Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: Good luck with the social media ban Australia
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So today is the day the Australians lead the world
- 0:02Speaker 1: with the social media ban for people under sixteen. So
- 0:04Speaker 1: good luck with that, because you know, the kids who
- 0:07Speaker 1: still want to be online will get around it, because
- 0:09Speaker 1: you know, kids and computers. They can't speak the Queen's English,
- 0:12Speaker 1: but they can sure speak computer. They'll get round it.
- 0:13Speaker 1: They'll VPN, they'll forge and weasele their way through the
- 0:17Speaker 1: same way that we all got our hands on booze
- 0:20Speaker 1: when we were under age. And the kids who will
- 0:24Speaker 1: actively skirt the law are either the ones who believe
- 0:27Speaker 1: that social media benefits their life and society and I
- 0:29Speaker 1: need it and I want it, I'm going to have
- 0:30Speaker 1: it and I'm prepared to break the law, or they're
- 0:32Speaker 1: hoping one day they might actually get some positive self
- 0:35Speaker 1: affirmation off it, even though more often than not they're bullied,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and of course the bullies themselves. Because the bullies like
- 0:40Speaker 1: the social media and they want to keep doing it
- 0:42Speaker 1: and they having fun. They are not going to pay
- 0:44Speaker 1: attention to some words in black and white written by
- 0:46Speaker 1: some old parliamentarians in a grand hall wearing their fancy clothes.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Thanks Dad, no thanks. The kids are not going to
- 0:52Speaker 1: be thankful you've taken away their town hall, their community center,
- 0:56Speaker 1: their pub. They're going to be some of them are
- 0:58Speaker 1: going to be resentful, are going to be happy, some
- 1:01Speaker 1: are going to be resentful. And I reckon there's a
- 1:03Speaker 1: lot of parents who reckon social media has rotted their brains,
- 1:06Speaker 1: the brains of their kids, so they're behind it. And
- 1:08Speaker 1: why we've asked them. They go, well, oh, they are
- 1:11Speaker 1: on social media, my kids and now they've turned into socialists.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Just anyway, look the whole thing, and I think Patrick
- 1:18Speaker 1: said this, it's a signal, and that's virtue signaling. And
- 1:22Speaker 1: we all know how we feel about virtue signaling. The
- 1:24Speaker 1: last government was great in even if the virtue is
- 1:27Speaker 1: a good one. And speaking which talking about virtue signaling,
- 1:31Speaker 1: I found the whole argibargie between the Before sixteen crew
- 1:34Speaker 1: and the Prime Minister to be a little bit distasteful.
- 1:36Speaker 1: It seemed like these guys were more concerned about who
- 1:39Speaker 1: gets the credit for the posturing rather than helping the
- 1:41Speaker 1: kids themselves. But look, here we go, the messages out there,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and it's a good one. Keep your kids' social media
- 1:48Speaker 1: usage as low as possible. You are the parent, so parent,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and here's my thing, My boys are in their twenties
- 1:56Speaker 1: and they grew they grew up with all of this,
- 1:58Speaker 1: and I remember asking them when they are teens, boys,
- 2:01Speaker 1: if you've been cyber bullied on social media? And their
- 2:03Speaker 1: reply was not really. And then they said, look, if
- 2:05Speaker 1: you're being bullied and if you're being handled, what do
- 2:07Speaker 1: you do is you block the dickheads. And that's what
- 2:11Speaker 1: I do. That's what we do too. Oh and we
- 2:15Speaker 1: just turned the phone off. And by the way, can
- 2:17Speaker 1: you drive me to football? Kids are still being kids,
- 2:19Speaker 1: And I see them out and about at the moment.
- 2:22Speaker 1: They're on holiday already. They're at the beach and they're
- 2:23Speaker 1: hanging out and they're not scrolling on their phones. But
- 2:26Speaker 1: I'll tell you what the adults are for more from
- 2:29Speaker 1: Early Edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to News Talks.
- 2:32Speaker 1: It'd be from five am weekdays, or follow the podcast
- 2:35Speaker 1: on iHeartRadio.
