- 0:00Speaker 1: And it's a sponsored it's brought to you by croissants,
- 0:02Speaker 1: my croissants.
- 0:04Speaker 2: It's raining croissants, Croissants. It's ben Lee the doughnut Critic.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Although today I guess you used your quissant critic.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I hearde you guys speaking about croissants earlier and
- 0:17Speaker 3: it just you know, tingled my ear.
- 0:19Speaker 4: I follow the donut Critic on Instagram and I was
- 0:22Speaker 4: following your travels all over Europe.
- 0:26Speaker 5: Yeah, so we did four weeks, eight countries.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 0:29Speaker 5: And yeah, I'm fresh off the airplane right now.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Wow.
- 0:32Speaker 3: So I wanted to try some of the French pastries
- 0:35Speaker 3: here in Salt Lake City. I wanted to see fresh
- 0:38Speaker 3: off the plane. Yeah, if it matches.
- 0:40Speaker 5: Up with what I was experiencing over there.
- 0:42Speaker 2: So what have you got?
- 0:43Speaker 3: So I did bring in a French bakery, items from
- 0:47Speaker 3: a French bakery. It's called the Lease and it's on
- 0:50Speaker 3: twenty seven to forty seven South State Street, so really
- 0:53Speaker 3: close to downtown South Salt Lake.
- 0:56Speaker 5: And uh, I was impressed.
- 1:00Speaker 4: So other than croissants, what else do we have on
- 1:02Speaker 4: the plate?
- 1:03Speaker 3: So what you'll see this and this is gonna be
- 1:06Speaker 3: kind of interesting. So you have tarts you have like
- 1:09Speaker 3: the normal fruit tarts, And what I did is I
- 1:11Speaker 3: brought the raspberry pistachio tart. Yes, like I love the
- 1:16Speaker 3: big chunks of pistachio on the outside. It's a light
- 1:18Speaker 3: cream on the base. And uh yeah. The pastry bass
- 1:22Speaker 3: is really good as well.
- 1:23Speaker 1: That was the first thing I went to and just delicious.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and I also brought in the peach which is
- 1:29Speaker 3: like a yeast puff pastry and not puff pastry sorry,
- 1:33Speaker 3: it's a brio still and then it's filled with peach
- 1:37Speaker 3: and then it's got a syrupy peach nos to it.
- 1:40Speaker 1: So you can see the syrup on the on the outside.
- 1:42Speaker 3: So they actually place it in a little cup and
- 1:44Speaker 3: it kind of soaks up through the.
- 1:48Speaker 5: No, that's the cheese bread.
- 1:50Speaker 3: So they also have some savory items, which is a
- 1:54Speaker 3: cheese bread, so it's it's more or less just a
- 1:56Speaker 3: flattened bread with cheese baked on top.
- 1:59Speaker 5: We jumped over that peach too quickly.
- 2:01Speaker 6: Oh yeah, it's absolutely delicious, god is so is Yeah,
- 2:05Speaker 6: very good.
- 2:06Speaker 3: So if you've been to Gormandy's, you're kind of going
- 2:08Speaker 3: to recognize some of these, and that's one of the
- 2:10Speaker 3: reasons why I held off trying Delease for so long,
- 2:13Speaker 3: is you know, it just seemed like it could have
- 2:16Speaker 3: been just a stamp and repeat of what we had
- 2:18Speaker 3: been experiencing at Gormandy's, and for good reason. So Jean Jack,
- 2:23Speaker 3: he's the owner of Delease and he's been there. He
- 2:26Speaker 3: was at Gormandy's for about fifteen years. Oh yeah, as
- 2:29Speaker 3: the pastry manager, so he learned the trade. But he
- 2:32Speaker 3: also has those roots. So him and his father in
- 2:35Speaker 3: law started Normandy so he had a good food background.
- 2:38Speaker 3: They had a lot of French roots going on there
- 2:41Speaker 3: and decided to take that into Gormandy's.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Even before that, I met him at Brumby's. You remember
- 2:49Speaker 2: Brumbies he was doing, and that's right around the corner
- 2:52Speaker 2: from where I live, and my wife was pregnant, so
- 2:55Speaker 2: holds my son twenty six I think, so twenty six
- 2:59Speaker 2: years ago or twenty seven years ago. I would go
- 3:02Speaker 2: into Brumby's and she just craved their almond clissants and
- 3:06Speaker 2: I got her all in glissans on the weekend.
- 3:08Speaker 5: Yeah, So the history's there.
- 3:10Speaker 3: I mean, he's been here about fifty years, but he's
- 3:12Speaker 3: got those French roots, he's got those recipes and they've
- 3:16Speaker 3: been running Delease for about eight years, so it started
- 3:19Speaker 3: in twenty eighteen. But I still think it's relatively unknown.
- 3:23Speaker 3: I mean, I feel like I talked to people, and
- 3:26Speaker 3: you know, some people are now fail or heard about it,
- 3:29Speaker 3: but they haven't been in and they have a lot
- 3:30Speaker 3: of stuff in there.
- 3:32Speaker 6: My wife and I used to go to Garmandy's so
- 3:34Speaker 6: when we were dating because she worked today, T and T,
- 3:36Speaker 6: and it was.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Just yeah, but I'll be honest, my wife and I
- 3:40Speaker 3: have been there and to Gormandy's recently, and I wanted
- 3:44Speaker 3: to see how Delise carried on maybe the traditional because
- 3:47Speaker 3: there are some things that I think that they're kind
- 3:49Speaker 3: of driving in a certain direction. They're doing a lot
- 3:52Speaker 3: more like dinner meals and so they're they're.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Focusing for focus.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Yeah, but I feel like when I walked into Delise,
- 3:59Speaker 3: it was the Gormandy's that I experienced ten years ago.
- 4:02Speaker 6: Now, Susie says, she goes to the Lease for lunch. Yes,
- 4:06Speaker 6: do they do like what sand sandwiches?
- 4:08Speaker 5: Yeah, so they have breakfast all day.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Oh so you can get the panninies, the bagels, the toasts,
- 4:15Speaker 3: the French toasts all day and then they do have sandwiches.
- 4:18Speaker 5: They have hot and cold delly sandwiches as well.
- 4:21Speaker 1: See, now I gotta go down trail.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the thing is I'm going to go back
- 4:25Speaker 3: in just to see, especially with her baguettes and how
- 4:28Speaker 3: they do their meats and cheeses. I mean, that was
- 4:30Speaker 3: one of the things when I was over in Paris
- 4:32Speaker 3: and some of those other countries. They just do that
- 4:35Speaker 3: baguette and those meat and cheeses so well, and they
- 4:38Speaker 3: can do it so simple and it's delicious, and that's
- 4:40Speaker 3: why I'm going to go back.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I remember the the first time I had a sandwich
- 4:45Speaker 2: in France. It was on a train and they come
- 4:48Speaker 2: down with these little carts and it was a ham sandwich,
- 4:50Speaker 2: and I expect to go, you know, all kinds of stuff. No,
- 4:53Speaker 2: it was on a little baggette, little butter piece of ham,
- 4:57Speaker 2: and that's it.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's the perfect way.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It was delicious.
- 5:01Speaker 1: That's the thing.
- 5:02Speaker 6: You look at it and you think, oh, like a
- 5:04Speaker 6: gas station sandwich was terrific.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I didn't need anything else.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Oh yeah.
- 5:09Speaker 2: And my wife and I have been taking fresh radishes
- 5:12Speaker 2: from the garden, using good butter, like the Irish butter
- 5:16Speaker 2: on a bag at and then just putting ratish slices
- 5:18Speaker 2: and that's a little bit of salt.
- 5:20Speaker 5: Yeah, they've honestly perfected that.
- 5:23Speaker 3: And and so that's what I'm excited to go and
- 5:25Speaker 3: do is get some lunch down there.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Yes, how do you how do you spell the lease?
- 5:29Speaker 5: So delease is d E l I ce.
- 5:32Speaker 3: It's got great ratings and a lot of people rave
- 5:35Speaker 3: about it, but like I said, it's still relatively unknown overall.
- 5:39Speaker 5: I feel like it is.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I haven't heard no idea.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just like tucked in there. I mean you
- 5:44Speaker 3: know what, I think it's donut and delies there. So
- 5:46Speaker 3: they get to the donut shop and they don't go
- 5:48Speaker 3: that extra block to the to the further south, just
- 5:52Speaker 3: a little bit further south. It's about a half block first.
- 5:54Speaker 6: But we have so many great locally owned places like this.
- 5:58Speaker 6: Why are you going to chains? Where are you going
- 6:00Speaker 6: to national chains?
- 6:02Speaker 5: Truthful?
- 6:03Speaker 6: These these these places like this, you get a better
- 6:05Speaker 6: quality product, you're supporting a local business.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Yeah, and they're always amazing.
- 6:09Speaker 3: No, And that's honestly one of the things I love
- 6:12Speaker 3: about having discussions with you all is breaking that chain breaking,
- 6:16Speaker 3: breaking people out of just going to that same old
- 6:19Speaker 3: thing and it's yeah, it's something we.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Have habits like we y'all dorew and I like finding
- 6:25Speaker 4: these new new places.
- 6:27Speaker 3: So, speaking of chains, which are actually pretty funny in Europe,
- 6:30Speaker 3: one thing I learned is that KFC and Burger King
- 6:34Speaker 3: are not dead over there. I was so surprised to
- 6:39Speaker 3: see how many of those truck stops had those what
- 6:42Speaker 3: their menus looked like. They were very innovative and very
- 6:46Speaker 3: popular every time I saw it.
- 6:47Speaker 5: When you say innovative, how are they different from here?
- 6:50Speaker 3: So they had different menu items that fit more of
- 6:52Speaker 3: the local questions and roy out.
- 6:55Speaker 1: But they had that.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Yeah, they had like farmer burgers.
- 6:58Speaker 3: They had other things that were, you know, appealing to
- 7:01Speaker 3: that crowd over there. But it was so funny just
- 7:04Speaker 3: to see, Wow, no, like Burger King over here, phils dead.
- 7:07Speaker 2: And they have wine.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Wine at burger.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Yeah, let's see.
- 7:13Speaker 6: Sid says, try the palatine chocolate and crispy maybe hazel
- 7:17Speaker 6: nut layers. I also like their milliel.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Oh that's one of the most popular cakes. Yeh, Strawberry's
- 7:24Speaker 3: pastry cream puff pastry.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, that sounds great.
- 7:28Speaker 4: A couple of different people saying Delise is our favorite.
- 7:31Speaker 1: That's our go to spots. The secrets out now well.
- 7:34Speaker 2: But yeah, and and by the way, you listeners, thanks
- 7:36Speaker 2: for letting nuts know.
- 7:37Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly.
- 7:38Speaker 4: And you know, if you have a place that you
- 7:40Speaker 4: want Ben to check out, he's pretty good. But he's
- 7:43Speaker 4: a catch them all.
- 7:44Speaker 1: There might be some great la.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Honestly, there's some places I've held out on, like Delease
- 7:49Speaker 3: for the longest time. I was like, I've got it
- 7:51Speaker 3: taken care of. I already know what they serve there.
- 7:53Speaker 3: But going in today, I was like, oh man, I've
- 7:55Speaker 3: been missing out on this, Like this is high quality
- 7:57Speaker 3: and this is stuff I.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Want to If people want to let you know, give
- 8:01Speaker 4: you a heads up on a place that they think
- 8:02Speaker 4: you should check out.
- 8:03Speaker 1: How do they do that?
- 8:03Speaker 5: Yeah, go to Donut Critic on Instagram.
- 8:05Speaker 3: That's d O n U T C R I T
- 8:08Speaker 3: I C and you can just DM me and we'll
- 8:11Speaker 3: have a conversation.
- 8:12Speaker 2: And and I'm sure I bet he's listening right now.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Jean Jacques, it's nice to know you're still around. I
- 8:17Speaker 2: didn't realize you were still around.
- 8:19Speaker 5: It's nice to know that. Yeah, it was great to
- 8:21Speaker 5: meet him. I'll be in Thank you very much.
