Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: A Rising Tide Lifts All Ships
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Abadi here, you are listening to five
- 0:24Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle. That's how I feel, you know,
- 0:31Speaker 1: I have been on a whirlwind of travel over the
- 0:36Speaker 1: last two quarters. Honestly, Q one was crazy. Q two
- 0:42Speaker 1: is about halfway done now and I am sitting in
- 0:46Speaker 1: my Los Angeles hotel room as I record this, and
- 0:50Speaker 1: it feels a little surreal that this is the end
- 0:54Speaker 1: of that for now. At this point in time, I
- 0:58Speaker 1: don't have anything else lined up for the summer until
- 1:02Speaker 1: really August, and that does not mean that nothing will happen.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I am sure things are about to pop up, but
- 1:10Speaker 1: in the meantime, I'm feeling a little nostalgic about everything
- 1:13Speaker 1: that has happened La Paris, Boston, Miami, back to La.
- 1:22Speaker 1: It has been the craziest few weeks. So much of
- 1:27Speaker 1: the last few weeks I've been so grateful for, and specifically,
- 1:29Speaker 1: what I want to talk about in this five Minute
- 1:31Speaker 1: Friday is the concept that rising tides raise all ships.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And I have always been the kind of person that
- 1:40Speaker 1: firmly believes that we have an opportunity to cheer on
- 1:43Speaker 1: other people. There's nothing I get more pleasure out of
- 1:49Speaker 1: than being excited for people that matter to me, for
- 1:54Speaker 1: people that I am so honored to be their cheerleader.
- 1:58Speaker 1: And tonight I had the opportunity to get together with
- 2:01Speaker 1: another podcaster. Her name is Les Alfred. You've heard her
- 2:05Speaker 1: on the show before. She has a podcast called Balanced
- 2:07Speaker 1: Black Girl, And it was so special for me because
- 2:11Speaker 1: someone asked me earlier this week if I keep in
- 2:16Speaker 1: contact talk with often other podcasters, and the answer is
- 2:20Speaker 1: to be candid, not really as a and I've said
- 2:23Speaker 1: this before solopreneur, sometimes what I'm doing can be a
- 2:26Speaker 1: bit lonely, and I think that is why I really
- 2:29Speaker 1: do enjoy the opportunity to host live events, because in
- 2:33Speaker 1: hosting live events, I then have the chance to connect
- 2:37Speaker 1: irl with others, especially after the pandemic, that feels even
- 2:41Speaker 1: more special than ever. And so tonight, sitting with less
- 2:44Speaker 1: and talking about so many of the different scenarios that
- 2:48Speaker 1: another podcaster would actually understand, it felt so comforting, and
- 2:53Speaker 1: it felt it truly made me feel less alone. And
- 2:58Speaker 1: so the reason I share this with you, the reason
- 3:01Speaker 1: I'm talking about this today is that I think it
- 3:04Speaker 1: can be a little bit of human nature to maybe
- 3:08Speaker 1: not be so open to embracing others that are in
- 3:13Speaker 1: your space. You know, I think that I hear frequently
- 3:19Speaker 1: the topic of competitiveness and the topic of wanting to
- 3:26Speaker 1: protect whatever it is that you're working on, not to
- 3:29Speaker 1: let everyone in on your secrets. But there is so
- 3:32Speaker 1: much freedom in opening up about what it is that
- 3:36Speaker 1: you're going through and finding someone who can understand your
- 3:40Speaker 1: shared experience and being open and vulnerable about that. And
- 3:44Speaker 1: I was reminded of that tonight as I had the
- 3:46Speaker 1: opportunity to talk to someone about some of the things
- 3:49Speaker 1: that I'm going through that really only she can understand,
- 3:53Speaker 1: at least in this moment. Right not to say that
- 3:55Speaker 1: there aren't other individuals that do what I do that
- 3:58Speaker 1: I could have similar conversation with, but in this moment,
- 4:02Speaker 1: specifically after the week that I have had for many
- 4:05Speaker 1: reasons I won't get into now, I feel grateful to
- 4:08Speaker 1: be able just to talk about what's up. There are
- 4:13Speaker 1: so many times in our lives that we do feel alone,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and there are so many times in life where coming
- 4:20Speaker 1: to terms with the fact that that is not the
- 4:22Speaker 1: case at all, that your experience is not completely unique,
- 4:26Speaker 1: that someone understands where you are coming from. What a
- 4:29Speaker 1: privilege that is. And so I go back to that saying,
- 4:33Speaker 1: a rising tide raises all ships. I don't even know
- 4:37Speaker 1: if that's the exact saying, but you know what I'm
- 4:39Speaker 1: getting at. Be open to that, Be open to the
- 4:43Speaker 1: fact that there are people that share your experience, and
- 4:46Speaker 1: together you are better than you may be alone. Together
- 4:51Speaker 1: you can overcome whatever it is that is ailing you,
- 4:54Speaker 1: whatever it is that makes you feel some kind of way. Together,
- 5:01Speaker 1: you're better. And so my question for you on this
- 5:04Speaker 1: specific five minute Friday, who can you reach out to
- 5:09Speaker 1: you right now that may make you feel less alone
- 5:11Speaker 1: in whatever experience it is that you are going through
- 5:14Speaker 1: at this moment, and maybe ask yourself why have you
- 5:19Speaker 1: been holding out on reaching out? Who can you reach
- 5:24Speaker 1: out to you in this moment that will understand a
- 5:27Speaker 1: unique experience that you are going through and why have
- 5:32Speaker 1: you perhaps held off thus far on reaching out? And
- 5:37Speaker 1: now a listener question. Hey, Emily, I'm running the Brooklyn
- 5:42Speaker 1: Half Marathon this weekend for the first time. Given you've
- 5:46Speaker 1: run so many races, what advice would you give yourself?
- 5:49Speaker 1: Knowing what you know now? I love it. I know
- 5:53Speaker 1: who this question is from. I'm not going to blow
- 5:55Speaker 1: up your spot, but I am so excited for what
- 5:57Speaker 1: you are about to undertake. And to be frank, my
- 6:01Speaker 1: biggest piece of advice for anyone who is conquering their
- 6:04Speaker 1: first half marathon. Maybe you're listening to this and you
- 6:07Speaker 1: have a five k on your radar, whatever distance, marathon, mile,
- 6:13Speaker 1: eight hundred meters, running for one minute, whatever it is,
- 6:17Speaker 1: whatever is on your radar, I want you to know
- 6:20Speaker 1: that my biggest tip is to just enjoy it. I
- 6:28Speaker 1: didn't go into my first half marathon with any sort
- 6:32Speaker 1: of goal whatsoever, and it was the best thing I
- 6:35Speaker 1: could have, unknowingly ever done for myself because my simple
- 6:40Speaker 1: goal in that race on that day was to finish
- 6:46Speaker 1: what I started. To finish the thing that I had
- 6:49Speaker 1: just dedicated my time and my effort to over the
- 6:54Speaker 1: past let's say, twelve to fourteen weeks. You have put
- 6:59Speaker 1: in so much effort, and that effort deserves to be
- 7:01Speaker 1: celebrated no matter what happens on that day, right because
- 7:06Speaker 1: the joy is within the journey, and if you don't
- 7:10Speaker 1: enjoy the journey, what is the point. So again, my
- 7:16Speaker 1: advice today is to have a good time, be proud
- 7:20Speaker 1: of you, relish in this accomplishment and know that regardless
- 7:25Speaker 1: of how the race ends up, you need to be
- 7:29Speaker 1: proud of you for stepping outside of your comfort zone
- 7:31Speaker 1: and giving back to yourself for investing in yourself in
- 7:35Speaker 1: the first place. Make sure you are following along on
