Transcript
- 0:06Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Noreen Condon on a
- 0:09Wednesday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:12Network. Trent Condon and Ken Miller for
- 0:14the next couple of hours to talk sports with you.
- 0:17Appreciate you starting your afternoon with us on the
- 0:21flagship one O 6.3 KX&O and on the network variety of stations
- 0:26throughout the state of Iowa. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:30program and old friends going to kick things off, Nicholson, he
- 0:33now covers Wisconsin. He's part of 24 over 7 sports.
- 0:36We'll talk to Nick. We'll catch up with Nick and
- 0:38we'll ask me about the football game.
- 0:40Obviously Wisconsin hosting the Hawkeyes.
- 0:43That is a 6:00 kick. We'll talk to Nick Olson coming
- 0:47up at 12:25. And then the voice of the Kansas
- 0:50City Chiefs, Mitch Holtis his regular spot, Papa John's
- 0:54throughout the state of Iowa. Sponsor Mitch's local are hit
- 0:57with us every Wednesday with the exception of the bye week 1245
- 1:02on Wednesdays. Off to Chicago to kick off hour
- 1:05number two, 2-3 hours in advance of game #3 Brewers and Cubs,
- 1:09Priester versus Tyone. We'll do some Cubs, obviously
- 1:13with the capper and some Bears as well.
- 1:16Recap his Eagles trip. Not the Philadelphia Eagles, the
- 1:19Eagles, as he saw those, the band at the sphere last week.
- 1:23So I'm kind of anxious to hear how that went and then what are
- 1:27we going to do at one third over?
- 1:28Dane Mazatani, He's back from from the UK.
- 1:31Of course, he was over there covering the Vikings as they
- 1:34beat the Browns. The Vikings on a bye week.
- 1:37Dane mazatanitwincities.com, Saint Paul Pioneer Press.
- 1:40He will join us at 1:30. Where are the Vikings at as they
- 1:43are in the midst of their bye. I guess more importantly, who's
- 1:45going to be under center when the team resumes play next week?
- 1:49And then Trent will make his picks.
- 1:50Circus sports sponsor those the new circus sports app.
- 1:53I circus sports Iowa app is live.
- 1:56If you are an existing customer, you might know already.
- 1:59If you try to log on last night, you got to download it again, go
- 2:03through all the steps again, but it'd be worth the while.
- 2:05Is there a whole bunch more bells and whistles?
- 2:07You've been asking for it. They've been working on it.
- 2:10It is ready to go and circus sports app Iowa download the app
- 2:14now. They sponsor Trent's plays of
- 2:16the day. So four games of baseball today.
- 2:19Buckle up. This is going to be a dinger.
- 2:21I think it's going to be great. Looking forward to this one.
- 2:23We got elimination games and all of them.
- 2:26Chances of bounce back for your Blue Jays after the bats came
- 2:29alive for the Yankees in a big time way and they've been
- 2:31swinging it in a big level. Definitely advantage in the
- 2:35starting spot. Well, it's Louis Varland who
- 2:37gave up the home. You know what?
- 2:38Here's the crazy part, right? That was hell of a pitch.
- 2:40It was up and in 100 miles an hour and maybe the best hitter
- 2:44in the game today. I mean, Aaron Judge just was
- 2:47able to muscle that baseball out of the ballpark.
- 2:49Well, if not, didn't leave the ballpark, hit the foul slash
- 2:52fair pole and Kareem back into the playing field.
- 2:55But my God, did he get all of that.
- 2:57But it was a hell of a pitch. It really was.
- 2:58And at that time he just felt like opening your app and
- 3:01betting and live betting. Here come the Yankees and they
- 3:03won nine to six. We'll see where it goes.
- 3:05It's not like the Jays rolled over.
- 3:07I mean, they they put up a six spot on the board.
- 3:09But I agree with you wholeheartedly because last time
- 3:11we saw Schlitter. Oh, yo-yo, yo-yo.
- 3:13He was unbelievable. The Cubs will send Tyon against
- 3:17Priester. He's had an unbelievable year.
- 3:20I do, and I'm anxious to hear your take on this because we
- 3:22both like Bryce Miller, but he hasn't been great.
- 3:25Casey Mize, on the other hand, has been OK.
- 3:28I, I, I give Detroit a puncher's chance.
- 3:31I don't give the Phillies much a chance in the night cab because
- 3:34Nola has been gone for a while. Yamamoto has been really good as
- 3:38of late. I'd like to hear your thoughts.
- 3:42I'm with you, Nola. He has been.
- 3:44You've been feeding him this year.
- 3:46He has been a bank for you. He's been just charging it up
- 3:48time in and time out. Yeah, I am with you.
- 3:50I think this is Dodgers. I don't want to say home free.
- 3:53Well, the price definitely tells you what it is.
- 3:54They're -180 them. Yeah.
- 3:57Are two of the biggest prices on the board here today with the
- 4:00Cubs. We'll see what they do with the
- 4:01lineup. But Priester, you said it.
- 4:04The guy is just outstanding. They find another one, right?
- 4:06And just these young pitchers come through ready to go.
- 4:10He's been outstanding. It feels like a lot of teams may
- 4:12be up against it here today. Yeah, I think so.
- 4:15We'll we'll see where it goes. But I give Detroit a chance to
- 4:19extend to Friday. I think the Cubs are up against
- 4:22it. I think the there will be a game
- 4:24back in Toronto Game 5 and I I don't think that the National
- 4:28League nightcap goes on. We'll see where this goes.
- 4:31So we'd get no baseball tomorrow if both the Dodgers win and the
- 4:36Brewers win? Really.
- 4:38Yeah. Because the American League's
- 4:40off till Friday. Off till.
- 4:41Friday, right? So the Dodgers would play and
- 4:44the Cubs would play well, I mean, fingers crossed.
- 4:47Have they set times for those yet?
- 4:49No. They haven't, OK, They're
- 4:51waiting obviously to see who advances tomorrow and and who
- 4:55has it and it's going up against Eagles, Giants this Thursday
- 4:59Night Football. Speaking of that, Speaking of
- 5:01Thursday Night Football, well, football returns tonight.
- 5:05We have football. I saw this.
- 5:07Did you see the nugget that came out?
- 5:08What's that? That there is now a college or
- 5:11an NFL game for the next 49 straight days?
- 5:16Yes, that we'll get to Thanksgiving weekend or Monday
- 5:19night of Thanksgiving, the Monday night following
- 5:22Thanksgiving and we'll have football on every net.
- 5:25Now, is there a Wednesday game? I don't think there is.
- 5:27So that must be when the the streak comes to an end because
- 5:29there's not a game usually Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
- 5:33So that's when it would stop and then obviously start again on
- 5:35Thursday. And yeah, pretty special time
- 5:38action. It's it's kind of, it's good and
- 5:40it's bad. I mean it's good that if you
- 5:42love football, it's bad that you know that sadly we're at the
- 5:45midway point, right, with all of this football.
- 5:47But it is what it is. Seasons come and seasons go and
- 5:51it's been really good so far in both in both camps.
- 5:54Does Luke Fickle have to win this game?
- 5:55And I'm going to ask this to Nick Olson if if Iowa goes in
- 5:59and and picks them off and what have they been doing after all
- 6:02of their workouts? They do 42 push ups. 42 push ups
- 6:05because mandatory Iowa laid a 42 spot on him a year.
- 6:08Ago So obviously this game has been circled when this when the
- 6:11calendar came out, the schedule came out.
- 6:13I'm not sure if there's anything in the in the locker room or not
- 6:16countdown to the Iowa game. But it seems like this is this
- 6:19is one of those games that they've identified, right?
- 6:21If it doesn't go their way, what happens?
- 6:23Do they get ahead of the posse? I don't.
- 6:25And because what's he owed? About 30 million that I read 25
- 6:29to. 30 I've seen all kinds of estimates out there.
- 6:31Yeah, there's, I mean, there was one that was up to 40 and then
- 6:34yeah, it was lower than that. But it's a lot of money.
- 6:37Yeah. It's a ton of money and we've
- 6:40seen plenty of teams do this before.
- 6:42What's still in front of them. I mean this is their easiest
- 6:44game remaining on their schedule.
- 6:46Really. After this, they got Ohio State
- 6:49coming in, they go to Oregon. Jesus, here comes Washington.
- 6:53Oh boy. They go to Indiana, they got a
- 6:56top 15 Illinois team, and then they play for the Axe.
- 6:59And now and where is that game? In Minnesota, Oh boy.
- 7:03It's it's when you put it like that that I was their easiest
- 7:06game left on the schedule. Yeah, it's crazy.
- 7:09So it's definitely one that's circled and circle the wagons
- 7:12type of Wisconsin can stop the run and we get to Iowa who's
- 7:19throwing the ball. It's.
- 7:22Give me your take away from yesterday and Kirk.
- 7:25I I think he's taking a page out of Matt Campbell's book.
- 7:29He's been a little sneaky. He's.
- 7:31But we've known Kurt for 27 years.
- 7:33Sure, but I think Campbell set the bar even higher when it
- 7:36comes to those things. I think, I mean think it's Hank
- 7:38Brown. I think it's Hank Brown.
- 7:40You do, I do. I thought that until 145
- 7:42yesterday. And then you came away thinking
- 7:44it is Gronowski. That there was something that
- 7:47happened in practice, seeing him just listening to Kirk, because
- 7:52yes, Kirk can be coy, Yep. But he is not somebody that
- 7:56lies. He is not somebody that he will,
- 7:59yes, not give you all the information, but he's not going
- 8:02to lie to you. And just hearing him talk about
- 8:05Gornowski, I think he was surprised of how close to a
- 8:09return he was at practice on Tuesday.
- 8:11I hope you're 1000% right. I don't like, I like Hank Brown
- 8:15next year, like Mark Gronowski this year.
- 8:18But Mark Gronowski at 100%. Well, that's just.
- 8:21It a limited Mark Gronowski that whose legs are a weapon.
- 8:26Without that, that's true. Would you rather have pocket
- 8:30passer Mark Gronowski or the full package of Hank Brown?
- 8:34The answer might be closer than you think.
- 8:36Well, and and it might be because I think last, the last
- 8:40time we saw Hank Brown was kind of unfair, you know, getting
- 8:42thrown in the way he did and not having the preparation and all
- 8:46the snaps with the ones, although I'm not sure he's
- 8:47getting those now because it with Klinsky showing up at the
- 8:50depth chart. I don't know how they're
- 8:51splitting the reps leading up to this game, and we won't give
- 8:57that. See, I don't know if the Big 10
- 9:00will ever get to where the Big 12 is at or I don't know if the
- 9:03Big 12 will continue with their Wednesday, Thursday, Friday,
- 9:06Saturday availability reports that we get.
- 9:08I think it's more likely that the Big 12 decides, you know
- 9:11what, I think the Big 10's got it right.
- 9:12We're just going to do it 90 minutes before the game.
- 9:14But this is one of those those instances where I would love to
- 9:18know, I would love the Big 10 to follow suit when it comes to
- 9:21this. So would you put it 60407030
- 9:25Kornowski? I learn more Kornowski that he's
- 9:28going to 8020. Probably not that high, but
- 9:31yeah, I think you're 6040 is fair.
- 9:33Short leash though, if indeed he can't run and he does look like
- 9:36he's hobbling around. Yeah, definitely.
- 9:38I the way that I read into it is further along now we have to see
- 9:42because also reading between the lines as you have to do with
- 9:46Kirk, I think this was probably the most that he did actually on
- 9:49the football field as opposed to just rehabbing as he did all
- 9:52week long. Kirk mentioned that, but how
- 9:55does he wake up today? Now?
- 9:56How did practice go now today after maybe pushing it for the
- 9:59first time, doing some things that opened up the coaches that
- 10:02hey, maybe he can go now. How does he feel a day after
- 10:06that? I think it's still incredibly
- 10:07touch and go, but certainly I mean I had it 8020 that it was
- 10:11going to be Hank Brown as opposed to today where I think
- 10:14it's flipped and I think Gronowski if I had a betting
- 10:17betting board right now, Gronowski be the betting
- 10:19favorite to get this started more.
- 10:21Likely to start for the respective school on Saturday,
- 10:24Gronowski or John Metir with Oklahoma.
- 10:27I think there's no way in hell he's playing.
- 10:29Hand surgery on a 17 days ago. Couple it with how this
- 10:35information came out and we hear it a lot.
- 10:39Wants to play when a national reporter reports something like
- 10:43all the all the beat guys got beat again.
- 10:46Sometimes there's a reason for that if Mateer was really close
- 10:50to being back. Wasn't the report he wants to
- 10:53play? Wants to play, of course.
- 10:55He wants to play. He's sexist.
- 10:57Coupled with the way the report came out this early in the week,
- 11:02this is not. No, he's not playing.
- 11:04Oklahoma wanted this out. Oklahoma wanted Texas to have to
- 11:08prepare for both quarterbacks. That's how I read into this.
- 11:12Speaking of Oklahoma, so koi flip game this weekend material,
- 11:16no material. It's a coin flip game.
- 11:17Texas has their I. Kind of give Oklahoma a light, a
- 11:20slight edge, Trent. Well, and we also know in this
- 11:22game what you think is going to happen the opposite usually
- 11:24that's true. I mean that's that's been this
- 11:26series for the most part of the best last 30 years.
- 11:29Is it just gone the opposite way?
- 11:31But also Oklahoma right now is basically a pick em to make the
- 11:34College Football Playoff to make the College Football Playoff.
- 11:37Oklahoma with Metir which we have.
- 11:39No, even if they beat Texas this week, then they go to South
- 11:43Carolina who's struggling? It's still a roadie.
- 11:44Yep, they have Ole Miss coming in.
- 11:46They're unbeaten. They go to Tennessee, then they
- 11:49go to Alabama. Oh God, they still have
- 11:51Missouri. Who?
- 11:51Who? Knows they're unbeaten as of
- 11:53today. And they wrap up against LSU.
- 11:55You think Oklahoma's getting the College Football Playoff?
- 12:00And even are they playing for a big for an SEC Championship?
- 12:03No, that that team has at least three losses.
- 12:05But find a team that has an easy path in the SEC Texas, I
- 12:09challenge you. Texas, it's the Longhorns.
- 12:13I find 2. Then give me Texas.
- 12:15I don't know Texas is off the top of my head.
- 12:17Oh, you. OK.
- 12:19Kentucky. No Mississippi State.
- 12:21Better, but they'll win. Home for Vandy?
- 12:25Yeah, Now they go to Georgia. OK.
- 12:27They get Arkansas. That's a win.
- 12:29And then A. And M.
- 12:31And that's for an SEC schedule. That's as easy as it gets.
- 12:35Look at Alabama. Yeah, that's they already have a
- 12:38loss on their resume too. But not in conference.
- 12:40Are we going to get to back to what we had at the end of last
- 12:44season, arguing about 9 and three teams?
- 12:46Yes. Who should be yes out of those
- 12:489? Until we expand to 16 and then
- 12:50then food there might change again.
- 12:52Here's one for you. If Texas Tech gets through the
- 12:56regular season unbeaten, 12 and 12, and no, Yep, they get beat
- 13:00by, I don't care who. They get beat by somebody.
- 13:02Somebody beats them in Arlington.
- 13:04In a relatively close game. Close game 2723.
- 13:07That sounds good. That sounds good. 2721 anything
- 13:11like that? Texas Tech one of the 12.
- 13:14Does that mean the Big 12 gets 2?
- 13:16Is that the best path to two teams?
- 13:19I think it's the only path. I think it's just.
- 13:20Two, I think it's the only path. Maybe there is a slim 211 and
- 13:24one teams collide. Great game overtime.
- 13:27May think you got to be 12 and only get B Trent because it
- 13:30looks as though. Are there 2 teams, relative
- 13:33teams in the? Can we say the same thing in the
- 13:35ACC? But what if it comes down to a
- 13:3810 and 2 Notre Dame as opposed to Texas?
- 13:41Tech, the second team, the. Or even to the second team,
- 13:45probably Notre Dame. Got that extra data point
- 13:47though, Does that matter? But it's an L on that data point
- 13:51and Notre Dame had won ten consecutive games in that.
- 13:54Look, it's not in a vacuum and that's why these scenarios are
- 13:56so difficult is because we don't know how this is going to play
- 13:59out. And you kind of look through
- 14:00past history, if we would have had a 12 team playoff, it's very
- 14:04rare that actually, like we had a year ago, that there's going
- 14:07to be a bunch of nine and three teams vying for that final spot.
- 14:10That was a rarity. Now with major conferences,
- 14:12bigger conferences, that's also a part that you have to put in
- 14:15it because these teams are playing each other a whole lot
- 14:17more. I think we're going to get to a
- 14:20point at the end of the season where it's going to be a little
- 14:23bit more cut and dry. There'll be arguments, no doubt,
- 14:25but it's not going to be like it was a season ago.
- 14:28Trying to figure out those nine and three teams.
- 14:30South Carolina, Alabama, of course, Clemson wins to get in.
- 14:34What did that do when SMU survived and hung on to that
- 14:36final bit out of the ACC? So here's one for you.
- 14:38Miami's unbeaten Georgia Tech's only losses to Georgia on the
- 14:43final week of the regular season.
- 14:44A non conference game they play for the ACC championship.
- 14:49Miami and Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech wins, same as the
- 14:53Big 12. Oh yeah, both those teams.
- 14:56So two teams from the ACC and two teams from the Big 12.
- 15:00Now we're getting into sticky situation, yeah.
- 15:02Gotta put a group of five team in.
- 15:05Memphis. It might, maybe.
- 15:06I mean, it doesn't matter. South Florida, somebody at this
- 15:08point. Yeah.
- 15:09You know what they don't. North Texas and South Florida
- 15:12play on Friday. Night they do.
- 15:13Good God, that's a great game. Yeah, no, it really is really
- 15:17is. I love this time of year, hate
- 15:18this time of year, love it that we're talking about it, hate the
- 15:21fact that we're soon going to not be talking about it.
- 15:23But anyways, Nick Olson is coming up.
- 15:27He covers Wisconsin. Look forward to talking to Nick.
- 15:29Obviously, we'll get into a Mitch Holtis with the Chiefs,
- 15:33where they're at right now as they fall on Monday night to
- 15:37Jacksonville. What does what, where do they
- 15:40go? I'm sure they'll be fine.
- 15:42But boy oh boy, does it get much better in Sunday Night Football.
- 15:46No. Not in Detroit.
- 15:47At Kansas City. Little desperation for KC.
- 15:51Yeah, I mean, in Detroit's looking to.
- 15:53I mean, Detroit's Detroit. They're really good.
- 15:56Let's get to Mike in Waterloo. I do want to spend a few minutes
- 15:59on TJ's press conference today. It's media day for the men's
- 16:03basketball boy. He took a couple of shots at
- 16:05Heise. Did you, did you see that he lit
- 16:07Heisey up a little bit, let everybody know that he was not
- 16:10happy the way night Heisey went through the summer months.
- 16:12But he's back at it now and think he was named a captain.
- 16:14So obviously sounds like TJ and the staff got Heisey's
- 16:18attention. Hello, Mike, How are you?
- 16:21Oh well, we got beat our one game so far.
- 16:24But you know what? I'm kind of worried about
- 16:26Rocco's health. You know, he's taken some
- 16:28headshots the last two weeks. You know, and I think they're
- 16:32trying to take him out of the game, but if Mansky gets in, let
- 16:36him throw the ball. I tell you, I've seen people
- 16:38watch him practice when he was at Algona.
- 16:41He can roll right and left and he throws 50 yards on a diamond.
- 16:46You just can't. You got to take the training
- 16:48wheels off of him because we got to win these games because like
- 16:52I said, we're supposed to go 11 and 1, and I got that.
- 16:55I thought we'd get beat by Colorado, but what do you guys
- 16:58think? You got to let Mansky be Mansky.
- 17:02Yeah. I mean, if he's going to be the
- 17:03guy. And I agree with you, Rocco's
- 17:04take. He's a tough Sobi.
- 17:06Love that about Rocco back, Mike.
- 17:08We got to move on, brother. Good to hear from you.
- 17:09Thank you, buddy. Yep.
- 17:10Good to good to talk to you. Let's get Jeff in here, then
- 17:13we'll get a break. Hi, Jeff.
- 17:14What's on your mind? Nothing much, quick.
- 17:17I just want to say something about the Chiefs.
- 17:18You know, I hear people on these airwaves talk about how the
- 17:21Chiefs were back this and that. Then we talk about scheduling
- 17:25and who people have beat, boys. They beat the lonely Giants with
- 17:30Russell Wilson, and they'd be a Ravens team that is one in four
- 17:33and one of the worst defenses in the league.
- 17:35So I don't know how I don't know with a straight face.
- 17:38Like, I understand. I watched the game against Jax.
- 17:40Well, yeah, they should have won.
- 17:41Well, last year they would have won that game.
- 17:43That's a tell. They won a whole bunch of close
- 17:45games last year. They did.
- 17:47They did. So that's it.
- 17:48That's a tell. Tell something.
- 17:49You got a guy that you paid that just gave up on a play.
- 17:51Who's the best team in the West? You've probably got to say
- 17:57Denver right now. I say Denver right now.
- 18:00Now who knows what it's going to be?
- 18:02You know, could Kansas City back door and win the division?
- 18:05Yeah, they probably could because they won, I don't know,
- 18:0710-11 in a row. But if you ask me who's the best
- 18:10team right now in October, I got to say Denver.
- 18:13Last night. What do you want in January?
- 18:15Watch. Give Me the Chiefs.
- 18:16Denver, you're asking me who I want?
- 18:18Yes. Yes, until they're in Yes, I
- 18:21totally agree last night I'm and I'm not a big baseball guy.
- 18:23I'm sitting down, my girlfriend's watching the the
- 18:26Yankee game with me and she's like, man, you know who?
- 18:29How do you compare, you know, a judge to like a Derek Jeter?
- 18:34And it was a hard question and I'm kind of thinking about it
- 18:36and I just want to throw this out here.
- 18:38You know Jeter's at all time great, but when he came into the
- 18:41league, yeah, Posada maybe the second best catcher in Yankee
- 18:45history beside. Yogi Yale and he Munson Munson
- 18:49in the list. But yeah, absolutely.
- 18:51Yeah. And then he possibly had maybe
- 18:52the best closer of all time. All three of them came up
- 18:55together. I don't even want to go and name
- 18:58all the starting pitching that Jeep had around him.
- 19:01I can name Aunt Andy Pennant, Roger Clemens, David Cohen,
- 19:05David Wells. I could go.
- 19:07On. I think he was and so you got
- 19:12you got Judge and I understand and people with these weak takes
- 19:16about how bad of a batting average he has during the during
- 19:20the playoffs and how the guy doesn't step up for the post
- 19:22season that play that game last night, that play now he's gotten
- 19:26700 in this series. But that home run he hit was so
- 19:29electric. And that's what's great about
- 19:31baseball that a series can get turned a whole post season to
- 19:35get turned on one player of the bat and Judge, it's crazy.
- 19:39I don't care if they lose or not, but Judge is going to go
- 19:42down as one of the all time great Yankees regardless of what
- 19:45he does in the post season. I don't care what his stats are
- 19:48in the regular season. He is one of the all time
- 19:51Yankees. He's the captain.
- 19:52You guys have a good day. Thank you.
- 19:54Good to hear from you, Jeff, that, that that was
- 19:57unbelievable. Again, it was a great pitch it.
- 19:59Was a great pitch. How you even get a barrel on
- 20:01that thing? It's hard to believe.
- 20:03All right, take your time out. We'll come back.
- 20:05Nick Olson will join us. He covers Wisconsin, of course.
- 20:08He covered Iowa State for what, a handful of years when he he
- 20:11was here? But back to his alma mater.
- 20:14So we'll get to Nick Olson. Right now, though, let's do a
- 20:16keyword right, Give you a chance to win $1000.
- 20:19Head to kxando.com. The keyword this hour is grand
- 20:22grand@kxando.com. Your chance to win a grand
- 20:24grand@kxando.com. Miller and Condon on a
- 20:28Wednesday. Ocean next.
- 20:30Holtis still to come This hour, it's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 20:33Network coming up on 1230. Welcome back, Miller and Condon.
- 20:37Iowa Sports Radio Network. Mitch Holtz is the voice of the
- 20:41Kansas City Chiefs. Still to come this hour,
- 20:43Wisconsin and Iowa. They collide in Madison.
- 20:47Camp Randall, 6:00, FS one for the TV radio down the hall from
- 20:51U.S. news Radio 1040, WHO? Well, used to be one of us for a
- 20:56while is living in the state of Iowa.
- 20:58Nick Olson now back in Madison covering the Badgers.
- 21:01It's Iowa and Wisconsin. Whenever we get an opportunity
- 21:05to talk to Nick, we do and away we go.
- 21:07Good to talk to you, old friend. How you been?
- 21:10Man, it's so good to hear your guys voices.
- 21:12I I always look forward to to these opportunities and we'll
- 21:15certainly have some more with the buzz around basketball.
- 21:18This year as well, Absolutely. Yeah.
- 21:19The lot of buzz around Iowa and Wisconsin seemingly always is.
- 21:22So, Nick, I was looking at the Wisconsin schedule and, and I
- 21:25get it, the big tennis changed, but Iowa and Wisconsin only have
- 21:29three common opponents, which is kind of hard to believe.
- 21:32You know, these two schools as close as they are to each other
- 21:35and only three common opponents. So you've seen Maryland and
- 21:38Michigan in conference play Course, Alabama early in the
- 21:41year. When when you look at this
- 21:43Badger, when this Badger squad, what what's the biggest issue
- 21:47facing them right now? Do you think Nick, if you could
- 21:50limit it to 1? Yeah, Ken, you know, it is a
- 21:53really interesting point about the schedule, by the way.
- 21:56But but with the Badgers, I think it's actually, you know, I
- 22:00say it tongue in cheek, similar to what what I was kind of
- 22:03struggled with at times and what Trent and I were just talking
- 22:06about before. I think it's simply sworn the
- 22:08football and consistently having the offense be able to kind of
- 22:13have long sustained drives or explosive plays.
- 22:17I think that obviously a part of that has been this horrible QB
- 22:21luck in terms of injury. They just, they've had a real
- 22:24hard time, you know, having these starting quarterbacks stay
- 22:27healthy, which is unfortunate, fortunate for them as well As
- 22:30for the offense. The Badgers recently made a
- 22:33change. So I was up there in Ann Arbor
- 22:35and they started a new quarterback, which I'm sure
- 22:37we'll get into Hunter Simmons. And early on, I would say that
- 22:40first, certainly the first couple drives, maybe most of the
- 22:43first half, they showed some better signs.
- 22:46The offensive line looked good against a good Michigan front.
- 22:49They were running the football. They scored a quick touchdown
- 22:52and had the early lead. But just kind of that
- 22:54consistency, I think has left an improved defense on the field
- 22:59for a long time. And, you know, obviously these
- 23:01guys are humans and the more that they're out there that the
- 23:04more fatigue they get. So I, I just think it's been a
- 23:06little bit tougher than on the defense all told, Ken.
- 23:10Take us into that quarterback situation.
- 23:12Billy Edwards, the anticipated starters been banged up, went in
- 23:15for a drive and didn't and didn't look like he was
- 23:19certainly 100% Hunter Simmons, the SIU transfer out there as
- 23:22well. What do you expect to see on
- 23:24Saturday against the Hawks? Yeah, Translate.
- 23:27It's been a really interesting group like you.
- 23:29Like you kind of said, all these guys are new to the program this
- 23:32year. Edwards, I really feel for him.
- 23:35I mean he done everything right. Just kind of can't seem to shake
- 23:39this, you know, still working towards this or Danny O'Neill
- 23:42for a while, who I think came onto the scene and did really,
- 23:45really well, especially against Middle Tennessee.
- 23:47He actually set some record numbers for a first time Badger
- 23:51starter in his first game. He impresses with his mobility,
- 23:55but then really kind of had a hard time against Maryland and
- 23:59Hunter Simmons. How I would describe the guys,
- 24:01especially to you know, maybe a group that you obviously can't
- 24:04watch every drive right. You're busy with other teams
- 24:06too. So I'd say he's got a higher
- 24:09floor, if that makes sense. He's been around.
- 24:11He's like 2223 years old grad transfer type of guy.
- 24:15You know, he's got a good arm, decent size.
- 24:18I think he's got a pretty good accurate ball and can read
- 24:22things quickly, just maybe isn't as mobile.
- 24:24He did have an interception against Michigan, but there's a
- 24:27pretty rough pass interference on that.
- 24:29So I think out of O'Neill and Simmons, Simmons seems to be
- 24:33trending well to be that next guy.
- 24:35Again, you got to monitor Edwards, but we haven't heard
- 24:37anything at least late that would kind of imply he will be
- 24:40back and starting on Saturday. Nick the Maryland game and I get
- 24:45it. It's Maryland and Wisconsin
- 24:47should beat Maryland. Everybody should beat Maryland.
- 24:49Maryland. They don't people don't realize
- 24:51that you know they're a decent program.
- 24:53I like the quarterback Washington, right?
- 24:55He's a he's a good player. But my point being and you were
- 25:00there. I did not see very much of the
- 25:02game, if at all. I can't remember what I was
- 25:04watching, but regardless, the fire fickle chance apparently
- 25:08were being we were echoing throughout the stadium.
- 25:11You know how message boards are, you know, Twitter or is the fan
- 25:14base when the team gets beat, that's what they do, right?
- 25:17That's where they take out their anxiety.
- 25:20So is there anything to this? If if Iowa goes in and they've
- 25:23been doing the 42 push ups and seemingly this game's been
- 25:26circled on the schedule, if I will beat them.
- 25:29And I think Fickle's got somewhere between 25 and 30
- 25:32million in a bio. Is that is that real?
- 25:35I mean, is there a chance that the fickle might not make this
- 25:38season or is that just message board fodder?
- 25:42Yeah, Ken, it's, it's a good question my friend.
- 25:44I will say that, you know, like you said, it kind of just it
- 25:48started randomly kind of just in one section.
- 25:51And, and I do think it was just mostly kind of those similar
- 25:54types of people and maybe some frustrated message aboard folks
- 25:57or even kind of some of the students at one point it was
- 26:00directed from look, I, I don't mean to kind of fully defend,
- 26:05right? It's a little opinion and a
- 26:06little bit about what I believe is the case that obviously
- 26:10things haven't been perfect these last couple of seasons.
- 26:14I will go back to some of that injury luck.
- 26:16I think he's had the worst UV injury luck in the nation in the
- 26:20last couple years and obviously the toughest schedule in the Big
- 26:2310 this year, maybe the country. So I don't believe there should
- 26:26be a move. Now that that said, from what
- 26:29we've kind of, you know, gathered heard the buyout
- 26:31numbers, I would be pretty surprised, Ken, if a move was
- 26:36made regardless of how this game goes.
- 26:39You know, you mentioned the buyout, I mentioned the
- 26:41schedule. There are still some positives
- 26:43if if you're really looking and paying attention in terms of
- 26:46recruiting, having come up some of the young talent coming in.
- 26:50But obviously we we know and understand the importance of
- 26:53winning game. So that that's kind of my long
- 26:56way to answer it. But I will kind of add, as you
- 26:58mentioned, watching the push ups can speaking with Pickle this
- 27:01week, speaking with the players and I'll continue to have more
- 27:04on that this week. This game is vastly, vastly
- 27:08important. Like I said, I've watched some
- 27:10Iowa. I think that they've been a
- 27:11pretty good football team, probably could be 3 plays away
- 27:15from five. And oh, and I know that the
- 27:17Badgers have really struggled. So I think it's going to come
- 27:20down to, you know, can you just out Iowa, Iowa, right, because
- 27:24it's a low points total. But just knowing all of that,
- 27:29these guys know it's a must win. It's as close to a must win in
- 27:33early October as you will ever hear me say.
- 27:35Guys and the players, I would really say that themselves.
- 27:39Nick, what kind of environment do you expect to see?
- 27:42I know this is a fan base very fractured in general.
- 27:45The student section usually shows up late.
- 27:47Who knows if they're even going to get in the building for this
- 27:49one. With a late kickoff at 6:00,
- 27:52what do you anticipate the environments going to be?
- 27:54Doesn't feel like it's going to be a standard Camp Randall
- 27:56environment. Yeah, That is, you know, trend.
- 27:59That's something that fans have been talking about on my message
- 28:02boards a little bit as well this week.
- 28:04So obviously, things were, you know, fractured, I think the
- 28:07good word for it in that last home game against Maryland.
- 28:10But I do think there was at least a feeling of some
- 28:14optimism, excitement in that first half in Ann Arbor.
- 28:18I know that the fans on my site were feeling that way.
- 28:21I think there's been enough space since then, right?
- 28:24It's a sellout. It is a night game you don't see
- 28:27a ton of here as many as think a lot of programs would like.
- 28:31And while I appreciate the the student section joke because you
- 28:34know that those kids will be having fun, you know, since 8:00
- 28:38or 9:00 AM, I'm not saying it'll be, you know, Iowa, I'm sorry,
- 28:42Ohio State 2001 or 2005 when some of the top ranked teams
- 28:46come in. But I am actually still
- 28:48expecting a really good environment simply because these
- 28:52fans like like Hawkeyes, like Cyclones are some of the most
- 28:56passionate in the entire nation. And I just from my
- 29:00understanding, speaking with a lot of recruits, families and
- 29:03friends and fans and families around here, like people are
- 29:06still going to show up as I think they should.
- 29:08It's homecoming. It's a night game.
- 29:11And I think that last year's game left a bad taste in their
- 29:14mouths trying not just for the team, but a lot of these fans,
- 29:18you know, they don't like that being done to them from Iowa
- 29:21either. 42 points and in that fashion.
- 29:23So maybe not your classic state-of-the-art atmosphere, but
- 29:27I'm actually still expecting a really good one, especially from
- 29:318090% of the. Family.
- 29:32Yeah, Awesome. What's the weather forecast,
- 29:35Nick? Are we good as far as no rain or
- 29:38anything like that Saturday, do you know?
- 29:40Yeah, so I definitely have been checking that throughout the
- 29:42week. I think it's for this time of
- 29:44year in Wisconsin going to be pretty good, low to mid 50, a
- 29:47little bit of sun, I think from one to four, two to four and
- 29:50then you'll get kind of that normal, you know, relaxing but
- 29:54brisk all night. I really think I was just saying
- 29:57that, you know, earlier on on my site, this is one that I'm
- 30:00excited to just kind of take in, right.
- 30:02Obviously we'll be writing the stories, but just with a lot of
- 30:05these storylines from some of the tough couple weeks, Iowa's
- 30:08tough losses, bye weeks, the QB situation, It could be some ugly
- 30:13football, it could be a lot of defense and maybe some forcing
- 30:17turnovers. But I really can't wait to watch
- 30:19this one. Guys up and can't.
- 30:20I'm with you last thing, Nicholson joining us, what kind
- 30:25of year basketball wise? I think Iowa and Wisconsin, at
- 30:29least from a betting perspective, they're both about
- 30:3125 to one kind in the middle of the pack 789 range.
- 30:37Is it a single play or a double play against Iowa, Wisconsin?
- 30:40Do you know, Trent? Do you know?
- 30:42I think it's a single. Single this year, yeah.
- 30:45What kind of year, what kind of squads, guard going to have?
- 30:48A good one. You know, guys, I told you I
- 30:50remember we talked last year and we were a little bit ahead of
- 30:52the curve, but in Kanje and how the team was, this team won't be
- 30:57talked about quite as much as you said, 6789.
- 31:01I've got him as at least top five team in the conference.
- 31:04Some of the best star powered John Blackwell named to all big
- 31:07time just like then it starts down there.
- 31:10I think this transfer class is going to impress some people as
- 31:13well as some of these young guys.
- 31:14So I personally have this group, you know, bonafide tournament
- 31:18team, the potential with guard at the helm and how old they are
- 31:22to maybe get to that second weekend guys.
- 31:24Good stuff, Nick Olson. Appreciate it.
- 31:26Nick, give your sight a plug for me, would you?
- 31:29Yeah, thank you so much, Badger 247 and great timing. 50% off
- 31:33promo for any Badger fans down there or anybody that you'll
- 31:36remember some of my work the last day today, guys, always
- 31:40truly a pleasure to hear your voices.
- 31:41Miss you guys. You're a good man, Nick Olson.
- 31:43Thank you, buddy. Good to talk to you.
- 31:44Talk to you in February, Nick Olson on Wisconsin.
- 31:48We'll take a time out. Mitch Holtis joins us next.
- 31:50Voice of the Kansas City Chiefs, Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 31:53Sports Radio Network. Hi, Millory.
- 31:56Condon, welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 31:58Papa John's wrote the state of Iowa course headquartered here
- 32:01in Johnston. They sponsor this weekly segment
- 32:04with the exception of the Chiefs bye week, which is coming up, I
- 32:07think, early November. And what a gauntlet they've got
- 32:10before they get to it. Mitch Holtis is the radio voice
- 32:13of those Kansas City Chiefs and he joins us.
- 32:16Hello Mitch, Trent and Ken, how were you?
- 32:17Boy, that gauntlet starts on Sunday night with the Lions
- 32:21coming actually start on Monday night going to Jacksonville as
- 32:23we know, but Lions Chiefs on Sunday Night Football.
- 32:26My gosh, how big a game is this going to be from a fans
- 32:29perspective? Yikes.
- 32:31Yeah, no, enormous. And there's a lot of Eagles fans
- 32:36that are listening. Probably if the Lions don't have
- 32:38their defensive injuries a year ago, that's who we're playing in
- 32:42Super Bowl 59 because they were steamrolling towards that at 15
- 32:45and two. Now here just just puts this in
- 32:47perspective. All three phases are excellent
- 32:49for them, Ken for the Lions, but they've averaged now roughly 35
- 32:55points a game for two years in a row.
- 32:57If they would hold that up throughout the year, they would
- 33:00be the best scoring back-to-back team since the 194142 Chicago
- 33:05Bears of like Sid Luckman or whatever.
- 33:07So and then defensively, they're not injured except for the
- 33:12corners and they just, they got it all, man.
- 33:14They and their special teams are great.
- 33:16Khalif Raymond, good returner, their place kickers good Jack
- 33:20Jake Bates, the old brick salesman.
- 33:23And then Jack Fox is arguably the best punter in the league.
- 33:26They they have it all and this team is rolling.
- 33:29It's going to be hard to beat him.
- 33:32Back on Monday and just an odd game mentioned after the game,
- 33:36Chiefs out gained by nearly 200 yards, but a pick six.
- 33:40There was a lot that would have, should have, could have, but
- 33:42ultimately didn't happen. Doesn't feel different this
- 33:45year. I mean, these are the games that
- 33:47in the past Kansas City has won and it didn't happen again in
- 33:50this one. Does does something just feel a
- 33:52little bit different this year with this year's squad?
- 33:56I might have told you that after week two against Philly, but I'm
- 34:01not trying to say that now there's too many things that are
- 34:03coming to start to snap together now.
- 34:05It sounds odd saying that after a 3128 loss in a game that the
- 34:09Chiefs yes, should have, could have, would have won and all
- 34:12three phases had moments that was really good and then all
- 34:15three phases had moments where they were really bad.
- 34:18Offensively, you're just South of 500 yards and you put
- 34:21together now success 3 or straight weeks of good offensive
- 34:24ball, but you don't do anything on possession 4 possession 523
- 34:28and outs where which you seized the game there.
- 34:32That's the back-to-back possessions you get by winning
- 34:34the toss and that led to the pick 6.
- 34:36The pick 6 is the most glorious glaring thing defensively.
- 34:42You get 3 sacks on a team that had only given up 3 sacks all
- 34:46year and yet you and you get 2 takeaways and yet you make
- 34:51Trevor Lawrence look like Michael Vick.
- 34:53OK. And then then on special teams,
- 34:56you get the best punning performance by Matt Ariza yet in
- 35:00his career. And yet you have 4 special teams
- 35:03penalties in the second-half and you almost allow a kick return
- 35:07on the return before the kick out of bounds, which actually,
- 35:10in my opinion, led to the kick out of bounds.
- 35:12But still, it was moments of plus, plus and then negative,
- 35:16negative, negative. And in this day and age in the
- 35:18NFL, that's enough to push over the Cliff and lose the game.
- 35:21What? Maybe one of the plays that
- 35:23struck me a well, I I think there was a no look pass that
- 35:26got picked off in return. We've never seen that very
- 35:29seldom. Obviously I want to go back to
- 35:31the touchdown that was originally there was a flag on
- 35:33the the play from the 2 yard line where the officials thought
- 35:37that there was offensive pass interference of pick play and
- 35:40home. Mahomes and a couple of other
- 35:42receivers both put up one finger, ran to the officials.
- 35:45It was the right call. I mean, not the flag that the
- 35:49Chiefs players were absolutely right.
- 35:51They absolutely knew what they were doing by not going past the
- 35:54one yard and the flag was picked up.
- 35:57I thought that was AI mean. Obviously they they all knew in
- 36:01the back of their mind what they couldn't do and that's go past
- 36:03that one yard and they didn't. Well, and it's Juju Smith
- 36:07Schuster and I told, I told you guys use the door hinge, but at
- 36:101 yard or less you can set up and that's where he said it.
- 36:14So every team does it, your Broncos do it.
- 36:17And that's a great win at Philly, by the way.
- 36:19But the point is everybody does it, every team does it, but
- 36:21you've got to do it within that one yard grace zone.
- 36:25And that's what the Chiefs did. So yeah, to know the rule and
- 36:28basically talk the officials out of the call was the right thing
- 36:32to do. That interception on the 99 yard
- 36:34return though is really something you got to give the
- 36:36Jags credit for because we always talk about offensive
- 36:39coaches. I don't care if you're the Des
- 36:40Moines Christian defenders or Iowa State, offensive coaches
- 36:44will save a play, right? I need to play right now and
- 36:47I'll pull it out of my pocket. Well, defensive coaches do that
- 36:50too. They had not run that coverage
- 36:53all year long and Devin Lloyd did a great job.
- 36:56And where there was no look or look, I can't really tell.
- 36:59And even reviewing the video, but the point is the Jaguars did
- 37:02an excellent job of taking all right, here's what he thinks it
- 37:06is. Here's what it's really going to
- 37:08be. And we think he we know where
- 37:10he's going to go with the football.
- 37:11So not I mean, let's give the defense credit there.
- 37:15They had won the bookmark to use at just the right time and they
- 37:18turn it into a gigantic play and.
- 37:20What are your Devon Lloyd's having?
- 37:22No, absolutely. What 4th interception of the
- 37:24season? He's been tremendous early on
- 37:26by. The way he leads the league.
- 37:28Yeah. Absolutely incredible the
- 37:30penalties. Listen to Andy Reid afterwards.
- 37:32He was frustrated, 13 penalties and mentioned one that wasn't
- 37:35called a penalty. A lot of frustration there.
- 37:37Well, you know what you're going to get on the outside with
- 37:39Taylor, He's going to get penalties, but sloppy the
- 37:42penalties. I'm going to guess that Andy
- 37:44Reid. That's been a point of
- 37:45conversation this week in practice.
- 37:49Well, in Mount Vernon, IA gets involved in this discussion
- 37:51because that's the hometown of Jack Cochrane.
- 37:54And Jack's got 2 Super Bowl rings with us, but he got kind
- 37:57of overpowered on quick returns and got called for holding
- 37:59twice. The first one is one of those
- 38:01you're going, what is that? And then the second one, you
- 38:05know, may be compensating for the first, but those are
- 38:07devastating penalties on kick returns because it backs you up
- 38:12and you're, it's where the penalty occurs.
- 38:15And there was one return I was just watching with Lucas Boyd
- 38:20and Joe Helder and the mini sub here and that you're going to
- 38:23have the ball to 35 of the Jaguars.
- 38:25Let me give you another one. Everybody's forgotten about.
- 38:27And to me, I think it was a turning point in the game.
- 38:30The Chiefs are in control of this game at 14 to nothing.
- 38:33They have the Jags. And yes, it's second quarter and
- 38:35it's early, mid second. They've got them third and 15,
- 38:39and the Jags run around at 11 yards, not even going to get a
- 38:42first down, and the Chiefs get called for DPI.
- 38:46Well, that's a penalty you can't have.
- 38:48They got to get 15 yards to get a first down.
- 38:50You just gave them an automatic first down.
- 38:52And so that penalty was, you know, you can call it sloppy or
- 38:55technique or whatever, but still, that one's devastating.
- 38:58You're going to get the ball in good field position and maybe
- 39:00make it 21 to nothing and change the entire evening.
- 39:04So every play matters. Every quarter of this league's
- 39:06too tight. And so, yeah, that's all that
- 39:09all three phases had their issues and penalty was.
- 39:11Speaking of changing the entire evening, let's do that with our
- 39:14friends at Papa John's for those folks who still don't have
- 39:17dinner plans or weekend plans for football.
- 39:20Or even lunch plan. Pull this off.
- 39:22Yeah. Yeah.
- 39:23Oh yeah. Take a nap about 4:00.
- 39:25That's OK, yes. And this one topping pizza they
- 39:28got for 199 New York style is just, you know, it's taken the
- 39:32world by storm. So I mean, the New York teams
- 39:35may not be very good. They have one win, I think, but
- 39:37the pizzas good that the Papa John's pizza is the best.
- 39:39So papajohns.com, the Donaldsons are so great for the state of
- 39:43Iowa, their locations all across the state.
- 39:45So yeah, check it out and change your evening for sure.
- 39:47Indeed. Thank you, Bud.
- 39:48We'll talk to you next week. Thanks, Mitch.
- 39:50See. Yeah, see you guys.
- 39:51Yep. Take care, 799 for that pizza.
- 39:55Yeah, what a spot. Sunday Night Football.
- 39:58Two and four with a loss, yeah. And by the way, you can hear
- 40:00that game here if you're not in front of your TV, if you're
- 40:02driving around and you're in the central Iowa area.
- 40:04Westwood One one O 6.3 KX&O. Two and four with a loss.
- 40:10Short week, Could it be? Yeah, but it's not over.
- 40:14But have you seen the schedule? Oh, you're dancing on the grave
- 40:17again. A little.
- 40:19Premature. They played the Raiders and then
- 40:22the next three commanders at Bills, at Bronco Colts.
- 40:28Yikes. Sounds like 3 and one no hour 2
- 40:33coming up. Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports
- 40:35Radio Network.
