- 0:15Well, here we are again, back on another edition of the Rancho
- 0:18Radio Podcast. It's good to have you.
- 0:20Thank you for stopping by and I really appreciate all of the
- 0:23people from all over the world that have been tuning into the
- 0:27weekly podcast. We do a, we try to do at least
- 0:30one good show, maybe sometimes 2 every week.
- 0:33And boy, what a great week it's been.
- 0:35I spent so much time just pondering the birth of Jesus,
- 0:40which the rancher book readers around the world celebrated on
- 0:43August 21st. In fact, I, I feel really bad
- 0:47because I, I was so concentrated on that that I actually forgot
- 0:51my wedding anniversary, which is on August 22nd.
- 0:54So, you know, but I got everything squared away.
- 0:57It's all good, but you know it. It's almost hard to believe
- 1:02sometimes that such a tremendously great person
- 1:06personality of such a high order was able to grace our planet for
- 1:11the short time. And the effects of of his truths
- 1:15and his teachings about God being a personal father has
- 1:19completely changed the way that people feel about their religion
- 1:24in the world. And although I know we have so
- 1:28many different conflicts going on and there's great sadness,
- 1:32there's just great sadness in the world.
- 1:34There's so many things that are wrong.
- 1:36But I, I just have to remind myself.
- 1:38And I think the this is where faith really matters.
- 1:43I don't know how people can go without faith.
- 1:49I remember a long time ago, must have been 60 years ago.
- 1:53Maybe, who knows, maybe maybe 50 years ago.
- 1:55Remember the book that Hal Lindsay wrote called The Late
- 1:59Great Planet Earth? Well, I don't remember much
- 2:02about the book, but I do remember that on the back cover
- 2:05it said something to the effect of man can go without food for
- 2:09three days. Man can go without water for a
- 2:14day, 24 hours, but man cannot go without hope for a single
- 2:19second. And that always stuck with me.
- 2:23Always. And then there's also the great
- 2:26line that I picked up from a movie with Paul Newman in The
- 2:29Verdict, where he gives his summation at the end of a trial
- 2:34in which a woman who was killed by a hospital or paralyzed for
- 2:39life. And the odds are stacked against
- 2:42this lawyer. He's trying to save his career.
- 2:45He takes on this case. He takes on.
- 2:47It's like a David and Goliath. If you're not familiar with the
- 2:51movie, it's called The Verdict. And at the very end, he quotes a
- 2:56a Hebrew line that says, act as if she ye had faith, and faith
- 3:03will be given unto you. And that, again, is always stuck
- 3:08out of my mind because what it means is when you don't have
- 3:12faith or you can't muster up the courage to believe that
- 3:16everything is going to be all right, you can act like you have
- 3:20faith. And faith does sometimes come to
- 3:23you because it's so easy to not have faith.
- 3:26It's easier to not have faith. In a minute, I want to talk
- 3:31about something that occurred to me during the week of Jesus's
- 3:34birthday. I I told you I would do very
- 3:37special segments on Jesus's life as a way of celebrating August
- 3:41as Jesus Month. This is our 4th year of doing
- 3:45this, so it's exciting for me to spend more time than usual
- 3:51focusing on the life and teachings of Jesus.
- 3:55And so on Jesus birthday, I made sure to carve out some time and
- 4:01I read reread paper 168 in the Arantia book where it tells us
- 4:06the events leading up to and including the resurrect
- 4:09resurrection of Lazarus, which is also told in John in the New
- 4:14Testament. What was striking to me is how
- 4:18much background information we get in the Urantia Book that
- 4:22expands one's appreciation of the story above and beyond the
- 4:25biblical account. As a Christian in the
- 4:28traditional sense that I can appreciate the Urantia Book
- 4:32narrative for that reason. It makes the biblical story much
- 4:35more real and believable and substantive and also more
- 4:40profound. Have you found that to be true
- 4:42stories that perhaps you were familiar with growing up if you
- 4:46were exposed to any Christian tradition or biblical teachings
- 4:50and then you read the stories in the life and teachings of Jesus
- 4:53and it's all of a sudden this, it's like going from black and
- 4:56white to color. It's like going to 35mm to IMAX.
- 5:02So I wanted to always just trying to think of a way that I
- 5:06could illustrate that. And I think I found a good way
- 5:08to do it. So let me show you what I'm
- 5:11talking about here, and let's talk about the raising of
- 5:14Lazarus from the dead. Now, there's little information
- 5:19about the relationship between Jesus and Lazarus of Bethany, or
- 5:23of Jesus's friendship with their family, including Lazarus's
- 5:27sisters, Mary and Martha, that are noted in John or in Luke.
- 5:31It's very scant. And when we know there's a
- 5:34relationship, John talks about the closeness.
- 5:38But the Urantia Book tells the whole story and includes their
- 5:41early relationship in the Bible. By the time we hear about
- 5:45Lazarus, it is already the last period of Jesus's life.
- 5:51In fact, we're told that the resurrection of Lazarus was the
- 5:54event that finally convinced the Sanhedrin to kill Jesus, fearing
- 5:59the miracle would only enhance the popularity of the man from
- 6:02Nazareth. Now both the biblical account
- 6:06and the Urantia Book concur on this and many other points.
- 6:11So let me read one segment from John and then we will sample the
- 6:16same part of the story in the Urantia book account.
- 6:19And let's see if you can identify how the Urantia book
- 6:22fills in missing pieces that provide for a much better
- 6:26appreciation of the events as they unfolded.
- 6:30So I'm going to read from John 11, chapter one through 16, and
- 6:35this is the King King James Version.
- 6:38So we pick up at 11. Now a man named Lazarus was
- 6:43sick. He was from Bethany, the village
- 6:44of Mary and her sister Martha. This Mary who brother Lazarus
- 6:49now lay sick was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord
- 6:54and wiped his feet with her hair.
- 6:56Remember that was the incident that made people really upset
- 6:59because she was wasting such valuable materials.
- 7:05So the sisters sent word to Jesus quote, Lord, the one you
- 7:09love is sick. When he heard this, Jesus said
- 7:13this sickness will not end in death.
- 7:15No, it it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified
- 7:19through it. Now Jesus loved Martha and her
- 7:23sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus
- 7:27was sick, he stayed where he was two more days.
- 7:31And then he said to his disciples, let us go back to
- 7:34Judea. But Rabbi, they said a short
- 7:39while ago, the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you're
- 7:43going back. And Jesus answered, Are there
- 7:46not 12 hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime
- 7:50will not stumble, for they see by this world's light.
- 7:54It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for
- 7:58they have no light. After he said this he went on to
- 8:02tell them, our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I'm going
- 8:06there to wake him up. From John 1112.
- 8:11His disciples replied, Lord, if he sleeps he will get better.
- 8:16Jesus had been Speaking of his death, but his disciples thought
- 8:20he meant natural sleep. So then he told them plainly,
- 8:25Lazarus is dead and for your sake I am glad I was not there
- 8:30so that you may believe. But let us go to him.
- 8:34Then Thomas, also known as Didymus, said to the rest of the
- 8:37disciples, let us also go, that we may die with him.
- 8:43Now I want to take the narrative as it's told from the Urantia
- 8:46book. Same basic story leading again
- 8:49right up to the event where Jesus performs the resurrection.
- 8:53And this comes from paper 168. Same story that I just told you,
- 8:57sections one through 12. It was shortly afternoon when
- 9:02Martha started out to meet Jesus as he came over the brow of the
- 9:06hill near Bethany. Her brother Lazarus had been
- 9:09dead for four days and had been laid away in their private tomb
- 9:13at the far end of the garden. Late on Sunday afternoon.
- 9:17The stone at the entrance of the tomb had been rolled in place.
- 9:20On the morning of this day, Thursday, when Martha and Mary
- 9:25sent word to Jesus concerning Lazarus illness, they were
- 9:28confident the Master would do something about it.
- 9:31They knew that their brother was desperately sick, and though
- 9:35they hardly dared hope that Jesus would leave His work of
- 9:38teaching and preaching to come to their assistance, they had
- 9:43such confidence in His power to heal diseases that they thought
- 9:46He would just speak the curative words and Lazarus would
- 9:51immediately be made whole. And when Lazarus died a few
- 9:54hours after the messenger left Bethany for Philadelphia, they
- 9:59reasoned that it was because the Master did not learn of their
- 10:02brother's illness until it was too late, until he had already
- 10:06been dead for several hours. But they, with all of their
- 10:10believing friends, were greatly puzzled by the message which the
- 10:14runner brought back Tuesday for noon.
- 10:16When he reached Bethany, the the messenger insisted he heard
- 10:22Jesus say this sickness is really not to the death.
- 10:26Neither could they understand why he sent no word to them nor
- 10:29otherwise proffered assistance. Many friends from nearby Hamlets
- 10:35and others from Jerusalem came over to comfort the sorrow
- 10:39stricken sisters. Lazarus and his sisters were the
- 10:43children of a well to do and honorable Jew, one who had been
- 10:47the leading resident of the little village of Bethany.
- 10:51And notwithstanding that all three had long been ardent
- 10:54followers of Jesus, they were respected, highly respected by
- 10:58all who knew them. They had inherited extensive
- 11:02vineyards and olive orchards in this vicinity.
- 11:05And that they were wealthy was further attested by the fact
- 11:09that they could afford a private burial tomb on their premises.
- 11:14Both of their parents had already been laid away in this
- 11:16tomb. Mary had given up the thought of
- 11:20Jesus coming and was abandoned by to her grief.
- 11:23But Martha clung to the hope that Jesus would come, even up
- 11:28to the time on that very morning when she rolled the stone in
- 11:31front of the tomb and sealed the entrance.
- 11:34Even then she instructed a neighbor lad to keep watch down
- 11:38the Jericho Road from the brow of the hill to the east of
- 11:41Bethany. And it was this lad who brought
- 11:44tidings to Martha that Jesus and his friends were approaching.
- 11:50When Martha met Jesus, she fell at his feet exclaiming, Master,
- 11:54if you have been here, my brother would not have died.
- 11:57Many fears were passing through Martha's mind, but she gave
- 12:00expression to no doubt, nor did she venture to criticize or
- 12:05question the Masters conduct as related to Lazarus's death.
- 12:10When she had spoken, Jesus reached down and lifting her
- 12:13upon her feet only said, Only have faith Martha, and your
- 12:19brother shall rise again. Then Martha answered, I know
- 12:23that he will rise again in the resurrection of the last day,
- 12:27and even now I believe that whatever you shall ask of God,
- 12:31our Father will give you. Then said Jesus, looking
- 12:36straight into the eyes of Martha, I am the resurrection
- 12:39and the life. He who believes in me, though he
- 12:42dies, yet shall he live in truth.
- 12:46Whoever lives and believes in me shall never really die.
- 12:49Martha, do you believe this? And Martha answered the Master,
- 12:53Yes, I have long believed that you are the Deliverer, the Son
- 12:58of the living God, even he who should come to this world.
- 13:04Jesus having inquired for Mary, Martha went at once into the
- 13:08house, and whispering to her sister, said, The Master is here
- 13:13and has asked for you. And when when Mary heard this,
- 13:17she rose up quickly and hastened out to meet Jesus, who still
- 13:21tarried at the place some distance from the house where
- 13:24Martha had first met him. The friends who were with Mary,
- 13:29seeking to comfort her, when they saw that she rose up
- 13:32quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was
- 13:36going to the tomb to weep. Many of those present were
- 13:40Jesus's bitter enemies. That is why Martha had come out
- 13:43to meet Him alone, and also why she went in secretly to inform
- 13:47Mary that He had asked for her. Martha, while craving to see
- 13:52Jesus, desire to avoid any possible unpleasantness which
- 13:57might be caused by His coming suddenly into the midst of a
- 14:00large group of His Jerusalem enemies.
- 14:03It had been Martha's intention to remain in the house with her
- 14:06friends while Mary went to greet Jesus, but in this she failed,
- 14:10for they all followed Mary and so found themselves unexpectedly
- 14:15in the presence of the Master. Martha LED Mary to Jesus, and
- 14:21when she saw him, she fell at his feet, exclaiming, If you'd
- 14:24only been here, my brother would not have died.
- 14:27And when Jesus saw how they all grieved over the death of
- 14:30Lazarus, his soul was moved with compassion.
- 14:34When the mourners saw that Mary had gone to greet Jesus, they
- 14:37withdrew for a short distance while both Mary and Martha
- 14:42talked with the Master and received further words of
- 14:44comfort and exhortation to maintain strong faith in the
- 14:48Father and complete resignation to the divine will.
- 14:53The human mind of Jesus was mightily moved by the contention
- 14:57between his love for Lazarus and the bereaved sisters, and his
- 15:02disdain and contempt for the outward show of affection
- 15:06manifested by some of these unbelieving and murderously
- 15:10intentional Jews. Jesus indignantly resented the
- 15:14show of forced and outward mourning for Lazarus by some of
- 15:18these professed friends, inasmuch as such false sorrow
- 15:22was associated in their hearts with so much bitter enmity
- 15:27toward himself. Some of these Jews, however,
- 15:31were sincere in their mourning, for they were real friends of
- 15:35the family. So on both accounts we get
- 15:40essentially the same story, but can you observe how much more
- 15:44detail is provided? More of the back story, in part
- 15:48because the authors of Paper 168 also had access to mortal
- 15:54transcripts of the people who were actually there at the time.
- 15:58John's account is a reflection of his experience as he
- 16:01remembered it. The Urantia Book narrative
- 16:04presents the same story, but fills in the context of the
- 16:08relation of Jesus with his Bethany friends, as well as
- 16:12those who were in the crowd and had a real disdain for him.
- 16:16In John's account, he notates that he is well aware that there
- 16:20are those in the crowd who don't like Jesus very well, but in the
- 16:23Urantia Book account we actually learn who they are and what
- 16:27they're thinking. But let's look at the
- 16:30resurrection itself and compare the two narratives, again
- 16:34highlighting the more expansive account provided by the Urantia
- 16:37Book. So from John 1132 to 43, we
- 16:42read. When Mary reached the place
- 16:44where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, Lord,
- 16:48if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
- 16:52When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come along with
- 16:55her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.
- 17:00Where have you laid him? He asked.
- 17:03Come and see, Lord, they replied.
- 17:05Jesus wept. Then the Jew said, See how he
- 17:09loved him. But some of them said, could not
- 17:12he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man
- 17:15from dying? Jesus once more deeply moved,
- 17:21came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid
- 17:25across the entrance. Take away the stone, he said.
- 17:28But Lord said Martha, the sister of the dead man, by this time
- 17:33there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days from John
- 17:4040. Then Jesus said, did I not tell
- 17:43you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?
- 17:47So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said,
- 17:51Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
- 17:55I knew that you always hear me. But I said this for the benefit
- 17:59of the people standing here, that they may believe that you
- 18:02sent me. When he had said this, Jesus
- 18:05called in a loud voice. Lazarus, come out.
- 18:09The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of
- 18:13linen and a cloth around his face.
- 18:16Jesus said to them, Take off the grave clothes and let him go.
- 18:21Now let's turn back to the Urantia book, Paper 168, same
- 18:25segment of the story, and it reads from Paper 168, Section 1.
- 18:31After Jesus has spent a few moments in comforting Martha and
- 18:34Mary apart from the mourners, he asked them, Where have you laid
- 18:38him? Then Martha said, come out and
- 18:40see. And as the Master followed on in
- 18:43silence with the two sorrowing sisters, he wept.
- 18:47When the friendly Jews who followed after him saw his
- 18:50fears, one of them said, Behold, how he loved him.
- 18:55Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind have kept this man
- 18:58from dying? By this time they were standing
- 19:02before the family tomb, a small natural cave or declivity, and
- 19:07the ledge of rock which rose up some 30 feet at the far end of
- 19:11the garden plot. It is difficult to explain to
- 19:15human minds just why Jesus wept. While we have access to the
- 19:20registration of the combined human emotions and divine
- 19:24thoughts as a record in the mind of the personalized gesture, we
- 19:30are not altogether certain about the real cause of these
- 19:33emotional manifestations. We are inclined to believe that
- 19:37Jesus wept because of a number of thoughts and feelings which
- 19:41were going through His mind at this time, such as he felt a
- 19:46genuine and sorrowful sympathy for Martha and Mary.
- 19:49He had a real and deep human affection for these sisters who
- 19:53had lost the brother. He was perturbed in his mind by
- 19:57the presence of the crowd of mourners, some sincere and some
- 20:01merely pretenders. He always resented these outward
- 20:05exhibitions of mourning. He knew the sisters loved their
- 20:08brother and had faith in the survival of believers.
- 20:12These conflicting emotions may possibly explain why he groaned
- 20:17as they came near the tomb. And then there's this, which I
- 20:21find really fascinating. He truly hesitated about
- 20:25bringing Lazarus back to mortal life.
- 20:28His sisters really needed him. But Jesus regretted having to
- 20:32summon his friend back to experience the bitter
- 20:36persecution which he well knew Lazarus would have to endure as
- 20:40a result of being the subject of the greatest of all
- 20:43demonstrations of the divine power of the Son of Man.
- 20:49It's a much bigger story there. So now, now let me add one more
- 20:54element to this story that is not disclosed in the Bible owing
- 20:57to the fact that no, no mortal man would have known what was
- 21:01going on behind the scenes, but that we are now Privy to it
- 21:05because of the authors of the Urantia book are midway errs our
- 21:09unseen friends who many were even present at the time of this
- 21:14momentous event. From Paper 168, Section 2.
- 21:21As this company of some 45 mortals stood before the tomb,
- 21:25they could only dim. They could only dimly see the
- 21:28form of Lazarus, wrapped in linen bandages, resting on the
- 21:33right lower niche of the burial cave.
- 21:36While these earth creatures stood there in almost breathless
- 21:39silence, a vast host of celestial beings had swung into
- 21:44their places, preparatory to answering the signal for action
- 21:48when it should be given by Gabriel, their commander.
- 21:52Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, Father, I am thankful that
- 21:55you heard and granted my request.
- 21:58I know that You always hear me, but because of those who stand
- 22:02here with me, I thus speak with you, that they may believe that
- 22:07you have sent me into the world, and that they may know that you
- 22:11are the you are working with me in that which we are about to
- 22:15do. And when he had prayed, he cried
- 22:19with a loud voice. Lazarus, come forth.
- 22:24Though these human observers remained at motionless, the Bas,
- 22:27Celestial, Hulse were all astir in unified action and obedience
- 22:32to the Creator's Word. In just 12 seconds of Earth
- 22:35time, the hitherto lifeless form of Lazarus began to move and
- 22:42presently sat up on the edge of the stone shelf where it had
- 22:45rested. His body was bound with the
- 22:49grave cloth and his face was covered with a napkin.
- 22:52And as he stood up before them alive, Jesus said, lose him and
- 22:57let him go. All save the apostles with
- 23:01Martha and Mary fled to the house.
- 23:03They were pale with fright and overcome with astonishment.
- 23:07While some tarried, many hastened to their homes.
- 23:12Lazarus greeted Jesus and the apostles and asked the meaning
- 23:16of the grave clothes and why he had awakened in the garden.
- 23:22Jesus and the apostles drew to one side while Martha told
- 23:25Lazarus of his death, burial, and resurrection.
- 23:29She had to explain to him that he had died on Sunday and was
- 23:33now brought back to life on Thursday, inasmuch as he had no
- 23:37consciousness of time since falling asleep and death.
- 23:42As Lazarus came out of the tomb, the personalized adjuster of
- 23:45Jesus, now chief of his kind in this local universe, gave
- 23:50command to the former adjuster of Lazarus now and waiting to
- 23:54resume a boat in the mind and soul of the resurrected man.
- 23:59Then went Lazarus over to Jesus with his sisters, knelt at the
- 24:03Master's feet to give thanks and offer praise to God.
- 24:07Jesus, taking Lazarus by the hand, lifted him up, saying, My
- 24:11son, what has happened to you will also be experienced by all
- 24:16who believe this gospel, except that they shall be resurrected
- 24:20in a more glorious form. You shall be a living witness of
- 24:24the truth which I spoke. I am the resurrection and the
- 24:28life. But let us all now go into the
- 24:31house and partake of nourishment for these physical bodies.
- 24:35As they walked toward the house, Gabriel dismissed the extra
- 24:38groups of the assembled heavenly hosts while he made record of
- 24:43the first instance on Urantia and the last where a mortal
- 24:47creature had been resurrected in the likeness of the physical
- 24:52body of death. Lazarus could hardly comprehend
- 24:56what had occurred. He knew he had been very sick,
- 24:59but he could only recall that he had fallen asleep and had been
- 25:03awakened. He was never able to tell
- 25:06anything about these four days in the tomb because he was
- 25:09wholly unconscious. Time is non existent to those
- 25:14who sleep. The sleep of death and all that
- 25:17comes from one paper. 168 talking about the resurrection
- 25:22of Lazarus. So you can see from this
- 25:25illustration that the Bible has the facts, but the Urantia book
- 25:32coupled with the other circumstances brings forth much
- 25:37more context and profound truths.
- 25:41And this is a good example of why the Bible and the Urantia
- 25:46book sort of work hand in hand. So for people who are very
- 25:50familiar, I will say to this is a is a closing comment that I'm
- 25:55grateful for my exposure of Christian teachings.
- 26:00I'm grateful that I was exposed to them because they form the
- 26:04soil so that years later in my life I would stumble upon this
- 26:10book, the Urantia book, and it would take the soil that was
- 26:15already there, the foundational truths, because without them I'm
- 26:19not sure I would have the full appreciation.
