- 0:54Speaker 2: helps us out, gets us out there more visibility. Today's
- 0:59Speaker 2: topic is identity. Austin, I want to start with one
- 1:09Speaker 2: question for you. Take the red end off of those
- 1:13Speaker 2: white helmets and put us in some plain white jerseys.
- 1:20Speaker 2: There's twenty plays that you get to watch for Nebraska.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Can you tell me what program you're watching?
- 1:27Speaker 3: Sin's that's an interesting question.
- 1:34Speaker 4: If it's on Halloween, they're gonna be black helmets with
- 1:37Speaker 4: the horrible reflector red.
- 1:41Speaker 3: We can circle back to that at some point.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Uh, it depends on which team, because it's I was
- 1:49Speaker 4: thinking about this the other day because Temple.
- 1:52Speaker 3: I was watching it. I was watching the New.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Jack Reacher season, which is okay for those of you
- 1:56Speaker 4: interested on Amazon Prime. I don't know if anyone watches it,
- 1:59Speaker 4: but it's fine. But one of the kids, the son
- 2:03Speaker 4: of the person who kills themselves, plays a temple, and
- 2:07Speaker 4: I was.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Thinking about it, and.
- 2:10Speaker 4: One there were times last year where it just felt
- 2:14Speaker 4: like we weren't like, we weren't not not we just
- 2:16Speaker 4: weren't a big program, and so I thinking about the
- 2:19Speaker 4: players that we're calling and it just kind of felt disheveled.
- 2:26Speaker 3: I think I think it got a little bit more clear.
- 2:28Speaker 4: When Rayola went out. Uh, but what team are we
- 2:33Speaker 4: to take the end off? Where a team I said,
- 2:36Speaker 4: if you if you ask based off the bowl game,
- 2:39Speaker 4: we're a team that we're going to run the ball
- 2:41Speaker 4: because we don't have any offensive firepower behind the line
- 2:44Speaker 4: to throw it.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Because that's what we tried to do and it did
- 2:47Speaker 3: not work. Yeah, it just I don't know. I genuinely
- 2:56Speaker 3: don't know.
- 2:57Speaker 4: We've been a little familiar y with with whatever players
- 3:00Speaker 4: we can have. Last year we were much more much
- 3:04Speaker 4: more of the team that's like, Okay, we're gonna try
- 3:05Speaker 4: to run the ball three times or do a short pass.
- 3:11Speaker 4: You know, the conservative offenses that kind of dink and
- 3:14Speaker 4: dump their way down the field. And honestly, our offense
- 3:17Speaker 4: wasn't bad last year. You look at the numbers. It
- 3:20Speaker 4: just didn't feel great because we lost a lot of
- 3:22Speaker 4: games by a lot of points that we wanted to win.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I think that's what we are. I think we're a
- 3:28Speaker 3: conservative offense. Well.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I think the fact that.
- 3:33Speaker 2: He struggled to answer that question, I think is a
- 3:37Speaker 2: good segue into our conversation today.
- 3:41Speaker 1: And what this identity means. So to me, when I'd
- 3:47Speaker 1: say identity, I.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Don't I necessarily don't think like play callins. I guess
- 3:53Speaker 2: a part of it, but I don't think about you know,
- 3:55Speaker 2: what formation are we in?
- 3:59Speaker 3: Part?
- 3:59Speaker 2: Part of that is you know, I think identity is
- 4:01Speaker 2: part it's part of your scheme, like your scheme's part
- 4:03Speaker 2: of it.
- 4:03Speaker 1: But I do think identity is deeper than that.
- 4:06Speaker 2: It's your if your football like constitution on how how
- 4:11Speaker 2: do you believe football games are?
- 4:13Speaker 1: One?
- 4:15Speaker 3: And and?
- 4:15Speaker 2: And to me, I see like two extremes with it.
- 4:18Speaker 2: One and you touched on this already. One is I
- 4:22Speaker 2: have a system.
- 4:23Speaker 1: It works. I don't care who is a part of it.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I'm doing this and this is what I believe.
- 4:31Speaker 2: In the other extreme is every year you take players
- 4:35Speaker 2: that you have on your roster and I'm going to
- 4:39Speaker 2: run what fits them the best and what I believe
- 4:41Speaker 2: fits them the best. I think the truth lies somewhere
- 4:46Speaker 2: in the middle of that, and I lean more. You
- 4:50Speaker 2: know how, you have to have an identity to believe
- 4:53Speaker 2: what you do, so that way you can recruit the
- 4:55Speaker 2: players to fit that identity. If you don't have an
- 5:00Speaker 2: then you're just trying to fit your players. I don't
- 5:03Speaker 2: think that's a smart room.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Now.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Some coaches do that, and I think you saw maybe
- 5:08Speaker 2: a version of that with with Dylan Royal last year.
- 5:10Speaker 2: So like, where are you at on that spectrum?
- 5:14Speaker 4: Overall, the spectrum being we have no just if you
- 5:21Speaker 4: were a coach, like, I'm definitely more if you're saying,
- 5:27Speaker 4: you know, we have something, that's what we do, and
- 5:29Speaker 4: then the other one is we're total chameleon to our players.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I'm definitely more on that. If we this is what
- 5:35Speaker 3: we do.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Like I want to be, you know, and you find
- 5:37Speaker 4: I find myself that way, like when I play two
- 5:43Speaker 4: K when I'm playing you know, managers like I want
- 5:45Speaker 4: to be. I want to be big, physical, you know,
- 5:48Speaker 4: my guys, I'm not going to be the space and
- 5:50Speaker 4: pace offense. I'm gonna have big post players that I
- 5:54Speaker 4: like using. And I want to be defensive base, you know,
- 5:56Speaker 4: because that's how I.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Just like, that is your identity.
- 5:59Speaker 3: That's that's I liking two kids. I like him man,
- 6:01Speaker 3: And you know it.
- 6:03Speaker 4: There's just like a there's a certain way in which
- 6:05Speaker 4: I like to play board games. It's like I want
- 6:08Speaker 4: to be you know, I've played Risk Legacy. For those
- 6:12Speaker 4: of you nerds out there who have played several rounds
- 6:15Speaker 4: of Risk Legacy, probably not any of anyone listening to
- 6:18Speaker 4: this podcast, but you know, it's always like I want
- 6:22Speaker 4: to be hard to kill and easy to move.
- 6:24Speaker 3: You know. That's that's always been kind of like my
- 6:26Speaker 3: board game preference.
- 6:28Speaker 4: And so like, you know, like I have like kind
- 6:30Speaker 4: of how I want to do things and I and
- 6:33Speaker 4: I'd say for football, it's definitely the same way I
- 6:35Speaker 4: want to be. I want to be primarily like big,
- 6:38Speaker 4: strong defense, tough to move, but flexible on the offensive side.
- 6:45Speaker 1: And and yeah, I think.
- 6:49Speaker 2: What what I believe to you know, having an identity,
- 6:52Speaker 2: A A a system, A belief on how you think
- 6:57Speaker 2: wins games, which is what you described. Then then it
- 7:00Speaker 2: the biggest reason why it matters is when you're building
- 7:03Speaker 2: a team, when you have the ability to build a team. Now,
- 7:05Speaker 2: at all levels of coaching in sports, you don't always
- 7:08Speaker 2: have that freedom. Obviously you go down to the high
- 7:10Speaker 2: school level, well it's changing a lot.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Now, but you don't. You're you're kind of given what
- 7:16Speaker 1: you got.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Now there's development in high school, so you can develop
- 7:19Speaker 2: people to your identity and what you believe in.
- 7:21Speaker 1: And coach to that.
- 7:23Speaker 2: But as far as the player's talents goes, you don't
- 7:26Speaker 2: have as much. Say NFL, I guess is kind of
- 7:31Speaker 2: I would say maybe college is probably maybe where you
- 7:33Speaker 2: have the most control because you really can pick and
- 7:35Speaker 2: choose your players as a coach more so now there's
- 7:39Speaker 2: there's general managers now and there's more.
- 7:41Speaker 1: But NFL, I mean.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Sometimes your coach, especially if you go to NBA, like
- 7:46Speaker 2: you're given what the owners and the gms and all
- 7:48Speaker 2: of the front office gives you, and you're you're in
- 7:51Speaker 2: charge of coming out, especially because coaches don't get some
- 7:53Speaker 2: long strings anymore in the NBA. In NFL, we are
- 8:05Speaker 2: slowly getting back here. I think I lost the connection
- 8:08Speaker 2: with Austin. I think we're back.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Yeah, We're We're back.
- 8:17Speaker 1: We're back.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Ah.
- 8:20Speaker 1: So yeah.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I guess the key thing is, I think in college
- 8:24Speaker 2: you your identity matters the most because you are truly
- 8:29Speaker 2: recruiting and getting players as a coach and as a
- 8:31Speaker 2: program to fit what you what you want. So uh,
- 8:38Speaker 2: I mean, I think the best example here is is
- 8:42Speaker 2: what Signette did in Indiana.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And it might not be getting.
- 8:46Speaker 2: A lot of the highest, most star recruits, but the
- 8:51Speaker 2: guys that he got from James, that he brought up
- 8:53Speaker 2: from James Madison and you know, brought into fill those
- 8:57Speaker 2: gaps were fitting exactly what he wanted.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Obviously it worked.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Now, I think that's an extreme, right and the Indiana thing,
- 9:03Speaker 2: as we've talked about, is been very impressive. We'll see
- 9:06Speaker 2: if he can do it in a third year. But
- 9:08Speaker 2: I think that's a little bit of an extreme of
- 9:11Speaker 2: how it worked, but also at the same time it
- 9:13Speaker 2: tells you it can work in today's environment in college
- 9:17Speaker 2: football if you know exactly what you want to win
- 9:20Speaker 2: football games, and you want to talk about the Signettianism's
- 9:24Speaker 2: his when you ask him, hey.
- 9:26Speaker 1: What what what what do you think is happening? Or
- 9:29Speaker 1: how do you win game?
- 9:29Speaker 2: And he lists off like fifteen one word answers like
- 9:32Speaker 2: that's his identity, that those are the things that he
- 9:35Speaker 2: believes in, and that's what he's recruiting to first players.
- 9:38Speaker 2: So all that being said, you you you started Austin
- 9:45Speaker 2: a little bit on your h philosophy. I guess on
- 9:49Speaker 2: what you thought, what.
- 9:53Speaker 1: What what if you had?
- 9:55Speaker 2: If you if you were data holders, and let's even
- 9:57Speaker 2: say an offensive coordinator, and if you want to talk
- 10:00Speaker 2: about defense too, like what's your what are the most
- 10:03Speaker 2: important things that you are preaching for your offense and
- 10:07Speaker 2: or defense?
- 10:08Speaker 1: If if you were in charge of a.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Team, most person things that I preached for the offensive defense.
- 10:18Speaker 3: I am. I'm more in the I am in the
- 10:22Speaker 3: run the ball group.
- 10:24Speaker 4: So I'm gonna preach the importance of no no negative plays,
- 10:29Speaker 4: like you know, if if they get we're not gonna
- 10:33Speaker 4: get tackled behind the line of scrimmage. We're gonna try
- 10:35Speaker 4: to move the ball forward, no negative plays, you know,
- 10:40Speaker 4: conservative aggressivism. It's like, hey, we're gonna take shots, but
- 10:43Speaker 4: we're gonna know when to take the shots. Uh. It's
- 10:54Speaker 4: like I just think that it's kind of funny. I'm
- 10:56Speaker 4: thinking back to like, you know, when when I play mad,
- 10:58Speaker 4: and what what do I want? You know, I want
- 11:01Speaker 4: my tight ends involved, I want my running backs, I
- 11:04Speaker 4: want my quarterback bobole. What Holger's industry preaching though, is, Hey,
- 11:10Speaker 4: this is you know we have we have a big
- 11:15Speaker 4: offensive line, and we had an old offensive line last year.
- 11:18Speaker 3: But you know this, I think.
- 11:22Speaker 4: We haven't seen any games played, but this is likely
- 11:26Speaker 4: going to be the best offensive line we've seen in
- 11:28Speaker 4: rules tenure. That could be optimistic and maybe misreading the situation,
- 11:34Speaker 4: but I think I think Holgerson is going to be
- 11:37Speaker 4: I know, Ema Johnson's gone, but we're going to do
- 11:39Speaker 4: the exact same thing last year, except we're going to
- 11:42Speaker 4: execute in the red zone.
- 11:43Speaker 3: I think that's what he's saying this year.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Yeah and yeah, I like your answer. I think actually
- 11:49Speaker 2: we're very similar in our identity.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I think Nebraska's point. I'll say this first, there's a.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Difference in speaking your identity and what you think you
- 12:03Speaker 2: want to do, which we are kings of that, as
- 12:06Speaker 2: we know here in Nebraska, of saying this is what
- 12:09Speaker 2: we're you know, this is who we are, and what
- 12:12Speaker 2: what you should be excited about from a fan.
- 12:14Speaker 4: Base where we're that person that in college that you
- 12:17Speaker 4: know they used to work out three times a week
- 12:19Speaker 4: in college, but now they're forty years old, they're like, oh, yeah,
- 12:22Speaker 4: I'm a big lifter and it's like you was last
- 12:24Speaker 4: wee List is like, well, you know, I have knee issues.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Like so it's a little bit we we've heard what
- 12:34Speaker 2: we believe. But I think there's the second part of
- 12:37Speaker 2: that obviously is seeing that execute on the field, because
- 12:42Speaker 2: you can you can say what you want. I mean,
- 12:44Speaker 2: we're we're believing in a running quarterback this year, right,
- 12:46Speaker 2: That's what was said. That wasn't said last year clearly
- 12:49Speaker 2: because if it was, we would have tried to get
- 12:51Speaker 2: Dylan to be a very different type of QB. So
- 12:57Speaker 2: so that that's where you're Obviously your identity can change,
- 12:59Speaker 2: but the lack of of what you exactly want as
- 13:03Speaker 2: a coach, I think matters.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I'm the same way like.
- 13:07Speaker 2: I You probably know, I want a mobile quarterback and
- 13:10Speaker 2: I'm running this mobile quarterback often and I'm recruiting multiple
- 13:14Speaker 2: guys that can also run this and this hits well
- 13:18Speaker 2: to us because I do think T J. Latif when
- 13:20Speaker 2: t J. Latif comes in this year, if he has to,
- 13:23Speaker 2: We're not. We don't have to change our entire offensive
- 13:25Speaker 2: system because we have the two guys that are that
- 13:27Speaker 2: are capable of doing that.
- 13:29Speaker 1: So I think it's a positive.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I think you are running the ball, you know, efficiently
- 13:36Speaker 2: enough so you can set up a play action passing
- 13:38Speaker 2: in a short passing game. I'm not it's it's a
- 13:41Speaker 2: grinded out approach. Yes, it's it's ugly like Iowa like
- 13:44Speaker 2: I think. Until you until you are a top five
- 13:48Speaker 2: team where you have the capability to get the best
- 13:51Speaker 2: athletes in the country and and exploit some things, you
- 13:54Speaker 2: have to set up a game plan that gives you
- 13:57Speaker 2: a chance to win against teams are just flat out
- 14:00Speaker 2: better than you, and that involves milking the clock, establishing
- 14:04Speaker 2: a run game, being able to be creative with your scheme. Defensively,
- 14:09Speaker 2: you know, you can go multiple ways of being very aggressive.
- 14:12Speaker 1: You have the bend but no break. We've gone down
- 14:14Speaker 1: that route. Obviously.
- 14:16Speaker 2: You can talk about the different formations man ver zone coverage.
- 14:20Speaker 2: You know, what do you more believe in there? I'm
- 14:23Speaker 2: I'm a big bend, don't break guy. And then once
- 14:25Speaker 2: you get to the red zone, you put the straps
- 14:27Speaker 2: on and and and go like let the offense mess up.
- 14:30Speaker 2: That's my belief on on defense and football. I'm not
- 14:35Speaker 2: I hate big plays, just they feel like a knife
- 14:38Speaker 2: in the.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Heart they are.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Now, that might mean you you're giving up a lot
- 14:44Speaker 2: of yards throughout the game. I get that, But but
- 14:47Speaker 2: I think you know you're really good teams. Maybe that
- 14:50Speaker 2: that that means you get to change to some things up.
- 14:52Speaker 2: But a lot of teams, when you're playing Nebraska in
- 14:55Speaker 2: the mirror, they're gonna mess up at some point.
- 14:58Speaker 1: So that's my thought on defense.
- 15:01Speaker 2: The last question before we jump into more Nebraska's here,
- 15:04Speaker 2: Like I, Austin, I want to ask I don't think
- 15:08Speaker 2: I've asked you this yet.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I've asked a lot of people.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Maybe I did name the four most important positions individual positions.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Uh and and this is part of your identity, right,
- 15:22Speaker 2: this will this will help define this on both offense,
- 15:26Speaker 2: and they can be offense or defensive positions. But if
- 15:28Speaker 2: you had to get the four best players of this
- 15:32Speaker 2: position in the country, what four positions would you pick?
- 15:36Speaker 4: So the way I'm getting to assess how I do
- 15:38Speaker 4: this is when I do I when I'm running.
- 15:41Speaker 3: A team on Madden.
- 15:42Speaker 4: So this is my typical approaches. I'm taking either an
- 15:48Speaker 4: elite defensive tackle or edge, you know. Round one, round two,
- 15:56Speaker 4: I'm probably taking a quarterback, and then round three and four,
- 16:00Speaker 4: I'm taking whatever two.
- 16:04Speaker 3: You know, if this is anything, I'm probably taking a
- 16:06Speaker 3: tackle in a center.
- 16:09Speaker 4: That's how I imagined, That's how I like to draft,
- 16:12Speaker 4: and that's probably what I do. If I know, if
- 16:15Speaker 4: I was a could have any four, that's those are
- 16:17Speaker 4: the four I want.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I so realign a lot with that, and I
- 16:24Speaker 2: think that speaks to the importance of a run game
- 16:26Speaker 2: and a strong offensive and defensive line.
- 16:29Speaker 1: You gotta have a playmaker.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I'm I'm going quarterback, center, edge, rusher, and probably a
- 16:35Speaker 2: middle linebacker for me, because to me, that's your quarterback
- 16:39Speaker 2: of your defense. So I think I think tackles in
- 16:43Speaker 2: their next wide receiver. I've been a little bit swayed
- 16:48Speaker 2: on I I.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Think it helps.
- 16:51Speaker 2: I don't know that it's necessarily a game changer, but
- 16:55Speaker 2: I do think having a good red wide receiver is
- 16:57Speaker 2: very impactful.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Running back some kind of the opposite on I think
- 17:01Speaker 1: you're running.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Backs, especially game committees are totally okay if you have
- 17:07Speaker 2: a really strong offensive line and the other position that's
- 17:10Speaker 2: kind of got brought up a lot when I've asked
- 17:12Speaker 2: is corner, And I agree having one is good. It
- 17:15Speaker 2: also kind of fits into your scheme a little bit.
- 17:18Speaker 2: I think some people are thinking we need a corner
- 17:20Speaker 2: to lock down an opposing team stud receiver. Well, that's
- 17:22Speaker 2: if you're playing strictly man all the time, like and
- 17:26Speaker 2: and that, and that's great. I mean, if that's what
- 17:28Speaker 2: you're you're thinking, I'm a more mix it up type
- 17:31Speaker 2: of person, keep them off balance. I'm playing a lot
- 17:33Speaker 2: more zone, different types of zone blitzes and all of that.
- 17:37Speaker 2: So anyways, mental identity here, I want to talk about
- 17:44Speaker 2: this a bit too. We talk a lot about strategy.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I also think you have to you have to remember
- 17:50Speaker 2: there's a culture side to your identity as well, in
- 17:55Speaker 2: how the players fit in. And this actually is fitting
- 17:58Speaker 2: because yesterday Tike Hayes, the Penn State Iowa Western former
- 18:05Speaker 2: from those two schools and now got brought on as
- 18:08Speaker 2: a running back here as we thought maybe would be
- 18:11Speaker 2: maybe a band aid for Makai Nelson. Mikai Nelson seems
- 18:15Speaker 2: to be playing and back with the team. And now
- 18:20Speaker 2: Tyke Hayes has been let go and and released. And
- 18:23Speaker 2: I don't know that that is because of anything that
- 18:26Speaker 2: he did or if it wasn't a culture fit, but
- 18:28Speaker 2: I'm just guessing that maybe it just didn't work out
- 18:31Speaker 2: well here with with the locker room and and and
- 18:34Speaker 2: I think having having your standard of what the locker
- 18:36Speaker 2: room is about and how you're handling players, For me,
- 18:41Speaker 2: the number one thing with identity there is is accountability.
- 18:44Speaker 1: And toughness, And to me, those two things kind of
- 18:46Speaker 1: go hand in hand.
- 18:48Speaker 2: I also think those words get thrown around everywhere, not
- 18:51Speaker 2: just in sports, but in in in the business world
- 18:54Speaker 2: and in life, and everybody has their own definition of
- 18:57Speaker 2: what those are and how to handle those and what
- 19:00Speaker 2: accountability means, how to hold somebody accountable.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I think all those things are are unique to the coach.
- 19:08Speaker 1: I think those things, to.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Me are our most important in a in a in
- 19:12Speaker 2: a culture, and an identity in the locker room.
- 19:16Speaker 4: I do think Matt Ruhle has done a decent job,
- 19:18Speaker 4: But whenever anyone interviews or talks, I feel like it's
- 19:22Speaker 4: it does come out through his players. You know, they
- 19:24Speaker 4: are all kind of saying the same thing, and I do.
- 19:27Speaker 4: I do think he hammers at home with them for
- 19:29Speaker 4: the most part, and.
- 19:32Speaker 3: As far as locker rooms go, it's been a pretty.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Uh what's I mean, drama free run over the last
- 19:41Speaker 4: four years. You know, there has been a lot of
- 19:48Speaker 4: incidents where it's like, oh man, how are we going.
- 19:51Speaker 3: To handle this?
- 19:51Speaker 4: He's been pretty swift and like, hey, this dude, this
- 19:55Speaker 4: dude's gone. You know, that's this isn't the tigy hazes
- 19:58Speaker 4: like the first guy and I beg.
- 20:00Speaker 3: On the why it's gone.
- 20:00Speaker 4: But you know, he's been He's been pretty consistent on
- 20:04Speaker 4: how he handles players internally.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Does it make you a little bit sick that there's
- 20:10Speaker 3: that part of you that just wishes you were Iowa?
- 20:13Speaker 2: Yeah, and you would to talk about an extreme of identities,
- 20:18Speaker 2: uh as we jump into Nebraska here and what our
- 20:21Speaker 2: identity is, Like I that's why I think a little
- 20:24Speaker 2: bit the hatred, not hatred, but his hatred.
- 20:27Speaker 3: But you just jealous.
- 20:29Speaker 2: It's a little bit of jealousy for me. It's a
- 20:31Speaker 2: little bit of like that's kind of what I believe
- 20:34Speaker 2: in now. I think there's things obviously to tweak it
- 20:36Speaker 2: and make it better, but like your your core substance
- 20:41Speaker 2: of what Kirk Farence has done in Iowa is kind
- 20:43Speaker 2: of what I would do a little bit if I
- 20:48Speaker 2: was a football coach.
- 20:49Speaker 4: And had the babe maybe a little better offensive decision,
- 20:53Speaker 4: but you know, I probably wouldn't have kept you know,
- 20:55Speaker 4: Brian around quite.
- 20:56Speaker 3: As long as I did. And I'm only putting up
- 20:58Speaker 3: you know, six points a game, but he.
- 21:01Speaker 1: And that maybe was a little family impact. I don't know,
- 21:04Speaker 1: but it just it.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Yeah, It's one of those things like now, so now
- 21:07Speaker 2: you look at Nebraska and this is the question, and
- 21:11Speaker 2: we're we'll talk a ton more about identity here for
- 21:14Speaker 2: for us as we can into the season and what
- 21:16Speaker 2: that means, because every year it seems like this comes up.
- 21:20Speaker 2: And I think that this identity question sometimes is becoming
- 21:24Speaker 2: media speaker or fans speak and coaches might say, oh,
- 21:28Speaker 2: it doesn't, it doesn't the you guys don't really understand,
- 21:32Speaker 2: like this is this is what we're dealing with.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Well to a.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Point, yes, but if you go just oversimplify it, like
- 21:39Speaker 2: if you don't know what you believe in as a coach,
- 21:41Speaker 2: like that's a problem and you have to know you
- 21:47Speaker 2: can't just every year take it more puzzle pieces and
- 21:49Speaker 2: try to fit them in on how they're gonna work.
- 21:51Speaker 2: So I think the question is, like, you we know
- 21:55Speaker 2: what Iowa is, right, like you you take the you
- 21:59Speaker 2: take the ugly gold off the black helmets of the
- 22:02Speaker 2: Iowa and watch them play.
- 22:04Speaker 1: You, Oh, that looks like Iowa football, like you could
- 22:07Speaker 1: you could say that Nebraska. That's where we don't know.
- 22:12Speaker 4: And what I would say, traditionally the it's kind of
- 22:16Speaker 4: like the universities have their identities. Traditionally we've been a
- 22:19Speaker 4: mobile quarterback, run heavy, and I would say mostly conservative defense.
- 22:25Speaker 3: I wouldn't say we've ever really been.
- 22:28Speaker 2: One of the most established pronounced identities in college football
- 22:32Speaker 2: history is the Nebraska option. Yes, and like that is
- 22:36Speaker 2: one like that if you started showing clips of that,
- 22:39Speaker 2: people be like, that's Nebraska in the nineties. That that
- 22:42Speaker 2: is very, very established of what that was and it
- 22:45Speaker 2: was built upon the pipeline and the weightlifting and these
- 22:50Speaker 2: big and then and then let's go, let's go to
- 22:52Speaker 2: a second identity. And it's also just a the black
- 22:55Speaker 2: Shirts on defense. That was the black Shirts itself was
- 22:58Speaker 2: an identity. And those are two different, right, The options
- 23:01Speaker 2: more schematic based identities black Shirts is not is not
- 23:04Speaker 2: a schematic. The black Shirts was a culture. The black
- 23:08Speaker 2: Shirts was a that that's an identity of who you were.
- 23:12Speaker 2: We've had it, and so that's what I'm saying, is
- 23:16Speaker 2: like we were so far away from that and gone
- 23:19Speaker 2: from that where I don't know where we're at now.
- 23:22Speaker 2: And that's the question we've been asking, and we've been
- 23:24Speaker 2: bouncing around and changing coordinators and changing schemes, and it
- 23:28Speaker 2: comes down to knowing what you want as a program,
- 23:31Speaker 2: as a head coach, and sticking to that recruiting guys
- 23:34Speaker 2: to that, because yeah, like any new coaching program, it
- 23:39Speaker 2: sucks when you're changing it because you you have to
- 23:41Speaker 2: try to get different types of people to fit that.
- 23:45Speaker 2: And yeah, you get a five star and Dylan Royola
- 23:48Speaker 2: in here, it makes it tough because you want to
- 23:51Speaker 2: get him in here, and maybe he doesn't fit what
- 23:53Speaker 2: you want. Well, now you've got to adjust everything and
- 23:55Speaker 2: it just throws everything off.
- 23:57Speaker 3: So I think it'll go for.
- 24:01Speaker 1: That's my Yeah, the general thought.
- 24:03Speaker 2: I just I just I don't I don't think we
- 24:05Speaker 2: know what we want and therefore, and I'm not saying
- 24:07Speaker 2: just rule this is gone you okay.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Scott Frost I.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Would say he's even been He was worse than the
- 24:13Speaker 2: rule of not knowing what the hell he wanted.
- 24:15Speaker 1: We went all over the board with him.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Now, what's funny is if you ask someone what's Matt
- 24:23Speaker 2: Ruhle's philosophy or identity, and you ask somebody what Scott Frost,
- 24:27Speaker 2: you would have a better answer with Scott Frost now
- 24:30Speaker 2: doesn't match what I think that it should be.
- 24:32Speaker 1: No note at all, but you can maybe.
- 24:34Speaker 2: At least define what he wants or what he wanted,
- 24:37Speaker 2: and he just didn't get the players and it didn't work.
- 24:40Speaker 3: I think I agree it's and I think that's kind
- 24:42Speaker 3: of rule is too. I mean, you know he.
- 24:44Speaker 4: Wants a bubble quarterback because when he first got here,
- 24:46Speaker 4: he's like I got Jeff Simms boom, and then we
- 24:49Speaker 4: got Dylan Real and he's like, I totally agree with
- 24:52Speaker 4: like that. Okay, this guy the number one quarterback, and
- 24:56Speaker 4: the recruit class was to come here like we're gonna
- 24:59Speaker 4: take him when you have arm talents, like we're gonna
- 25:02Speaker 4: figure this out, and we just didn't figure it out.
- 25:05Speaker 4: I mean part of that was he broke his leg
- 25:07Speaker 4: when maybe we were gonna figure it last year. Would
- 25:09Speaker 4: have been the year to figure it out, and we
- 25:10Speaker 4: had we brought it a coordinator to better fit him,
- 25:13Speaker 4: and you know, you put your chips in on a
- 25:16Speaker 4: guy and it didn't work. And I think this is
- 25:18Speaker 4: the year where it's like, okay, we're resetting, Like this
- 25:23Speaker 4: is what we wanted.
- 25:23Speaker 3: I wanted.
- 25:24Speaker 4: I want a mobile quarterback and on an offensive line.
- 25:26Speaker 4: We're gonna spend our money. That's the whole other thing
- 25:28Speaker 4: about it. It's either just it now you have to
- 25:31Speaker 4: spend money to establish our identity correct, which you know,
- 25:36Speaker 4: when you're paying your quarterback, however much we were paying,
- 25:38Speaker 4: don't that that impacts where you're spending money elsewhere. We've
- 25:42Speaker 4: talked about that money. But I do think this is
- 25:45Speaker 4: what Rule wants. A mobile quarterback and the big offensive line.
- 25:49Speaker 4: And on the defensive side, he wants a flexible defense,
- 25:53Speaker 4: like like that's why you think he was drawn to
- 25:57Speaker 4: the three through five, just that he move our pieces around.
- 26:01Speaker 4: Not quite the the all of our basketball players are
- 26:05Speaker 4: six foot seven and can pass the ball kind of defense.
- 26:08Speaker 3: But I do think that's kind of what more of
- 26:09Speaker 3: his vision is.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Well, like I said, we will talk a lot more
- 26:14Speaker 2: about this conversation here I think we said a really
- 26:18Speaker 2: good baseline and ground of what this means for Nebraska.
- 26:22Speaker 2: And because I want to leave you guys with this,
- 26:26Speaker 2: I think this is very important. Identity is not what
- 26:30Speaker 2: you put on a graphic and what you what you
- 26:32Speaker 2: say it is. It's what when opponents are out there,
- 26:35Speaker 2: it's what they're preparing for.
- 26:36Speaker 1: It's what recruits. When you're recruiting, it's what it's what
- 26:39Speaker 1: you're recruiting for.
- 26:40Speaker 2: And then when when a game is on the line
- 26:42Speaker 2: and you need to stop on third and four or
- 26:45Speaker 2: you need a first down on third and two, like,
- 26:47Speaker 2: it's what It's what your players are going to fall
- 26:49Speaker 2: back on and believe because that's what you've instilled in them.
- 26:51Speaker 2: So I don't think it's something you can necessarily announce
- 26:55Speaker 2: and put out there on a billboard and say this
- 26:57Speaker 2: is what Nebraska football is. You have to demonstrate it
- 27:00Speaker 2: until everybody else starts describing you that way and catches on.
- 27:04Speaker 1: And you are. Your gameplay and the.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Results dictate what your identity is by by going out
- 27:11Speaker 2: and winning football games. So it all still goes back
- 27:14Speaker 2: to that, and I think that that's what we're wanting
- 27:18Speaker 2: to see here in twenty twenty six. Real quick, I
- 27:25Speaker 2: know you mentioned the earlier. We do know the Halloween
- 27:30Speaker 2: game is the blackout game. It's Washington at home. You
- 27:35Speaker 2: get your tickets by Yet.
- 27:37Speaker 4: It sounds like we may be able to give a
- 27:39Speaker 4: ticket to any game whenever I want this year for
- 27:41Speaker 4: way cheaper.
- 27:42Speaker 3: I have not bought my tickets.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Well, I think my sign up for my basketball tickets
- 27:48Speaker 2: is tomorrow, so I might begin basketball tickets.
- 27:51Speaker 3: So that's there, you go.
- 27:53Speaker 1: That's maybe what the excitement is more for this year.
- 27:56Speaker 4: I'm I know we're talking football, but I am, well,
- 28:00Speaker 4: JaMarcus Lars isn't coming back two volleyball scrimmage.
- 28:05Speaker 3: We're gonna be so freaking good this year.
- 28:07Speaker 4: I know we have a really hard schedule and we're
- 28:10Speaker 4: not gonna go totally undefeated, and we'll probably break my
- 28:13Speaker 4: heart again in the you know, in the tournament. But
- 28:17Speaker 4: I am more excited for basketball volleyball than I have
- 28:19Speaker 4: for football. That being said, I am excited for football.
- 28:22Speaker 4: It's warm enough, but gosh, we're going to be so
- 28:26Speaker 4: freaking good for volleyball.
- 28:28Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Well, we'll let you do a little bit of a volleyball.
- 28:36Speaker 3: I'll get to it. Give us a preview.
- 28:39Speaker 4: We've got nine days before first match. I believe ten
- 28:42Speaker 4: days something like that.
- 28:44Speaker 2: And tomorrow we have Wacky Daki Wednesday, Oh boy, Tomorrow
