Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Evans and Second Lady Ushavans are expecting their fourth child
- 0:03Speaker 1: this summer, and some critics are taking the time to
- 0:06Speaker 1: comment on the Second Lady's fashion choices. New York Times
- 0:10Speaker 1: writer Vanessa Friedman decided to spotlight recent pregnancies in the
- 0:14Speaker 1: Trump administration, writing this, if the bear chested muscle mixed
- 0:18Speaker 1: Martial arts fighters of the UFC match that President Trump
- 0:22Speaker 1: hosted on Flag Day where the poster guys for Magazin
- 0:25Speaker 1: Image of Masculinity, then the pregnant women of Trump World
- 0:28Speaker 1: are one half of their feminine counterparts. Ever since Ushavans,
- 0:32Speaker 1: Caroline Lovett, and Katie Miller revealed their pregnancies, their public
- 0:36Speaker 1: appearances have showcased their growing stomachs. Forget the maternity MoU move,
- 0:41Speaker 1: forget body con, this is baby con. The Second Lady
- 0:45Speaker 1: didn't sit quiet, mocking the article with a tongue in
- 0:48Speaker 1: cheek response that reads, in part, now that we know
- 0:51Speaker 1: the political significance of my coral eight dollars seventy five
- 0:54Speaker 1: cents maternity dress from Old Navy, can't wait to hear
- 0:58Speaker 1: what the New York Times has to say about my
- 1:00Speaker 1: elastic waistban pants and compression socks. Wow. What a response.
- 1:06Speaker 1: And the second lady came with receipts, posting a photo
- 1:08Speaker 1: of her eight dollars seventy five cent purchase with a
- 1:11Speaker 1: promo code discounts in all Emily. The most impressive part
- 1:15Speaker 1: of the story is that promo code got her a
- 1:17Speaker 1: three dollars seventy four cent dress that looked beautiful, amazing.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I love it. This reminds me of Princess Diana actually
- 1:25Speaker 2: when she was pregnant with now Prince William, and back then,
- 1:30Speaker 2: especially especially in the UK, it was sort of taboo
- 1:34Speaker 2: to be pregnant in public, let alone or royal and
- 1:37Speaker 2: she wore that gorgeous dress and showcase being pregnant to
- 1:40Speaker 2: the perhaps horror of some stiffer stiff upper lippers, but
- 1:44Speaker 2: to the appreciation of the masses. And I see that
- 1:46Speaker 2: here in a different form. There is no way in
- 1:49Speaker 2: hell that if a Democrat was in the Oval office
- 1:51Speaker 2: there would be any of this snide, snart commentary about
- 1:55Speaker 2: beautiful women who are pregnant. Instead, there would probably be
- 1:58Speaker 2: a celebration of the fact that so many working women
- 2:01Speaker 2: in this Trump administration are pregnant at the same time
- 2:04Speaker 2: and are holding down the fort and doing a million
- 2:06Speaker 2: things at the same time, like every American woman out there,
- 2:09Speaker 2: but this administration just does a really great job of
- 2:12Speaker 2: employing and celebrating them. And I also note that Katie
- 2:15Speaker 2: Miller suggested there that she's noticed that nowadays it's really difficult.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I don't know about this and you know more, but
- 2:21Speaker 2: that she has seen a decrease in wardrobe availability for
- 2:25Speaker 2: pregnant women and that so many, so many labels. Essentially
- 2:29Speaker 2: it's like maybe not cost effective or whatever, in part
- 2:31Speaker 2: perhaps because of the declining birth rate, so you can't
- 2:34Speaker 2: find maternity gear anymore. And I know a lot of
- 2:37Speaker 2: friends that have that problem. They wear their husband's clothes,
- 2:39Speaker 2: or they wear you know, baggy shirts or whatever. And
- 2:41Speaker 2: so beautiful Usha Vance is showcasing her beautiful pregnant body
- 2:46Speaker 2: to the twoe of eight seventy five. I applaud that.
- 2:48Speaker 2: And I really wish the New York Times and all
- 2:51Speaker 2: of these snarky fashion writers would stop vilifying Republican women
- 2:55Speaker 2: and instead celebrating them.
- 2:56Speaker 1: That Katie Miller is exactly right. I mean, I would
- 2:58Speaker 1: search at department stores and there'd be like three items,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and they're like, okay, thanks for the variety, guys, so
- 3:03Speaker 1: she's correct on that, Harris. The title of this piece,
- 3:06Speaker 1: the Politics and the Power of the Pregnancy image, to
- 3:08Speaker 1: Emily's exact point, if it were the Biden era, would
- 3:10Speaker 1: be the true feminist women of the Biden administration.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Yeah, it's really interesting because we live at a collision
- 3:16Speaker 3: point about pregnancy, right. I mean, we've got to pretend
- 3:19Speaker 3: like men can get pregnant. I mean there are a
- 3:21Speaker 3: whole lot of things that are happening around pregnant women,
- 3:24Speaker 3: and particularly those in the right. You live this though,
- 3:29Speaker 3: right in the White House. Carried Blake, and I want
- 3:32Speaker 3: to know your perspective.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:33Speaker 1: So I was on the Trump campaign and then brought
- 3:35Speaker 1: Blake into the White House as basically a newborn. And
- 3:38Speaker 1: it was crazy because I remember crying when I got
- 3:41Speaker 1: the job. I was excited, but I was like, how
- 3:42Speaker 1: am I going to raise a three month old and
- 3:44Speaker 1: go to the White House during COVID all of the challenges,
- 3:47Speaker 1: all of the fears any working mom has as they
- 3:49Speaker 1: go to work with a little one. But I found
- 3:51Speaker 1: myself totally embraced. And it was actually President Trump who
- 3:53Speaker 1: said to me one Saturday night, like, hey, go home,
- 3:56Speaker 1: go be with your baby, Like there's nothing more important
- 3:58Speaker 1: than that. So it's the soft side of the president
- 4:00Speaker 1: you don't see, and maybe that's what made these women
- 4:02Speaker 1: feel comfortable enough to have a child while working for him.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Absolutely absolutely grip.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Well, let me just preface this by saying that pregnant
- 4:11Speaker 4: women's fashion isn't an arena I often veer into. After
- 4:15Speaker 4: reading that New York Times piece, It's like I kept
- 4:17Speaker 4: waiting for the reference to the Handmaid's Tale.
- 4:19Speaker 3: It was just a.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Vicious piece, and ultimately, you know, the reaction has been
- 4:24Speaker 4: the best part, which is the fact that so many
- 4:26Speaker 4: Americans are supporting her and cheering her on when she
- 4:29Speaker 4: was posting the receipts because it's relatable to women. Look,
- 4:33Speaker 4: my wife had two gorgeous daughters. I remember for you know,
- 4:36Speaker 4: those years when she was pregnant. You know they you
- 4:39Speaker 4: women work hard when you're pregnant to find things and
- 4:41Speaker 4: you want to look good. So why can't it just
- 4:43Speaker 4: be applauded across all political lines. I'll also add this
- 4:47Speaker 4: give credit to this administration. This past weekend on Fox
- 4:50Speaker 4: and Friends, we had a massive wall with all of
- 4:53Speaker 4: the cabinet families that had children. There are including Dvance'
- 4:58Speaker 4: as expected seventy two across this administration. That is a
- 5:02Speaker 4: very profoundly pro get pregnant sort of world, and I
- 5:06Speaker 4: think that should be celebrated.
- 5:07Speaker 1: They used the Handmaid's Tale reference during year one of
- 5:10Speaker 1: the Trump administration. The media did so maybe they didn't
- 5:12Speaker 1: want to be repetitive with what they said.
- 5:14Speaker 5: I don't know what The New York Times is doing.
- 5:16Speaker 5: This is silly, and I have said on this couch
- 5:18Speaker 5: I think Usha Vance is an incredible political asset for
- 5:21Speaker 5: her husband. I mean, you know, he clearly I think
- 5:24Speaker 5: is probably running for president in the next election. And
- 5:27Speaker 5: the podcast and her interviews, I mean, I know she
- 5:29Speaker 5: sat down Kaylee with you and others. She and the
- 5:32Speaker 5: response to this was very smart and savvy. And I
- 5:37Speaker 5: obviously don't agree with JD. Vance's politics or policies, but
- 5:40Speaker 5: I do think his wife is an incredible asset and
- 5:42Speaker 5: that matters in politics. When you're running for office, it's
- 5:45Speaker 5: not just you, it's the whole package. And I think
- 5:47Speaker 5: that Usha Vance continues to show her real political savvy,
- 5:51Speaker 5: which is relatable.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I couldn't agree with you more. I think she's a
- 5:54Speaker 1: huge asset for him, especially if he goes into twenty
- 5:56Speaker 1: twenty eight and runs He's got Usha at his side.
