- 0:08The Book of Ruth begins in dark days, but even in
- 0:12the darkness, God was at work. Through loss,
- 0:15uncertainty, and unexpected turns, we discover
- 0:19a beautiful story of grace, redemption,
- 0:22and hope. Join Scott Pauley for this new study, The Gospel
- 0:26According to Ruth. Light for Dark Days.
- 0:37Have you heard the news? We hear so much information
- 0:42in this media age, the 24/7 news
- 0:45cycle, and frankly, so much of it is bad news
- 0:49in this corrupt culture. That's not going to go away. But have
- 0:53you heard the good news? Have you heard It echoes through the corridors of time
- 0:57to this present hour. Do you know what it is?
- 0:59God is at work, that God
- 1:03is able, that God is more than enough.
- 1:06We're in Ruth chapter number 1, and we've been walking through
- 1:10the famine with Elimelech and Naomi and Ruth and learning not
- 1:14to operate in the flesh, not to live in fear, but to respond in faith.
- 1:18And before we go any further, I'd like to back up if I may for
- 1:22a moment, to a fascinating verse. I think it's important
- 1:25to realize that the famine is the start of the story,
- 1:28but it is not the end of the story. Remember I said to
- 1:32you already, the famine is not going to last forever. God's going to last forever.
- 1:36Now this chapter opens with the famine, but it closes with a harvest.
- 1:41In fact, if you get to the end of chapter 1, the last phrase
- 1:44of chapter 1 is in the beginning of barley harvest.
- 1:48So we've moved now from a time of no bread to a time
- 1:52of lots of bread, a new beginning. The chapter is going
- 1:56to pass. There's a little verse that I alluded
- 2:00to as we read over it, and I said we'll come back to this verse.
- 2:03I don't want to, to miss it. I don't want you to miss it.
- 2:07It is verse number 6. What was the
- 2:11thing that prompted Naomi's return to Bethlehem?
- 2:14What was the reason that she arose to start with,
- 2:18and Ruth went along with her, and they made their way out of Moab.
- 2:22Look at verse number 6. The Bible says she arose with her daughters-in-law that she
- 2:26might return from the country of Moab, for she
- 2:30had heard in the country of Moab how
- 2:35that the Lord had visited his people in giving them
- 2:38bread. You remember, 10 years previous Her husband
- 2:42Elimelech had left Bethlehem to go down to Moab searching
- 2:46for bread because they had heard
- 2:50that things were just going to be really bad in Bethlehem and they
- 2:54shouldn't stay there. And what a contrast.
- 2:58In verse number 1, you've got a man taking his, his cues
- 3:02from the news, getting his news from the world
- 3:05and the culture and circumstances. But in verse number 6,
- 3:09You have a woman who is taking her news from the report
- 3:14she hears, from the word that has been spread, from the good
- 3:17news. You know, in an age where there's so much bad
- 3:21news and so much evil reports, so much wickedness,
- 3:26I think it's a tremendous application to us that we should be
- 3:30listening what it is the Lord wants to say to us, what it is God
- 3:33is up to in this world. Have you heard Let me give you 2 or
- 3:373 things that I think we must hear from this story before we go any
- 3:40further. Number one, I hope you'll hear that the Lord visits his
- 3:43people in the darkest days. Our God,
- 3:47who is light and in him is no darkness at all,
- 3:50knows what is in the darkness, and he has a way of piercing the
- 3:55darkness. Remember Genesis chapter 1? God said light, and there was light,
- 3:59and it was very good. And I know in Ruth chapter 1 these are dark
- 4:02days But there is light. There is some good news
- 4:06in the midst of this darkness. Isn't that always how the
- 4:10Lord works? Do you remember in the Exodus from Egypt, when did he bring them
- 4:14out? In the nighttime hour of Israel,
- 4:17in the dark days of their bondage in Egypt.
- 4:21Read the book of Exodus again. That's the Old Testament example. Then come to
- 4:25the New Testament. When did Christ come? When did Messiah show up on the scene?
- 4:28Read Read Luke chapter number 1. Those who sat in darkness have seen
- 4:32a great light. You see, the Lord knows his people and
- 4:36he knows right where they are. God knows your address.
- 4:40And aren't you glad the Lord makes house calls? And he makes house calls at
- 4:44all hours. And maybe it's the midnight of your life right now.
- 4:48The Lord visits his people in the darkest days.
- 4:52Have you heard? Have you heard, number 2, that the
- 4:55Lord gives bread in the direst circumstances.
- 4:59You see, bad things will happen even in
- 5:03good places. Bethlehem is a demonstration
- 5:06of that, because bad things happen in every place. But I
- 5:10would also point out to you that good things can happen in
- 5:14bad circumstances. Here they are sitting
- 5:17in Moab. Here they are sitting in a pagan land.
- 5:21Here they are, 3 widows just absolutely
- 5:25at the bottom of it, and yet God is giving bread.
- 5:30I'm remembering now how God gave that manna in the wilderness.
- 5:35Jesus came, John chapter 6, and said, I am the bread
- 5:39of life. Oh, the Lord always satisfies the hungry
- 5:43heart. Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they
- 5:47shall be filled. Psalm 132, verse number 15, I will abundantly
- 5:50bless her provision. I will satisfy her poor with bread.
- 5:54Are you poor today? Oh, the Lord's got enough bread for you, bread enough and
- 5:58to spare. Come to the Lord. Have you heard the
- 6:02Lord visits his people in the darkest days? Have you heard the
- 6:07Lord gives bread in the direst circumstances? Have you
- 6:11heard the Lord sends the message of hope to the most distant
- 6:15people? You remember they're in Moab, they're a long ways,
- 6:19and they are back toward the wilderness. And they're not only
- 6:23quite a distance geographically, but chronologically, 10 years
- 6:27have been wasted. 10 years gone. Maybe I'm talking
- 6:31to someone right now. You feel like you're a long ways from God.
- 6:35I want to tell you, God's not a long ways from you. No, he's trailed
- 6:39you. He's followed you. He's been pursuing you. Turn around.
- 6:42You'll see him there. He's waiting on you. You, you think,
- 6:46I'm so far from God. He's as close as your breath.
- 6:51He is as close as a prayer. Lord,
- 6:54help me. He's there. Maybe you think, but I've
- 6:57wasted so much time. Well, sin does that.
- 7:01The old adage of sin takes you farther than you want to go,
- 7:04keeps you longer than you want to stay, costs you more than
- 7:08you want to pay. Boy, that's Naomi's story, isn't it? But I'm glad
- 7:12to tell you that scripture reveals that our God can restore even the years the
- 7:16locusts have eaten. Maybe the plagues have broken through on your life and consumed everything,
- 7:20and you think your life is eaten up. But I want to remind you
- 7:23that no matter where you are in Moab, no matter how many years you are
- 7:27removed, the Lord is visiting his people. The Lord
- 7:31is giving bread. This is what everybody
- 7:35needs to hear. Proverbs 25 and verse number 25 comes
- 7:39to mind: As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news
- 7:43from a far country. I want to tell you that when Naomi heard
- 7:47the report from her hometown that they had bread again, that was good news
- 7:52from a far country. Isn't it just like the Lord to send good news when
- 7:56we're in a bad mess? Romans 2,
- 7:59verse 4 says the goodness of God leads us to repentance.
- 8:04Maybe, maybe it's you that needs to hear it. Maybe you're a long
- 8:07ways from God. Maybe you're in the mess that your own sin
- 8:11has produced. I want to tell you, God is good.
- 8:15God is enough. God is able. Have you heard?
- 8:19Then repent and do exactly what Naomi did and return
- 8:24and come to the Lord. Stop listening to your,
- 8:28your own thoughts and stop listening to the accuser of the brethren and stop
- 8:31listening to everybody else in the world around you and listen to the Lord.
- 8:34The Lord is visiting his people.
- 8:37Don't miss him as he passes by. And then if
- 8:41you've heard and you say, yes, yes, I know the good news, wonderful, I would
- 8:44ask you this: have others heard? You see, those who have heard have to tell
- 8:48others. There's a Ruth near you, Naomi. There's, there's somebody close
- 8:52to you that needs to hear you speak the
- 8:56word of God. Romans chapter 10 talks about the word of faith
- 8:59being nigh thee, even in thy mouth and in thy heart, the word of faith
- 9:02which we preach. Look, if you've heard it, then tell it.
- 9:06Let somebody else hear. How shall they believe if
- 9:10they've never heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher.
- 9:14She had heard in the country of Moab how the Lord had visited his people
- 9:18in giving them bread. I want to stop and say, praise God,
- 9:21we have heard. Now let's tell someone
- 9:25else. Thank you
