- 0:00Speaker 1: When does this end? May twenty seconds? I don't want
- 0:04Speaker 1: to tell you May twenty second. Far on, Thanks for
- 0:07Speaker 1: joining us. Know you're busy man, sir. How you been.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Good, buddy. I'm in downtown Vancouver at the FIFA Congress.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Yeah, that kind of like that.
- 0:17Speaker 2: It's kind of like the FIFA AGM. You know you've
- 0:19Speaker 2: got like owners meetings in the NFL. Well, this is
- 0:22Speaker 2: this is two hundred and eleven delegations with sixteen hundred
- 0:28Speaker 2: people represented that are are representing those those countries, those
- 0:33Speaker 2: delegations actually sorry, two hundred and ten because Iran didn't
- 0:36Speaker 2: make it. They got stopped and they got stopped in Toronto,
- 0:40Speaker 2: so they're not here.
- 0:41Speaker 1: What do you mean they'reped in Toronto? What's that mean?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Well, when they came, their original port of entry into
- 0:48Speaker 2: Canada was in Toronto and then they were going to connect,
- 0:50Speaker 2: you know, clear customs connect and coming to Vancouver, and
- 0:53Speaker 2: I guess there were there were some issues there. They
- 0:55Speaker 2: got stopped and they got turned away, so their delegation
- 0:58Speaker 2: is nast here. You know, there's some concerns that you know,
- 1:03Speaker 2: there are certain people involved in sport associations and other
- 1:08Speaker 2: parts of their associations. And associations in other areas that
- 1:12Speaker 2: have ties to their regime, which both Canada and the
- 1:16Speaker 2: United States have labeled a terrorist organization. So if if
- 1:20Speaker 2: they're connected formally, they're they're going to get turned away.
- 1:24Speaker 2: And I guess that's what's happened here, and that's really
- 1:26Speaker 2: the big concern from the standpoint of having their participation
- 1:29Speaker 2: in the World Cup. They you know, they they've the
- 1:32Speaker 2: US government has said the players are not a problem.
- 1:34Speaker 2: They're going to get in, but there's going to be
- 1:35Speaker 2: some support staff that if they're tied to this regime,
- 1:38Speaker 2: we're not going to get them in. If there's media
- 1:41Speaker 2: members that are tied to their regime, they're not going
- 1:43Speaker 2: to come in. So you know, that's kind of what
- 1:44Speaker 2: they're dealing with right now. But Geo and Fintano, the
- 1:48Speaker 2: president of FIFA, was unequivocal. He said, they are absolutely
- 1:52Speaker 2: going to.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Play in the World Cup, and they're going to play
- 1:55Speaker 1: in Seattle.
- 1:57Speaker 2: You got it, so you might so no media is allowed.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I could see like El Jazeera giving you a call
- 2:04Speaker 2: and saying, hey, Greg, could you cover the other football
- 2:07Speaker 2: for you know, a couple of months when we've got
- 2:09Speaker 2: this little tournament going on. This is a freelance gig
- 2:12Speaker 2: and like when I come on with you the same.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Thing, it might be the News Tribune's iron beat writer
- 2:19Speaker 1: for the World Cup.
- 2:21Speaker 2: There you go.
- 2:22Speaker 3: That's interesting. Well, thank you for the FIFA Congress update.
- 2:24Speaker 3: I had no idea how Ron was getting turned away
- 2:26Speaker 3: in April and.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Well, and all of that is in the back with
- 2:29Speaker 2: the backdrop of the Vancouver White Cap.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Situation, right, that was about that.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Well, there was a small protest here, so one of
- 2:36Speaker 2: the White Cap supporters and groups had about fifty people here.
- 2:39Speaker 2: I mean, you know, eight o'clock on a weekday morning,
- 2:42Speaker 2: it's going to be tough to get everybody out of work.
- 2:43Speaker 2: But they were pretty loud and passionate and wanted to
- 2:45Speaker 2: make a statement to anybody who note that was coming
- 2:47Speaker 2: into the building. And look, this is a this is
- 2:51Speaker 2: a global city, right like soccer. The roots for soccer
- 2:55Speaker 2: run deep here and there's a fifty year history for
- 2:58Speaker 2: the white Caps. So you could say what you about
- 3:00Speaker 2: MLS and it's relevance on the overall sporting landscape big picture,
- 3:05Speaker 2: but from a micro level though, it catch matter here
- 3:08Speaker 2: and now they're awesome, Like for the last few years
- 3:11Speaker 2: they've been the best team in MLS, right, like just
- 3:13Speaker 2: their win loss. I know they lost in the championship
- 3:16Speaker 2: game last year, but you factor in this year's results,
- 3:19Speaker 2: like this team is doing it on the court or
- 3:21Speaker 2: on the on the field. They've got twenty seven thousand
- 3:24Speaker 2: at their last game. They've had, you know, most of
- 3:26Speaker 2: their games, all of their games have been over twenty thousand.
- 3:28Speaker 2: This year, they're averaging close to twenty five. So the
- 3:31Speaker 2: team is awesome, the fans are fully engaged, and you know,
- 3:35Speaker 2: yet it's not enough because of a stadium deal. Now
- 3:38Speaker 2: you know my thing in all of this, Like I've
- 3:41Speaker 2: always felt MLS is a Ponzi scheme, right, Like I
- 3:44Speaker 2: know that's a twenty year old narrative, Like I believe
- 3:46Speaker 2: it's real because there's no meaningful revenue on a national
- 3:51Speaker 2: level compared to the other big sports leagues, right Like
- 3:54Speaker 2: this league compared to the NHL is what the NHL
- 3:57Speaker 2: is to the NFL, right, Like, it's just it's nothing.
- 4:01Speaker 2: It's mice nuts, right, and you've got you've got three hundreds,
- 4:04Speaker 2: like you know, you what's there's two point five billion
- 4:07Speaker 2: in revenue, Okay, not national revenue, but total revenue for
- 4:11Speaker 2: this league over twenty percent of that comes from three franchises,
- 4:16Speaker 2: the two LA teams in Miami, right, and then you've
- 4:18Speaker 2: only got three hundred million in national revenue, so that
- 4:21Speaker 2: includes the TV deal. So less than ten percent, like
- 4:25Speaker 2: let's choy, less than ten million dollars per year goes
- 4:29Speaker 2: to teams from the television deal. Like, just imagine the
- 4:33Speaker 2: NFL living in that world. It's just not enough. So
- 4:36Speaker 2: there's this narrative from Don Garber and MLS that Vancouver
- 4:41Speaker 2: or British Columbia has left down the white Caps. How
- 4:43Speaker 2: about MLF is left down the white Caps, right, and
- 4:46Speaker 2: really every other team because sixteen of twenty nine teams
- 4:49Speaker 2: in this league lose money. You on, many teams in
- 4:52Speaker 2: the other four major sports leagues combined to lose money,
- 4:56Speaker 2: two NBA teams, nobody else loses money. But in this league,
- 5:00Speaker 2: sixteen or twenty nine teams lose money. That's that's a
- 5:03Speaker 2: failure at a league level.
- 5:06Speaker 3: What So, there's rumors that Vancouver could move to Las Vegas,
- 5:10Speaker 3: to Sacramento, to Phoenix, maybe even Indianapolis. I've also seen
- 5:14Speaker 3: reports that there has been an effort to make a
- 5:16Speaker 3: new soccer pitch and stadium at Hastings Park of in Vancouver.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Is is BC not producing a BC place, not producing revenue.
- 5:25Speaker 1: For the team.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Is it just because it's old and outdated in an
- 5:28Speaker 3: inflatable dome or not built for soccer? What's the main
- 5:31Speaker 3: issue going on there?
- 5:34Speaker 2: Well, like the team doesn't control the stadium, right, So
- 5:36Speaker 2: you look at the situation with in Seattle where you know,
- 5:40Speaker 2: the Sounders and the Seahawks essentially manage the stadium. The
- 5:46Speaker 2: team or the city owns it formally, but the you
- 5:50Speaker 2: know those teams and it's one organ Yeah, it's one
- 5:52Speaker 2: organization they manage. So they get all the money and
- 5:55Speaker 2: all the revenue. Well, here there's a Crown corporation called
- 5:59Speaker 2: it's called a COO BC Place Pavilion Corporation and they
- 6:04Speaker 2: they own the stadium there. They run the stadium on
- 6:06Speaker 2: behalf of the provincial government. Here, so the team rents
- 6:09Speaker 2: the stadium. Now you know they've questioned their their rent
- 6:12Speaker 2: deals and their their least deals, the terms of that. Well,
- 6:15Speaker 2: the province has come back to them and said, okay,
- 6:17Speaker 2: we'll change that and we're not going to make a
- 6:20Speaker 2: penny off it. So all the parking will now come
- 6:22Speaker 2: back to you. All the all the concessions. You know,
- 6:25Speaker 2: the profit from concessions and parking will come back to you.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Even the advertising profits will come back to you. But
- 6:31Speaker 2: we can't do it at a loss, right And you
- 6:34Speaker 2: know understand that in and around the Olympics. Coming out
- 6:36Speaker 2: of the Olympics, there was almost a half billion in
- 6:39Speaker 2: revenue or sorry, not revenue renovations for this stadium. So
- 6:44Speaker 2: there's debt servicing on that whole situation. So, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 2: Don Garbara at one point floated that if we you know,
- 6:50Speaker 2: if you can't get a stadium that you can own,
- 6:52Speaker 2: at least, you know, at least let us have a
- 6:53Speaker 2: management contract for the stadium and let us run the stadium. Well,
- 6:56Speaker 2: the team has never made that pitch formally to the
- 6:59Speaker 2: province to say, okay, here's our deal. So the province
- 7:02Speaker 2: is said, okay, well, come to us with a pitch.
- 7:05Speaker 2: But it's got to include debt servicing. You can't just
- 7:07Speaker 2: make it up as you go and you guys keep
- 7:08Speaker 2: the money and then we continue to lose money, right like,
- 7:11Speaker 2: you have to take on that part of it. So
- 7:12Speaker 2: let's see if the team steps forward with that. As
- 7:15Speaker 2: far as the Hastings Park proposal, you know, coming out
- 7:18Speaker 2: of the MLS Cup, there was a memorandum of understanding
- 7:22Speaker 2: where the City of Vancouver gave the soccer club twelve
- 7:26Speaker 2: months to explore a development project for that area, so
- 7:31Speaker 2: they had exclusive rights. They can go out there and
- 7:33Speaker 2: you can decide what you want to build, how you
- 7:36Speaker 2: want to build it, what you want it to look like.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Doesn't include residential, does it include commercial? And what's the
- 7:41Speaker 2: financing of that going to look like? Because this is Canada, man,
- 7:44Speaker 2: like you don't you know, we don't have counties. You
- 7:47Speaker 2: don't just get to say, okay, you know this is
- 7:49Speaker 2: this is Henderson Park County and we just get to
- 7:52Speaker 2: have this. You know, we get to have a levee,
- 7:54Speaker 2: or we get to have a little vote, or our
- 7:55Speaker 2: city council gets to put something on the table and
- 7:57Speaker 2: assign a tourism tax or stadium tax like they didn't Seattle.
- 8:00Speaker 2: It doesn't work like that up here. So there's not
- 8:02Speaker 2: going to be a bunch of residents that sit there
- 8:04Speaker 2: and say they're going to subsidize this. It's not as
- 8:07Speaker 2: simple as that here. So they've got to figure out
- 8:10Speaker 2: what their solution is. But you know, everyone seems to
- 8:12Speaker 2: want to find a way to make it work. And
- 8:15Speaker 2: you know, within all of this circling back to my
- 8:18Speaker 2: Ponzi's scheme comment, the true revenue in this league is
- 8:23Speaker 2: a expansion fees and b when you sell. So you
- 8:26Speaker 2: know the Clippers lose one hundred million a year, but
- 8:29Speaker 2: that franchise, you know, it got sold for two billion,
- 8:32Speaker 2: right to Steve Baumer, so they can they know that
- 8:36Speaker 2: at some point they're going to cash out. Well, the
- 8:39Speaker 2: owners here for the white Caps bought this team for
- 8:40Speaker 2: I think forty five million, and so now they could
- 8:43Speaker 2: sell it for three hundred and fifty million, and they've
- 8:45Speaker 2: been losing money hand over fist, so they just may
- 8:48Speaker 2: determine that, Okay, we're done, like it's time to cash out.
- 8:51Speaker 2: We don't want a good deal, we don't want to
- 8:53Speaker 2: run a stadium. We want our money now. So that's fine.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Is there a Vancouver buyer. I don't know about the
- 9:00Speaker 2: whole thing in terms of running the stadium. We're about
- 9:02Speaker 2: to find out. Because with everybody else, not only with
- 9:04Speaker 2: every other sports league, not only is your asset appreciating,
- 9:07Speaker 2: but you're still making money. It's not happening here. They're
- 9:10Speaker 2: losing significant sums of money in Vancouver. So you've got
- 9:13Speaker 2: to see what the motivation level is to continue with
- 9:16Speaker 2: that because you will be able to cash out at
- 9:18Speaker 2: some point.
- 9:19Speaker 3: This Vancouver Economics and Civics lesson is brought to you
- 9:21Speaker 3: by Barren LAWSYTSN Vancouver here on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline
- 9:25Speaker 3: on ninety three point three Kids football man.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, depressing, Okay, I'm sorry, Farhan, I got to
- 9:31Speaker 4: hit you with the hockey question about the Kraken. A
- 9:33Speaker 4: lot of our listeners are probably curious on your insight
- 9:36Speaker 4: regarding this team because they have not preached, but they've
- 9:38Speaker 4: talked about just being patient, and Seattle feels stuck in
- 9:42Speaker 4: the middle in terms of going in the off season,
- 9:44Speaker 4: having a successful one, getting back to the playoffs. How
- 9:46Speaker 4: aggressive should this team be this summer to avoid I
- 9:51Speaker 4: guess this spinning wheel of oh yeah, just be a
- 9:53Speaker 4: little patient, but we're going to bring in some stars
- 9:55Speaker 4: to get this playoff team back to where it needs
- 9:57Speaker 4: to be.
- 9:58Speaker 1: At least they're not to cannuct so far.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Well, there is that, and I mean the difference between
- 10:04Speaker 2: these two teams is one is in the mushy middle,
- 10:08Speaker 2: the other one is at the bottom. And it also
- 10:11Speaker 2: has a massive culture problems, right, Like the locker room
- 10:14Speaker 2: is a bad place, and you know it's got the
- 10:16Speaker 2: chance to get better because they've turned over the roster.
- 10:18Speaker 2: There's still a couple of pieces in there that aren't
- 10:20Speaker 2: necessarily ideal. But you know, if the organization empowers these
- 10:26Speaker 2: young players to take on the old culture as opposed to,
- 10:29Speaker 2: you know, doing some of the policies and practices that
- 10:31Speaker 2: have allowed the other group, the previous court, to get
- 10:34Speaker 2: as toxic as it was, you know, that's not a
- 10:37Speaker 2: good thing. So there's a unique opportunity here. If there's
- 10:39Speaker 2: a new president, a new GM, they can take advantage of.
- 10:41Speaker 1: All of that.
- 10:42Speaker 2: That's great. Whereas Seattle's problems are just hockey related, right,
- 10:45Speaker 2: it's not bigger than that, like it is in Vancouver
- 10:48Speaker 2: and Seattle is number one. They absolutely blew the expansion draft, right,
- 10:53Speaker 2: and I understand that there was a few more restrictions
- 10:56Speaker 2: placed on it as opposed to what Vegas had, but
- 10:59Speaker 2: not significant restrictions that could have prevented them. What happened
- 11:02Speaker 2: was other teams got wise that we're not going to
- 11:05Speaker 2: let this happen again, and the seat, you know, the
- 11:08Speaker 2: Kraken didn't necessarily get ahead of the curve, anticipating what
- 11:13Speaker 2: might happen and how to then take advantage of it.
- 11:15Speaker 2: So that's a problem, and they all of a sudden
- 11:17Speaker 2: have immediately gone into a team in the mushy middle.
- 11:19Speaker 2: They talk about that in the NHL as the last
- 11:22Speaker 2: place you want to be. Being at the top is great.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Being at the bottom is great because you could get
- 11:26Speaker 2: a generational player, right, and that's how you build in
- 11:29Speaker 2: some of these leagues. But being the middle or the
- 11:31Speaker 2: kraken are is not a good place to be. And
- 11:34Speaker 2: you know, this year, at the beginning of the season
- 11:35Speaker 2: they were doing really well and everybody thought, okay, they've
- 11:37Speaker 2: turned things around. They had one year of paying because
- 11:40Speaker 2: the year prior to that they were in the playoffs.
- 11:43Speaker 2: There's no star power. You talk about wanting to bring
- 11:47Speaker 2: some in, Well, this isn't the summer to do that
- 11:49Speaker 2: because there is nothing available in the free agency. You know,
- 11:52Speaker 2: there's some aging guys that are in you know, thirty three,
- 11:55Speaker 2: thirty four that might have some name value, but you
- 11:57Speaker 2: don't want to bring those guys in at this stage
- 12:00Speaker 2: stars for you. So that's the problem. And you know,
- 12:04Speaker 2: potentially there's a little bit more of a freezing class
- 12:06Speaker 2: next year. Right now, you're getting into a point where
- 12:08Speaker 2: the salary camp has gone up. You know, revenues have
- 12:11Speaker 2: gone up, and that's allowing teams to be more aggressive
- 12:13Speaker 2: to keep their own free agents. You know, they don't
- 12:16Speaker 2: have to make the hard decisions they had to make
- 12:18Speaker 2: a couple of years ago. That time will circle back
- 12:20Speaker 2: and at that time maybe the crack and can take
- 12:23Speaker 2: advantage of it if they want to bring in players.
- 12:25Speaker 2: They've got to be creative on the trade front. But
- 12:27Speaker 2: you know, do you take a chance on Ilias Peterson
- 12:30Speaker 2: in Vancouver who put you know, as a reclamation project
- 12:34Speaker 2: who potentially could go back to being a star if
- 12:37Speaker 2: he was elsewhere, Like, it's not going to happen here.
- 12:39Speaker 2: There's too much pressure on him in Vancouver, and the
- 12:41Speaker 2: microscope is too big because you know, the Canucks start
- 12:44Speaker 2: the Seahawks, Like that is the team up here and
- 12:47Speaker 2: you can't escape it, whereas in Seattle it might be
- 12:49Speaker 2: a little bit different. He needs to get to a place,
- 12:51Speaker 2: in my mind, and he's got full no trade protection,
- 12:54Speaker 2: but he needs to go to a place where the
- 12:56Speaker 2: spotlight is not so bright. Set a reset button on
- 12:59Speaker 2: his career. And decide that he wants to work hard
- 13:01Speaker 2: enough in the offseason to maximize his talent. I can't
- 13:04Speaker 2: believe there's no talent there anymore. But you know, it's
- 13:07Speaker 2: been you know, twenty six months of nothing here in Vancouver,
- 13:10Speaker 2: and I just think if he's going to get it
- 13:12Speaker 2: figured out, it's got to be elsewhere.
- 13:13Speaker 1: It can't be here Peterson.
- 13:15Speaker 2: But to Seattle's point, do you want to take that chance,
- 13:18Speaker 2: right and bring in a guy like that that maybe
- 13:20Speaker 2: you can take a big swing and maybe you wind
- 13:22Speaker 2: up hitting right.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Well, this is interesting. I was about to ask you
- 13:25Speaker 3: about Peterson. He Petterson he actually called out as it were,
- 13:30Speaker 3: the front office. Ian McIntyre wrote an article about his
- 13:33Speaker 3: critical of the way the direction of the franchise is going,
- 13:37Speaker 3: at least the way I read it. Do you see
- 13:39Speaker 3: him as part of the culture problem? Is he part
- 13:41Speaker 3: of the fix? Or and or if the Kraken want
- 13:44Speaker 3: to make a run at Alas Petterson, what kind of
- 13:46Speaker 3: package could they possibly get for him at twenty seven
- 13:49Speaker 3: years old?
- 13:50Speaker 2: Well, Petterson scored once, scored in one of his last
- 13:54Speaker 2: thirty six games, right, So there's not a lot of
- 13:57Speaker 2: asset value there for Vancouver. The contract is frightened, and
- 14:00Speaker 2: you know, with the Canucks, in my opinion, would they
- 14:02Speaker 2: trade him for a first round pick? I think they would,
- 14:05Speaker 2: right if they could not, if they would not have
- 14:06Speaker 2: to retain any salary. Right. So is there a hybrid
- 14:10Speaker 2: there where the crack can have a player that has,
- 14:13Speaker 2: you know, two years of bad money left on him,
- 14:14Speaker 2: and the Canucks take back two years of bad money.
- 14:16Speaker 2: They might do that, but then I'm going to take
- 14:18Speaker 2: six years of salary attention, So you know, so that's
- 14:20Speaker 2: a problem. But I don't think that the Canucks are
- 14:22Speaker 2: going to expect a haul to move off of a
- 14:26Speaker 2: player like Peterson. Is he part of a culture problem?
- 14:28Speaker 2: That's an interesting one because his personality is not big, right,
- 14:33Speaker 2: He's clearly not a leader here, is making eleven point
- 14:37Speaker 2: six million dollars and is not carrying his way on
- 14:39Speaker 2: the ice, and by all accounts, is not doing what
- 14:42Speaker 2: he needs to do in the offseason to take every
- 14:46Speaker 2: effort possible to rebuild his game. So you know, he's
- 14:50Speaker 2: not part of a locker room problem per se. He's
- 14:52Speaker 2: definitely not part of the solution and he's not part
- 14:55Speaker 2: of the leadership group. Right. There's that, and then the
- 14:57Speaker 2: other big personality that is still here from the old
- 15:00Speaker 2: corps is Thatcher Demko. But given his history, that's his
- 15:04Speaker 2: injury history, that's going to be a tough one to
- 15:06Speaker 2: move as well.
- 15:08Speaker 3: This is far on lawsy TSN based out of Vancouver.
- 15:11Speaker 3: He was in Toronto this week for the CFL Draft
- 15:15Speaker 3: and he was also very interested in the NFL Draft.
- 15:17Speaker 3: What surprised you about the NFL Draft? I mean the
- 15:23Speaker 3: ty Simpson pick at thirteen for the Rams sticks out
- 15:25Speaker 3: to me. But what surprise do you either the top
- 15:27Speaker 3: or anywhere in the NFL draft?
- 15:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean absolutely it's that pick.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I was probably surprised that Kate went as high as
- 15:37Speaker 2: he did, but not by much, right, I e stuckted
- 15:39Speaker 2: him to go in the seven eight range. He went
- 15:40Speaker 2: up to form the ty Simpson pick. There was no
- 15:44Speaker 2: smoke that he was going to get taken that high.
- 15:46Speaker 2: And you know, I think a lot of us feel
- 15:48Speaker 2: that the Rams aren't serious about the draft, that they
- 15:51Speaker 2: would much rather you know, we've seen this before, right,
- 15:53Speaker 2: that they'd much rather move that pick for an experienced
- 15:56Speaker 2: player and take advantage of that window with Matthew Stafford
- 16:00Speaker 2: to win today. And I kind of thought that's what
- 16:02Speaker 2: would happen, and certainly it would have made a lot
- 16:05Speaker 2: of sense for them to trade back into the you know,
- 16:08Speaker 2: twenty five to twenty sixth spot, and you know, Ty Simpson,
- 16:11Speaker 2: I think a lot of us felt was that Lamar
- 16:12Speaker 2: Jackson type of situation where a team trades back up
- 16:16Speaker 2: into the late stage of the first round just so
- 16:18Speaker 2: you can take advantage of the fifty year in the
- 16:20Speaker 2: contract having him as a first round player, right, and
- 16:22Speaker 2: then if you are the Rams and you you know
- 16:25Speaker 2: you don't he doesn't see the field for three years
- 16:28Speaker 2: because the stafford still wants to play for two. That
- 16:30Speaker 2: makes sense if you've got if you've got five years
- 16:32Speaker 2: of player control. So you know, I'm mixed in the player.
- 16:36Speaker 2: I mean, I definitely thought he was the second best quarterback,
- 16:40Speaker 2: but well behind. I'm just not a believer that you
- 16:43Speaker 2: can have fifteen starts and that that's enough of a
- 16:46Speaker 2: sample size and enough experience for you to be ready
- 16:48Speaker 2: to make it happen at the next level. I just
- 16:51Speaker 2: don't think that makes sense. I understand what mcvahan's needs
- 16:54Speaker 2: say about system fit. I buy it. I understand, you know, like,
- 16:57Speaker 2: if they've evaluated a skill set a certain way. That's great,
- 17:00Speaker 2: But again, fifteen starts. Yeah, it's fifteen starts from the SEC.
- 17:04Speaker 2: But so is mac Jones right like, and so it's
- 17:07Speaker 2: not it makes me uncomfortable, But it just seems like
- 17:12Speaker 2: an organization that lives up to its narrative that it's
- 17:14Speaker 2: just not serious about the draft.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say, I mean, the Rams are almost
- 17:20Speaker 3: never drafting that high. Certainly, an NFC Championship game participant's
- 17:23Speaker 3: not going to draft at thirteen normally.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you got a chance, you got a chance
- 17:27Speaker 2: to really help Matthews exactly. You know, they've got some
- 17:30Speaker 2: holes on that offensive line. There were high end players
- 17:33Speaker 2: that were still available. So for them to make that
- 17:36Speaker 2: kind of move at that time, I thought, I thought
- 17:37Speaker 2: was different. I liked a lot of what the Seahawks did.
- 17:40Speaker 2: I thought their first four picks are gonna be guys
- 17:42Speaker 2: that really really helped his team.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Jim on the Tech Sign two five three says, Hey,
- 17:48Speaker 3: this guy's great. He needs a weekly segment.
- 17:51Speaker 1: That is the plan to do it. We are going
- 17:54Speaker 1: to do far Ahlow every week.
- 17:56Speaker 3: We're going to figure out a day at what time
- 17:58Speaker 3: to do If they hit far on a great friends,
- 18:01Speaker 3: great Buds going back their way back. You mentioned to
- 18:03Speaker 3: me last night the CFL draft you did in Toronto
- 18:06Speaker 3: this weekend had an Eastern Washington flair too, it didn't it.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, Eastern Washington's placed a ton of players
- 18:12Speaker 2: in the CFL. We've had quarterbacks like Vernon Adams and
- 18:15Speaker 2: Bowlievi Mitchell and Matt Nichols that have really done well
- 18:18Speaker 2: in this league. And you know, the Big Sky generally,
- 18:21Speaker 2: but Eastern specifically, Aaron Best does a great job over there.
- 18:24Speaker 2: So there's a receiver and he's actually Canadian. The CFL
- 18:27Speaker 2: draft is for Canadian players. Right when you come into
- 18:30Speaker 2: the league. The Canadian players come in via the draft.
- 18:33Speaker 2: American players come in via negotiation list, right, and so
- 18:36Speaker 2: half the rosters are Canadian, half the rosters are American,
- 18:39Speaker 2: and then you've got to start a certain amount of Canadians,
- 18:41Speaker 2: which is how the league works. So the draft is
- 18:43Speaker 2: an important part of it. And so there's a kid
- 18:45Speaker 2: named Nolan Ulm who's from Colonna, British Columbia. If you've
- 18:48Speaker 2: never been to Colowna, go to Cologna because it as
- 18:51Speaker 2: a spectacular place. And yeah, and so Nolan's been at
- 18:55Speaker 2: Eastern for six years. He you know, had the COVID
- 18:58Speaker 2: year and then then had an injury red shirt a
- 19:00Speaker 2: year ago, so he was able to get, you know,
- 19:02Speaker 2: able to get a sixth year and just a great kid.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I've known him since high school and you know, he
- 19:07Speaker 2: had a really good like twenty twenty three was probably
- 19:10Speaker 2: his high watermark. The last years have kind of been
- 19:12Speaker 2: up and down for him, but he was still able
- 19:14Speaker 2: to get drafted and just a quality kid. He was
- 19:17Speaker 2: part of the American Football Coaches Association Good Hands Award
- 19:20Speaker 2: team as far as all the off field stuff he does,
- 19:23Speaker 2: and you know, and that's something that Aaron really promotes
- 19:25Speaker 2: with the guys out at Eastern Right. He watched those
- 19:27Speaker 2: guys involved in the community. He wants them making a difference,
- 19:30Speaker 2: and Nolan certainly took advantage of that. So it's cool
- 19:33Speaker 2: for me to have followed his career since high school
- 19:36Speaker 2: and to see him get a chance to play. But
- 19:37Speaker 2: the draft was fun. It's a complicated draft because two
- 19:41Speaker 2: Canadian players got drafted in the NFL draft and then
- 19:44Speaker 2: six other guys signed as undrafted free agents. So when
- 19:47Speaker 2: you were a CFL GM and you're going through your draft,
- 19:49Speaker 2: you have to navigate all of that, because the higher
- 19:51Speaker 2: you get taken in the NFL draft, the lower you
- 19:54Speaker 2: get taken in the CFL draft. So a Key Messidor
- 19:56Speaker 2: who's one of the star defensive ends for the University
- 19:59Speaker 2: of Miami play in the National Championship Game. You know,
- 20:02Speaker 2: he got taken in i think twenty second overall to
- 20:05Speaker 2: the Rams or to the Chargers in the NFL draft.
- 20:08Speaker 2: He didn't get drafted in the CFL draft, and he
- 20:09Speaker 2: was by far the best Canadian available. But if you
- 20:12Speaker 2: know he's never going to come up here, why would
- 20:13Speaker 2: you draft him?
- 20:14Speaker 3: Right? So do they have seventh round picks in the
- 20:16Speaker 3: NFL who are high draft picks in the CFL some
- 20:20Speaker 3: years not this era?
- 20:22Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 20:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean generally what happens is in the first
- 20:25Speaker 2: round they want availability, right, So if you've been drafted
- 20:28Speaker 2: and they know they're not going to get you, they
- 20:30Speaker 2: generally want the best player that's going to be available
- 20:33Speaker 2: that year. Then the type of players that were raft
- 20:35Speaker 2: that were undrafted free agents that signed those three years
- 20:38Speaker 2: contracts and those you know, there was a i think
- 20:40Speaker 2: a sixth round offensive lineman in the NFL draft, a
- 20:43Speaker 2: kid out of Boston College. You know, those are the
- 20:45Speaker 2: types of players who might go around to right and
- 20:47Speaker 2: then it kind of works from there. But you know,
- 20:50Speaker 2: I mean some guys that just don't get picked at all.
- 20:52Speaker 2: If the word on them is that their locks in
- 20:54Speaker 2: the NFL and there were a high draft pick in
- 20:56Speaker 2: the NFL, those guys aren't going to get drafted into
- 20:58Speaker 2: this league.
- 20:59Speaker 3: You a man for Hunt. We're gonna by popular demand,
- 21:02Speaker 3: You're coming back. You can't get rid of us. Let's
- 21:05Speaker 3: do it, thanks, Let's do it.
- 21:06Speaker 2: I can't look. Seattle is my favorite city. I love
- 21:10Speaker 2: all the time I get to spend down there. You know,
- 21:11Speaker 2: I'm there for every Sea Hot team. I come down
- 21:14Speaker 2: when I can. My favorite, like my favorite thing to do,
- 21:17Speaker 2: honestly truly, and maybe I maybe I need more things
- 21:20Speaker 2: to do is bark at the Park with the Mariners.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Like the last few years since I got a dog,
- 21:25Speaker 2: I've been so in and I've taken my kids and
- 21:28Speaker 2: my dog we go to bark at the park. So
- 21:30Speaker 2: we'll be their May nineteenth. I love and I love
- 21:32Speaker 2: my Huskies. You know this, Like I'm a big Huskies fan.
- 21:35Speaker 2: I do so and you know, and I told my son,
- 21:37Speaker 2: so he's a quarterback up here in Lindon. He's going
- 21:39Speaker 2: to go to prep school in Virginia in the fall,
- 21:41Speaker 2: and you know, he's he's got a chance to play
- 21:44Speaker 2: FCS football, pretty good chances. You know, there's a bunch
- 21:47Speaker 2: of schools, particularly back east there. They're looking at him.
- 21:49Speaker 2: And I said, look, I don't care you go to Harvard.
- 21:51Speaker 2: I am still cheering for the Huskies.
- 21:53Speaker 3: You just know that you got to schedule a Harvard
- 21:55Speaker 3: Washington home and home so you can get your boy
- 21:58Speaker 3: to come out here and you go see him play back.
- 22:00Speaker 2: We go to two or three games every year. Now
- 22:02Speaker 2: he's less send you because he feels like he's, you know,
- 22:05Speaker 2: eventually going to be a college player. So he thinks
- 22:07Speaker 2: that I shouldn't be a fan of other college players
- 22:09Speaker 2: now right. So it's kind of getting to that point.
- 22:12Speaker 1: So yeah, well, good look to hear.
- 22:14Speaker 3: I know he's making Big Chang's great desire from you.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Take care of that FIFA Compress Congress. We'll talk to
- 22:19Speaker 3: you soon. We'll figure out a date. We'll do this weekly.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Thanks man, take care money far loll. Yeah, we went
- 22:27Speaker 3: all over the place with him there. There's comments on
- 22:31Speaker 3: the tech line. You guys love him. He's been a
- 22:33Speaker 3: great friend of mine for years. I've covered national championships,
- 22:36Speaker 3: Super Bowls, Seahawk games with him. Yeah, he'll be a
- 22:39Speaker 3: part of the show. We'll figure out a Dayton. You'll
- 22:41Speaker 3: hear from far on quite a bit. I'm next, We'll

- 23:37Speaker 3: if You missed far a logy, and he had a
- 23:40Speaker 3: lot to say, including mice nuts.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Yeah, that might have been the best line I've ever heard.
- 23:45Speaker 4: I have never heard someone refer to what he was
- 23:49Speaker 4: mice nuts. That is amazing, That's that was great. I
- 23:54Speaker 4: will be stealing that.
- 23:56Speaker 1: What was it in reference to? Again, I'm trying.
- 23:58Speaker 4: That's why I couldn't even explain it, becase, because when
- 24:00Speaker 4: he said.
- 24:00Speaker 1: It, my brain just went, what mice nuns? That was awesome?
- 24:03Speaker 1: Mice that's awesome.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Yeah, you're here from fire Honology again. If you missed it,

- 24:22Speaker 3: got held up in customs in Toronto Congress. If FIFA
- 24:26Speaker 3: Congress is meeting out of the World Cup, it's in Vancouver.
- 24:29Speaker 3: Of course, Vancouver is going to host the World Cup,
- 24:31Speaker 3: so Seattle, we're going to be part of that coverage.
- 24:35Speaker 3: More details to come on that four nine four five
- 24:38Speaker 3: one to come a to Odge text line of music
- 24:39Speaker 3: means your chance to be part of the show.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Will we read back your text every day? Greg?
- 24:43Speaker 4: If you could bring back one former Seahawk in their
- 24:46Speaker 4: prime to add to this team, who would it be?
- 24:49Speaker 1: Bobby Wagner?
- 24:51Speaker 3: That was quick, not even hesitation saying about it. On
- 24:53Speaker 3: this team particularly, you wouldn't need Bobby Wagner because of
- 24:56Speaker 3: Ernest Jones. But I'm just selfishly saying for my own
- 24:59Speaker 3: personal I would cover Bobby Wagner ten days a week,
- 25:04Speaker 3: fourteen months a year.
- 25:05Speaker 1: He's such a gentleman. He's such so much more than
- 25:08Speaker 1: football too.
- 25:09Speaker 3: But now speaking about this particular team, Seawan, Alexander, Kurt Warner,
- 25:16Speaker 3: a need running back in his prime is who i'd
- 25:18Speaker 3: bring back?
- 25:19Speaker 1: What about you? I mean that's the biggest need, right man.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Bobby was gonna be my first list, but you immediately
- 25:27Speaker 4: grabbed him.
- 25:28Speaker 1: That was selfish.
- 25:29Speaker 4: No, it's okay, let's see it's not based on need.
- 25:33Speaker 4: But man, what do I want to I don't even okay,
- 25:38Speaker 4: you know what?
- 25:39Speaker 1: Why not? Richard Sherman.
- 25:42Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not like they need him, but if you
- 25:43Speaker 4: could just put him on there, that'd be I think
- 25:45Speaker 4: that'd be really cool to see he'd be interesting.
- 25:47Speaker 1: With Witherspoon, we'd.
- 25:49Speaker 4: Be really bored then, my goodness, he would. The pressures
- 25:53Speaker 4: would be the most entertaining because the tape wouldn't be good.
- 25:56Speaker 3: They'd come out together like Doug Baldwin and Richard Sherman
- 25:58Speaker 3: used to. I'll never forget the day they did that, right,
- 26:00Speaker 3: mocking the NFL and advertising and pepsi And yeah, eight
- 26:06Speaker 3: four to three, I got to go back in my catalog,
- 26:09Speaker 3: know where that is? Eight four to three says what
- 26:12Speaker 3: position do you think the Seahawks are strongest, weakest?
- 26:16Speaker 1: Much love, much love back to you.
- 26:18Speaker 3: The strongest position to me is the secondary because of
- 26:21Speaker 3: all the pieces you can move around and Witherspoon, I
- 26:24Speaker 3: really think Josh Job is an underrated corner.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Julian love of fixture at safety.
- 26:28Speaker 3: How they replace Kobe Bryant, it'll be a big deal,
- 26:31Speaker 3: But Tyle Katta did very well, and now they drafted
- 26:34Speaker 3: Bud Clark secondary because of all the options, it gives
- 26:38Speaker 3: Mike McDonald.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Weakest running back.
- 26:43Speaker 3: With Jack Sharboney out for who knows how long, unproven
- 26:47Speaker 3: across the board. After that, I don't think it's even
- 26:50Speaker 3: close to be running back, don't you.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Running back for sure, but I will go with D line.
- 26:55Speaker 4: I know they lost Boyer, right, but what they were
- 26:58Speaker 4: able to do with simulated pressure and just the four
- 27:00Speaker 4: fat men who told me the strongest my apology, Yes, weakest,
- 27:03Speaker 4: running back strongest. I say the defensive line just because
- 27:06Speaker 4: of I mean, they sent four dudes after you and
- 27:09Speaker 4: it was mayhem every time. And those four dudes were
- 27:12Speaker 4: really good last season. Mike McDonald's a wizard with simulated pressure.
- 27:16Speaker 4: So it's a one A, one B thing for me
- 27:19Speaker 4: regarding the secondary and the D line.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Two six is I'd bring back Locke, an amazing person.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Well said, he is an amazing person. Dustin two five three,
- 27:28Speaker 3: long time listener, bring back tez Anchor down.
- 27:30Speaker 1: The middle of the D line. Good call.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Two five three. What about Big Walt? You could put
- 27:34Speaker 3: Big Wall on any team making better Hall of Famer?
- 27:38Speaker 3: I agree with that too. Two o six Jerry Rice
- 27:41Speaker 3: in his prime, Yes, not the Seattle version.
- 27:43Speaker 4: I'm not gonna lie that was the first, but I'm
- 27:45Speaker 4: like I have to say in his prime and that
- 27:47Speaker 4: that that's not gonna happen.
- 27:48Speaker 3: So I covered Jerry Rice's up to his exit for
- 27:51Speaker 3: the Raiders. I covered that move from the Raiders to
- 27:53Speaker 3: the Seahawks, and I will tell you that everybody in
- 27:56Speaker 3: the Raiders building at the time.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Was like, yeah, good luck with that.
- 28:00Speaker 3: They knew the time was over, and the Raiders ware
- 28:03Speaker 3: yeah okay, and yeah yeah, did.
- 28:06Speaker 1: You already ask this one? Who is the most underrated?
- 28:09Speaker 2: No?
- 28:09Speaker 1: Okay, who is the most underrated Sawk? Right now? From
- 28:11Speaker 1: the eight to four to three?
- 28:13Speaker 3: Ooh, it might be for value and production and how
- 28:22Speaker 3: he lifts the entire unit.
- 28:23Speaker 1: It's go ahead. It might be Jadensondell the center. I
- 28:29Speaker 1: wasn't gonna go Drake Thomas, so okay, fair enough, Drake Thomas.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Also Josh Job would be in the running for underrated.
- 28:35Speaker 4: And when Drake Thomas, Josh Job and I forgot about Sundale,
- 28:38Speaker 4: So Sunday will be third for me if I had
- 28:39Speaker 4: to rank them.
- 28:39Speaker 1: But yes, all three of those dudes. Think about Jylen Sindel.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Did he anchored a position that had ten count.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Them one zero, ten starters and ten seasons after they
- 28:49Speaker 3: traded Max Hunger, ten different starting centers. Jalensendell comes as
- 28:53Speaker 3: an undrafted rookie from North Dakota State, a former roommate
- 28:56Speaker 3: of Gray's Abel at North Dakota State and he down center.
- 29:01Speaker 3: That is not a question anymore, And for the first
- 29:03Speaker 3: time in a decade, the Seahawks have an answer at
- 29:06Speaker 3: center since trading Max Hunger. Yeah, he's he is unsung,
- 29:11Speaker 3: part of, of course, the nature of an offensive lineman,
- 29:13Speaker 3: his personality. But tell that to Gray's Abel, who's he's
- 29:17Speaker 3: pretty outspoken in glib and yeah.
- 29:21Speaker 4: This one is from the two five three. How about
- 29:26Speaker 4: bringing back Big Walt. Yeah, Like I said, Walter Jones,
- 29:31Speaker 4: you could never go wrong with any team.
- 29:34Speaker 3: M JO six, thank you for going over the Texas
- 29:37Speaker 3: Tech Quarterback article heard the same thing.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I read the same thing to my wife and.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Was like, what, uh.
- 29:46Speaker 1: I hear you? I know ty Ocatta is underrated from
- 29:51Speaker 1: the two five to three.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Yes, well yeah, Greg's like, eh, it's just a short
- 29:57Speaker 3: sample size of eleven games starting. But yes, for a
- 30:00Speaker 3: guy who used to be in the practice squad and
- 30:02Speaker 3: practice squad and special teams player, Yes, absolutely, Pete Metzelars
- 30:08Speaker 3: bring him back.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Two six says yeah.
- 30:11Speaker 4: Greg any Bold predictions for this twenty six twenty seven season.
- 30:21Speaker 4: Did Ourian Price runs for thirteen hundred yards? I mean
- 30:23Speaker 4: I was I was set a thousand. You were like, hey,
- 30:26Speaker 4: Chris bold prediction. You took it three hundred yards.
- 30:28Speaker 1: More thirteen hundred yards. Sheesh, how many touchdowns? Seven ten?
- 30:32Speaker 1: You wanted?
- 30:32Speaker 2: Bold?
- 30:34Speaker 1: That is true.
- 30:35Speaker 4: You put those mice nuts and made them. You put
- 30:37Speaker 4: them in a wheelbarrow and triple one hundred times the
- 30:40Speaker 4: size mice nuts.
- 30:44Speaker 3: I'm gonna find the You can keep going, but I'm
- 30:46Speaker 3: gonna find the text about Army West Point at the
- 30:50Speaker 3: windmir Cup.
- 30:52Speaker 4: If oh bringing okay, no, we already mentioned that. Okay,
- 30:55Speaker 4: here we go. I'd bring back Tyler Lockett. Well, when
- 31:00Speaker 4: it was third down, you could always count on Tower
- 31:02Speaker 4: to be open. That was his thing for quite some time.
- 31:04Speaker 4: Whether it's Russell Wilson, and you know, he was really
- 31:07Speaker 4: good at that.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Two six twenty years ago. When my son was rowing
- 31:11Speaker 3: on the varsity at West Point, go Army beat Navy.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Appreciate that.
- 31:16Speaker 3: My wife and I convinced the Husky rowing program to divite,
- 31:20Speaker 3: to invite Army to the Windimre Cup. Army turned him
- 31:24Speaker 3: down on the basis that they had to defend their New.
- 31:27Speaker 1: York state championship that weekend. I was so disappointed.
- 31:31Speaker 3: I think a showing by Army would have done tremendous
- 31:33Speaker 3: benefit to exposure for West Point out here on the
- 31:35Speaker 3: West Coast.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Go Army, Go Huskies.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Thank you, sir, ma'am appreciate that I didn't know that.
- 31:43Speaker 3: As I heard a book on the Windhamer Cup, I
- 31:45Speaker 3: didn't know that West Point got invited. USTA been a
- 31:49Speaker 3: really good reason why they turned them down. But yeah,
- 31:53Speaker 3: and for NASA's floating. By the way, I didn't even
- 31:56Speaker 3: read any really too many of the text other than
- 31:58Speaker 3: the mice nuts went about Afar appearance. But he is
- 32:00Speaker 3: not going anywhere. He's gonna be a weekly. It looks
- 32:02Speaker 3: like Mondays we're gonna have him on. We're working on
- 32:05Speaker 3: the lineup's going to be pretty cool. We got Brad
- 32:07Speaker 3: Adam coming on tomorrow the Mariners broadcaster. He's gonna be
- 32:10Speaker 3: a weekly guest for us on Fridays. It looks like
- 32:13Speaker 3: premature and saying Daniel Kramer of the MLB beat writer
- 32:17Speaker 3: MLB dot com beat writer for the Mariner's gonna be
- 32:19Speaker 3: with us.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Probably on Tuesday.
- 32:20Speaker 3: So we've got farhun Daniel Kramer, Brad Adam and where
- 32:24Speaker 3: the ages getting started. We got friends and fam coming
- 32:27Speaker 3: back the NFL seasons.
- 32:28Speaker 1: We got.
- 32:29Speaker 3: We got some throwbacks from the show when Chris and
- 32:30Speaker 3: I did it in twenty twenty four. We're just getting
- 32:32Speaker 3: started here on ninety three point three kJ R f M.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Welcome back to the Chris Show. And for us that
- 32:44Speaker 3: we are gonna go laugh because the great Bob Rondo
- 32:47Speaker 3: has just checked in.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Let me just say I am honored that Bob Rondo
- 32:53Speaker 1: was listening to the show, my former travel partner.
- 32:57Speaker 3: With the Best, the Best end of story of the Best.
- 33:01Speaker 3: How Barbara came up with Ian was we were talking about.
- 33:04Speaker 3: Ian was once the voice of the Windomer Cup. I
- 33:06Speaker 3: was one half of the voices.
- 33:08Speaker 5: I was.
- 33:08Speaker 6: I was the finish line voice. Because nothing screams husky
- 33:12Speaker 6: athletics like this guy.
- 33:14Speaker 1: That's true, right, nothing. So describe what you described to me.
- 33:18Speaker 3: You covered the Windowmere Cut, which you remember it's a
- 33:21Speaker 3: two thousand meter course that starts out in Union Bay
- 33:23Speaker 3: along the log Boom.
- 33:25Speaker 1: It takes a while to get through the cut, so.
- 33:27Speaker 6: They cross under the bridge right across the bridge. Yeah,
- 33:30Speaker 6: it's a great course. It's awesome everything about it. I mean, listen,
- 33:34Speaker 6: you've got a daughter that wrote Rose Crew. I heard
- 33:36Speaker 6: you talk about it earlier. It's you know, the young
- 33:38Speaker 6: men and women that are involved in that sport. They
- 33:42Speaker 6: they are to me the equivalent of like a D
- 33:44Speaker 6: three athlete, Like they do it because they love it,
- 33:47Speaker 6: not because anybody watches. They do it just they want
- 33:50Speaker 6: to compete and they want to be part.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Of a team. Six am Rose before the Suns up
- 33:54Speaker 1: in ice. Damn it.
- 33:55Speaker 6: That's what sports should be about at that level period.
- 33:58Speaker 6: I mean, that's just anyway, such great respect for all
- 34:03Speaker 6: the folks that do it, and obviously the tradition here
- 34:05Speaker 6: at Washington is second to none. Sorry, Yale and every
- 34:09Speaker 6: other Ivy League school just as second to none. And
- 34:13Speaker 6: what they've done so for many years as the home
- 34:16Speaker 6: for the Huskies football, basketball, everything else. We carried the
- 34:20Speaker 6: Windimere Cup on KJR on Saturday more than the first
- 34:22Speaker 6: Saturday in May opening day, and for the first couple
- 34:25Speaker 6: of years it was Bob and e Least Woodward the
- 34:28Speaker 6: finish line, and then she had some conflicts and probably
- 34:30Speaker 6: at WNBA or something. So the last probably four or
- 34:34Speaker 6: five years that we did it with Bob, I was
- 34:37Speaker 6: at the finish line on a wireless mike. Bob was
- 34:40Speaker 6: in the tower at the Montlake Bridge with a former
- 34:43Speaker 6: coach and rower at Washington, and they would start the
- 34:46Speaker 6: race as you said in Union Bay. They would take
- 34:48Speaker 6: it all the way under the bridge, and then when
- 34:49Speaker 6: you from that point, you lose sight of the last
- 34:52Speaker 6: fifty meters or so, and their last maybe it is
- 34:55Speaker 6: maybe how long is it two thousand meters, So they
- 34:57Speaker 6: probably lost sight for the final two hundred meters or so.
- 35:00Speaker 6: It was a little bit of it, maybe even more
- 35:01Speaker 6: than that, but it was. And then I would pick
- 35:03Speaker 6: it up and bring it to bring it home, and uh,
- 35:07Speaker 6: open water. Bob Washington is kicking someone's ass again because
- 35:11Speaker 6: Bobers refuses to bring someone here that can compete.
- 35:14Speaker 3: The backstory to that, they brought the Soviet Union the
- 35:18Speaker 3: very first cup nineteen eighty seven, and then they got
- 35:21Speaker 3: swamped and that was about the end of.
- 35:22Speaker 1: That for a while. But I asked him.
- 35:24Speaker 6: I asked him once in one of the brief because
- 35:26Speaker 6: we had to go and meet with him and do
- 35:27Speaker 6: all the prep and all this today today and I
- 35:30Speaker 6: met with it and I said, at the time, Wazoo
- 35:34Speaker 6: had a really good women's crew. And I said, why
- 35:37Speaker 6: don't you bring the Wazoo women's crew. That'd be even
- 35:39Speaker 6: if it's your JV who doesn't matter, Like that'd be awesome,
- 35:43Speaker 6: like making a little apple cups, Like for one of
- 35:45Speaker 6: the races off he didn't want they he was afraid
- 35:50Speaker 6: that they could beat him. And he goes, this is
- 35:52Speaker 6: our event and we're not going to lose. Like, okay,
- 35:56Speaker 6: good to know I'm doing a ww event. So describe
- 36:00Speaker 6: Bob Rondo.
- 36:01Speaker 3: Yeah, great, Bob's smart enough to be in the tower
- 36:03Speaker 3: of the Montlake Bridge.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Yeah, the control tower of the draw bridge, out of
- 36:07Speaker 1: the rain. Well you're out there.
- 36:09Speaker 6: Yes, I'm pissed. I looked at the weather this weekend
- 36:12Speaker 6: and I'm like, what are we doing?
- 36:14Speaker 2: How is it?
- 36:15Speaker 6: Emerald Downs opens up on Saturday. We got Joe Withy
- 36:18Speaker 6: coming on tomorrow and he's like, oh, it's be great weather.
- 36:20Speaker 6: I'm like, that's not the way it's supposed to be.
- 36:23Speaker 6: It's supposed to be rainy and drizzly for opening day
- 36:25Speaker 6: and first day at Emerald Downs and muddy track and
- 36:27Speaker 6: a wet Windomere Cup.
- 36:29Speaker 1: But you're a great event.
- 36:30Speaker 6: So you're in Galoshes and I've been rain gear with
- 36:33Speaker 6: trying to keep our equipment working.
- 36:35Speaker 1: With Terry Ryder injured, you've got to make sure it
- 36:37Speaker 1: stays raw.
- 36:38Speaker 3: And Bob's in the tower of the brand new already
- 36:41Speaker 3: fifty microphone.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Is the actual r draw can you tell?
- 36:46Speaker 5: No?
- 36:46Speaker 1: I can't, Terry.
- 36:47Speaker 6: I'm just trying to get I'm trying to survive right now. Meanwhile,
- 36:51Speaker 6: Rondo knows every rower and every major for every rower
- 36:55Speaker 6: on every boat, you know, all eighty nine kids. He's
- 36:57Speaker 6: like the clock's win right now. She's a you know,
- 37:00Speaker 6: a chemistry major. And I'm like it was but it
- 37:04Speaker 6: was all in all seriousness for me, Like I don't know,
- 37:08Speaker 6: if you know. I started my career driving a being
- 37:11Speaker 6: a production assistant at Como TV in college, and then
- 37:13Speaker 6: afterwards I drove the live truck for a few years,
- 37:15Speaker 6: and then my first real job out out of the
- 37:18Speaker 6: technical side was.
- 37:19Speaker 1: I was a sports producer at Como TV.
- 37:21Speaker 6: And Bob Rano, to me is the most talented television
- 37:25Speaker 6: writer I've ever been around in my life. Maybe the
- 37:28Speaker 6: best pure anchor I've been around. I learned, and then
- 37:32Speaker 6: I think he's the best play by a play guy. Yeah,
- 37:34Speaker 6: and so for me, and he was so good to me.
- 37:36Speaker 6: He was a great mentor to me. Uh, you know,
- 37:38Speaker 6: when I've done things even like the crack and this
- 37:40Speaker 6: year thing. I think of him all the time. He's
- 37:42Speaker 6: just one of the best, and he's you know, he's
- 37:43Speaker 6: a good friend and a mentor and a great dude.
- 37:45Speaker 6: So for me, you know, to do the game, to
- 37:49Speaker 6: do something with him like that on the air, because
- 37:51Speaker 6: I was always his producer with Bruce King, right, I
- 37:54Speaker 6: was behind the scenes, and so actually to do it
- 37:55Speaker 6: on the air was a thrill. So I was a
- 37:57Speaker 6: ton of fun. And but yeah, I think in the
- 38:00Speaker 6: five or six years we did it, I don't think
- 38:02Speaker 6: it was ever dry. And I sat there and I'd
- 38:04Speaker 6: sit there in this hospitality area, this private party with
- 38:07Speaker 6: a bunch of snobby boat people and drinking their mimosas
- 38:10Speaker 6: is you could offer me something I'm not willing. I'm
- 38:14Speaker 6: not wearing Crimson and Gold. I would try to find
- 38:16Speaker 6: something that was at least neutral in color. I wasn't
- 38:19Speaker 6: wasn't the cougar guy showing up, you know. But it
- 38:22Speaker 6: was fun. It's I I just if to me, the
- 38:24Speaker 6: Windimere Cup is the most seattle thing that we have. Yes,
- 38:27Speaker 6: I think it's a really and for someone who grew
- 38:29Speaker 6: up here, and yes, I'm a kug and no longer
- 38:32Speaker 6: root for the Huskies, but did grow up around here
- 38:35Speaker 6: going to games with Husky Stadium in the rain and
- 38:37Speaker 6: in the fall of my dad and stuff. And I think,
- 38:39Speaker 6: but I think the Windimere Cup is a Seattle as
- 38:41Speaker 6: it gets. The Motley Cut is as Seattle as it gets.
- 38:44Speaker 6: It's just a cruel atmosphere out there. And yeah, if
- 38:46Speaker 6: you ever get a chance to go out there, man,
- 38:48Speaker 6: do it. It's it's really good. Remember the Montley Bridge
- 38:50Speaker 6: does go up for like four hours afterwards, though, so
- 38:54Speaker 6: you're kind of hooped if it's like to beat the bridge.
- 38:57Speaker 1: Thing after it.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:00Speaker 6: So but it's it's a ton of fun. And you
- 39:01Speaker 6: wrote a book on it too, so yeah, it's it's
- 39:03Speaker 6: it's a fun week It's a fun weekend round here.
- 39:05Speaker 6: Emerald Down's opening, like I said, winning your Cup two.
- 39:07Speaker 6: So yeah, that's a good stuff. So Bob Rondo, thank you,
- 39:09Speaker 6: thank you for listening. I'm honored listening. Maybe just stumbled
- 39:13Speaker 6: across our show waiting for Ian to come on, but
- 39:14Speaker 6: thank you very much the voice of as I'm honored.
- 39:18Speaker 6: What do you got going today? We're gonna we'll check in, uh,
- 39:23Speaker 6: you know, Sarah's talking baseball coming up at one twenty
- 39:25Speaker 6: today Marriors, what a trip five and one and and
- 39:29Speaker 6: retiring fifty one this weekend five and one fifty one.
- 39:31Speaker 6: They already retire fifty one. That's a whole different story.
- 39:34Speaker 6: And that's a whole different story. We'll get into that
- 39:37Speaker 6: a little bit also. Uh two o'clock. Oh, we're going
- 39:40Speaker 6: to carry the press conference with Jadarian Price at two o'clock.
- 39:43Speaker 1: He'll introductor.
- 39:44Speaker 6: Yeah, you'll be there, so make sure you answer, ask
- 39:45Speaker 6: some questions. I can hear your voice here. This is
- 39:47Speaker 6: for Ian Yeah station.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks, I'm sure Pierson will love that. Uh.
- 39:53Speaker 6: Greg Bell Sports Radio nine three point three kJ R
- 39:56Speaker 6: got a question and then Greg Coast coming up at
- 40:00Speaker 6: twelve twenty full transparency. We had Greg on yesterday right
- 40:05Speaker 6: during a ninth inning comeback. It's good content. So we're
- 40:09Speaker 6: gonna for those of you that may have been I
- 40:11Speaker 6: don't know, listening to a ninth inning comeback with three
- 40:13Speaker 6: runs in Cole Young and yeah, he might be the
- 40:15Speaker 6: best second basement of.
- 40:16Speaker 1: The American League. We'll have that one that twelve twenty today.
- 40:18Speaker 3: So that's and for Neess coming up next for Jessmin
- 40:20Speaker 3: McIntyre and Anderson Hurst. Well, I Anderson was on the
- 40:22Speaker 3: morning show, so he got to go home with.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Bu Ball to baw Ball. Here we go, we got
- 40:25Speaker 1: open water.
- 40:27Speaker 3: He ends up the next Craig Bell the News to
- 40:29Speaker 3: being Christopher km well brad Adam on Tomorrow on Friday
- 40:31Speaker 3: on ninety three point three KJRFM
