- 0:00Welcome one and all. It's a Monday night. You're drinking with your friends and it's not even Monday anymore. It's Tuesday. There's been too much soccer. We drink too much. Welcome to the regulars. I'm Cody Deckard. I'm Tanya Ray Fox.
- 0:12It's a cold open Tuesday and we felt like trying shit. So welcome. This might be a new way to go. We got a lot to cover today.
- 0:29Especially for people who are tuning in like off the top of our stream. I feel like it's like nice to see us. We're here. We're officially here. You're not missing anything.
- 0:37Then you have to watch our artistic open. Which is a phenomenal open. Jesse Kivel's incredible Beach Hill Meditation. Great song by the way.
- 0:49And of course all our great shots that we got around town at the bars that we're kind of already regulars at. It was a genius on your part. Thank you for noticing.
- 1:00Really well done. I went to film school. That's what I did it for. Exactly that. It worked out. I've been watching a lot of podcasts lately pulling inspiration and I was like you know what?
- 1:12I think these people should be hearing from us sooner. They should hear our annoying voices off the top off the jump. I don't want to give them a reprieve too early.
- 1:20I think it's fair. I think it's a fair move. I like that we're trying things and that's what it's all about. Trying new shit.
- 1:26What a weekend it was. How was your 4th of July? How are you feeling? I was in Catalina Island. I got so drunk and so high at all times. It was great. It was very relaxing. I was asleep every night by 9.
- 1:37I had an interesting weekend. Our friends had extra tickets to the America 250 show at the Coliseum. How was it?
- 1:47It was wild. Chris and I got there way early. It was very bizarre. They were playing commercials on this stage. It was very much set up for the live stream for everybody to watch on.
- 1:57There was a lot of rigging. The sound was okay. They had a couple people come out. Anthony Ramos does the national anthem. I sit because I'm in Colin Kaepernick territory for the rest of my life until something changes.
- 2:11Anthony Ramos was great. Maren Morris came out and did a sound check style performance of a few of her hit songs. Chris and I were like, what are we really watching? It was gorgeous. It's the Coliseum. We're there. We're having a neutral.
- 2:24How was the Coliseum? I haven't been to the Coliseum in a while. It's great. I think the Coliseum is awesome because it's old school. It's nostalgic being at the Coliseum. The renovations have kept it in really good condition.
- 2:38I'm glad to hear it because I know they sunk in $250 million 10 years ago. It's still very much the Coliseum. It still very much feels like you're at an old school stadium. Also, the seats are very small, very close together, very Fenway.
- 2:50I've never loved it, but I do appreciate what it is. It's very Fenway-esque, so I'm used to it. It was cool, but then the best part. Chaka Khan comes out. I'm fucking listening.
- 3:02Yeah, and she is full band. Drummer is insane. Her guitarist is insane. She's in this gorgeous gold and black outfit. Her body is fire. She looks so hot. She can still sing so well. It's insane.
- 3:19She was so good. It was the highlight of the night. Incredible. Chris and I were like, holy fucking shit. She's still really good. And then, really exciting, a bunch of the teens in the crowd, old teens, maybe young 20s, really into Chaka Khan, which I loved.
- 3:39Then, Smashing Pumpkins comes out, because they're launching their tour. Never seen Smashing Pumpkins, and still great. They sounded great. Good to hear that, because I saw Billy about eight years ago, and boy, oh boy, could he not hit a fucking note on any of his songs.
- 3:55He still can't. He has to adjust, but he's, I think, over time, done a much better job of adjusting for the notes he can't hit anymore. I saw Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden. Now, I'm freely admitting it's not primetime Billy Joel anymore, but he's also down-tuned a lot of his songs, so he can still hit a lot of those notes.
- 4:13He's doing some of that. There's some stuff he's just never going to be able to do at this age, where his voice is at, but the performance was still great. The band was awesome, and it was cool. The energy was right. People were into it, which was really, really fun. That was cool. That's the recap.
- 4:28I'm glad you told me that, because the Coliseum, I did something, I wouldn't say irresponsible. I did something kind of different, and I don't know if I've even talked to you about it yet. My school, UCLA, where I went to, they always call me asking for donations, because they need my fucking money for some reason.
- 4:44You're the richest guy who went to UCLA.
- 4:46Yeah, they don't have better alumni. That being said, UCLA has been extremely good to me over the years. I'll give you an example of how UCLA has been very good to me. When I was a minor league baseball player, I gave hitting lessons out of the UCLA batting cages for seven years.
- 5:00That alone, them letting me do that, basically running a private business by myself out of their cages, and they didn't charge me for it, that saved my entire baseball career. I've funded my entire baseball career. It was a grind, so I was giving lessons for seven hours a day.
- 5:15But they allowed me to make money, which if it weren't for UCLA, I never would have been able to make it to the big leagues or have any semblance of the career that I have. So they got me, and the reason I asked you about the Coliseum is because you know I've always talked a lot of shit about the Rose Bowl.
- 5:31By the way, shit that I'm right about. It's a bitch to get in and out of. It's a pain. As bad as Dodger Stadium is to get in, because there's only four entrances in the Chavez Ravine, there's only four entrances in the fucking Rose Bowl, and they're bad entrances. You have at least three ways to get there. You're taking city streets.
- 5:50We took the train in and walked six minutes to- I'm glad you're telling me, because that's what I'm going to end up doing, because I got season tickets to the Rose Bowl this year, because UCLA has sunk- No, no, no, I'm talking about to the Coliseum. Okay, okay, I was about to get excited. I thought maybe the Pasadena train takes six minutes away.
- 6:08No, the Coliseum, that's my point, is so easy to get to. We literally got dropped off, six minute walk, right inside. I know, and it's a really- I prefer just even the- I think it's such an iconic L.A. look, you know, with the little- Yeah, it's badass.
- 6:26Rose Bowl is cool. It's huge. Both these places are huge. This thing has been around since like 1920. Well, here's the good news. UCLA has apparently sunk in like $300 million into the actual place, and they're building this new private area and bar area that I decided to buy tickets to. I'm going to basically watch it from this indoor-outdoor bar that's going to be in the end zone. I do want to go to that. I'm going to take you, at least one game. I will not be driving. No, neither am I. I plan to Uber there and Uber out.
- 6:54It's going to be a nice Uber out there.
- 6:56I'll figure it out how we're going to fucking do this, but I am not driving in and out of the Rose Bowl. I'd rather put a gun in my mouth. No shot.
- 7:02It sounds like it'll be worth it once we're there.
- 7:04No, no. Once we're there, it sounds like it's going to be absolutely awesome. I'm very excited for that, but let's get into it because we got headlines and holy shit, Tanya, the World Cup.
- 7:12The new biggest soccer fan in the world.
- 7:14Dude, I used to-
- 7:15This man loves football.
- 7:16I used to talk so much shit. By the way, I'm not wrong about the shit that I talk. The perception of soccer in this country was very, very clear, and it's because the MLS is boring.
- 7:27Yeah, I mean, I think that I will say, I'm not going to lie, I think now that you have been into the sport as much as you have because of the World Cup, I'd be surprised if you were as bored as you were before.
- 7:38Maybe, and by the way, I might try to tune into some MLS shit.
- 7:42Be more into MLS and NWSL now. You're going to notice there's obviously, there should be a difference in the level of soccer in the MLS versus the World Cup.
- 7:52There's a difference between the World Cup and a lot of other leagues, but I would be surprised if it wasn't at least more interesting to you than it was before.
- 8:00But, you know, the United States did not exactly give it their best shot in their final outing here, so not a great recommendation of United States men's soccer.
- 8:12It just got awful.
- 8:13Really, so you watched it out, I watched it at home, I was alone under the weather yesterday, and I was so glad I did because I was in a really, I was in a really bad mood.
- 8:22Like it really bummed me out.
- 8:23I knew that the United States could lose that game.
- 8:26I was under no belief that the United States was going to win the World Cup, but I did think that they could win that game.
- 8:31I did too.
- 8:32Especially with Bella Goon being back.
- 8:35We'll talk about that.
- 8:36That is coming.
- 8:37I don't want to get into it quite yet, but especially with him being back, and it was one mistake, one lazy, you know, showing after another.
- 8:47Later on in the show, we are going to talk about the backlash that Christian Pulisic is facing right now.
- 8:52He's getting a lot of it.
- 8:53So we're going to talk about that, especially the way it's being covered in the media, because I think that's a really interesting angle right now.
- 8:58But overall, there was, you know, my biggest takeaway was that this team looked like, outside of that sort of, this was supposed to be the golden era, right?
- 9:07The golden era, the new golden era since Tim Howard and Landon Donovan, and the days of the last time that they faced Belgium, which was a much, much more, like, you know, truly legitimate showing.
- 9:18This was supposed to be the next step up, and it looked like they were there, and it was as flat as it could have possibly been.
- 9:26The goal tending was awful.
- 9:27I don't understand why Pochettino really insisted on Matt Fries.
- 9:30The first time that he was really challenged in a game, he truly fell flat on his face, and I'm not trying to hate.
- 9:36I hate, I do not want to hate on players for the worst moments of their careers in front of billions of people.
- 9:43But that was a player that was not ready for that moment at all.
- 9:46And you saw it with that third goal on the Belgium side.
- 9:49I mean, that was, I mean, he cooed himself.
- 9:52And I understand what happened.
- 9:53I truly do understand what happened.
- 9:55But you know what could have solved everything?
- 9:57If he just kicked the fucking ball.
- 9:58I understood that he felt somebody in his back pocket that he did not know was there, but if he just kicked the fucking ball, no problem.
- 10:05And we're still in this game that we are god-awfully flat in.
- 10:08Give yourself time to get back to the goal.
- 10:10And, you know, you're caught out of position, okay.
- 10:12You don't want to fall on the ball and get hit in the head, fine.
- 10:15But you've got to do something there.
- 10:17The instincts have to kick in.
- 10:18And we have Matt Turner on the team with a lot more experience, who looked pretty good in the game that he played.
- 10:23So it's really frustrating, especially after watching, you know, the type of goal tending that we've watched all World Cup long.
- 10:30We've watched some of the best goal tending I've personally ever seen in any tournament, men's or women's.
- 10:35It's been incredible.
- 10:36And it turns out the greatest goalie ever is from a small Rhode Island-sized nation off the coast of Africa.
- 10:42And is 40.
- 10:43And is 40 and has worked as an electrician and a plumber.
- 10:46And likely will no longer have to work as either of those things anymore.
- 10:49But the best the United States could put out there was Matt Fries with his 16 caps or whatever he's had.
- 10:54That's so frustrating.
- 10:55And again, this is, please, I'm not, like, the last thing I want is for Matt Fries to feel worse.
- 11:00I don't think he was set up.
- 11:02He shouldn't have been the goaltender.
- 11:04I think he's a professional goaltender.
- 11:05I just don't think he should have been the professional goaltender for this tournament.
- 11:08And let's talk about, you know, we're going to talk more about that United States game and what happened.
- 11:13But let's talk about England versus Mexico, which was the exact opposite, I mean, of what we had to witness with the United States.
- 11:19It was amazing.
- 11:20Oh, my God.
- 11:21First of all, Mexico has been on fire this whole tournament.
- 11:25I really thought that Mexico went into that game as the better team.
- 11:30Wow.
- 11:31I did not expect you to say that.
- 11:32Do you mean that, like, players-wise?
- 11:34Or do you just think a melding of a team that actually runs on it?
- 11:37With the way they've been playing in the tournament, right?
- 11:40Like, they, I did not, ahead of this, I had no expectations of Mexico.
- 11:44Then they've been playing lights out, especially in the Azteca.
- 11:47They're playing in Azteca.
- 11:48They're playing in Mexico City.
- 11:49This is home field, and they have been clicking on all cylinders, whereas England has been sort of in an up and down, right?
- 11:56It's taken a lot of, like, heroics from Harry Kane, heroics here and there, whatever.
- 12:01Things have had to, like, kind of coalesce for them to win games.
- 12:03But they do have an incredibly deep squad.
- 12:05Okay.
- 12:07If you had told me they were going to be down to ten men for that long and have to defend that long and that they would hold on, I would never have believed you.
- 12:17This was like watching a Jonathan Demme film when it comes down to the amount of anxiety you felt at all times.
- 12:26Because Mexico had the pressure on for fucking 40 minutes, and it never stopped.
- 12:33They never stopped attacking.
- 12:34They never stopped trying.
- 12:36It was, I had no real dog in the race.
- 12:39I was rooting for Mexico because they're Mexico.
- 12:41I was rooting for Mexico, too.
- 12:42But I was like, I won't lose sleep if England goes forward.
- 12:45It means I get to listen to more fucking Wonderwall.
- 12:46That's great.
- 12:47But, like, holy shit.
- 12:49And I had Charlie Davies on the show this morning on The Fan.
- 12:52Oh, nice.
- 12:53And we've been having him on every week, and he's been phenomenal.
- 12:55But how he described the juxtaposition between Mexico and the United States in their final outing, he basically put it this way.
- 13:04Mexican fans will attack their own players if they don't like what they're seeing.
- 13:08They will throw beer at them.
- 13:09They will shout at them.
- 13:11They will hold them beyond accountability.
- 13:13Which I'm not a fan of.
- 13:14Which I'm not always a fan of.
- 13:15We don't need to be throwing beer at anybody.
- 13:16No, no, I agree.
- 13:17But, like, he was trying to make this example of what these fans are.
- 13:20There was not a single dry eye in that town.
- 13:22There was not a single Mexican fan that was not so proud of that team.
- 13:26They tried, and they died on that field.
- 13:28They gave everything they had, and they just couldn't get through.
- 13:32But they left it all out there.
- 13:34Sure as fuck can't say that about the U.S. team.
- 13:38That was fucking terrible.
- 13:40I mean, there is no better example of what it looks like to hold down the fort and really grind it out
- 13:48than both Mexico trying and England holding it down.
- 13:51I mean, first of all, Jude Bellingham played out of his fucking mind.
- 13:54So fucking crazy.
- 13:55It's the best I've seen him play at the international level.
- 13:57What a time to have the best international game you've ever had.
- 14:00And also just the most English of last names I've ever heard in my life.
- 14:04The whole name.
- 14:05The whole name, Jude Bellingham.
- 14:06I mean, they literally sing a Beatles song in him.
- 14:08It sounds like there should be a terrible Beef Wellington type of meal made after that day.
- 14:12Oh yeah, the Jude Bellingham.
- 14:13Oh, the Jude Bellingham.
- 14:14It's like the worst version of Beef Wellington.
- 14:18It's just a terrible roast, and I don't know.
- 14:22The old Jude Bellingham.
- 14:23Give me a Jude Bellingham.
- 14:25He's class A. He's class now.
- 14:27But he put on a performance, and the other person who stood out to everybody was Jordan Pickford, the keeper.
- 14:33Oh my god, right.
- 14:35Incredible moment for me because, as you know, I'm never wrong.
- 14:38And when I go to the mat for somebody, when I really don't let up, you should not be arguing with me.
- 14:45And I've been arguing with people on Jordan Pickford for the entire tournament.
- 14:50Actually for years now because he's the keeper for Everton.
- 14:53So I've watched just about every Jordan Pickford game that I could watch in the last decade.
- 14:58And he's one of the best keepers in the world.
- 15:01That's why he's been England's keeper for three World Cups.
- 15:04There is a very weird relationship that the English fans have with him because he is undersized.
- 15:10And he plays a specific style.
- 15:13He's easily the best keeper they've ever had in the history of their country.
- 15:19And that performance did not surprise me.
- 15:22I knew he had it in him, and I've been telling everybody the difference between England and a lot of these countries
- 15:28is that they have one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the world, and he's not afraid.
- 15:33If you had to pick one goalkeeper to be in that situation, down a man, and have to defend for that long,
- 15:40I don't care who takes some of the best that I've ever played, he's one of the best you could pick.
- 15:45He does not give a fuck.
- 15:47That whole aggressiveness, going out and getting the ball, not being afraid, getting it downfield, the pace,
- 15:53seeing him quarterback the team from where he was, that's Jordan Pickford.
- 15:58That's what he does, and he will be the difference maker for this team if they are able to win a Cup.
- 16:03So it was really fun to watch that.
- 16:05The whole match was incredible to watch.
- 16:07And again, the juxtaposition of seeing that over to the U.S. side,
- 16:11and yeah, we're going to talk more about the U.S. side and what else contributed to the fucked-up nature of the entire 48 hours.
- 16:19Trust me, I'm still just sitting here, cannot believe what the fuck has happened in the last four and a half days.
- 16:26It's just been batshit crazy, and frankly, horrifically embarrassing.
- 16:31So I really am excited to talk to you about that specifically.
- 16:34But kind of to get back over to the good things of the World Cup,
- 16:37before we get to the outrageous and abhorrent fucking controversy and, I don't know, corruption,
- 16:44which FIFA is really good at, let's talk about the game today.
- 16:48Because holy shit, one game I was bored to tears, of course, until the end.
- 16:53PKs always brings it back, yeah.
- 16:55My God, PKs are fucking electric.
- 16:57And of course, the outrageousness of watching Egypt fall to pieces with only, what, 11 minutes to go in this matchup?
- 17:05I think it was 10 minutes.
- 17:07My God, I cannot fucking believe that happened.
- 17:12And by the way, it was really that last, in extra time,
- 17:16that last five minutes in the stoppage time when they got that final goal.
- 17:20That final goal, I cannot wait to hear your takeaway from that.
- 17:25Because my takeaway from that was, what the fuck are you guys doing?
- 17:29They really wanted to get a foul for Salah, I get it, but it did not look like one even a little to me.
- 17:36But you might have a different read.
- 17:38I'm sorry, it looked like it was mild contact and he went down.
- 17:41They were talking about it on the broadcast.
- 17:43Rules analysts were saying, they probably should have varred it.
- 17:48But here's the thing, Egypt played the better game, the whole game, right?
- 17:54It was inarguable.
- 17:56We've been talking about FIFA corruption, we're going to talk more about FIFA corruption.
- 17:59But the reality is, Messi had set a World Cup record for,
- 18:04nobody's ever missed two penalty kicks in a World Cup tournament, let alone in the same game.
- 18:10Truly not a record you want to set when you're the greatest of all time.
- 18:14By the way, wasn't going to stop us from saying that, but he was not having a good game.
- 18:18He was not having a good game.
- 18:20And there was a shift in the way it was sort of being officiated.
- 18:25There was a speed that they suddenly got.
- 18:27Listen, Messi is an otherworldly player, but he's still 39 years old.
- 18:33And it takes a little bit of help from the team and everybody else to get him going.
- 18:37He had already missed a couple kicks.
- 18:39It feels like the result was a little bit...
- 18:45Forced?
- 18:46Manipulated.
- 18:47Of course.
- 18:49Lakers-Kingsmen.
- 18:51It doesn't feel great.
- 18:52It doesn't.
- 18:53It feels like all the hosts are gone, Cristiano Ronaldo is out, Messi's down 2-0 with 10 minutes to go.
- 19:01He's missed both his penalty kicks.
- 19:03And then they win the game 3-0.
- 19:05Now, listen.
- 19:06Sports are crazy.
- 19:07This shit happens.
- 19:08Sports are crazy.
- 19:09This shit happens.
- 19:10But, you know, as I was kind of watching back, I'm like, man.
- 19:14I can't see anything that's definitively like there's the thing they did wrong that makes it look like it was manipulated.
- 19:22But I can't tell you that it looked the same as it did.
- 19:25There was...
- 19:29I don't know.
- 19:30Everything's rotten in Denmark, is what you're saying.
- 19:32I get it.
- 19:33And trust me, I...
- 19:34Our team has not played well.
- 19:35They only lost to Cabo Verde.
- 19:36Dude, it crossed my mind, too.
- 19:37I'm not going to sit here and pretend it didn't.
- 19:39But at the same time, you know, you and I have watched this.
- 19:42We've watched this with these goats forever.
- 19:44Tiger Woods coming back and winning the Masters.
- 19:46Tom Brady playing until he was 45.
- 19:48Shit happens, man.
- 19:49LeBron James is 41 years old.
- 19:50Serena Williams...
- 19:51And he's dominating the free agent market now.
- 19:53Serena Williams is still playing fucking tennis.
- 19:55Yeah, she is.
- 19:56We just live in an era where these players are not...
- 20:00They're just on another fucking level.
- 20:01Longevity is...
- 20:02But I'm really bummed because I'm over it with Messi.
- 20:05I don't find him particularly compelling anymore.
- 20:08I think watching him when he's at his best is amazing.
- 20:11I just...
- 20:12He's not at his best anymore.
- 20:13I mean, I think people don't understand that, like,
- 20:15watching Messi in his prime was something fucking else.
- 20:18And right now, it just very much feels like Messi's getting a lot of opportunities.
- 20:22He's gotten away with handballs.
- 20:24He's gotten away with red card tackles.
- 20:26He got away with a red card.
- 20:27He's gotten away with a lot on the field.
- 20:29And it's like, yeah, if you give one of the best players in the world
- 20:31free reign to do whatever the fuck they want on the field,
- 20:34then they're going to stay with Mbappe and the goals, you know,
- 20:38and that's what they want.
- 20:39That's what they want.
- 20:40They want France-Argentina.
- 20:42Yeah.
- 20:43Of course they do.
- 20:44I know what they want.
- 20:45And the whole world...
- 20:46Right now, the whole world is fuck Messi, fuck Argentina.
- 20:49Nobody's on their side.
- 20:50So, you know, uphill battle in terms of getting public support.
- 20:55But FIFA's got their back.
- 20:57I'm really...
- 20:58I'm still...
- 20:59I enjoy Spain.
- 21:00I'm going to continue enjoying Spain.
- 21:02I'm enjoying England.
- 21:03I'm going to continue enjoying England.
- 21:05And France is always fun to watch.
- 21:07It's Mbappe for me, for sure.
- 21:09No matter what, I got things to watch.
- 21:11It's, like, annoying because, like,
- 21:12English fans fuck the whole situation a lot of times,
- 21:15although some of them are great, some of them are awful,
- 21:17just like Americans, right?
- 21:18Some American fans are the best and some of them are the worst.
- 21:20And a lot of us suck.
- 21:21And that's what I feel about the English fans.
- 21:23And...
- 21:24But their team, man, like, dude...
- 21:27And I love Harry Kane.
- 21:28I love Bukayo Saka.
- 21:29I love Marcus Rashford.
- 21:31I love these players.
- 21:32Jed Spence is my new favorite player.
- 21:34Like, I like their team.
- 21:35So, yeah.
- 21:37It's...
- 21:38The World Cup's been outrageous.
- 21:39We haven't even mentioned Holland and everything that he's done.
- 21:42And, whew!
- 21:43Yep, yep.
- 21:44The tournament ain't over, man.
- 21:45We're about to get Norway-England.
- 21:47So, you know, it's tough.
- 21:49Someone's got to go.
- 21:50Holland versus Jude.
- 21:52Listen, I just want...
- 21:54I'm going to take the Elmo approach in this one.
- 21:56I just want everyone to have a good time.
- 21:58I just want everyone to have fun on this one.
- 22:00Elmo loves everybody.
- 22:01Everybody.
- 22:02Let's not make it a thing.
- 22:03Let's not do that.
- 22:04Let's not make this one a thing.
- 22:05Thank you.
- 22:06Which, by the way, was a fucking hilarious video.
- 22:08All right.
- 22:09So, let's get into...
- 22:10I have a different take that I would like to open with on our next subject.
- 22:13Okay, let's do it.
- 22:14Because we're going to get into, for the next couple of segments,
- 22:17the outrageous racism in the World Cup.
- 22:20Yeah.
- 22:21I want to say that it's made me smile a little bit in a weird way,
- 22:27and I'm going to tell you why.
- 22:28Dude's smiling at racism.
- 22:29Nope, I'm not smiling at racism.
- 22:31It's just good to know we're not the fucking only fucked up ones.
- 22:35Thank God we're not the only fucking nightmare out there.
- 22:39We're a nightmare, but Argentina's out there.
- 22:42Oh, yeah.
- 22:43Holy shit, and there are senators in Paraguay.
- 22:47What the fuck is going on?
- 22:50I've been trying to tell people for a long time.
- 22:52Holy shit.
- 22:53We've talked about it a little bit on this show.
- 22:55Soccer is a horrifically racist sport.
- 22:58Dude.
- 22:59And we have been so blessed to have a really wonderful cultural exchange
- 23:02in this World Cup, and things have been really great,
- 23:04but now we're getting down in the nitty-gritty,
- 23:05and we're getting down to the difficult rounds,
- 23:07and we're getting down to people losing favorites, getting kicked out,
- 23:10and things are getting ugly.
- 23:12And this is a very racist sport.
- 23:14I mean, we talk about it all the time in the United States with every league,
- 23:17and we're always going to hold them accountable,
- 23:19but the level to which these fans feel comfortable being outwardly racist,
- 23:23senators and public figures being outwardly racist,
- 23:25some of the stuff that the broadcasters have been saying,
- 23:28fashion schweinsteiger,
- 23:30there have been some horrific shit said by these broadcasters.
- 23:34Really?
- 23:35I've missed some shit.
- 23:36Oh, yeah, talking about how –
- 23:39so I think it was a former Paraguayan coach, maybe,
- 23:43talking about how black players don't have the concentration
- 23:48to play for more than 60 to 80 minutes.
- 23:50What?
- 23:51Fashion schweinsteiger said something that was super racist
- 23:54that I can't even remember now.
- 23:56Like, it's been really bad.
- 23:57It's been getting worse and worse.
- 23:59And these players have –
- 24:00so the story that we're going to kind of talk about now
- 24:04is something that Kylian Mbappé dealt with from a Paraguayan senator.
- 24:09Now, Mbappé has been dealing with racism in Europe.
- 24:13Shocker, right?
- 24:15But this senator, just for everybody who's not up to par,
- 24:21Amaria described Mbappé as a colonized Cameroonian
- 24:25desperately trying to pass himself off as French
- 24:27and as a brute who had not learned to write.
- 24:30Paraguay's players should have slapped him after the match, she said.
- 24:34She also made reference to some other stuff that –
- 24:40honestly, just, like, it's starting to feel uncomfortable to read.
- 24:44Not going to repeat that shit.
- 24:45So Mbappé – I mean, even reading that was tough.
- 24:47Mbappé responded,
- 24:49Madame Celeste Amaria, you are a despicable woman
- 24:51and unworthy of your position.
- 24:53You do not represent Paraguay, that country,
- 24:55which has sweated passion and honor through their competition.
- 25:00He said that her tirade was a distraction
- 25:02from the tremendous accomplishment of Paraguay at the World Cup
- 25:05and added, through your recklessness and your brazen racism,
- 25:08the entire world has forgotten the journey and historic effort
- 25:10that your players accomplished during this World Cup,
- 25:13making a way for an incompetent woman
- 25:16who gives the worst possible image of her country.
- 25:20She continued on and responded to him in this crazy long letter
- 25:23where she deflected and said more stupid shit
- 25:25and talked about a bunch of other stuff.
- 25:27Again, her words are really rough,
- 25:29but it's very easy to find it.
- 25:31But she used nearly half the letter to criticize Mbappé's response
- 25:34and demanded an apology from him,
- 25:36accusing him of gender-based violence
- 25:38and how he'd spoken about her
- 25:40and threatening legal action if he did not retract his comments.
- 25:43Who are you to call me indignant or despicable
- 25:45when you don't even know me, she asked.
- 25:47And remember, she started calling him racist slurs.
- 25:51This lady's out of her fucking mind.
- 25:53This is a fucking psychopath.
- 25:55And this man is, like, going after a World Cup title,
- 25:59is in the lead, you know, tying, basically,
- 26:01essentially, for the golden boot right now.
- 26:03He is doing everything he possibly can.
- 26:05He's one of the most beloved players in the world.
- 26:07And no matter what he fucking does,
- 26:10no matter how well he plays,
- 26:12no matter how classy he is, by the way,
- 26:14he didn't hold her response,
- 26:16he didn't hold the Paraguayan people responsible
- 26:18for what their senator said.
- 26:19He did not say it was a reflection of the country.
- 26:21Now, Paraguay played a pretty shady game in that game, right?
- 26:24Oh, man, they were doing everything they possibly could.
- 26:27They were doing everything they could.
- 26:29But at the end of the day, they knew who they were up against,
- 26:32and they were trying to get away with it,
- 26:33and I don't necessarily blame them,
- 26:35but neither did Mbappe.
- 26:37He was never going to do it.
- 26:38He never stooped.
- 26:39And the class, like, the integrity that it took
- 26:43in that moment to respond that way,
- 26:45his response to be so gracious as to remind her
- 26:49how lovely the people of her country are
- 26:52and how she is a fucking embarrassment to them,
- 26:54how could we not relate to that
- 26:56with what we've been dealing with, right?
- 26:58I mean, truly, it was so wild
- 27:00because at the same exact time that this was happening,
- 27:03so many Americans are being attacked
- 27:05for what Trump did to supposedly interfere
- 27:10with getting Balagoon back on the team
- 27:14with the red card suspension.
- 27:16And I dealt with it all weekend
- 27:18because I talk about this a lot on the internet.
- 27:20People, you know, saying some pretty horrific shit
- 27:23about Balagoon because of what Trump did.
- 27:28And here's Mbappe, an actual player
- 27:31who has endured the racist abuse himself,
- 27:36never looking to hold anyone accountable but her.
- 27:39And it's like, he said it.
- 27:41He just said, like, one of the best examples that you...
- 27:45I almost hesitate to even call it a good example
- 27:47because I don't even want people to think
- 27:49or respond this way.
- 27:51Like, you don't actually have to be this gracious.
- 27:53He just happened to be, you know what I mean?
- 27:55Like, if he had just popped off
- 27:57and said everything that he was thinking,
- 27:59if he had been a fucking asshole, I would have blamed him, you know?
- 28:02But it was a really well-executed response,
- 28:05and we are dealing with, you know,
- 28:09very much having to try to separate
- 28:11a people from their leaders.
- 28:15Is the average person struggling with that in this climate?
- 28:19I would say the average intelligent person
- 28:21is struggling with that in this climate, yes.
- 28:24I don't... What do you mean?
- 28:26I don't think as many people are struggling with it
- 28:28as they should be.
- 28:30That's my point. They can't do it.
- 28:32They're not separating.
- 28:34Oh, okay. I'm sorry. Then I misunderstood what you said.
- 28:36The leader... Like, separating leadership from the people.
- 28:39Oh, yeah. Yes.
- 28:41The idiots can't do it, right?
- 28:43It takes a lot of emotional intelligence
- 28:45to look at a group of people who are being represented by,
- 28:47I don't know, say, Trump,
- 28:49and not hold soccer fans and, you know,
- 28:53Flo Balagoon accountable for what Trump did.
- 28:58And it's just, you know,
- 29:01on top of what Mbappe was dealing with,
- 29:03there was a lot of people saying that Flo
- 29:05should be sitting out of the game because of Trump.
- 29:07It's an embarrassment. This is a joke.
- 29:10That's, like...
- 29:12We are wading into territory
- 29:14constantly with these guys
- 29:16that just seems to be, like, you know...
- 29:19I mean, listen.
- 29:21Like, when it comes down to the Balagoon situation,
- 29:23I can't stress enough how annoying this was.
- 29:25And I hate that Balagoon had to deal with this at all
- 29:27because this is why the whole...
- 29:30This whole fucking Trump... I mean, the Trump thing...
- 29:32Let's just go ahead and get into it
- 29:34because it's so fucking batshit.
- 29:36I mean, the amount of blatant and open corruption,
- 29:38whether or not he actually had to do with it or not,
- 29:40I'm willing to bet he didn't have much to do with it.
- 29:42But the fact that he's going on national television,
- 29:44international television, and saying that he is
- 29:46and having other senators come on the podium
- 29:48to say, thank you, Mr. Trump,
- 29:50for getting that red carpet,
- 29:52while FIFA's out putting out a statement,
- 29:54which, by the way, Trump's statement
- 29:56is a direct violation of two bylaws,
- 29:58massive bylaws, to the FIFA World Cup,
- 30:00which is now opening up a massive...
- 30:02Yeah, because then Gianni Infantino had to come out
- 30:04and be like, oh, dude, I hear from people's, like,
- 30:06that's all the goddamn time.
- 30:08Yeah, so he has to come out and do this, and by the way...
- 30:10And make no mistake, U.S. losing yesterday
- 30:12all of a sudden might have been
- 30:14the best possible thing for business for FIFA
- 30:16because now this whole fucking thing kind of goes away
- 30:18at the moment. Thank fucking God for them
- 30:20because, trust me, I know,
- 30:22I know that president is well aware
- 30:24about the indictments that happened to his predecessors.
- 30:26So, yeah, I think he's always worried
- 30:28about this type of shit and how this actually
- 30:30currently looks. Looks fucking bad.
- 30:32That being said,
- 30:34the vibe around this USA team
- 30:36going into this weekend
- 30:38was still staggeringly
- 30:40high and through the roof
- 30:42even with the red card of Bellingham
- 30:44that a lot of us didn't agree with, but then again,
- 30:46we do understand the rules
- 30:48and we were going to get passed and we were going to be fine,
- 30:50but the way this was done and how it was done
- 30:52within 24 hours of basically the match
- 30:54looked fucking terrible.
- 30:56And then immediately denying
- 30:58any type of appeal from Belgium
- 31:00looked fucking terrible.
- 31:02There is no appeal process.
- 31:04I know, there's no appeal process.
- 31:06It wasn't like they were like,
- 31:08oh, no, we usually allow it. There isn't.
- 31:10And FIFA's, by the way,
- 31:12reasoning for suspending
- 31:14Bellingham's fucking suspension for a year
- 31:16had no explanation
- 31:18to it other than we're suspending
- 31:20it for a year.
- 31:22So that's the other thing, too.
- 31:24When they did it for Ronaldo heading into the tournament,
- 31:26he was supposed to miss at least a game,
- 31:28potentially two of the first games,
- 31:30but they also had his red card
- 31:32suspension suspended
- 31:34or deferred.
- 31:36He was suspended three games.
- 31:38They deferred two of them.
- 31:40That happened a week after
- 31:42Cristiano Ronaldo came to the United States for the first time
- 31:44in 12 years, met with Trump, and a week later
- 31:46he has this red card deferred.
- 31:48So, again, there's no
- 31:50real explanation for these things.
- 31:52FIFA is so
- 31:54corrupt and
- 31:56there really is such a lack of
- 31:58transparency around these processes.
- 32:00You know,
- 32:02the red card itself was so
- 32:04unprecedented.
- 32:06Goal scorers getting a red card, that
- 32:08hadn't happened since 2006 when
- 32:10Zinedine Zidane head-butted a dude
- 32:12in the chest, very clearly a red card.
- 32:14It was an
- 32:16unprecedented red card, and then it was an unprecedented
- 32:18reversal, and what
- 32:20ended up happening was that a bunch
- 32:22of people felt like
- 32:24that was Balagoon's fault.
- 32:26First of all, Balagoon just deciding
- 32:28to sit out of a World Cup game doesn't come without
- 32:30consequences. You can't actually do it.
- 32:32There's actually a bunch of shit that could have happened
- 32:34to him. Nobody understands.
- 32:36I was seeing hundreds
- 32:38of comments from people saying, do I watch soccer?
- 32:40No. Am I familiar with the
- 32:42World Cup? No.
- 32:44Paragraph on what Flo
- 32:46Balagoon and the USMNT
- 32:48should do. Because as soon as
- 32:50Trump involved himself, everybody thought, well, this is a
- 32:52politics story now, so I get to weigh in.
- 32:54I get to weigh in on this player.
- 32:56The future of his whole fucking
- 32:58career, this 23-year-old,
- 33:00I get to weigh in irresponsibly
- 33:02because it's Trump, and we get to talk
- 33:04about whatever fucking Trump does.
- 33:06What a fucking nightmare.
- 33:08It was a nightmare, and the person
- 33:10suffering the most from all of this
- 33:12was a dude who did nothing.
- 33:14Nothing. Nothing wrong at all, and that's
- 33:16the worst part, and that's the other thing I want to point out.
- 33:18I'm talking about the vibes about this USA team.
- 33:20They were phenomenal. I loved this team.
- 33:22Everyone loved this team.
- 33:24I still love this team because here's the thing.
- 33:26By the way, Flo played pretty good.
- 33:28Here's the thing.
- 33:30Were they the recipients and benefactors?
- 33:32Well, despite the ending of how
- 33:34the game actually went,
- 33:36I don't look at the team USA at all for being
- 33:38corrupt. I don't look at Pelican being corrupt at all.
- 33:40Obviously. Were they the beneficiaries
- 33:42of a corrupt thing?
- 33:44Yeah. By the way, welcome to
- 33:46international soccer. Everybody's like,
- 33:48this is unprecedented. It's not.
- 33:50It's simply
- 33:52not. It's fucking ugly.
- 33:54It definitely is, but I can't...
- 33:56What normally, and someone pointed this out, which I loved,
- 33:58is like, no, this shit happens all the time.
- 34:00Just normally, people's presidents aren't stupid
- 34:02enough to fucking tweet about it.
- 34:04Yes, and I got to also say this.
- 34:06Those of you
- 34:08that weirdly were taking
- 34:10victory laps over this,
- 34:12the fact that this became such political theater
- 34:14and fucking nonsense made me so
- 34:16fucking sick and so fucking embarrassed.
- 34:18It was so disingenuous.
- 34:20Because last week, the same motherfucker
- 34:22tried to get birthright citizenship
- 34:24fucking removed from the country
- 34:26of which Pelican is only a member
- 34:28of the team due to birthright
- 34:30fucking citizenship.
- 34:32What the fuck is this?
- 34:34Fuck all of you.
- 34:36Fuck all of you. This is
- 34:38fucking nonsense. He's like the poster child
- 34:40for birthright citizenship. He absolutely is.
- 34:42In the best way, by the way.
- 34:44Those of you that have used this,
- 34:46fuck you. Fuck you.
- 34:48Nothing else to say.
- 34:50You hypocritical fucks.
- 34:52Oh, I hate this.
- 34:54The only person I'm more mad at
- 34:56right now than all you hypocritical fucks
- 34:58is his teammate, who we're going to get to
- 35:00in a little bit. Before we move on
- 35:02from the extreme racism constantly
- 35:04in this goddamn World Cup,
- 35:06I show Speed, who is
- 35:08everywhere, and perhaps
- 35:10annoyingly so, but actually
- 35:12he's a pretty good kid, man.
- 35:14He really is a good kid.
- 35:16He's an iPad
- 35:18kid who grew up to be a streamer,
- 35:20but
- 35:22does a lot. He's making a killing.
- 35:24He does a lot. He's a thoughtful
- 35:26person. I don't know much about him.
- 35:28He's a kid.
- 35:30He's grown up basically
- 35:32on camera in front of these people.
- 35:34Got a gajillion followers
- 35:36and live stream viewers all the time.
- 35:38By all
- 35:40accounts, he's a good enough kid.
- 35:42I've seen interactions with him between people.
- 35:44He's respectful. He's kind.
- 35:46He's thoughtful.
- 35:48He was streaming.
- 35:50He has over 56 million
- 35:52YouTube subscribers. This man's
- 35:54one of the more famous people in an entire generation
- 35:56of Americans.
- 35:58He was
- 36:00live streaming from the game at Hard Rock Stadium
- 36:02while Cape Verde was
- 36:04playing
- 36:06Argentina.
- 36:08A fan near him
- 36:10was yelling
- 36:12a racial slur
- 36:14at him and told him to go home.
- 36:16A fan was also heard telling the streamer
- 36:18to go cry
- 36:20at the zoo.
- 36:22These were Argentinian fans
- 36:24who are
- 36:26the country itself and their fans
- 36:28notoriously wildly racist.
- 36:30They're certainly not doing anything
- 36:32to assuage us of that notion.
- 36:34He was
- 36:36like, what's your problem?
- 36:38He was doing nothing,
- 36:40saying nothing to them. There was no reason
- 36:42for this to be happening. There's never any reason
- 36:44to have a racial slur yelled at you, but just
- 36:46to set the stage for what was going on.
- 36:48The players
- 36:50are dealing with racism
- 36:52from fans, from crowd people,
- 36:54from senators.
- 36:56The crowd and the fans are dealing
- 36:58with racism from other people
- 37:00in the crowd and other fans.
- 37:02The people who've
- 37:04done absolutely nothing are dealing with racism
- 37:06for playing in games.
- 37:08This is
- 37:10the kind of thing where sometimes
- 37:12I genuinely feel like I'm losing my mind
- 37:14because
- 37:16no matter how much
- 37:18something will bring us together,
- 37:20there's
- 37:22something just so
- 37:24fucking pervasive about anti-blackness
- 37:26specifically.
- 37:28All of these incidents we've talked about,
- 37:30all of them have one thing
- 37:32in common. French,
- 37:34American,
- 37:36Cape Verdean,
- 37:38doesn't matter what we're talking about.
- 37:40It's always
- 37:42anti-blackness.
- 37:44With the increase
- 37:46of the
- 37:48presence of African
- 37:50teams in this tournament and moving
- 37:52forward with the
- 37:54sort of influx
- 37:56of interest in African
- 37:58soccer and football, we're going to see more of it.
- 38:00I've
- 38:02actually talked about it on this show before.
- 38:04Vinny, Vinicius Jr.
- 38:06on Brazil.
- 38:08Very famous situation.
- 38:10Which has led to things in the World Cup.
- 38:12You can't cover your mouth on the pitch
- 38:14because of something that happened to him.
- 38:16A couple of people have already been red-carded
- 38:18for it.
- 38:20You really can't help yourself.
- 38:22You know the fucking rules. Fucking figure it out.
- 38:24You really can't stop yourself from being racist.
- 38:26Fucking wild.
- 38:28Racism is everywhere,
- 38:30but the anti-blackness
- 38:32specifically is just
- 38:34so pervasive internationally.
- 38:36America, we've got our
- 38:38fucking problems.
- 38:40I think that
- 38:42a lot of
- 38:44countries get a
- 38:46real kick out of how much
- 38:48we call out our own racism.
- 38:50Because we call it out so much,
- 38:52because we talk about it so much, because our
- 38:54black population, because black Americans
- 38:56are so outspoken and such good
- 38:58advocates for themselves.
- 39:00The rest of the world
- 39:02believes that they don't have the same type of racism.
- 39:04No. No.
- 39:06You absolutely do.
- 39:08It might come from different places, and maybe you didn't have
- 39:10chattel slavery, or maybe you did because it certainly was in other
- 39:12places. But regardless,
- 39:14no. Now, if you'd like to
- 39:16take a page out of black Americans' books
- 39:18and learn how to stand up for
- 39:20yourselves, they've got the fucking playbook.
- 39:22But don't tell me that
- 39:24the rest of the world isn't dealing with this, because your people
- 39:26came over here and acted fucking crazy.
- 39:28By the way, I'm going to
- 39:30leave this to you right now. Should we
- 39:32stay on the course of racism with
- 39:34our next story, or should we take a break
- 39:36and talk about LeBron James? Let's take a break
- 39:38and talk about LeBron James. Let's take a break and talk about
- 39:40LeBron James. I would love to.
- 39:42We're going to break, talk about LeBron
- 39:44James, go back to a
- 39:46different form of racism in a different sport.
- 39:48We didn't have enough of that already.
- 39:50Back to American racism. Good old
- 39:52American past-time racism. The old-fashioned
- 39:54racism. Yeah. LeBron's
- 39:56next team predictions
- 39:58and their current odds are
- 40:00something I've been kind of watching, kind of
- 40:02tracking. Now, I don't bet.
- 40:04I don't use these apps. I just kind of Google
- 40:06it, see what's what. I will
- 40:08say, like, prediction market
- 40:10apps are actually getting
- 40:12frighteningly close to
- 40:14predicting things. Okay, so that's, yeah.
- 40:16I haven't even necessarily been paying attention to how
- 40:18accurate they are. It's fascinating.
- 40:20So prediction markets are doing a lot better than
- 40:22your average sports book. Yes, because
- 40:24it's basically taking up to
- 40:26the moment things. So it's honestly where the money goes
- 40:28and where the money changes and people shifting
- 40:30opinions. So it actually gives you
- 40:32a to-the-point, actually weirdly
- 40:34accurate view on things that are
- 40:36happening. Like, for instance, elections.
- 40:38I knew Spencer Pratt was
- 40:40dead on arrival.
- 40:42Oh, really? About a week before it happened.
- 40:44Oh, shit. Why didn't you tell me? I was stressed out.
- 40:46I did tell you. You did? I think you were too stressed
- 40:48I couldn't believe it.
- 40:50I was like, I don't have enough evidence for this.
- 40:52Yeah, yeah, no. I was going off
- 40:54those numbers and those numbers, his numbers were drastically
- 40:56getting lower. People were buying, trying to buy
- 40:58out of that stock. Okay, okay.
- 41:00And that made me go, okay, people are trying to dump
- 41:02this stock right now. Do you think that's just like a lot of insider trading there?
- 41:04Because it's so unregulated.
- 41:06For lack of a better phrase, yes. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:08It's prediction markets.
- 41:10Come on. Yeah, it's just a lot of,
- 41:12it's not regulated. So right now,
- 41:14essentially,
- 41:16like, if you're saying that this is correct,
- 41:18the latest consensus probabilities from prediction
- 41:20markets like Cal Sheehan and traditional sportsbooks
- 41:22show that Cleveland
- 41:24is separating itself from the pack in terms of
- 41:26the likelihood that LeBron James will land.
- 41:28Today is the reason why I changed my mind.
- 41:30I thought literally, I thought 100%
- 41:32this was going to be Golden State.
- 41:34I now officially don't think that anymore.
- 41:36I think he's going back to Cleveland. Because of Donovan Mitchell.
- 41:38The Donovan Mitchell deal, the fact that Harden hasn't
- 41:40gotten done yet, and that to me
- 41:42gave me bells and whistles.
- 41:44Not that Harden's going elsewhere. They're trying to figure out the money
- 41:46to make everything kind of work. That's what I think.
- 41:48Do you think Harden wants to play with Harden?
- 41:50I wouldn't be shocked. I would.
- 41:52I'm a little confused on how it'll work.
- 41:54How on the ball he is and everything.
- 41:56He's also kind of like, he's
- 41:58a really terrible playoff.
- 42:00Like, LeBron has got to be looking to try
- 42:02to do something with Cleveland before he retires.
- 42:04That's what I'm thinking. But I don't know. Maybe LeBron
- 42:06thinks he could be the one that does it. I don't know.
- 42:08He's the one, imagine he's the one who
- 42:10takes James Harden.
- 42:12That's his greatest accomplishment.
- 42:14People would genuinely, I think,
- 42:16if he won a fifth ring with
- 42:18James Harden, it dragged him.
- 42:20It's over. The go
- 42:22conversation is beyond over.
- 42:24It's outrageous.
- 42:26I don't know, man. That Donovan
- 42:28Mitchell signing today and knowing
- 42:30that Harden hasn't happened just made me go,
- 42:32listen how quickly the Lakers had about
- 42:34faced and got all these deals done. Look at all
- 42:36the things that all these teams
- 42:38have done in a short amount of time. Yet
- 42:40Cleveland is really taking their time.
- 42:42Somebody knows something. There's a
- 42:44reason why Cleveland's taking their time. And I
- 42:46think he's going to Cleveland. So
- 42:48they have it at 57 to 58%.
- 42:50Which is high, by the way. Which is fucking crazy high.
- 42:52Way higher than I thought.
- 42:54The traditional sports book has
- 42:56it at minus 122.
- 42:58They had
- 43:00the next after that is the Miami
- 43:02Heat at 17 to 19%.
- 43:04I think the Miami Heat would be
- 43:06so fun. I think him returning to the Heat
- 43:08just because of the Giannis Bam thing.
- 43:10That would be fun as fuck.
- 43:12That's a way more fun team than the choke
- 43:14artists known as Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.
- 43:16I also think Golden State would still be kind of
- 43:18interesting. I know you don't
- 43:20but I wouldn't hate it.
- 43:22Again, I don't know if people
- 43:24just to reiterate, I want to
- 43:26preserve my memory
- 43:28of Steph and LeBron as the
- 43:302004 Paris Olympics. It was perfect.
- 43:32It was the perfect
- 43:34couple of weeks. The two of them
- 43:36with Kevin Durant was that
- 43:38big three. The old dudes
- 43:40coming in and just balling.
- 43:42The moments that they had. It was
- 43:44perfect. Let that be the thing
- 43:46that lives in our memory. That's
- 43:48why. It's less about would
- 43:50they be cool. Of course they'd be fucking cool.
- 43:52I have my perfect moment.
- 43:54If you have the perfect breakup.
- 43:56If you say goodbye
- 43:58and you're like, we had a great relationship.
- 44:00What the fuck is a perfect breakup?
- 44:02I don't think I've ever had a good breakup
- 44:04in my life. All my breakups are terrible
- 44:06and I think I don't talk to any of them. This is the point.
- 44:08It's almost impossible. It's almost
- 44:10impossible to end something perfectly.
- 44:12To have the perfect run.
- 44:14You have a great relationship. You're going in separate
- 44:16directions. You still love and respect each
- 44:18other so much. You'll probably stay in touch but it's
- 44:20never going to happen again and you have a beautiful
- 44:22kiss outside the
- 44:24airport and then you never see each other again.
- 44:26Wonderful. You don't ever want to see that person.
- 44:28You don't want to see it again. You don't want
- 44:30to ever meet up with them again. You want to have that
- 44:32preserved moment. That's the perfect thing.
- 44:34You rarely get those things in life. We had
- 44:36that with LeBron and stuff.
- 44:38I think he's going
- 44:40to Cleveland so I'm good.
- 44:42I just want it
- 44:44on the record that I would prefer
- 44:46Miami. Cleveland of course
- 44:48is the better story
- 44:50but is it the best better story
- 44:52if you have to go drag those
- 44:54two playoff chokers?
- 44:56It's not the better story.
- 44:58I'm not going to lie to you.
- 45:00I think there's a lot of fun stories here. I would love
- 45:02to see him in Minnesota. I don't think
- 45:04it's going to happen. You know that's my fucking
- 45:06dream. I don't think it's going to happen.
- 45:08I put that at the lowest of the odds.
- 45:10LeBron with his two children. Ant and
- 45:12LaMelo.
- 45:14I also wouldn't mind seeing them in Philly
- 45:16right now because Philly just kind of...
- 45:18They're up to 5-7%.
- 45:20They weren't even on anyone's radar until the
- 45:22Jalen Brown time. By the way, is Philly all of a
- 45:24sudden the best team in the East?
- 45:26Doesn't it always
- 45:28depend on Embiid? I know but Jalen Brown's
- 45:30there. He fucking carried the Celtics last
- 45:32year and now you're putting him with Terry Smacksie.
- 45:34DJ Edgecombe and yeah.
- 45:36Is Philly legitimately now the best team in the East?
- 45:38It's going to depend on how they all play together
- 45:40but absolutely
- 45:42there's a chance. I
- 45:44imagine that the Knicks are just going to have...
- 45:46They've already lost a couple of pieces.
- 45:48I think they're going to take a step back.
- 45:50Not a huge step back but
- 45:52a mild one. I think they'll still
- 45:54finish third in the East and we'll see what happens.
- 45:56They'll finish third in the East
- 45:58but I'm interested to see what they can do in the playoffs.
- 46:00I think the Celtics are going to be worse than the Sixers at this point.
- 46:02Man, I'm sorry this is happening.
- 46:04Well, you know, I've been all over the internet
- 46:06griping about it. I'm tired now.
- 46:08Well, let's get back to the funness
- 46:10of the racism
- 46:12in sports.
- 46:14Like coughing and yawning. I swear guys, I'm into this.
- 46:16Alright, alright. Let's get to more good
- 46:18old-fashioned American racism.
- 46:20I want to talk to you about this because I've
- 46:22been waiting to talk to you about this.
- 46:24You and I have not been able to. We haven't had a show in a minute.
- 46:28For those who don't
- 46:30haven't been paying attention,
- 46:32Cade Cavalli,
- 46:34pitcher for the Nationals,
- 46:36had an incident with
- 46:38Red Sox's Wilson Contreras.
- 46:40By the way, Wilson Contreras has a lot
- 46:42of incidents.
- 46:44This one wasn't his fault.
- 46:46No, he is
- 46:48an antagonizer.
- 46:50He didn't do this though.
- 46:52He is a person who gets people riled up.
- 46:56Our first spill
- 46:58in the history of the podcast.
- 47:00There's only a matter of time. Continue.
- 47:02He gets people riled up. We know this about him.
- 47:04He's always been somebody
- 47:06who kind of gets
- 47:08under people's skin on purpose. However,
- 47:10in this situation,
- 47:12it was not his fault.
- 47:16If you don't know about it,
- 47:18I don't know. Do I say what he said?
- 47:22Yeah, I think.
- 47:24Listen, you can hear it very clearly
- 47:26on the video. I'll say it because I'm
- 47:28not even comfortable with it either, but here's what he
- 47:30said. It was strike three
- 47:32and he immediately shouted out to him.
- 47:34I mean, looked him dead in the face.
- 47:36Sit down, boy.
- 47:38This is a white Oklahoma
- 47:40pitcher. I don't think I need to
- 47:42fucking tell any of you
- 47:44the outrageous connotation of
- 47:46what he said before that campus from and not to mention
- 47:48how he said it and how quickly
- 47:50he said it as if he had this more
- 47:52than planned that he was going to say
- 47:54this. And
- 47:56I just don't understand how people
- 47:58can say something that has outrageous
- 48:00racist, racial tones and
- 48:02connotations and an outrageous
- 48:04amount of, I don't know, hundreds of years of history
- 48:06and then just claim
- 48:08to be ignorant that you have no idea
- 48:10what this is. He claimed that he had no idea
- 48:12that if he had no, you don't need to be
- 48:14lying sack of shit. You could say
- 48:16you truly didn't mean it that way.
- 48:18And I know there's nothing you could
- 48:20say that I can almost
- 48:22hear that even though I don't fucking buy it. A second.
- 48:24There's nothing but telling me
- 48:26that you don't know this.
- 48:28You're from fucking Oklahoma. Yes, you
- 48:30fucking do fucking knock
- 48:32that shit off. Sometimes I really wish
- 48:34to stop it like I really
- 48:36do the only way that it wouldn't have
- 48:38the real honest answer
- 48:40is very likely. It's just not
- 48:42going to stop. It's coming for me.
- 48:44Could you?
- 48:46Well, listen, I mean,
- 48:48I can't believe this hasn't happened.
- 48:50I'm actually shocked. Yeah.
- 48:52I guess the thing is
- 48:54like the only thing you can say at that moment is
- 48:56like I'm realizing that there's a
- 48:58lot of like racist
- 49:00verbiage that I grew up around
- 49:02that is still in my like it's still
- 49:04in my lexicon and I still have a lot
- 49:06of unpacking to do. That's the only
- 49:08answer that needs like otherwise
- 49:10you're just lying. You're a white
- 49:12good old boy from Oklahoma
- 49:14playing baseball, which is
- 49:16extremely racist to begin with.
- 49:18And that phrase is just
- 49:20is what it is. Hold on. Let's put a quick pause.
- 49:22Mocha's getting on camera.
- 49:24Hey Mocha
- 49:26say hi to the people.
- 49:28You're almost on camera.
- 49:30There he is. There's our handsome
- 49:32Mocha. I can't believe you guys just saw
- 49:34Mocha because Cody spilled his wine.
- 49:36I mean, I wish there was a better reason to put him on.
- 49:38We're making him do chores.
- 49:40He is earning his money today.
- 49:42Poor Mocha. This is what happens
- 49:44when we take a week and a half off.
- 49:46Yeah, we all get kind of out of
- 49:48sync a little bit. Thank you Mocha. You're the best.
- 49:50I'll clean the rest later, man. I appreciate
- 49:52your help. By the way, Mocha's
- 49:54been on the ones and twos on this show from the
- 49:56very get go, so I can't stress how much we love Mocha.
- 49:58It's very important that we have Mocha here.
- 50:00Like it's really, we tried to do it
- 50:02one time without him and it was so
- 50:04fucking annoying. It was a struggle bus.
- 50:06I'm like, I really wish Mocha was here.
- 50:08But that being said,
- 50:10this was a racist thing. It was a white pitcher
- 50:12saying a racist thing. It is what it is.
- 50:14Can I tell you something shocking?
- 50:16I did not see
- 50:18a ton.
- 50:20There was obviously plenty of racism.
- 50:22Sure, of course.
- 50:24You might be surprised. It's
- 50:26less than you think. I saw
- 50:28less than you think. Now I saw
- 50:30an outrageous amount of ignorance.
- 50:32Outrageous. I would say
- 50:34of the things that I saw
- 50:36mostly, I would say
- 50:38of the things that people were racist
- 50:40against, I would say
- 50:42not kidding, homophobia
- 50:44was at the top of the list.
- 50:46They were racist against homophobia?
- 50:48No, they were incredibly homophobic. I would say they'd start
- 50:50there. Then I'd say
- 50:52antisemitic was there and
- 50:54racism was right about the same
- 50:56of not just above antisemitism.
- 50:58Well, I will
- 51:00say this as thoughtfully as I can.
- 51:02I think that there are times
- 51:04where you're not noticing racist
- 51:06microaggressions that
- 51:08aren't aimed at you because you're not trained
- 51:10to see them. There's probably
- 51:12a lot more racism going on than you're necessarily
- 51:14seeing. That being said, I was a little more
- 51:16aware because I dealt with an outrageous amount
- 51:18of antisemitism.
- 51:20That's what I'm saying. You probably
- 51:22were noticing that stuff because you know
- 51:24what to look for more than you would.
- 51:26There are so many things that I've learned.
- 51:28The more I'm in community with
- 51:30Black people, my Black friends, Black
- 51:32colleagues, Black co-workers, I have been like,
- 51:34oh, fuck.
- 51:36You don't know it unless you're spending a lot of time
- 51:38with people having dialogues about this. I think that
- 51:40there's a lot of stuff going on that we don't
- 51:42even notice until we notice it. Then we realize
- 51:44it's happening all around us.
- 51:46That could be a part of it as well. You are
- 51:48about as well-meaning
- 51:50and
- 51:52caring about these and open-minded
- 51:54as you could possibly be.
- 51:56You and I have blind
- 51:58spots that we simply cannot overcome
- 52:00in a lot of these spaces. A part of this honestly
- 52:02might also be this.
- 52:04I hate to say it this way, but there weren't
- 52:06an outrageous amount of African-Americans
- 52:08playing with me during my time.
- 52:10The racism I saw was mostly towards
- 52:12the Latin players.
- 52:14A lot of the Black players
- 52:16are Dominican-American
- 52:18from South America. Make no mistake,
- 52:20they deal with a lot of it.
- 52:22A lot of it. 100%. They do have a different
- 52:24relationship to not only discussing it
- 52:26but even
- 52:28sometimes recognizing it. Those
- 52:30are nuances among the diaspora
- 52:32that are not for us to necessarily
- 52:34break down, but there absolutely is
- 52:36a dynamic that exists.
- 52:38My question for you
- 52:40is,
- 52:42they reduced Cade Cavalli's
- 52:44suspension for this whole incident to
- 52:46five games. Wilson Contreras
- 52:48currently is still serving his seven-game suspension.
- 52:50It's under appeal.
- 52:52We'll see. I guess we can't say what's going
- 52:54to happen. Well, his is still
- 52:56seven because he did throw a helmet at him.
- 53:00So, first of all, funny thing about
- 53:02that, there was a
- 53:04headline on ESPN after—did you see this?
- 53:06I did not. After this whole incident
- 53:08where they were like,
- 53:10this
- 53:12headline essentially read,
- 53:14like, Scrum Breaks Out
- 53:16After Wilson Contreras Throws
- 53:18Helmet at Cade Cavalli.
- 53:20One more time? That's what
- 53:22it said? Yes. On what network?
- 53:24ESPN. Boy, I have—for what
- 53:26little respect I have for that network,
- 53:28it's now officially all gone.
- 53:30I had no respect for them already,
- 53:32but Jesus Christ. It was like full-on
- 53:34lies. Jesus Christ. Like a full-on lie.
- 53:36That is such a blatant lie
- 53:38I don't know what to do with myself. Did he throw
- 53:40a helmet? Yes. Not
- 53:42the headline. Not the headline, and definitely
- 53:44wasn't how the scrum broke out. He was
- 53:46in a scrum by the time the helmet was thrown
- 53:48because Cavalli had been racist.
- 53:50They were both suspended.
- 53:52I'm not a big fan of suspending
- 53:54somebody for reacting to racism.
- 53:56Yes, there is a rule that you
- 53:58don't throw your helmet at somebody. There's also a rule
- 54:00against being racist, right?
- 54:02You also can't be racist.
- 54:04We're sort of in a pickle
- 54:06there where you get to decide.
- 54:08This is
- 54:10very much feeling like
- 54:12Miles Garrett swinging his helmet
- 54:14at—who was it? Mason Rudolph?
- 54:16Yeah, but here's the difference.
- 54:18It was way more dangerous. It was more dangerous,
- 54:20but here's also the difference on that.
- 54:22We didn't have very
- 54:24obvious audio
- 54:26sound of what Mason Rudolph
- 54:28did or did not say. We only had to go off of believing
- 54:30that, which believe all Miles
- 54:32Garrett. Yes, I believe Miles Garrett.
- 54:34That being said, we didn't have
- 54:36the outrageously clear
- 54:38as a goddamn bell sound
- 54:40that Cade Cavalli was so
- 54:42kind to give us. It sounded like it came
- 54:44out of a
- 54:46movie, like a movie
- 54:48about a racist Southerner. This
- 54:50honestly sounded like a scene
- 54:52from the movie Fucking 42.
- 54:54This was a scene—and I
- 54:56do mean this—the first 45
- 54:58minutes of 42.
- 55:00So I can't stress this enough.
- 55:02Can't believe the suspension was
- 55:04reduced. I'm
- 55:06baffled, baffled that
- 55:08his thing is, I had no idea. Just for that
- 55:10sense alone, I would have doubled your fucking
- 55:12dumbass suspension. You are a dumb fuck
- 55:14if you didn't know. You're either this, a racist
- 55:16asshole, or the dumbest fuck I've ever
- 55:18seen in my life. Either way, you should be suspended
- 55:20more games. It is what
- 55:22it is, and it drives me nuts. I think that
- 55:24we should all get to vote, and if
- 55:26America decides that what you said was racist,
- 55:30he gets to throw a helmet at you.
- 55:32Point my cringe
- 55:34from it. I'm sorry. I'm so
- 55:36fucking over these dudes. I'm so
- 55:38over it. I just—
- 55:40well, technically you can't throw
- 55:42a helmet at someone. I mean, it is assault.
- 55:44Yeah, and so is
- 55:46hate speech. Like, neither of these things are
- 55:48legal things to do. I didn't say one
- 55:50was better or worse than the other.
- 55:52I know what's better. I know what's better
- 55:54too, but you—you can't throw
- 55:56a helmet at a guy. You can.
- 55:58I mean, you can, physically. Also, like, to your point,
- 56:00he's—like,
- 56:02the helmet was
- 56:04tossed at, like, in a—it's not like
- 56:06he point-blank ranged—Miles
- 56:08Garretted him. It's like, we're acting like he—
- 56:10You're not wrong. Like, he took a, like, shotgun
- 56:12to his head. No, no, no, no, I'm not saying
- 56:14that. You're not wrong. He tossed
- 56:16it into a crowd. Listen. He was more—
- 56:18more than anything, he was angrily throwing
- 56:20his helmet than he was even targeting
- 56:22it. Like, he was like,
- 56:24fuck this. Listen.
- 56:26The whole situation is fucked.
- 56:28Team instigating
- 56:30Wilson Contreras. I love—
- 56:32I love a petty bitch who gets
- 56:34under people's skin. I don't like when getting
- 56:36under people's skin results in
- 56:38racism, especially when they've—that's a one
- 56:40instance where they haven't done anything.
- 56:42You know, that was just bizarre.
- 56:44He swung through a pitch. He's walking back. Here's
- 56:46the thing. Turns out, what?
- 56:48Because even I was just like, what?
- 56:50Even the sit-down, honestly, like, in
- 56:52that moment, it was, like, wildly
- 56:54unsportsmanlike. There was no need
- 56:56for it. Like, this was not a—this
- 56:58was not a Bautista backflip.
- 57:00Like, everybody needs to fucking chill.
- 57:02Yeah, unreal.
- 57:04Anyways,
- 57:06don't say that to someone.
- 57:08So, Headlines was basically
- 57:10Racism Corner plus LeBron.
- 57:12Yeah. So, thank you, LeBron.
- 57:14Yeah.
- 57:16We have to go back
- 57:18in Media Corner. We must return
- 57:20to the United States
- 57:22and perhaps the
- 57:24most frustrating and
- 57:26maybe depressing
- 57:28conversation to have is the one
- 57:30happening in the media right now around Christian Pulisic
- 57:32and how he
- 57:34not only showed up in this tournament, but how he
- 57:36played in the most important game they've
- 57:38played in the last 12 years.
- 57:40I would say didn't show up in the tournament and
- 57:42barely played.
- 57:44Game one? Game one? Pulisic?
- 57:46For the first half, yes. Oh, man. I was
- 57:48pumped. He got hurt, right? He got hurt. But before he got hurt,
- 57:50man, I was like, finally.
- 57:52We got tournament Pulisic.
- 57:54This is the guy he was
- 57:56always meant to be.
- 57:58The backlash
- 58:00from fans, but
- 58:02specifically in the media, which I find fascinating
- 58:04because the USMNT
- 58:06has always been the ugly
- 58:08duckling, little
- 58:10stepchild to the USWNT.
- 58:12The women in this sport have dominated
- 58:14it. They have been the standard, the gold
- 58:16standard, quite literally,
- 58:18for World Cup golds,
- 58:20Olympic golds. They are
- 58:22the best women's team in the world.
- 58:24And what's amazing is the same people that celebrated
- 58:26our president returning the
- 58:28red card hates that team.
- 58:30Sure, of course, naturally. Fascinating, isn't it?
- 58:32But they're
- 58:34getting the royal
- 58:36treatment here. They're getting the mainstream
- 58:38media royal treatment.
- 58:40This is what happens when you're
- 58:42primetime and fuck up. Amen.
- 58:44We made it.
- 58:46We finally made it. Our soccer team made it.
- 58:50I want to start with Nick Wright ripping
- 58:52Christian Pulisic because I think this is
- 58:54an encapsulation.
- 58:56Both him and Sidney LaRue
- 58:58sort of have
- 59:00said what I have been thinking
- 59:02about this whole situation.
- 59:04He said, yeah, I mean,
- 59:06oh, sorry. I just want to go over what
- 59:08Christian, this is all he said after the game.
- 59:10I mean, I just twisted my ankle and just
- 59:12sprained my ankle. I mean, it's just frustrating to
- 59:14end like that, of course, but you know,
- 59:16now I have time to rest,
- 59:18so hopefully it'll be okay.
- 59:20Hey, guess what we don't give a fuck about,
- 59:22Pulisic? Your time
- 59:24to rest. Sidney LaRue reposted
- 59:26that and said, you've rested the entire
- 59:28tournament. Sidney LaRue, by the way,
- 59:30champion, very famous women's player.
- 59:32That was the extent of Pulisic's accounting
- 59:34for the exit that ended his tournament.
- 59:36Here's what Nick Wright said. It seems
- 59:38like it might be more pain tolerance than
- 59:40long-term injury concern and it's the World Cup
- 59:42and I would like for the guy who's
- 59:44supposed to change American soccer to be able to
- 59:46fight through it, but we got away with
- 59:48it in the Australia game. It was fine and he
- 59:50was rearing and ready to go. This one, there's
- 59:52no confusion about it. We saw what happened.
- 59:54We saw him suffer the injury. He kicked the guy,
- 59:56which I would put akin to, you know,
- 59:58in hazards of the job, being a garbage man
- 1:00:00and having stuff splash on you.
- 1:00:02It's unfortunate, but it probably happens
- 1:00:04more often than you'd like and for that to be
- 1:00:06as debilitating as it was to the point
- 1:00:08where he could not be involved in the
- 1:00:10play for the next four or five minutes, we
- 1:00:12allow a goal and he begs out of the biggest game
- 1:00:14of his life is unacceptable.
- 1:00:16And to add to that, before I move
- 1:00:18on to what Landon Donovan said,
- 1:00:20you have two choices
- 1:00:22in that moment after Landon Donovan goes down. By the way,
- 1:00:24his team had full possession in that moment
- 1:00:26and he would not get up, which means
- 1:00:28they could not make a play. They had
- 1:00:30full possession and an opportunity to make a
- 1:00:32potentially goal scoring
- 1:00:34moment and he laid there. And then
- 1:00:36when he did get back up, he limped
- 1:00:38around the field rather than taking himself off.
- 1:00:40He could have immediately been like, you got to get me off.
- 1:00:42We have to stay in this. As a leader,
- 1:00:44that's what he should have done. Instead, he limped around
- 1:00:46like a little fuck and did not come
- 1:00:48off the field. And then we
- 1:00:50gave up one of the worst goals I've ever
- 1:00:52seen scored in the history of soccer.
- 1:00:54Landon Donovan said, this is what it means
- 1:00:56to represent your country. And if you don't want to take
- 1:00:58this as a professional soccer player, as someone who gets the
- 1:01:00opportunity to wear that jersey and take it seriously and
- 1:01:02responsibly, then don't come in. He's tired.
- 1:01:04He's out there grinding, hurt himself in the
- 1:01:06process, and I can't help but think that our guys
- 1:01:08on vacation, not wanting to play in the
- 1:01:10Gold Cup. It's pissing me off.
- 1:01:12Listen, I watched
- 1:01:14it too. I think
- 1:01:16we can all agree now.
- 1:01:18It's against the guy. Polisic is
- 1:01:20not only not the guy. He's not the guy.
- 1:01:22But we've got... I wanted
- 1:01:24him to be the guy. We all wanted it.
- 1:01:26We wanted it more than reality
- 1:01:28actually was. All the best soccer players
- 1:01:30that have come out of this country, men
- 1:01:32and women, are looking at this guy
- 1:01:34like, yeah, no. We're out. Yeah, no.
- 1:01:36He's not the guy. And that,
- 1:01:38I think that's... It sucked. I think that's
- 1:01:40the most frustrating part for me is that...
- 1:01:42That quote is so fucking soft. I don't
- 1:01:44know what to do. Like, to actually
- 1:01:46say after that game, now I can get some rest
- 1:01:48is just... Who gives a fuck about your
- 1:01:50rest right now? The most outrageously
- 1:01:52tone deaf... Like, did you think we
- 1:01:54were going to feel bad for you? Man,
- 1:01:56come on, dude. You gotta
- 1:01:58read the room. You
- 1:02:00gotta... If
- 1:02:02only he just fell on the sword.
- 1:02:04Sprained my ankle.
- 1:02:06I had to get out of there. I should've gotten out of there
- 1:02:08faster. Just, goddammit.
- 1:02:10What is
- 1:02:12this fucking answer you gave?
- 1:02:14It's just so selfish
- 1:02:16and tone deaf and stupid.
- 1:02:18That's an indication
- 1:02:20of what was in your
- 1:02:22head while you were out there. And I
- 1:02:24kind of like that Nick Wright was like,
- 1:02:26can you play soft? Like, does everything
- 1:02:28that touches you hurt you? Like, is this not
- 1:02:30something you can ever fucking play through?
- 1:02:32I agree with Nick Wright a lot. He's not wrong.
- 1:02:34I actually agree more with Landon Donovan.
- 1:02:36I mean, I agree with Landon Donovan 100%.
- 1:02:38It's the vacation comment that I agree with
- 1:02:40most. Because you just say, now I have a
- 1:02:42break to get healthy. And he was used to playing the Gold Cup.
- 1:02:44All this motherfucker does is rest.
- 1:02:46All he does is rest and not show up.
- 1:02:48Meanwhile... Last World Cup. Remember
- 1:02:50he even fucking got hurt last World Cup.
- 1:02:52He's always fucking hurt.
- 1:02:54No, but don't worry. He makes sure he plays
- 1:02:56just enough to get his contracts
- 1:02:58in whatever league he's playing in.
- 1:03:00Sidney LeRoux wrote, honestly,
- 1:03:02I don't care if they lost. I care that I
- 1:03:04watched the biggest moment of their lives disappear
- 1:03:06and never saw the desperation to save it.
- 1:03:08You spent your entire life getting to that
- 1:03:10field. Every sacrifice was for this.
- 1:03:12And when it starts slipping away, you fucking
- 1:03:14fight. You make them rip the dream
- 1:03:16out of your hands. I will never understand
- 1:03:18having anything left to give
- 1:03:20when it's over. And
- 1:03:22I thought about how Tim Howard talked
- 1:03:24about putting on the United States
- 1:03:26jersey. And he was like, every single time
- 1:03:28I went out and played for the United States,
- 1:03:30that was the biggest game of my life.
- 1:03:32That was the most important, most honored
- 1:03:34moment of my career. That was what I
- 1:03:36played soccer for, was to put that
- 1:03:38jersey on and play in those moments.
- 1:03:40That was like the best part of my
- 1:03:42career and the thing I'm most proud
- 1:03:44of. Clearly, that's how
- 1:03:46the women feel about it.
- 1:03:48And that is just simply
- 1:03:50not what we saw from the
- 1:03:52US men's national team across the board.
- 1:03:54I don't think that every
- 1:03:56player was not trying to show
- 1:03:58up. I actually think Balagoon played really
- 1:04:00well. There was no one setting him up, but he was
- 1:04:02everywhere he was supposed to be for so long
- 1:04:04until it became lost.
- 1:04:06Kenny didn't look great. I mean, the guys that have been
- 1:04:08told us that
- 1:04:10are the future of the team have not looked great. And now
- 1:04:12the media is looking at you
- 1:04:14and saying, oh,
- 1:04:16you just had a chance
- 1:04:18to get all of us to give a fuck.
- 1:04:20All you had to do was show up and fight
- 1:04:22Mexico.
- 1:04:24All you had to do was show up
- 1:04:26and fight and die out there.
- 1:04:28Cabo Verde might have won the fucking
- 1:04:30game. In our minds,
- 1:04:32they won the game. They truly did. They're on
- 1:04:34the map now. They're real. You literally
- 1:04:36didn't have to win.
- 1:04:38You didn't have to win. And it's almost like
- 1:04:40they thought, as soon as they were losing the
- 1:04:42game, it was like they lost. They gave up.
- 1:04:44Any sense of pride.
- 1:04:46Not to mention that Lukaku fucking goal
- 1:04:48with three minutes.
- 1:04:50Lukaku is a fucking dagger too.
- 1:04:52Every time he comes in, he's going to score.
- 1:04:54As soon as he came in, he was going to score. But right when I saw that happen,
- 1:04:56I was just like, just for the love of God, at least leave it here.
- 1:04:58When Lukaku got that goal, I was just like, you know what?
- 1:05:00Fuck this team. I am so
- 1:05:02glad that I put in this effort for these guys.
- 1:05:04It almost was like they didn't believe in
- 1:05:06the fans and the country
- 1:05:08to care
- 1:05:10that they fought. It was like, well,
- 1:05:12we're not going to win, so who cares? And it's like, no, we
- 1:05:14actually care. I promise you, if we
- 1:05:16had seen a team doing
- 1:05:18what Mexico did, doing what Cabo Verde did, that
- 1:05:20we would have felt so
- 1:05:22much better. And
- 1:05:24this is the one thing I like about our
- 1:05:26sports media in these moments, especially when
- 1:05:28people become initiated into it,
- 1:05:30it's like, you
- 1:05:32simply are not going to get away with this bullshit.
- 1:05:34We have no fucking time for you.
- 1:05:36We're trying to put
- 1:05:38men's soccer on the map here. We're trying to put
- 1:05:40the entire sport on the map here.
- 1:05:44The women are the ones who had to fight to get paid?
- 1:05:46Dude. Up until
- 1:05:48four years ago, the women had to fight to get
- 1:05:50paid as much as the men. And these are the fucking idiots
- 1:05:52who we've rolled out.
- 1:05:54And not all of them, but
- 1:05:56Pulisic is a fucking joke.
- 1:05:58I don't
- 1:06:00feel this way very often about players,
- 1:06:02and I've given him the benefit of the doubt time and time
- 1:06:04and time again. If he never puts on a Team
- 1:06:06USA jersey again, I'll be fucking fine.
- 1:06:08I'll be fine. I'm over it.
- 1:06:10I'm completely done with it. And as somebody
- 1:06:12in the media, I don't have fun watching him. I don't
- 1:06:14have fun covering him. He does absolutely nothing for
- 1:06:16me. Because it's the same fucking story.
- 1:06:18He's fucking hurt, or he isn't
- 1:06:20hurt, or whatever, and he's not going to go out there. And now
- 1:06:22the fucking one time, the one
- 1:06:24time we truly needed him, he
- 1:06:26was a fucking no-show. I don't
- 1:06:28trust you anymore. I'm done. Did you see what Flo
- 1:06:30Belligan did after the game? Dude, wonderful.
- 1:06:32Went over and hugged the manager
- 1:06:34of Belgium. Spoke to him.
- 1:06:36Rudy Garcia gave a great quote
- 1:06:38about it, saying, I made it abundantly clear.
- 1:06:40Not mad at you. None of this was your fault.
- 1:06:42I appreciate this kid. Extremely
- 1:06:44classy. Watching him go and hug every Belgian
- 1:06:46player. I mean, Belligan
- 1:06:48is now officially my
- 1:06:50favorite person in sports. For
- 1:06:52him to have the presence of mind
- 1:06:54and the comfort
- 1:06:56and the confidence
- 1:06:58to go over there. The class
- 1:07:00to go over there. He is the best of America,
- 1:07:02by the way. Yeah. Like a truly,
- 1:07:04genuinely important moment. And
- 1:07:06I think something that might
- 1:07:08have, you know, unfortunately
- 1:07:10been a saver,
- 1:07:12like a career saver, in
- 1:07:14terms of the way people talk about him moving
- 1:07:16forward. Because that Belgium team,
- 1:07:18you know, for better or worse, was pissed.
- 1:07:20And he took, obviously, they beat
- 1:07:22their asses. Great. That's karma.
- 1:07:24And then also, he
- 1:07:26did the most. He was the leader.
- 1:07:28This guy, Belligan
- 1:07:30is a kid. He was a leader.
- 1:07:32He had the presence and the integrity in that
- 1:07:34moment to do that. He's 100%
- 1:07:36the future of everything. And we could lose him
- 1:07:38to England. No, we are
- 1:07:40going to lose him to England. That's the scary part.
- 1:07:42It's like, we had
- 1:07:44one chance to keep
- 1:07:46him and to
- 1:07:48show him how much we love and respect him.
- 1:07:50Trump
- 1:07:52stuck his fucking
- 1:07:54orange fist into the whole thing.
- 1:07:56American fans,
- 1:07:58there was a large segment that reacted
- 1:08:00really poorly to it. And now, we might
- 1:08:02lose the best player we
- 1:08:04have had in a generation since Tim
- 1:08:06Howard to England.
- 1:08:08And that breaks my heart because I
- 1:08:10love him
- 1:08:12the way that everybody's wanted me to love every
- 1:08:14other player. I mean,
- 1:08:16they wanted me to love Landon
- 1:08:18like this. They wanted me to love Clint like this.
- 1:08:20And I love Landon and Clint, but I don't like
- 1:08:22this kid, man. This kid's got it. And
- 1:08:24I wish him the very best when he eventually
- 1:08:26goes over to England because he's not going to play
- 1:08:28for us again.
- 1:08:30I love them. How he handled himself throughout
- 1:08:32the entire process. The quote he gave after
- 1:08:34the red card made me go like,
- 1:08:36this guy's it. This guy.
- 1:08:38How he talked about how he needed to come off the field
- 1:08:40with class and with respect
- 1:08:42to the refs even though he disagreed. He needed
- 1:08:44to make sure because other kids are seeing this.
- 1:08:46Holy shit. This guy's perfect. I can't believe he's
- 1:08:48this guy's our fucking captain. He's fucking
- 1:08:5020. I would I would fight with
- 1:08:52everything I had to keep him on that. Please
- 1:08:54come back. And I don't even know if we're keeping
- 1:08:56Pochettino. We're definitely not keeping
- 1:08:58so it's like the whole thing.
- 1:09:00Pochettino's going to fucking sign a fucking five
- 1:09:02year deal with somebody and it's going to be
- 1:09:04he didn't exactly coaches. He should not
- 1:09:06have started Matt Fries, man. Hey, man, listen,
- 1:09:08the best kick we had yesterday
- 1:09:10was when he fucking kicked those water bottles
- 1:09:12after that second goal. He was that was the
- 1:09:14best kick I saw from an American. I said to Chris,
- 1:09:16I was like, that's a bad sign. And he goes, no, he's
- 1:09:18finally showing fight. And I was like, no,
- 1:09:20he's that's the
- 1:09:22I know the difference between a like, let's fucking
- 1:09:24go kick. And I like I'm losing control
- 1:09:26of my faculty's kick, by the way,
- 1:09:28just for the record, you know, Tillman
- 1:09:30was very ineffective.
- 1:09:32But my God on free
- 1:09:34kicks, this guy is a we have David
- 1:09:36Beckham. He's David. He
- 1:09:38is on fucking real. I couldn't.
- 1:09:40So when that happened, I was like, oh, we're in
- 1:09:42this like I felt the better than
- 1:09:44I had a great for a minute.
- 1:09:46I felt
- 1:09:48serious pride and like we're
- 1:09:50doing this. And then a minute and a half
- 1:09:52later, it was awful.
- 1:09:54We had a good tour.
- 1:09:56But his free kicks Robinson is
- 1:09:58like a fucking G. I'm
- 1:10:00you will never get me to get to
- 1:10:02hate. I think Anthony Robinson, I think we
- 1:10:04come in. I did not think that
- 1:10:06that, you know, some of
- 1:10:08the other players who shut up all tournament yesterday, I thought
- 1:10:10had rough days. It's
- 1:10:12time for Tim Rheem to move on
- 1:10:14a captain, a legend.
- 1:10:16I love Tim Rheem, but he was
- 1:10:18just not. So
- 1:10:20you know, whatever. But I'm glad you shouted out
- 1:10:22Malik Tillman because he
- 1:10:24I can't. That's
- 1:10:26a messy David Beckham shit like we don't
- 1:10:28have players who do that. You
- 1:10:30know, I've been watching men's soccer, this
- 1:10:32goddamn team. I hope we've never had a player
- 1:10:34by the way that wasn't even this tournament
- 1:10:36that happened twice in a tournament was fucking
- 1:10:38I looked like I was like, is
- 1:10:40this real? Like this is a thing we have
- 1:10:42like crazy
- 1:10:44unreal, like really fucking
- 1:10:46unreal. Yeah. That being said,
- 1:10:48I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do in the future. That
- 1:10:50being I felt like I said the same thing last tournament
- 1:10:52too, but this one I was
- 1:10:54really into. I hope us can get it together
- 1:10:56for the next go around. But I also said this
- 1:10:58I my
- 1:11:00my hope is there.
- 1:11:02My expectation is not
- 1:11:04and that's because we just don't have a system
- 1:11:06in place to fucking do this. I we just don't
- 1:11:082028 women
- 1:11:10you in? I'll be in
- 1:11:12you in? I'll be in. Okay, you know, I'll be
- 1:11:14I'm usually into the women, but I'm like
- 1:11:16this one really got me
- 1:11:18like this tournament. This whole tournament
- 1:11:20was here has really gotten me
- 1:11:22to the point where you your husband
- 1:11:24Chris and I are talking about fucking picking
- 1:11:26a La Liga team together. We're talking
- 1:11:28like getting into that shit. By the way, he's
- 1:11:30making he's doing a lot of research. I know he is and
- 1:11:32I'm waiting for him to present me the research and not only is
- 1:11:34he doing research and I'm also thinking about not picking his team
- 1:11:36on purpose so we can have a fucking rivalry.
- 1:11:38Although you might not want to do that because his plan
- 1:11:40currently is
- 1:11:42to pick a place that not only is cool
- 1:11:44and has like cool history that is into
- 1:11:46but that is a sick place to travel
- 1:11:48if we want to go to a game goddamn. Okay,
- 1:11:50keep keep up the research. Yeah,
- 1:11:52we're but that and also like
- 1:11:54I know you think this is lazy. Don't
- 1:11:56don't don't be mad at me. You have to understand
- 1:11:58there is a very specific reason. I'm going to be
- 1:12:00all in on man man man you
- 1:12:02I know they're lazy. It's a lazy
- 1:12:04no. No, I know. It's a lazy
- 1:12:06pick because they're basically historically
- 1:12:08Yankees. I get it, but
- 1:12:10well, not quite. I mean more
- 1:12:12historically, but like how I'm in more
- 1:12:14of the fandom not the championship nature. They
- 1:12:16were like, yeah, they were the first like Dallas
- 1:12:18Cowboys Americans play started
- 1:12:20and I I'm sorry that it's going to be that
- 1:12:22lazy, but my bar is O'Brien's
- 1:12:24Pub O'Brien's Pub is a Manchester
- 1:12:26United bar. I'm going
- 1:12:28to go with it's not exactly their their
- 1:12:30their heyday. I know it's not
- 1:12:32so I mean, so I I feel
- 1:12:34good about jumping in on a team
- 1:12:36that is not
- 1:12:38at the top tier. They're going
- 1:12:40to be good no matter what like they're never going to
- 1:12:42be at least not anytime soon
- 1:12:44but that's who I'm going to be rooting for
- 1:12:46because of my loyalty to
- 1:12:48my pub. That's fine. I'm going
- 1:12:50to go to O'Brien's and yell at you. I mean, I'm going to go to
- 1:12:52us Sonny's and yell at you from
- 1:12:54down the street. You're going to a worse bar.
- 1:12:56I like Sonny's I worked there.
- 1:12:58I like Sonny's it's bigger
- 1:13:00which I do appreciate
- 1:13:02Oh, yeah, it's a lot bigger.
- 1:13:04No, it is a lot bigger and
- 1:13:06it's like the the the setup
- 1:13:08is more like it's just the horseshoe which is
- 1:13:10a lot easier than not as much outdoor space
- 1:13:12though. There is there's a full back patio
- 1:13:14out there now. There's two back patios at O'Brien's
- 1:13:16Two, two is more than one.
- 1:13:18Yeah, that's right. No, I really like O'Brien's
- 1:13:20They're both good spots actually. I'm giving shit to
- 1:13:22Sonny's just because I used to work there.
- 1:13:24My end there wasn't great. And one's like
- 1:13:26one's Boston and one's
- 1:13:28one's Boston and one is New York. O'Brien's
- 1:13:30became the New York bar.
- 1:13:32Sonny McClain's has always been the
- 1:13:34home. Well, actually, I take that back. It used
- 1:13:36to be the home of Red Sox
- 1:13:38Nation West. So back in
- 1:13:402003 and 2004 whenever they would actually
- 1:13:42go to a quote unquote Boston bar,
- 1:13:44they weren't showing a bar in Boston. They were showing
- 1:13:46Sonny McClain's in Santa Monica, which
- 1:13:48was wild to me. I'm like, I would
- 1:13:50laugh when they would go to cut to cut
- 1:13:52like in between breaks like and look at
- 1:13:54the fans in Boston going crazy like that
- 1:13:56Sonny's Cody when I
- 1:13:58first moved here and I watched I watched
- 1:14:00the Red Sox win the World Series at
- 1:14:02Sonny McLean's in 2013.
- 1:14:04I was like, I've
- 1:14:06like I've watched the Red Sox
- 1:14:08win a World Series in Boston and it
- 1:14:10feels exactly the same. Yeah, no, no, it
- 1:14:12was fucking weird. Well, I'll tell you this where I was
- 1:14:14like, am I in the Twilight Zone? The old
- 1:14:16owner was a straight. Exactly. It's
- 1:14:18not the same owner. It's not. It's not the same anymore.
- 1:14:20But back then, I mean, it was like
- 1:14:22I might as well at the vibe
- 1:14:24felt like Boston. The bar looks like a bar
- 1:14:26from Boston and I was like, I feel and
- 1:14:28I had just moved here. It had been a matter of weeks
- 1:14:30and I was like, oh my
- 1:14:32God. Yeah. So yeah, legit.
- 1:14:34No, very you are. If any
- 1:14:36of the people watching are Boston fans
- 1:14:38and ever come to Los Angeles like it actually
- 1:14:40but it's still that good of a Boston
- 1:14:42spot. It's still a really fun
- 1:14:44place to watch a Boston sports game. Okay, good. I don't know
- 1:14:46what it would be like now in comparison
- 1:14:48to the heyday of when I will tell you the
- 1:14:50heyday because I was also in there
- 1:14:52during Lakers Celtics
- 1:14:54because I was working there at the time.
- 1:14:56Do you ever wait? Do you ever think about the fact that we
- 1:14:58definitely have been in the same place at the same time over the last
- 1:15:00probably probably were. We were probably fucking yelling
- 1:15:02at each other, but I was working there and I was the
- 1:15:04one I was the one Lakers. We were because
- 1:15:06like you were in New York and I know you were like
- 1:15:08like for a few years and then you were
- 1:15:10bopping around and in
- 1:15:12baseball, but you were in Los Angeles still a
- 1:15:14lot. You were doing stuff all
- 1:15:16around town. There's
- 1:15:18no way we didn't like we absolutely
- 1:15:20walk by each other at some probably
- 1:15:22all the time. It probably happened to shit
- 1:15:24to live in this goddamn town. We probably
- 1:15:26be on 26th all the time. You probably
- 1:15:28saw me all the time. I probably served you a beer
- 1:15:30at Sonny's or at
- 1:15:32South. If you ever came to South
- 1:15:34you probably came to my trivia nights
- 1:15:36and I don't remember I
- 1:15:38look different. Yeah, I looked
- 1:15:40better real quick before we go. I
- 1:15:42have to ask you this. How much do you know about Taylor Swift
- 1:15:44and Travis Kelsey's wedding? Not a ton
- 1:15:46other than they got married at Madison Square
- 1:15:48Garden and the
- 1:15:50the guest list was outrageous and they
- 1:15:52had to shut down a full city block for it.
- 1:15:54Yeah.
- 1:15:56Also, I don't think wedding should be like
- 1:15:58this. I my favorite
- 1:16:00thing about this has been like
- 1:16:02the Swifties on the internet being
- 1:16:04like she has to
- 1:16:06have it somewhere where they can't
- 1:16:08have paparazzi. It can't be
- 1:16:10outside. It has to be in Madison
- 1:16:12Square. I was like, hold on
- 1:16:14the privacy that she's
- 1:16:16looking for is going to be achieved.
- 1:16:18Most popular arena
- 1:16:20in the entire country. One of the
- 1:16:22most popular arenas in the world in the most
- 1:16:24crowded city in the United States. One of the
- 1:16:26most popular cities in the world in the
- 1:16:28middle of fucking Manhattan with
- 1:16:301100 celebrities. I'm getting
- 1:16:32married at the Roman Coliseum.
- 1:16:34Don't look. No one look
- 1:16:36at me. Stop looking
- 1:16:38guys. Stop looking
- 1:16:40like are you kidding me?
- 1:16:42That's the thing that's annoying me.
- 1:16:44Small weddings.
- 1:16:46I'm told small weddings
- 1:16:48are sick. I didn't have one. I had a
- 1:16:50small wedding at a big wedding and I
- 1:16:52don't. We had a 60
- 1:16:54like to 62 person destination
- 1:16:56wedding. Everybody
- 1:16:58flew in, stayed at the same hotel. We vacation
- 1:17:00together for days. Everybody became best
- 1:17:02friends, got drunk and that sounds
- 1:17:04so much better.
- 1:17:06And my wedding was badass. I'm sure it was
- 1:17:08the best part of my marriage. Really?
- 1:17:10It was actually the only good part. Where was it?
- 1:17:12It was in just outside of downtown
- 1:17:14L.A. There's this, it's actually a great venue.
- 1:17:16I can't remember the name of it, but it was a really
- 1:17:18really great venue. What type of venue was it?
- 1:17:20It was just this beautiful
- 1:17:22event space style? It was
- 1:17:24like a very unique event space. They also had their own
- 1:17:26catering company at this event space and it was
- 1:17:28just like on the edge of
- 1:17:30Koreatown. And I mean
- 1:17:32it was a truly stunning
- 1:17:34event space. Did it have views?
- 1:17:36No, no. It was like segmented
- 1:17:38rooms kind of. Oh, cool. And with a really
- 1:17:40big like multiple. Like vibey? Yeah, very vibey.
- 1:17:42A lot of multiple halls like in it.
- 1:17:44Not a huge place, but like
- 1:17:46I gotta say, it was really fucking cool.
- 1:17:48How many people were at this wedding? 200.
- 1:17:50Yeah, that's too big. That's too big.
- 1:17:52No, I couldn't agree more. Way too many people.
- 1:17:54I actually think, so we were just at a wedding with
- 1:17:56I think it was like we counted and it was probably
- 1:17:58just over 100 people. Also, I never should have gotten married.
- 1:18:00Well, there's
- 1:18:02there's that. Yeah, I really should have done that.
- 1:18:04There's that part of it. I regret that.
- 1:18:06Also, yeah, like the
- 1:18:08amount of people there for your cursed wedding. I also
- 1:18:10regret that. Horrifying.
- 1:18:12Very expensive. But also, yeah,
- 1:18:14I was just at a wedding with about 100 something people.
- 1:18:16It was like 110 maybe. Maybe slightly
- 1:18:18over 100. And it was
- 1:18:20it was like just the right
- 1:18:22size of like if you're gonna have this many people,
- 1:18:24I'm good with this. This is a good
- 1:18:26little amount. Yeah. Anything more
- 1:18:28than that and it's like there's no way all these people
- 1:18:30So 2,000 in Madison Square Garden is not for you?
- 1:18:32You're here to collect money at this
- 1:18:34point. There's no way anybody gives a
- 1:18:36that you're here. By the way, she
- 1:18:38didn't register, did she?
- 1:18:40Who? Taylor Swift.
- 1:18:42She's like, by the way, we're registered at
- 1:18:44Home Depot and Bed Bath & Beyond.
- 1:18:46Let us know what you got.
- 1:18:48The billionaire? Yeah. I hope she
- 1:18:50didn't send a register to anybody. I don't know
- 1:18:52what her and her 1,100 famous
- 1:18:54people guess. Every single person there
- 1:18:56was some high society person. I bet
- 1:18:58the gift bag was crazy.
- 1:19:00You know, I heard
- 1:19:02something. There was like weird leaks about her
- 1:19:04like vows or like the speeches that
- 1:19:06they were giving to each other at this party
- 1:19:08and like something about how she like wished
- 1:19:10that she had like known
- 1:19:12Travis in high school because he was
- 1:19:14like a loser with no friends
- 1:19:16or something. I was like, what
- 1:19:18are we? I hate this.
- 1:19:20Wasn't he a delinquent? That was more of his thing back then?
- 1:19:22He was a delinquent in college. I don't know
- 1:19:24about high school. He almost got kicked out of college.
- 1:19:26I do know that. I do know that. Thank God for his older brother.
- 1:19:28His older brother.
- 1:19:30He owes his older brother
- 1:19:32fucking everything.
- 1:19:34I will give
- 1:19:36Travis credit. No one knows that more than him.
- 1:19:38Like Travis is
- 1:19:40very loyal to Jason.
- 1:19:42He fucking better be.
- 1:19:44Your entire life
- 1:19:46exists because Jason
- 1:19:48Kelsey fucking saved you.
- 1:19:50Literally. And by the way, Jason Kelsey
- 1:19:52is going to be fucking like one of the
- 1:19:54greats. He's great. Yeah. He's fucking great.
- 1:19:56He's a hall of famer.
- 1:19:58As is Travis Kelsey.
- 1:20:00Both of them are hall of famers.
- 1:20:02Jason deserves his own wing for what he did.
- 1:20:04He's the reason
- 1:20:06that he should be
- 1:20:08the chief's dynasty. He should actually have a chief's ring.
- 1:20:10He really fucking should.
- 1:20:12He should send his ass a ring.
- 1:20:14They should retire Jason Kelsey's
- 1:20:16fucking jersey in Kansas
- 1:20:18City while they're at it. They really should.
- 1:20:20You know what? I think we just came
- 1:20:22up with something that will
- 1:20:24I think even Chiefs fans would agree with this shit.
- 1:20:26Eagles fans wouldn't though.
- 1:20:28They'll be a little upset about it, but you know what? Get the fuck over it.
- 1:20:30Everybody loves Jason Kelsey.
- 1:20:32That is true. That is what they did. That's why they fucking
- 1:20:34had an active judge in the vet.
- 1:20:36I still love that.
- 1:20:38I didn't say I didn't love it. I just said
- 1:20:40they needed it because of fucking
- 1:20:42drunk lunatics. All right, Tanya. Well,
- 1:20:44we did it again. Couldn't get...
- 1:20:46We even talked about the fucking Boston Red Sox
- 1:20:48and we couldn't even talk about the fucking bloody sock today.
- 1:20:50But you know why? Because of racism.
- 1:20:52No, it's mostly because fuck her chilling,
- 1:20:54but I don't want to end the show just yet. I just wanted
- 1:20:56to say make sure everybody like, share, and subscribe
- 1:20:58wherever you get your favorite podcast. Not
- 1:21:00to mention on top of that, on YouTube, make

- 1:21:30Follow me too because why
- 1:21:32not? Yeah, I mean, you might as well follow Cody.
- 1:21:34Like, he's lagging way behind on the social
- 1:21:36media presence behind and his
- 1:21:38confidence is waning.
- 1:21:40I do feel really bad. This is why he's avoiding
- 1:21:42having the bloody sock debate,
- 1:21:44I think, because... It is not why
- 1:21:46but there's a percentage.
- 1:21:48Well, either way,
- 1:21:50one thing I know we do agree on, regardless of where
- 1:21:52we land on the bloody sock, is that it's
- 1:21:54fuck you, Curt Chile. Oh, God.
- 1:21:56Curt Chile, fuck you.
- 1:22:18you
