Latest / Crafted Clarity: Distilling the Tension Between Success and Significance / When a Long Season Becomes a Question of Your Identity
Transcript
- 0:01If you go back to the beginning of a season you chose, there's
- 0:05usually a moment that started it all.
- 0:08Something didn't fit, something felt misaligned, or something
- 0:12new started pulling at you. And then you moved.
- 0:16You stepped into something left, something started, something
- 0:22shifted direction. And with that move, whether you
- 0:26said it out loud or not, you attach the timeline, not just
- 0:31how long it would take, but what it would feel like when it
- 0:35started to work. We all do this.
- 0:39We try to make the unknown manageable.
- 0:42And in the beginning of a season, there's usually energy
- 0:46movement. Even if it's uncomfortable,
- 0:49there's still a sense of direction.
- 0:53Then the middle shows up and the middle is different.
- 0:58The momentum slows. The clarity you felt at the
- 1:01beginning that doesn't feel as accessible.
- 1:05It didn't disappear. It's just harder to hold on to
- 1:08when nothing around you is confirming it.
- 1:12And then the timeline that you had in your head, well, that
- 1:15starts to drift. First, it's just, why is this
- 1:20taking so long? But over time, that question
- 1:24turns into, what does it say about me that it's taking this
- 1:28long? That's the turn.
- 1:32Nothing necessarily changed around you, but the length of it
- 1:35starts to feel like evidence. Evidence that maybe you misread
- 1:40something, that maybe you move too quickly, that maybe you
- 1:44stepped into something that wasn't actually meant for you.
- 1:49You start to see this in small ways.
- 1:52You pause before answering. When someone asks how things are
- 1:56going, you do the math in your head before you say how long
- 2:00it's been. You adjust the story because the
- 2:05honest version is harder to say out loud.
- 2:11If you go back to the beginning of the season you chose, there's
- 2:15usually a moment that started it all.
- 2:17Something didn't fit anymore, something felt misaligned, or
- 2:22something new started to pull at you.
- 2:25Then you moved. You stepped into something left.
- 2:29Something started, Something shifted direction.
- 2:33And with that move, whether you said it out loud or not, you
- 2:37attached a timeline. Not just how long it would take,
- 2:42but what it would feel like when it started to work.
- 2:46We all do this. We try to make the unknown
- 2:49manageable. And in the beginning of a
- 2:52season, there's usually energy movement.
- 2:56Even if it's uncomfortable, there's still a sense of
- 2:59direction. Then the middle shows up and the
- 3:04middle is different. The momentum slows.
- 3:08The clarity you felt at the beginning, that doesn't feel as
- 3:11accessible. It didn't disappear.
- 3:14It's just harder to hold when nothing around you is confirming
- 3:19it. And the timeline that you had in
- 3:21your head, well, that starts to drift.
- 3:25At first, it's why is this taking so long?
- 3:29But over time, that question turns into what does this say
- 3:33about me that it's taking this long?
- 3:37That's the turn. Nothing necessarily changed
- 3:40around you, but the length of it starts to feel like evidence.
- 3:46Evidence that maybe you misread something, that maybe you moved
- 3:49too quickly, that maybe you stepped into something that
- 3:53wasn't actually meant for you. You start to see this in a
- 3:58couple of small ways. You pause before answering when
- 4:02someone asks how are things going, or you do the math in
- 4:06your head before you say how long it's been.
- 4:11You adjust the story because the honest version is harder to say
- 4:16out loud. And then comes the thought.
- 4:21Maybe I was wrong about myself. There's a place in every
- 4:27distillery where the barrels go after they're filled.
- 4:30It's called a Rick house. It's where the whiskey is aged,
- 4:34stacked in barrels and in rows, and left for seasons at a time.
- 4:40If you've ever stepped into a Rick house, the first thing you
- 4:42notice is the light, or more accurately, the lack of it.
- 4:48It's not completely dark, but it's dim, like the light has
- 4:52been filtered through time. The barrels are stacked higher
- 4:56than you would expect, row after row, and it's quiet in a way
- 5:01that feels intentional, even though no one told you to be
- 5:05quiet. And then you feel the air
- 5:09humidity, temperature, stillness.
- 5:13In the summer, the heat pushes the spirit in the barrels
- 5:17outward, expanding deeper into the wood and drawing out what
- 5:20the barrel has been holding. In the winter.
- 5:23It contracts, pulling back in and taking something new with
- 5:28it. Expansion.
- 5:30Contraction, over and over, season after season.
- 5:36And when you're standing in the Rick house, you realize
- 5:38something. Whatever's happening in those
- 5:41barrels isn't happening on anyone's timeline.
- 5:46The distiller doesn't stand at the door and decide when a
- 5:48barrel is ready. The distiller waits and trusts
- 5:53that the process knows something that the calendar doesn't.
- 5:57People who aren't into whiskey don't always realize that before
- 6:02whiskey ever goes into a barrel, it's clear.
- 6:06I mean completely clear. They call it white dog.
- 6:10No color, no complexity, no depth.
- 6:14Just raw spirit, functional but unformed.
- 6:20Before the spirit ever goes in, the inside of the barrel has
- 6:24already been prepared. The wood inside the barrel has
- 6:27been charred with fire. That char becomes the filter
- 6:31that draws out what doesn't belong and release what does.
- 6:37The same thing happens to us in a long season.
- 6:40Things tend to get filtered out. The timelines that you set that
- 6:45were never really yours to set, the definitions of success you
- 6:49inherited without questioning the version of yourself you
- 6:54thought was true about you. The char doesn't remove identity
- 6:59from the spirit, and neither does this season for you.
- 7:03It reveals it. Now if the whiskey could speak
- 7:08somewhere in the middle of that season, it might say something
- 7:12like I used to be clear. I knew exactly what I was, and
- 7:17now I don't recognize what I'm becoming.
- 7:22I can't see what's being added. I can't see what's being taken
- 7:25away. I just know that I'm not what I
- 7:28was, and I don't know if that's the process working or if
- 7:33something is going wrong. That's the voice in the middle
- 7:38of a season. There are seasons where we are
- 7:43the distiller, we're making decisions, setting directions,
- 7:47applying the heat. And then there are seasons that
- 7:50feel nothing like that. Seasons where we made the move,
- 7:55we set the direction and we stepped in with intention.
- 8:00But once the barrel is sealed, we become the whiskey.
- 8:05We're not driving this anymore. We're inside.
- 8:11Some of you were here for Season 2.
- 8:14That's when the season started for us.
- 8:17My wife had stepped into a career change.
- 8:19Not casually, not reactively. She had clarity about the
- 8:24direction. We had talked about it and there
- 8:28was just a sense that something needed to shift.
- 8:32And like most of us, we had a timeline in mind.
- 8:36A few months, get through the transition, find the next thing,
- 8:41and let's move forward. That was 15 months ago, and I
- 8:47don't pretend that 15 months felt like the plan.
- 8:51There were conversations about money, questions about what was
- 8:55next and that tension that shows up when something takes longer
- 9:00than you thought it would. And then the questions, what
- 9:05does this say about us, about the decision, about whether we
- 9:09read this right? She could have left the barrel
- 9:14at any point. Month three, month 6, month 10.
- 9:19No one would have blamed her. But she stayed.
- 9:24And the choice of stay was repeated every month for the
- 9:28past 15 months. So about 90 days ago, a
- 9:32consulting opportunity appeared for her.
- 9:35It wasn't something that she was looking for, but something that
- 9:39just showed up. An opportunity she was ready for
- 9:42in a way she would not have been ready for a year earlier.
- 9:48Not just ready to show up and do the work, but ready to see
- 9:51herself clearly inside. It is something she's actually
- 9:56great at, where she brings real value and the kind of work that
- 10:01fits who she is, not just what she's capable of.
- 10:06And out of that 90 days came something that she's building
- 10:11her own consulting practice. And there's a new excitement now
- 10:15that wasn't there at the beginning.
- 10:18And all because the season didn't end. 15 months in, the
- 10:23barrel wasn't wasted. And what's emerging isn't a
- 10:27different version of her. It's a truer one, one that's
- 10:31more clear and one that she couldn't have gotten any
- 10:35earlier. Now, here's what I've been
- 10:39sitting with as I've watched the season unfold and was talking to
- 10:42leaders who are navigating seasons just like these.
- 10:47Some of us choose the season that we're in.
- 10:50We made the move. We stepped in with intention,
- 10:54and we can step back out if we decide it's it's taking long
- 10:57enough. But if we do, we risk trading
- 11:01transformation for relief. We get the comfort of movement
- 11:06without the formation the season was meant to provide, and we
- 11:12might miss the moving closer to what we're actually built for.
- 11:17Those of us who are in seasons that we didn't choose, The
- 11:21leadership crisis that arrived without permission, an
- 11:24organization that stopped responding the way it used to.
- 11:28A market shift. A health season, something that
- 11:31put us in the barrel before we had a say in it.
- 11:36You can't unchoose those seasons either.
- 11:39The invitation isn't really about staying or leaving.
- 11:43It's about stopping the fight long enough to let the process
- 11:47finish, because in both kinds of seasons, the barrel is doing
- 11:53something whether you choose it or not, whether you can leave it
- 11:58or not. The question underneath is the
- 12:01same. Are you going to trust what's
- 12:04happening inside or spend the season fighting the process
- 12:08instead of receiving it? Maybe it was a career change
- 12:14like ours. Maybe it's a leadership season
- 12:16where nothing is moving the way you thought it would, and the
- 12:20plateau has started to feel like a reflection of you.
- 12:24Maybe it's a transition you stepped into with a clear sense
- 12:27of direction that the middle has made it harder to hold on to.
- 12:32Maybe it's a season you didn't choose at all, and the length of
- 12:36it is starting to feel less like formation and more like
- 12:39punishment. Maybe it's a quieter than that.
- 12:45Just a long season where the question underneath everything
- 12:49has slowly become am I still what I thought I was?
- 12:56You have a version of this. It probably doesn't look like
- 12:59ours, but you might know exactly what I'm talking about.
- 13:06Something starts to happen in a long season that's worth naming.
- 13:12The timeline becomes the measure, and when the timeline
- 13:16becomes the measure, identity starts to get pulled into the
- 13:20verdict. If it's taking this long,
- 13:23something must be off with my judgement, my instincts, my
- 13:28ability to read a situation. But sometimes what it looks like
- 13:33delay is something that just isn't finished yet.
- 13:38The char is still working, the wood is still giving, and the
- 13:42season is still doing what the season came to do.
- 13:46And what I keep learning from watching a 15 month season
- 13:50unfold right next to me is that the question underneath?
- 13:55A long season isn't always how do I get through this faster?
- 14:00Sometimes it's closer to what is season making possible that
- 14:05nothing else could because the confidence my wife is stepping
- 14:10into now, the clarity about who she is and what she's built to
- 14:14do, well, that didn't come from the consulting opportunity.
- 14:19It was revealed by it. It formed in the 15 months that
- 14:24felt too long until they didn't. If you've ever been to a whiskey
- 14:31tasting, you write down what stood out.
- 14:35Here are my tasting notes from today.
- 14:37Yours might be different one. The question shifts from why is
- 14:44this taking so long to what does this say about me?
- 14:49And that shift is worth noticing.
- 14:51Those aren't the same question. The first one is about timing.
- 14:56The second one is about identity.
- 14:59And when identity enters the room, the season stops feeling
- 15:03like a situation and starts feeling like a verdict.
- 15:08It isn't 1 but it can feel that way when the timeline has
- 15:12stretched past what you told yourself it would notice when
- 15:18you've made that shift. Because the question you're
- 15:20actually asking changes everything about how you hear
- 15:24the answer. 2 The timeline wasn't was something that you
- 15:29set. The season didn't agree to it.
- 15:33We attach timelines to seasons because the unknown feels more
- 15:37manageable that way. But the season doesn't know your
- 15:40timeline, it just knows its work, and releasing the timeline
- 15:45doesn't release the direction. It means trusting the process
- 15:50more than the calendar. What would it feel like to give
- 15:54the season permission to take as long as it needs?
- 15:593 The char filters what it doesn't belong, So what does can
- 16:06surface in a long season? Something is being filtered.
- 16:11The noise, the performance, the version of yourself built for
- 16:15someone else's definition of success.
- 16:19You might not be able to see it yet, but the filtering is
- 16:22happening and what's left when it's done tends to be closer to
- 16:28what was always true than anything you started with in the
- 16:34last note. Can I trust myself is not the
- 16:38same as I can't be trusted. 1 is a question we're sitting with.
- 16:44The other is a verdict on the season that doesn't have the
- 16:47authority to deliver. The doubt that surfaces in a
- 16:51long season isn't evidence of bad judgement, it might just be
- 16:57evidence that something real is being formed.
- 17:01If you need more time with these thoughts, there's a more in
- 17:04depth version of these tasting notes on our website.
- 17:08No login is required, just a space to go further.
- 17:13If today's third something in you the season is longer than
- 17:18you said it would be. The question has turned inward.
- 17:23You entered this as the distiller, you made the move,
- 17:26set the direction, stepped in with intention, and then the
- 17:30barrel is sealed and now you're the whiskey.
- 17:35Maybe you can leave, maybe you can't, but either way the barrel
- 17:40is doing something and the transformation you were after,
- 17:44the reason you entered in the 1st place or the thing that is
- 17:48in this unchosen season is making possible that only
- 17:53finishes if you stop fighting the process long enough to
- 17:57receive it. So stay in the barrel, and as
- 18:02you're somewhere in your season, remember clarity isn't found,
- 18:08it's crafted. Thanks for listening to Crafted
