- 0:00Speaker 1: New research by A and Z shows eWeek owned commercial
- 0:03Speaker 1: entities are outpacing some of the country's largest corporations. The
- 0:07Speaker 1: data shows that Maori enterprises have fared better in the
- 0:09Speaker 1: economic downturn and are emerging in good shape. And it
- 0:13Speaker 1: follows an MB report earlier this year which showed the
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mari economy more than doubling in the five years to
- 0:18Speaker 1: twenty twenty three. So, doctor Jason Meeker is the professor
- 0:22Speaker 1: of Maori Management at Auckland University. Good mording to you,
- 0:25Speaker 1: Jason gold Andrew, what are they doing so well?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Well, I guess, I guess they're they're developing a scale,
- 0:39Speaker 2: a confidence and growing in their ability to you know,
- 0:46Speaker 2: to manage air sits and to grow sits of the
- 0:49Speaker 2: scale that they are. It's certainly it's through settlements. Tribes
- 0:57Speaker 2: are able to have been able to, you know, to
- 1:02Speaker 2: I guess, be in control of assets of that scale
- 1:05Speaker 2: that you know, and they and they're in the process
- 1:08Speaker 2: of really sort of catching up on a one hundred
- 1:11Speaker 2: and eighty years of development as a result of those settlements.
- 1:15Speaker 1: So many other many other, many many other you know,
- 1:19Speaker 1: other businesses, not Mali or e we led businesses. You know,
- 1:23Speaker 1: funded fund from the treaty settlements have had had terrible time,
- 1:27Speaker 1: but somehow Mary is doing well. And do they have
- 1:30Speaker 1: a trick to their business acumen?
- 1:33Speaker 2: Well, they're really they're really focused on being prudent, being
- 1:39Speaker 2: careful because you know, these settlements, these treaty settlements are
- 1:44Speaker 2: sort of full and final and this is there one shot.
- 1:48Speaker 2: So they they're really doing all they can to be careful,
- 1:54Speaker 2: to be but also to be innovative in terms of
- 1:57Speaker 2: how they manage these So they're increasingly being I guess
- 2:02Speaker 2: sort of taking the more hands on approach to managing
- 2:05Speaker 2: their assets, initially starting out as cash exits, but being
- 2:10Speaker 2: more involved in actively managing their assets and as a
- 2:15Speaker 2: result getting better. At ten.
- 2:17Speaker 1: They also have Maria authorities benefit from a concessionary tax
- 2:20Speaker 1: rate of seventeen and a half percent. Now that's lower
- 2:23Speaker 1: than the standard company tax rate. So is this actually
- 2:25Speaker 1: a proof that a lower corporate tax rate actually helps business?
- 2:31Speaker 2: The minor authority tax rate is lower than the standard
- 2:36Speaker 2: corporate tax rate because the you know, the beneficiaries that
- 2:41Speaker 2: their own shares and interests in Mardi Land tend to
- 2:45Speaker 2: have a lower marginal tax rate, and so it makes
- 2:50Speaker 2: sense for them to ev a concessionary text rate, and
- 2:56Speaker 2: so you know that's definitely of assistance to mary authorities
- 3:03Speaker 2: who are administering mary Land, which has a lot of
- 3:07Speaker 2: other kinds of challenges associated with it, including difficulties in
- 3:11Speaker 2: terms of access in finance and raising debt on Marty Land.
- 3:18Speaker 2: So you know, that's that's why we sort of have
- 3:23Speaker 2: that sort of different approach to mary authority tax rate.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Jason, thank you so much for your insight today. And yes,
- 3:29Speaker 1: I've had a bit to do with Tai Nui and
- 3:30Speaker 1: yet they do actually manage their assets very well. A
- 3:32Speaker 1: load of people are texting me right now. While if
- 3:35Speaker 1: you don't pay tax, obviously it's really easy for business.
- 3:37Speaker 1: But as I point out, Mario authorities are subject to
- 3:40Speaker 1: income tax laws like everybody else. They must file annual
- 3:43Speaker 1: income tax returns. Yes they do have a special concessionary
- 3:46Speaker 1: tax rate of seventeen point five percent, but yeah, they're
- 3:50Speaker 1: going for it, and that's that's a good thing for everyone.
