- 0:00Hi, everybody, and welcome to our second Yukon of Women's Basketball Coaches show
- 0:04of the season, Bob Joyce with Gino Ram and now later we'll visit with
- 0:07Debbie Antonelli and we'll talk national women's college basketball as a lot has happened in
- 0:12the first week plus of the season, Coach one and one through your first
- 0:16two games, and I know you were very disappointed in a lot of areas
- 0:20after the loss to NC State. Great atmosphere, by the way, at
- 0:24Reynolds. They did a phenomenal job with that building making it smaller. But
- 0:28of the things that were disappointing, were there one or two areas that were
- 0:32really disappointing in your mind? Of the things that did not go well on
- 0:36Sunday, you know, what was totally disappointing, to be honest, was
- 0:48that after the initial you know, we got up nine, Yeah, something
- 0:58like that. We got up nine, and right from that point, for
- 1:07whatever reason, I still haven't been able to put my finger on it.
- 1:14Defensively, the breakdown started, the rebounding went away, and as a result,
- 1:23on the offensive end, it became a lot of standing around because we
- 1:32didn't get enough stops and didn't get enough rebounds. There was barely a semblance
- 1:38of a transition game, So it would be a lot easier question to answer
- 1:45if you said to me, are there are one or two things that really
- 1:48stood out that you liked? Yeah, that's what probably was so disappointed about.
- 1:55It was to come out of that game and not not have a lot
- 2:00to hold on to, except maybe Q's performance I thought was especially impressive given
- 2:10you know, her first row game in her career, you know, so
- 2:15other than that, there really wasn't a whole lot and so obviously we can
- 2:23get a lot better and we need to fast. But you know, anytime
- 2:30you score eighty two points here at Connecticut, you're supposed to win. That
- 2:34was extremely extremely disappointed. Do you know. There were a few points and
- 2:38during that stretch where you're up nine early, you had a chance that I
- 2:42think to extend the lead even a little more. There was a sequence I
- 2:45think a couple of open threes. I think a miss layup was in there
- 2:46as well. The NC State comes down. Sinaia Rivers obviously got hot,
- 2:52and her first four shots were those mid range pull ups. They weren't you
- 2:57know, they weren't drives of the bucket. And it just seemed one she
- 3:00got going, her teammates fed off of that, and off they win.
- 3:02Seemed that way. I mean some of the shots that she made or shots
- 3:07we are shots we want the other team to take. You know, you
- 3:10can't can't take away every single thing that a team does. So you know
- 3:16you're willing to give up those baseline twelve footers. You know those are not
- 3:21easy to make, and the kid made them. So you know, the
- 3:28response then is we we have to work a little bit harder to not let
- 3:34her. Not let a player like that than when they're in that mode handle
- 3:39the ball a lot. Don't let them catch the ball, and that I
- 3:47think started for them the confidence that they needed, because you're right, it
- 3:55could have very easily went from nine to seventeen. You know, and now
- 4:00all of a sudden, it's a completely different ball game. But you know
- 4:09it's a first row game. Team play, you know. I see State
- 4:14played great. Yeah, we didn't shoot the ball particularly well. We missed
- 4:18a lot of shots that you would think you normally make. One of the
- 4:27dangers of playing a lot of players that you have to you know, you
- 4:33have to really guard against is when you're when a lot of your young players
- 4:43are really really really young, you know, all freshmen in our case,
- 4:51it's difficult to sometimes have an offensive consistency about you. So that has to
- 4:59evolve, and that's only going to take some time, I think, right,
- 5:04And I know you were disappointed. I mean, usually if you're going
- 5:08to be successful, I mean, yes, eighty one points, but you
- 5:11didn't get any really much from Caroline, didn't get any much from Aubrey,
- 5:15and it took a while. I mean Ice too, her first true road
- 5:17game, but it took a while for a lead to get going too.
- 5:20And it's hard to win that way. Well, it's impossible to win that
- 5:25way. Eliah started off pretty well, you know, and then you know,
- 5:31she didn't score in the second and third quarters. I don't think she
- 5:34had a bucket in the second and third quarters, and then played more like
- 5:40Aliyah, and you know, the last four or five minutes of the game,
- 5:45page I thought, passed up a lot of open shots and forced a
- 5:49lot of shots and dribbled into bad situations. So I don't see anybody that
- 5:58that I think played particularly play particularly well in that game. And I think
- 6:08the only one who was true to themselves who did exactly what they do every
- 6:13day in practice. As I said, was cute. You know what you
- 6:17saw Q do in that game, That's what she does every day in our
- 6:19practice. Seems like she has a little moxiater she does, she does.
- 6:26She is one of those unique kids that come in as freshmen that's not worried.
- 6:31They're not worried about anything. They're not afraid of anything. They're not
- 6:35should I should I not? You know, people think that coaches put those
- 6:40limitations on players. Coaches only put coaches only put limitations on players who limit
- 6:45themselves. You know, you get a kid that has no fear, The
- 6:49kid has you know, just care free. I just want to play basketball,
- 6:57and I'm going to make five horrendous player and then I'm going to make
- 7:00five players that can win this, win us the game. And I ain't
- 7:02worried about it as opposed to you know, a kid who won't do anything
- 7:06because they're afraid to make a mistake. Right. You know morewith Gino on
- 7:11the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show presented by Wells Fargo. In a minute on Learfield,
