- 1:27Good to see everybody. We got the, we got the for box
- 1:29here at the lycos or box in the wild Lakers.
- 1:32Whoo, I need, I need a tally and seagull salty tonight.
- 1:37Sheldon, the Lakers had to go and win last night.
- 1:40They going to be all happy during this broadcast.
- 1:42Are we still in a happier? We got a long way to go.
- 1:45Happy about that win, but we got a long way to go fuck the world.
- 1:49It's gonna be a really good series, I think.
- 1:52So it is, I hope it wasn't easy. The first series of four time
- 1:56Champion, two-time MVPs in president, has an impressive
- 2:00series lot going on, man, been a while since we all got together.
- 2:04So decided to do that tonight, got a lot of stuff to unpack
- 2:09because I'm things over the last few weeks we kind of skipped
- 2:11over. Some more circular blue, we go
- 2:14on pack some stuff tonight. We're going to pack some stuff
- 2:16tonight. Well maybe Ricky lemonade
- 2:20Miracle child in with some chat tonight so but we got a ton of
- 2:24stuff. We are going to be looking at
- 2:26night. Teen place from the spring game.
- 2:28That seagull is kind of broken down and we've all kind of had a
- 2:31look at second. Third fourth, fifth sixth
- 2:34seventh. Eighth time for some of us and
- 2:37we've got other stuff to unload from a data standpoint on the
- 2:41spring game with shelf in a while here.
- 2:43Let's start with this first, guys, NFL draft was last
- 2:46weekend. Let's give a huge shout-out,
- 2:48congratulations to Tamara Connor BCP alone, DCP alone, exactly,
- 2:55on this very program, just a few short weeks ago and I think for
- 3:00some people, it surprised me, I was out buying a shed on
- 3:04Saturday when he got drafted. I think a few rounds higher than
- 3:08most people think, well, you think show, Yeah.
- 3:12I mean it probably little bit but, you know, he's like a
- 3:14versatile guy can play multiple positions, kind of like a Swiss
- 3:18army knife in a secondary and just like overall just a smart
- 3:22solid food water like he doesn't, he doesn't make a lot
- 3:24of dumb mistakes. So, I mean, I, you know, in
- 3:27hindsight, like you can quite a team with a guy like that.
- 3:31Almost like this. Almost like if I'm a Titan fan
- 3:34and a couple of years ago we drafted Caleb Farland.
- 3:38Shout out to Caleb. I was fucking livid.
- 3:42I knew what was going to happen and I'm thinking for my NFL team
- 3:47for what we need, don't make that pit.
- 3:51But me being a Virginia Tech. Fan takes me back to you.
- 3:55If you are a DB and you come to Virginia Tech you got a shot.
- 4:01She did that name, still carries some weight.
- 4:03If you are a decent db2, a good DB at Virginia Tech.
- 4:10It may take you around higher than you were supposed to go.
- 4:14So not say anything, bad about your mark because like, like
- 4:18Sheldon said, he's a great football plays, very smart, very
- 4:21versatile. But if you are a DB, we got to
- 4:24start selling. We got to start back selling
- 4:26that, man, you got opportunity. Yeah, I mean that's that's big
- 4:30because, you know, I think people had like a late fifth
- 4:33round grade on him is I think General consensus was late 5th
- 4:37and he kind of goes in that just just on the back half of the of
- 4:42the fourth there. So, I mean, that's a pretty big
- 4:44for him. And I mean, you know, and to the
- 4:47world Champs and antenna to the Chiefs going around early as no
- 4:51big deal, man. That's a little bit of extra
- 4:53extra change in the pocket, man. Yep.
- 4:55More do for him. And you know what?
- 4:57The coolest part did y'all see? See, the Chiefs, what they
- 5:00tweeted out like the day after he had drafted.
- 5:03You know, that he to get flagged on that perfect coverage.
- 5:06He did he got flagged on for your clothes and they were like,
- 5:10that was the kind of sold them. Like what Sheldon said he's
- 5:13versatile. He can also play special teams,
- 5:15not just play special teams but Excel it special teams even
- 5:19though they're trying to get rid of that in the NFL and you hate
- 5:22to see it because so many guys live there, but, you know about
- 5:26shout out. Just to a few more guys.
- 5:27I know Silas got sign. And Dax is getting a chance with
- 5:30Jacksonville same with blue and blumrich with the Bears and
- 5:34cheese collectively. So, you know, guys getting the
- 5:38shots, that's what we all want to see.
- 5:40But now let's start here because this is fun, this is the, this
- 5:44is where y'all get to learn to know us.
- 5:46I'm going to start in order here, Brian with the fourth pick
- 5:51in the draft. How did you feel about that pic?
- 5:55But then the remainder of the Colts draft.
- 5:58You know what? I really like the pic
- 6:00considering who already went off the bullet.
- 6:03Because to me, there was two ways to go about it.
- 6:06You're either going to get the most polished kid that has some
- 6:09question marks in terms of size and durability.
- 6:12That's Bryce, young or you take a shot with the highest ceiling
- 6:17player at the position in the draft and that's Anthony
- 6:20Richardson. And so if you told me that at
- 6:23for Bryson was off the board and we took a our I'm happy with it.
- 6:29You know, I've seen this guy, he looks good.
- 6:33Athleticism is off the charts. Seems to be High football IQ
- 6:37guy. The question is just going to be
- 6:39Ken some of the throwing tools, catch up with everything else
- 6:43but I just think it's a for what we needed and where we were
- 6:47picking. I think it's a home run and the
- 6:49rest of the draft was just kind of a by the books filling the
- 6:53needs with the best available. I know we traded down a lot,
- 6:56kind of leading off. We're in Day 2 and then we kind
- 7:00of got into the groove there we got a got a Lyman in there, we
- 7:04got a quarterback, got a tight in, got another interior
- 7:09lineman. So I think the draft overall was
- 7:11good for us. We really kind of fill the needs
- 7:13we needed and I think got good value everywhere.
- 7:16We pick All right, tally. I'm going in order here by the
- 7:22way. You always.
- 7:23Do you pick first your team pick next.
- 7:25Yeah, I know you were. I know you were good on Thursday
- 7:30night when I texted you, are you?
- 7:32Yeah, I mean, we needed a tackle.
- 7:34I didn't know what Taco we were going with.
- 7:36I like the kid from Ohio State. I guess the best out of the
- 7:41tackles their way in, but of course he wouldn't be there and
- 7:44we picked at 11:00 so it with him being gone out.
- 7:47They made a good pick up from the kid, from Northwestern.
- 7:52He was an All-American and he's just a, he's a good football
- 7:57player, you know, if you go watch his tape and stuff, and
- 7:59it's hard to evaluate Lyman for people who don't look at it.
- 8:02But, I mean, he's a good tackle, which is what we need.
- 8:06I mean, we got Derrick Henry, which is a house of a running
- 8:09back in the backfield, but if you don't have a line to protect
- 8:13the running game and you don't have people to throw the ball
- 8:15to, you don't have Anybody to give him a break and we got some
- 8:19trouble. So again, we had to get rid of
- 8:21some people just through free agency and things like that.
- 8:25So, takes me to the next Peak. I wasn't too happy about the
- 8:29quarterback pick, just because I'm not a huge Levis person.
- 8:33Like, I hope he does well, but it's just, I get the same
- 8:38feeling that I did when they picked up Malik Willis, like, I
- 8:43just, that's a personal thing. I just was not happy with At
- 8:47Peak family to be. I feel like we dodged the
- 8:50bullet. Then we kind of hated you the
- 8:52grenade. I would have much rather like
- 8:54try to go get somebody in free agency and use that pick on
- 8:58somebody else. May be a wide receiver or
- 9:00something, but again, that's what I get paid the big bucks,
- 9:03okay. Hope the kid goes on thing.
- 9:04Kills it. He just reminds me too much of
- 9:06Tannehill. Like they look too much similar
- 9:09to me for what they do. I hope that they prove me wrong,
- 9:14but we did pick up some other people in That I was personally,
- 9:20you know, wanted to get a couple of other running backs but after
- 9:25watching and looking at the running back that we got from to
- 9:27line, he saw it, he can catch the ball out of the backfield,
- 9:30which is definitely a good thing.
- 9:33Should be a good change of pace. If they have Derrick Henry stood
- 9:36there next year and bring him in.
- 9:38So overall most people giving us a A to B plus on draft, so I'd
- 9:48probably give it about a B+ on our draft, very high Sheldon,
- 9:53which I this is the first time I found out, he's a commie saying,
- 9:58respect on that. I know you were we message you.
- 10:02You were like we need it, we needed a cornerback.
- 10:04We got a cornerback in the first round rest of the draft anybody
- 10:08like in particular Yeah, they actually double loaded on the
- 10:13cornerbacks and get the name in a second George chakiris.
- 10:16Martin was there was their second pick.
- 10:18So they took a free agent at the end of this
- 10:31re-sign him. So 1 summed up there, I think it
- 10:34was a little bit more of a defensive oriented draft just
- 10:36because, you know, kind of got the weapons on offense with
- 10:39McLaren. Curtis Samuel Gibson running
- 10:41back and then Logan Thomas, even the can really stay healthy at
- 10:45tight end and then they're going to roll this and how
- 10:47quarterback, which I've got some reservations about, but that's
- 10:50just the plan right now. So they took a couple I'm into.
- 10:54So I got some insurance there. So overall I'd give it like the
- 10:57the like a solid job. No, it no one's going to really,
- 11:00you know, it's not eye-popping or anything but I think they
- 11:03added to throw in you too. Good deal.
- 11:07Good deal. Alright, let's move on then
- 11:12tell. He's got a quarterback that puts
- 11:13mayonnaise in this coffee now. So that's really all we need to
- 11:19try to hit and Tavia left us to go play with that kid.
- 11:21So I'm still a little salty about that even more.
- 11:38Oh, you're talking about the rest of the graph.
- 11:40It's we did. Okay, drafted one, tight end in
- 11:43the third round. That should win the seventh and
- 11:45wife of the seventh. Round of should have went in the
- 11:47third, but I mean you never will get value from drafting your
- 11:52kicker at all. No, in my opinion, let alone in
- 11:56the third round. I mean beyond the like one or
- 11:59two, best in the league. Everybody's more or less kind of
- 12:04in the same thing ballpark unless you're at that kind of
- 12:07bottom one or two it. And that's the point everybody's
- 12:11making, is he now has to be an All-Pro for 10 years, yeah,
- 12:16right to pay the debate board, so whatever.
- 12:19All right, well, before we get into further Football Talk,
- 12:22we've got to flip it over to Hoops.
- 12:24Not only because Shelton's back, but because there's been a lot
- 12:26of stuff happening since the last time we talked anywho
- 12:29because we were focused on Spring Game and all that stuff.
- 12:32So, Sheldon. Let's start with this.
- 12:35It came. I felt that as a shock.
- 12:37I think these guys felt it as a shock to Grandma's, seal moves
- 12:41over and goes to the Italian League.
- 12:43It's his Italian citizenship and all that, is this something that
- 12:47was on your radar that you think this potentially could happen or
- 12:51it hits you at a left field like it hit us.
- 12:54Yeah, I was actually surprised. I thought he was coming back.
- 12:58I just felt like, you know, he seemed like a kind of a team.
- 13:00First guy not to suggest that he isn't, but it just seemed like,
- 13:04you know, the Vibes are pretty good.
- 13:05And that's why I heard from some of the Insiders at nowhere than
- 13:07I do. So, I was a little bit.
- 13:09Obviously, Couture coming back. That was, you know, expected.
- 13:13But yeah, I think it's gonna be interesting to see because SEC
- 13:16is going to kind of loop reload their front Court.
- 13:18Had to discuss, you know, and they can survive without the
- 13:21silly, but at the same time, you look at it.
- 13:23Especially towards the latter half of last year.
- 13:26I mean that's that's a good amount of production got to
- 13:28replace so it's not going to be it's going to be a tall task for
- 13:31sure. Yeah, I mean he's definitely he
- 13:35came in. He was you know Ed moments last
- 13:39year was kind of the the main scoring threat for the Hokies
- 13:43game to game. It's going to be a big loss.
- 13:46I mean obviously I think you got we got some guys coming in.
- 13:49That can maybe potentially replace some of that back
- 13:52committee but you're not going to have a singular player coming
- 13:56in, that's going to be able to kind of do offensively with
- 13:59bacilli, was able to do it points last year.
- 14:02No, they're like if you look at the stats of guys, of his
- 14:05stature around like the high, major basketball like there are
- 14:08very few guys who are as productive offensive, they all
- 14:10around his bacilli was a, my opinion.
- 14:12I thought he'd got a little bit too much flak from some hands.
- 14:15He is a really really talented offensive player defense.
- 14:18Kind of is what it is. He's not, that's not really his
- 14:21game, but he was extremely efficient, and so that's going
- 14:24to be missed for sure. Yeah, when you talk about, you
- 14:28know, basketball and a lot of fans that are just normal fans,
- 14:32casual fans like it is very hard to be a two-way player like me,
- 14:37being a like a fan and watching ad last night.
- 14:39Like that's a two-way player. We talk about a defensive player
- 14:44you get like Jared Jackson jr. That's going to give you my 14
- 14:48points and guard the rim for you and stuff.
- 14:50It's hard to have that same player.
- 14:52Do what Brazil? He's able to do so you can't
- 14:55have it both ways. A lot of Times like you got
- 14:58great offensive player, a great defensive play or so and because
- 15:02you're exerting a lot of energy on both ends that are full of
- 15:05the, of the court. So it's going to be interesting
- 15:08to see which way they go, you know them, maybe getting some
- 15:11more talented guards. Are they all rely on?
- 15:15You know, a big man to do what he does, or are they going to go
- 15:19deep? It's going to be, it's going to
- 15:20be fun to watch, I guess. So, I'm hoping my young
- 15:24surprises. Me and does Great things this
- 15:27year because I need to see you. Yeah, I think it is going to be
- 15:31a big thing. We've got to see and obviously
- 15:34you just kind of led into it a couple seconds ago.
- 15:36Shelton with we needed to replace him with someone bigger
- 15:40and lo and behold they get Robbie Baron out of the portal
- 15:43from Northwest and he's an RV, a kid played at Tucker and he
- 15:47played it, your Alma maters Chief rival Collegiate here in
- 15:52the r-va, you know, 669 200-plus pounds, Pounds and I look at the
- 15:58stat sheet in like it's, he's like that Progressive play.
- 16:01He got a little better every year at Northwestern, right?
- 16:03Little better, never big jump but always just a little bit
- 16:07better but you probably looked a little bit more detail.
- 16:11What is he bringing in along with you know what mckaela long
- 16:15and Tyler nickel? How do you feel overall about
- 16:20the three transfers that came in Freddie sot.
- 16:23So talking about burn, first of all, like you said, he's got
- 16:27experience. He was a four-year plan,
- 16:28Northwestern started all 34, 34 games last year, averaged about
- 16:33seven point five and five on the glass and put, let's is not
- 16:37super efficient from to, you know, that's, that's not really
- 16:40his game. He's a prototypical stretch for
- 16:42so you can light it up from three for being 69.
- 16:45He's a really good three-point shooter about 35% and also very
- 16:48good free-throw shooter as well. So, you know, he's a guy that
- 16:52has Question you get a pretty low usage rate.
- 16:55Meaning you know he's not involved in the shooting in the
- 16:58shooting as much as a guy like Justin mutts and doesn't play
- 17:03quite a few minutes typically that you would see from you know
- 17:06a standard mi kyung, mi kyung big man, he's got a pretty slow
- 17:10release so he's more like a catch and shoot three pointer.
- 17:13So he's not going to have huge volume.
- 17:15Four threes, like maybe bring a game or so, but he converted a
- 17:18clip. So I think overall it seems
- 17:21you're the facing. Obviously, that's a check.
- 17:23Work and a guy that's experience and can bring some size.
- 17:29You shot a brand protect, you know, the kind of block a ton of
- 17:31shots but you know, obviously there's a lot more defense than
- 17:34just blocking shots. So overall, I think it's a
- 17:36pretty good pickup and you mentioned, tell nickel and other
- 17:38guys. Got some sighs.
- 17:39I expect him to be, you know, a backup.
- 17:41Obviously provides the minutes at that for petition and then
- 17:46Makai long. I vindictive into this quite as
- 17:49much at all demanded. But I do know he's you know, six
- 17:51foot seven. Pretty lengthy and Athletics.
- 17:54I think he brings a dimension of athleticism and length.
- 17:57Team that is certainly sorely. Yeah so again you lose a 20 plus
- 18:08points core and bacilli like you said, we're not going to be able
- 18:10to replace it with just one player.
- 18:12So the combination of these three with some younger guys
- 18:15stepping up, especially you know, not I mean knock on wood
- 18:21after this happens tomorrow when people start getting in the
- 18:23portal, not losing players to the portal after Mike Jones
- 18:28left. Left.
- 18:30I mean I think that's a really big thing.
- 18:34Definitely because you loved me. You can say it.
- 18:37Everybody was expecting right on by Italy.
- 18:40Everybody was expecting rise to be already out, but it looks
- 18:44like he's still there still working.
- 18:46No, it's a long time before the season starts, but I mean, the
- 18:49longer he's there, the better, so he's got the spot, he's got
- 18:54the, he's got what he's needy, what he needs to play him, and
- 18:58you're playing in the ACC, it's not much, another school can
- 19:03offer him, you know? So I think we're going to win,
- 19:06you know. And nobody really knows that so
- 19:08yeah, yeah hopefully hopefully he stays and contributes.
- 19:13Yeah because I mean looking at you know Marilyn obviously being
- 19:16the the particular offer here in place.
- 19:19I mean if that if a spot opens up there I feel like that's
- 19:23really the only big sway other than a true kind of blue blood
- 19:27that would step up and give him a spot on their roster because
- 19:32you like you said, planning, The ACC playing big-time college
- 19:36basketball. I feel like that's that's that's
- 19:38the a good draw, and he seems to be comfortable in the system
- 19:41that Mike young runs. So other than that relationship
- 19:46with Mike Jones, I don't really feel like there's a whole lot
- 19:48that will kind of change that up.
- 19:52And I mean, I mean, we said here a year ago and we look at all
- 19:58the transfers and stuff and we saw how it all worked.
- 20:01We were like, now, we're going to be a much better team this
- 20:03year, right? Right.
- 20:04We're going to get into tournament easy and it just
- 20:08things just didn't click, and I know, I know Hunter going down
- 20:12those Pig, but it, like things didn't click.
- 20:14So it's one of those things where it's like the expectations
- 20:16last year up here. I think for all of us they're
- 20:20slightly more tempered this year than they were last year.
- 20:24So is it one of those things where we're going to get
- 20:27surprised? I think that's a big question.
- 20:29We all last because last year we were like, me, everybody's back.
- 20:33We got Grant, we saw him. Not only, you know, we saw his
- 20:36numbers at Wright State but we saw him in the tournament,
- 20:39right? In that tournament game, like he
- 20:41lit it up and it's like, okay, this guy can play against P5
- 20:44competition. So it'll be interesting to see
- 20:46how it holds on thing is always injuries.
- 20:53You know what I'm saying? Like right now you're talking
- 20:57NBA playoffs. And you know, what injury
- 20:59changes, the whole dynamic of a team.
- 21:02So when you talk about what Virginia to in his no cop out
- 21:06because y'all know how I feel about the basketball team and
- 21:09Mike young, I want them to win, you know, I don't want the, you
- 21:14know, shaking hands and kissing babies no more.
- 21:16They got to produce, you know. So, with that being said,
- 21:20though, I can't ignore that. You only have You know at the
- 21:24most 10 10 rotational players and if 2/3 of your players go to
- 21:29Aaron who are you know big parts of your offense and defense,
- 21:34you're in trouble and you know what?
- 21:36The tour went down and then rice went down.
- 21:39You know, having those big injuries to not a very deep
- 21:42team. It's kind of like what it's
- 21:44doing from the stock to me, like some people's all will be fine
- 21:47and they'll be able to do this, but now that's a big deal,
- 21:50especially when you look at the defense ticket or plays Because
- 21:54you have that defense wins championships.
- 21:56You can score and he can scores with everybody knows he can
- 21:59score but it's underrated to what he does.
- 22:02On a defensive part of the in getting that one stop against
- 22:06certain teams at that pivotal time.
- 22:08We just wasn't able to do it last year.
- 22:09So I feel like this year expectation should still be I do
- 22:17want to say as high but still pretty high but it's comes down
- 22:21to Andrews because rice has a lot of potential you know along
- 22:26with the people who are mean Padula Couture coming back then
- 22:31bring it in some of the transfers like they can
- 22:34definitely still have a great team or a very good team.
- 22:38It just comes down to how healthy do we stay in my
- 22:40opinion? It's true.
- 22:42All right. Yeah, now in rice, red rice for
- 22:44a full season knock on wood. Health - all right now where my
- 22:52expectations for the men's team are tempered.
- 22:55My expectations for the ladies. Teams are right here.
- 22:58Like seriously like through the roof and they got three young
- 23:03ladies from the transfer portal. I don't know much about them.
- 23:06Sheldon, I know you got some infos, we're going to definitely
- 23:08let you leave this. We got Matilda from Michigan
- 23:12State. A lot of my shoe from the
- 23:14Minnesota and Olivia someone. From Wake Forest, give us a
- 23:19little bit on each. How are they going to help this
- 23:21team? Which was a final four team up
- 23:24going into the fourth quarter against LSU, this season.
- 23:29Yeah, education is so sure. I think it is part of this
- 23:34prominent one. She's a 6-foot guard / for just
- 23:37to pop lazy. The three little bit started,
- 23:40going to games last year, for Michigan State, 12 points, three
- 23:43rebounds. But her string splits were
- 23:45absolutely the charts show she taught Forty percent, overall,
- 23:4839 percent from three, and then 95 percent free.
- 23:51Throw line like this cross. Not missing free throws.
- 23:54So, but mostly, you know, you focus on that three percent from
- 23:57three, her plea to shoot. Threes is greatly helped or
- 23:59something. Because you, and looking was
- 24:02lights out. Georgia and more lights out on.
- 24:04Also, very high volume of attempts.
- 24:06That's going to open up a ton of spacing for those Kelly to do
- 24:08anything in the paint. So I think that's part of the
- 24:10biggest thing for for ech about 70% of our field goal attempts
- 24:14are from, it's kind of a game like, she's She can take that, I
- 24:18guess. Attacked invest a little bit.
- 24:20So, but she's really kind of like a, you know, a three and
- 24:23detailed player and the you got a llama show 6424.
- 24:28It started three teams last year at Minnesota, another player
- 24:32who's, you know, has some experience average 14 points per
- 24:36game. Last year, she does not shoot
- 24:38through, she's making in score. I think her value is going to be
- 24:41in providing some some rest for Arc Italy because she's going to
- 24:46give us some day. Depth at that poor position.
- 24:50So that's a big addition. And then also, you got Olivia
- 24:52cemil, he mentioned, another forward, three games started
- 24:55last year, at Wake Forest, 7.1 7.6 rebounds pretty solid
- 25:00splits. Overall she, I would suspect,
- 25:02she comes off the bench, kind of liking that Geezer Greg type of
- 25:06role, should provide some defense and, you know, more
- 25:08experience again. So if you look at this, these
- 25:10three editions in total, we see is one tons of experience and
- 25:15all these ladies can score And also just, you know, forward
- 25:18that plate. That's one thing that always
- 25:20needs to make sure they have is for to have to listen and get
- 25:22some rest. I think with Carly wentzel
- 25:26talented young redshirt freshman coming up the pipe for next
- 25:30year. Tank will have some depth for at
- 25:33the guard spot little bit more than they did last year.
- 25:34So a working a little bit of a break, but because I think it
- 25:37was probably playing about, you know, seven minutes, especially
- 25:40in the stretch run last year. Like there were some games where
- 25:42I don't think she came out at all.
- 25:44So just having a play like that, that can score and Is everything
- 25:47we've heard about when so is she is an absolute dog.
- 25:49So I think we're gonna get we're going to get your shine a little
- 25:52bit more next year. So like I said last year's team,
- 25:57if they had any Achilles heel it would have been depth this year
- 26:00a case has been kind of restocking that a little bit.
- 26:02So I think they're going to be a lot deeper than they were last
- 26:05season and that's, that's gonna be big.
- 26:08Yeah, like you said, if the one thing that they struggled with,
- 26:11especially as we saw down the stretch against LS, she was
- 26:13having some death, it may be being You're not quite as
- 26:18physical as well as she was getting away with that game.
- 26:21So getting more depth is only going to help that situation and
- 26:25put them in a better position to kind of close games out against
- 26:28that higher level competition which we saw some earlier in the
- 26:31year where they were struggling to kind of close out with some
- 26:33of those, those higher level competition.
- 26:35And then obviously, they went on that big run when everything
- 26:39kind of clicked for them up until the final four there.
- 26:42So, I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be interesting to
- 26:46see how all these Pieces kind of mix in and what McKinney Brooks
- 26:49is able to do with them. So yeah, so I think what we've
- 26:55got here is obviously again. It's improving the team, I love
- 27:00the way you talked about the young lady shooting 40%.
- 27:04What the Michigan State transfer because I mean we know Georgia
- 27:10and Kayla can shoot the lights out and you put another for I
- 27:12mean that just I can only imagine teams defense is where
- 27:16it's like we need to go our kid lie.
- 27:18We can't bleep and double kill anymore.
- 27:19Why? Because we got three people that
- 27:21can shoot 40 percent from three if we give Look, they're going
- 27:24to knock them down and free throws everything over, 95
- 27:29percent free, throw shooting. And now like, yeah, like, she
- 27:34can take it off the dribble song, right?
- 27:35Yeah. She's not just that shooter.
- 27:37And it's gonna be like time, just like just go after the
- 27:38basket, go after the basket, please, please, it's your free
- 27:41two points. 32 points. Exactly.
- 27:44All right. So we're going to close the door
- 27:46on Cassell Coliseum and we're going to walk back over to Lane
- 27:49Stadium boys. Because, yeah, the spring is a
- 27:53couple. Weeks ago, we had an episode and
- 27:55the portal has been flooded ever since.
- 27:58So, I'm going to kind of take this room by room.
- 28:01Y'all give me shock, not shocked.
- 28:03But let's start with the quarterback room.
- 28:05First, I'll let you start it out.
- 28:08Tally Taj Bullock and Devon, Farrell hit the portal, any
- 28:11shock, and he not shocked and he, you wish they'd stayed not
- 28:15sharp. I mean, I liked Devon fair.
- 28:17I didn't like him. We're number seven, but you know
- 28:20how, I like their referral from what I've seen of them.
- 28:24But not shocked because you don't need six people.
- 28:26In a quarterback room, you don't need five people, you know, you
- 28:30do. When you're when you're scrapped
- 28:33on what you have, as far as scholarships, you can't have 65
- 28:41people in a quarterback room so you know all the best to the
- 28:45kids but not shocked. Yeah I'm right there with you
- 28:51tally. Just looking at Bullock and
- 28:54Pharaoh it seemed like their time was up.
- 28:58Yeah, the younger guys coming in, you had pop coming in, he
- 29:00had whiskey coming in and then you had drones that came in
- 29:03which came in as being the guy, competing for the starting job.
- 29:09That's your for right there. The kind of put, you know,
- 29:14Bulacan Farrell on the spot where if they didn't, Beat out
- 29:19pop Watson which it seemed like they had for that kind of that
- 29:23number three spot heading into heading into the fall, it was
- 29:29time for them to look at some other options.
- 29:32So I mean best of luck to them but it definitely not shocked.
- 29:36In terms of expectation there, what I like about what I've seen
- 29:41with the team and you know what, the transfers and things like
- 29:45that, but the last regime, it's Everybody, who transfer?
- 29:49We got a horror story. You know what I'm saying?
- 29:51Somebody lied to me. Somebody did this to me?
- 29:55Somebody kick me in the nuts. It was always some bullshit.
- 29:58Like we got some kind of freakin House of Horrors.
- 30:02Every time somebody left. I really think that the coaches
- 30:05have been honest with these kids and say, hey, this person is
- 30:09performing better than you. We may need to help you look
- 30:12elsewhere, and that's football. You know what I'm saying?
- 30:15I think that they have been, I think prize been Very honest,
- 30:18and candid in his delivery when he talks to the media.
- 30:23And I think again, I'm not in the room, but all the locker
- 30:27room, I think that the delivery that he's giving, the players
- 30:29has been the same. So it looks like these kids have
- 30:33grown out of competed and when the chips fall where they may
- 30:36looks like sometimes time for people to move on.
- 30:38So I hope everybody lands on their feet.
- 30:41You know, sometimes kids got a, you know, they got to move down,
- 30:44you know, sometimes you gotta move down to Two or, you know,
- 30:49maybe not a power five school to get your shot.
- 30:52So I love to see. I love to see kids go somewhere
- 30:55else, and get a shot unless you're hitting Hook.
- 30:57When you go to Tennessee, and you get drafted a show you her
- 31:00Junior Tech. I liked, I was crying.
- 31:03I was so happy for the kid, but I was crying.
- 31:07It was part of Virginia Tech High.
- 31:39Kind of a tough one for you to swallow them and dialing, right?
- 31:41So why you fell in love with several years ago?
- 31:44Love is Route. Running gone as well as
- 31:47Christian Moss, Christian Moss, not transferring out as what
- 31:50I've read. What?
- 31:51I heard, but he's just effectively no longer on the
- 31:54team and we know that happens sometimes.
- 31:57But I mean, that's another one of those rooms, right?
- 32:00Is like, 14 people in there. Yes, you need to carry a lot of
- 32:03wide receivers, but 14 just absurd.
- 32:07And we talked about that a little bit last time because we
- 32:09talked about our who's going to be.
- 32:11Yep. You know, that that four and
- 32:13five, you know, maybe Six Wide Receiver, the steps up and then
- 32:16we kind of saw Ari. We had Tucker step up, we have
- 32:19Steven Gosnell step up. So So you know guys that were
- 32:23smaller players on the team. Last year took some big steps in
- 32:27the offseason on top of us, bringing in three solid
- 32:29transfers at the position. So guys start getting pushed
- 32:33down the down the line there. And, you know, unfortunately for
- 32:36for down, right, I mean injuries kind of derailed his development
- 32:42and he's a guy that could never just stay healthy long enough to
- 32:45improve and climb the depth chart and then you got Christian
- 32:48Wallace, who's kind of been banged up.
- 32:51Not as serious as right? But kind of off and on banged up
- 32:54throughout his time, as well. And it just seemed like he
- 32:58couldn't kind of kind of find a spot in that new rotation.
- 33:02Seems like he's a guy that loves Virginia Tech.
- 33:05If he's if he's going to stay Virginia Tech and kind of stay
- 33:09on just have a football retirement there, but, you know,
- 33:14sad to see those to go. But, you know, it's definitely
- 33:17difficult when you have that many mouths to feed in the
- 33:20receiving room. You have similar similar
- 33:25sentiments from me as well. It was a, you know, darling,
- 33:28right. Never really got to see him do
- 33:30much because of injuries Christian Moss, was kind of
- 33:33looking forward to him on the, on the field, but it all comes
- 33:38down to what have you done for me, lately?
- 33:40You know, they hate to say it that way, but when you go and
- 33:43you see, you know, Holloway producing and getting better and
- 33:47you see Gosnell take a next step and, you know that he's a guy
- 33:51that can play at this, at this level, I mean he was at North
- 33:54Carolina and he comes here and he has some production last year
- 34:01so it's you can get lost in the shuffle and it's another thing
- 34:06that frontale is bringing in like if you look at our recruits
- 34:12from last year those wide receiver kreutz are are legit,
- 34:17you know Aiden green already been there and getting some
- 34:20praise and In him on the field and getting some Bayern.
- 34:24You know, it's deep in that position man.
- 34:27And if you ain't it's like Ricky Bobby's.
- 34:30If you ain't first you're last like makes no good.
- 34:33It doesn't do you any good to be seventh or eighth on that depth
- 34:36chart because you're probably not playing you know we're going
- 34:38to looking at that in later but you would Latrell sudden getting
- 34:41behind the yeah. The secondary in that game even
- 34:45though yeah didn't hold it in. But I mean he was out there
- 34:48showing what he can do. So it's I'm fine, man.
- 34:52I think I think all of them are competing, you know, watching
- 34:55this team and watching the transfers and think, I think
- 34:57everybody's competing. So I need to see some of that
- 35:01competition turned to some W's in the fall.
- 35:03There you go. Absolutely absolutely.
- 35:07Got a couple more things to go through.
- 35:08He will hit the defensive back, /, linebacker room next, where
- 35:11we saw Jalen Hoyle, who would effectively moved from safety
- 35:15over to Sam during the Spring? Elijah, who's cornerback will
- 35:19see his, I think we, This is highlight unfortunately up there
- 35:25for a little while and cam Johnson of those three.
- 35:28I think the first two doesn't shock anybody I think cam
- 35:31Johnson, shocked everybody. But Brian you know we talked
- 35:34about it a couple weeks ago. You shall not be a chance to
- 35:38listen. Brian was like Ken Johnson
- 35:40didn't look good out there. He looks like he got worked.
- 35:44He looks smaller. He was still listed 165 pounds
- 35:48it, right? At six foot tall, he'd been in
- 35:50the G over a year and had no significant developments with
- 35:55his body, right? That's a big thing to me.
- 35:59You see most guys get in within a year.
- 36:01They're up 15, 20 pounds, they look Cut.
- 36:03They look trip. They look stronger and it wasn't
- 36:07that way with him. I think it shocked us because we
- 36:09saw him on the field and we felt like we could, that could be
- 36:11something there. But now, I look at that room,
- 36:15I'm a little worried about the room will hit in just a moment
- 36:18here. But you know, Anything to add to
- 36:21any of those three guys. Any of y'all.
- 36:24It's like, am Jonathan from what I seen.
- 36:28I can't have a significant injury last year.
- 36:30Right? What was earlier in the year?
- 36:32He didn't have a knee injury or something.
- 36:34She has some kind of injury that Kim Jung.
- 36:38Kim Johnson had somebody missed, I thought he missed some weeks
- 36:41because of a tweak. I don't think he was out.
- 36:44Okay. Well, I was thinking he has some
- 36:45kind of injury, but yeah, he definitely looked small, man.
- 36:50If you're if you're working on getting bigger and getting
- 36:53longer he was, he was small and no significant gains.
- 36:58So kind of getting pushed around in the spring game.
- 37:02You're getting pushed around in the spring game like we go and
- 37:05we play whoever pick somebody you know I'm saying it's not
- 37:10going to be good so I was surprised to see him in the in
- 37:15the transfer portal but I can understand why because I mean
- 37:19again Talking about the wide receivers BB is going to be
- 37:22similar. Like, they're bringing in a lot
- 37:24of kids that are very kind of a lot of these kids already.
- 37:28Kind of have some college bodies.
- 37:30I mean, if you go look at most Phillips, he is.
- 37:34He can step on the field and play somewhere said, yeah, you
- 37:38can put it in the same way. I was I was just looking at it
- 37:52like looking at km skill. Set is pretty much similar to
- 37:56how it was when we first came in I mean he's good when he's in
- 37:59man cover just follow a band. Chase a man he's fine he gets
- 38:03lost in zone coverage and if he's got to press against a
- 38:07bigger receiver he's in the struggle to.
- 38:09So he's at some point we got other guys that can do these
- 38:14things better or at least as good kind of felt like you know,
- 38:19the spring game. Is his chance to say alright I
- 38:21can lock down that for spot spot in that corner back room and he
- 38:26just did not do enough to do that and I feel like he's going
- 38:29to take an opportunity to see if he can be that for some other
- 38:32team because I just don't think he's gonna be able to do it in
- 38:35this room. So yep.
- 38:37Shall not as not as big of a shock as I thought.
- 38:39Tell them anything on his injuries.
- 38:41Last year I saw you and we said that was like, you jumped in and
- 38:44did he get inch? I don't recall him.
- 38:46Yeah. The, I just looked at that, he
- 38:48did have an injury and October so I don't know what the extent
- 38:53that was. I just figured injured, it's
- 38:55harder to put on weight. I will say given the fact that
- 38:59we have a nutrition center now if you're not gaining weight
- 39:02with that thing and they're like, that's that's and we got a
- 39:06new Strength staff. Like that's yeah, receivers.
- 39:11I'm someone who believes that you can kind of see potential
- 39:14right away. And I think in the situation
- 39:17when, you know, you Just didn't have any any surprises in there
- 39:19so it's not too surprising in hindsight obviously hurt.
- 39:22You know, there's a lot more town in network and can work
- 39:25with. Yep, it's funny you mentioned
- 39:27like the, you know, the weight and stuff and it's like - or
- 39:32came in. I think it what 165 to last
- 39:34year? He's up to 180 already, right?
- 39:36Yeah. Like you said, like you just
- 39:37said, Sheldon, there's that nutrition center.
- 39:39That is literally building a plan to get the kids, bigger
- 39:43stronger faster but there's no development.
- 39:45Okay, are you following the plan?
- 39:48So very interesting one. Last piece that I think we said
- 39:56it, we've said it in chat, we've said it each other on fax
- 39:59messages. There's going to be one that we
- 40:01didn't see coming. I thought cam Johnson was it?
- 40:04But again, looking back, listen to what Brian and them said and
- 40:06then seeing the wait, it wasn't him, but Callie unfortunately,
- 40:10one of your BMF is in the p0rtal and yeah.
- 40:15Sorry, moisten the defensive end.
- 40:18And it's a place where we need death.
- 40:23I don't know what to say about this because he had some okay
- 40:26moments in the spring game. So, you know, I'll let Sally
- 40:33lead on this one since this is boy.
- 40:35Well, I mean, again, big body watching him on the field.
- 40:40He was a big guy and I'm just going to say when you're moving
- 40:46people in positions that you need help in.
- 40:50Hopefully you're doing that because you're bringing somebody
- 40:53else in. So I'm hoping it is say I'm
- 40:56hoping that it's a means to an end and then going hey we got
- 41:01something coming. You're going to have to slide a
- 41:04little bit and sometimes people don't want to do that.
- 41:07So we'll see you next couple days or flashes from Burgos than
- 41:11I did from voicing in terms of yeah.
- 41:13Feels. No.
- 41:15Now obviously moistens got the body that you want at that
- 41:18price. Yes.
- 41:19So if that that's where it's going to be a loss, I think long
- 41:22term is that you know, where was his ceiling, we're not going to
- 41:25get to realize that but you know, based on his body type but
- 41:30I know with defensive in a lot of times, if you don't flash,
- 41:33surely you're not going to flash, right?
- 41:35We're not we're not going to see it, so it's really hard to kind
- 41:38of see if he had already kind of reached more or less his
- 41:42ceiling. And he's looking for some other
- 41:44opportunity or what. But like I said, I saw a little
- 41:47bit more from Burgos than I did for moist in, in the spring game
- 41:49in terms of kind of, you know, that second line there.
- 41:53But yeah, I'm definitely with you tally.
- 41:55And that hopefully, there is a plan in place to not only help
- 42:01with the depth because obviously, this this creates a
- 42:04depth problem regardless of where moist and was in terms, of
- 42:09ceiling and ability. But if we can do something to
- 42:11raise the Overall top end of that room as well and, you know,
- 42:16then and by default create depth Downstream.
- 42:20Some guys that may have already been in that that, you know, two
- 42:23or three role in the spring. That's going to be even better.
- 42:27All right, Brian. But we're going to get into
- 42:29where we feel. We should add.
- 42:30But Brian. Did you get what I sent you?
- 42:34Yeah, I did. I did he can you pull that up
- 42:36real quick? This is actually a good test run
- 42:38for what we're going to do in a few minutes here with the take.
- 42:41Yeah yeah I'll I'll put it on. Who we all need to see this
- 42:43voice. Y'all need to see the from I
- 42:47All-American. True freshman defensive back
- 42:51sending out a little cryptic tweet here.
- 42:55I mean watching LeBron Magic About 22 minutes ago, his job
- 43:10just got a whole lot easier. We know y'all there in a lot of
- 43:14people visiting right now. Now I'm old I'm not going to
- 43:17speculate names but I'll ask y'all, he's saying his job.
- 43:22Just got easier. Where do y'all a?
- 43:25Where do y'all think we should add and could this be one of
- 43:28those positions? Go ahead.
- 43:30Whoever wants to lead. I mean, I'll leave room.
- 43:34Yeah, I'll let these if you if he's saying if a cornerback is
- 43:37saying his job got easier. That means he's not having a
- 43:41cover as long as what I'm thinking, that's like a football
- 43:44fan, that means you're getting some pressure on the quarterback
- 43:47so that'll be bringing in some defensive line and some
- 43:51defensive end pressure again. Got moisten your left and then
- 43:55you got a cornerback Santa's job got easier.
- 43:59He ain't talking about playing with another cornerback.
- 44:01I don't think, you know, Now and one of those is rushers was in
- 44:06Blacksburg last night. So so I think some pictures on
- 44:12Instagram. If y'all if y'all are listening
- 44:15you better start doing some detective work like we do over
- 44:18here. Not just that tweet anybody
- 44:34who's a Twitter person in the twitterverse.
- 44:38There has been a lot of a lot of movement in the last hour or so
- 44:43from the staff and not not just it wasn't normal stuff.
- 44:48You know it started maybe last night.
- 44:50I think fontelle retweeted a this is home tweet from like
- 44:55December from Lee. No no you know back in December
- 44:58December 7th. What is that?
- 45:00But you never know man. Man, I will say these coach,
- 45:04these coaches are working, you know, I'm excited that they are
- 45:07excited. So it seems like they genuinely
- 45:10like recruiting, you know? And once we start Landing a
- 45:14couple of these big fish and when I say big fish, I'm just
- 45:17saying, even if it's a person is filling a need for us, that's
- 45:20been have to be a four or five star, but if he's feeling the
- 45:23need and he's able to get in and play.
- 45:25That's fair. That's, that's big for us.
- 45:27So, once we start putting people in places and start letting
- 45:32those people Deuce we're clean. Just gets that much easier.
- 45:35If you get a legion is, come in from ODU and have a great year
- 45:41and gets drafted, and he walks across there with his Virginia
- 45:46Tech highlights. I mean, you're not just gets
- 45:49easier, so he's even easier. Okay.
- 45:52Do y'all agree with this that defensive line is one without a
- 45:57doubt with defensive line edges, one, the all agree that some
- 46:02Buddy, on the interior offensive line is right there or somewhere
- 46:08like that. Yeah, probably with Johnson
- 46:12leaving, obviously that fourth spot is up for grabs in the
- 46:16corner, back room that we've got to get one defensive back and
- 46:19it's not necessarily saying that that DB room is not good.
- 46:23That DB room. Is you argue between them the
- 46:26linebacker and what's the, what's the better of two?
- 46:29The first ever you're very good. It's just there's a lot of
- 46:32Behind them in. Brian you pointed out time and
- 46:35time again. Last year when we did recap
- 46:37fucking got tired at the end of games because there was nothing
- 46:41behind anybody. When the fourth quarter came
- 46:44guys, were gas in the second are because they literally had
- 46:47played every snap in the game because was nothing behind them.
- 46:50Got to have you got even worse when strong wind down, obviously
- 46:53you got to have done, Got to have death man.
- 46:57So, that's that's what we need. That's what we want.
- 47:01That's what helps you win, football games.
- 47:03And most of the time you expect to have a little bit of a
- 47:06drop-off from their first to your second team, you know, in
- 47:12your rotation supposed to be a little bit of a drop-off, but if
- 47:15you can keep that drop-off minimal, then you can win some
- 47:19football games that way. So hoping that's what we're
- 47:22headed to. Let's hope.
- 47:23Let's hope. All right, let's hit real quick
- 47:25here because we've got to we've still got a lot to unload but I
- 47:29want to go real quick. We got two commits.
- 47:32We did not discuss the first was Tyler Mason running back down
- 47:35there in North Carolina. Three star top 20 players in the
- 47:39state of North Carolina. / 24/7. I mean I mean, it's closed.
- 47:49You know, I know Mount Airy, is a pretty good program down
- 47:51there. We're tapping into the the Frank
- 47:54Beamer motherland. I mean I'm going to trust that.
- 48:01Yeah. I'm gonna trust the staff
- 48:02because for me, just me watching.
- 48:04I watched a little bit of it for him and I did what I like to see
- 48:09is when I watch something I'm, can he come in and jump,
- 48:13somebody who's here? You know what I'm saying?
- 48:16I don't watching his film, I don't know that he could, I
- 48:19don't know that he's better than anybody that I've seen in that
- 48:23room right now, but again, he's that was a Jew.
- 48:28Junior feel, you know, I've looked at some feel like, oh,
- 48:30wow, I feel like he can play right now.
- 48:32So I didn't really move the needle for me, but I can
- 48:37understand, I can understand the taking the commitment.
- 48:41We have another one of his teammates committed as well,
- 48:43right? Yes, we do.
- 48:45We got to get to the big 64 215 pound as soon as I said 64
- 48:49couple weeks ago. Tally.
- 48:50That's good enough, right? He's told her that we had.
- 48:53That's good. Yeah.
- 48:54Look at look at in Tyler mais. I mean they run that split Veer
- 48:57Mount Airy. So.
- 48:58You get a lot of those downhill. Dive runs that Veer, and he's a
- 49:06guy that's going to get you some good yardage.
- 49:08He's got a little bit of Wiggle, but I like how he finishes his
- 49:11runs, but he doesn't have a whole lot of like Elite
- 49:13Breakaway speed. So I don't see a lot of home
- 49:16runs out of him, but he's a guy that can kind of work between
- 49:19the tackles pretty well and get some solid yards.
- 49:22Yep. Like I said, it's only as Junior
- 49:23tape. So we know how guys developed
- 49:27and There's also reasons why they're taking guys and it maybe
- 49:31he ain't. I mean standard running back.
- 49:34One more commit to talk about that would be Emmett laws 6-foot
- 49:38260 pounds and this is what I love to hear.
- 49:42DeMatha Catholic and Hyattsville Maryland.
- 49:45When you start going to get that school and shaking his head
- 49:48because he knows right, you start getting players from.
- 49:51DeMatha says something Elijah Brooks pays off.
- 49:54Pretty quickly. And We all said it right before.
- 50:00We got on here tonight, he reminds us of a typical Virginia
- 50:04Tech defensive tackle. He just did.
- 50:07I mean he kind of looks like one of the Hopkins twins clones.
- 50:11Yeah. Does he play like them though?
- 50:13He plays like of give me four more likely when I mean he's got
- 50:17he's got good motor. He's a guy that can he plays
- 50:21bigger than his size is so that that's always what you'd like to
- 50:24see. You know whether that translates
- 50:27to Power 5 level, we'll see but I like the way he kind of gets
- 50:34in the lane and creates a little bit of Havoc.
- 50:38There could probably work on his hands a little bit but that's
- 50:40pretty much every High School defensive lineman look at they
- 50:48don't getting a school. That's cool.
- 50:50That's all I'll say you know DeMatha High School I mean we
- 50:55had what that's what I would love is from to, right?
- 50:58Uh-huh. Yeah.
- 50:59So, you know, again in relationships is what pays off,
- 51:03man. You know what I mean?
- 51:05Because if you are what we are, and you take a chance on some of
- 51:08these kids, especially now that the transfer portal is how it
- 51:12is. It's like you take this kid, he
- 51:15doesn't work out, there's a transfer portal, you know, no,
- 51:20no, no harm, no foul, it didn't work.
- 51:22We bring somebody else here and you go find you some to go not
- 51:25saying that's going to happen with this kid, but I'm just
- 51:27saying with a school like that, if you take a player from there,
- 51:32every year, One year, you're going to hit a big player,
- 51:37you're going to get a big player whether it's they just are
- 51:41underrated and you develop them well or they're just high rated
- 51:45and they come in and produce. So yeah, you keep taking them
- 51:48out the kids, why not all the time all the time and she had
- 51:52anything on any of these guys before we move over to your
- 51:55segment, sir. Now I got nothing other than
- 51:58let's get that that DMV pipeline going.
- 52:01I mean, we tried it with basketball.
- 52:02We got Mike Jones. Got, you know, it's obviously
- 52:05but if we can get a DVD pipeline, I think that's, that's
- 52:08pretty good. Excellent, excellent.
- 52:11Well, let's flip it over to you man.
- 52:13You have kind of did some diving into the spring game statistics
- 52:16and you want to talk about a few things so Sheldon the floor is
- 52:20yours. Yeah, so just, you know, not too
- 52:24much here, but I think the biggest thing I noticed is your
- 52:26spring game. Is mainly the anchor explosive
- 52:28plays obviously last year. Spring game was pretty rough on
- 52:33the offensive side which was a pretty big fork, Shadow work of
- 52:36the ensuing offensive season for us.
- 52:39You look at the data, The Maroons add 16 plays of 10 plus
- 52:44yards and five plate, 20 million Birds.
- 52:47It wasn't quite as good as the white team, but they still have
- 52:499 of 10 plus yards. So a lot more explosive plays
- 52:52obviously with, you know, baseball to be back.
- 52:55I really like his ability to make guy Smith and space.
- 52:58He's got some good cutback ability as well.
- 53:01I noticed that, you know, they were getting some swing passes
- 53:04early in the game to kind of get guys out, you know, East End
- 53:07that, you know, get involved in space which was pretty good to
- 53:13go on Felton, he's got some burst, I noticed that watching
- 53:15the game and then Brice Tibbetts.
- 53:17Well, he averaged five point three yards per carry, I think
- 53:20our average last year for rushing was 3.1 the so it does
- 53:24include sacks might be a little bit higher but That's that's
- 53:28pretty rough I think last year. You know I don't I haven't
- 53:31checked our explosive plays numbers from last year.
- 53:34My assumption is they were not great.
- 53:36I've noticed a chart success rate overall was but but you can
- 53:40immediately tell like this team has more Playmakers.
- 53:43And I think if they can get at least you know those, those 10
- 53:46plus 20 plus yards. That's going to go a long way to
- 53:50helping sustain drives because you can't really rely on this.
- 53:52I think at this juncture is something offensive line, you
- 53:55can't really rely on them to To create like 12-14 a drives.
- 53:59That's just not like, I don't think that with the all, find
- 54:02the way it is right now. So if you can kind of get those
- 54:04big place to kind of, You Know, lesson, how many pages you have
- 54:07to score that's going to that's going to be big time.
- 54:12Yeah, when we were looking at it me and tell you were there at
- 54:15the game, I mean we saw consistently for offensive
- 54:19movement especially obviously on the maroon side.
- 54:22But you know for the white side, if drones wasn't getting sacked,
- 54:26they were moving the ball. It was just drones was getting
- 54:28sack and they couldn't run the ball because that offensive line
- 54:31was there was such a discrepancy between the white offensive line
- 54:33compared to the marine officer one.
- 54:36But, you know, when, when they had time, they were making some
- 54:39things happen in the passing game.
- 54:42It's nice to see more, you know, you talked about the explosives,
- 54:46please. We didn't see those kind of
- 54:49intermediate, those 15 to 20, 25 yard gains a whole lot.
- 54:52Last year, he was either a whole lot of Dink and dunk and then
- 54:56the occasional deep ball to Caleb Smith that would go here,
- 55:0040 or 50 yards. But there wasn't those
- 55:03consistent plays. That kind of get you down the
- 55:06field quick. Yeah, where you can kind of mix
- 55:08in the running game, one or two times.
- 55:10And all of a sudden you got 15 to 20 yard Games back in.
- 55:14Well, if we talk about its core. Yeah, if we talk about it too
- 55:16much, we'll get Curtis back on his soapbox.
- 55:20You can't In the format that we had to spring game is so hard
- 55:24because we don't have a deep team, you know, and you can't
- 55:27see everybody do what they can do for real.
- 55:32You know what I'm saying? Cause it's just, you just don't
- 55:34have enough. So, again, spring game, we got
- 55:37to go back to it. I know, Curtis could run a whole
- 55:39segment on what we might can do a little bit different.
- 55:43Yeah, but it's like that's why we, that's why we get ready for
- 55:46the season because when you see all of The Playmakers on offer,
- 55:51The side of the ball on the offense.
- 55:54It looks like we are in a much better position than we were
- 55:57last year again. I don't know where that falls
- 55:59into the season, but I know that we're better than we were last
- 56:03year on offense and I know that we have people that they're
- 56:06going to have to game plan for. But yeah it's what Shelton just
- 56:10said though the amount of explosive explosive plays most
- 56:14people think explosive played. They think 25 30 yards.
- 56:17Thank you for categorizing that Sheldon.
- 56:19The saying it's 10 plus is considered an Explosive play,
- 56:22right? But it's not only listen,
- 56:24Marines numbers are great. The white numbers though, you
- 56:28said 10:00, right? Or nine plays of ten yards more?
- 56:31Yes, we're at nine places 10 plus yards for the white team in
- 56:35think how bad that offensive love was, right?
- 56:38And thank of and then everybody go mentally last year to the
- 56:41white team. They're nothing.
- 56:45No, I mean nothing. So what you're saying is, if
- 56:49we're kind of doing like a comparative analysis, The
- 56:52season, the spring game last year, everything has taken a
- 56:55very, very good step regardless. Regardless, you know, if you
- 57:03have to be able to find that stat, what our explosive plays
- 57:05were last year. There weren't many, there
- 57:07weren't many like, like you'd, like Brian said, it was either
- 57:09ding conduct occasionally, we did a shot but you can't win
- 57:12games like that. You came and by Sheldon giving
- 57:17us this info about having, you know, over 15 plus plays.
- 57:21Combined on both sides of 10 plus yards and having 5 of 20
- 57:25plus yards. That just tells you that the
- 57:28needle is moving better for the offense.
- 57:32I'm not concerned about the defense.
- 57:34I'm not. Well, people like, well, they
- 57:36gave it up and you like, but you know what?
- 57:39I saw this defense last year. Keep us in games, keep us in
- 57:45games. A, a competent offense wins,
- 57:51three of those games. I know tally, you sitting up was
- 57:53Italian, which one of y'all texted me that said state was an
- 57:56anomaly Brian? I said, yeah.
- 58:15And then you got to understand, I don't know if I mean, they
- 58:17were pretty bad off that game. If you go back and look at if
- 58:21you go back and look at our office and production that game,
- 58:24it was nothing in the first half.
- 58:26It was, it was really a nice stretch in the third quarter.
- 58:29Yeah. It was nothing in the first half
- 58:31and then we came out and we hit right with like a tight end
- 58:35dragon or something. Like first play of the third
- 58:38quarter and it's like, okay, we got something.
- 58:40So, yeah, Brian go. The hill.
- 59:12Is now, I thought his route running was was very, very good.
- 59:17He's very Krista way. The way he stands his raps and
- 59:19make sharp like that rock running goes a long way in terms
- 59:22of generating separation, we combine that with good passing
- 59:25Concepts you guys open. So it's not just about the speed
- 59:28or think that lettuce is MM. It is how do you, how do you
- 59:31attack the Deep? How do you run your routes?
- 59:33I thought, guys don't get a really good job.
- 59:36I hate to be that guy but I gotta say it.
- 59:39You got a white wide receiver. That's a great while.
- 59:42Run. I was in there with me.
- 59:45Hey Wes, welcome. That's kind of what I'm looking
- 59:48at in like, you know. Yeah, something wrong with man,
- 59:52even on some of the plays that he didn't Baldwin thrown to him,
- 59:55he had a like, he showed a route truth, you know, it wasn't just
- 1:00:00a go, you know, my me like he really did.
- 1:00:04He really was running Chris Rock so and like Sean said, he did a
- 1:00:09good job of influencing the the guys in the secondary to.
- 1:00:12Yes. You create that separation.
- 1:00:14That's going to be big for us because that's what we struggle
- 1:00:17with a lot last year was separation.
- 1:00:20We have so many, I mean, I feel like in the passing game, of
- 1:00:22course we got to get this offensive line, right?
- 1:00:25But in the passing game, I feel like we have so many different
- 1:00:28weapons to use. We have some deep deep stretch,
- 1:00:32the field type guys, we have some intermediate type, guys, we
- 1:00:35have some possession receivers. We have a couple of tight ends
- 1:00:38that can be mismatches and catch the ball, they have some
- 1:00:41blocking tight ends. This is some stuff that could
- 1:00:44get fun, man. You know, saying we can look at
- 1:00:46this thing, it's half, empty, or half full.
- 1:00:48I'm always half-full type guy and I and offense, man, watching
- 1:00:54the stagnant offense that we had last year and just seeing what
- 1:00:57I've seen so far, it's like, I'm excited.
- 1:01:00How can you not be excited? I'm almost say this now, before
- 1:01:04I kick it over to break the way the team has been restructured
- 1:01:08offensively Is this is this is Taylor Bowen.
- 1:01:13If we improve significantly based on what we've done in the
- 1:01:16offseason, the wide receiver room, the quarterback room
- 1:01:21potentially improving the offensive line.
- 1:01:22Maybe in the next couple weeks here it's his show.
- 1:01:25If we still make it if we still rank it 100 or below without
- 1:01:31seeing significant improvement with our eyes hiss, he's going
- 1:01:35to be absolutely doused with gas and liquid.
- 1:01:39Yeah. A'ight with saying that before
- 1:01:42we get into the tape because we got 19 plays to show you all.

- 1:03:40We good, we good. Yeah.
- 1:03:42I like that. I like the way you set that up.
- 1:03:45I get the tape ready here guys. So the first place we're looking
- 1:03:48at and let me get this shared here.
- 1:03:52Well, first thing we're going to look at is I'm going to set it
- 1:03:56at while Brian's pulling it up. Effectively the first four plays
- 1:03:59we're going to be looking at here are run plays and basically
- 1:04:02how we look like dog crap last year to this year.
- 1:04:07Well just what we saw at the game itself, overall Run game
- 1:04:13looks better. So let's Don't play one run.
- 1:04:17Yes, a play one. We got here.
- 1:04:20Coming out you got shotgun trips right.
- 1:04:23You're going to see a little read-option, we're going to see
- 1:04:26Bryce Duke with the long run here.
- 1:04:30I'm gonna go ahead and play it here.
- 1:04:31We'll look at it one time and then we'll run back through it,
- 1:04:32slow. Yeah, that little wiggle to
- 1:04:41wiggle wiggle. Let's look at some of the
- 1:04:45blocking here. Mrs. This is the maroon line so
- 1:04:50you got Parker shit. Smash Brothers and Brody
- 1:04:54Meadows. Along with think that says that
- 1:04:59cold picket. Yeah, Cole.
- 1:05:01Pick it on the bottom there. Yeah.
- 1:05:04And I mean what you like to see here, you get some, get some
- 1:05:06good double teams in the middle. Get some movement.
- 1:05:09You see Parker getting up to the the next level here, going to
- 1:05:13wall off that Mike and I like the angle that that Bryce takes.
- 1:05:17Are you gets really tight to where to where the light the
- 1:05:21were the pushes before been in the bag that gives them the
- 1:05:24opportunity to get past that D? And that's kind of slow playing
- 1:05:28The Zone read here. And I mean good good good job.
- 1:05:34I'll be a very elusive at the second level he's running by
- 1:05:37some guys guys here. Really good move against Jalen
- 1:05:40Jones in the open field and then finish his run.
- 1:05:43Pretty good here. Nice little finish their done
- 1:05:47pretty big run, good run good wiggle and he did what you're
- 1:05:52supposed to do, right? There's one guy beat that guy.
- 1:05:58It was the edge and it was the outside linebacker crashing,
- 1:06:01beat him and like what you said, how he got tight?
- 1:06:04He was literally on. I think that was, he was on, Bob
- 1:06:07kicks ass. Yeah, he was literally on Bob
- 1:06:10Shakes as Yeah, that's what you got to do there, because the
- 1:06:15way, they were slow played, like some defensive ends will attack
- 1:06:19the mesh point, you know, some, depending on who's the
- 1:06:23quarterback is, will automatically crashdown.
- 1:06:25They want to take away the Run, make the less athletic of the
- 1:06:30two backs. They are keep it.
- 1:06:32In this case, it would be the quarterback.
- 1:06:34In this case they were slow playing, it kind of making the
- 1:06:37quarterback make a decision, they're good choice to give it
- 1:06:40and good run there by Rice Duke. All right, so we got from a
- 1:06:46second play here. Yeah.
- 1:06:48So as play I'm pulling up now here that's Take a look.
- 1:06:56It's a little closer to the goal line.
- 1:06:58This is in towards the end of the first quarter.
- 1:07:00We already got two on the board. Try to punch it in a third.
- 1:07:03One shotgun double Wing. We got a split Zone chance black
- 1:07:09for the score here. This is really good run.
- 1:07:12So I'm going to play it through one time.
- 1:07:14Let you guys look at it. Clean it up.
- 1:07:18Have it up on the screen. Hang on, let's try it again.
- 1:07:25Here we go. Running back here.
- 1:07:34Good move there in the hole. Again, kind of similar to what
- 1:07:38we just saw with with Bryce Duke on the the safety.
- 1:07:41Coming up to fill it. A good kick out here by
- 1:07:47business. Did you guys know Cole Nelson?
- 1:07:51I didn't clean it up. Yep, we got some solid double
- 1:07:54teams right here and right here. Watch the run to about black.
- 1:08:01Watch it right now. He's in the hole.
- 1:08:05He doesn't go straight at the guy.
- 1:08:06He cuts right there? Yeah, because that's that up a
- 1:08:09little bit. That's all.
- 1:08:13I've been told I was told today. Chance, black sucks at
- 1:08:16everything just What is that?
- 1:08:40Split Zone concept go back. We peek at it real quick and
- 1:08:45they'll is that Johnson Johnson 12.
- 1:08:49Yes, Johnson is 12. Jesus Christ Yep.
- 1:09:02Small. Very small, very small.
- 1:09:06He's got ran over, but go back to the go back to the Box.
- 1:09:10You charge dropped it. I was going to go back to where
- 1:09:13effectively, I'll tell you when just so you can right there.
- 1:09:18Okay, there's your split Zone concept.
- 1:09:20Brian is mentioned several times.
- 1:09:23Explain what that is Brian because we're seeing is
- 1:09:26basically they're doing this in one.
- 1:09:30Split Zone does is your blocking back against the guy you would
- 1:09:36normally read in a, in the read option.
- 1:09:39So, instead of leaving him on black, you're actually kicking
- 1:09:43him out with the tight end coming across the formation
- 1:09:46which essentially changes the the gaps for the defense.
- 1:09:50So you can create some confusion with that.
- 1:09:53You got a guy that you were accounting for over here moving
- 1:09:56all the way across the formation and again we get did some good
- 1:10:02jobs there with the kick and then like I said, good double
- 1:10:04teams on both of the Interior guys.
- 1:10:06And you know yet More Caden. Moreover, their kind of get the
- 1:10:12good block with sik and then kind of getting up there and
- 1:10:14Walden off that backer. Hmm.
- 1:10:18Backer say you got in there. Yeah, I don't know for sure what
- 1:10:24I offense was doing last year. I don't even want to go back and
- 1:10:26try to watch it but I think the concept of what Joe Rudolph may
- 1:10:30have wanted to do was more downhill running, you know line
- 1:10:33up big on big my guys better than your guy and that's pushed
- 1:10:36you down and we fucking work better than their guys and you
- 1:10:39ain't pushing the ball so even if you look at that plane it
- 1:10:42doesn't go for a touchdown right there if you can get three yards
- 1:10:46on a First and Ten on our own, Any running play, that's, that's
- 1:10:50good. Which we were like, we hardly
- 1:10:54could do last year. So I think that the, the
- 1:10:57blocking that they have started, doing some of the Zone blocking
- 1:11:01that we were doing the crooks brought in, and maybe the way
- 1:11:04that the office is going, is definitely going to see us back
- 1:11:08to what Sheldon said have a little bit more explosive plays.
- 1:11:11So, I'm excited about that. That's what we need for sure.
- 1:11:15And he talked about explosive plays, here's one of those that
- 1:11:17shovel song. About.
- 1:11:19We got on this one. We got shotgun.
- 1:11:23Why off Trio. So we got trips here with the Y
- 1:11:28and it's just power. We're going to see Power here
- 1:11:32and it's chance. Black showing good patience and
- 1:11:35reading his blocks and then kind of exploded outside again to Big
- 1:11:39gain for. So I'm going to run it through
- 1:11:40and let y'all look at it. Get up, but thanks buffer.
- 1:11:50At the beginning of it, I don't know why it's doing that.
- 1:12:03And I mean what you're seeing here so this is supposed to be
- 1:12:06the guard kicking the H kind of wrapping in the hole that's the
- 1:12:10design but because the defensive end is crashing here.
- 1:12:15You're going to see the guard kind of roll up.
- 1:12:18Take that defensive end. And that means that the angle
- 1:12:21for the H has to be kind of a little bit tighter.
- 1:12:24It gets just enough and then black, really good job.
- 1:12:28Being patient. They're letting Tisdale get
- 1:12:31caught in the trash a little bit and then bouncing out and get
- 1:12:34another strong, big run. Like, he had a good start block
- 1:12:36out there too. Yeah, right there, big time.
- 1:12:46The sudden blocking I can't, I can't tell who's on defense
- 1:12:51defense. Y'all to get your shot, that's
- 1:12:53bad, get your shit together. Maybe that's why he said his job
- 1:13:00getting a little bit easier. Exactly.
- 1:13:02People off of him. Why y'all need to get your shit
- 1:13:05together? I wasn't doing shit.
- 1:13:08Hey Brian tonight, can I ask I'm assuming?
- 1:13:1034 is Tisdale, could he have taken a better angle there?
- 1:13:15So looking here, I mean he kind of gets caught up with McDonald
- 1:13:18here and McDonald. I think should have went a
- 1:13:24little bit wider here and it makes Tuesday's problem a little
- 1:13:27bit job, a little bit harder, but I think if he sees where
- 1:13:32McDonald is he should know that. Now he's going to need to be
- 1:13:35responsible for for the edge and he doesn't get out there enough
- 1:13:38and unfortunately that gives black a lot of room to get
- 1:13:42outside there. It looks like neither of them
- 1:13:47really knew what they were doing here.
- 1:13:50If I'm being honest, McDonald doesn't really do a good job of
- 1:13:55kind of easy. In this case, he's supposed to
- 1:13:57be kind of wrong. Arming, the, the puller, and,
- 1:14:01and keeping outside leverage. He does a piss-poor job of doing
- 1:14:04that, so that makes Tisdale's job a lot harder to kind of get
- 1:14:09over the top and straight. Yeah, I would still say, even
- 1:14:13though the plate is uneven, If they had defended it perfectly,
- 1:14:17that is still likely 34 yard, gain it random, and it
- 1:14:22perfectly. Unless somebody absolutely
- 1:14:23shoots like McDonald's, a at the pylon and he's coming behind
- 1:14:30him. You likely getting out here.
- 1:14:33Probably getting to the 45. And that's those plays that you
- 1:14:37need, right? I mean this is great.
- 1:14:40Explosive plays are great, right?
- 1:14:42We need more of them, but we still need the four and five
- 1:14:45yarders because of the next play Brian's about to show.
- 1:14:49If we can do this on Third and short every year.
- 1:14:53Or third and short. During the year, there's going
- 1:14:56to be a lot of W's in the win column.
- 1:14:58There's me a lot of numbers in the W column.
- 1:15:01Excuse me. All right, because this is like
- 1:15:03one of those metaphors. What about it?
- 1:15:08But to me, this was like, when I search, I remember seeing this
- 1:15:12play in the game, and Brian show me the tape on like, this is
- 1:15:16like the play. This is third and one.
- 1:15:18This is what we didn't do. Well last year and all in the
- 1:15:21renovation, we could not convert to save our ass last year.
- 1:15:25But on this one. Why play for?
- 1:15:26We got shotgun doubles Wing tight.
- 1:15:29You just going to see another split Zone here in the short
- 1:15:31yardage and solid successful convert.
- 1:15:36I mean, this is not a flashy player.
- 1:15:37Play in. This is kind of what we kind of
- 1:15:40do with this a little bit is that, you know, I'm not we're
- 1:15:42not just going to show you the big plays, we got to show some
- 1:15:44of these things that show Improvement and show that there
- 1:15:48is a little bit of light here. So I'll let it run through one
- 1:15:53time and then we'll take it a little bit slower.
- 1:15:58You're just a solid via for 5-yard gain there, but, you
- 1:16:01know, a lot of good things here that we didn't necessarily see a
- 1:16:04lot of last year, struggled in short, yardage Parker picks up
- 1:16:10the blitz are here he recognizes, there's probably a
- 1:16:12check here but watching Pick Up The Blitz are coming off the
- 1:16:16edge. Fix that up there.
- 1:16:20That play doesn't really do anything.
- 1:16:21If you don't get that block, Good kick by Benji again, coming
- 1:16:27across the formation kicking Nelson out again and then let's
- 1:16:33look at the different. Look at the solid double team
- 1:16:36here with Brody Meadows and in Braylon more, that's what kind
- 1:16:41of creates that lane for them. They eat up.
- 1:16:44Pollard pushing, my probably gets about three or four yards
- 1:16:47off the ball. He got a little nice window,
- 1:16:49they have to run through makes Benji's job a whole lot easier.
- 1:16:52He doesn't have to move. Coal away there.
- 1:16:55Because you get the whole opening up with the double team,
- 1:16:58which is what you actually want. I mean, the kick is nice, the
- 1:17:01kick is solid, but it's the double team that really kind of
- 1:17:03opens that thing up. I mean and that's the plays
- 1:17:08you've got to have. Yeah but like I said it's not
- 1:17:11sexy but it's the plays that he drives going.
- 1:17:15Exactly, exactly. So I mean, I think overall we
- 1:17:20see this and it's a lot of maroon, but again with maroon,
- 1:17:24we were pretty much playing with the first team offensive line.
- 1:17:27Yeah. So, that makes you feel good
- 1:17:30again. I feel even better about Brody
- 1:17:32being the 2D because I still think the stuff we saw in
- 1:17:36chaplain last year. That guy's taking growth and,
- 1:17:39you know, from what we've heard, what we've heard inside spring
- 1:17:44practice Is he was getting there.
- 1:17:47He's getting there and his big UNS physical, he is as he is.
- 1:17:51I think it's going to be crazy. Let's get to some other stuff,
- 1:17:53but what do you want talk about next.
- 1:17:55All right, so we moved on from the running game, pretty much
- 1:17:57everything from here forward is going to be something different
- 1:18:00than just straight. Russia's.
- 1:18:02What we're looking at here is showing some improvement from
- 1:18:06Wells, both from just delivering the ball to recognition.
- 1:18:11So that's we're going to look at now, first play here, I'll just
- 1:18:15Just let it kind of go through. We're looking at shotgun doubles
- 1:18:18Wing. It's going to be a kind of a
- 1:18:20five-step deep out. This is going to show Wells,
- 1:18:24delivering a very timely, throw to God's now and again showing
- 1:18:27off some a guy's nose route running that shuttle was talking
- 1:18:30about earlier. Like I say very good route by
- 1:18:42Gosnell against Tulane there, so, you know, it's a solid solid
- 1:18:45cover. Accurate ball delivered right
- 1:18:48out of the break. So I possibly get from the boy,
- 1:18:54I was definitely giving them a little room to throw that thing.
- 1:18:57Now it could have been me to little bit of my biased look
- 1:19:00like they did not send as much pressure.
- 1:19:05And maybe the white team just didn't have the horses to do it,
- 1:19:09but they didn't send as much pressure on the white team as
- 1:19:12the maroon team, just what I see.
- 1:19:16Yeah, I think you're right. White team's defense didn't
- 1:19:19pressure the quarterback as much as the brooms team's defense
- 1:19:23deal. Yeah, I would agree with that
- 1:19:27for sure. It was definitely something
- 1:19:31balanced there in terms of the calls.
- 1:19:32And I mean obviously you got two different people calling each
- 1:19:36side there so there could be just those are the differences
- 1:19:39there. Alright, let's move on to play
- 1:19:42six. Let me get that pulled up here.
- 1:19:46Alright. Alright, so for place takes we
- 1:19:49got trip swing tight, right? This is going to be kind of a
- 1:19:52seam attack in the passing game and this is going to be a free
- 1:19:58play. So Wells, recognizes the free.
- 1:20:01Play through the back shoulder Fade up there to Tucker Holloway
- 1:20:07so let's one run that through. Let's take a look at it.
- 1:20:13That will see a few things. He obviously, Wells, recognizes
- 1:20:15right away. He's got a free play.
- 1:20:17We see, I can't tell who that is, it jumps off?
- 1:20:20Sides. On the end there, but defensive
- 1:20:22end up at the top jumps off sides.
- 1:20:26She's got a free play. We got a seam attack on this
- 1:20:32side at the bottom and then we got tal away, running the fade
- 1:20:37at the top. Jonathan got lost.
- 1:20:41Yep. He got turned around, you got
- 1:20:47turned around. But I mean the balls place it a
- 1:20:51pretty good spot. Yeah kind of back shoulder.
- 1:20:53You like to see if maybe a little bit more outside but he's
- 1:20:56got a free play. He took the shot that's going to
- 1:20:58get him. Probably the most yards safest
- 1:21:00plates as well here. So I like the decision and I
- 1:21:04think you know that shows a little bit of growth from last
- 1:21:06year. I think for Wells didn't panic
- 1:21:09in the situation made the right through especially since its
- 1:21:12fourth and four. He knows he's got a first down
- 1:21:14regardless so just just to get situationally aware play.
- 1:21:21And we'll move on to play seven here as I get that pulled up.
- 1:21:27No bronzer, while you're pulling that up.
- 1:21:30You know what we've seen here are these is this just like RPO
- 1:21:36Moorhead basic plays or is this little bit sprinkled on some
- 1:21:41minutes? I mean these are still kind of
- 1:21:44similar route Concepts to what more runs more head runs.
- 1:21:47There's you know a few things here there that are Um but I
- 1:21:51mean, these are typical Moorhead styled play calls.
- 1:21:57Definitely seeing scheme wise. We're going to get to that next.
- 1:22:00Okay, a lot more Concepts from Moorhead in this version of the
- 1:22:08offense than what we saw. I think it really any point last
- 1:22:12year, okay? I mean I think we just looking
- 1:22:16at these place to as you run this one when we watch it.
- 1:22:19Here Wells. Yeah.
- 1:22:22And let before I get into into that I mean let's let's talk
- 1:22:26about the Moorhead RPO Concepts in general, right?
- 1:22:28So you know we hear are Bo get thrown out there a lot.
- 1:22:33We know kind of what it is, but in the Moorhead system, there's
- 1:22:37kind of steps that are taken. The quarterback takes to know
- 1:22:41whether he's throwing it, giving it or some combination of that.
- 1:22:46And the first thing you're looking for is that there's
- 1:22:47there a free access through as their, it alert throw where you
- 1:22:51can just get it out there and get some free yardage.
- 1:22:54That's what you're looking for first.
- 1:22:55So if they answer to that is, yes, then you're going to throw
- 1:22:58that if not you're going to move to the next step.
- 1:23:01Next Step do is there boxer. Pressure issues is the Box
- 1:23:04overloaded. Is there somebody showing Blitz,
- 1:23:08pre-snap? That could create some issues
- 1:23:10for you. If the answer is, yes, you're
- 1:23:13going to go ahead and make a check to pass protection, and
- 1:23:15you're going to throw the pass in that RPO call.
- 1:23:19The answer is no you don't move to the next step.
- 1:23:22Then you're going to i.d. the read, Defender pre-snap, and
- 1:23:25determine if they can make the tackle on the ball carrier at or
- 1:23:29near the line of scrimmage. So if the guy that you're
- 1:23:33reading, typically in like a 4-3 defense that we're looking at
- 1:23:36here, that's going to be the outside linebacker to the throw
- 1:23:40side. If that guy can come up and make
- 1:23:43a plate near, or at the line of scrimmage, Then you're not going
- 1:23:49to. You're going to either go with
- 1:23:50the pass. So if the answer is yes, you're
- 1:23:53going to make a perimeter throw or a pitch.
- 1:23:55Whichever the play call is. And if he's kind of outside the
- 1:23:58box, he's playing that past leverage, then you're going to
- 1:24:01go with that Middle Run or dive. So that's kind of the
- 1:24:04progressions that you go through pre-snap.
- 1:24:06And then obviously, you're still also reading that that read band
- 1:24:10during the the mesh point at the start of the play.
- 1:24:15So that's kind of of what you what the progressions are for
- 1:24:18the quarterback in terms of the run-pass option in the Moorhead
- 1:24:21system. Okay, so let's start with this
- 1:24:24play here. Shotgun trips left.
- 1:24:27We're going to see a bubble, our po.
- 1:24:30This is going to be Wells. He's going to fake the show, The
- 1:24:35Dive there. He's going to get it out to his
- 1:24:38slot receiver there. Berkey, you can see here if you
- 1:24:43watch it's really on a want, you know, one or two-person route.
- 1:24:46Here. So that, that's typical of rpos.
- 1:24:47Usually have pretty much everybody blocking except for
- 1:24:51one or two routes within the concept and then obviously, the
- 1:24:53running back carrying out the Run, fake or run, depending on
- 1:24:56what the what the decision there is, but I'll let it play.
- 1:24:59First, we can look at it, some more.
- 1:25:03First down. Yep.
- 1:25:05And I like the design here that was beloved.
- 1:25:09Yeah, inside run action. You're reading McDonald here,
- 1:25:13you'll see. He's right at the edge of the
- 1:25:15Box, he's not playing leverage on the slot.
- 1:25:18So that means that that's that's where they're going to look and
- 1:25:22it kind of puts those Edge and spill defenders in Conflict here
- 1:25:25because McDonald comes up on that run fake.
- 1:25:30And obviously, with this one you got your well, so you can take
- 1:25:33off to in this concept. So you kind of got if If a
- 1:25:37Donald chases, the slot after the fake Wells can keep it and
- 1:25:43get up the alley, but since McDonald comes up, he's going to
- 1:25:47make the throw and you already got your receivers out here to
- 1:25:50the trip side blocking, the the to Corner, it will the corner in
- 1:25:54the same here. So just a good concept, you
- 1:25:59know, and well executed here. So Nothing to really complain
- 1:26:05about with that. As I said, it's just a good
- 1:26:07play. Yeah, really, really good skiing
- 1:26:10and that's kind of what we're going to talk about here is kind
- 1:26:12of going through the scheme Concepts and seeing how Tyler
- 1:26:17Bowen is doing a good job of getting, guys, in positions to
- 1:26:20make some plays in the passing game.
- 1:26:22But I think the other piece about that and I mean, Callie
- 1:26:24you've mentioned it and I've shown you a lot of mention it to
- 1:26:26in the past. The there we saw nothing but
- 1:26:30fastballs it felt like from Grant next year that you can't
- 1:26:34make the fastball throw that he threw that accurate.
- 1:26:37He put some touch on it, he made 49ers job, easy catch right
- 1:26:42around that corner, right? All right, so we got we seen the
- 1:26:49white team on offense now guys. White team on offense and this
- 1:26:57is a, this is another rp0 concept yet.
- 1:27:00Shotgun why off trips left? And we're looking at a rp0, kind
- 1:27:07of three-step dig. And this is going to be drones
- 1:27:11to Felton connection. So that's something that we're
- 1:27:13going to look forward to potentially seeing a whole lot
- 1:27:15of in the future, please. All right, so right away.
- 1:27:23If we look here, we got this backer, he's showing Blitz.
- 1:27:26He's up in the box. So, right away, pre-snap.
- 1:27:29That's going to be a shift in the protection and you're
- 1:27:32probably going to throw it to the to the primary outside
- 1:27:34around. Here's which is going to be
- 1:27:36filled and running a big When we actually run it through first
- 1:27:45and I'll lay back and slow. On it there's that explosive
- 1:27:52plays shelter has been talking about another explosive play and
- 1:27:58I like the way this is thrown on time.
- 1:28:01Drones as a good job of carrying out, the Fate getting his feet
- 1:28:05set, delivering it to Felton and felt in good hands and then
- 1:28:10running through contact there to get some bonus yards for us,
- 1:28:13right? And the protection wasn't awful.
- 1:28:20That's about the best I can say about the way of the wind the in
- 1:28:23this case the protection, when compared to what it had been.
- 1:28:27Yeah, I mean, you still have the defensive end flying off the
- 1:28:29edge there because they couldn't God save me.
- 1:28:32Now, make up the Blitzer or the, or the down linemen there.
- 1:28:36So the picked up, nobody even if I can get your shit together.
- 1:28:41I tell you when offensive linemen are thinking too much
- 1:28:45that I who Michael get, they always get.
- 1:28:47Nobody anytime you're thinking that much.
- 1:28:49You're not going to block anybody, right?
- 1:28:55All right, so we're going to move on to the next one here,
- 1:28:58let me get that pulled up Curtis I'll let you wax poetic while
- 1:29:01I'm getting ready. Well the fun.
- 1:29:03This is a fun with this was the fun one and we've seen him
- 1:29:06already and I put honorable mention of being VP at a game
- 1:29:13was got Benji guys. Now that was the guy was, I love
- 1:29:18the most and you already saw with the Block, Tally, has
- 1:29:22already complimented his blocking on some of those wraps.
- 1:29:25Just basically still making people or wiping people out.
- 1:29:29This was the big one in. This was, this is why I'm
- 1:29:34saying, when Gallo leaves or maybe even this year in Gasps
- 1:29:41tail and a quad right. Yeah.
- 1:29:45Legit for sure. Very legit.
- 1:29:49I love the concept of this because we've already seen, you
- 1:29:52know, we've talked about, you know, they turned swings here
- 1:29:55early in the game. Shelton talked about the first
- 1:29:57play was a swing pass out to tude and made it made Jalen
- 1:30:01Jones, missing space got a pretty good game to start things
- 1:30:04off. We've seen the swing pass a
- 1:30:06couple other times and now they've already set that up.
- 1:30:10And now we get this play here. We got shotgun.
- 1:30:13Why trips left. This is a swing motion tight in
- 1:30:18angle so they shut their going to show the swing motion with
- 1:30:21the running back and the tight end.
- 1:30:25In this case, Benji guys know is going to show block and then
- 1:30:28he's gonna kind of escape on an angle route, towards the middle
- 1:30:31of the field, I'll let it run here. and unfortunately, don't
- 1:30:35get a good angle there on the On the the running back motion.
- 1:30:40We all saw this live though, you know, we saw this live so you
- 1:30:45can see the running back right here, had winning motion and
- 1:30:49then kind of flared out for the bubble.
- 1:30:53Benji was here. He kind of set up like he was
- 1:30:55going to block the the Sam. You can see a little bit here,
- 1:31:00set up like he's blocking the same, then he angled inside
- 1:31:02there. And right to the middle of the
- 1:31:05field. Just a perfect play call against
- 1:31:07that defense. Head around for him.
- 1:31:10Yep. And Matt little round and then
- 1:31:13and then made a got mrs. Basement a good to see benjin
- 1:31:18just running man you know he's at two big injuries so to see
- 1:31:22him just playing football, is good.
- 1:31:25Yep happy for him. But again, great concept here,
- 1:31:28good Ball by Wells, nothing really to complain about here.
- 1:31:33And like I said, From a scheme concept, really, really good
- 1:31:35scheme. Go back just a hair because you
- 1:31:37talk about the scheme, all that concept.
- 1:31:40Just I'll tell you what a pause. Because this is what I noticed
- 1:31:45and again, I'm the Casual here. Pause it.
- 1:31:49Not yet. Let it go a little further.
- 1:31:52Let's get further into the play right there.
- 1:31:56Pause it even if Jenkins goes with him perfectly.
- 1:32:02Look at that. Look how wide open in the amount
- 1:32:04of space and I don't know if that's basil tune or somebody or
- 1:32:08black or Duke look at that space.
- 1:32:14There is no one within 12 yards of him.
- 1:32:19Well, this is also showing you how when you attack laterally
- 1:32:22you can set things up in the middle of the field, stretch the
- 1:32:26defense out and then you exploit them in the middle over the
- 1:32:29vehicle to hell. So I just said you mentioned
- 1:32:34attack in the middle a little bit so I do have a kind of a
- 1:32:38niche that for you want a slap to hear 2021.
- 1:32:42If you look at percentage of to throne between the numbers, One
- 1:32:49219 yards, downfield. So basically, like, you know,
- 1:32:52from where the, you know, the 40 is marked like 119 yards down
- 1:32:55the field, what we call the intermediate-mass we write, I
- 1:32:58think 129th out of 130 FBS teams.
- 1:33:01So basically the last couple years of .8, we never ever threw
- 1:33:05the ball over the middle. Like you can see a lot of, you
- 1:33:07know, RPS answering tough. As you said, the reason that you
- 1:33:11want to do that is just to keep defenses honest so that they
- 1:33:14can't just you know the linebackers can't just ignore
- 1:33:17that part. Of the field.
- 1:33:18So I will coercing hear from, you know, from Bowen, rpos
- 1:33:22science. All that stuff to try to Target
- 1:33:24the middle of field because that just didn't happen when
- 1:33:25referring to the last couple of years.
- 1:33:27Yeah. And you're not the first person
- 1:33:30to bitch about this on that program on this program because
- 1:33:32man did I bitch about not attacking the middle of the
- 1:33:35field for at least three years, at least three?
- 1:33:39Yeah, it was, it was bad, it was real bad.
- 1:33:43When we talk about I'll hit the layups, a lot of times some of
- 1:33:46these plays. Not like stupor.
- 1:33:50Nope, like fancy, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:33:52You just like, Sheldon just say like Brian said, sometimes you
- 1:33:55just got to take the layups if the middle of the field is open.
- 1:33:58Put the ball there. You know, have a player and we
- 1:34:02just sometimes like we haven't done that especially not with
- 1:34:06one that was here like it was like they were so set and the
- 1:34:09more we found out was they were like one read, throw the ball to
- 1:34:13that receiver you know, that receiver in open you running
- 1:34:16like come on. Yeah.
- 1:34:19Now to be fair like I think I'm in order to the ball over the
- 1:34:22middle. You do have to have a strong arm
- 1:34:24quarterback, make reads and obviously back to Burma after
- 1:34:28was not that but at the same time again you have to you can
- 1:34:31just completely ignored. Because if you do then like the
- 1:34:33linebackers just aren't going to respect that part of the field.
- 1:34:35They can they can shoot over so well made and we gotta get a
- 1:34:39white team showing here again. White team backlight seen back.
- 1:34:42Yeah, let's go back to what Sheldon said white team even
- 1:34:47though they put zero points on the They did have some good
- 1:34:50drives in some very good plays again.
- 1:34:52We compare last year to this year, they actually did
- 1:34:55something. So what's this one run?
- 1:34:58Yeah, so this is a, we're actually going to start looking
- 1:35:00at next few plays are going to be kind of highlighting some of
- 1:35:02the good plays from some sort of, from some of the newcomers
- 1:35:06here. So, first play here, shotgun why
- 1:35:08off trips, right? You're looking at a RPO kind of
- 1:35:12three steps. Slant, we're going drones to
- 1:35:15felled in very tight coverage by Dorian.
- 1:35:18Wrong here, just a solid play and something like Sheldon said
- 1:35:21that we didn't see a lot under the previous regime or really a
- 1:35:24whole lot last year kind of. So I'll let it run first and
- 1:35:28then we'll look at it more. I'm by 18 is a freshman y'all.
- 1:35:38That's all I'm saying. Yeah.
- 1:35:42And that is hitting up in my mouth and felt as a big dude.
- 1:35:47That's all that's a whole lot of man coming at wide.
- 1:35:49Receiver there, you know, priest a PC.
- 1:35:52We got a bit, we got a heavy box here.
- 1:35:55So this is going to be pretty much a default pass play.
- 1:35:58All the way based on the Moorhead rules.
- 1:36:01They're very accurate, throw in tight coverage from drones here
- 1:36:06and also probably some of the best protection.
- 1:36:07He'd gotten to that point. I was just about to say that
- 1:36:09Brian light again. Drawings did not Have a good
- 1:36:13day, so I'm not advocating for him on that.
- 1:36:14But his, his pocket was so nasty, the whole game.
- 1:36:20This was one of the cleaner Pockets that he had and you can
- 1:36:25see he has some skill being able to deliver that ball in tight
- 1:36:29coverage. Well his best plays are
- 1:36:31play-action three-step drops which tells me that he's working
- 1:36:35on influencing the linebackers and getting the ball in his
- 1:36:38hands quick because he did not have time to get a five-step
- 1:36:41drop in there and sit in the van.
- 1:36:42Pocket. But again, this is probably the
- 1:36:45best that line looked again. You get some run action, they're
- 1:36:48actually good job of the was at the guard, over here, pulling
- 1:36:52peeling off and picking up number 41 there to kind of
- 1:36:56finish things off. And again, that's a good ball in
- 1:37:01very tight coverage by strong, strong, strong strong hands by
- 1:37:09Felton to pull it in and then, you know, finishes the Run by
- 1:37:12running through the safety. That's another two yards.
- 1:37:16You have to eat you. You know you would be stopped,
- 1:37:20that makes a difference in a game when you're falling
- 1:37:22forward. And like I felt I think Feldman
- 1:37:27as far as the newcomers probably had the best game from a wide
- 1:37:31receiver standpoint. So he went out there and kind of
- 1:37:34hung his nuts a little bit, especially as that for a second
- 1:37:37quarter ran down. He had some some good run there
- 1:37:42again. I like the concept again, we're
- 1:37:44looking at more RPO we've seen, you know, a lot of our po
- 1:37:47elements in the in this little short, short number Clips, we
- 1:37:51looked at so far. So another thing to highlight is
- 1:37:54Is that? You got to be a lot of wide
- 1:37:57receivers, do not want to go over the middle.
- 1:37:59We've had a lot of Dan Roberts, he was like, we loved Trey.
- 1:38:04Trey was very thin, you know, when he was a wide receiver here
- 1:38:07in last year, just was what it was.
- 1:38:09But to have a wide receiver that can go over the middle and get
- 1:38:12some catches there is going to be big for us because that's a
- 1:38:15possession. Pie plate.
- 1:38:18Yep. And the next we got here, we
- 1:38:20got, we got shotgun spread Flex, right?
- 1:38:25This is just going to be a swing pass.
- 1:38:28And what I like here is something we didn't see last
- 1:38:30year, hopefully we see Wells improve on this but this is a
- 1:38:32good good example of drones. Having some really good touch on
- 1:38:36a ball some of those short routes I love the way he gives
- 1:38:41Thomas not a great opportunity to get up field and get some
- 1:38:44good yardage on this. So I'll run it through and we
- 1:38:46can watch it. Nice touch.
- 1:38:51Pretty good blocking up there on the outside.
- 1:38:53Yep. Yep.
- 1:38:55Least giving him somewhere to go.
- 1:38:57Yeah. He had a fair to put a good
- 1:38:59touch on that path because of the pressure on that side.
- 1:39:02Yep. So you got pressure coming off
- 1:39:04the edge, good pickup. Well, good pickup by one player
- 1:39:08on the right there but not a great pick by.
- 1:39:12So here's what it looks like to me.
- 1:39:15The Freshman talk about how was getting downright a, how is your
- 1:39:17true freshman just completely with and so some happen because
- 1:39:23good knobs acting like you got a fan call and nobody else is
- 1:39:26Fanning so good moms. He's kicking out to get the the
- 1:39:31Blitzer but he just lets the let's the Dow man just run by
- 1:39:36Free Run. To the quarterback.
- 1:39:37Why did a quarterback but give? But again, look at drone in his
- 1:39:42face he doesn't fire it, touches it.
- 1:39:45Yeah. Get the ball.
- 1:39:46Yeah, I mean back to run, definitely show some Poise there
- 1:39:50to kind of get a good ball on there and doesn't break put
- 1:39:55enough arc on it to where the the Blitzer can't kind of jump
- 1:39:58up and get his hands on it. What's it right?
- 1:40:01Where it needs to be for Thomas to catch and run.
- 1:40:03I mean a whole lot to like about that play, even though it's only
- 1:40:07basically, you know, nine-yard gain their 9, 10 yard gain.
- 1:40:10But I mean, it's moving the sticks and giving us another
- 1:40:14opportunity to to put some points on the board.
- 1:40:16So, Yeah. Blocking by self do we need?
- 1:40:20We need more of that this year because I don't ya I have a
- 1:40:25feeling just looking at Belton. I think felt them likes to
- 1:40:28block. I mean seriously watching that
- 1:40:31like it looked like he enjoyed it there's nobody he's got the
- 1:40:37body for it sometimes that's it. This is one of my, the next one
- 1:40:43is just one of my favorite passes by drones because there
- 1:40:46ain't many people can do this shit right.
- 1:40:48Here. Yeah, and this is a big one.
- 1:40:50So we got this play here. Shotgun doubles Wing tight,
- 1:40:54right? The play is going to be a mesh
- 1:40:56running back wheel. And you're going to see drones
- 1:41:01get the ball to Coney in a very tight window for a big game.
- 1:41:05So I'll let it run first and then we'll look at it again.
- 1:41:11The back at up. I like, I like County.
- 1:41:15It's still doing some, I mean, the staff likes him too.
- 1:41:18And True freshman, true freshman.
- 1:41:24Yeah, hadn't even seen the water.
- 1:41:26Let's look at the protection. Let's look at the protection of
- 1:41:29your debt. Decent protection, decent
- 1:41:31protection. You'll see the mesh here, it'll
- 1:41:34be if you're either throwing the wheel or you're throwing to
- 1:41:38Jennings kind of on the shallow cross here.
- 1:41:40That's going to be your one and two reads.
- 1:41:42So Read one had a, he had a good window.
- 1:41:45It was going to be tight, but he had if they're delivered a solid
- 1:41:48ball. Gets it there just in time for
- 1:41:52Cody to bring the tackle and make a good run.
- 1:41:57I just love it. Throw Yeah, it just asked
- 1:42:01question, Brian. Yeah.
- 1:42:05So how would you assess the depth or the angle of the route
- 1:42:10that he took? Because I feel like if that
- 1:42:11linebacker did its homework and maybe do the play was coming or
- 1:42:14if he was just a bit faster. That could potentially be a Pick
- 1:42:166. Yeah, so I think based on where
- 1:42:22the backer was, that's, that's a very tight throw to make.
- 1:42:26I think if you had a backer that had more knowledge and ability
- 1:42:31there, that's a dangerous. Third of make, I think,
- 1:42:36situationally it's not that it's not a bad decision, but it's one
- 1:42:41of those that could be either a catch for you or an incompletion
- 1:42:44given what what, the linebackers showing right here.
- 1:42:47But yeah. A more confident linebacker
- 1:42:49would have been able to make a make a play here, right?
- 1:42:55But on the other side of that, I'm more confident linebacker
- 1:43:00might have tried to jump it and they don't get a handle call me.
- 1:43:04Because this would have been a bigger even a bigger run if I
- 1:43:07don't know, that's a no, that's a walk-on.
- 1:43:11I'm pretty sure it is get a number.
- 1:43:14Then when you run to play, That's George balance.
- 1:43:23Hey, all right, so, but but my point is just flips, out, your
- 1:43:30right Sheldon. Somebody couldn't do that to a
- 1:43:32Pick 6, but if they don't make it balance, goes to the player,
- 1:43:38not the ball, he's not thinking about the pick it.
- 1:43:41What he does is he gets that hand on him.
- 1:43:43Just for a second, too. Slow kony's momentum.
- 1:43:46He doesn't do that. He tries to go for the ball and
- 1:43:49he gets in there. That free safety, right?
- 1:43:55Funny. Go at your curse of the free
- 1:43:56safety. This turns out to a big game
- 1:44:02because a huge gain anyway. But you imagine that shot the
- 1:44:05restaurants from the writers carrying.
- 1:44:07Pretty much everybody but balance to the middle of the
- 1:44:10field. Yeah. 35 comes over makes the
- 1:44:13tackle but what I'm saying is he slowed his momentum down.
- 1:44:17Yeah, it's a foot race if he doesn't hit him.
- 1:44:22Yeah, but I definitely agree with Sean's point.
- 1:44:24I mean, there are a lot of linebackers that could make that
- 1:44:27play. Oh yeah. 1000%.
- 1:44:31Yeah, what's the next one? And you know let's look at this
- 1:44:37before we move on to the next one real quick.
- 1:44:39You know, he's got Jennings if he wants Jennings, so it me if
- 1:44:42this is if this is a linebacker that's more capable.
- 1:44:46You know, the play is still a good play call because the
- 1:44:48concept you're still having Jennings coming free underneath
- 1:44:53here on the, on the cross. So you're still getting, he's
- 1:44:57probably gonna catch it right there at the hash, he's going to
- 1:44:59get 78 yards on that. All right.
- 1:45:15Next play is a fun when we get to see our buddy pot Watson.
- 1:45:28This is a touchdown throw. This is the this is the big
- 1:45:30touchdown. So we get on this one.
- 1:45:33It's a shotgun double-doubles Wing.
- 1:45:35We got a bubble, go route concept here.
- 1:45:39It's going to be pop. Pop taking a deep shot to
- 1:45:42Tucker. Holloway out there at the top.
- 1:45:47And I'll let it run through here.
- 1:45:54You kind of That Swing Swing action influence the defense.
- 1:46:00Tucker with the one-on-one pizzas, man, I wish we could see
- 1:46:05up top are what happened to y'all remember?
- 1:46:09Was it a slip? Was it just you got turned
- 1:46:12around a little bit in the top when he's, when he's spending
- 1:46:14his hips. He got got a little loose and
- 1:46:16lost Tucker. Okay.
- 1:46:23And I mean this is another, you know I mean my hello holding
- 1:46:26that too who's that up? At top 75?
- 1:46:31Yeah, I'll bet it'll hold a baby.
- 1:46:34Yeah, she killed a little bit here.
- 1:46:37I think they let this one go. I think they let this one go.
- 1:46:41He was a little slow getting across really took a bad angle
- 1:46:44if we're being honest. Yeah he needs.
- 1:46:46He needs to be flattered with that.
- 1:46:48He comes too far afield. Yeah. but I mean, this is one
- 1:46:59that The go wasn't the primary. This this is supposed to be a
- 1:47:03swing kind of all the way you can tell by what the the other
- 1:47:06receivers are doing. So the swing is actually the
- 1:47:10primary here. See him, look at the swing, see
- 1:47:13it's not there. See where his eyes went and he
- 1:47:17threw off his back foot because you know shit didn't do a great
- 1:47:20job of getting across their but hard to argue with the 40 yard
- 1:47:25score, right? All right, we're going to get
- 1:47:37one here. That's our other.
- 1:47:43True freshman quarterback. Curtis left us?
- 1:47:47He ran away. Ian Curtis what you doing?
- 1:47:58Maybe had to be it. Knowing Curtis that that's
- 1:48:03that's happened. Yes, that happened right there.
- 1:48:07Well, Sheldon gets the, the point there.
- 1:48:11Shell gets the point. All right, so we got this one
- 1:48:13formation. We got shotgun spread.
- 1:48:16Y, could be a go ahead. I will say it to the place that
- 1:48:19can be a go X curl and Whiskey's, gonna take a deep
- 1:48:23ball shot to sudden that we should have had a touchdown on
- 1:48:26here, on third and 13. I'll let it run.
- 1:48:30Well, you get it on the screen. First that make were added in
- 1:48:33that way. Here we go.
- 1:48:46Oh, that hurts your heart hurts, your heart.
- 1:48:52All right, so let's talk about this.
- 1:48:54We got stunts on both sides of the, the defensive line here,
- 1:48:58and the offensive line just watches them happen and does
- 1:49:00absolutely nothing. So we can, we can watch that
- 1:49:05real quick. We got stunts stunts.
- 1:49:07Start start and we're just going to watch.
- 1:49:11Guys are just like what's going on here?
- 1:49:14Why are four guys surrounding? Yeah, let's not do that.
- 1:49:21We should do that. That should be happening back
- 1:49:25there. Don't get the Freshman killed
- 1:49:27for God's sake. I mean with this is a good ball
- 1:49:30with three guys. Bearing down on him go what's it
- 1:49:34puts it right on his hands in the end zone.
- 1:49:36I mean the only thing. The thing I like to see from him
- 1:49:39is that based on where Sons running this route, I'd like to
- 1:49:42see the ball delivered right on the hash instead of back inside
- 1:49:45about back outside of it because it gives the receiver a chance
- 1:49:49to run through it instead of having to bend back and makes
- 1:49:52the catch a little bit harder. But I mean, that's really the
- 1:49:55only thing other than not, not catching it.
- 1:49:58That I would critique there. But you got, you got to bring
- 1:50:01that in its on your hands. Yeah, here's what I'm gonna say
- 1:50:05in y'all getting your viewpoints on this, Watching this tape
- 1:50:09watching the concepts watching things that they want done.
- 1:50:14It feels Leaps and Bounds. It feels Leaps and Bounds of
- 1:50:19where we were a year ago. It feels competent.
- 1:50:23It feels like feels like we look like we know what we're doing.
- 1:50:26There you go. Like even when we're not
- 1:50:28executing it looks like we know what we're doing.
- 1:50:31And then that makes sense that we've said on here and I think
- 1:50:38all of us in some way of said it is okay.
- 1:50:41Yeah. Tyler bones, never coached
- 1:50:42quarterbacks for, this is Tyler bowling system that basically
- 1:50:47what almost nine years. He's this has been his system,
- 1:50:52right? And this is a truly his baby
- 1:50:54this year versus last year. Where I feel like there was kind
- 1:50:57of too many cooks in the kitchen you know you had some of what
- 1:51:01Glenn wanted to do kind of sprinkled in there in the past
- 1:51:03game. You had someone what Rudolph
- 1:51:05wanted to do sprinkled in the Run game.
- 1:51:07This is truly Tyler bones baby this year and you can actually
- 1:51:12see his handprints and fingerprints and everything on.
- 1:51:16On this offense and I don't feel like we saw as much cohesive
- 1:51:20identity. Last year we saw, we saw pieces
- 1:51:23here and there, but we didn't see a cohesive identity.
- 1:51:25I saw more than the spring game than any point on offense last
- 1:51:28year. All right?
- 1:51:30What's this LeBron? All right.
- 1:51:32So this one here, we got a shotgun.
- 1:51:35Why off trips, right? It's going to be an X cross Z
- 1:51:38come back. And drones is gonna throw off
- 1:51:43his back foot incomplete. So this is one where, you know,
- 1:51:48will be a little bit little bit hard on drones, but this is also
- 1:51:51a little bit on the offensive line 2.
- 1:52:00And let's run it back here. Drones is going to get a little
- 1:52:04bit of pressure here in his face at the last minute.
- 1:52:07Can't step up. That's a long throw.
- 1:52:11That is a long throat. Yep.
- 1:52:13It's a long throw that you're not taking a full step in.
- 1:52:16To look at it, takes like a half step into it, as he's releasing
- 1:52:19this. I'm taking a fool.
- 1:52:21Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's trying to bend it around
- 1:52:24the defender while taking only a half step into it.
- 1:52:29Not the throw you want to make there, but it's a safe throw.
- 1:52:32I mean, it's not a throw that's going to, you know, create a
- 1:52:34turnover. So gets it.
- 1:52:37And the other thing here is that he really has his pick here
- 1:52:40because Jennings is running wide.
- 1:52:42The fuck open to that's his second.
- 1:52:45Read here, wide open. I think the hand goes up as he
- 1:52:50throws the ball. Yep.
- 1:52:54Hand in hand with up here and I mean both are probably get about
- 1:53:01the same amount of yardage depending on the catch there and
- 1:53:05in depending on whether 40 can get to get to Jennings whether
- 1:53:11Jennings has the angle or not. But I mean this is one where the
- 1:53:15you see the concepts concepts are good.
- 1:53:17It's there. Just got to execute better on
- 1:53:20the offensive line and you got to be able to make that throw.
- 1:53:22It's a hard throw to make but when you that open, you got to
- 1:53:26be able to get it there. Yeah, I saw I saw Bo and called
- 1:53:30a play against ODU. Is that is that zone coverage?
- 1:53:33Brian. Yes, it was.
- 1:53:37Okay. Yeah cuz I saw the linebacker
- 1:53:38kind of pass off the krauser to the next guy over so there's
- 1:53:42obviously miscommunication there but that's a good Zone beating
- 1:53:44play. Exactly.
- 1:53:46Exactly crossers are great for that.
- 1:53:50All right. So let me pull up the next one
- 1:53:52here. We got four more.
- 1:54:03Well, the next one is our pivot. As I prepare, this is our pivot.
- 1:54:08Yeah, we're looking. This is kind of the last one for
- 1:54:12the newcomers and then we're going to kind of pivot into the
- 1:54:14defensive defensive highlights here.
- 1:54:19You know, setting this up. I'll go ahead and share it here.
- 1:54:23We've got a shotgun doubles Wing.
- 1:54:27It's going to be a split Zone, RPO slant and drones is going to
- 1:54:32try to get it to Jennings. It's going to be a little bit of
- 1:54:34a tighter window than he expected.
- 1:54:36There's going to be a little Bobble.
- 1:54:37It Let it run through here first.
- 1:54:48All right, so this is one of those where, you know, we talked
- 1:54:51about the rules earlier. This is one where the rules kind
- 1:54:54of, unfortunately, put you in a bad spot.
- 1:54:57All right, so pre-snap, look at this box.
- 1:55:01You're our po routes over here. You got Defenders across the
- 1:55:06board, your read man's here. Based on those, you should say,
- 1:55:10all right, we're throwing this. What we get though is we get the
- 1:55:16safety rolling up into the in replacing that backer Zone.
- 1:55:21We've got a little Zone blitz. So what happens here, is that
- 1:55:24now You're throwing a slant right into where the safety is
- 1:55:28creeping into that zone. So the window got significantly
- 1:55:31tighter than what you anticipated, but the throw is
- 1:55:35made, throw a still made if slightly behind, probably a
- 1:55:40little bit earlier than you would want to make that throw
- 1:55:42normally, but catchable, but guess what?
- 1:55:46Catchable, but catchable, you get a little, you have a Bible
- 1:55:48here, doesn't quite Pull It in, doesn't secure it and then you
- 1:55:52get Phillips. You get most Phillips coming in
- 1:55:58there and true freshman gets his his first interception as a
- 1:56:02hokie. So bright, I love me.
- 1:56:04And you talked about this one me and Brian looked at this one.
- 1:56:07Sorry, tally was one of those days you could hop on with as we
- 1:56:10looked at this one in depth. And the reason I love this play
- 1:56:13from both sides is a the play call on defense is really good.
- 1:56:19It takes it away, but the throw by drones I mean that's on the
- 1:56:26money. It's still a good route ran by
- 1:56:28Jennings even though he kind of coughed it up.
- 1:56:31But the bigger part on this is Phillips at true freshman.
- 1:56:34And this is where it goes when we're kind of lean to the
- 1:56:36defense. He starts going that way.
- 1:56:39He doesn't stop. He doesn't stop that ball is
- 1:56:44tipped. He doesn't stop right here, he's
- 1:56:47going and he gets his pick. How many times do you see it in
- 1:56:51games? Where guys, stop the ball
- 1:56:52histogram? And they're like, oh what I do
- 1:56:55you stop That's why. We kept going and also you
- 1:57:01immediately look to get up field and I think I don't know what
- 1:57:07the latter part of the Fuente. Dbe's it seemed like they got an
- 1:57:10interception and then know what the fuck to do, right?
- 1:57:14He knew he needed to get a feel, get some yards, I like that, I
- 1:57:18like that and then he sees hey I'm trapped in here.
- 1:57:21Let's get out of bounds. Let's get a nice little late,
- 1:57:24hit there. I respect a little blindsided.
- 1:57:29I mean, I'm headhunting if there's a pic so I as I get it
- 1:57:33that's what I want to do now as an offensive lineman I did.
- 1:57:36I did not like those those those shots that you get a little ear
- 1:57:40hole shot, you definitely feel that for a little bit.
- 1:57:47All right, so first primarily defensive play here, we had a
- 1:57:52couple that are kind of the bigger place here, and then we
- 1:57:54got one that is a little more nuanced.
- 1:57:57So that's kind of the middle one here, that will sandwich at
- 1:58:01three levels. We've going on two hours, only
- 1:58:04few more minutes to wrap up tonight.
- 1:58:06Yeah yeah we're good, we're good.
- 1:58:09All right, so we're going to get this in here.
- 1:58:15This is place 17. We got shotgun doubles Wing
- 1:58:18tight, right? It's going to be a Sprint slot,
- 1:58:20cross play action and we're going to see strowman make an
- 1:58:25absolutely incredible instinctual play here.
- 1:58:41Trauma covered some ground on the plate.
- 1:58:47Stroman said, 40 is not going to make this.
- 1:58:50I got to make this Because strohman is playing in the Deep.
- 1:58:57He's playing middle deep. He's playing that cover one.
- 1:59:01He recognizes 40 angle and get to Jennings.
- 1:59:05So he gets to Jennings. Yeah.
- 1:59:11That's just incredible individual effort and also
- 1:59:15incredible instincts to kind of recognize what's there.
- 1:59:18And what you need to do to get a play.
- 1:59:21I mean that's something that turns into you know, potentially
- 1:59:24a touchdown but definitely a first down and goal for white
- 1:59:29and all of a sudden you get the ball back, right?
- 1:59:34Canteen right, place, right time.
- 1:59:36Katie right, place right time canteen in good coverage, on
- 1:59:40Felton, on the top there, you know, to, you know, to kind of
- 1:59:44piggyback on that good coverage, good, good placement there and
- 1:59:48because he's in good coverage and good place when he's there
- 1:59:50for the pick. Let me get these pick.
- 1:59:53They trying to get some trying to get get gone with it.
- 1:59:57They don't think they turning and running man.
- 1:59:59They're turning the running Turn and Burn the Cheetahs, the
- 2:00:05Cheetahs. I like it.
- 2:00:06They shape as you said that they get that.
- 2:00:10They get that prey in their mouth.
- 2:00:11They going I like it. I this is the one that this is
- 2:00:16the one that you said is a little more nuanced so that you
- 2:00:18get a little more new and this is something that I'm glad to
- 2:00:21see from a guy that we've I feel like we need to see it from.
- 2:00:25All right, so the play we got a shotgun doubles Wings tight
- 2:00:28left. It's going to be a split Zone.
- 2:00:31Play action Sprint, X cross and we're going to see just a
- 2:00:37standard incomplete pass, but I want you to watch Keller.
- 2:00:40Where is he on this? Well first, you see there?
- 2:00:44Okay, yeah, all right. So this and this is, this is a
- 2:00:51linebackers are in zone. Here is just to give you a
- 2:00:53little heads-up. So watch the play.
- 2:01:00This is just a little thing. It's not a big thing.
- 2:01:02That's a little thing. So you got the split Zone Titans
- 2:01:09coming across. He's not blocking though, he's
- 2:01:11going down the route. He see Keller's kind of pressing
- 2:01:16that a little bit. Watch him, pass this off and
- 2:01:19give some depth right there. And he does just enough to make
- 2:01:24that window a lot tighter. For that throw where he's got a
- 2:01:29sale at high instead of throwing it out in front, right?
- 2:01:33Al Jennings. Is it what if drones can deliver
- 2:01:36that out in front? It's the egg could be a complete
- 2:01:40pass. You know, it's still good
- 2:01:42coverage but you put it in a spot where it's easier to catch
- 2:01:45you throw it high and little bit in, you know, now it's
- 2:01:48incomplete pass. So that's just a little bit
- 2:01:52little Nuance. There showing how a guy that has
- 2:01:56shown athletic ability but didn't always pick up the
- 2:02:00concept of the defense as well as they would like to last year.
- 2:02:04That's showing growth by Keller there.
- 2:02:06So I like that, I wanted to kind of highlight that a little bit
- 2:02:09nice. And last one here, guys.
- 2:02:15Let's go. Before we wrap it up tonight.
- 2:02:17Yes sir! Yes, sir.
- 2:02:19This is from somebody who did not go to the portal.
- 2:02:24One of our young ends here is tobacco's.
- 2:02:28Yes, sir! Yes, sir.
- 2:02:29So we got shotgun. Why off trips, right?
- 2:02:33This is going to be a Duo RP. Slant.
- 2:02:36And you're going to see Burgos on a stunt, doesn't get home
- 2:02:41stays in the play, gets a tip forces of interception.
- 2:02:48I know that happened quick somewhere, run that back pretty
- 2:02:50slow here for you. We do not have it on screen yet.
- 2:02:59There we go. The burgers is outside.
- 2:03:10He stunting inside here. Can't get that.
- 2:03:16Get your hands up. The can't get their gets kind of
- 2:03:19called The Wash but sees the past gets his hand up, little
- 2:03:24tip that slows it down. Just enough.
- 2:03:27Looks like I mean that could have been incomplete.
- 2:03:29Could have been a Could have been a complete pass to Felton.
- 2:03:32They're coming across, but because of the tip slows in the
- 2:03:35traffic there and we got Mi Atlas getting an easy pick here.
- 2:03:40He's playing underneath of that slant because he's got help over
- 2:03:44the top. So as Felton breaks inside, he's
- 2:03:47kind of playing underneath that and right place, right time for
- 2:03:51that tip. Shout out our va's old deeper on
- 2:03:54our school miles. But that's all ladies and
- 2:04:00gentlemen, that's our 19 play, spring game breakdown, kind of
- 2:04:05going through some, some new faces, some wells, improvements
- 2:04:09scheme things, and a little bit of Defense.
- 2:04:12All right. Y'all know, let's just do a
- 2:04:15quick round brown. You've looked at it.
- 2:04:17What will get your opinion last here Sheldon?
- 2:04:19Just looking at this tape and just seeing some of the stuff
- 2:04:22more in-depth, Brian y'all brined.
- 2:04:26It also on this, he gave us some great notes to look at to as we
- 2:04:28were reviewing these things, kudos to him.
- 2:04:33What's the one thing? You feel good about going into
- 2:04:35the season now seeing this. Definitely the skill players.
- 2:04:40I mean, look at guys know, Holloway felt obviously
- 2:05:08She said you know, your place is one thing, but you got to get
- 2:05:11those those consistent, you know, employers Rican, you know,
- 2:05:14keypad this text from, don't stop on this fixed because that
- 2:05:17was a big issue last year. I think overall just the the the
- 2:05:21levels. And it's much better than last
- 2:05:23year. Tally.
- 2:05:27You have some of the to watch out and say it, man.
- 2:05:29It's kind of like, what I hit on earlier, just the wide receivers
- 2:05:34in the skill, Mike skill positions.
- 2:05:36I mean, we have a lot of different type past catches, you
- 2:05:41know. Some people do not afraid to go
- 2:05:43across the middle, some tight ends that can get some
- 2:05:46separations and tight ends. That can block some big
- 2:05:49receivers that can be possession.
- 2:05:50Receiver. So watching this, you kind of
- 2:05:52seen all that stuff on display and it's exciting.
- 2:05:56Yep. I'm with y'all on that, but I'm
- 2:05:58with its these guys going into the scheme, we're getting them
- 2:06:01into if there's going to be Creations where you saw that
- 2:06:05where that drag were Jennings of them a couple times those digs
- 2:06:08where it's boiling spaces, where throws can be made and when you
- 2:06:12break it down, like Brian did for us tonight and if you're
- 2:06:15listening to this on the podcast, I should have did this
- 2:06:17at the beginning. You got to go to YouTube, you
- 2:06:20gotta sync it up with YouTube if you're listening on the podcast
- 2:06:22to see the plays, But you see the manipulation the
- 2:06:28manipulation of how if these guys are coming up and making
- 2:06:31these easy throws, eventually you pop a couple of Slants a
- 2:06:35couple digs. They're going to start backing
- 2:06:37off right? And we think with tooting and
- 2:06:40Thomas I think we get to run game going from that Ron.
- 2:06:45What do you want to wrap it up with here for we call it?
- 2:06:49Yeah, the big thing for me just like you said the scheme is
- 2:06:51standing out because if you know if you're not using the The
- 2:06:55talent that you have, again, I'm glad that we're ratcheting up
- 2:06:58the town in the skill position. But if you're not going to get
- 2:07:00those guys, the ball in spaces where they can make plays, then
- 2:07:03you're still going to be a struggle.
- 2:07:04So I like to see the scheme is coming hand-in-hand with the
- 2:07:08ratchet up in in skill level and I think that's going to pay big
- 2:07:13dividends because, you know, we're already seeing some
- 2:07:16improvement without a full complement with the split
- 2:07:19roster, compared to what we saw last year.
- 2:07:23You know, we get we get a full Pomona First teamers out there
- 2:07:27and really kind of let some of the guys that had to sit for the
- 2:07:31spring game. Get out there and show what they
- 2:07:33can do. I feel like we got weapons all
- 2:07:35over the place now but with Benji coming on.
- 2:07:39We saw some good things from him to Spring Game.
- 2:07:42You know, you got right? That didn't even play.
- 2:07:44Yeah, laying the gameplay. I mean, you know, we got, we got
- 2:07:48skill guys that didn't even play.
- 2:07:50That are one of them being a big part of last year's offense.
- 2:07:53Comparatively Yeah and we saw we saw that much improvement.
- 2:07:57And like I said, I think the big thing is the scheme and not just
- 2:08:01like I was talking about with you seeing some new elements but
- 2:08:05also again it being cohesive. I feel like last year again it
- 2:08:10was a it was a mixed bag. There were pieces there, but
- 2:08:13nothing really fit together. I feel like we saw schemes that
- 2:08:17fit together and they were attacking the defense in a way
- 2:08:20that made sense in the way that put them in Conflict.
- 2:08:23Consistently That's always a key.
- 2:08:26Put them in Conflict, consistently.
- 2:08:28And with that being said, we go over two hours tonight.
- 2:08:32Thank y'all for watching us out there.
