Speaker 1: Let us pray. And he said, Thy name shall be
• 0:04
Speaker 1: called no more Jacob, but Israel. For as a prince
• 0:08
Speaker 1: hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

Speaker 1: Genesis 32.28 Dear God, as I reflect on my life,
• 0:21
Speaker 1: thank you, Lord, for the gift of reconciliation and forgiveness.
• 0:25
Speaker 1: Thank you that even in my wrongdoings you produce grace
• 0:29
Speaker 1: moments for me. Like Jacob in Genesis 32 and 33,
• 0:35
Speaker 1: I choose to believe the words of your angels that
• 0:38
Speaker 1: declare that here is the Lord's place. I declare that
• 0:43
Speaker 1: my life is the Lord's place. I declare that my
• 0:47
Speaker 1: business is the Lord's place and that my relationships are
• 0:51
Speaker 1: in the Lord's place. Therefore, I will not be afraid
• 0:55
Speaker 1: of seasons when I feel I am wrestling for a
• 0:58
Speaker 1: new identity, a new blessing, and a new beginning. I
• 1:03
Speaker 1: confess that I will hold on to you, God, until
• 1:07
Speaker 1: I receive my newness, and I will not let go
• 1:11
Speaker 1: even after you bless me. You are my waymaker, and
• 1:16
Speaker 1: you are the God that makes old things new. Thank you, Lord,
• 1:21
Speaker 1: that even in the midst of dysfunction, you still allow
• 1:25
Speaker 1: your glory to settle my differences and bring restoration to
• 1:29
Speaker 1: my life. Thank you for a new name of victory
• 1:34
Speaker 1: and a new purpose for my life, filled with all
• 1:38
Speaker 1: your many blessings. In Jesus' name, amen. Thanks for making
• 1:47
Speaker 1: prayer a priority in your life. To hear the Bible

Speaker 2: You are Israel. Before this story, we learned of Jacob
• 2:12
Speaker 2: fleeing the service of Laban. He packed his family and
• 2:15
Speaker 2: traveled back to Canaan. However, Laban would not let Jacob go.
• 2:20
Speaker 2: Jacob and Laban bore their souls before one another, sharing
• 2:24
Speaker 2: the anger that rested in both their hearts. Eventually, the
• 2:28
Speaker 2: two made peace, and Laban sent Jacob on his way.
• 2:33
Speaker 2: Now we will learn about Jacob entering into his homeland
• 2:36
Speaker 2: once again although he feared the wrath of his brother Esau.
• 2:40
Speaker 2: Wrestling with God, Jacob will cling to the blessings of
• 2:44
Speaker 2: God and get his name changed, inspired by the book
• 2:48
  Speaker 2: of Genesis.
• 2:50
Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
• 2:53
Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. Previously, we heard the story
• 2:58
Speaker 3: of how Jacob fled from Laban, a man who had
• 3:00
Speaker 3: wronged and deceived Jacob for many years. In the end,
• 3:05
Speaker 3: The two men made peace and Laban let Jacob go
• 3:07
Speaker 3: to Canaan, the land of Jacob's father, the land of promise.
• 3:12
Speaker 3: And Jacob took with him his wealth and a large family. Today,
• 3:17
Speaker 3: we'll see how Jacob enters his former homeland and seeks
• 3:20
Speaker 3: reconciliation with his brother Esau. If you remember their story,
• 3:25
Speaker 3: it was Jacob who was the cheater and trickster in
• 3:27
Speaker 3: that relationship. And when he fled more than 20 years
• 3:31
Speaker 3: before Esau, was filled with rage and murderous intent. As
• 3:37
Speaker 3: you listen to this passage of Scripture, imagine the fear
• 3:41
Speaker 3: with which Jacob stepped into this dangerous territory to face
• 3:45
Speaker 3: his brother Esau. Before he encounters Esau, he's going to
• 3:49
Speaker 3: face another man. But this is not just any man,
• 3:53
Speaker 3: and he isn't a stranger, as Jacob will discover. It
• 3:56
Speaker 3: is an encounter Jacob must have before he faces Esau,
• 4:00
Speaker 3: and It will be a life-changing turning point in his
• 4:04
Speaker 3: life and future. So pay close attention as Jacob and
• 4:09
Speaker 3: Esau finally face each other again. Will there be bitterness
• 4:12
Speaker 3: and bloodshed or renewal and reconciliation? Let's listen to God's
• 4:17
Speaker 3: word and find out.
• 4:20
Speaker 2: A familiar breeze blew through the valley below Jacob. The
• 4:24
Speaker 2: sweet summer air caressed the plains, causing the grass to dance.
• 4:29
Speaker 2: Jacob smiled and turned his face towards the sun. He
• 4:33
Speaker 2: was home again. Still a few miles away from Canaan,
• 4:37
Speaker 2: he then turned towards the hill he had set camp on.
• 4:40
Speaker 2: Angels of the Lord had met him there. Already, Jacob
• 4:44
Speaker 2: knew that something holy and peculiar was taking place. This
• 4:48
Speaker 2: is God's camp, Jacob acknowledged. The last time Jacob was there,
• 4:54
Speaker 2: he had run away in fear of his brother Esau.
• 4:57
Speaker 2: Esau had vowed to kill Jacob, so he left in
• 5:01
Speaker 2: hope that his brother's anger would subside. Jacob sent messengers
• 5:05
Speaker 2: to go before him, saying, I have sojourned with our
• 5:08
Speaker 2: uncle Laban and have been there until now. I have oxen, donkeys, flocks,
• 5:14
Speaker 2: servants that I wish to share with you. I say
• 5:17
Speaker 2: all these things to find favor in your sight. Jacob's
• 5:23
Speaker 2: servants had sent Esau the message and waited on the
• 5:26
Speaker 2: outskirts of his land until to see what his response
• 5:29
Speaker 2: would be. Around the corner of the canyons, the messengers
• 5:33
Speaker 2: saw Esau coming out to meet with Jacob. Only behind
• 5:37
Speaker 2: him was four hundred armed men. A great fear fell
• 5:41
Speaker 2: upon Jacob. He remembered how wild of a man Esau was,
• 5:45
Speaker 2: filled with power and tact. Jacob did not have the
• 5:49
Speaker 2: strength nor the men to defend himself. Jacob prepared for
• 5:53
Speaker 2: the worst. He divided his camp into two parties and
• 5:57
Speaker 2: sent them on opposite ends of one another. If Esau
• 6:00
Speaker 2: came to destroy one of the camps, the other would
• 6:03
Speaker 2: be spared. Jacob trembled before God. Fear was overcoming him,
• 6:09
Speaker 2: and he looked to heaven and said, God of my
• 6:12
Speaker 2: fathers Abraham and Isaac, you have told me to return.
• 6:16
Speaker 2: You desired for me to be here so that you
• 6:18
Speaker 2: might bless me. I am not worthy of your kindness
• 6:22
Speaker 2: or your provision. Jacob for perhaps the first time in
• 6:26
Speaker 2: his life, felt the full weight of God's love for him.
• 6:31
Speaker 2: You have shown me steadfast love and faithfulness. I began
• 6:36
Speaker 2: with nothing to my name except a staff, and now
• 6:39
Speaker 2: I have two camps that rely on me. Tears hit
• 6:43
Speaker 2: Jacob's trembling hands. Please, deliver me from the revenge of
• 6:49
Speaker 2: my brother. I fear him. and I fear for all
• 6:53
Speaker 2: the people here under my care. But you promised to
• 6:57
Speaker 2: bless me and to expand my offspring. I will trust you.
• 7:03
Speaker 2: Jacob lingered there for the night. He sent out droves
• 7:07
Speaker 2: of gifts of cattle, goats, and other livestock before him
• 7:10
Speaker 2: to gain favor with Esau. Yet there was no predicting
• 7:14
Speaker 2: how Esau would receive his gifts, for he pursued Jacob
• 7:18
Speaker 2: with four hundred men behind him. That same night, Jacob
• 7:24
Speaker 2: arose with his wives and eleven children and sent them
• 7:27
Speaker 2: across the stream of Jabbok. He sent them away to
• 7:30
Speaker 2: be safe with everything else he had in his possession.
• 7:34
Speaker 2: Jacob was left alone, until a man sprang up from
• 7:38
Speaker 2: behind him. Struggling in the mud and gravel, Jacob wrestled
• 7:41
Speaker 2: with this man in the dead of night. Sweat and
• 7:44
Speaker 2: blood dripping from his body, Jacob fought for his life
• 7:47
Speaker 2: under the weight of this unknown stranger. The night drew on.
• 7:51
Speaker 2: and the sun was beginning to rear its head between
• 7:54
Speaker 2: the hills. Jacob, while endeavoring with this man, became increasingly
• 7:58
Speaker 2: more aware of his divine nature. His wrestling match was
• 8:02
Speaker 2: not an assault, but an invitation. This is God's camp,
• 8:08
Speaker 2: echoed in his memory. Jacob, the once timid tent dweller,
• 8:12
Speaker 2: found himself grappling on the ground with God himself. Dawn
• 8:17
Speaker 2: peeked through the trees. The man saw that he would
• 8:20
Speaker 2: not prevail against Jacob. He touched his hip socket and
• 8:24
Speaker 2: jammed his hip out of its joint. Jacob screamed and
• 8:28
Speaker 2: released his legs from around the man. Yet he clung
• 8:31
Speaker 2: to him with his arms, refusing to let go. Let
• 8:35
Speaker 2: me go, for the day is broken, the man said. Jacob,
• 8:41
Speaker 2: who had spent his entire life making his own luck,
• 8:44
Speaker 2: was face to face with the end of himself. He
• 8:48
Speaker 2: had deceived his brother into selling his birthright, he had
• 8:51
Speaker 2: tricked his father into blessing him, and he had swindled
• 8:54
Speaker 2: Laban into making him richer. Yet now Jacob was faced
• 8:59
Speaker 2: with God himself, and had no means to trick his
• 9:02
Speaker 2: way into victory. Jacob's eyes closed tightly, and he flexed
• 9:07
Speaker 2: his arms firmly to the legs of this man and said,
• 9:10
Speaker 2: I will not let you go unless you bless me.
• 9:14
Speaker 2: A slight smile came across the man's face. What is
• 9:18
Speaker 2: your name? he asked. Jacob, he shouted in pain. You
• 9:24
Speaker 2: shall no longer be called Jacob, he said, but Israel,
• 9:28
Speaker 2: for you have wrestled with God and with men, and prevailed. Please,
• 9:34
Speaker 2: tell me your name, Jacob asked. Now a full smile
• 9:38
Speaker 2: filled his face. Why is it that you ask my name?
• 9:42
Speaker 2: he said, and he blessed him. So Jacob called that
• 9:46
Speaker 2: place Peniel, saying, I have seen God face to face,
• 9:51
Speaker 2: and yet my life has been spared. The sun's rays
• 9:54
Speaker 2: reflected off of the stream beside Jacob, and the warmth
• 9:58
Speaker 2: of the day began to dry the blue. and sweat
• 10:00
Speaker 2: off his body. Limping back to his camp, Jacob felt
• 10:04
Speaker 2: ready for whatever would come next. With the sun behind him,
• 10:09
Speaker 2: Jacob gazed upon the fields below. He could see Esau
• 10:13
Speaker 2: and his four hundred men creeping closer and closer. Still
• 10:17
Speaker 2: filled with an exhausted euphoria, Jacob hobbled towards his brother
• 10:21
Speaker 2: with his family traveling behind him. As the two drew nearer,
• 10:25
Speaker 2: Esau began running towards Jacob. He ran with fervor and power.
• 10:30
Speaker 2: The years had not taken away Esau's strength. Before Esau
• 10:35
Speaker 2: could catch Jacob, he fell to his knees and bowed
• 10:38
Speaker 2: before him. As a bear would, Esau wrapped Jacob up
• 10:42
Speaker 2: in his arms and embraced him. He kissed his neck
• 10:46
Speaker 2: and wept at the sight of his twin brother. The
• 10:49
Speaker 2: years had wiped his bitterness away, and all that remained
• 10:53
Speaker 2: was the affection of two twin brothers united after decades apart.
• 10:59
Speaker 2: Esau lifted his eyes past his brother towards Jacob's family.
• 11:03
Speaker 2: Who are these with you? Esau said. Jacob then introduced
• 11:07
Speaker 2: his family to Esau, and they embraced his kindred spirits.
• 11:12
Speaker 2: Why have you sent so many gifts? Esau asked. To
• 11:16
Speaker 2: earn your forgiveness, brother, please take them. Esau refused them
• 11:20
Speaker 2: at first, but Jacob insisted. Jacob knew that he had
• 11:24
Speaker 2: truly wronged his brother and felt the depths of what
• 11:27
Speaker 2: he had done. The two of them embraced again, and
• 11:31
Speaker 2: Esau forgave Jacob. Esau departed that same day, and Jacob
• 11:37
Speaker 2: settled in a place near Shechem and built an altar
• 11:40
Speaker 2: to God called El Elohe Israel, meaning the God of Israel.
• 11:47
Speaker 2: And Jacob built a new life for him and his family,
• 11:50
Speaker 2: a life of flourishing and love. Though sorrow would not
• 11:55
Speaker 2: remain a stranger to Jacob, God's love was present.
• 12:02
Speaker 3: After years of self-imposed exile, Jacob is finally going home.
• 12:08
Speaker 3: He's now a wealthy man and much older, and he
• 12:11
Speaker 3: has a large family. It seems that God's plan is
• 12:15
Speaker 3: to make a great nation from his family is beginning
• 12:18
Speaker 3: to take shape. However, there are matters to be dealt
• 12:21
Speaker 3: with first, and Jacob is not expecting to return home
• 12:25
Speaker 3: to a hero's welcome. Will his brother Esau's anger remain,
• 12:29
Speaker 3: or even worse, could it have grown stronger and more bitter?
• 12:33
Speaker 3: Jacob had run in fear from his problems. That's what
• 12:36
Speaker 3: he always did, run, because he was filled with selfish
• 12:40
Speaker 3: ambitions and deceptive in all his ways. We've been there,
• 12:44
Speaker 3: haven't we? We know when we have disobeyed God, messed up,
• 12:49
Speaker 3: and then there comes the time of consequences. The fact
• 12:52
Speaker 3: that we can't hide our sin any longer and it
• 12:55
Speaker 3: comes time to face the music. God wants to remind
• 12:59
Speaker 3: Jacob that even in this moment, he is not alone.
• 13:04
Speaker 3: So he sends angels to meet him on the outskirts
• 13:06
Speaker 3: of Canaan. Jacob sends messengers ahead to let Esau know
• 13:10
Speaker 3: that he's returned and that he is ready to share
• 13:13
Speaker 3: his accumulated wealth. Can you imagine the fear Jacob must
• 13:17
Speaker 3: have been feeling, just waiting to see how Esau would react?
• 13:21
Speaker 3: But notice that this time, rather than resorting to scheming
• 13:25
Speaker 3: and cleverness, Jacob goes to God in prayer. He turns
• 13:30
Speaker 3: the problem over to God. Jacob acknowledges God's presence and
• 13:34
Speaker 3: how unworthy he was of the faithfulness and the blessing
• 13:37
Speaker 3: of the Almighty. Then he made his honest petition, openly
• 13:41
Speaker 3: telling God of all his fears and reminding God of
• 13:45
Speaker 3: his promise to bless the nations through him. So now
• 13:49
Speaker 3: we're seeing a much more mature and reverent Jacob than
• 13:53
Speaker 3: we've seen before. He's now truly humble. And knowing how
• 13:57
Speaker 3: much he owes Esau for his treachery, Jacob sends three
• 14:01
Speaker 3: lead parties ahead, filled with gifts of livestock, to meet Esau.
• 14:06
Speaker 3: What he does next is yet another sign of Jacob
• 14:09
Speaker 3: embracing the mantle of leadership and role of protector of
• 14:12
Speaker 3: his family. He guides him across the river and then
• 14:15
Speaker 3: returns alone to camp. It's only him now, exposed and vulnerable.
• 14:22
Speaker 3: That very night there is a battle, but not with
• 14:25
Speaker 3: his estranged brother. The Lord himself wrestles with Jacob. Jacob
• 14:31
Speaker 3: stubbornly refused to quit or to give up. Even after
• 14:35
Speaker 3: God touched his hip and threw it out of socket,
• 14:38
Speaker 3: Jacob would not relent or let go of his opponents.
• 14:41
Speaker 3: This is one of the most fascinating scenes in all
• 14:44
Speaker 3: the Bible. He doesn't recognize this stranger he is wrestling
• 14:48
Speaker 3: with as God, but he knows there's something very special
• 14:51
Speaker 3: about him. In the Gospel of Luke, we find a
• 14:54
Speaker 3: story of the risen Christ walking on the road to Emmaus.
• 14:58
Speaker 3: His traveling companions did not recognize him for who he was,
• 15:02
Speaker 3: the risen Christ, but their hearts were strangely warmed. They
• 15:05
Speaker 3: knew something was different. Was Jacob's heart also warmed? Jacob
• 15:11
Speaker 3: agrees to only release his opponent if the man will
• 15:14
Speaker 3: bless him. He cries out for the blessing of God.
• 15:18
Speaker 3: But before God gives him the blessing, he gives him
• 15:21
Speaker 3: a new name. And this new name has great significance. Jacob,
• 15:26
Speaker 3: the cheater, will now be called Israel, the prince of God,
• 15:30
Speaker 3: because he wrestled with God and did not quit. Jacob
• 15:34
Speaker 3: leaves that encounter with a brand new name, but also
• 15:37
Speaker 3: a limp as a reminder of that night forever. When
• 15:41
Speaker 3: we truly encounter God, it will change us in ways
• 15:44
Speaker 3: that we cannot understand or even possibly sometimes imagine. And
• 15:49
Speaker 3: it will bless us in ways we cannot foresee. That
• 15:53
Speaker 3: very day, Jacob finally meets Esau and reconciliation occurs. The
• 15:58
Speaker 3: Lord God had gone before Jacob, now Israel. It was
• 16:02
Speaker 3: not the shower of gifts that softened Esau's heart, but
• 16:05
Speaker 3: God's grace. Jacob is now humble and repented. making no
• 16:10
Speaker 3: excuses for his actions. Esau, for his part, makes no
• 16:14
Speaker 3: attempt to take advantage of his upper hand. There's no
• 16:18
Speaker 3: more need for hate, no more need for running, no
• 16:22
Speaker 3: more need for separation. Now there is peace. The two
• 16:26
Speaker 3: brothers embrace, and Esau forgives Jacob. As Esau departs, Jacob, Israel,
• 16:35
Speaker 3: builds an altar to remember God's faithfulness. The altar is
• 16:38
Speaker 3: called the God of Israel, for that is who God is.
• 16:43
Speaker 3: Dear God of Israel and of all nations, the God
• 16:46
Speaker 3: and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for
• 16:50
Speaker 3: being the God who wrestles with his children and blesses them.
• 16:54
Speaker 3: Just as you bless Jacob for clinging to you, may
• 16:57
Speaker 3: you bless us as we turn to you, trust you,
• 17:00
Speaker 3: and never let go. Thank you for this beautiful story
• 17:04
Speaker 3: of unification between brothers and the hope that shines through
• 17:08
Speaker 3: into our broken relationships. Help us to trust you to
• 17:12
Speaker 3: go before us in our relationships, just as you did
• 17:15
Speaker 3: for Jacob and Esau. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
