- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happen to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the I'm actually at the bird
- 0:31feeder right this minute, not the chicken coop, the chickens
- 0:34are all out, but I have a funny story to share with you.
- 0:36So when we first started this whole project of the farm, I
- 0:42really a huge intention of making this place like
- 0:45completely organic, inviting as many animals as I possibly could
- 0:50that could coexist and live really well together.
- 0:53Hence my whole purpose of trying to have, you know, the crows
- 0:57work with the crows and feed them peanuts so that they
- 1:00protect the chickens and that, you know, we cultivate
- 1:02dragonflies so that the dragonflies eat the mosquitoes
- 1:05and the pond has turtles and all kinds of things in it that are
- 1:10just unbelievable, the things that are showing up.
- 1:14But in any event, so this morning, why am I at the bird
- 1:17feeder? Well, because a few like 20-3
- 1:21months ago, we had a Mallard duck show up and he brought with
- 1:26him, He was showed up by himself at 1st and then he came with a
- 1:30female and they would hang around, but they would leave and
- 1:33go and leave and go. And then we saw her sitting on
- 1:37some eggs and unwittingly, ducks are not particularly choosy, but
- 1:43where they lay their eggs. So she laid them under a a bench
- 1:46that we had made out of a big chunk of one of the trees that
- 1:49had fallen. And of course, those eggs got
- 1:52eaten pretty quickly by something overnight.
- 1:55So she abandoned him. She took off and she abandoned
- 1:58him. And I felt so bad for him
- 2:01because every day he was by himself and he was here and he
- 2:05was hanging out with the chickens.
- 2:06And the chickens come to the bird feeder, hang around at the
- 2:10bottom of it in case the birds spill something.
- 2:12But they're also most of the day out hunting, looking for other
- 2:15things. But this duck kept hanging
- 2:17around, hanging around. And I, I had said, you know
- 2:22what, if you, if she left you, that's OK, you're going to find
- 2:26somebody else. And I kept talking to him and so
- 2:29now he's my friend and he keeps coming, you know, consistently.
- 2:35And then about 3 days ago, he showed up with a different
- 2:38female duck. And I can tell because she's got
- 2:40different markings and she is clearly not as skittish as the
- 2:45first female duck was because she hangs out and she's, you
- 2:49know, she'll let me walk pretty close up to her.
- 2:51And he lets me get much closer than he did when he first
- 2:53started arriving. And I always have scratch, which
- 2:56is kind of like this mishmash of feed of corn and just some other
- 3:02grains for chickens. I don't give them that much of
- 3:04it, but I always have like a little bit.
- 3:07And I give it to him on the side, especially if Amelia's not
- 3:11following me. And I can sneak it because
- 3:12Amelia loves scratch and she will just eat it all.
- 3:15So anyway, point is this morning there they were waiting for me
- 3:21right outside the door. He brought her right close up to
- 3:24the door and they're waiting there and I'm laughing about it
- 3:27because I'm like, you know, if this isn't a manifestation of
- 3:30everything that I had wanted, it's crazy.
- 3:34I've got Bluebirds that have are using the Bluebird houses that
- 3:39we have three or four of them out there and they're using them
- 3:42like condominiums moving in and out, laying eggs, having babies,
- 3:46moving out. I've set the parameters up so
- 3:49that they have the perfect, you know, what they need in order to
- 3:54succeed and thrive. So you've got the house, you've
- 3:56got it right near a tree, you've got a water source with a bird
- 3:59bath plus the pond. And then they have food which
- 4:02they love, freeze dried mealworms so they can come.
- 4:05I've got all these other my chickens are thriving at the
- 4:10dragonflies are thriving. Everything is going and now I
- 4:13had always wanted ducks, but I didn't want to like raise ducks
- 4:17because then I knew if I did they they can get really messy
- 4:20and they don't do well when you're raising chickens and
- 4:24ducks together. That can be tricky disease wise,
- 4:28like farming them. But having a pair of ducks that
- 4:32just show up is just so sweet. And they're right now as I'm
- 4:36speaking to you, I just given them some scratch on the edge of
- 4:39the pond and he took her right down to where I poured it and
- 4:42they're eating breakfast, happy as can be.
- 4:45They'll jump in the water and then they will go out there and
- 4:48you know, it's a pretty big pond.
- 4:50It's a quarter acre pond. So they have plenty of space and
- 4:53they can, you know, go around and do whatever it is that they
- 4:56want to do for the day. And it's so hysterical to me
- 5:00that even if you just think these things and you live in the
- 5:06intention of creating it, but that particular thought of the
- 5:09duck was not there. But the overall feeling of
- 5:12creating this environment where creatures can just come and be
- 5:16safe and survive is definitely always in my head.
- 5:20Boy, it is just happening more and more and more.
- 5:23We're seeing more and more things and I just wanted to
- 5:27share that with you. So hold your thoughts special
- 5:30because I can tell you they show up.
- 5:32All right, my friends, I will see you tomorrow and I hope you
- 5:35have a blessed day. Bye.
