- 1:32Speaker 1: Southern Miss gets ready on the 6th of October to
- 1:35Speaker 1: take on Troy. Heath, welcome in, brother. How are you doing?
- 1:39Speaker 2: I'm good, Jake. I'm a little better now that Atlanta
- 1:41Speaker 2: Braves pulled it out, but I'm doing well. How about yourself?
- 1:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I was seeing that come across the wire there,
- 1:47Speaker 1: and I know a lot of people are excited about that.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Championship baseball is here. All right, so let's recap. A
- 1:53Speaker 1: month into this thing, got a win over Alcorn State,
- 1:57Speaker 1: a close loss at Tulane, 24-21. Just kind of your
- 2:00Speaker 1: assessment of this Southern Miss football team a month into
- 2:02Speaker 1: the season.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I think you saw in the last game a team
- 2:06Speaker 2: that's starting to come together, a team that should have
- 2:09Speaker 2: beat Tulane, to be honest with you. And I think,
- 2:11Speaker 2: of course, Blake Anderson's already said it, but two Miss
- 2:16Speaker 2: field goals cost the game, let's be honest. They played
- 2:20Speaker 2: extremely well, I think. As far as defense, you've got
- 2:24Speaker 2: to work on some tackling offensively by the best game
- 2:27Speaker 2: of the year. I thought Landry Liddy was incredible. Uh,
- 2:31Speaker 2: 18 to 29, two 43, three touchdowns, uh, completion percentage, 62%.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I mean, the rating of one 66.6, not too bad
- 2:41Speaker 2: for the first start of the year, especially down there
- 2:43Speaker 2: in new Orleans against the lane. So I think you
- 2:46Speaker 2: saw some growth. I think you saw some good things. And, uh,
- 2:49Speaker 2: They get a few extra days this week to prepare
- 2:52Speaker 2: for Troy on Tuesday next week. Really, I thought they
- 2:55Speaker 2: played a great game, just didn't get the win, but
- 2:58Speaker 2: you can see a team of 75 newcomers finally starting
- 3:01Speaker 2: together in jail.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Visiting with Heath Hinton, talking Southern Miss football. Eagles on
- 3:06Speaker 1: the bye week. They'll get an opportunity next week at
- 3:08Speaker 1: Troy before two home games on the 17th and 24
- 3:11Speaker 1: against Arkansas State and Louisiana, formerly Lafayette. Tuesday edition of
- 3:15Speaker 1: the program. Heath, you had sent me something. I had
- 3:17Speaker 1: not seen it. Talk a little bit about what you
- 3:18Speaker 1: had sent me that Blake Anderson said. It's kind of
- 3:20Speaker 1: ruffling a little feathers, no pun intended, but I do
- 3:23Speaker 1: want to discuss that.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's just sometimes things get taken out
- 3:27Speaker 2: of context. Somebody asked him, how do you keep from
- 3:29Speaker 2: play start? And he said, well, you stop scheduling teams like,
- 3:33Speaker 2: you know, Auburn, UConn, Tulane. And what he was meaning,
- 3:38Speaker 2: he didn't mean not to schedule them. He was talking
- 3:41Speaker 2: about when you play teams like that and they're bigger
- 3:44Speaker 2: and more physical than you up front, What you've got
- 3:46Speaker 2: to do is you've got to wear them down. You've
- 3:47Speaker 2: got to hope that later on that your stamina and
- 3:51Speaker 2: that your ability to be in shape is better than
- 3:53Speaker 2: theirs are, and you wear them down towards the end,
- 3:55Speaker 2: but you try to keep it close. And that's what
- 3:57Speaker 2: they did to Tulane. It actually worked. In the game,
- 3:59Speaker 2: they were popping six, seven, eight, nine yards a carry
- 4:02Speaker 2: in the fourth quarter because Tulane was tired. And so
- 4:07Speaker 2: that's what he was talking about. I think maybe some
- 4:09Speaker 2: people took it the wrong way. He clarified today that
- 4:13Speaker 2: that is what he said, and I think everything's fine now. But,
- 4:17Speaker 2: you know, sometimes people get upset, especially when their team
- 4:19Speaker 2: loses against a rival. And I think everything will be
- 4:23Speaker 2: okay now. So I don't think it's going to be
- 4:25Speaker 2: much of a deal anymore. But, you know, people get
- 4:27Speaker 2: upset when you lose. And if you don't say things
- 4:30Speaker 2: the right way, and Blake, you admitted, I could have
- 4:33Speaker 2: said it better. You could have said it better. And
- 4:36Speaker 2: so I think it's all water under the bridge now.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Well, but I think there's a lot of truth in
- 4:42Speaker 1: what he said. I mean, when you look at this,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and for some reason, and you go to the college
- 4:47Speaker 1: football playoff committee and you go to a lot of
- 4:49Speaker 1: the talking heads in college football, you know, they're talking about, hey,
- 4:52Speaker 1: we need more expansion. We need a bigger playoff. That
- 4:55Speaker 1: whole deal's going on in Chicago this week. They'll have
- 4:57Speaker 1: meetings tomorrow with the playoff committee. And, you know, hey,
- 4:59Speaker 1: we want more opportunities for teams to get in the field.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But the field isn't even. And I think that's what,
- 5:05Speaker 1: and correct me if I'm wrong here, that's what Blake
- 5:07Speaker 1: Anderson's saying. I don't think it's an excuse. He's saying, hey, look,
- 5:10Speaker 1: We don't, and I don't want to speak directly for him,
- 5:12Speaker 1: and you've heard this from other group of six coaches,
- 5:16Speaker 1: we don't have the money that the schools, that Auburn's have.
- 5:19Speaker 1: We don't have the money that the Ole Miss and
- 5:20Speaker 1: Mississippi States have, and you can go around the corner
- 5:22Speaker 1: here to Alabama and other places. We know that we're
- 5:26Speaker 1: basically a feeding frenzy for these other universities. We can't
- 5:30Speaker 1: compete any longer with these schools. And to me, again,
- 5:34Speaker 1: it's a shame on you moment to the NCAA team
- 5:37Speaker 1: and to the college football playoff committee, that we continue
- 5:39Speaker 1: to pretend that we are all still equal when they're
- 5:44Speaker 1: actually not. And I think that's what, to me, that's
- 5:45Speaker 1: what I heard out of that.
- 5:47Speaker 2: That's exactly right. He's saying, look, they're being outspent. Southern
- 5:51Speaker 2: Miss doesn't have any of those resources. You play Auburn,
- 5:54Speaker 2: you're outspent 30-1. You play Tulane, you're outspent 5-1. You
- 5:57Speaker 2: play UConn, you're probably outspent 4-1. You're playing teams that
- 6:02Speaker 2: outspend you. And, you know, it is true, just like
- 6:05Speaker 2: in professional sports, Usually the teams that spend the most
- 6:09Speaker 2: money on their rosters are the teams that are going
- 6:10Speaker 2: to win. And in college football, that's true. You want
- 6:13Speaker 2: the best players, you've got to spend the most money.
- 6:16Speaker 2: And how do you combat that? Well, you try to
- 6:19Speaker 2: find some Juco guys. That's what Juco is for now.
- 6:23Speaker 2: And high school guys and bring them in and hope
- 6:25Speaker 2: they can compete young. And find some FCS guys that
- 6:28Speaker 2: you can bring up. And that's what Blake does. I
- 6:30Speaker 2: think they did a really good job of it, especially
- 6:31Speaker 2: when you only had to consider he had two, maybe
- 6:34Speaker 2: two and a half weeks to get a roster to get.
- 6:38Speaker 2: after the bowl game was when Huff left and took
- 6:40Speaker 2: all the players with him. So, yeah, it's not a
- 6:45Speaker 2: level playing field. It just isn't. And until they do
- 6:50Speaker 2: something to put a cap on him and stop all
- 6:53Speaker 2: the multiple transfers, all the leverage is with the players,
- 6:58Speaker 2: and none of it are with the schools, and it's
- 7:01Speaker 2: showing right now. It's the wild west.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Heath, talk a little bit about this defense. You've got
- 7:07Speaker 1: some guys that are playmakers on this defense. It's a
- 7:10Speaker 1: defense that's given up 29, almost 30 points per game,
- 7:12Speaker 1: but I would think those numbers would improve over the
- 7:15Speaker 1: next several weeks. Michael Robinson III, he's a junior defensive back.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Mathis Haygood, a junior linebacker. Those two guys kind of
- 7:22Speaker 1: lead the charge here in tackles right at 29 apiece.
- 7:25Speaker 1: And then you've got some other, I think, good pieces
- 7:27Speaker 1: on this defense to really build around.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the defense is coming together. One thing
- 7:32Speaker 2: they've got to work on is tackling. I think that
- 7:35Speaker 2: really got them in the two-lane game. Look, they had
- 7:36Speaker 2: those guys stop in the backfield, miss three or four tackles,
- 7:39Speaker 2: get through, and two-lane had some really good physical running back.
- 7:42Speaker 2: So you've got to give them credit, too. It's not
- 7:44Speaker 2: like they're tackling a dummy out there. But, yeah, I think,
- 7:48Speaker 2: you know, you look at Sylvie, DB, just he's turned
- 7:55Speaker 2: into a really, really, really good cornerback who makes it
- 7:59Speaker 2: play to the next level. You never know. You're right,
- 8:02Speaker 2: Michael Robinson, third, DB, he's really a missile in the
- 8:08Speaker 2: defensive backfield. So I do think you're seeing some growth there.
- 8:12Speaker 2: So you've got to work on the tackling, but I
- 8:14Speaker 2: also think it's going to be a different story once
- 8:16Speaker 2: you get into conference play. You know, Blake was true
- 8:18Speaker 2: about this. Play teams that are more like you, and
- 8:21Speaker 2: I think things are going to be a little more even,
- 8:23Speaker 2: and I think these big battles they've had are going
- 8:26Speaker 2: to make things easier for them when they get into conference.
- 8:28Speaker 2: A lot of people forget that– UConn team, that coach
- 8:32Speaker 2: came from Toledo, I believe, and two years ago that
- 8:35Speaker 2: Toledo team came into Mississippi State in, what, 41-17 or
- 8:39Speaker 2: something like that. So it's, that guy can coach and
- 8:43Speaker 2: he brought a lot of his players with him, too.
- 8:45Speaker 2: It's just a different day and age to live in
- 8:48Speaker 2: when you're trying to build it with an assistant coach
- 8:50Speaker 2: that's having a coach that's a head coach coming in.
- 8:54Speaker 2: It's different and you're seeing it and I think they're growing.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Just got to work on the tackling on the defensive side,
- 9:00Speaker 2: but A lot of football we played this year. They're
- 9:02Speaker 2: one in three conference plays coming up. Who knows what
- 9:04Speaker 2: will happen.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Make sure to get him on exit. BG and Heath Hinton,
- 9:09Speaker 1: of course, get him at Big Gold Nation. If you
