- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 15th of
- 0:17October, and you have tapped on play so that you and I can
- 0:21continue reading through this dense chock a block full of
- 0:27goodness Book of the Bible. Man, I don't know about you, but
- 0:31there is just so much like every 3rd sentence is one that is on a
- 0:35million screen savers and fridge magnets.
- 0:38You know, they are these, these powerful truths distilled so
- 0:43beautifully by Paul and it's just like wall to wall.
- 0:48Best of the greatest hits, right?
- 0:51So I don't know about you, but I feel like I'm, I'm having to go
- 0:53back and reread some of these passages just just to give them
- 0:57the space to breathe, right? There's just so much in them.
- 1:01This is all such good news for us as followers of Jesus.
- 1:04So I'd encourage you to, after we read it all together in one
- 1:09big block, I'd encourage you to go back and just pick out bits
- 1:13and pour over them and wow, let this truth seep into your life.
- 1:18Incredible, amazing stuff. But enough about me rabbiting on
- 1:23about it. Let's read more, shall we?
- 1:25Let us crack open the book of Romans and see what more God has
- 1:30to share with us today as we read together.
- 1:33Romans Chapter 9. With Christ as my witness, I
- 1:48speak with utter truthfulness. My conscience and the Holy
- 1:52Spirit confirm it. My heart is filled with bitter
- 1:56sorrow and unending grief for my people, my Jewish brothers and
- 2:00sisters. I would be willing to be forever
- 2:03cursed, cut off from Christ, if that would save them.
- 2:07They are the people of Israel, chosen to be God's adopted
- 2:11children. God revealed His glory to them.
- 2:16He made covenants with them and gave them His law.
- 2:19He gave them the privilege of worshipping Him and receiving
- 2:22His wonderful promises. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are
- 2:26their ancestors, and Christ himself was an Israelite as far
- 2:30as His human nature is concerned.
- 2:32And He is God, the one who rules over everything and is worthy of
- 2:37eternal praise. Amen.
- 2:41Well then, has God failed to fulfil His promise to Israel?
- 2:45No, for not all who are born into the nation of Israel are
- 2:50truly members of God's people. Being descendants of Abraham
- 2:54doesn't make them truly Abraham's children, for the
- 2:57scriptures say Isaac is the son through whom your descendants
- 3:01will be counted though Abraham and other children too.
- 3:05This means that Abraham's physical descendants are not
- 3:09necessarily children of God. Only the children of the promise
- 3:14are considered to be Abraham's children, for God had promised,
- 3:18I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a
- 3:22son. This son was our ancestor Isaac.
- 3:27When he married Rebecca, she gave birth to twins, but before
- 3:31they were born, before they had done anything good or bad, she
- 3:35received a message from God. This message shows that God
- 3:40chooses people according to His own purposes.
- 3:43He calls people, but not according to their good or bad
- 3:47works. She was told.
- 3:49Your older son will serve your younger son in the words of the
- 3:54Scriptures. I loved Jacob, but I rejected
- 3:58Esau. Are we saying then that God was
- 4:01unfair? Of course not, for God said to
- 4:04Moses, I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show
- 4:09compassion to anyone I choose. So it is God who decides to show
- 4:15mercy. We can neither choose it nor
- 4:18work for it. For the scriptures say that God
- 4:22told Pharaoh, I have appointed you for this very purpose of
- 4:27displaying my power in you and to spread my fame throughout the
- 4:31earth. So you see, God chooses to show
- 4:36mercy to some, and he chooses to harden the hearts of others so
- 4:40they refuse to listen. Well then you might say, why
- 4:45does God blame people for not responding?
- 4:48Haven't they simply done what he makes them do?
- 4:51No, don't say that. Who are you, a mere human being,
- 4:54to argue with God? Should the thing that was
- 4:57created say to the one who created it?
- 5:00Why have you made me like this? When a Potter makes jars out of
- 5:04clay, doesn't he have the right to use the same lump of clay to
- 5:08make one jar for decoration and another to throw garbage into?
- 5:13In the same way, even though God has the right to show His anger
- 5:16and His power, He is very patient with those on whom His
- 5:21anger falls who are destined for destruction.
- 5:25He does this to make the riches of His glory shine even brighter
- 5:30on those to whom He shows mercy, who are prepared in advance for
- 5:34glory. And we are among those whom he
- 5:38selected both from the Jews and from the Gentiles.
- 5:42Concerning the Gentiles, God says in the prophecy of Hosea,
- 5:47Those who are not my people I will now call my people, and I
- 5:52will love those whom I did not love before.
- 5:57And then at the place where they were told, You are not my
- 6:02people, there they will be called children of the living
- 6:06God. And concerning Israel, Isaiah
- 6:11the prophet cried out, though the people of Israel are as
- 6:15numerous as the sand of the seashore, only a remnant will be
- 6:19saved, for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth
- 6:24quickly and with finality. And as I said the same thing in
- 6:29another place, if the Lord of Heaven's armies had not spared a
- 6:34few of our children, we would have been wiped out like Sodom,
- 6:38destroyed like Gomorrah. What does all this mean?
- 6:45Even though the Gentiles were not trying to follow God's
- 6:48standards, they were made right with God.
- 6:52And it was by faith that this took place.
- 6:55But the people of Israel, who tried so hard to get right with
- 6:59God by keeping the law, never succeeded.
- 7:02Why not? Because they were trying to get
- 7:05right with God by keeping the law instead of by trusting in
- 7:09Him. They stumbled over the great
- 7:11rock in their path. God warned them of this in the
- 7:15scripture when he said, I am placing a stone in Jerusalem
- 7:20that makes people stumble, a rock that makes them fall.
- 7:24But anyone who trusts in Him will never be disgraced.
- 7:39Oh Father, we come before you and we just praise you, because
- 7:44what are the possible reaction or response could we bring?
- 7:49You are the eternal, Almighty God of the universe, and
- 7:54although we grapple with these theological concepts to try to
- 7:59understand You, Lord, we never will because you are God and we
- 8:04are not. So as we come to you, Lord, I
- 8:08pray that you continually shape our hearts in a posture of
- 8:13praise and a posture of worship. And even though you come to us
- 8:19as friend and you invite us to be your children, may we never
- 8:26forget that as well as friend and Father, You are mighty God.
- 8:32So when things don't make sense and we just can't quite
- 8:35understand why you would do what we do, just help us surrender to
- 8:40you as our Maker and trust and the knowledge that you are good.
- 8:48And everything you do, you do for your expressed purpose,
- 8:54which includes love for us that is beyond our understanding.
- 9:00So we submit ourselves to you, our wonderful God, our mighty
- 9:04King, and our generous Saviour, and we pray this in your name,
- 9:10Jesus, Amen.
