- 0:02Good morning.
- 0:02It's good to see all of you here this morning.
- 0:12We've got a chance to go on Wednesday to the Fort Payne Church of Christ.
- 0:17and speak on their summer series down in Fort Payne, Alabama.
- 0:21It was the home of the singing group, the country music group, Alabama.
- 0:26They're from there.
- 0:28But we got a chance to spend time with a brethren down there who I've known since 2014 and do some work with them.
- 0:35And so it was enjoyable ah to be able to do that.
- 0:38We're going to continue our study.
- 0:42on the booklets back to the Bible.
- 0:44We're in the second booklet.
- 0:45We began this lesson uh and this booklet last week.
- 0:50So if you uh have that with you, hopefully you can pull that out.
- 0:54If you weren't here last week, you can go back on the website online and be able to be able to find last week's lesson and go over that material.
- 1:04I encourage you to do that.
- 1:06I encourage you also if you weren't here for the first books lesson, the two lessons that we did on book
- 1:12booklet number one, encourage you to uh go back and watch those as well.
- 1:18The reason we're doing this.
- 1:21is to help train ourselves how to sit down and study with someone about what the Bible tells them they need to do in order to be saved, but not just what they need to do in
- 1:34order to be saved.
- 1:35They need to know why the Bible is authoritative in their lives, what part of the Bible is authoritative in their lives, how God assures them of what commands they must keep and
- 1:48obey, that being those that are part of
- 1:50of the New Testament law, and then what church it is that they belong to when they become a Christian because the Lord adds them to the church.
- 2:00Acts chapter two, verse 47.
- 2:03So as a result of that, they need to know what it is they've been added to.
- 2:08They need to know what that looks like, and they need to know whether or not the thing that they've always thought of as the church is the church.
- 2:16That's where we come into our study this afternoon.
- 2:19oh
- 2:20the church and its makeup in the first section of the booklet and then the organization of the church.
- 2:28We're entering now into the worship of the church, but as we examined this thing, one of the things that we looked at in 1 Corinthians chapter 1 verse 10 was that Paul
- 2:40specifically says by the inspiration of Holy Spirit that there are to be no divisions among those who are in the
- 2:51There are no authorized sex of the church.
- 2:57There are no authorized denominations of the church.
- 3:04Either an individual is part of that which is authorized or he is part of that which is unauthorized.
- 3:12And Paul said that we should, as Christians, have no divisions among us.
- 3:21But then consider as well that the first century church, as exhibited by Paul's greeting in Philippians chapter 1 and verse 1, and as we studied last week, was made up of bishops
- 3:33or elders, deacons, and Christians or saints.
- 3:38That was the organization of the early church, and that
- 3:42is an authorized organization for the church today.
- 3:46As we consider this and continue this study, we're going to notice the worship of the church.
- 3:52You know, one of the things that there's an old saying, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck, all right?
- 4:01When you're looking for the church, if you compare what you see in the Bible to what you see in a church that you're looking at and they match, that's a pretty good bet that
- 4:14that's the church.
- 4:15If you're looking at what you see in the Bible and you're looking at a church that you're evaluating and they don't match at all, that's a pretty good bet that that's not the
- 4:24church.
- 4:26Now, John chapter 4 verse 24.
- 4:29Jesus says, as he is there in Samaria, and by the way, we're not going to turn to all the passages today because we've got like 50 slides to get through, okay?
- 4:37So we're gonna move pretty quick, but take note of them and you've got the booklet to follow along in.
- 4:43John chapter 4 verse 24, Jesus says to the woman at the well in Samaria, God is a spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
- 4:54Must we worship God in spirit and in truth?
- 4:58The answer is yes.
- 5:01John chapter 17 verse 17.
- 5:04As you're going through and studying with someone, you're going to turn to the passage.
- 5:07You're going to remind them because we've been in this passage in booklet one.
- 5:11We've been in earlier in this booklet.
- 5:12You're going to remind them this is Jesus praying with his apostles there on the night before he goes into the garden of Gethsemane and is betrayed.
- 5:21He prays to God the Father, sanctify them, the apostles, through thy word.
- 5:28Thy word is truth.
- 5:31So what is truth?
- 5:32It's the Word of God.
- 5:34Sins we must worship God in truth, must we worship God, or must we worship as God has directed in the Bible?
- 5:43Absolutely we must.
- 5:46Nobody, by the way, misses that question.
- 5:49Nobody has an argument with that question.
- 5:52When they get to this point, yeah, absolutely, we must worship according to the way it says in the Bible.
- 5:59Matthew chapter 15 verse 9, but in vain Jesus says concerning the Pharisees in vain they do worship me teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
- 6:12Is it possible to worship God in vain?
- 6:17Well, they're going to read the text and they're going, of course it is.
- 6:19It says it right there.
- 6:20So, they're going say yes.
- 6:22If we worship God according to the commandments of uninspired men, will God accept it?
- 6:28Now, you're building on the first booklet when you say that.
- 6:32You're building on the fact that they understand that God gave His revelation through the Father to the Son, through the Son to the Spirit, through the Spirit to inspire
- 6:42men, apostles, and prophets in the first century who wrote it down.
- 6:47So you're building on what you've already discussed and studied with them.
- 6:51If we worship God according to the commandments of uninspired men, will God accept it?
- 6:56No.
- 6:57It's not authorized.
- 7:00Luke chapter 22.
- 7:02Luke chapter 22 verses 19 through 20, and he took bread.
- 7:06and gave thanks, and break it, and gave it to them saying, This is my body which is given for you, this due in remembrance of me, likewise also the cup after supper saying, This
- 7:17cup is the New Testament in my blood which is shed for you." So, you're reading that and help them understand that this is the...
- 7:23uh
- 7:24Jesus in the upper room with the apostles?
- 7:27He's instituting this memorial, the Lord's Supper, as we often call it.
- 7:33Did Jesus command His disciples to partake of the Lord's Supper?
- 7:37The answer is yes.
- 7:391 Corinthians chapter 10.
- 7:42Paul, as he's writing to the church at Corinth, says, cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ?
- 7:52The bread which we break.
- 7:55Is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
- 7:57Isn't that what Jesus taught?
- 7:59Yes, it is.
- 8:00The cup is a communion of the blood of Christ.
- 8:07The bread is a communion of the body
- 8:12of Christ focusing our minds on the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.
- 8:20In Acts chapter 20.
- 8:22concerning this same thing, we find in Acts chapter 20, and if you turn to that passage with them and read just a little bit, and the first is before it, you're going to
- 8:31understand what's going on.
- 8:32Paul's traveling through, and we read, upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow, and
- 8:46continued his speech until midnight.
- 8:50When God told the Israelites in Exodus chapter 20 verse 8 to remember the Sabbath, did He mean for them to keep every Sabbath?
- 9:01If they're not sure about what you're talking about, if they're not familiar with the Ten Commandments, because that's where that comes from, just turn back with them to Exodus
- 9:09chapter 20 verse 8 and read it.
- 9:11Here it is.
- 9:13Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
- 9:17When God says remember the Sabbath day, did He mean every Sabbath day?
- 9:23You can ask them, what day was the Sabbath in the Old Testament?
- 9:26They may know, they may not.
- 9:27It's the seventh day.
- 9:29So every seventh day, the Jews, the Israelites were to keep the Sabbath day.
- 9:36When the Christians met upon the first day of the week to eat the Lord's Supper, did they do it on the first day of each week?
- 9:46The answer is yes.
- 9:48Should Christians today eat the Lord's Supper upon the first day of the week?
- 9:54Yes, we should.
- 9:55So they're starting to say, oh, okay.
- 9:57Well, that's interesting because that's not what my church does.
- 10:04We take it once a month.
- 10:06We take it twice a year.
- 10:09Acts chapter 2 verse 42.
- 10:11And they continued steadfastly.
- 10:14This is the early church.
- 10:15This is right after Peter has just preached the first gospel sermon.
- 10:20Three thousand souls have been baptized in water for the remission of their sins.
- 10:24And they, the three thousand and the disciples that were already disciples, continued steadfastly in the apostles doctrine and in fellowship and in breaking of bread and in
- 10:36prayers from the very infancy of the first century church.
- 10:41they were partaking of the Lord's Supper.
- 10:44The disciples continued steadfastly in what?
- 10:47In the Apostles' Doctrine, in fellowship, in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
- 10:52Acts chapter 20, what does it say?
- 10:54They met on the first day of week to break bread.
- 10:58on the Acts chapter 20 verse 48, says they continued in that from the very beginning of the early church.
- 11:04Will we be pleasing to God if we continue steadfastly in the same things that the first century church did?
- 11:12Yes, we will.
- 11:14First Corinthians chapter 16 verses 1 and 2.
- 11:18Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, so even do ye.
- 11:25Upon the first day of the week, let every one of you lay by in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come." Is it God's will that we give as
- 11:40we have been prospered?
- 11:42Yes, this.
- 11:44Are we to make a contribution on the same day that we partake of the Lord's Supper?
- 11:51Yes.
- 11:51oh
- 11:52What day did they do it in the first century?
- 11:54First day of week.
- 11:55What day did they ever take a Lord's Supper?
- 11:57First day of the week.
- 11:58I wonder how often do churches collect money?
- 12:06Once a month?
- 12:08Twice a year?
- 12:10Every week?
- 12:12How did they know to do that?
- 12:15They can get it when it comes to the money.
- 12:17They struggle to get it when it comes to the Lord's Supper.
- 12:20Why is that?
- 12:22is you consider that the command is exactly the same as you come together on the first day of the week, partake of the Lord's Supper.
- 12:34As you come together on the first day of the week, give.
- 12:39Every church can figure it out on the giving, but many of them argue with you about it on the Lord's Supper.
- 12:48Ephesians chapter 5 verse 19.
- 12:51Speaking to yourselves.
- 12:53Now, Paul is writing to the church and he's writing to them about the Christian life.
- 13:00But in the context of the Christian life, he wants them to live a life of spiritual godliness.
- 13:09And as he tells them and instructs them concerning that, he says, speaking to yourselves in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the
- 13:21Lord.
- 13:23Ask the question.
- 13:24Just let them answer it.
- 13:25Are we to sing?
- 13:26Yes.
- 13:28Does this passage mention mechanical instruments of music?
- 13:33No?
- 13:34None.
- 13:36Church historians tell us that the followers of Christ did not use mechanical instruments of music in their worship for hundreds of years after Christ.
- 13:44Now, you're reading that there.
- 13:46If they want to go validate that, they can go look up all the historical references, okay?
- 13:52You're just telling them a statement of fact.
- 13:54Let them prove it.
- 13:56By the way, it's not argued and it's not debated at all.
- 14:00The Greek Orthodox Church, which broke off from the Roman Catholic Church, has never used instrumental music in worship from the beginning of its existence till now.
- 14:10Now, is that an argument for authority based upon what the Greek Orthodox Church does?
- 14:15No, it's a statement of you go back through history and they never started and they broke away from a group that did start, but they never started and the church prior to that that
- 14:26they were connected to had never started.
- 14:28Okay, they never used it.
- 14:31When you attend the worship of the Church of Christ, you will notice that we do not use instrumental music in worship.
- 14:38Just helping them understand when they walk in, if they walk in the door, they're going to not be surprised at all that we're doing exactly what the New Testament teaches.
- 14:48Now, the Evangelism Visualized Booklet is back there and hopefully you have one.
- 14:53There's some pages in here that helps people understand something.
- 14:57The booklet's there to help you to understand how to present this in a way that will help them understand the implications.
- 15:07That which is specifically stated excludes all others.
- 15:12Law of exclusion.
- 15:13If you authorize your child
- 15:17or your husband to walk into the store and buy milk and bread.
- 15:24And they walk out with milk, bread, donuts, and candy bars.
- 15:30Did they do what you told them to do?
- 15:34My wife is all the time after me because she'll send me with a list expecting me to come home with exactly what's on the list.
- 15:41For some reason, additional things make it out of the store on the same order.
- 15:46But if you authorize one thing and then someone goes and adds to it, did they do what you authorized?
- 15:52Or did they do something other than what you authorized?
- 15:56The law is not a book of don'ts.
- 15:59If it were, we would need a truck to carry it around.
- 16:02The New Testament tells us what we should do.
- 16:05What the law says is do and excludes all others.
- 16:09When you see speed limit 65, the officer pulls you over because you're doing 95.
- 16:14Officer, the law did not say I could not drive 85 miles per hour.
- 16:21When the law states 65 miles per hour, it excludes all others that violate that.
- 16:27The Bible must be understood with the law of exclusion.
- 16:30Colossians chapter 3 verse 17 is a good passage for this.
- 16:34Whatever you do in word or deed, would that include worship?
- 16:42Absolutely it would.
- 16:44Do all in the name of the Lord Jesus and help them understand that doing it in the name of means by the authority of.
- 16:53Genesis chapter 6 verse 14.
- 16:54We're going to jump back to the Old Testament not for authority but for examples that this is always the way God has handled things.
- 17:03Genesis chapter 6 verse 14.
- 17:05God told Noah, make an ark of gopher wood, rooms shalt thou make in the ark and pitch it within and without with pitch.
- 17:14Would Noah have sinned if he had built the ark out of metal or mud?
- 17:21Yes.
- 17:22Why?
- 17:22Because God specified what he was to do.
- 17:25Would Noah have sinned if he built the ark out of any other wood?
- 17:29You know, he might have had an entire grove of cedar trees.
- 17:33Couldn't he have just built it out?
- 17:34The cedar trees are right here, Lord.
- 17:36Why do I have to go gopher wood?
- 17:39If Noah had built it out of cedar, would he have violated the command of God?
- 17:44Yes, he would.
- 17:47Now consider this.
- 17:49when you consider vocal versus instrumental music.
- 17:52When God said gopher wood, that automatically eliminated every other kind of wood.
- 17:58When God said sing, that automatically eliminates every other kind of music.
- 18:04God didn't say play the drums.
- 18:07God didn't say play the harp.
- 18:09Did they have harps in the first century?
- 18:11Did they have salt trees in the first century?
- 18:14Did they have trumpets in the first century?
- 18:16Did they have drums in the first century?
- 18:19Couldn't God have said put together a band?
- 18:22Certainly could have.
- 18:23What did he say?
- 18:25Sing.
- 18:26When he commanded one thing, he denied all or eliminated all the others.
- 18:31Leviticus chapter 10.
- 18:33Living in chapter 10, verses 1 and 2, you'll read this with them.
- 18:36uh
- 19:03than God commanded?
- 19:06Yes.
- 19:07Did God punish them?
- 19:09Yes.
- 19:11Is it important to worship God the way HE commands without alteration?
- 19:18I believe Nadab and Abihu would testify yes.
- 19:23Matthew chapter 26, verses 26 through 29.
- 19:27And as they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it and break it, and gave it to the disciples and said, take eat, this is my body.
- 19:35And he took the cup and he gave thanks and gave it to them saying, drink ye all of it.
- 19:39All right, we're back to Lord's Supper again.
- 19:41Because there are things which people get when you connect the things that they get with the things that they're arguing with, they have a hard time arguing with themselves.
- 19:52So, would it be a sin to put jam on the bread to improve the taste?
- 19:59Yes, it would.
- 20:01They won't have an argument with that.
- 20:02Oh, that's ridiculous.
- 20:04No, we shouldn't do that.
- 20:06Would it be a sin to add vitamin tonic or geritol to the fruit of the vine to aid enthusiasm in serving God?
- 20:14You know what?
- 20:15This congregation's a little tired in the morning.
- 20:19Can we just add a little espresso?
- 20:22Just get people going.
- 20:25Would that be sinful?
- 20:26Yes.
- 20:27It's not authorized.
- 20:30Would it be a sin to add hamburgers and milkshakes to Lord's Supper?
- 20:34Everybody's getting a little hungry.
- 20:37You know, y'all might pay attention better if you've eaten something right before I get up to preach.
- 20:44Yes, it would be a sin.
- 20:46another illustration.
- 20:48You can leave it right there.
- 20:49You don't have to use these illustrations.
- 20:51These are helpful if you need help and they're helpful if someone has questions or uh is not quite getting it.
- 21:00We are authorized to use the fruit of the vine and the leavened bread.
- 21:04But we would draw more people with hamburgers.
- 21:08Because sometimes the argument is, you know what, if we just had
- 21:13This, during the Lord's Supper or during the singing, more people would enjoy it.
- 21:19There'd be more people there, right?
- 21:22The argument is people like it, so shouldn't we do it?
- 21:26The Bible does not say, thou shalt not use burgers.
- 21:31That is another argument.
- 21:32Well, people like it, there's one, but it doesn't say not to put burgers on Lord's Supper.
- 21:39Unleavened bread can't add jam for taste.
- 21:43Through the vine, you can't add geritol for excitement.
- 21:47You can't substitute hamburgers and you can't substitute milkshakes.
- 21:51Well, when it comes to the music of the church, it's vocal.
- 21:57You can't add guitars.
- 21:59It's vocal.
- 21:59You can't add pianos.
- 22:01It's vocal.
- 22:01You can't add instruments.
- 22:03When the Bible says to do it a certain way,
- 22:08It illuminates every other way.
- 22:10Okay?
- 22:12Now consider, would Noah have sinned if he had used oak and gopher wood in the ark?
- 22:19Yes.
- 22:21Did God approve of Nadab and Abihu offering a different kind of fire than he had commanded?
- 22:26No.
- 22:27So, sometimes the argument is, but I don't feel like there's anything wrong with it.
- 22:35Proverbs chapter 14 verse 12, there's a way that seems right unto men, but the ends thereof are the ways of death.
- 22:43Jeremiah chapter 10 verses 23, oh Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself, it is not in man that walketh to direct his own steps.
- 22:50If their argument is, but I like it this way, the Bible's already taken care of those arguments.
- 22:59But look at all the people who use instrumental music.
- 23:02Surely they can't all be wrong.
- 23:04Exodus chapter 23 verse 2, thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil.
- 23:12You can also go to Jesus' statement when Jesus spoke about the narrow and the broad way and he said there will be few who find the narrow way.
- 23:23All of these help reinforce it, but you don't have to go...you can go through the booklet and just cover those things, and if they're understanding it, just keep going on.
- 23:32All right, and I'm going to skip through a few of these just for the sake of time.
- 23:36Would Noah have sinned if he used oak?
- 23:40and gopher wood in the ark.
- 23:41Yes.
- 23:43Did God approve of Nadab and Abihu offering a different kind of fire than He had commanded?
- 23:47No.
- 23:48Is it a sin to add jam and vitamin tonic and instrumental music to worship?
- 23:55Yes, it is.
- 23:57Why?
- 23:57It's not authorized.
- 24:00It's not authorized on the first one or the second one or the third one.
- 24:04The name of the church.
- 24:05So,
- 24:06you would kind of draw back, what are we to do in New Testament worship?
- 24:12We're to hear the preaching and the teaching?
- 24:14We're to pray?
- 24:15We're to sing?
- 24:17We're to partake of the Lord's Supper?
- 24:19and we're to give.
- 24:21Name of the church.
- 24:22Matthew chapter 16 verse 18.
- 24:24And I say unto thee, thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
- 24:31Who built the church?
- 24:35Jesus did.
- 24:36Jesus said he is going to build whose church?
- 24:42His.
- 24:43belongs to him, not you, not me.
- 24:45Acts chapter 20 verse 28, take heed therefore unto yourselves and all the flock over which the Holy Ghost has made you overseer to feed the church of God which he purchased with his
- 24:57own blood.
- 24:58Who purchased the church?
- 25:00Jesus did.
- 25:01Whose name should be on the deed?
- 25:04You know, if he owns it, whose name goes on the deed?
- 25:07The person who owns it.
- 25:09Jesus name should be on the deed.
- 25:12In 1 Corinthians
- 25:13In Ephesians chapter 1 verses 10 through 13, a passage which they will have already seen, you're bringing them back to.
- 25:18Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same things and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined
- 25:27together in the same mind and the same judgment.
- 25:29And I just realized that entire text isn't on that screen.
- 25:32So give me just a minute and I'll get there.
- 25:36He says, "'For it has been declared to me concerning you, brethren, by those of Chloe's household that there are contentions among you.
- 25:44Now I say this, that each of you says, I am of Paul, or I am of Apollos, or I am of Cephas, or I am of Christ.'" Is Christ divided?
- 25:53Was Paul crucified for you, or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
- 25:58Is it a sin to name the church after Paul?
- 26:03Yes.
- 26:03How about Apollos?
- 26:05Cephas?
- 26:05Peter?
- 26:07Any other human being?
- 26:09Yes, it would be sinful.
- 26:10If the church were named after Paul, whom would we be glorifying?
- 26:15Paul.
- 26:17If the church were named after a religious act, such as repentance, what would we be glorifying?
- 26:23We'd be glorifying repentance.
- 26:26If it were a sin to name it the Pauline Church, would it be a sin to name it the Lutheran Church?
- 26:34Yes, it would.
- 26:36If it were a sin to name it the repentance church would be a sin to name it the Baptist church?
- 26:42Yes it would.
- 26:44Can you think of any other religious names that are used today?
- 26:48They'll think of Methodist, or they'll think of Mormon, or they'll think of Jehovah's Witness.
- 26:54They'll think of all these different names.
- 26:56The Bible Church, the Church of the Holy Spirit, the Oneness Church.
- 27:03There's thousands of them out there.
- 27:08Colossians chapter 3 verse 17, and whatsoever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.
- 27:21Are we to do all in the name of the Lord Jesus?
- 27:25Yes, we are.
- 27:26Would this include the name by which we refer to God's people?
- 27:31Should we have authority for that?
- 27:33Yes.
- 27:35Romans chapter 16, verse 16, salute one another with a holy kiss the churches of Christ salute you.
- 27:44Do you read of the church of Christ in the Bible?
- 27:48Yes, you do.
- 27:49Would it be wrong to call the church by this name?
- 27:54Now, why are we asking would it be wrong versus would it be right?
- 27:56Because it's not the only name that the church is known by in the Bible.
- 28:02We just read a few moments ago where it's called the Church of God.
- 28:07It's called the Church of Christ.
- 28:08The question is, do we have authority for it?
- 28:10And the answer is, no, it would not be wrong.
- 28:14Would this name glorify the one who built the church and bought it with his blood?
- 28:19Yes, it would.
- 28:20Matches all the things that we need for authority.
- 28:24Hebrews chapter 8 verse 5.
- 28:26uh
- 28:42Was Moses warned to build the tabernacle after God's pattern?
- 28:48Yes, he was.
- 28:49He was told, do it exactly the way I showed you.
- 28:53Must we be careful to build the church after God's pattern?
- 28:58If it was important for Moses to build a tent according to the pattern, then it's important for us to build the church the same way.
- 29:06As we bring these pieces together,
- 29:11They're going to have questions.
- 29:14It's okay.
- 29:15Write them down.
- 29:17Don't die on the hill of their questions.
- 29:25They're beginning to have a frame of reference go, hmm.
- 29:32That doesn't look like what I've always done.
- 29:36that authority from discussion from the last book, it's not what I've always been taught.
- 29:42I've always thought that you just do whatever you believe is right.
- 29:46I've always known preachers to say if you feel it in your heart, then it's okay.
- 29:52And you're telling me we need to actually go by what the authority of the Bible says?
- 29:58And they're gonna start thinking, especially between that study and the next week, huh.
- 30:06You know, there's a few other things that we do that I can't find anywhere in the Bible.
- 30:12Now, caution.
- 30:17It's not enough to have Church of Christ on the door.
- 30:22Because if what happens in the building and what happens in that worship assembly isn't what's authorized, doesn't matter what's on the door, does it?
- 30:32It doesn't matter if the name is authorized if the actions inside the assembly are not authorized.
- 30:42But we also shouldn't argue against a name that's authorized.
- 30:48The church in the first entry
- 30:50in the book of Hebrews is known as the church of the firstborn.
- 30:54Would it be scriptural to refer to the church in the same way that the book of Hebrews refers to the church?
- 31:01Sure would.
- 31:03Would it be authorized to call it the Christians?
- 31:09Well, Paul quite often refers to the Christians in Ephesus.
- 31:14And the church in Ephesus, what if we just, the church in Ephesus?
- 31:17Would that be sufficient?
- 31:19Yes.
- 31:20There are a lot of things that are authorized.
- 31:23We must be sure that what we do is authorized.
- 31:27But here's the thing, who does it belong to?
- 31:31Because the term the Church of Christ is not the name of a group.
- 31:38It's a description of ownership.
- 31:41It is the church that belongs to Christ.
- 31:48And if we take it from being a description of ownership and authority to being nothing more than a denominationalized name, we're wrong.
- 32:03We should be cautious.
- 32:05We should educate and help ourselves understand things like not using terms like, I'm Church of Christ.
- 32:14No, you're not.
- 32:16I'm a Christian that belongs to Christ.
- 32:22And the other reference is just turning the Church into a denominational concept.
- 32:28I am a part of the body of Christ.
- 32:32What if we called it the body of Christ?
- 32:33Would that be scriptural?
- 32:35What if that's what was on the door outside?
- 32:37Yeah, it would be scriptural.
- 32:39You know, in some countries, the term Church of Christ...
- 32:44has historically referred to a denomination.
- 32:47As a result, the Lord's body doesn't use that term in those countries because translated, it would cause confusion.
- 32:55So they use another term that's scriptural from the text.
- 33:01All of that is to point out that when we open the book, we compare it to the church.
- 33:12And if the church matches the book, it's the church.
- 33:17And it doesn't matter what the name is on the door so long as the name is authorized.
- 33:23That involves it matching what's in the book.
- 33:26But if we open up the assembly and it doesn't match what's in the book, it doesn't belong to Christ.
- 33:35It's not His.
- 33:37It's not His authority.
- 33:39Now when you examine your life and you look at your life, you have to do the same thing with your life that you have to do with the assembly of the church.
- 33:50You have to evaluate it against the authority of the Word of God.
- 33:56And if it doesn't look like the...
- 33:59authority of the Word of God.
- 34:01If your life doesn't look like the authority of Scripture, if you're doing things which are in violation of God's law and you're not doing things that He commands you to do, then
- 34:11who do you belong to?
- 34:14Do you belong to Christ or do you belong to Satan?
- 34:19Whose works are you doing?
- 34:22If you're outside the body of Christ this morning, you can change that.
- 34:27Jesus made entrance into the body, the blood, and the redemption that is found in the church very easy.
- 34:35He said, hear the word and believe it.
- 34:38You repent of your sins and confess the name of Christ.
- 34:42And you're immersed in water for the forgiveness of your sins, rising to walk in newness of life, a part of the family of God, the body of Christ.
- 34:56the church that belongs to Christ.
- 34:59If you're here this morning and you have need of that or if you have any need, why not come forward now as we stand and as we sing.
