- 0:02Speaker 1: From Darryl K.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Royal, Texas Memorial Stadium, Austin, it's the Texas Longhorns against
- 0:08Speaker 2: the Ole Miss Rebels. Near the right hash, out of
- 0:11Speaker 2: the hold of the punter, Max Chimeno, trade above is
- 0:13Speaker 2: the snap to give Texas the first points of the ballgame.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Good snap and hold, and the kick is up, and
- 0:19Speaker 1: the kick is good.
- 0:19Speaker 2: The Longhorns get a three and out on defense, and
- 0:21Speaker 2: then a field goal drive on offense, and they score first.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Chandler's with a snap, looks to throw, sends it over
- 0:25Speaker 1: the middle, that ball intercepted by Justin Pryor!
- 0:27Speaker 2: Pryor turns it outside to the 40, and Texas gets
- 0:29Speaker 2: the turnover right back! With a senior transfer, Justin Pryor
- 0:39Speaker 2: stepped in front of the pass, and the Longhorns get
- 0:42Speaker 2: a turnover right back with a 14-yard return. Ryan Wingo,
- 0:45Speaker 2: Lee Brown in it, running back in the pistol. Play action.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Manning being chased. Got rid of it. Ball caught.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Turn it up.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Fields Wingo to the 40.
- 0:53Speaker 5: 45.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Wingo up the sidelines. Big field to the 40. Cuts
- 0:57Speaker 2: inside to the 40. And a first down for Jackson.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Ryan Wingo, some nifty running after the catch before Antonio
- 1:03Speaker 1: Pike can run him down. But it's a first down
- 1:06Speaker 1: for the Longhorns. A 38-yard stride. Manning to take the snap.
- 1:10Speaker 1: A first to go. Arch Burns keeps it himself.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Manning cuts inside. Let it go wide.
- 1:17Speaker 6: Touchdown, Texas.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Arch Manning. And a nice cut inside once he saw
- 1:20Speaker 1: the block.
- 1:21Speaker 2: And the Longhorns.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Have their first touchdown.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Arch Manning has his first rushing touchdown of the season.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Chattel with shotgun.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Has to snap. Play action.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Arch looking to throw.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Steps up in the pocket.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Puts it up. Going deep.
- 1:32Speaker 7: Downfield for Waco.
- 1:33Speaker 8: He caught it.
- 1:36Speaker 9: Touchdown, Texas!
- 1:37Speaker 1: Ryan Wingo right over the shoulder.
- 1:39Speaker 4: A beautiful catch.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And the Loghorns have another score.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Manning will take the snap from under center.
- 1:44Speaker 2: First down and goal handoff.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Michael Terry blasts across for a touchdown.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Michael Terry's first touchdown. And they're all going to get
- 1:53Speaker 2: to the cross. And Texas is now up by three touchdowns.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Fourth down and goal of the Texas two-guy run. Chandler's
- 2:01Speaker 2: out of the shotgun, has the stamp.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Looks, pumps, over the middle, intercepted by Raheem Biles!
- 2:06Speaker 2: Biles stepped right in front of Alexander.
- 2:10Speaker 1: It's a pick, another turnover. Forced by Texas.
- 2:15Speaker 2: And the Longhorns hold with a minute 37 remaining in
- 2:18Speaker 2: the half.
- 2:20Speaker 3: March out of the pistol, has the snap, turns, hands
- 2:22Speaker 3: to the relief, around again, cuts up.
- 2:23Speaker 1: The middle, does a nice job, 25, 30, there.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Goes Brown, to the 40, relief, to midfield, to the
- 2:29Speaker 2: 40 and run down.
- 2:31Speaker 1: In Ole Miss territory.
- 2:33Speaker 2: He also thought he got face masked.
- 2:36Speaker 1: That wasn't called.
- 2:37Speaker 2: But a late grab with a huge run. Just when
- 2:40Speaker 2: the Longhorns really needed it. Into Ole Miss territory. With
- 2:44Speaker 2: Amari Winston.
- 2:45Speaker 1: As the fullback.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Under center.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Manning to take the snap.
- 2:48Speaker 2: On second and goal.
- 2:48Speaker 10: Inside.
- 2:49Speaker 1: The Ole Miss one.
- 2:49Speaker 11: Play action.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Rolling to the right side.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Arch Manning trots into the end zone.
- 2:57Speaker 4: On a bootleg.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And the Longhorns are back in front. A 58-yard field
- 3:01Speaker 1: goal drop. Trying to pull Ole Miss to the end four.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Good snap and.
- 3:09Speaker 5: Hold.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Kick on the way, and it's blocked. We got a
- 3:13Speaker 1: hand on it. Longhorn's got a hand on it. Now
- 3:15Speaker 1: it's January.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Who got it?
- 3:16Speaker 1: And it's no good. And Texas will take over.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Banning out of the shotgun of the turn. He'll hand
- 3:23Speaker 3: it to Brown.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Leak cuts it up.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Center on the field.
- 3:27Speaker 2: 40 breaks a tackle.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Outside to the 40.
- 3:31Speaker 11: Brown with a 20.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Well, Leak stays around.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Bouncing goes down at the 16-yard line. Parker would have
- 3:36Speaker 2: kept running anyway, but that's all right. He'll take that
- 3:39Speaker 2: down to the 16-yard line.
- 3:39Speaker 3: A gain of 28 yards.
- 3:40Speaker 2: How about this running game just coming to life here
- 3:43Speaker 2: in the fourth quarter? Now he's ready to try a
- 3:46Speaker 2: 33-yard field goal. Good snap and hold, the kick on
- 3:50Speaker 2: the way, and Gianni Spinnick's kick is good.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Spinnick knocks it through, and the Longhorns.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Have a 10-point lead with 2.25 remaining in the ballgame.
- 4:01Speaker 2: One second left for the Dan Chandler's from the shotgun.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Pass the staff. Chandler's rolling to the right, looking to
- 4:10Speaker 2: heave it for the end zone.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Throws it down there. Intercepted in the end zone. Jelani
- 4:17Speaker 1: McDonald picks it off, and the ball game is over.
- 4:20Speaker 2: The Longhorns bounce back with a huge win over the
- 4:25Speaker 2: seventh-ranked team in the country. Final score, the Texas Longhorns 34,
- 4:30Speaker 2: the Ole Miss Rebels 27. A win on Saturday night,
- 4:36Speaker 2: and then it's on to that other Mississippi school. Good afternoon, everybody.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300,
- 4:41Speaker 2: The Zone. and the iHeartRadio app. Glad to have you
- 4:46Speaker 2: with us. My name is Craig Wade. Thank you much
- 4:48Speaker 2: for joining us here on a Longhorns Monday, a recap
- 4:51Speaker 2: of the Texas game. And in looking forward, we'll hear
- 4:54Speaker 2: from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian. We'll also hear from
- 4:56Speaker 2: Arch Manning. Today we'll hear from Texas men's basketball coach
- 5:01Speaker 2: Sean Miller. And we'll look at the Texas women's game
- 5:06Speaker 2: as well, their exhibition win over UCLA. So we'll do
- 5:10Speaker 2: all that. Glad to have you with us. The producer
- 5:14Speaker 2: is Jake Herman, who put together that montage on all
- 5:17Speaker 2: of that. How'd you spend your Sunday yesterday?
- 5:20Speaker 6: Well, I came in here, got to produce and provide
- 5:23Speaker 6: some updates on the women's basketball action. Of course, part
- 5:26Speaker 6: of that job included keeping an eye on the NFL.
- 5:29Speaker 6: So I did continue my football watching afterwards. But other
- 5:33Speaker 6: than that, just a mellow Sunday night in. Cooked some
- 5:36Speaker 6: dinner at home, got some errands and grocery shopping done,
- 5:39Speaker 6: and got to.
- 5:41Speaker 12: Do a little clean out. Get ready for another big week.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Yeah. So what did you cook?
- 5:46Speaker 12: Last night? Well, this is an Allison creation.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Oh, yeah?
- 5:50Speaker 12: Curry beef noodles.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Okay. How did that come out?
- 5:53Speaker 12: A little spicy for me.
- 5:54Speaker 6: But, you know, I'm starting to– I'm trying to be
- 5:56Speaker 6: a little more adaptable to what she likes to eat.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I guess it just– and believe it or not, I'm
- 6:03Speaker 2: not that far from you in terms of, you know–
- 6:09Speaker 2: The spiciness, the level of the spicy sometimes. So I
- 6:13Speaker 2: get it. I understand that. As always, we appreciate having
- 6:20Speaker 2: your input on the program as well. You can text
- 6:24Speaker 2: the program. You text the word Texas followed by your
- 6:27Speaker 2: question or comment to 81530. And standard messaging and data
- 6:33Speaker 2: rates may apply. You can also reach us via the
- 6:36Speaker 2: talkback line. our TalkBack feature. And what you have to
- 6:43Speaker 2: have for that is the iHeartRadio app. Real easy, just
- 6:46Speaker 2: have that downloaded as well. And so do that. And
- 6:52Speaker 2: then once you download the iHeartRadio app, then you do
- 6:55Speaker 2: a search for AM13 under the zone. And after you
- 6:59Speaker 2: do the search for AM13 under the zone, it'll pop
- 7:01Speaker 2: straight up. And then you'll see the two buttons. One
- 7:04Speaker 2: is a white triangular button. One is a red button.
- 7:07Speaker 2: The little white microphone, you push that button, you can
- 7:09Speaker 2: leave us a voice message on the talkback. But like
- 7:11Speaker 2: I said, also, we welcome those of you who want
- 7:16Speaker 2: to join us on the text line. So feel free
- 7:20Speaker 2: to do that. Our friend who normally pounds on Texas
- 7:25Speaker 2: about offense wanted to go to the special teams part
- 7:29Speaker 2: of the day saying, Nick Saban, Kirby Smart. Ryan Day,
- 7:32Speaker 2: Kirk Cignetti, do not have special teams issues.
- 7:35Speaker 12: You sure about that?
- 7:36Speaker 2: You ever heard of the kick six, my friend? It
- 7:38Speaker 2: cost Nick Saban a game against Auburn.
- 7:41Speaker 6: Ryan Day hasn't been able to recruit a kicker. Ohio
- 7:44Speaker 6: State is a kicker away from having three or four
- 7:46Speaker 6: national championships under Ryan Day.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. That's true. But I get what you're saying.
- 7:52Speaker 2: We say attention to detail is what separates the great
- 7:54Speaker 2: coaches from all the others. No doubt. And they've got
- 7:57Speaker 2: to be better at that. And Sark does talk about that.
- 8:02Speaker 2: First of all, and the thing that turned out, it
- 8:07Speaker 2: really wasn't even a purposeful fake punt. But that was
- 8:11Speaker 2: a mistake in alignment. And you can't have mistakes like
- 8:14Speaker 2: that on special teams. And it opened up that whole
- 8:16Speaker 2: side of the field. Roger and I were joking during
- 8:18Speaker 2: the break. We said, you know, We could have run
- 8:20Speaker 2: from the booth, maybe had gone around there and picked
- 8:21Speaker 2: up the first time. So your point is made on that.
- 8:24Speaker 2: The onside kick is, and you'll hear Sark talk about this.
- 8:28Speaker 2: That's one of those deals. There's two sets of hands.
- 8:31Speaker 2: He probably doesn't have any less trust in, any more
- 8:35Speaker 2: trust in than those two guys. And somehow, physical mistake happens.
- 8:39Speaker 2: They don't come down with it. Emmett Mosley doesn't come
- 8:41Speaker 2: down with it. And it goes right through the arms
- 8:44Speaker 2: as well of Grayson Littleton. Now, they aligned properly for it.
- 8:49Speaker 2: but you still have to finish the play. So that's important. Absolutely. Now,
- 8:53Speaker 2: having said all that, you ask about special teams, they
- 8:57Speaker 2: get two field goals and they block a field goal.
- 8:59Speaker 2: So it works both ways. And then the other thing,
- 9:04Speaker 2: like I said, normally you're banging on us about them
- 9:06Speaker 2: not having a ground attack. Funny, didn't hear from you
- 9:09Speaker 2: about that since they ran for 207 yards in the game.
- 9:13Speaker 2: You didn't say anything about that, but that's okay. I
- 9:17Speaker 2: understand what Your direction is, is this going to be
- 9:20Speaker 2: on all of that? And that's okay. Like I said,
- 9:22Speaker 2: we read the text as well. So you're welcome to
- 9:24Speaker 2: text in the program anytime, everybody. I'm just saying it
- 9:28Speaker 2: does work both ways. And working both ways means they're
- 9:32Speaker 2: now five and two. If you want to list off things,
- 9:36Speaker 2: here's something you can list off. They have three wins
- 9:38Speaker 2: over teams ranked in the top 15. Nobody else has
- 9:42Speaker 2: that in the country. Do they have two losses to
- 9:46Speaker 2: unranked teams? Absolutely they do. Oklahoma and Florida. They have
- 9:50Speaker 2: two losses to unranked teams. You know who else is
- 9:53Speaker 2: ranked and has losses to unranked teams? Georgia. Iowa.
- 9:57Speaker 12: BYU.
- 10:00Speaker 2: As of this Saturday, USC, Tennessee.
- 10:04Speaker 12: They finally took Iowa and USC out of the rankings,
- 10:07Speaker 12: by the way.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Yeah. So that's five teams that had been ranked at
- 10:14Speaker 2: the time that they lost to unranked teams. So, and
- 10:17Speaker 2: I think this goes to the point, and it's not
- 10:19Speaker 2: just whatever defensive sarker of the program or whatever. I
- 10:23Speaker 2: think he made a good point about it, but I'm
- 10:24Speaker 2: hearing it all around college football. When folks say there's
- 10:28Speaker 2: a $ 50 million NIL payroll and all this kind of
- 10:31Speaker 2: stuff and other teams are spending 30 million, 35, there
- 10:33Speaker 2: should be no excuse for losing. No, what it's done
- 10:35Speaker 2: is it's brought the floor up for the teams that
- 10:39Speaker 2: are having to step in and it has affected the
- 10:44Speaker 2: depth of some of the higher echelon teams. That's what's
- 10:48Speaker 2: made for more parody this year in college football. That's
- 10:51Speaker 2: definitely what has made for more parody in the sec.
- 10:54Speaker 2: There's no question about that. And, and that's why you
- 10:57Speaker 2: see Auburn go to Athens and beat Georgia when they're
- 11:00Speaker 2: number one in the country. That's why you see South
- 11:03Speaker 2: Carolina beat Tennessee, Florida beat Texas, Texas. Oh, use a
- 11:07Speaker 2: little difference. It's a rivalry game, but, but still it's
- 11:10Speaker 2: an unranked team. Um, And Oklahoma's payroll, by the way,
- 11:14Speaker 2: is very similar to Texas anyway in terms of the
- 11:16Speaker 2: NIL commitment. So I think what it's done is it
- 11:20Speaker 2: has really upped the ante for the mid-level power four
- 11:27Speaker 2: teams to step up. That's how Minnesota beats Iowa, you know,
- 11:32Speaker 2: on that sort of thing. That's how a Purdue beats
- 11:36Speaker 2: Minnesota when Purdue was a bottom feeder as well. So
- 11:41Speaker 2: these kinds of things do happen, and they're happening with
- 11:44Speaker 2: more frequency now in this age of NIL.
- 11:48Speaker 6: Yeah, think about the team that's coming in here on Saturday,
- 11:50Speaker 6: Mississippi State. I mean, they've yo-yoed all season long. I
- 11:53Speaker 6: know Kamario Taylor's been in and out. They went up
- 11:56Speaker 6: to Minneapolis, and they beat Minnesota by 30.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:59Speaker 12: That's how tough the SEC is.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly. So anyway, the point about the special teams,
- 12:06Speaker 2: absolutely agree with it. It makes a good point. But
- 12:10Speaker 2: they've got to, you know, it's like address certain areas.
- 12:16Speaker 2: And then obviously giving up the strip sack fumble after,
- 12:19Speaker 2: you know, after Trevor Goosby went out with what appears
- 12:23Speaker 2: to be a season injury. There was no official word
- 12:26Speaker 2: on that yet. I think we'll find that out as
- 12:29Speaker 2: the week goes forward. But those were reports that came down. And,
- 12:34Speaker 2: you know, there were some breakdowns in the protections on
- 12:38Speaker 2: those things as well. The defense also made some really
- 12:41Speaker 2: good plays as well, and they forced Trinidad Chambliss into
- 12:43Speaker 2: three interceptions, and they forced him into 40 percentile completion rate,
- 12:47Speaker 2: one of the hottest quarterbacks in the country, coming into
- 12:49Speaker 2: the ballgame. Like I say, it works both ways on
- 12:54Speaker 2: both the offensive and the defensive side, and you just
- 12:56Speaker 2: hope you're standing on the plus side at the end
- 12:58Speaker 2: of the day. So, all right. Coming up, we're going
- 13:02Speaker 2: to hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian. Also... felt
- 13:09Speaker 2: for the Houston Texans when it looked like they might
- 13:13Speaker 2: be able to pull things off and get the win
- 13:16Speaker 2: and get the three and four didn't happen. And so
- 13:20Speaker 2: the Texans fall to the Giants and overnight here, the
- 13:23Speaker 2: Giants four, two, and one, and they're starting to distance
- 13:27Speaker 2: themselves in the NFC East. The Giants, hey, John Harbaugh,
- 13:32Speaker 2: Making a difference there on that.
- 13:34Speaker 6: Did not see that coming. But he's making all the
- 13:36Speaker 6: right moves. I mean, they clearly respond to J.J.
- 13:39Speaker 4: McCarthy.
- 13:39Speaker 6: And Cam Scadaboo clearly responded to his kind of benching
- 13:42Speaker 6: last week.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Yep, yep. No doubt about it.
- 13:45Speaker 10: All right.
- 13:45Speaker 2: We're going to get to all that. We'll get to
- 13:46Speaker 2: more of your questions. It is a Loghorns Monday. Glad
- 13:49Speaker 2: to have you with us here on Sports Radio AM
- 13:51Speaker 2: 13 Under the Zone on the iHeartRadio app. Here on
- 13:59Speaker 2: a Monday, a Longhorns Monday on Sports Radio AM 13
- 14:02Speaker 2: Under the Zone. Longhorns Monday is when we bring you
- 14:06Speaker 2: the weekly press conference with Steve Sarkeesian live at 1130
- 14:11Speaker 2: from the 40 Acres and the recap of it here
- 14:13Speaker 2: on this program starting off with his opening statement today.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Yes, looking back at the ball game, I think first
- 14:19Speaker 4: of all, a shout out to our crowd.
- 14:21Speaker 2: 104,306 Saturdays.
- 14:25Speaker 4: Fourth largest crowd in DKR history. So I think speaks
- 14:28Speaker 4: to volumes of just the support of our fans, what
- 14:31Speaker 4: they've done. I think we've had four of the top
- 14:34Speaker 4: seven crowds all time at DKR this season alone. So
- 14:39Speaker 4: love the support, love Longhorn Nation, all that they're doing
- 14:41Speaker 4: for us. I think a couple of notes that sometimes
- 14:44Speaker 4: I don't even know of, and John does a great
- 14:46Speaker 4: job of bringing to my attention. that's four straight top
- 14:50Speaker 4: 10 teams we've beaten at DKR now over the last
- 14:52Speaker 4: two seasons. So I think our guys' ability to show
- 14:56Speaker 4: up against those really good teams that come in here,
- 14:59Speaker 4: obviously 24-2 in our last 26 at home, But a
- 15:02Speaker 4: couple other things I think of note, I said this
- 15:04Speaker 4: after the game, that's 17 top 25 wins since 2023,
- 15:08Speaker 4: which is more than any other school in the country.
- 15:11Speaker 4: And that's seven top 10 wins since 2024, which is
- 15:15Speaker 4: more than any other team in the country. And that's
- 15:17Speaker 4: our third top 15 win this season, which is more
- 15:20Speaker 4: than any other school in the country. Only team to
- 15:22Speaker 4: win three, beat three top 15 ranked teams so far
- 15:26Speaker 4: this year. And I think for Arch, which is pretty cool,
- 15:29Speaker 4: that was his fifth top 10 ranked team win that
- 15:32Speaker 4: he's had in his career. So some pretty cool stuff
- 15:35Speaker 4: that's happening. Proud of our guys, proud of the organization,
- 15:38Speaker 4: everybody involved to get that done. I think as far
- 15:42Speaker 4: as the other night goes, I love the way obviously
- 15:44Speaker 4: we started and played the first half of the game.
- 15:46Speaker 4: I think we scored on four of our first six
- 15:48Speaker 4: possessions in the ball game. And then ultimately wrapping it
- 15:52Speaker 4: up at the end of the, at the end of
- 15:53Speaker 4: the game with the, with the 80 yard six play drive,
- 15:58Speaker 4: that was all runs. And then obviously then the next
- 16:00Speaker 4: drive to get the field goals with Relique, I thought
- 16:03Speaker 4: playing really good situational football, staying in bounds on the
- 16:05Speaker 4: one run that he popped out of there defensively. Three turnovers,
- 16:10Speaker 4: which we know, you know, I've been harping on this
- 16:12Speaker 4: for a couple weeks now, our ability to create turnovers.
- 16:16Speaker 4: I thought that showed up. I thought two of them
- 16:19Speaker 4: were really critical. Obviously, all three were, but they came
- 16:22Speaker 4: at when we were faced with adversity. And I thought
- 16:25Speaker 4: I spoke to the team about this this morning. I
- 16:27Speaker 4: loved the positivity and the energy when we were faced
- 16:32Speaker 4: with adversity Saturday night. We throw the pick in the
- 16:35Speaker 4: first quarter. We come right back the very next play,
- 16:38Speaker 4: Cryer gets the interception. They fake the punt. That drive
- 16:42Speaker 4: ends with Raheem Biles getting the interception. They get the
- 16:45Speaker 4: onside kick. The game ends with Jelani McDonald getting an interception.
- 16:48Speaker 4: So it's the response to the adversity that I was
- 16:51Speaker 4: really proud of the guys doing in the ballgame. And
- 16:54Speaker 4: I know I touched on last week on this. How
- 16:58Speaker 4: can you tell... your team is working in a way,
- 17:02Speaker 4: like what's something tangible to hold on to? And I
- 17:06Speaker 4: touched on Tuesday and Wednesday's practices. I didn't have the
- 17:09Speaker 4: numbers from Thursday's practice yet from an analytical standpoint. But
- 17:13Speaker 4: all week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday practices, we were at 120%
- 17:17Speaker 4: effort comparatively to our normal practices on Tuesday, Wednesday, and
- 17:23Speaker 4: Thursday in practice. Well, the byproduct of that was we
- 17:26Speaker 4: were 125% in game So you think about what our
- 17:31Speaker 4: guys exuded all week long and then what they exuded
- 17:34Speaker 4: in that ball game. I'm really proud of them and
- 17:37Speaker 4: proud of the energy, the effort, the physicality in which
- 17:40Speaker 4: they played with. Proud of the edge that they played
- 17:43Speaker 4: the game with. you know, obviously we need to stay hungry.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Now is not the time for relief syndrome. Now is
- 17:49Speaker 4: the time for a mama mentality. Like we got to
- 17:52Speaker 4: stay hungry and nobody did it better than Kobe. So
- 17:54Speaker 4: that'll be the mentality going into this thing. Obviously we
- 17:57Speaker 4: were not perfect the other night. I recognize that. There's
- 18:01Speaker 4: always areas for improvement and things to look for. The
- 18:04Speaker 4: penalties were the first thing that stood out when you
- 18:07Speaker 4: go back and look at the tape. There were some
- 18:09Speaker 4: that were worthy, no question of calls that we need
- 18:11Speaker 4: to get rectified. Most notably, we had a couple plays
- 18:15Speaker 4: that got to the perimeter where we grabbed. Part of
- 18:19Speaker 4: that is on the blocker. Part of that is on
- 18:21Speaker 4: the runner to set those blocks. You know, when a
- 18:23Speaker 4: defender has leverage, we have to put our foot in
- 18:25Speaker 4: the ground and cut up inside of that. So we'll
- 18:27Speaker 4: work on that and get that fixed. Obviously, there were
- 18:30Speaker 4: some false start things there that our guys were, you know,
- 18:33Speaker 4: they felt like the defense jumped. We then jumped. We
- 18:36Speaker 4: didn't get those calls. We haven't gotten an interpretation on
- 18:39Speaker 4: that yet from the league, which we will. I'll have
- 18:41Speaker 4: an answer for you guys on that on Thursday. But
- 18:45Speaker 4: I think what's important for us defensively is understanding how
- 18:49Speaker 4: to play with an edge, how to play with emotion,
- 18:52Speaker 4: not get emotional. And I felt like that came up
- 18:55Speaker 4: a couple times on defense and on special teams, so
- 18:58Speaker 4: we got to get that cleaned up as well. So
- 19:00Speaker 4: all in all, it was a great win against a
- 19:02Speaker 4: very good football team. New challenge this week. We've put
- 19:06Speaker 4: ourselves in the position that we're in. We got to
- 19:08Speaker 4: go right back to work with the same mentality. Mississippi State,
- 19:12Speaker 4: obviously a very dangerous football team. Kamario Taylor is a
- 19:16Speaker 4: fantastic quarterback. Understandably, he's going through some stuff from an
- 19:20Speaker 4: injury standpoint, but we have to prepare as if he's
- 19:23Speaker 4: going to play because this guy is a very dangerous player.
- 19:26Speaker 4: They have elite speed at wide receiver. Obviously, Evans is
- 19:30Speaker 4: a fantastic player. but he's not the only guy that
- 19:33Speaker 4: runs sub-10, 200 meters. For those guys, they can really roll,
- 19:36Speaker 4: and Bothwell is a physical.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Okay, so there is from Sark's press conference, that was
- 19:43Speaker 2: the opening statement. Then to the comments that started off,
- 19:46Speaker 2: Ask him about the running back situation because remember, Hollywood
- 19:50Speaker 2: Smothers was out. Derek Cooper was ill pretty much all
- 19:54Speaker 2: of last week and has also had a little bit
- 19:56Speaker 2: of a nagging knee problem. so a lot of it
- 20:00Speaker 2: was falling on Relique Brown. But then Michael Terry, 41
- 20:04Speaker 2: tough rushing yards, scored his first touchdowns, long one, took
- 20:06Speaker 2: another big carry down to the one-yard line. All of
- 20:09Speaker 2: that set up the Arch Manning bootleg touchdown run. All
- 20:12Speaker 2: of that stuff, really, really important. The nuances of the
- 20:16Speaker 2: in-and-out use of running backs.
- 20:18Speaker 4: It's been an interesting year, which is part of the
- 20:21Speaker 4: reason why we kind of went out and got both
- 20:23Speaker 4: of them, because... Of the grind of the season and
- 20:27Speaker 4: learning our time in the SEC and the physicality and
- 20:30Speaker 4: the toll that it takes on the runners in our league.
- 20:34Speaker 4: With the expectation, I didn't know if we would have
- 20:37Speaker 4: both of them every week. And clearly it's been two
- 20:40Speaker 4: different games now, Tennessee and Ole Miss, where we didn't
- 20:43Speaker 4: have Hollywood. And we really didn't have a healthy team.
- 20:47Speaker 4: Derek Cooper where Raleigh really had to shoulder the load
- 20:52Speaker 4: and so it'd be nice to have them all and
- 20:54Speaker 4: to balance it out but we're always trying to prepare
- 20:57Speaker 4: for if we don't have one or the other or
- 20:59Speaker 4: two the caveat to this was what what a what
- 21:02Speaker 4: a debut for Michael Terry to really play significant snap
- 21:05Speaker 4: snaps at running back I thought he played a heck
- 21:08Speaker 4: of a game was impactful in the game not only
- 21:10Speaker 4: in short yardage and third down situations but but obviously
- 21:13Speaker 4: when he had some opportunities to carry the ball on
- 21:15Speaker 4: first second down so I Every week is a little
- 21:18Speaker 4: bit different for us. I wish they were all healthy
- 21:22Speaker 4: and perfect and we could balance this thing out all
- 21:24Speaker 4: the way through. You just play the hand you're dealt
- 21:27Speaker 4: each week, if that makes sense. And then, okay, here's
- 21:30Speaker 4: the plan. And we get together as a staff kind
- 21:32Speaker 4: of Thursday, Friday, and then ultimately Saturday morning of how
- 21:35Speaker 4: we think we can play these guys moving forward. And
- 21:39Speaker 4: then what are the contingency plans if one of those
- 21:41Speaker 4: guys gets nicked up in-game? What are we going to
- 21:43Speaker 4: go to next? And so, like I said, I hope
- 21:47Speaker 4: they're all healthy this week for us because we need them.
- 21:49Speaker 4: We're going to need these guys. But if not, I
- 21:51Speaker 4: think we have enough depth at the position where a
- 21:54Speaker 4: guy can be a bell cow for a week or
- 21:56Speaker 4: two to get us through.
- 21:57Speaker 2: And that includes the use of the aforementioned Michael Terry.
- 22:01Speaker 2: And if you saw Michael Terry play in high school,
- 22:03Speaker 2: and I did, he called a playoff game when he
- 22:06Speaker 2: was playing at Alamo Heights. He got used all over
- 22:09Speaker 2: the field. He played quarterback. He played receiver. He played
- 22:12Speaker 2: running back. He played DB. He was a kick returner.
- 22:15Speaker 2: He did a little bit of everything. And so Sark
- 22:18Speaker 2: was asked about the transformation of Terry into a pure
- 22:22Speaker 2: running back.
- 22:23Speaker 4: You know, I think that Michael was a fantastic athlete,
- 22:27Speaker 4: you know, from Alamo Heights. And what a versatile player
- 22:30Speaker 4: he was, you know, from wildcat quarterback to wide receiver
- 22:33Speaker 4: to running back. even at times playing on the defensive
- 22:36Speaker 4: side of the ball. Um, but he was an athlete
- 22:39Speaker 4: by label, right? And, and so you, you try to
- 22:42Speaker 4: figure out, okay, where's the best way for this guy
- 22:45Speaker 4: to have success and looking at his body and his
- 22:48Speaker 4: structure and his skillset, we initially thought wide receiver, maybe
- 22:52Speaker 4: even an H back might be the best place for
- 22:54Speaker 4: him to go. Um, And then it was about halfway
- 22:58Speaker 4: through the season last year, maybe even almost two-thirds of
- 23:01Speaker 4: the way through the season, where we needed him to
- 23:04Speaker 4: play scout team running back. I can't remember who we
- 23:07Speaker 4: were playing. It might have been Georgia or somebody. And
- 23:11Speaker 4: the defensive coaches came to me, I think, about maybe
- 23:14Speaker 4: after Tuesday or Wednesday's practice, like, hey, this guy's a problem.
- 23:18Speaker 4: He's a problem at running back, and you might want
- 23:21Speaker 4: to take a look at him. So I'm watching the tape.
- 23:24Speaker 4: I said, shoot, they're right. So let's make the switch. Well,
- 23:28Speaker 4: making a switch in week seven or eight or whatever
- 23:30Speaker 4: it is of the season is really challenging, not so
- 23:33Speaker 4: much physically, but mentally. You're learning the offense as a receiver.
- 23:37Speaker 4: And now all of a sudden you're going back to
- 23:39Speaker 4: running back and you're trying to learn protections. You're trying
- 23:41Speaker 4: to learn run blocking schemes. You're trying to learn the
- 23:43Speaker 4: nuances of the fundamentals, the techniques at the position, um,
- 23:48Speaker 4: To Michael's credit, he worked at it, you know, and
- 23:50Speaker 4: he just kept kind of working at it. And he
- 23:52Speaker 4: had never really been a full-time running back. So there's
- 23:55Speaker 4: a lot of things at that position that you have
- 23:57Speaker 4: to learn through and grow through and the growing pains.
- 24:00Speaker 4: And he's worked really hard. I credit Coach Jalouk. for
- 24:04Speaker 4: his dedication to working with Michael. And I think we're
- 24:07Speaker 4: all seeing the benefits of the hard work that everybody's
- 24:10Speaker 4: put into this thing. And I'm really proud of Michael
- 24:13Speaker 4: because it could have been easy at the end of
- 24:14Speaker 4: the year to jump in the portal like a lot
- 24:16Speaker 4: of other guys do. And hey, I want to go
- 24:19Speaker 4: be this or be that or go somewhere and This
- 24:21Speaker 4: guy just stayed to the grind and stayed working, and
- 24:24Speaker 4: he's a really effective player for us on special teams
- 24:28Speaker 4: and is now finding a role and is carving out
- 24:30Speaker 4: a role for himself on offense, too.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Speaking of the portal, as Sark just referred to it,
- 24:36Speaker 2: and as we were talking about, this is the thing
- 24:38Speaker 2: we were talking about in the first segment. The portal
- 24:41Speaker 2: and NIL raising the floor for say the mid-level power
- 24:49Speaker 2: four conference teams and even the g6 schools as well
- 24:53Speaker 2: how much of an impact does it make and has
- 24:56Speaker 2: it indeed created more parity in the sec.
- 24:59Speaker 4: The transfer portal does two things right um one there's
- 25:05Speaker 4: a lot of really good players spread out on a
- 25:07Speaker 4: lot of rosters you know um it doesn't really matter
- 25:12Speaker 4: who you play in our league there's always been good
- 25:14Speaker 4: players in our conference but I think now more than ever,
- 25:17Speaker 4: people have depth and people are versatile. They're not just
- 25:21Speaker 4: good on one side of the ball. The other, they've
- 25:22Speaker 4: got really good depth on their team and they're, and they're,
- 25:25Speaker 4: and they're, they're more than equipped to, to go beat
- 25:28Speaker 4: anybody on the flip side for us. We've got new
- 25:33Speaker 4: players too, and we might not have the same depth
- 25:36Speaker 4: that maybe the sec, you know, top tier teams had
- 25:39Speaker 4: in the past. And so the combination of those two things, um,
- 25:44Speaker 4: I think, add up to, it creates more opportunities for
- 25:48Speaker 4: teams to knock teams off. If you're not playing your
- 25:50Speaker 4: best football that day, just about everybody's good enough to
- 25:54Speaker 4: beat anybody in our league. And I think that, you know,
- 25:56Speaker 4: I don't, I don't pretend to foresee the future, but
- 26:00Speaker 4: I've been kind of saying this and it's, it's now
- 26:03Speaker 4: starting to show itself more and more and more often.
- 26:06Speaker 4: And I, I have a ton of respect for Georgia, obviously,
- 26:11Speaker 4: and for the job that they've done, but There's no
- 26:14Speaker 4: game more indicative than that game at home when they
- 26:17Speaker 4: played Auburn at home. And how do you lose those games?
- 26:20Speaker 4: Three turnovers. We talk about turnovers all the time. And
- 26:23Speaker 4: then Auburn being equipped enough, if there's a crack in
- 26:26Speaker 4: the door, that Auburn can beat a Georgia on the
- 26:28Speaker 4: road at a place where most people don't go and win.
- 26:31Speaker 4: And so I think that's the best living example of
- 26:33Speaker 4: what that is. Now, there's rivalry games and all these
- 26:36Speaker 4: other things that can play into that. But I do
- 26:39Speaker 4: think it's the quality of teams in our league. It's
- 26:42Speaker 4: also the lack of depth that maybe some other teams
- 26:45Speaker 4: are used to having. um and there's just more parity
- 26:48Speaker 4: you know it just is what it is and again
- 26:50Speaker 4: i go back to i think that is a direct
- 26:52Speaker 4: result of the transfer portal and what that looks like
- 26:55Speaker 4: and and really good players have an opportunity to go
- 26:58Speaker 4: to other.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Schools okay all right we'll hear more from sark throughout
- 27:01Speaker 2: the course of the day up next inconceivable on a
- 27:04Speaker 2: monday here on sports radio am 13 under the zone
- 27:06Speaker 2: in the iheart radio app.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Second hour of.
- 27:10Speaker 2: The program here on sports radio am 1300 the zone
- 27:13Speaker 2: on a longhorns monday glad to have you with us
- 27:16Speaker 2: Craig Wayne, alongside producer Jay Kerman. Somebody said on the
- 27:24Speaker 2: text line, one word, Harbaugh. I would say two words,
- 27:29Speaker 2: John Harbaugh.
- 27:31Speaker 6: Well, that's an important distinction.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Not going well for Jim. Jim does have a college
- 27:36Speaker 2: football national championship. John Harbaugh has a Super Bowl championship. So, yeah, Harbaugh. Yeah,
- 27:45Speaker 2: he's turned it around with the Giants. Points to our
- 27:52Speaker 2: man C.
- 27:52Speaker 3: Powell.
- 27:53Speaker 2: He's the one who put the hardball. Also said Texans
- 27:55Speaker 2: not too good. Didn't help Dallas. Dallas should have waited
- 27:59Speaker 2: and hired. And then he mentioned about the Longhorn Divas retirement.
- 28:06Speaker 2: It's a very physical Saturday night. Knocked Keewon Lacey out
- 28:09Speaker 2: of the ballgame. Who knows, maybe for the year. We'll see.
- 28:11Speaker 2: He's been banged up. We also don't yet know about
- 28:14Speaker 2: Kamario Taylor. Mississippi State quarterback's been dealing with that turf-toe thing.
- 28:18Speaker 2: He did come back and he did play in the game,
- 28:20Speaker 2: but he was in and out of the ballgame against Oklahoma.
- 28:23Speaker 2: We'll get back to hearing more from Longhorns coach Steve
- 28:28Speaker 2: Sarkeesian here in a few minutes from the Monday news conference.
- 28:31Speaker 2: When it jumped to basketball and the Longhorns lost their
- 28:38Speaker 2: exhibition game at Madison Square Garden in New York yesterday,
- 28:42Speaker 2: To St. John's, 87-74. Texas was down, I think, by
- 28:45Speaker 2: 21 and cut it down to 10 and wound up
- 28:47Speaker 2: losing by 13. Let's hear from Sean Miller, his thoughts
- 28:51Speaker 2: on this matchup.
- 28:52Speaker 4: Well, I think the first thing for us here at
- 28:56Speaker 4: Texas is this is a great experience for our guys.
- 28:59Speaker 4: If you look at our makeup of our roster, we
- 29:04Speaker 4: have 11 new players. The one player you'll recognize is Modest.
- 29:08Speaker 4: who played on our team from start to finish a
- 29:10Speaker 4: year ago. So other than Modest, who played in the
- 29:13Speaker 4: Sweet 16 game for us, everybody else, this is our
- 29:17Speaker 4: first time in front of a crowd, first time really
- 29:21Speaker 4: that we've gotten on an airplane together and played a game,
- 29:24Speaker 4: a lot of firsts. And we wanted to do this
- 29:27Speaker 4: because we knew this would be a difficult challenge for us,
- 29:30Speaker 4: and it was. I think we've learned more about our team,
- 29:34Speaker 4: number one, Number two, we'll be better because we've played
- 29:37Speaker 4: this experience, you know, practicing, staying local, just doing the
- 29:42Speaker 4: things we've already done. That only gets you so far.
- 29:45Speaker 4: We needed to be able to come up here and
- 29:46Speaker 4: play against a big-time opponent in a way-cored atmosphere here
- 29:52Speaker 4: in New York City. So I'm very grateful for the
- 29:55Speaker 4: opportunity to be able to be here. I wish we
- 29:56Speaker 4: would have played better. I wish it would have been
- 29:58Speaker 4: a better game. for everybody, namely us. But it's what
- 30:02Speaker 4: it is, and we move on. In my mind, we're
- 30:06Speaker 4: a week out from our season opener, and now we
- 30:10Speaker 4: have to really drill down and get better at some
- 30:13Speaker 4: things that I thought we were exposed on here today.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and a good team like St. John's will do
- 30:19Speaker 2: that to you. What about the St. John's team?
- 30:21Speaker 4: Different faces, but it's the same. You know, when you
- 30:23Speaker 4: play St. John's, number one, you're going to deal with
- 30:27Speaker 4: supreme effort. And you really feel that effort with their
- 30:30Speaker 4: full court pressure, half court pressure and rebounding. And, you know,
- 30:35Speaker 4: at halftime, we had 10 turnovers. We had that deer
- 30:37Speaker 4: in the headlights look. I did think we were overall
- 30:40Speaker 4: a little bit better in the second half. And then
- 30:44Speaker 4: their second shots, you know, they get them with great effort.
- 30:47Speaker 4: It's not just their front court players, it's their wings
- 30:50Speaker 4: and guards. And so I think you have to be
- 30:53Speaker 4: able to answer the ball, answer the bell in the
- 30:55Speaker 4: rebounding area. And just dealing with their pressure. You know,
- 30:59Speaker 4: on our end, if you have 16 turnovers and you
- 31:02Speaker 4: give them 13 second shots, those are the two extra
- 31:05Speaker 4: possession games, things that they thrive on. And I thought
- 31:10Speaker 4: they really exposed us.
- 31:11Speaker 2: In that way.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Keyshawn Hall we're very familiar with to the point where
- 31:14Speaker 4: he had 31 against us in the second half last
- 31:17Speaker 4: year when he played Auburn. So he's an elite scorer.
- 31:20Speaker 4: He'll only get better. And I would say you're looking
- 31:23Speaker 4: at one of the Big East's overall best players there.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Yeah, he is, and he was really good against Texas
- 31:29Speaker 2: last year in that game down at Auburn. One thing
- 31:33Speaker 2: that Miller was pleased about was the second half improvement,
- 31:37Speaker 2: both in his team's rebounding and in their defense.
- 31:39Speaker 4: We were better in the second half, and I think
- 31:41Speaker 4: that's a good sign for us. We talked a little
- 31:43Speaker 4: bit about that after the game, but it was a
- 31:46Speaker 4: low bar in the first half. I just thought they
- 31:48Speaker 4: were just really in control. I mean, they had 49
- 31:51Speaker 4: points on us in the first half. I think From two,
- 31:54Speaker 4: they were 15 of 19 from the floor from two.
- 31:58Speaker 4: And it wasn't low post scores. It was a lot
- 32:00Speaker 4: of drives. It was transition. They were the faster, harder playing,
- 32:04Speaker 4: more confident team in the first half. We were better
- 32:08Speaker 4: in the second half, but we weren't able to be
- 32:10Speaker 4: good enough at either end. to really cut it and
- 32:12Speaker 4: put real pressure where everybody in the arena is like, man,
- 32:15Speaker 4: we got a game. We entered that space a couple times,
- 32:19Speaker 4: but we were never really ever able to really put
- 32:21Speaker 4: that game pressure on St.
- 32:23Speaker 10: John's.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Okay. It's weird. It's kind of a tale of a
- 32:27Speaker 2: couple of ball games and a tale of two halves.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Not only were Texas playing better in the second half
- 32:32Speaker 2: after not playing well in the first, that was their
- 32:35Speaker 2: first game out in Exhibition. The Texas women had their
- 32:38Speaker 2: second game out in Exhibition, Remember last Monday, they lost
- 32:42Speaker 2: to UConn when they played well in the first half,
- 32:45Speaker 2: but not in the second half. Against UCLA yesterday, up
- 32:49Speaker 2: at the HEB Center at Cedar Park, they played pretty well,
- 32:52Speaker 2: pretty solidly, all the way throughout the ballgame and knocking
- 32:56Speaker 2: off the defending national champions. Now, it's a different UCLA team.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Lauren Betts has moved on. She's playing in Europe. Her
- 33:05Speaker 2: younger sister, Sienna, was the only returning starter from that team.
- 33:10Speaker 2: It's kind of like Modest with Texas being the only
- 33:13Speaker 2: returning starter from the Sweet 16 team for the men
- 33:15Speaker 2: a season ago. Sienna Betts, the only returning starter from
- 33:19Speaker 2: the UCLA women's team that won the national title, but
- 33:22Speaker 2: they had an influx of really talented transfers as well. Nevertheless,
- 33:26Speaker 2: Longhorns controlled the game pretty much from start to finish,
- 33:29Speaker 2: played a much better total game than they did in
- 33:31Speaker 2: that preseason exhibition opener a week ago. up at UConn
- 33:36Speaker 2: and that was one of the things I visited with
- 33:38Speaker 2: head coach Vic Schaefer about after the game you know
- 33:40Speaker 2: when we visited uh in the pre-game Vic you you
- 33:43Speaker 2: said we got to have uh some other guys do
- 33:45Speaker 2: some scoring and I think you you saw that today
- 33:48Speaker 2: I bet your.
- 33:48Speaker 9: Overall impressions of what you saw man really pleased with
- 33:51Speaker 9: uh with our effort um we had four turnovers at
- 33:56Speaker 9: half we ended up with nine I'm gonna take that
- 33:57Speaker 9: just about every night um You know, I thought we
- 34:01Speaker 9: had some kids really step up and played well tonight.
- 34:04Speaker 9: Preston was really good, going four for five from three.
- 34:07Speaker 9: That is a bonus for sure. Cunningham, monster, you know,
- 34:14Speaker 9: 16 and six. Really did a nice job for us.
- 34:18Speaker 9: Booker's got six assists, one steal, got two blocked shots.
- 34:23Speaker 9: She's seven rebounds. So 21 points and just had a
- 34:29Speaker 9: big night and Van really helped us tonight. Five for 10,
- 34:32Speaker 9: two for four from three. So we had some people
- 34:34Speaker 9: step up and that's what you want to see. And again,
- 34:37Speaker 9: we're trying to figure out rotations right now. We had
- 34:41Speaker 9: 20 points off turnovers, 34 points in the paint. And
- 34:44Speaker 9: I thought we really executed some great stuff. Obviously the
- 34:47Speaker 9: third quarter plus nine really came out of halftime and
- 34:51Speaker 9: I thought did what we want to do.
- 34:53Speaker 4: We want to punch first.
- 34:54Speaker 2: And so just proud of our kid.
- 34:57Speaker 9: I thought we played way harder tonight, to be honest
- 34:59Speaker 9: with you, Craig.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:01Speaker 9: You know, we played hard the first half at Connecticut,
- 35:05Speaker 9: but I just thought we, for whatever reason, we left
- 35:08Speaker 9: it in the locker room. And I thought tonight, you know,
- 35:12Speaker 9: we played pretty hard both ends. We're still learning. Like,
- 35:15Speaker 9: you know, we just... We're learning the game, you know,
- 35:18Speaker 9: in some instances. Understanding shot clock and end of the quarter.
- 35:22Speaker 9: And we don't want to take a shot for 12 seconds.
- 35:24Speaker 9: And so, you know, just doing a lot of different things.
- 35:27Speaker 9: But I love the lineup tonight. I love them guards, boy.
- 35:30Speaker 9: It's hard to guard us now when you got those,
- 35:32Speaker 9: you know, you got all those weapons out there. And,
- 35:34Speaker 9: of course, when you go 9 for 19 from 3,
- 35:36Speaker 9: it just makes life easier. The media will get off
- 35:39Speaker 9: my butt around here if you're thinking I ain't got nobody.
- 35:41Speaker 2: About three pointers. Yeah, about.
- 35:43Speaker 9: Me not wanting people to shoot it when that's not
- 35:45Speaker 9: the case. I just want them to make it.
- 35:46Speaker 2: You know?
- 35:47Speaker 9: And, uh, so, um, you know, taking 19 threes and
- 35:52Speaker 9: I thought all of them were good threes for the
- 35:53Speaker 9: most part. So, um, I probably the worst thing we
- 35:56Speaker 9: did went 10 for 17th free throw line. So really
- 36:00Speaker 9: pleased with our kids and, uh, really appreciate now Maxwell
- 36:04Speaker 9: and his support of this event today and the Maxwell
- 36:07Speaker 9: family of dealerships, just how successful You know, that guy,
- 36:10Speaker 9: that man is an incredible man in our community. His
- 36:13Speaker 9: family is such an incredible family in our community. They
- 36:17Speaker 9: support the hospitals and they support our program.
- 36:21Speaker 2: And Niall is a dear friend.
- 36:22Speaker 9: He's somebody I just have so much tremendous respect and
- 36:25Speaker 9: admiration for and love him.
- 36:27Speaker 2: I mean, he's just a good, good, generous man.
- 36:29Speaker 9: And for him to be the title sponsor today, I
- 36:33Speaker 9: can't say enough about him. And then finally to Corey
- 36:36Speaker 9: and Coach Close for coming here with her team and
- 36:40Speaker 9: um you know they're really good uh they're gonna be
- 36:42Speaker 9: great you know we're all gonna be way better in
- 36:44Speaker 9: a month two months three months than we were today
- 36:47Speaker 9: but that was their first game out of the box
- 36:50Speaker 9: kind of like the way we were monday night so
- 36:52Speaker 9: you know they'll be better the next game and and
- 36:55Speaker 9: she's got a lot of new faces they're just older
- 36:57Speaker 9: than my new faces so with.
- 37:00Speaker 2: That in mind and you have the one exhibition game
- 37:03Speaker 2: left against eastern new mexico how beneficial is it now
- 37:07Speaker 2: with the rules changed to have the three full exhibitions
- 37:10Speaker 2: be able to do that? Well, I think it's a
- 37:12Speaker 2: great advantage.
- 37:13Speaker 9: Like I told you in the pregame, like next year
- 37:14Speaker 9: I told Elena, I want to play still these two
- 37:17Speaker 9: good teams.
- 37:18Speaker 2: I just don't want to play them this early.
- 37:20Speaker 9: I don't know that I was ready for a Connecticut,
- 37:23Speaker 9: the number 10 team in the country after 15 practices,
- 37:25Speaker 9: 16 practices. So, you know, just understanding, yeah, we can
- 37:30Speaker 9: backload them, maybe play the one we're fixing to play first.
- 37:34Speaker 2: And back load them a little bit.
- 37:36Speaker 12: But, you know, again, we're not going.
- 37:40Speaker 9: To get any better unless we play some good folks. And,
- 37:43Speaker 9: you know, I think our freshmen there are getting a
- 37:45Speaker 9: little bit of a baptism.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Good, bad, or indifferent.
- 37:48Speaker 4: It's okay.
- 37:49Speaker 9: Like, we've practiced 21 times.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Like, I know what this looks like.
- 37:53Speaker 9: So there's not going to be any panic or anything
- 37:55Speaker 9: like that.
- 37:56Speaker 6: All right.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Hey, appreciate the time. Congrats on the win. Hey, you
- 37:58Speaker 2: know what's even better?
- 38:00Speaker 4: Coach Harston looks really good.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Doesn't she?
- 38:02Speaker 2: Man, it's good to see her. I am so glad
- 38:04Speaker 2: to see her.
- 38:04Speaker 1: And she is tough as nails.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Oh, well, yeah.
- 38:08Speaker 9: I didn't see her as a player, but they always
- 38:09Speaker 9: told me she was pretty tough as a player.
- 38:11Speaker 2: And I know what she's like as a coach. So
- 38:13Speaker 2: I got experience with that. So it's great to see her.
- 38:16Speaker 4: We love her.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Thanks, Vic. Praise the Lord and hook them horns.
- 38:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Vic's comment for my broadcast partner, Kathy Harston. And back
- 38:24Speaker 2: for another season with us working on the broadcast. The
- 38:27Speaker 2: women do have one more exhibition game. It'll be Thursday
- 38:30Speaker 2: night against Eastern New Mexico. That game at Moody Center
- 38:34Speaker 2: at 7 o'clock. Free admission if you want to come
- 38:36Speaker 2: out and get a look at Vic's team on Thursday night.
- 38:39Speaker 2: The regular seasons begin next week. A week from tonight
- 38:42Speaker 2: for the men against Chicago State at Moody Center. It's
- 38:45Speaker 2: an 8 o'clock tip a week from tonight. 7.30 airtime
- 38:50Speaker 2: here on The Zone. And on 98.1 at KVET FM.
- 38:55Speaker 2: And then the women a week from Wednesday against FDU,
- 39:02Speaker 2: and that'll be Fairleigh Dickinson. That will be a week
- 39:06Speaker 2: from Wednesday night. All right, coming up back to football,
- 39:09Speaker 2: we'll hear more from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian when
- 39:11Speaker 2: we continue on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone
- 39:14Speaker 2: and the iHeartRadio app. Got a lot of having some
- 39:17Speaker 2: grand funk on Monday here. A Longhorns Monday here on
- 39:22Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. Let's hear some
- 39:27Speaker 2: more from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian from the press
- 39:31Speaker 2: conference heard earlier live today, this morning, here on the
- 39:35Speaker 2: zone at 1130 Sark, being asked about a variety of things.
- 39:39Speaker 2: And it was asked to how does a coach and
- 39:42Speaker 2: a coaching staff, and for that matter, the players from within,
- 39:45Speaker 2: manage the emotional stress you know, baggage that comes with
- 39:52Speaker 2: a win like this. And if there are such things
- 39:55Speaker 2: as mental hangovers and if they are real.
- 39:57Speaker 4: I just felt like, um, you know, in the third
- 40:02Speaker 4: quarter there, we had really lost momentum of the game.
- 40:06Speaker 4: I mean, it was evident you guys were there. The
- 40:08Speaker 4: fans were there that we did not start the third
- 40:10Speaker 4: quarter the way we would have liked. Um, And we
- 40:14Speaker 4: got to a fourth, and I don't even know if
- 40:15Speaker 4: it was all of one. It might have been less
- 40:17Speaker 4: than one. And I really liked the call that we had.
- 40:19Speaker 4: You know, a lot of fourth downs are, do you
- 40:22Speaker 4: like your call that you're going to call? And I
- 40:25Speaker 4: really liked the call that we had, and I felt
- 40:26Speaker 4: like we had an opportunity to get some momentum back
- 40:29Speaker 4: in our side, get the crowd back in our favor.
- 40:31Speaker 4: And so we went for it, and we got it. Obviously,
- 40:36Speaker 4: that's not been the first time we've done that.
- 40:39Speaker 2: I remember.
- 40:40Speaker 4: I think Florida here a couple years back going for
- 40:42Speaker 4: it kind of on our own 25 or 26-yard line,
- 40:45Speaker 4: something like that. So it's not totally foreign to us. But, again,
- 40:49Speaker 4: you go for it in those situations when you really
- 40:51Speaker 4: like the call, right? If I wasn't loving what we had,
- 40:54Speaker 4: that's probably a punt-type scenario. But I felt good about
- 40:57Speaker 4: the call, and we obviously got the first down with
- 40:58Speaker 4: the run to Relique. You know, I do think, you know,
- 41:02Speaker 4: these emotional games can– you know, there's a thing called
- 41:09Speaker 4: relief syndrome, right? It's like you win a game like
- 41:12Speaker 4: that and the natural thing is to take a deep breath,
- 41:16Speaker 4: sit back and make, whew, we're good. We got that win.
- 41:20Speaker 4: And that was my whole message to this team this
- 41:23Speaker 4: morning is there is no relief syndrome around here. And
- 41:26Speaker 4: I went through the whole definition of what is relief syndrome.
- 41:29Speaker 4: And then I went through the whole definition of what
- 41:31Speaker 4: is Mamba mentality, right? And what is that ability to reset, refocus,
- 41:35Speaker 4: continuing to build towards another victory the next week and
- 41:39Speaker 4: not just rest on a laurels of a win Saturday night.
- 41:42Speaker 4: And so The one thing I like about our team,
- 41:45Speaker 4: I think that they hear messages really well and they
- 41:48Speaker 4: try to apply what we talk about. And I felt
- 41:51Speaker 4: that today when we went back on the grass, that
- 41:54Speaker 4: they were engaged. They understood it. The mission this week
- 41:57Speaker 4: is 1-0 again because we can't think down the road
- 42:01Speaker 4: too far. We can't. Think about what just happened. We
- 42:04Speaker 4: got to think what's right in front of us, which
- 42:06Speaker 4: we touched on last week about the whole windshield analogy
- 42:08Speaker 4: compared to the rearview mirror. So we're focused on what's
- 42:11Speaker 4: right in front of us. It's 1-0 this week and
- 42:13Speaker 4: putting forth the right effort and energy in practice and
- 42:16Speaker 4: then taking practice to the game. And that's something that
- 42:20Speaker 4: we did well Saturday. I think we can do it
- 42:22Speaker 4: even better. But that's the mindset that we're at. But
- 42:24Speaker 4: I don't disagree that you can get relief syndrome after
- 42:28Speaker 4: an emotional win like that Saturday night. And that's what
- 42:31Speaker 4: we're fighting against.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Okay, so this relief syndrome thing, it got me to thinking.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Unless Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb and Devontae Smith all
- 42:41Speaker 2: have big games tonight, My 5-1 fantasy football team is
- 42:45Speaker 2: going to lose to a 1-5 team. So maybe it
- 42:47Speaker 2: was relief syndrome for me after coming off a tightly
- 42:52Speaker 2: contested game and a win last week. But as far
- 42:55Speaker 2: as relief syndrome goes, with a guy who had to
- 42:58Speaker 2: play with that edge we were talking about last week,
- 43:00Speaker 2: Arch Manning, it was our colleague Roger Wallace asked this question.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Could edgy Arch... be less, you might say, susceptible to
- 43:10Speaker 2: the relief syndrome thing?
- 43:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, to him, you know, I think at
- 43:14Speaker 4: this stage, he's always responded well. You know, sometimes responded
- 43:22Speaker 4: really well in moments. Sometimes it was the next week.
- 43:26Speaker 4: And again, I thought he competed well. I mean, he
- 43:29Speaker 4: made some throws the other night with guys in his face.
- 43:31Speaker 4: The touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo is elite. I mean,
- 43:34Speaker 4: there's a guy in his lap and to throw that
- 43:36Speaker 4: ball to Wingo for the touchdown. I thought the throw
- 43:39Speaker 4: to Cam was an elite throw. I think the third
- 43:42Speaker 4: play of the game, the throw to Emmett on the
- 43:44Speaker 4: option route where the backers unblocked, we don't block it right.
- 43:47Speaker 4: And he delivers a strike. And so there were some
- 43:49Speaker 4: elite throws. There was some little bit of bad luck
- 43:54Speaker 4: involved in the game. But he'll be ready. You know,
- 43:58Speaker 4: Arch is always ready to go. And he's in a
- 44:00Speaker 4: great frame of mind, like I said, right now. I
- 44:03Speaker 4: think there's been a lot of fuel put on his fire.
- 44:06Speaker 4: He's competing at a high level. He's dialed in. And
- 44:09Speaker 4: I think we'll get a similar version of aggressiveness and
- 44:12Speaker 4: intent in the way he played. I thought he ran
- 44:15Speaker 4: the ball really well the other night. Short yardage, first
- 44:17Speaker 4: down run, couple of touchdown runs in the low red.
- 44:20Speaker 4: Like that's the Arch Manning that gives us the best
- 44:23Speaker 4: chance to be successful.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Back to the defense and back to the first half,
- 44:26Speaker 2: there was a big four down stand with Raheem Biles
- 44:29Speaker 2: picking off the pass on fourth down and goal. there
- 44:33Speaker 2: for Ole Miss late in the first half. And Sark
- 44:36Speaker 2: was asked to kind of diagram how that play kind
- 44:39Speaker 2: of unfolded. It was our friend Bobby Burton who asked
- 44:41Speaker 2: the question about were they positioned in that specific area
- 44:45Speaker 2: on purpose? Was that done by scheme or was that
- 44:48Speaker 2: done by player reaction?
- 44:49Speaker 4: You guys know me. I'm a very honest guy. I
- 44:52Speaker 4: don't BS you guys. I don't BS our team. We
- 44:56Speaker 4: were planning on playing that play a little bit differently.
- 44:59Speaker 4: We had practiced the play. They hadn't shown it, but
- 45:01Speaker 4: we had an idea that they might run it. The
- 45:04Speaker 4: players on the fly defended it a little bit differently
- 45:08Speaker 4: than we would have liked, but they did it. And
- 45:09Speaker 4: so now Coach Muschamp's got an opportunity to go clinic,
- 45:12Speaker 4: and we can be the smartest coaches in the world.
- 45:15Speaker 4: But it was a hell of a job by all
- 45:18Speaker 4: those guys. There was four of them over there sorting
- 45:20Speaker 4: that out because that was not an easy play. And
- 45:24Speaker 4: the reaction by them all to be sticky in coverage
- 45:28Speaker 4: and to guard it out the way that they did
- 45:32Speaker 4: and I was talking to Raheem about it this morning.
- 45:34Speaker 4: You know, this guy is a ball hawk, and his
- 45:36Speaker 4: first thought is pick six. but the guy grabbed his
- 45:40Speaker 4: hip after he caught the ball, so he ends up
- 45:42Speaker 4: going down. But there's the instincts that kick in, and
- 45:45Speaker 4: playing off of one another in a moment like that,
- 45:48Speaker 4: I just think is kind of indicative of some of
- 45:50Speaker 4: the playmaking ability we have on that side of the ball.
- 45:53Speaker 4: And those guys, who's involved? Jelani McDonald, Raheem Biles, Grayson Littleton,
- 45:58Speaker 4: three pretty good football players that played off of one
- 46:01Speaker 4: another and understood that, hey, This may not have been
- 46:04Speaker 4: how we practiced it, but I know we've got a
- 46:06Speaker 4: matchup three for three with a free corner on the outside,
- 46:09Speaker 4: and they were able to do that. So, no, we're
- 46:12Speaker 4: not taking credit for that one. That was the players.
- 46:14Speaker 2: Yeah, okay. He was also asked about these third quarters,
- 46:19Speaker 2: which have just been, I called them diabolical, difficult. Sark
- 46:24Speaker 2: called the third quarter the other night disastrous. You know,
- 46:28Speaker 2: that sort of thing where they've really had some struggles
- 46:30Speaker 2: in the third quarter. So what does that mean about halftime?
- 46:33Speaker 2: What's going on in the locker room at halftime? What
- 46:35Speaker 2: is halftime like in the locker room?
- 46:37Speaker 4: At our locker room, what happens is, you know, we
- 46:39Speaker 4: come together always as a staff briefly to have a
- 46:42Speaker 4: quick staff meeting, offense, defense, special teams. And I try
- 46:46Speaker 4: to point out, you know, two or three things that
- 46:48Speaker 4: I think we're doing well and two or three things
- 46:51Speaker 4: that need to get adjusted or fixed quickly. We then
- 46:54Speaker 4: break up. Offensive staff, defensive staff, special teams. We make
- 46:57Speaker 4: the adjustments. We talk about some things offensively that we
- 47:01Speaker 4: want to get to. And then we go meet with
- 47:03Speaker 4: the players. And we have the ability to watch film
- 47:07Speaker 4: at halftime now with the new rules. And so we
- 47:10Speaker 4: go through some of the issues that maybe are showing up.
- 47:12Speaker 4: We talk through some of the things we're doing well.
- 47:15Speaker 4: And then we try to put up stuff so they know,
- 47:17Speaker 4: just like we would have openers to start the game,
- 47:19Speaker 4: here's what we're going to call in the second half.
- 47:21Speaker 4: And that's probably.
- 47:23Speaker 4: On offense, the most frustrating part is like, here's what
- 47:26Speaker 4: we're going to do. Now let's go do it. And historically,
- 47:29Speaker 4: that's been good to us. It just hasn't been that
- 47:32Speaker 4: way this year. And so like everything, I'm not opposed
- 47:36Speaker 4: to making subtle tweaks and changes to what we do
- 47:39Speaker 4: at halftime. So there'll be probably a couple things we
- 47:42Speaker 4: do different this Saturday night at halftime to get ourselves
- 47:46Speaker 4: ready to go, ready to play to start the second half.
- 47:49Speaker 6: All right.
- 47:49Speaker 2: They've also had issues on third down. It's been like,
- 47:53Speaker 2: three for 12, three for 13, four for 14, things
- 47:57Speaker 2: like that on third downs in games. So is there
- 48:00Speaker 2: a consistent third down issue this team is running into
- 48:04Speaker 2: game by game?
- 48:06Speaker 4: I think it's two things. One, third and long is
- 48:09Speaker 4: not your friend, right? As an offensive team, offensive play caller,
- 48:14Speaker 4: a quarterback, like, Third and 10 plus, that's never fun.
- 48:21Speaker 4: And we've been in, we were in too many of
- 48:22Speaker 4: those the other night. Some of that, we're getting penalties.
- 48:26Speaker 4: We're trying to draw them off. We're getting called for it.
- 48:28Speaker 4: It makes the situation worse. Some of that is negative
- 48:31Speaker 4: plays on first or second down that can cause that.
- 48:34Speaker 4: So that's the first part. The previous two weeks that
- 48:38Speaker 4: led to some of our bad numbers on third down,
- 48:40Speaker 4: we were horrific in third and three or less, right?
- 48:42Speaker 4: I think we were two for eight there at one
- 48:44Speaker 4: point in a two game stretch. So Your percentages should
- 48:48Speaker 4: be 75% or better conversion rate, third and one to two,
- 48:52Speaker 4: even into three. and then you want to minimize your
- 48:55Speaker 4: third and 10 pluses. We've had a lot of third
- 48:57Speaker 4: and 10 plus, and then we weren't converting, you know,
- 49:00Speaker 4: third and one to two to three, so you add
- 49:02Speaker 4: those two things up, and we got crummy third down
- 49:04Speaker 4: numbers here over the last month or so, so we
- 49:07Speaker 4: got to be better on first and second down. We
- 49:09Speaker 4: got to execute better on third and one to two
- 49:11Speaker 4: to three, which I think we were better the other night.
- 49:13Speaker 4: Put those two things together. That should, you know, dramatically
- 49:16Speaker 4: increase our numbers and be better there, but but we
- 49:19Speaker 4: we've got to be better on first and second down
- 49:21Speaker 4: to start.
- 49:22Speaker 2: Okay all right um sark did not make an official
- 49:25Speaker 2: announcement about trevor gooseby uh the all of the reported
- 49:29Speaker 2: things is that it's a season-ending knee injury uh he'll
- 49:32Speaker 2: be out for the rest of the year there's nothing
- 49:34Speaker 2: official from the university on that yet we'll find out
- 49:37Speaker 2: more obviously with the release of the SEC student athlete
- 49:40Speaker 2: availability report coming on Wednesday. However, Sark was asked, how
- 49:46Speaker 2: does the possibility of not having Goosby change what he
- 49:51Speaker 2: wants to do with his offensive line and as a
- 49:53Speaker 2: play caller?
- 49:54Speaker 4: Going back and watching the tape, I thought Andre played
- 49:56Speaker 4: a pretty good game for, you know, you don't know
- 49:58Speaker 4: you're going to go in, then you get thrown into
- 50:00Speaker 4: live action in that level of intensity of a game.
- 50:05Speaker 4: You know, I, What the challenge is, is when you're
- 50:08Speaker 4: not used to playing, and then all of a sudden
- 50:11Speaker 4: you play 50-something plays in a row, is it's not
- 50:14Speaker 4: so much the physical intensity, it's the mental intensity, especially
- 50:17Speaker 4: as a left tackle. And you can't have those plays
- 50:21Speaker 4: where you think, hey, let me relax right here. Because really,
- 50:23Speaker 4: that's kind of what happens on the sack fumble. I
- 50:26Speaker 4: think he felt like he was in a little bit
- 50:28Speaker 4: of a comfort zone, a little bit of a groove.
- 50:30Speaker 4: And boom, next thing you know, he gets beat, sack, fumble,
- 50:33Speaker 4: balls out, bang, touchdown in the game. changes that quickly.
- 50:38Speaker 4: So I think there's a mental intensity component. I think physically,
- 50:41Speaker 4: Dre's more than capable, and there was a lot of
- 50:43Speaker 4: really good plays that he made in that game as well.
- 50:45Speaker 4: So we'll monitor it as we go. We'll always assess
- 50:48Speaker 4: our opponent, where are their strengths, weaknesses? Are there opportunities
- 50:52Speaker 4: when we can help him in different ways? But we
- 50:55Speaker 4: have the utmost confidence in Dre that he's going to
- 50:56Speaker 4: go out and play good football for us.
- 50:58Speaker 2: Okay. He was also, and Dre, of course, you know,
- 51:02Speaker 2: he was talking about Andre Kojo being able to go there.
- 51:08Speaker 2: the special teams things and and uh the the weird
- 51:12Speaker 2: pump thing it wasn't a fake pump but it unfolded
- 51:15Speaker 2: out into a run for a first down obviously the
- 51:17Speaker 2: onside kick was really bizarre with the way that bounced
- 51:20Speaker 2: off some people so sark was asked about those two
- 51:23Speaker 2: parts of the special teams issues.
- 51:25Speaker 4: The other night was funky uh you know i went
- 51:28Speaker 4: through it like The fake punt, and it ends up
- 51:32Speaker 4: being a fake punt, really wasn't a fake punt. It
- 51:36Speaker 4: was a normal punt with a rugby punter that we
- 51:39Speaker 4: didn't set the edge. And so he's like, well, let
- 51:42Speaker 4: me just keep running. And we've seen that gone the
- 51:45Speaker 4: other way where the punter goes to run it and
- 51:47Speaker 4: he doesn't make it. And so it's a risky play
- 51:50Speaker 4: on the punter's part. Their guy's obviously got a lot
- 51:52Speaker 4: of confidence. He's been there a while. So that part
- 51:54Speaker 4: was pretty disappointing that we just didn't do the simple
- 51:57Speaker 4: thing to set an edge and not let him get
- 51:59Speaker 4: outside and roll and they should be putting the ball
- 52:01Speaker 4: back to us. The onside kick. replay the tape all
- 52:06Speaker 4: over again. I still love Emmett Mosley in that position, right?
- 52:10Speaker 4: I mean, he's got the best hands on our team.
- 52:12Speaker 4: He's a confident guy. He's an experienced guy. I love
- 52:15Speaker 4: him in that position. He didn't, it just didn't happen. Like,
- 52:18Speaker 4: like sometimes like, we're all human. Sometimes we trip walking
- 52:22Speaker 4: down the side, like it can happen, right? And we're
- 52:25Speaker 4: gonna practice it more to build more confidence in that role.
- 52:29Speaker 4: It comes off of them. I don't know if there's
- 52:31Speaker 4: another guy I'd want on our defense to say, hey,
- 52:34Speaker 4: the ball's in the air, just catch it. Grayson Littleton.
- 52:37Speaker 4: He lands, the ball comes out. So sometimes that's going
- 52:40Speaker 4: to happen. But schematically, man, we block one, we block two,
- 52:44Speaker 4: we block three. I'd love to maybe move Grayson over
- 52:47Speaker 4: a little bit more to block the fourth guy. But
- 52:51Speaker 4: you have to align the balls on a tee. They
- 52:53Speaker 4: can kick it either way. You have to deploy people properly.
- 52:55Speaker 4: We had Ryan Niblett move up. We felt good about it.
- 52:59Speaker 4: We didn't make the play. That's going to happen sometimes.
- 53:01Speaker 4: It's no different than we throw a post to Cam
- 53:04Speaker 4: Coleman and I'm going to throw more posts to Cam Coleman.
- 53:07Speaker 4: Sometimes you just don't catch it. Like that's human nature.
- 53:10Speaker 4: It can happen. Um, and so those are more glaring
- 53:14Speaker 4: than putting the ball down the middle and our coverage
- 53:18Speaker 4: lanes are off and getting a punt return on you
- 53:20Speaker 4: or having a blown pump protection and getting a pump block.
- 53:24Speaker 4: The two the other night were probably a little bit more, um,
- 53:28Speaker 4: Simple that I think we can fix and rectify quicker
- 53:32Speaker 4: than not. And so, again, but that's not to take
- 53:36Speaker 4: away a great field goal block by Alex January. That
- 53:39Speaker 4: was a huge, impactful play by special teams in the game.
- 53:42Speaker 4: Not to mention he blocks an extra point. that still
- 53:44Speaker 4: goes through and is good. He gets his hands on
- 53:46Speaker 4: that too. So we're going to remain aggressive. You know,
- 53:49Speaker 4: the week before we get a punt return for a touchdown.
- 53:51Speaker 4: So we got to remain aggressive, but we got to
- 53:53Speaker 4: do the simple things well too. And I think that's
- 53:55Speaker 4: where the point of emphasis is right now.
- 53:57Speaker 2: All right. We'll hear some more from Sark coming up
- 53:59Speaker 2: next hour. We've got some NFL stuff to get to
- 54:02Speaker 2: next on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone on
- 54:04Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app. Perhaps no words, no truer words ever
- 54:15Speaker 2: spoken in the entertainment industry.
- 54:19Speaker 1: If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding.
- 54:22Speaker 4: How could you have any pudding if you don't eat
- 54:25Speaker 4: your meat?
- 54:29Speaker 2: All we are is another brick in the wall.
- 54:30Speaker 12: There it is. You sound like Gary Oldman a little
- 54:33Speaker 12: bit there.
- 54:33Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of British there. Okay, NFL notes. They
- 54:39Speaker 2: were able to play the game in Paris yesterday. There's
- 54:41Speaker 2: a lot of concern about that. They've had a lot
- 54:43Speaker 2: of civil unrest there in the capital of France. But
- 54:45Speaker 2: they did play. But there were issues. Among those, they
- 54:54Speaker 2: had to cancel a fan-watching Steelers event there for those
- 55:01Speaker 2: who didn't have tickets to that. Stade de France for that.
- 55:06Speaker 2: And then they had some other problems. You see, you
- 55:12Speaker 2: can have some shortcomings at a lot of pro sporting events,
- 55:15Speaker 2: especially in the NFL, but there's one thing you cannot
- 55:17Speaker 2: run out of. Food. And they did.
- 55:23Speaker 6: The French are already, current events aside, they're already known
- 55:27Speaker 6: for being pretty particular and easily irritated.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Sacre bleu. They... Ran out of food before halftime. A
- 55:37Speaker 2: game that attracted nearly 80,000 fans, but the stadium's concession
- 55:41Speaker 2: services reportedly struggled to meet demand. Several attendees claimed food
- 55:45Speaker 2: options had disappeared before the break, leaving many spectators searching
- 55:49Speaker 2: for alternatives. So they ran out of food before the half.
- 55:56Speaker 2: They have somebody else, somebody else said, French have run
- 56:00Speaker 2: out of food in the stadium. Just beer left. So
- 56:03Speaker 2: at least there was... that but five different concession stands
- 56:08Speaker 2: were checked 75 people in line at food trucks ran
- 56:13Speaker 2: out of food so next stop Madrid this week so
- 56:18Speaker 2: that's that's the next one it's gonna ask Almeida yeah
- 56:22Speaker 2: so that'll be that'll be this week all right the
- 56:27Speaker 2: Texans of course had played overseas and then and then
- 56:32Speaker 2: got a win and For whatever reason, they're not able
- 56:35Speaker 2: to win at home. Still unable to win at home.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Lost to the Giants in overtime, 27-21. By the way,
- 56:42Speaker 2: did you see the deal where the Giants tried to
- 56:44Speaker 2: do duck goose after the touchdown? And I forgot who
- 56:48Speaker 2: it was. One of the Texans just stepped right in
- 56:50Speaker 2: the middle of the circle. No, you're not doing that here.
- 56:52Speaker 2: Not on our field.
- 56:53Speaker 6: If only they defended the end zone a little better
- 56:56Speaker 6: before the touchdown instead of after.
- 56:58Speaker 2: And also the penalties, which D'Amico says they got to fix.
- 57:03Speaker 4: Penalties are ridiculous.
- 57:04Speaker 14: It keeps happening over and over again, so we got
- 57:08Speaker 14: to find a way to fix it or get different
- 57:11Speaker 14: people in so we don't have the same mistakes over
- 57:14Speaker 14: and over again.
- 57:15Speaker 2: Okay, next he was asked about Tank Dell getting him
- 57:17Speaker 2: back on the field.
- 57:18Speaker 14: It was very electric seeing Tank come out of the tunnel.
- 57:21Speaker 14: It was really an awesome moment. You felt the energy
- 57:25Speaker 14: from our crowd. You felt the emotions running high with
- 57:28Speaker 14: him running out of the tunnel for the first time
- 57:30Speaker 14: in two years and then be able to see him
- 57:33Speaker 14: create an explosive pass for us there. It's fun to watch.
- 57:38Speaker 14: Really excited for Tank, proud of Tank for all the
- 57:40Speaker 14: work he's put in, and happy that he was able
- 57:42Speaker 14: to contribute today by getting some plays out there. This
- 57:46Speaker 14: is just a start for him. Expect to continue to
- 57:49Speaker 14: increase his load and see him do more. for us
- 57:51Speaker 14: and create more explosive plays.
- 57:53Speaker 2: All right and what is his plan to get back
- 57:55Speaker 2: up to the standard he's expecting from his team we.
- 57:58Speaker 14: Keep playing we keep practicing well we keep I mean
- 58:00Speaker 14: going out putting the work in like we got it
- 58:03Speaker 14: at the end of the day football man it comes
- 58:05Speaker 14: down to blocking and tackling running the football the fundamentals
- 58:08Speaker 14: of the game doesn't change so we got to block
- 58:10Speaker 14: better not hold not hurt ourselves with penalties we got
- 58:14Speaker 14: to We got to protect better. We got to be
- 58:16Speaker 14: able to beat man coverage. We got to be able
- 58:18Speaker 14: to cover in man coverage. We got to be able
- 58:21Speaker 14: to tackle.
- 58:22Speaker 2: That's football.
- 58:23Speaker 4: No magical elixir.
- 58:25Speaker 14: Is going to drop out of the sky and, oh.
- 58:28Speaker 4: Now you're going to fix it.
- 58:29Speaker 14: We fix it by putting the work in and getting
- 58:31Speaker 14: better at fundamentals of football, and that's where we got
- 58:35Speaker 14: to just own it as coaches, as players. We all
- 58:38Speaker 14: got to own it, and we got to find a
- 58:39Speaker 14: way to turn this thing around.
- 58:41Speaker 2: All right. Yeah, they'll try to get a turnaround, but
- 58:44Speaker 2: it's been tough for the Texans. Of course, the Cowboys
- 58:46Speaker 2: play the Eagles tonight. Both teams in sore need of
- 58:51Speaker 2: a victory. You can hear that on 98.1 FM KBET,
- 58:53Speaker 2: 6 o'clock airtime, and the kickoff just past 720. We'll
- 58:58Speaker 2: hear from Orange Manning coming up as we wrap up
- 59:00Speaker 2: our number two on 13 Under the Zone.
- 59:03Speaker 15: Fall in, Texas, means one thing. Texas Longhorns football.

- 1:04:08Speaker 3: This one.
- 1:04:10Speaker 18: From 48 yards to.
- 1:04:13Speaker 9: Send us to overtime from the left hash mark.
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: Snap is down.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: The kick is up from Afrote.
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: And the kick is no good.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: Wide left. Texas State wins it.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: That's our own Cameron Parker with a call. Texas State's
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: Bobcats radio network from Learfield. The walk-off miss. By Utah
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: State that kept Texas State in front for the win
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: on Saturday. And now the Bobcats have won four in
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: a row. And they've kind of started, or they're now
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: above 500 at four and three. So, you talk about
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: a challenge this way, they go to Boise.
- 1:05:08Speaker 12: And Boise's playoff odds with the other results this week?
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: On the rise.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: Especially with James Madison losing last week, too. So, that helps.
- 1:05:17Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: So we'll see. And New Mexico beating North Dakota State.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: Knocked them off the pedestal. They are being really in contention.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: New Mexico is still in contention for that. Dare I
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: say it, UTSA still has a shot. North Texas still
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: has a shot. And they have to play each other still.
- 1:05:36Speaker 6: I've seen some people arguing UTSA should be ranked. I mean,
- 1:05:39Speaker 6: their only loss is here in Austin.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:05:41Speaker 9: Yep.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: It's a fair question. By the way, ESPN College Game Day.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: Did you see where they're going this week? Did I
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: read right that it was Bloomington? They're going to Bloomington, Indiana. Indiana, Minnesota. Now,
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: Minnesota's coming off that upset of Iowa. They got to
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: go to Bloomington.
- 1:05:58Speaker 12: Is it an upset? I know the odds maker.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: Well, Iowa was unbeaten and ranked, right?
- 1:06:04Speaker 12: Odds maker said it was. Now, Iowa, they had dropped
- 1:06:07Speaker 12: the game to Ohio State.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: Ohio State, right, right. But Minnesota had lost to Purdue.
- 1:06:12Speaker 12: Yeah, and Mississippi State.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: Yeah. So, anyway, they're going to be there. Florida, Georgia's
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: this week. Somebody I saw pointed out, you know, yes,
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: but Florida plays Kentucky in a couple of weeks. Maybe
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: they keep their powder dry to go to Gainesville in
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: a couple of weeks.
- 1:06:31Speaker 6: I heard Stanford Steve say that they were going to
- 1:06:34Speaker 6: go to Chapel Hill for UNC Miami before UNC lost
- 1:06:38Speaker 6: to Clemson.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:06:40Speaker 12: Or not to Clemson, to Syracuse.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: To Syracuse. And now, obviously, we know what they're holding
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: out on November 7th. That's to go to South Bend.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: for Notre Dame Miami. It makes sense on that. So anyway,
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: they're going to go there for that. Arch Manning today
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: at the press conference was asked a couple of things.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: First of all, he was asked how he continues to
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: play with that edge that was so documented last week.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: That's the plan.
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: That's what I got to go to. I feel like
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: I play best that way. So getting in that frame
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: of mind. before and throughout the games is what's key
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: for me.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: Okay, getting into that frame of mind, how do you
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: get into the mindset of continuing to play with the edge?
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: I think it helps when you're coming off two losses.
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: But I think we had a really good week of
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: practice and just kind of carried it over to the game.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: All right, does he need to be even more of
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: a leader than he has been with Trevor Goosby out
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: for who knows how long?
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: That's a big blow. Trevor is a vocal leader and
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: did everything right. So just continuing to step up and,
- 1:07:42Speaker 5: you know, back to work this Monday.
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: All right. He was also asked how the team can
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: be better in the third quarter since they've had issues
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: in there.
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: We've got to start fast in the second half. I
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: feel like we've done a good job in the past
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: few weeks of, you know, the first drive being pretty
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: good for the most part.
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: And we've got to continue that in the third quarter.
- 1:07:59Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: And the run game did kind of pick up, and
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: it did flourish late.
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: The runners ran really hard, and there was a bunch
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: of different guys that Good seeing Mike Terry in there.
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: He played really well. And then the O-line was gritty
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: the whole time. They strained for four quarters, which was
- 1:08:17Speaker 5: cool to see.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: One more from Arch. He was asked what his favorite
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: part of the game was in an exchange with reporters.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: Probably when Relique ran over that safety. That was funny. Yeah,
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: I was not about it.
- 1:08:29Speaker 5: Put my head in there.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: Okay, there you go. We'll hear some more from Arch
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: Manning coming up next hour. We're going to hear more
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian next hour. More pro
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: football notes, college football notes, and more. We still have
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: another hour of the program to go. Longboards have one
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: more of those home games on this second three-game homestand
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: this week against Mississippi State. Hey, they're trying to get
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: bowl eligible. Do that and get these six wins.
- 1:09:00Speaker 10: Now?
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: I look at that like how teams like the Brewers
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: or the Rays, even the Dodgers, whatever, when they would
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: like clinch a playoff spot, they have like a glass
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: of champagne was it. Then, you know, win a division,
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: you might spray a little bit, then more. If you
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: win the wild card series, there's a stepping stone. So
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: clearly there are much higher goals than just being bowl eligible.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: That would be the next landing step. They're on the
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: way to bigger and better things. One more hour to
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: go here on 13 out of the zone.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: From Darryl K.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: Royal, Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, it's the Texas Longhorns
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: against the Ole Miss Rebels.
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: Near the right hash, out of the hold of the punter, Max.
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: Chimeno, trade to Buck is the snap to give Texas
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: the first points of the ballgame. Good snap and hold,
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: and the kick is up.
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: And the kick is good.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: The Longhorns get a three and out on defense, and
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: then a field goal drive on offense, and they score first.
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: Channels with a snap, looks to throw, sends it over
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: the middle, that ball intercepted by Justin Pryor! Pryor turns
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: it outside to look for it, and Texas gets the.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: Turnover right back! with a senior transfer just inspired.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: Stepped in front of the pass, and the Longhorns get
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: a turnover right back with a 14-yard return. Ryan Wingo,
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: Lee Brown in it, running back in the pistol. Play action.
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: Manning, being chased.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: Got rid of it.
- 1:10:26Speaker 14: Ball caught.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: Turn it up.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: Fields Wingo to the 40. 45.
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: Wingo up the sidelines. Midfield to the 40. Tucks inside
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: to the 40. And a first down for Jackson.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: Ryan Wingo, some nifty running after the catch before Antonio
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: Pike could run him down. But it's a first down
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: for the Longhorns. A 38-yard stride.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: Manning to take the snap. A first and goal.
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: Arch Burns keeps it himself. Manning cuts inside. To the
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: goal line.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: Touchdown, Texas.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: Arch Manning.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: And a nice cut inside once he saw the block.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: And the Longhorns have their first touchdown. Arch Manning has
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: his first rushing touchdown.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: Of the season.
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: Chattel with shotgun.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: Has the snap. Play action.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Arch looking to throw. Steps up in the pocket.
- 1:11:06Speaker 9: Presses it up.
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: Going deep.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Downfield for Waco.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: He caught it.
- 1:11:10Speaker 12: Touchdown, Texas!
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: Ryan Wingo right over the shoulder.
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: A beautiful catch. And the Longhorns have another score.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: Manning will take the snap.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: From under center. First down and going hand-off. Michael Terry
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: blasted across for a touchdown.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: Michael Terry's first touchdown. And Longhorn gets it across.
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: And Texas is now up by three touchdowns. Fourth down
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: and goal of the Texas two-yard line. Jambles out of
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: the shotgun. Has the snap.
- 1:11:38Speaker 11: Looks.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: Pumps. Over the middle. Intercepted by Raheem Biles.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Biles stepped right in front of Alexander.
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: It's a pick.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: Another turnover. Forced by Texas.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: And the Longhorns hold with a minute 37 remaining in
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: the half. March out of the pistol as the snap turns,
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: hands it around again, cuts up the middle, does a.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: Nice job, 25, 30, there goes Brown, to the 40, the.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: Lead to midfield with a 40 and one down.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: In Ole Miss territory.
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: He also thought he got face masked. That wasn't called.
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: But a late grab with a huge run. Just when
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: the Longhorns really needed it.
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: Into Ole Miss territory. With Amari Winston as the fullback.
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: Under center. Manning to take the snap.
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: On second and goal.
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: Inside.
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: The Ole Miss one. Play action. Rolling to the right side.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: Arch Manning trots into the end zone.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: On a bootleg. And the Longhorns are back in front.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: 58-yard field goal drop. Trying to pull Ole Miss to
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: the end.
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: Good snap and hold. Kick on the way, and it's blocked.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: They've got a hand on it. Longhorn's got a hand
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: on it. It's no good, and Texas will take over.
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: Handing out of the shotgun at the turn. He'll hand
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: him to Brown.
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: Police cuts it up. 40 breaks.
- 1:13:04Speaker 11: A tackle.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: Outside to the 40.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Brown with the 20. Well, it stays in Brown.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: Now as it goes down at the 16-yard line. Parker
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: would have kept running anyway, but that's all right. We'll
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: take that down to the 16-yard line.
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: A gain of 28 yards. How about this running game
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: just coming to life here in the fourth quarter?
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: Now he's ready to try a 33-yard field goal. Good
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: snap and hold, the kick on the way, and Gianni
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: Spinnick's kick is good.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: Spinnick knocks it through, and the Longhorns have a.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: 10-point lead with 2.25 remaining in the ballgame.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: One second left. Put it at Chandler's for the shotgun.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: Pass to staff.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: Chambliss rolling to the right, looking to heave it for
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: the end zone.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: Throws it down there.
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: Intercepted in the end zone. Jelani McDonald picks it off.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: And the ball game is over.
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: The Longhorns bounce back with a huge win over the
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: seventh-ranked team in the country. Final score, the Texas Longhorns 34,
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: the Ole Miss Rebels 27. Which makes three wins over top.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: 15 ranked opponents this season. That leads the country in
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: that area. Yeah, they got a couple of losses to
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: unranked teams, but so do a bunch of others have
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: losses to unranked teams. Here we go with hour number three. Sorry,
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: didn't mean to channel my inner Dak Prescott there for me.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: Here we go!
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: Hour number three.
- 1:14:31Speaker 12: Save that for the Manning cast tonight.
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. It'll be happening tonight. I always enjoy
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: what's happening. Well, I'll be flipping between that and the
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: World Series game three of that. Third hour of the
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: program here on 13 Under the Zone, Craig Way, and
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: the producer, Jay Kerman, with you up until 5 o'clock.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: Bucky and BK coming up at that point. The Longhorns,
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: with the win, go to 5-2. But as we've heard
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: from Steve Sarkeesian throughout the program, this being a Longhorns Monday,
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: we carried the news conference live this morning at 11.30
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: and then brought you excerpts from it today. in the
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: 2 o'clock hour and 3 o'clock hour. We'll bring up
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: some more coming up here in this 4 o'clock hour.
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: And one thing that Sark has continued to echo is
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: there are still areas to be better, to clean up.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: Folks have pointed it out on special teams. Absolutely. Got
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: to be better on that. A little while ago, it
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: was pointed out, you know, if 10 penalties is ridiculous,
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: what's 14? Stupid ridiculous. You just can't. have that many
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: and um i thought there was good explanation on some
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: of those there's some quite frankly i you know and
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: they've sent it off to the sec office to let
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: them look at it and i've seen it uh since
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: then there were two false start calls against texas when
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: clearly ole miss players jumped into the neutral zone but
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: that would only reduce it to 12. If you had that,
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: even if you take away two of the pass interference
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: calls are borderline, that would only reduce it to 10.
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: So the point is made. They've got to be better
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: in that area for sure. There's a fine line between
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: aggressive and being reckless on that. So that's one area
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: that Sark has talked about. We'll hear him talk more
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: about that as well. The Longhorn men's basketball team played
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: exhibition game against St. John's at Madison Square Garden yesterday
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: in New York. Lost that one 87-74. They're done with
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: their exhibitions. They will have the season opener a week
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: from tonight against Chicago State at Moody Center. Quick trivia.
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: Chicago State mascot?
- 1:16:50Speaker 12: Oh, it's green. Their color is green.
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: That's good.
- 1:16:53Speaker 12: I got that far. Oh, it's some kind of a cat.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: Oh, very good.
- 1:16:56Speaker 12: Is it a cougar?
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: Very good.
- 1:16:58Speaker 12: Give me that, Greg.
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: Chicago State Cougars, who actually are playing football now.
- 1:17:03Speaker 12: Yeah, I noticed that.
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: They're one of those teams.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: Not well, but they're playing football.
- 1:17:07Speaker 12: There's also that.
- 1:17:08Speaker 6: There's one of those teams like Mississippi Valley State where
- 1:17:10Speaker 6: their schedule is just 11 or 12 premier non-conference games,
- 1:17:17Speaker 6: gauntlet of Big 12 SEC.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: All on the road. All on the road. Paycheck games.
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: No doubt. And that happens every year, you'll see. So
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: we're trying to subsidize and supplement the entire athletic department,
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: especially A school like Chicago State would just start it
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: up of football as well. Anyway, week from tonight, Longhorn
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: men season opener against Chicago State at Moody Center. It's
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: an 8 o'clock tip. Pre-game start time. Eddie Orn will
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: join me for that at 7.30. Texas women won yesterday.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: Pretty impressive over the UCLA Bruins, defending national champs. They're
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: a completely different looking team than UCLA, but still number
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: 11 in the country. They've got some high-quality players. on
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: that Texas got the win by 17, 81-64. They have
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: one more exhibition game against Eastern New Mexico. That comes
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: up Thursday night at 7 o'clock at Moody, and it's free.
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: For folks who want to go out there and park
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: in Mainer Garage for free and see the game for free,
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: might as well go out there and take a look
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: at Vic Schaefer's ball club and get ready. They open
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: the season a week from Wednesday at home against Fairleigh. Dickinson.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: I want to go back to college football and then
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: after the break we'll hear some more from Sark. SEC
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: did announce South Carolina will send $ 500, 000 to the University
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: of Tennessee after Gamecocks fans flooded the turf there at
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday following their 27-24 season. to be the
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: upset score to have, 27-24. It's the third SEC field-storming
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: fine of the 2026 season and the first in Columbia
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: under that flat-rate system now where if it's in a
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: conference game, you send the cash to the team you
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: just beat. Tennessee had to do it to Alabama. And
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: now South Carolina is through with Tennessee. So Tennessee gets
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: their money back. They get the cash back on that deal.
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: Yeah, and there were a couple of South Carolina fans
- 1:19:18Speaker 6: getting in the face of Tennessee players.
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: Saw some of that.
- 1:19:21Speaker 12: You never want to see any of that. But what
- 1:19:23Speaker 12: a month it has been.
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: Another, dare I say, happy Cocktober to South Carolina Gamecocks fans.
- 1:19:29Speaker 12: This is a trend for them under Shane Beamer.
- 1:19:32Speaker 9: Yep, yep.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: So it's happening there. The updated... College football playoff and
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: bowl projections are out from the two guys from ESPN,
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schleybaugh. Bonagura is not convinced still
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: that Texas can be in the playoff. Schleybaugh has changed
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: his tune on that. Both had the Longhorns out after
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: their loss to Florida last week. Now the way it's
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: set up, both have Boise State in as the 12
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: seed and Bonagura has them at the 5C, which he has, Georgia,
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: and Slaball says it'll be UCLA. Boise, as we pointed out,
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: is hosting Texas State this week. Big game for both
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: those teams. If Boise now, you'd have to say, is
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: in the driver's seat for getting the G6 spot, if
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: they can run the table from there and know win
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: the Pac-12 that sort of Pac-12 by the way does
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: not have a conference championship game if I'm remembering correctly
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: they don't have a conference title.
- 1:20:37Speaker 6: Game right just the adaptive the flex scheduling at the
- 1:20:41Speaker 6: end there.
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: The regular season so anyway that's what will happen so
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: um Boise is is picked by both Bonagura and Slaball
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: to be in the playoff as the 12 seed Bonagura
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: has them taking on Georgia, the five seed. Schleybaugh has
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: them taking on UCLA as a five seed. The 11
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: versus six game, both have Indiana as the six. Bonagura
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: says the 11 seed will be Alabama. Schleybaugh says it'll
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: be Ole Miss. The 10 versus seven matchup, Bonagura says
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: it's going to be Wake Forest. So he's counting on
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: Wake Forest. other than Miami to be... In other words,
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: it'd be two ACC schools in there to play at
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: number seven BYU. How about this one? Slay Ball has Texas,
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: the 10th seed, in the playoff at number seven seed.
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: Wait for it. Kentucky. How about that?
- 1:21:37Speaker 6: Yeah, what a season that Kentucky's had. Their resume is
- 1:21:40Speaker 6: as good as anybody's. That's why they're ahead of Alabama,
- 1:21:44Speaker 6: even though Alabama went there and beat them by four scores.
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. And so... That's been their one loss. The
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: one score loss or the one loss that they have
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: was to Alabama. And otherwise, they've just been really, really good,
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: Kentucky has. And so that's been impressive to see for them. Now,
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: Kentucky is off this week. They get to relax coming
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: off the win over Vanderbilt. Then they go to Knoxville.
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: They play Tennessee. Then they have Florida at home on
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: the 14th. So maybe that's where game day might be thinking.
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: a trip to Lexington on October 14th. Then they go
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: to Missouri, and then they conclude with the Battle of
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: the Commonwealth as they play Louisville. So it's not a
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: cakewalk the rest of the way, but Kentucky right now
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: sitting on top of the league standings. And again, Schlebaugh
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: has Texas in as the 10 seed. Bonagura does not
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: have Texas in the playoff. He has Wake Forest as
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: the 10 playing at BYU. And then Bonagura has Kentucky
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: as a 9 playing at 8 seed Notre Dame. He's
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: counting on Notre Dame losing to Miami. and then dropping
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: far enough to be the eight.
- 1:22:51Speaker 6: I suppose if you're going to put Wake Forest in
- 1:22:53Speaker 6: the playoff, you need Miami to be strong enough there
- 1:22:57Speaker 6: as the only team to beat Wake Forest this year.
- 1:22:59Speaker 12: So he's consistent on that.
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we'll see as that goes forward.
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: And Wake Forest does have the one loss.
- 1:23:07Speaker 12: Yeah, they lost to Miami.
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: To Miami. And I guess.
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: Like you said, I guess Montegura's figuring they're going to
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: run the table other than maybe a second loss to
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: Miami in an ACC championship game.
- 1:23:17Speaker 6: Yeah, and even then, I think they'd have to be
- 1:23:19Speaker 6: pretty competitive in that game.
- 1:23:22Speaker 12: They also have SMU on the schedule.
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: Right, right, exactly. Both teams do, right? No, Miami doesn't
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: have it. Notre Dame plays SMU.
- 1:23:31Speaker 12: So does Wake Forest.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: And Wake Forest. And, yeah. So, anyway, that's what the
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: deal is there. All right. And then, Slay Ball has
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: it as Holy War. Redo. 9 seed BYU at 8
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: seed Utah off of that. And they still have to play, right?
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: They're on the schedule.
- 1:23:50Speaker 12: They're playing in two weeks.
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: Yep. Okay.
- 1:23:53Speaker 10: Wow.
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: On the same day as Miami-Notre Dame.
- 1:23:56Speaker 9: Yep.
- 1:23:56Speaker 12: That's how they got pushed to the 11 a.m.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Kick. Yeah. The other games, they both have the five
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: seeds advancing. They have Georgia. Bonagura does to play the
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: four seed Utah getting the first round by. Schleybaugh thinks
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: Notre Dame is still going to get a bye and
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: be the four seed with UCLA the five. Then in
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: quarterfinal number two, Bonagura has the six seed Indiana against
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: the three seed UCLA. Schleybaugh has the eight seed Utah
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: against the top seed Miami. The other quarterfinal, uh, Bonagura
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: has the seven seed BYU against a two seed Ohio state.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: And Schley ball has 11 seed Ole Miss against three
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: seed Georgia. And then that final quarterfinal eight seed Notre
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: Dame against top seed Miami and a rematch. According to
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: Kyle Bonagura, Schley ball has Texas advancing as the 10
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: seed all the way to the quarterfinals to play Ohio state.
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: Does that sound familiar? Uh, uh, In the semifinals, in
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: the Orange Bowl, Bonagura says it's the three-seed UCLA against
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: the two-seed Ohio State. Schleybaugh says it's the four-seed Notre
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: Dame against the top-seed Miami. There's that rematch. In the
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: Sugar Bowl, Bonagura says four-seed Utah against one-seed Miami. Schleybaugh
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: has Texas going to the Final Four. They've got them
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: getting in the Sugar Bowl facing Georgia. And then in
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: the National Championship, Bonagura says it's the two-seed Ohio State
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: against the one-seed Miami State. Schleybaugh says the luck will
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: run out for Texas against Georgia in the semifinals, and
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: Georgia would play Miami for the national championship. So there
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: you are. In case you're wondering, Kyle Bonnegar, so he
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: did not have Texas in the playoff. Where does he
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: have Texas? If he doesn't have them in the college
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: football playoff, where does he have the Longhorns? Well, a scan,
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: because they also not only do the playoff projections. They
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: do the bowl projections. Like, for example, both are saying
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: Texas Tech's not going to make the playoff now. After
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: that loss to Cincinnati, they both have the Red Raiders
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: playing in the Alamo Bowl. Tech against Oregon, according to Bonagura.
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: Tech against USC, according, excuse me, to Schleyball. And Bonagura, again,
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: you ask, where does he have Texas if he doesn't
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: have him in the playoff? He has him in Tampa
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: in the Reliaquest Bowl against Wisconsin there on New Year's.
- 1:26:20Speaker 12: Okay.
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: Coming up, we're going to hear more from Longhorn's head coach,
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian, when we continue on Sports Radio AM 13
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Here on a
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: Longhorn's Monday on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: Here's some more from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian. Sarke, talking,
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: you know, he made a lot of comparisons to the
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: whole Mamba mentality and what my good friend and Former
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: co-host Rod Babers used to say the competitive sickness that
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: made up Kobe Bryant. So somebody asked me, hey, you
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: grew up in California. Did you know Kobe?
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: Kobe's daughter and my daughter went to high school together,
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: played volleyball together. So I got to see him in
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: person and what an impressive human being beyond basketball player.
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: And then I watched him coach Gigi's basketball team as
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: soon as the volleyball match was done. And I watched
- 1:27:19Speaker 4: him coach six little girls like it was the NBA finals.
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: And that was the level of intensity that that guy
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: brought every day. So I'm a huge fan of not
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: only of the player, but of the person, but the
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: whole Mamba mentality. And so, yeah, we definitely buy into
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: that mentality.
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: All right. He was asked also, how has his confidence
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: level in his defense been affected with the loss of
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: Colin Simmons, at least for the time being anyway?
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: As far as the defense goes, what I thought was great,
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: meeting with the defensive staff yesterday, we couldn't pick a
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: player of the game and we couldn't just pick two.
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: I mean, it was Derek Williams had a great game,
- 1:27:59Speaker 4: not having Kobe available to us. Jelani played his best
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: game of the year. Lance Jackson, without calling out there,
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: had a great game. Brad Spence had a phenomenal game.
- 1:28:10Speaker 4: Both Cryer and Biles played every snap, had a phenomenal game.
- 1:28:14Speaker 4: And so to me, I thought we played great team
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: defense the other night. And, you know, hey, believe me,
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: we want Colin back as bad as anybody, and we
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: know the impact that he can have in the game.
- 1:28:24Speaker 4: But I think what was eye-opening was nobody was just
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: waiting for Colin to make a play. It was all
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: 11 guys playing really well collectively together. I thought Grayson
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: had a great bounce back game from the week before.
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: I thought Bo Masco had a really good game compared
- 1:28:39Speaker 4: to the week before. So, but all of that was
- 1:28:41Speaker 4: a byproduct of the way they practiced and they had
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: a great week of work. So that was definitely encouraging
- 1:28:47Speaker 4: for sure.
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: He was then asked, is he evaluating his options along
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: the offensive front between Backup guards, backup tackles, number two
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: at a spot, number three at a spot, and Sarkland,
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: you know, didn't get too much into the numbers.
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: I don't feel like I'm in that mode from an
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: offensive line perspective, who's number three and who's at guard
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: and or tackle. We always assess it every week, and
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: I think healthy competition is good everywhere. And then come
- 1:29:15Speaker 4: Saturday morning, we have the depth chart meeting so that
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: everybody's on the same page, who will play when and
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: how if something occurs. And so, again, the competition will
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: be alive this week as well.
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: All right. And he was asked, is... Cam Coleman, who
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: came down on the shoulder, and we don't know the
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: position situation with him yet, but is he leaving his
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: feet too early or too much to try to make catches?
- 1:29:42Speaker 4: I don't know that Cam necessarily leaving his feet too much.
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: You know, I do think. high-pointing the football is one
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: of his strengths, right? Everybody's got strengths and weaknesses, so
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: on and so forth. His ability to high-point the ball
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: with his arm length, his hands, his ability to adjust
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: to the ball is a strength of his. So I
- 1:30:00Speaker 4: think at times he plays to his strength, but I
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: don't feel that. I don't foresee that. We haven't had
- 1:30:06Speaker 4: that discussion where we feel like he's leaving his feet
- 1:30:08Speaker 4: too much.
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: No.
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: All right. It was asked about this new Bevo Lab technology.
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: We had Senior Associate AD Drew Martin in the booth
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: with us on Saturday to talk about this new phenomenon.
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: that'll be going on going forward using AI technology and
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: a lot of other things. And with the leaning on
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: with Google labs and all of this other stuff and
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: Google cloud. And he was, uh, he was asked, um,
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: is he at a point where the Bevo lab stuff
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: is even starting to help the football program?
- 1:30:37Speaker 4: I mean, it's obviously just kind of got off the ground. Um,
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: I think it's going to behoove all of us in
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: the athletic department. Anytime that you partner with Google and
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: Gemini and the smart people they have working for them
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: and how it can help us for 12 months. I
- 1:30:55Speaker 4: think so many people hear Bevo Lab and it's like
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: just game day. There's a lot that goes into that.
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: As you all know, I believe in sports science. I
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: think we've come too far not to believe in science
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: and all that it is, whether it's from medicine to
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: you know, analytics to whatever that looks like. And so, uh, I'm,
- 1:31:13Speaker 4: I'm obviously very excited about it. I think it's a
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: great partnership and it's something that's only going to grow
- 1:31:18Speaker 4: and get better as we, as we start to work
- 1:31:20Speaker 4: ourselves through this.
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: Next, he was asked about the fact Kate Phillips continues
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: to be challenged at a couple of pass interference calls
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: against him, but he has come a ways. And how
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: about the maturation of the entire secondary? it's a talented
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: room obviously. Um, and you named off some great players.
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: I think Kobe's had a good year for us to
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: move into safety. Um, I think we're constantly trying to, uh,
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: develop the depth back there. Um, you know, we, we,
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: I think we need more people playing at a really
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: high level and that's what we're pushing them to do. Um,
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: I've been proud of Cade and his maturation and development, um,
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: Like I said, I think that was a tough call
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: on the PI in the end zone. And I think
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: that affected his ability to play the fade later in
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: the game for the other touchdown because I felt like
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: he was in good position.
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: The call didn't go our way. But I do think
- 1:32:10Speaker 4: he's playing with a lot of confidence. I think Bo,
- 1:32:13Speaker 4: his experience is starting to show. And again, he had
- 1:32:16Speaker 4: a great bounce back game four. So there's a lot
- 1:32:18Speaker 4: of experience back there. But again, you know, it's like,
- 1:32:22Speaker 4: D-Will getting back to what the D-Will was before the injury.
- 1:32:27Speaker 4: We forget.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: I forgot.
- 1:32:29Speaker 4: He was starting ahead of Andrew McCuba before he got injured.
- 1:32:32Speaker 4: Andrew McCuba is a hell of a football player, and
- 1:32:34Speaker 4: he's doing great stuff in the NFL. I think he's back.
- 1:32:37Speaker 4: And now to have he, Kobe, and Jelani back there
- 1:32:41Speaker 4: is helpful. I think we're still trying to find the
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: depth at star. or the depth at corner so we
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: can move Bo to star. Like, we just need more
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: bodies that can guard people and cover people. But I
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: think they're all playing at a high level. I mean,
- 1:32:53Speaker 4: you look at what we were able to do the
- 1:32:55Speaker 4: other night. You know, Trinidad Chambliss, I think, was coming
- 1:32:59Speaker 4: into the game. I don't have all his numbers in
- 1:33:01Speaker 4: front of me, but I think he was completing like
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: 68% of his passes and whatnot. And we held that
- 1:33:06Speaker 4: guy at a 40-something percent passing. We kept him in
- 1:33:09Speaker 4: the pocket. And that's the rush. That's the coverage. And
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: that's arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the country.
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: And we get three interceptions off him. So we have
- 1:33:18Speaker 4: the ability to play at a really high level. But
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: that mental intensity that they had throughout the week, I thought,
- 1:33:23Speaker 4: carried over to the game.
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: Well, that secondary may get a challenge if Kamario Taylor
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: is able to go, if he's healthy. And Sark was asked,
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: how do you prepare for a dynamic quarterback like that?
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: I think the first thing with Mississippi State is fast.
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: It kind of blinks into my head. They play really fast.
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: I think they snap the ball with an average of
- 1:33:43Speaker 4: 27 seconds still left on the shot clock. That's how
- 1:33:46Speaker 4: fast they want to snap the ball. They spread you
- 1:33:49Speaker 4: wide with their splits, and they play fast on the perimeter.
- 1:33:53Speaker 4: And I felt like that hurt us last year in
- 1:33:55Speaker 4: the game at their place. Their speed, their splits, their
- 1:33:59Speaker 4: ability to play in space. And then the quarterback decision-making,
- 1:34:03Speaker 4: And the accuracy of the ball, I think, is something
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: that helps their scheme. Camario has that. Now, on the
- 1:34:09Speaker 4: flip side of that, it's his legs, too. And so
- 1:34:12Speaker 4: now they've got you spread out. Now they've got a
- 1:34:15Speaker 4: four-by-one team out there running routes. And then when they want,
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: he can tuck it and run. And he's a big
- 1:34:21Speaker 4: dude who can go, and he's hard to get on
- 1:34:22Speaker 4: the ground. So you pour it all together with Levy's scheme,
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: as well as the players that they have and the
- 1:34:27Speaker 4: trigger guy. it's a problem for people for sure.
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: All right. Next, Sark was asked one more time about
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: this whole Mamba mentality thing and what he wants his
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: team to lean into. And does he have players who
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: already possess that?
- 1:34:41Speaker 4: You know, I think one, I don't think it's something
- 1:34:44Speaker 4: that you can just talk about in one meeting and
- 1:34:46Speaker 4: then move on. I think there has to be a
- 1:34:48Speaker 4: level of consistency in your messaging. It can't be something
- 1:34:52Speaker 4: that I just bring up today on a Monday and
- 1:34:56Speaker 4: I had never brought it up in the off season
- 1:34:59Speaker 4: or during training camp or even at another week in
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: the season. I think it's gotta be something that is
- 1:35:05Speaker 4: kind of part of your DNA and that grows into
- 1:35:07Speaker 4: who you are. How do I quantify it as just
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: watching the body language, watching the practice habits, hearing guys speak,
- 1:35:17Speaker 4: how they talk to one another, what are they talking about,
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: what are they saying the messaging is? And to me,
- 1:35:24Speaker 4: even today, you know, we get done, you know, conditioning
- 1:35:29Speaker 4: at the end of practice and I call them up
- 1:35:31Speaker 4: and I get into, you know, want to know mindset
- 1:35:34Speaker 4: this week, they're already talking about no relief. Like I
- 1:35:38Speaker 4: can hear guys, I hear Jelani saying it even before
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: I can get to it. And so that's a really
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: good sign that they're, they think like me, you know,
- 1:35:47Speaker 4: on a lot of levels. And it's a lot of
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: guys who have been around the program for a while, right?
- 1:35:51Speaker 4: And then how well do they spread that message in
- 1:35:56Speaker 4: and around downstairs in the locker room, in the training room,
- 1:35:59Speaker 4: in the weight room, on the walk to and from practice, right?
- 1:36:02Speaker 4: What are they talking about? And if that, if that's
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: the topic of discussion sooner or later, that's going to
- 1:36:08Speaker 4: spread throughout our locker room and then it becomes a belief, right?
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: And so, um, I'm not saying it happens overnight. I
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: think it takes time. I think some guys innately have it.
- 1:36:18Speaker 4: I think some guys, it might be a little new
- 1:36:20Speaker 4: to them, but that doesn't mean that we can't change
- 1:36:22Speaker 4: the mindset and the habits of what it looks like,
- 1:36:25Speaker 4: how to do it. And then celebrating the moments when
- 1:36:29Speaker 4: we do do it the right way. And I think
- 1:36:31Speaker 4: that that's probably the most important thing. That's why, like, yes,
- 1:36:37Speaker 4: we had a sack fumble for a touchdown, right? Yes,
- 1:36:39Speaker 4: we threw an interception. Yes, we didn't recover an onside kick.
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: But the mentality that we had to respond to that adversity,
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: I'm celebrating that too. As much as I'm trying to
- 1:36:50Speaker 4: correct the other things, I need to celebrate the response
- 1:36:53Speaker 4: to that adversity because I thought that was at a
- 1:36:56Speaker 4: really high level.
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: All right, and then one more from Sarg. He was
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: asked about the defensive leaders of this team, like Justin
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: Cryer and some of the other guys, how meetings went
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: on between those guys after last week's game.
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: I've met with a lot of players individually after the
- 1:37:14Speaker 4: Florida game, on offense and on defense. And the response
- 1:37:20Speaker 4: was the way they worked in practice. And practice was fast.
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: I mean, I just gave you the numbers of how
- 1:37:26Speaker 4: hard they went, the physicality of it all. We knew
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: we needed to be physical against Ole Miss, their ability
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: to run the ball. And so when you practice that way,
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: and it was no thud, no play mentality, then you
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: don't have to try to turn it on when the
- 1:37:42Speaker 4: game comes. We're tracking the ball. There were some amazing plays.
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: There's a scramble two different times on third down when
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: Chambliss gets out of the pocket, and you see Brad
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: Spence break out of the stack and get a tackle
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: short of the first down. You see another scramble by
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: him on third and 10, and Derek Williams is like
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: 23 yards from the line of scrimmage, and his break
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: on the quarterback to force him out of bounds, to
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: force a fourth and five. It's the intent, but that
- 1:38:11Speaker 4: intent comes from practice. And so when the game rolls around,
- 1:38:15Speaker 4: it's a reaction as opposed to, do I have to
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: think about it? And I thought we reacted well, and
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: I thought we played really physically. But again, a lot
- 1:38:23Speaker 4: of that was a byproduct, I think, of the discussions
- 1:38:25Speaker 4: and the feelings after the Florida game, and then the
- 1:38:28Speaker 4: work they put in throughout the week.
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: All right. We've got more coming up. We'll hear from
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: Arch Manning and a couple other items when we continue
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: on 13 Under the Zone. Maybe that describes what's going
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: on in the SEC right now. Somebody posted this. See
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: if you can follow this. Florida beat Texas. Texas beat Tennessee.
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: Tennessee beat Alabama. Alabama beat Kentucky. Kentucky beat LSU. LSU
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: beat Auburn. Auburn beat Georgia. Georgia beat Oklahoma. Oklahoma beat
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: Mississippi State. Mississippi State beat Missouri. Missouri beat Florida.
- 1:39:17Speaker 12: The circle of parody.
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: That's right. So, anyway, there's a lot of that stuff
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: going on in SEC football, for sure. Texas women's basketball team,
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: impressive win over UCLA. Yeah, just an exhibition game. They
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: won 81-64 in Cedar Park. One of the things that was...
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: impressive was Brianna Preston. Bree scored in double figures. Of course,
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: she's inheriting the point guard spot from Rory Harmon, and
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: she had 20 points, went four for five from three-point range.
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: She's never done that in a collegiate game before. Today,
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: she was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Point Guard
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: of the Year watch list as well. So she's off
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: to a good start, even though it's exhibition game, but
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: we had a chance to visit with her after the
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: Texas victory yesterday. She joins us now, and who knew
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: that Bree was that outstanding a three-point shooter, right?
- 1:40:12Speaker 3: Lights out, lights out.
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: Were you feeling it today?
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: I was, I was.
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: I was focused.
- 1:40:16Speaker 12: I was ready to play today.
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: Everybody, I noticed in the media availabilities, were asking you about,
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: you know, inheriting the role, what were Rory moving on
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: and all that stuff. But the one thing I noticed
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: today is that you play your game and having Zaya
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: in there to help you, it was kind of like
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: with you and Rory anyway, right?
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: Exactly, exactly.
- 1:40:34Speaker 18: Yeah, especially on that defensive end.
- 1:40:36Speaker 12: We're really getting after her. We're communicating. We're getting better
- 1:40:39Speaker 12: each day.
- 1:40:40Speaker 18: And then she just helps me to be a point guard,
- 1:40:43Speaker 18: do what I do on the offensive end, get us
- 1:40:45Speaker 18: in our sets, hit open shots when I can. So
- 1:40:49Speaker 18: me and Ziya play really well together.
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, and then the other thing about the three-point shot,
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: I mean, certainly that's something you've worked on.
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: No, definitely.
- 1:40:57Speaker 4: Every day.
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:40:58Speaker 18: Every day, I don't, I don't work out without shooting threes, yeah,
- 1:41:01Speaker 18: sometimes it's either touch shots, and then straight to threes,
- 1:41:04Speaker 18: sometimes I don't even do the mid-range, like, I'm really
- 1:41:06Speaker 18: trying to, you know, build that confidence, so when we
- 1:41:09Speaker 18: get in late games, like, people really have to step up,
- 1:41:11Speaker 18: gotta go over screens, and that will open up the
- 1:41:13Speaker 18: court for my teammates, too.
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: Do you, you like having these exhibition games to get
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: your game in gear?
- 1:41:18Speaker 18: No, definitely, definitely, and it's great competition, like, we just
- 1:41:21Speaker 18: had UConn, and then we just played UCLA, like, Keep
- 1:41:23Speaker 18: them coming. Like we're doing really good and we're definitely
- 1:41:26Speaker 18: learning from these games.
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: So very helpful. Good job. Appreciate the time. Thank you.
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: All right. Yeah. And again, just an exhibition game, but
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: it was against an equality opponent in UCLA. So some
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: pretty exciting things to come for Texas women's basketball. The
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: Longhorns will be back on the floor. One more exhibition game.
- 1:41:47Speaker 2: that will be on Thursday night and they'll play Eastern
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: New Mexico at seven o'clock free admission, free parking over there.
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: All right. Uh, a little more from Arch Manning and, uh,
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: he was asked if, um, uh, you know, what can
- 1:42:03Speaker 2: he do in terms of, well, first of all, there
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: was this kind of funny exchange he had, um, He
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: got a chance to meet Jeremy Piven, entouraged a little bit, right?
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: And he's been re-watching it and had a little post-game
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: conversation with him.
- 1:42:18Speaker 5: I've already finished it all, but I'm back watching it
- 1:42:21Speaker 5: just kind of sporadically every other, not in any direction.
- 1:42:26Speaker 5: But I went to one of his comedy shows this
- 1:42:29Speaker 5: offseason with some guys on the team and he was hilarious.
- 1:42:31Speaker 5: Got to talk to him before and we've kept up
- 1:42:34Speaker 5: on the phone. He's hilarious and it's cool. He's probably
- 1:42:37Speaker 5: my favorite character in all of television, Ari Gold. So, um,
- 1:42:42Speaker 5: being able to talk to Jeremy Piven and, and pick
- 1:42:44Speaker 5: his brain, I guess, and just being able to laugh is, uh,
- 1:42:47Speaker 5: is refreshing.
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: He's an, he's a really nice guy. Okay. Picking his brain.
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: What'd he pick his brain about? I don't know if
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: I ever picked his brain.
- 1:42:53Speaker 5: We just caught up and, um, I told him that, uh,
- 1:42:58Speaker 5: last year we weren't playing well. I wasn't playing very well. And, uh,
- 1:43:03Speaker 5: I started watching Entourage, and then we kind of got
- 1:43:04Speaker 5: on a hot streak, and he loved that.
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: Okay, he mentioned about being with Entourage. He was asked,
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: does he have any other favorite Entourage characters?
- 1:43:16Speaker 5: I like Turtle. I like Johnny, all those guys. I
- 1:43:19Speaker 5: actually watched Napoleon Dynamite last week. It kind of gave
- 1:43:23Speaker 5: me a good mood, and I love that movie.
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: Okay. Uh, he, he did make reference to, to other
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: people in his, uh, a non football people in his, uh,
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: close circle. And are there others in his circle?
- 1:43:37Speaker 5: I kind of just talked to the same people, talk
- 1:43:39Speaker 5: to the same people in the building. Uh, my teammates,
- 1:43:42Speaker 5: you know, the student trainers, uh, leg trainers, EQ guys. Um,
- 1:43:47Speaker 5: and then my friends and that's kind of it.
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: Okay. Um, he was asked, uh, uh, uh, about the
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: running back situations. First of all, ask about Michael Terry's
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: growth that he's seen in the backfield.
- 1:44:01Speaker 5: I thought he ran hard on Saturday night. He ran
- 1:44:03Speaker 5: with an edge, a little anger behind him, so it
- 1:44:06Speaker 5: was good to see. Hopefully, he can keep that moving
- 1:44:09Speaker 5: forward and have that motivate him, that confidence.
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: And about confidence, Relique Browns has had 157 rushing yards.
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: He's a baller.
- 1:44:18Speaker 5: I'm glad he had that game on the biggest stage.
- 1:44:21Speaker 5: It shows that the type of player he is, and
- 1:44:23Speaker 5: that just shows the type of person he is. He's
- 1:44:25Speaker 5: full of energy, a great guy. I'm glad we have
- 1:44:27Speaker 5: him on our team.
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: He's awesome. Okay, so does that mean that Arch is
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: looking to block when Raleigh makes the cut back inside?
- 1:44:36Speaker 5: I was thinking about it, and I was like, nah.
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: Raleigh had already got past. I was like, I don't
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: want to. Extra soreness. Yeah, I imagine. So they're going
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: to play on Halloween night. How does he feel about that?
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:44:50Speaker 5: I might have played on Halloween in high school, but no,
- 1:44:53Speaker 5: no extra time. I got some of my high school
- 1:44:55Speaker 5: buddies coming to town, so hopefully they can see a win.
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: Okay. All right. Next, he's asked, does he have a
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: favorite Halloween costume? Not that I can think of. I might.
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: I don't know. I guess we can't dress up this
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: year if we play on Halloween. It'd be kind of weird.
- 1:45:14Speaker 10: I want to.
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:45:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going to go as Napoleon Dynamite this year. Okay.
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: About that weird deal that happened when the official told
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: him he had to leave the field for one play,
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: the whole thing with the— what was the deal with that? No,
- 1:45:29Speaker 2: I didn't get an explanation.
- 1:45:30Speaker 5: My helmet, like, kind of came up a little bit,
- 1:45:33Speaker 5: so I just wanted to adjust my hair or something,
- 1:45:37Speaker 5: and he made me go out.
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: Okay. And then one more. The need, Art says, for
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: this team and for him to play a complete game.
- 1:45:47Speaker 5: Yeah, we want to play a full, clean four quarters,
- 1:45:50Speaker 5: start fast, and keep that momentum going and stay healthy.
- 1:45:55Speaker 2: Yeah, those are all very important things. We'll be back
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: to wrap up today's edition of the program on 13
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: Under the Zone.
