
- 14:40You know usually you know we were number one, uh
- 14:44they were number two. You know when we all kid
- 14:48each other today, you know, they talked about nil and
- 14:50you look, you look, and some kid is making them
- 14:53two point five million dollars in nil and everything. Tell
- 14:56the only the only.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Nil we ever had was our tickets, you know, back
- 15:00of the day.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Limitations up, but they were they people were people were
- 15:10pretty pretty interested in being at that game against the
- 15:12number one and the number two teams.
- 15:15Speaker 4: No doubt.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Yeah, you know you and I talked before.
- 15:19Speaker 3: I'll share it with the listeners.
- 15:20Speaker 2: You know, there was a you know with uh I
- 15:23got I got hit by bosworth sprint out past and
- 15:27I hit about the about the numbers, and I started sliding.
- 15:31I'm literally sliding on my belly like I was sliding
- 15:33in the third base or on the slippy slide and
- 15:36I am hauling tail into their bench and I get
- 15:39and I clip a bunch of people falling on top
- 15:41of me, and you know, I'm getting kicked and I'm
- 15:44getting need and you know, just the typical stuff in
- 15:46that game.
- 15:47Speaker 3: If if you get on the other team's sidelline and.
- 15:50Speaker 2: There's a there's a hand that reaches out from.
- 15:53Speaker 3: All of this, and I look up.
- 15:55Speaker 2: And it's coach Switzer and he said, t D He said,
- 15:58you ain't looking too good. And that's the coach. I've
- 16:01been better. I've been better. And so he helps me up,
- 16:03kind of pass me on the butt and sends me
- 16:04back to well. In one one.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Hand he was helping me up, but on the other hand, he.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Was cutting a cigarette, you know. And I was always, uh,
- 16:13you know, I always thought that was that was interesting
- 16:16that Coach Switzer was was smoking a cigarette on the sideline,
- 16:20and uh so I always tell that, I tell that
- 16:22story that I and I told my team that in
- 16:25the huddle is like a time out.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Not too long after that, I go caych.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Help never believe and I got when I got the
- 16:30hell knocked out of me on their sideline, I want
- 16:32to go, coach switcher is smoking cigarette.
- 16:35Speaker 3: They go, you're full of crap.
- 16:36Speaker 2: That's time, you know, and all that, and I go, no,
- 16:39I'm serious, I'm serious. And so the game's over with
- 16:42and it's a fifteen fifteen.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Time and it's just I mean, it was you know, I'll.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Never forget this. Keith Stanbury and I we went on
- 16:49recruiting business together. I knew Keith in Mount Pleasant, Texas,
- 16:53and so he you know, he's the one who who
- 16:56intercepted part the oukle will say it was a yeah,
- 17:01we will say we will say he landed out of bounds.
- 17:05Obviously it was ruled that way. I'm glad that there.
- 17:08I'm glad that there wasn't any uh replay looking at
- 17:13looking at looking at replay that we may not get
- 17:16the best end of that one. But anyway, so I'm
- 17:19talking to uh, I'm talking to Keith, and I said, hey,
- 17:23you got to tell me. I said, he smoke a cigarette.
- 17:26See he goes, yeah, he goes, man, when the game
- 17:28gets tight, you'll alway see him will get down and
- 17:30come by himself. He thinks, he thinks nobody knows what
- 17:32he's doing. Yeah, just a far up a heater down there.
- 17:38Speaker 1: I was going to ask you if you'd ever gotten
- 17:40any grief from anybody other than Oklahoma fans about that
- 17:43Stansbury play in the back of the end zone there
- 17:46that it was and it's been pointed out to me
- 17:49that the back judge who was right there on it,
- 17:50will say Southwest Conference official in a split crew and
- 17:53ruled it didn't complete and all that other stuff.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Uh.
- 17:56Speaker 1: And I'm meant to ask you if there if you'd
- 17:58ever gotten any grief from in anybody who wasn't Crimson
- 18:01and Cream about this.
- 18:04Speaker 3: No, no, no, all all the.
- 18:07Speaker 2: All the horns, all the horns people are still to
- 18:10this day.
- 18:11Speaker 3: It was he was out of bounce and me included.
- 18:14But and if he.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Wasn't out of bounds, he was passing interference on him
- 18:19before the ever cup the ball. So that that's my
- 18:21other deal.
- 18:22Speaker 4: There you go, there you go. That's a good story
- 18:24to stick to. Absolutely. Uh. You still sake to say.
- 18:29Speaker 1: I think I remember from our visits when I was
- 18:31over at the across town, when you would come over
- 18:33and visit, that that you still had a real abiding,
- 18:38rooting interest in the in the the welfare and the
- 18:41benefit of the Loghorns.
- 18:42Speaker 4: And you've got to know Sark really well.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Is that is that still hold for you, that you
- 18:47you still have that abiding, rooting interest in your alma mater.
- 18:50Is getting ready to take the field for a game
- 18:52like this.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Absolutely absolutely.
- 18:55Speaker 2: I've got five former players at Westlake that are playing
- 18:59for the Orange now, you know, with Connor Vassik and
- 19:03Ethan Burke and Connor Robertson and Mookie Taff and Bryce Chambers.
- 19:09All those guys just love him. I'm so proud of him.
- 19:11Did get to know coach start his first year year
- 19:15and a half. I was really a fan of his
- 19:18before he ever got the job, and I was thrilled
- 19:21when he got the job to.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Be our coach at University of Texas.
- 19:24Speaker 2: And he's such a savant as a play caller does does,
- 19:29in my opinion, the best job of being head coach
- 19:31and play caller of anybody else in the country. And
- 19:34that's tough to do.
- 19:36Speaker 4: But he manages it wonderfully.
- 19:40Speaker 3: And but no, I'm not going to the.
