  SPEAKER_00: Jacob and Bethel God said to Jacob, Go to the town of Bethel.

  SPEAKER_00: That is where I appeared to you when you were running away from your brother Esau.

  SPEAKER_00: Live there and make an altar to honor me as El, the God who appeared to you.

  SPEAKER_00: So Jacob told his family and all the other people with him, destroy all these foreign gods that you have.

  SPEAKER_00: Make yourselves pure, put on clean clothes, we will leave here and go to Bethel.

  SPEAKER_00: There I will build an altar to the God who has always helped me during times of trouble.

  SPEAKER_00: So the people gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had, and they gave him all of the rings that they were wearing in their ears.

  SPEAKER_00: He buried everything under an oak tree near the town called Shechem.

  SPEAKER_00: Then Jacob and his sons left that place.

  SPEAKER_00: The people in the surrounding cities wanted to follow and kill them, but God billed with them with such great fear that they did not go after them.

  SPEAKER_00: So Jacob and his people went to Luz, which is now called Bethel.

  SPEAKER_00: It is in the land of Canaan.

  SPEAKER_00: Jacob built an altar there.

  SPEAKER_00: He named the place El Bethel.

  SPEAKER_00: Jacob chose this name because that is the place where God first appeared to him when he was running from his brother.

  SPEAKER_00: They buried her under the oak tree at Bethel.

  SPEAKER_00: God said to him, I am God all powerful, and I give you this blessing.

  SPEAKER_00: Other nations and other kings will come out of you.

  SPEAKER_00: I gave Abraham and Isaac some special land.

  SPEAKER_00: Now I give the land to all your people who will live after you.

  SPEAKER_00: Jacob set up a memorial stone there.

  SPEAKER_00: He made the rock holy by pouring wine and oil on it.

  SPEAKER_00: This was a special place because God spoke to Jacob there, and Jacob named the place Bethel.

  SPEAKER_00: Rachel dies giving birth.

  SPEAKER_00: Jacob and his group left Bethel.

  SPEAKER_00: Before they came to Ephrath, Rachel began giving birth to her baby.

  SPEAKER_00: When her nurse saw this, she said Don't be afraid, Rachel, you are giving birth to another son.

  SPEAKER_00: Before dying, she named the boy Benoni, but Jacob called him Benjamin.

  SPEAKER_00: Rachel was buried on the road to Ephrath, that is Bethlehem.

  SPEAKER_00: Israel stayed there for a short time.

  SPEAKER_00: While he was there, Reuben slept with Israel's slave woman Bilha.

  SPEAKER_00: Israel heard about this and was very angry.

  SPEAKER_00: The family of Israel Jacob These are the names of Jacob's twelve sons.

  SPEAKER_00: His firstborn was Reuben, whose mother is Leah.

  SPEAKER_00: Jacob's other sons by Leah were Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.

  SPEAKER_00: Jacob went to his father Isaac at Mamre in Kirath Arba, Hebron.

  SPEAKER_00: This is where Abraham and Isaac had lived.

  SPEAKER_00: Isaac lived one hundred and eighty years, then Isaac became weak and died, and he went to be with his people.

  SPEAKER_00: He had lived a long, full life.

  SPEAKER_00: His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
