Latest / Crafted Clarity: Distilling the Tension Between Success and Significance / Stop Waiting for a Better Season │ The Still Is Already Running
Transcript
- 0:02There's something I've been noticing lately, not just in
- 0:05conversations, but in how leaders are talking about where
- 0:09they are. There's this quiet sense of
- 0:12waiting, like something feels off in their leadership, their
- 0:17work, maybe even the direction they're heading.
- 0:21But they're not exactly sure what to do with it.
- 0:24So they wait. Waiting for clarity, waiting for
- 0:29the right time, waiting for things to settle down before
- 0:32they make a move. And on the surface, that makes
- 0:36sense. We tell ourselves things like I
- 0:41just need a little more time to think things will calm down
- 0:45soon, or I'll deal with it when things slow down.
- 0:51But the more I sit with it, I'm not so sure we're actually
- 0:55waiting. Because here's what I know about
- 0:58whiskey and the process of making it.
- 1:02Once it starts, it doesn't stop. From the moment the raw
- 1:07ingredients come together through fermentation,
- 1:10distillation, and years in the barrel, the process is always
- 1:15moving, always forming something, whether anyone is
- 1:19paying attention or not. And here's the thing.
- 1:24You're already in that process too.
- 1:26You're already in a season. Not a future one, and not the
- 1:31one you're trying to get to. Not even the one you wanted to
- 1:36stay in. This one, The one you're in
- 1:40right now, in your leadership, your work, your life and seasons
- 1:47don't wait for you to be ready. They don't pause while you
- 1:51figure things out, and they don't slow down just because
- 1:54you're unsure of what to do next.
- 1:58They just keep moving. And the question this episode is
- 2:02really asking isn't whether the process is happening, it's
- 2:07whether you're willing to engage with what's already in motion.
- 2:15As you heard in the opening, this episode is about a shift in
- 2:18posture. Not a strategy, not a framework.
- 2:23A posture. Because most of the leaders I
- 2:27work alongside aren't operating from a lack of information.
- 2:31They've thought about it. They know something is off, but
- 2:36they've convinced themselves they can pause, that they'll be
- 2:40a better time, more information, a clearer signal before they
- 2:45need to engage with what they're already seeing.
- 2:49And what I want to do today is name that honestly and invite
- 2:53you into a different way of being in the season you're
- 2:57actually in. But one of the things I love
- 3:01most about whiskey, and why I keep showing up in these
- 3:04conversations, is that the process of making it is one of
- 3:09the most honest mirrors I've found for the way leadership
- 3:12actually works. Here's what I mean.
- 3:17Making whiskey starts with mash, grain, water, yeast, and from
- 3:23the moment those ingredients come together, something is
- 3:27already happening. The yeast goes to work, the
- 3:31sugars begin converting in the process of fermentation, which
- 3:36is the invisible stage where nothing seems to be happening,
- 3:40but underneath everything is starting to transform.
- 3:44The distiller doesn't make fermentation happen.
- 3:47It happens because the right conditions and the right
- 3:50ingredients exist. But once a fermented liquid
- 3:54enters, the still, heat is applied and the distillation
- 3:59begins. This is where separation
- 4:02happens. What's worth keeping rises, and
- 4:07what doesn't belong falls away. The distiller watches for what
- 4:12they call the hearts, which is the purest, clearest expression
- 4:16of the spirit, and makes a cut at just the right moment to
- 4:21capture it. And once that's done, the spirit
- 4:25goes into a barrel, and then it rests for years, sometimes
- 4:31decades, expanding in the heat of summer, contracting in the
- 4:36cold of winter, being shaped by the wood around it.
- 4:42There's a lot happening even while the whiskey is sitting in
- 4:46a barrel. In fact, it's one of the most
- 4:49active stages of formation in the entire process.
- 4:53From the first moment the mash comes together to the day it's
- 4:57finally poured into the bottle, the process never actually
- 5:00stops. It can't.
- 5:04And here's where this becomes personal.
- 5:08You are already in a similar process, not waiting to enter
- 5:13it, already in it. And it's not just you.
- 5:18The organization you're leading is in motion.
- 5:22The people around you, the ones you're responsible for, the ones
- 5:26who depend on your clarity, well, they're in a Season 2.
- 5:31Everything is moving, whether anyone is paying attention to it
- 5:35or not. Which means the question isn't
- 5:38whether something is being formed, it's whether you're
- 5:42present enough to engage with what's forming.
- 5:47That word present is actually the heart of this episode.
- 5:52Not being decisive, not being certain, not even being
- 5:57resolved. Present because even if the
- 6:03Distiller steps away from the still, the process doesn't stop.
- 6:08They just lose their influence over what comes out the other
- 6:12side. And this is where I keep coming
- 6:16back to the moment stopping idea I've been sitting with lately.
- 6:20Something I recently shared that each day is not one more day,
- 6:26it's one less day. That's not a warning, it's a
- 6:31perspective. Every day that passes is 1 less
- 6:35day to respond to what you are already seeing.
- 6:39One less day to engage with what the season is revealing. 1 less
- 6:45day to realign what you already sense may be happening.
- 6:52Time isn't running out, but the process is already running, and
- 6:57presence your presence in the season with what's actually
- 7:02happening is the only thing that shapes what comes out the other
- 7:07side. I've been on a lot of roller
- 7:11coasters in my life from when I was a kid to now.
- 7:16Different rides, different parks, different decades, and
- 7:21every single time the same sequence happens.
- 7:26The waiting in line, the anticipation building with every
- 7:30step forward, The sitting down, pulling the harness over your
- 7:34shoulders and the click that click.
- 7:40In that moment, something shifts.
- 7:43The decision is already behind you.
- 7:45You can't go back, you can't stop it.
- 7:49The only question remains is how are you going to be on the ride?
- 7:54Then there's a slow clicking pull up the first hill and your
- 7:59stomach is in knots even before the drop happens.
- 8:03Everything you were thinking about while waiting in line is
- 8:07completely gone. You are in it.
- 8:12And here's what I've noticed every single time.
- 8:15Standing on the other side. I spent too much time wishing I
- 8:20was somewhere else back at the beginning.
- 8:23Already at the end anywhere but in the middle of it.
- 8:29And then it's over too soon and I'm standing there thinking, why
- 8:34didn't I just let myself be in that?
- 8:39That feeling, the locked harness already in motion.
- 8:43No going back. That's just not a roller coaster
- 8:47feeling. That's a still feeling.
- 8:51The still doesn't ask the whiskey if it's ready.
- 8:55The heat is applied and the process begins.
- 8:58And if you're honest, you can feel that somewhere in your
- 9:02leadership right now, something is already in motion.
- 9:08The only question is whether you're present for it or still
- 9:12wishing you were somewhere else. If any of this is feeling a
- 9:17little familiar, here's what I'd like you to name or recognize. 3
- 9:22questions, one for each stage of the distillation process that
- 9:26we've been talking about. The first is a fermentation
- 9:31question. What's already set in motion,
- 9:36not what you're planning to start, What's already
- 9:39transforming in your leadership, your team, your organization,
- 9:44whether you've named it or not. Fermentation doesn't broadcast
- 9:49that it's happening, but it is happening.
- 9:53What's becoming something different underneath the
- 9:56surface? The second question is a
- 10:00distillation question. What's being separated right
- 10:05now? What doesn't fit the way it used
- 10:08to? What's starting to feel
- 10:11misaligned? A role, a relationship, a
- 10:15direction, a version of yourself you've been carrying past its
- 10:20season. And look around you too.
- 10:23What's being separated in the people you lead, in the
- 10:27organization you're responsible for?
- 10:30The still is running in more than one place at once.
- 10:36The third question is an aging question.
- 10:41What is the season shaping over time?
- 10:45Because distillation isn't the end.
- 10:48What forms in you during the season?
- 10:50The patience, the clarity, the conviction.
- 10:54It doesn't disappear when the season ends.
- 10:58It becomes a part of what you carry forward into the next
- 11:02season. The barrel is doing something
- 11:06even when nothing appears to be happening.
- 11:10The season you're in is already working on you.
- 11:14The question is whether you're working with it or waiting for
- 11:18it to end so the real work can begin.
- 11:24I want to be honest about something because this episode
- 11:27could be heard as pressure, and that's not what this is.
- 11:32This is not a call to force you to make a decision.
- 11:36It's not about manufacturing urgency or resolving something
- 11:40that isn't ready to be resolved. It's about presence.
- 11:46The distiller doesn't rush the still, but the distiller does
- 11:50stay present in the process, paying attention, noticing what
- 11:55the process is revealing, making adjustments when adjustments are
- 12:00needed, and making the cut on the cut is ready to be made.
- 12:05That's the posture for them and for us.
- 12:12What would it look like to stop waiting for clarity to arrive
- 12:15from somewhere outside the season?
- 12:18Instead, begin to engage with what the season is already
- 12:22producing. Not forcing anything, but being
- 12:27present to where the separation is already happening.
- 12:32Not manufacturing transition, but acknowledging the one that's
- 12:36already under way in your leadership, in your
- 12:40organization, and in the people around you.
- 12:45Just being present enough to notice what the still is
- 12:49revealing in you. Because the still doesn't lie,
- 12:54and neither does the season you're in.
- 13:00If you've ever gone to a whiskey tasting, you know the guide
- 13:03usually pauses at some point and asks what are you noticing?
- 13:09Not what you're supposed to notice, but what's actually
- 13:12landing for you right now. That's what these are.
- 13:18I've been taking notes through this conversation, and here are
- 13:21three things I keep coming back to.
- 13:24Three things I don't want you to drive away from without sitting
- 13:28with the first. The waiting isn't neutral.
- 13:35I think somewhere along the line we've told ourselves that
- 13:38holding back is the safe move, that waiting For more
- 13:42information or better timing clear conditions is somehow a
- 13:47responsible choice. But a non decision is still a
- 13:51decision. And in a still, the absence of
- 13:55presence shapes what comes out at the other side just as much
- 13:59as anything else does. The process doesn't pause, it
- 14:05just continues without you being there in the room the second
- 14:11you're not the only still running.
- 14:15This one is easy to miss when we're focused on our own
- 14:18formation, But the people you lead, the organization you're
- 14:22responsible for, well, they're in motion too.
- 14:27Your presence in this season isn't just about what gets
- 14:30shaped in you, it's about what gets shaped around you.
- 14:35And those two things are connected in ways that matter.
- 14:41And the third? Be present and enjoy the ride.
- 14:46I know that sounds simple, but remember the roller coaster you
- 14:51chose to get on the harness is locked and the process is
- 14:56already running. You don't need certainty to be
- 15:00present. You just need to stop wishing
- 15:02you were somewhere else in the ride and let yourself actually
- 15:06be in it. That's not a small thing for a
- 15:11lot of leaders, that's the whole thing.
- 15:16There's more to sit with on the website.
- 15:18A full tasting notes guide for this episode, free to download
- 15:23or read at craftedclarity.net. It's designed to help you do
- 15:29something specific with what you've just heard.
- 15:31And because that's actually something we don't talk about
- 15:34enough, these notes aren't a summary to read once and file
- 15:39away. They're a tool for sitting with
- 15:43with what the episode surfaced, the tension you felt at a
- 15:47certain moment, or the question that didn't let you go, the
- 15:53thing you wanted to dismiss but couldn't.
- 15:57That's the distillation happening in you right now and
- 16:01the tasting notes are designed to help you stay in that long
- 16:04enough for something real to form.
- 16:07So don't rush past what just landed.
- 16:10Sit with it. Let it do its work.
- 16:15We started today with a with a word.
- 16:19A lot of leaders are living in waiting.
- 16:25And what I hope you're leaving with is simpler than anything
- 16:28that we've talked about today. You're already in the still, the
- 16:33season is moving, the process is running, and the only question
- 16:38that was ever really on the table was whether you're going
- 16:41to be present in it. Not certain, not finished, just
- 16:47present. The harness is locked, my
- 16:50friend. Be in the ride and remember,
- 16:56clarity isn't found, it's crafted.
- 17:01Thanks for listening to Crafted Clarity.
- 17:03If you're a leader wrestling with the tension between success
- 17:06and significance, or if you're trying to align your work with a
- 17:09deeper calling, I'd love to connect with you.
- 17:12If your organization is facing questions about strategy,
- 17:15whether it's alignment, ROI, or building confidence in your
- 17:19team. This is the work we do every day
- 17:21at ibrand. And if you walk this journey
- 17:24yourself, or maybe you're right in the middle of it, I'd love to
- 17:27hear your story and maybe even shared here on the podcast.
