- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Hey guys, welcome to the midweek unpack for Holding It Together Kinda.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: I'm Michael Makniak.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: On our full weekly episodes, we bring on experts, advocates, frontline workers to break down the heavy stuff, the legal mazes, the medical systems, the messy realities of caregiving.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: But on these short midweek sessions, it's just you and me.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Today I want to step back to a conversation that hits so many families right where they live.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: That's the uh Daughter's Guide to Dementia and Caregiver Burnout Recovery episode featuring Carmen Jenkins that we did.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: And that we talked about role reversal, the uh disorienting shift when you suddenly become the coordinator, the financial helper, the safety planner for that parent who raised you.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: And that awkwardness.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: One thing certainly becomes crystal clear.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Listening to an episode while driving or handling chores is a great start, but actually processing the emotional weight of caring for a parent with dementia is where real survival happens.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: This is real life.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: When we aired that episode, we didn't have our companion pamphlets ready yet.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: We went back and we built one specifically for this episode.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: And it's available to you right now.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: This is not supposed to be homework, this is not assignments, this is not another thing that you have to do.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: It's just short ways for you to process what we talk about, maybe memorialize some things that resonate with you, and examine what's actually going on beneath the noise that you're hearing.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Um, just so you know, this was one of our, if not our biggest, it's certainly one of our most downloaded episodes.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: So, how does this work?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: I want to look directly at the central premise of this week's companion guide.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: It it basically lays down a core truth that dementia can reverse roles, stretch families across distance, and create grief long before death.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Sustainable care requires honest limits, coordinated support, and specific requests.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: That specific request is a theme that's come up several times in this podcast.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: And we have to talk about the role reversal.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: It it asks you to name what you're carrying emotionally.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Name it, give a name, call it out.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Is it guilt, fear, safety issues?
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Is it the loss of the relationship?
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Is it resentment?
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: We also look at the long-distance care.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: We're such a transient society now that many of us live far away and we have to do this over the phone or over Zoom or whatever.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Burnout is not proof that you do not love your parent, it's just the opposite.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: It's information that the current care plan is asking more than one person can sustainably carry, and therefore, you transfer that love into real action.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: So we built these companion pamphlets for you.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: It's not about being perfect, it's about you putting pen to paper and processing what you need to do in terms of the next day, the next seven days.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: So, whether you listen to a daughter's guide to dementia back when it first aired or not, you can go back now and listen to the episode with this guide in hand.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Uh, just download the PDF right now, it's linked directly into the show sheet, uh, the show notes here.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Until next time, guys, just keep holding it together, even if it's just you know, kinda.
