Speaker 1: Chapter five, The last of the blind Man. My curiosity
• 0:05
Speaker 1: in a sense was stronger than my fear, for I
• 0:08
Speaker 1: could not remain where I was, but crept back to
• 0:11
Speaker 1: the bank again, whence, sheltering my head behind a bush
• 0:15
Speaker 1: of broom, I might command the road before our door.
• 0:20
Speaker 1: I was scarcely in position. Ere my enemies began to arrive,
• 0:24
Speaker 1: seven or eight of them, running hard, their feet beating
• 0:28
Speaker 1: out of time along the road, and the man with
• 0:31
Speaker 1: the lantern some paces in front. Three men ran together
• 0:35
Speaker 1: hand in hand, and I made out, even through the mist,
• 0:39
Speaker 1: that the middle man of this trio was the blind beggar.
• 0:43
Speaker 1: The next moment, his voice showed me I was right
• 0:47
Speaker 1: down with the door. He cried, ay ay, Sir answered
• 0:52
Speaker 1: two or three, and a rush was made upon the
• 0:54
Speaker 1: admiral benbow, the lantern bearer following. And then I could
• 0:59
Speaker 1: see them and hear speeches passed in a lower key,
• 1:03
Speaker 1: as if they were surprised to find the door open.
• 1:06
Speaker 1: But the pause was brief, for the blind man again
• 1:09
Speaker 1: issued his commands. His voice sounded louder and higher, as
• 1:15
Speaker 1: if he were afire with eagerness and rage in in
• 1:20
Speaker 1: in he shouted and cursed them for their delay. Four
• 1:25
Speaker 1: or five of them obeyed at once, two remaining on
• 1:28
Speaker 1: the road with the formidable beggar. There was a pause,
• 1:32
Speaker 1: then a cry of surprise, then a voice shouting from
• 1:35
Speaker 1: the house. Bill's dead. But the blind man swore at
• 1:40
Speaker 1: them again for their delay, search him. Some of you
• 1:43
Speaker 1: shrink in lubbers, and the rest of you loft and
• 1:46
Speaker 1: get the chest. He cried. I could hear their feet
• 1:51
Speaker 1: rattling up our old stairs, so that the house must
• 1:55
Speaker 1: have shook with it. Promptly afterwards, fresh sounds of astonishment
• 1:59
Speaker 1: are rose. The window of the captain's room was thrown
• 2:03
Speaker 1: open with a slam and a jingle of broken glass,
• 2:07
Speaker 1: and a man leaning out into the moonlight, head and shoulders,
• 2:11
Speaker 1: and addressed the blind beggar on the road below him. Pew,
• 2:15
Speaker 1: he cried, they've been before us. Someone's turned the chest
• 2:20
Speaker 1: out a loud and alaft is it there? Roared pew.
• 2:25
Speaker 1: The money's there. The blind man cussed the money flint's fist.
• 2:30
Speaker 1: I mean, he cried, I don't see it here. Nohow,
• 2:36
Speaker 1: returned the man. Here you below, there is it on? Bill,
• 2:40
Speaker 1: cried the blind man again. At that another fellow, probably
• 2:45
Speaker 1: he who had remained below to search. The captain's body.
• 2:48
Speaker 1: Came to the door of the inn. Bill's been overhauled already,
• 2:53
Speaker 1: he said, nothing left. It's these people of the inn.
• 2:58
Speaker 1: It's that boy. I wish I had put his eyes out,
• 3:03
Speaker 1: cried the blind man. Pew. They were here no time ago.
• 3:08
Speaker 1: They had the door bolted when I tried it. Scatter,
• 3:11
Speaker 1: lads and find them. Sure enough they left their glim here,
• 3:15
Speaker 1: said the fellow from the window. Scatter and find them.
• 3:19
Speaker 1: Rout the house out, reiterated Pew, striking with his stick
• 3:24
Speaker 1: upon the road. Then there followed a great to do
• 3:27
Speaker 1: through all our old inn, heavy feet pounding to and fro,
• 3:33
Speaker 1: furniture all thrown over, doors kicked in, until the very
• 3:37
Speaker 1: rocks re echoed, and the men came out again, one
• 3:41
Speaker 1: after another on the road, and declared that we were
• 3:44
Speaker 1: nowhere to be found. And just then the same whistle
• 3:48
Speaker 1: that had alarmed my mother and myself over the good
• 3:51
Speaker 1: Captain's money was once more clearly audible through the night,
• 3:56
Speaker 1: but this time twice repeated. I had thought it to
• 4:00
Speaker 1: be the blind Man's trumpet, so to speak, summoning his
• 4:04
Speaker 1: crew to the assault, But I now found that it
• 4:07
Speaker 1: was a signal from the hillside toward the hamlet, and
• 4:10
Speaker 1: from its effect upon the buccaneers, a signal to warn
• 4:13
Speaker 1: them of approaching danger. There's Dirk, again, said one twice.
• 4:19
Speaker 1: We'll have to budge mates, Budge you, skulk, cried pew.
• 4:25
Speaker 1: Dirk was a fool and a coward from the first.
• 4:29
Speaker 1: You wouldn't mind him. They must be close by, they
• 4:33
Speaker 1: can't be far. You have your hands on it, scatterer,
• 4:37
Speaker 1: and look for him, dogs or shiver my soul, he cried.
• 4:43
Speaker 1: If I had eyes. This appeal seemed to produce some effect,
• 4:49
Speaker 1: for two of the fellows began to look here and
• 4:51
Speaker 1: there among the timber, but half heartedly, I thought, and
• 4:55
Speaker 1: with half an eye to their own danger all the time,
• 4:58
Speaker 1: while the rest stood irres on the road. You have
• 5:02
Speaker 1: your hands on thousands new fools, and you hang a leg.
• 5:06
Speaker 1: You'll be as rich as kings if you could find it.
• 5:10
Speaker 1: And you stand there skulking. There wasn't one of you,
• 5:14
Speaker 1: dead face Bill, and I did it a blind man,
• 5:18
Speaker 1: and I'm to lose my chance for you. I'm to
• 5:22
Speaker 1: be a poor, crawling beggar sponging for rum when I
• 5:27
Speaker 1: might be rolling in a coach. If you had the
• 5:31
Speaker 1: pluck of a weavil in a biscuit. You would catch them. Still,
• 5:36
Speaker 1: hang it, Pew, We've got the do balloons, grumbled one.
• 5:41
Speaker 1: They might have hid the blessed thing, said another. Take
• 5:45
Speaker 1: the George's pew, and don't stand there squawling. Squawling was
• 5:50
Speaker 1: the word for it. Pew's anger rose so high at
• 5:54
Speaker 1: these objections till at last his passion completely taking the
• 5:58
Speaker 1: upper hand. He's struck at them right and left in
• 6:02
Speaker 1: his blindness, and his sticks sounded heavily on more than one. These,
• 6:07
Speaker 1: in their turn, cursed back at the blind miscreant, threatened
• 6:12
Speaker 1: him in horrid terms, and tried in vain to catch
• 6:15
Speaker 1: the stick and wrest it from his grasp. This quarrel
• 6:19
Speaker 1: was the saving of us, for while it was still raging,
• 6:23
Speaker 1: another sound came from the top of the hill on
• 6:25
Speaker 1: the side of the hamlet, the tramp of horses galloping.
• 6:29
Speaker 1: Almost at the same time, a pistol shot, flash and
• 6:33
Speaker 1: report came from the hedge side, and that was plainly
• 6:36
Speaker 1: the last signal of danger. For the buccaneers turned at
• 6:39
Speaker 1: once and ran, separating in every direction, one seaward along
• 6:44
Speaker 1: the cove, one slant across the hill, and so on,
• 6:48
Speaker 1: so that in half a minute not a sign of
• 6:51
Speaker 1: them remained, but Pew him they had deserted. Whether in
• 6:56
Speaker 1: sheer panic or out of revenge for his ill words
• 6:59
Speaker 1: and blows, I know not. But there he remained behind,
• 7:04
Speaker 1: tapping up and down the road in a frenzy and
• 7:07
Speaker 1: groping and calling for his comrades. Finally he took the
• 7:11
Speaker 1: wrong turn and ran a few steps past me towards
• 7:15
Speaker 1: the hamlet, crying Johnny, black Dog, Dirk and other names.
• 7:20
Speaker 1: You won't leave, old Pew, mate, not old Pew. Just
• 7:25
Speaker 1: then the noise of horses topped the rise, and four
• 7:28
Speaker 1: or five riders came in sight in the moonlight, and
• 7:31
Speaker 1: swept at full gallop down the slope. At this Pew
• 7:34
Speaker 1: saw his error, turned with a scream and ran straight
• 7:38
Speaker 1: for the ditch, into which he rolled. But he was
• 7:41
Speaker 1: on his feet again in a second and made another dash,
• 7:44
Speaker 1: now utterly bewildered, right under the nearest of the coming horses.
• 7:50
Speaker 1: The rider tried to save him, but in vain down
• 7:52
Speaker 1: went Pew with a cry that rang high into the night,
• 7:56
Speaker 1: and the four hoofs trampled and spurned him and passed.
• 8:01
Speaker 1: He fell on his side then gently collapsed upon his
• 8:05
Speaker 1: face and moved no more. I leaped to my feet
• 8:09
Speaker 1: and hailed the riders. They were pulling up at any rate,
• 8:12
Speaker 1: horrified at the accident, and I soon saw what they were.
• 8:17
Speaker 1: One trailing out behind the rest was a lad that
• 8:20
Speaker 1: had gone from the hamlet to doctor Livesey's. The rest
• 8:23
Speaker 1: were revenue officers, whom he had met by the way,
• 8:26
Speaker 1: and with whom he had had the intelligence to return
• 8:29
Speaker 1: at once. Some news of the lugger in Kit's hole
• 8:33
Speaker 1: had found its way to Supervisor Dance, and set him
• 8:37
Speaker 1: forth that night in our direction, And to that circumstance,
• 8:40
Speaker 1: my mother and I owed our preservation from death. Pew
• 8:45
Speaker 1: was dead, stone dead. As for my mother when we
• 8:49
Speaker 1: carried her up to the hamlet. A little cold water
• 8:52
Speaker 1: and some salts very soon brought her back again, and
• 8:55
Speaker 1: she was none the worse for her terror, though she
• 8:58
Speaker 1: still continued to deplore the balance of the money. In
• 9:01
Speaker 1: the meantime, the Supervisor rode on as fast as he
• 9:05
Speaker 1: could to Kit's hole, but his men had to dismount
• 9:08
Speaker 1: and grope down the dingle, leading and sometimes supporting their horses,
• 9:13
Speaker 1: and in continual fear of ambushes, so it was no
• 9:17
Speaker 1: great matter for surprise that when they got down to
• 9:20
Speaker 1: the hole, the lugger was already under way, though still
• 9:24
Speaker 1: close in. He hailed her. A voice replied, telling him
• 9:28
Speaker 1: to keep out of the moonlight or he would get
• 9:31
Speaker 1: some lead in him, and at the same time a
• 9:33
Speaker 1: bullet whistled close by his arm. Soon after, the lugger
• 9:38
Speaker 1: doubled the point and disappeared. Mister Dance stood there, as
• 9:42
Speaker 1: he said, like a fish out of water. And all
• 9:46
Speaker 1: he could do was to dispatch a man to bur
• 9:49
Speaker 1: to warn the cutter. And that, he said, is just
• 9:53
Speaker 1: about as good as nothing. They've got clean off. And
• 9:56
Speaker 1: there's an end only, he added, I am glad I
• 10:00
Speaker 1: trod upon Master Pew's corns. By this time he had
• 10:04
Speaker 1: heard my story. I went back with him to the
• 10:07
Speaker 1: Admiral Benbow. And you cannot imagine a house in such
• 10:10
Speaker 1: a state of smash. The very clerk had been thrown
• 10:15
Speaker 1: down by these fellows in their furious hunt after my
• 10:18
Speaker 1: mother and myself. And though nothing had actually been taken
• 10:22
Speaker 1: away except the captain's money bag and a little silver,
• 10:25
Speaker 1: from the till I could see at once that we
• 10:27
Speaker 1: were ruined. Mister Dance could make nothing of the scene.
• 10:32
Speaker 1: They got the money. You say, well, then, Hawkins, what
• 10:36
Speaker 1: in fortune were they after more money? I suppose no, certain,
• 10:41
Speaker 1: not money, I think, replied I. In fact, sir, I
• 10:45
Speaker 1: believe I have the thing in my breast pocket, and
• 10:48
Speaker 1: to tell you the truth, I should like to get
• 10:50
Speaker 1: it put in safety to be sure. Boy quite right,
• 10:54
Speaker 1: said he. I'll take it if you like. I thought,
• 10:58
Speaker 1: perhaps doctor livesey, I began, perfectly right, he interrupted, very cheerily,
• 11:05
Speaker 1: perfectly right, a gentleman and a magistrate. And now I
• 11:09
Speaker 1: come to think of it, I might as well ride
• 11:11
Speaker 1: round there myself and report to him or squire. Master
• 11:15
Speaker 1: Pew's dead when all's done. Not that I regret it,
• 11:19
Speaker 1: but he's dead, you see, and people will make it
• 11:22
Speaker 1: out against an officer of his Majesty's revenue. If make
• 11:26
Speaker 1: it out they can. Now I'll tell you, Hawkins, if
• 11:29
Speaker 1: you like, I'll take you along. I thanked him heartily
• 11:33
Speaker 1: for the offer, and we walked back to the hamlet
• 11:35
Speaker 1: where the horses were. By the time I had told
• 11:39
Speaker 1: my mother of my purpose, they were all in the saddle.
• 11:43
Speaker 1: Dogger said, mister Dance, you have a good horse. Take
• 11:47
Speaker 1: up this lad behind you as soon as I was mounted,
• 11:50
Speaker 1: holding on to Dogger's belt, the supervisor gave the word,
• 11:54
Speaker 1: and the party struck out at a bouncing trot on
• 11:56
Speaker 1: the road to doctor Livesey's house and of Chapter five,
• 12:04
Speaker 1: Chapter six the Captain's papers. We rode hard all the
• 12:10
Speaker 1: way till we drew up before Doctor Libsey's door. The
• 12:14
Speaker 1: house was all dark to the front. Mister Dance told
• 12:17
Speaker 1: me to jump down and knock, and Dogger gave me
• 12:20
Speaker 1: a stirrup to descend by. The door was opened almost
• 12:23
Speaker 1: at once by a maid. Is doctor Livesey in? I
• 12:27
Speaker 1: asked no. She said he had come home in the afternoon,
• 12:32
Speaker 1: but had gone up to the hall to dine and
• 12:34
Speaker 1: pass the evening with the squire. So there we go, boys,
• 12:39
Speaker 1: said mister Dance. This time, as the distance was short,
• 12:43
Speaker 1: I did not mount, but ran with Dogger's stirrup leather
• 12:46
Speaker 1: to the lodge gates and up the long leafless moonlit
• 12:49
Speaker 1: avenue to where the white line of the hall buildings
• 12:53
Speaker 1: looked on either hand on great old gardens. There mister
• 12:57
Speaker 1: Dance dismounted and take me along with him, was admitted
• 13:01
Speaker 1: at a word into the house. The servant led us
• 13:05
Speaker 1: down a matted passage, and showed us at the end
• 13:09
Speaker 1: into a great library, all lined with bookcases and busts
• 13:13
Speaker 1: on top of them, where the Squire and Doctor Livesey
• 13:16
Speaker 1: sat pipe in hand, on either side of a bright fire.
• 13:20
Speaker 1: I had never seen the squire so near at hand.
• 13:24
Speaker 1: He was a tall man, over six feet high, and
• 13:27
Speaker 1: broad in proportion, and he had a bluff, rough and
• 13:31
Speaker 1: ready face, all roughened and reddi and lined in his
• 13:35
Speaker 1: long travels. His eyebrows were very black and moved readily,
• 13:41
Speaker 1: and this gave him a look of some temper, not bad,
• 13:45
Speaker 1: you would say, but quick and high. Come in, mister Dance,
• 13:49
Speaker 1: said he, very stately and condescending. Good evening, Dance, said
• 13:55
Speaker 1: the doctor, with a nod. And good evening to you,
• 13:57
Speaker 1: old friend Jim. What good wit to bring jul here?
• 14:01
Speaker 1: The supervisor stood up straight and stiff, and told his
• 14:05
Speaker 1: story like a lesson. But you should have seen how
• 14:09
Speaker 1: the two gentlemen leaned forward and looked at each other,
• 14:12
Speaker 1: and forgot to smoke in their surprise and interest. When
• 14:16
Speaker 1: they heard how my mother went back to the inn.
• 14:19
Speaker 1: Doctor Livesey fair slapped his thigh, and the Squire cried
• 14:24
Speaker 1: bravel and broke his long pipe against the grate. Long
• 14:29
Speaker 1: before it was done, a mister Trelawney, that you will
• 14:32
Speaker 1: remember was the squire's name, had got up from his
• 14:35
Speaker 1: seat and was striding about the room, and the doctor,
• 14:39
Speaker 1: as if to hear the better, had taken off his
• 14:42
Speaker 1: powdered wig and sat there looking very strange, indeed with
• 14:46
Speaker 1: his own close cropped black pole. At last, mister Dance
• 14:51
Speaker 1: finished the story. Mister Dance said the squire, you are
• 14:56
Speaker 1: a very noble fellow. And as for riding down that
• 15:01
Speaker 1: black atrocious miscreant, I regard it as an act of virtue, sir,
• 15:07
Speaker 1: like stamping on a crockroach. This lad Hawkins is a trump,
• 15:11
Speaker 1: I perceive, Hawkins, will you ring that bell? Mister Dance
• 15:15
Speaker 1: must have some ale, and so Jim said the doctor.
• 15:20
Speaker 1: You have the thing that they were after. Have you
• 15:24
Speaker 1: here it is, sir, said I, and gave him the
• 15:27
Speaker 1: oilskin packet. The doctor looked it all over as if
• 15:31
Speaker 1: his fingers were itching to open it, but instead of
• 15:35
Speaker 1: doing that, he put it quietly in the pocket of
• 15:37
Speaker 1: his coat. Squire said he, when Dance has had his ale,
• 15:44
Speaker 1: he must of course be off on his Majesty's service.
• 15:48
Speaker 1: But I mean to keep Jim Hawkins here to sleep
• 15:51
Speaker 1: at my house. And with your permission, I propose we
• 15:56
Speaker 1: should have up the cold pie and let him sup
• 16:00
Speaker 1: as you will, Livesey, said the Squire. Hawkins has earned
• 16:04
Speaker 1: better than cold pie. So a big pigeon pie was
• 16:09
Speaker 1: brought in and put on a side table, and I
• 16:12
Speaker 1: made a hearty supper, for I was as hungry as
• 16:15
Speaker 1: a hawk, while mister Dance was further complimented and at
• 16:19
Speaker 1: last dismissed. And now, Squire, said the doctor. And now
• 16:27
Speaker 1: lives ere, said the Squire, in the same breath. One
• 16:31
Speaker 1: at a time, one at a time, laughed doctor Livesey.
• 16:36
Speaker 1: You have heard of this Flint, I suppose heard of him,
• 16:41
Speaker 1: cried the Squire. Heard of him? You say he was
• 16:44
Speaker 1: the bloodthirstiest buccaneer that sailed. Blackbeard was a child to Flint.
• 16:51
Speaker 1: The Spaniards were so prodigiously afraid of him, that I
• 16:54
Speaker 1: tell you, Sir, I was sometimes proud that he was
• 16:57
Speaker 1: an Englishman. I have seen his topsail with these eyes
• 17:01
Speaker 1: off Trinidad, and the cowardly son of a rum puncheon
• 17:05
Speaker 1: that I sailed with put back, put back, Sir, into
• 17:08
Speaker 1: the port of Spain. Well, I've heard of him myself
• 17:12
Speaker 1: in England, said the doctor. But the point is, had
• 17:17
Speaker 1: he money? Money? Cried the squire. Have you heard the story?
• 17:24
Speaker 1: What were these villains after but money? What did they
• 17:28
Speaker 1: care for but money? For? What would they risk their
• 17:31
Speaker 1: rascal carcasses? But money that we shall soon know, replied
• 17:38
Speaker 1: the doctor. But you are so confoundedly hot headed and
• 17:43
Speaker 1: exclamatory that I cannot get a word in. What I
• 17:47
Speaker 1: want to know is this suppose that I have here
• 17:51
Speaker 1: in my pocket some clue to where Flint buried his treasure?
• 17:57
Speaker 1: Will that treasure amount to munych a mountzer, cried the squire.
• 18:03
Speaker 1: It will amount to this. If we have the clue
• 18:07
Speaker 1: you talk about, I'll fit out a ship in Bristol
• 18:10
Speaker 1: dock and take you and Hawkins here along, and we'll
• 18:14
Speaker 1: have that treasure if I search for a year. Very well,
• 18:18
Speaker 1: said the doctor. Now, then, if Jim is agreeable, we'll
• 18:22
Speaker 1: open the packet, and he laid it before him on
• 18:26
Speaker 1: the table. The bundle was sewn together, and the doctor
• 18:30
Speaker 1: had to get out his instrument case and cut the
• 18:33
Speaker 1: stitches with his medical scissors. It contained two things, a
• 18:38
Speaker 1: book and a sealed paper. First, of all, we'll try
• 18:43
Speaker 1: the book, observed the doctor. The Squire and I were
• 18:47
Speaker 1: both peering over his shoulder as he opened it. For
• 18:50
Speaker 1: Doctor Livesey had kindly motioned to me to come round
• 18:54
Speaker 1: from the side table where I had been eating, to
• 18:57
Speaker 1: enjoy the sport of the search. On the first page
• 19:01
Speaker 1: there were only some scraps of writing, such as a
• 19:04
Speaker 1: man with a pen in his hand might make for
• 19:06
Speaker 1: idleness or practice. One was the same as the tattoo
• 19:11
Speaker 1: mark Billy Bones his fancy. Then there was mister w
• 19:17
Speaker 1: Bone's mate no more rum off, palm key he got it,
• 19:24
Speaker 1: and some other snatches, most single words and unintelligible. But
• 19:29
Speaker 1: I could not help wondering who it was that had
• 19:32
Speaker 1: got it and what it was he got a knife
• 19:37
Speaker 1: in his back. As likely as not, not much instruction there,
• 19:43
Speaker 1: said Doctor Livesey as he passed on. The next ten
• 19:47
Speaker 1: or twelve pages were filled with a curious series of entries.
• 19:51
Speaker 1: There was a date at one end of the line,
• 19:53
Speaker 1: and at the other end a sum of money, as
• 19:55
Speaker 1: in common account books, but instead of explanatory writing, only
• 20:00
Speaker 1: a varying number of crosses between the two. On the
• 20:04
Speaker 1: twelfth of June seventeen forty five. For instance, a sum
• 20:08
Speaker 1: of seventy pounds had plainly become due to someone, and
• 20:12
Speaker 1: there was nothing but six crosses to explain the cause.
• 20:17
Speaker 1: In a few cases, to be sure, the name of
• 20:19
Speaker 1: a place would be added as of off Caracas, or
• 20:24
Speaker 1: a mere entry of latitude or longitude as sixty two
• 20:28
Speaker 1: degrees seventeen minutes twenty seconds nineteen degrees two minutes forty seconds.
• 20:36
Speaker 1: The record lasted over nearly twenty years, the amount of
• 20:40
Speaker 1: the separate entries growing larger as time went on, and
• 20:44
Speaker 1: at the end a grand total had been maned out
• 20:47
Speaker 1: after five or six row editions. And these words appended
• 20:52
Speaker 1: bones his pile, iiconmic head or tail of this, said
• 20:59
Speaker 1: doctor lives. The thing is as clear as noonday, cried
• 21:03
Speaker 1: the squire. This is the black hearted hound's account book.
• 21:07
Speaker 1: These crosses stand for the names of ships or towns
• 21:11
Speaker 1: that they sank or plundered. The sums are the scoundrels share.
• 21:16
Speaker 1: And where he filled an ambiguity, you see he added
• 21:19
Speaker 1: something clearer, off Carackers. Now you see here was some
• 21:23
Speaker 1: unhappy vessel boarded off that coast. God help the poor souls.
• 21:28
Speaker 1: That man her coral long ago right, said the doctor,
• 21:34
Speaker 1: see what it is to be a traveler, right, and
• 21:37
Speaker 1: the amounts increase, you see, as he rose in rank.
• 21:41
Speaker 1: There was little else in the volume but a few
• 21:44
Speaker 1: bearings of places noted in the blank leaves towards the end,
• 21:48
Speaker 1: and a table for reducing French, English and Spanish moneys
• 21:52
Speaker 1: to a common value. Thrifty men, cried the doctor. He
• 21:57
Speaker 1: wasn't the one to be cheated, and now said the
• 22:01
Speaker 1: squire for the other. The paper had been sealed in
• 22:05
Speaker 1: several places with a thimble by way of seal, the
• 22:08
Speaker 1: very thimble, perhaps that I had found in the captain's pocket.
• 22:13
Speaker 1: The doctor opened the seals with great care, and there
• 22:16
Speaker 1: fell out the map of an island, with latitude and
• 22:19
Speaker 1: longitude soundings, names of hills and bays and inlets, and
• 22:24
Speaker 1: every particular that would be needed to bring a ship
• 22:27
Speaker 1: to a safe anchorage upon its shores. It was about
• 22:31
Speaker 1: nine miles long and file of across, shaped you might say,
• 22:35
Speaker 1: like a fat dragon standing up, and had two fine
• 22:39
Speaker 1: landlocked harbors and a hill in the center park marked
• 22:43
Speaker 1: the spyglass. There were several additions of a later date,
• 22:48
Speaker 1: but above all three crosses of red ink, two on
• 22:52
Speaker 1: the north part of the island wine in the southwest.
• 22:55
Speaker 1: And besides this last in the same red ink, and
• 22:59
Speaker 1: in a small neat hand very different from the Captain's
• 23:03
Speaker 1: tottery characters, these words bulk of treasure. Here over the
• 23:10
Speaker 1: back the same hand had written this further information tall tree,
• 23:15
Speaker 1: spyglass shoulder bearing a point to the north of nor
• 23:20
Speaker 1: Nor East Skeleton Island south south east by east ten feet.
• 23:27
Speaker 1: The bar silver is in the north Cash. You can
• 23:30
Speaker 1: find it by the trend of the east hummock ten
• 23:33
Speaker 1: fathoms south of the Black Crag with a face on it.
• 23:36
Speaker 1: The arms are easy found in the sand hill north
• 23:39
Speaker 1: point of north Inlet Cape, bearing east and a quarter
• 23:43
Speaker 1: north j f. That was all but brief as it was,
• 23:49
Speaker 1: and to me incomprehensible. It filled the Squire and doctor
• 23:53
Speaker 1: Livesey with delight. Livesey said the Squire, you will give
• 23:59
Speaker 1: up this wretched practice at once. Tomorrow I start for Bristol.
• 24:04
Speaker 1: In three weeks time. Three weeks, two weeks, ten days.
• 24:08
Speaker 1: We'll have the best ship, Sir, and the choicest crew
• 24:12
Speaker 1: in England. Hawkins shall come as cabin boy. You'll make
• 24:16
Speaker 1: a famous cabin boy, Hawkins. You'll livesey our ship's doctor.
• 24:20
Speaker 1: I am Admiral. We'll take our Redruth, Joyce and Hunter.
• 24:25
Speaker 1: We'll have favorable winds, a quick passage, and not the
• 24:29
Speaker 1: least difficulty in finding the spot, and money to eat,
• 24:32
Speaker 1: to roll in to play duck and drake with ever
• 24:36
Speaker 1: after true Lornie said the doctor. I'll go with you,
• 24:40
Speaker 1: and I'll go bail for it. So with Jim, and
• 24:44
Speaker 1: be a credit to the undertaking. There's only one man
• 24:47
Speaker 1: I'm afraid of. And who's that? Cried the squire. Name
• 24:52
Speaker 1: the dogs are you, replied the doctor, for you cannot
• 24:57
Speaker 1: hold your tongue. We are not the the only men
• 25:00
Speaker 1: who know of this paper. These fellows who attack the
• 25:03
Speaker 1: inn tonight, bold desperate blades, to be sure, and the
• 25:08
Speaker 1: rest who stayed aboard that lugger and more, I dare
• 25:11
Speaker 1: say not far off, are one and all through, thick
• 25:15
Speaker 1: and thin bound, that they will get that money. We
• 25:20
Speaker 1: must none of us go alone till we get to see.
• 25:23
Speaker 1: Jim and I shall stick together in the meantime, and
• 25:26
Speaker 1: you'll take Joyce and Hunter when you ride to Bristol.
• 25:29
Speaker 1: And from first to last, not one of us must
• 25:33
Speaker 1: breathe our word of what we've found Livesey returned the Squire.
• 25:40
Speaker 1: You are always in the right of it. I'll be
• 25:42
Speaker 1: silent as the grave. End of Chapter six
