- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I am Mike di Giovanni, former La Times baseball writer
- 0:14Speaker 1: and host of the show, joined by Mark Trumbo, our
- 0:17Speaker 1: usual co host, and the former Angel slutter. Mark, how
- 0:20Speaker 1: you doing today?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Well, as we're recording right after whatever, that was. What
- 0:28Speaker 2: an interesting ballgame. And for the Angels fans, as you referenced,
- 0:33Speaker 2: I can't see too many of them that are thrilled
- 0:36Speaker 2: with what took place.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Wow, Angels bad enough losing those first two games and
- 0:42Speaker 1: getting blown out Saturday night with a position player finishing
- 0:45Speaker 1: the game on the mound. Sunday for the second time
- 0:48Speaker 1: this year. They blow an early six run lead, it
- 0:51Speaker 1: was six to nothing, and then Joe Kaglinon HiT's a
- 0:55Speaker 1: two run homer in the ninth inning to tie it up,
- 0:58Speaker 1: sending it too extras. Angel score a run on the
- 1:01Speaker 1: pass ball, and then Lane Thomas with a three run
- 1:04Speaker 1: home run off just recalled left handed Joey Lucasey. What
- 1:10Speaker 1: a loss? I mean, I know it's early, Mark, and
- 1:12Speaker 1: this team has shown some resilience, resiliency we saw in
- 1:17Speaker 1: New York. After those two tough losses. I came back
- 1:19Speaker 1: and won a couple of games, but man, how do
- 1:22Speaker 1: you recover off a game like this and with their
- 1:24Speaker 1: bullpen basically in shambles.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Your guess is as good as mine. I think you
- 1:31Speaker 2: say all the right things. I'm assuming the postgame quotes
- 1:35Speaker 2: will be the usual turn the page, tough one, YadA, YadA.
- 1:40Speaker 2: But that's from what so the previous game another short start.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I think you've heard me say it before. Young Urania
- 1:51Speaker 2: was unable to even get through four innings, leading to
- 1:54Speaker 2: the bullpen being taxed there and then today it was
- 1:58Speaker 2: with the multiple weather delay and everything else, the thin
- 2:04Speaker 2: depth was exposed big time.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and I don't I'm guessing Chase Silseith wasn't available
- 2:12Speaker 1: today because of all he's pitched over the last few days.
- 2:15Speaker 1: But yeah, the closer situation, I don't know. This team
- 2:20Speaker 1: obviously doesn't have a closer. The big move Sunday. If
- 2:24Speaker 1: he weren't aware before the game, well I guess he
- 2:30Speaker 1: was the closer. Jordan Romano was designated for Simon after
- 2:35Speaker 1: throwing up thirty six pitches and Saturday night's game and
- 2:40Speaker 1: you know, couldn't even finish the last inning he was
- 2:42Speaker 1: in and they had to bring in Adam Fraser to
- 2:45Speaker 1: the mound. Logan Happy of course left wrist fracture. Tough
- 2:50Speaker 1: break for him. But this bullpen, Mark, I mean, I
- 2:54Speaker 1: don't even know where you go from here, not that
- 2:57Speaker 1: you even need to designate a closer. They just need
- 2:59Speaker 1: some people to get some outs late in the game.
- 3:02Speaker 1: And I know there Kurt was really handcuffed today. You know,
- 3:07Speaker 1: he had suitor in there and really high leverage situations
- 3:11Speaker 1: got to go to LUKESI who just got called up
- 3:14Speaker 1: with the game on the line, and the tenth any
- 3:18Speaker 1: options that you can see right now, they're even remotely attractive.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Kirby Yates was lit up again in his second Triple
- 3:26Speaker 1: A appearance Ben Joyce, And you know what's what's a
- 3:30Speaker 1: great closer gonna What a difference is he going to make?
- 3:33Speaker 1: Even if he comes back, but he's going to face
- 3:36Speaker 1: hitters on Monday. Where do you go with this bullpen?
- 3:39Speaker 1: Right now? What do you do if you're paramin Asian,
- 3:42Speaker 1: What do you do if you're Kurt Suzuki, if you're Perry?
- 3:47Speaker 2: This is what unless the usual rhetoric if he was
- 3:53Speaker 2: that handcuffed. But that's two million dollars to Romano. That
- 3:56Speaker 2: is down the drain in short order. Maybe he is
- 3:59Speaker 2: a guy that will stay in the organization, but it
- 4:03Speaker 2: was a quick hook for him. He did struggle, but
- 4:07Speaker 2: it seemed like that his leash was much shorter than
- 4:10Speaker 2: I would have expected this team, despite in spring that
- 4:14Speaker 2: they said that they internally had a lot of optimism.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I'm not you know, we'll say that, Okay, fine, that's
- 4:22Speaker 2: your thoughts, and that's what I've said it before. That
- 4:24Speaker 2: should be their thoughts. But I'm wondering why they were
- 4:27Speaker 2: so quick to if something stood out, if there was
- 4:31Speaker 2: some issue. Ronando didn't look very pleased when he was
- 4:33Speaker 2: taken out yesterday. Looked like, I don't know what he said.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I could be misreading it, but I mean he did
- 4:40Speaker 2: get shelled and had a rough outing, so that could
- 4:42Speaker 2: be part of it too. Fraser I first ever appearance
- 4:45Speaker 2: on the mound. I'm sure maybe it was a little
- 4:47Speaker 2: bit of fun, but there's nothing really fun about just
- 4:50Speaker 2: getting drug around the field. I think that his numbers
- 4:55Speaker 2: aren't great, but Sandlin probably is the guy I would
- 4:58Speaker 2: turn to personally. I don't know, Kurtz. Here's the thing
- 5:02Speaker 2: about managing, and I've always heard this, the best managers
- 5:06Speaker 2: managed the bullpens the most effectively. Bruce Bochi was well
- 5:09Speaker 2: known for it. Buck Showalter, when he had the tools
- 5:13Speaker 2: to do it, was great at it too. But if
- 5:16Speaker 2: you're handcuffed and Lukes was an interesting one with Furman
- 5:21Speaker 2: out there as well. Furman, it does strike out more
- 5:24Speaker 2: hitters those extra inning games. Strikeouts are very effective, and
- 5:30Speaker 2: you know, it was just one of those things. The
- 5:32Speaker 2: Royals catcher young kid names come as a carter I
- 5:38Speaker 2: can't recall, but he really he's got a ways to go.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I think he was the one that slept in through
- 5:44Speaker 2: through a game recently too. So the Angels, you know,
- 5:47Speaker 2: and they got off to a great start, so what's
- 5:48Speaker 2: really crushing is the early offense and then it became stagnant.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Logo made it through six and a third battle. The
- 5:56Speaker 2: stat line was not good, but he did give him
- 5:58Speaker 2: depth and their bull and you know, the Angels had
- 6:01Speaker 2: to face some of their better guys later.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah. The Angels also had leadoff doubles in the fourth
- 6:05Speaker 1: and sixth inning and didn't cash in on them. So
- 6:08Speaker 1: even though they haven't the lead at that point, you
- 6:10Speaker 1: got a tack on on this game, and you know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: getting back for Mano and I posted on X about this,
- 6:18Speaker 1: I mean three weeks ago. This guy was a team's closer.
- 6:22Speaker 1: You know, four for four at his first save opportunities,
- 6:24Speaker 1: didn't give up a run in his first six games,
- 6:27Speaker 1: five innings, four saves, next five games, nine earned runs
- 6:31Speaker 1: in three innings and two losses, two blown saves. Now,
- 6:36Speaker 1: I'm not so much questioning the move. You can certainly
- 6:38Speaker 1: see why he got DF eight. And you know, knowing
- 6:42Speaker 1: the Angels are knowing baseball, good chance he's not picked up.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Who knows, Maybe he comes back to the organization and
- 6:48Speaker 1: takes a demotion in the minor leagues. And I'm not
- 6:51Speaker 1: sure you know that conversation you reference on the mound,
- 6:53Speaker 1: I'm not sure it rose to the level of John
- 6:55Speaker 1: Boy treatment, but we sure shere shere would love a
- 6:59Speaker 1: few lip readers in that situation. But yeah, he very
- 7:02Speaker 1: strange conversation for a guy who threw what thirty six
- 7:05Speaker 1: pitches and couldn't even get out of the inning and
- 7:07Speaker 1: a blowout, So that was very strange. But yeah, why
- 7:11Speaker 1: didn't you know they invested two million in this guy?
- 7:13Speaker 1: Why not at least knock him down to you know,
- 7:16Speaker 1: a mop up roll or if you like this guy
- 7:19Speaker 1: well enough to give him two million dollars over the winner,
- 7:24Speaker 1: why such a quick hook. I didn't understand that personally.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I wish you were you were there on the beat
- 7:29Speaker 1: to ask that question. I'm not sure that we're at
- 7:32Speaker 1: least through the normal channel is going to get an explanation,
- 7:36Speaker 1: but I think there there should be one because it
- 7:38Speaker 1: doesn't make a ton of sense unless the stuff in
- 7:41Speaker 1: the advanced analytics pointed to serious.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Regression or But there were times early and early being
- 7:50Speaker 2: a week ago, that Renando actually looked quite sharp. He
- 7:52Speaker 2: was missing dats, he was throwing downhill firm ninety five
- 7:55Speaker 2: with a nice slider off of that, and then it
- 7:58Speaker 2: spiraled and a lot of traffic on the bases like
- 8:01Speaker 2: we see early before the season started. That was one
- 8:04Speaker 2: of the scouting reports was a lot of runners tend
- 8:07Speaker 2: to get on base. He's kind of one of those closers,
- 8:08Speaker 2: the heart attack style closers that you know it's tough.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Ken Lee is sorely missed. He's not off to the
- 8:16Speaker 2: greatest start. I don't believe this year, but he really
- 8:19Speaker 2: helped last year. There was no question who the closer
- 8:22Speaker 2: was there, and even on mediocre clubs. A nice closer
- 8:26Speaker 2: really helps a defined closer. The closer by committees, those teams,
- 8:31Speaker 2: you don't usually see them when it matters later on
- 8:34Speaker 2: in the postseason.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Yeah, to me, this move, this DFA with Romano, it
- 8:39Speaker 1: just it speaks to the failures of the front office
- 8:42Speaker 1: once again and Perim Andesium the general manager just does
- 8:45Speaker 1: not seem to have any aptitude or touch to build
- 8:49Speaker 1: a bullpen. And we know the law was made out
- 8:52Speaker 1: of these reclamation projects and you know, low risk, you know,
- 8:58Speaker 1: high reward, but this is you know, so far these guys.
- 9:02Speaker 1: You got Jordan Romano, Dfaid Kirbyates who they actually gave
- 9:05Speaker 1: five million two. Not sure what you're gonna get out
- 9:08Speaker 1: of him, Alec Manoa you gave I think two million two.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I don't think we're gonna get anything out of him.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And Drew Palmeran's another left. You look good early, Gonna
- 9:20Speaker 1: not gonna lie. He's looked very uh, he has not
- 9:22Speaker 1: looked good at all lately. So the bullpen is just
- 9:26Speaker 1: an absolute disaster area right now. And on that we're
- 9:30Speaker 1: going to take a quick break to hear a word

- 10:38Speaker 1: And Welcome back to Halo territory. I am Mike d Giovanno.
- 10:42Speaker 1: With Mark Trumbo and Mark we mentioned Logan Ohapi a
- 10:46Speaker 1: tough break. Key did seem to be coming a little
- 10:51Speaker 1: out of his offensive show with a couple of hits
- 10:53Speaker 1: last week throughout two guys trying to steal the other night,
- 10:56Speaker 1: including Bobby Wood Jr. And that's certainly not easy. Took
- 11:01Speaker 1: a foul ball off his left wrist his glove hand
- 11:06Speaker 1: and ends up fracturing a small bone on the wriste
- 11:09Speaker 1: He's put on the injured list on Sunday, no timetable
- 11:13Speaker 1: for his return. I guess one question that I think
- 11:17Speaker 1: we both have is what was he doing in the
- 11:19Speaker 1: game at that point. I think it was a seventh
- 11:21Speaker 1: inning and then already was a pretty lopsided score and
- 11:26Speaker 1: he's still in the game eight to one.
- 11:29Speaker 2: I think that well, one of two things. Either you
- 11:34Speaker 2: don't have well, it's not even I'm gonna stop saying,
- 11:38Speaker 2: well if I can, if I can help it. But
- 11:41Speaker 2: I think that the real thing is and I wonder
- 11:44Speaker 2: if Suzuki is really looking after Darnault as a former
- 11:47Speaker 2: catcher himself who had a career that he played for
- 11:51Speaker 2: a long time, so he also knows what it's like
- 11:54Speaker 2: to be on the older side of things as the backup,
- 11:57Speaker 2: and I think coming into games is probably not everyone's
- 12:02Speaker 2: favorite things. If you have a catcher on the younger
- 12:05Speaker 2: side or in their late twenties, it's probably not a
- 12:08Speaker 2: big deal, especially if they're a well defined backup catcher
- 12:11Speaker 2: that is light with the bat and they're expected to
- 12:14Speaker 2: do these things. So one thing I wonder those types
- 12:17Speaker 2: of games is Kurt maybe looking out for Darnault. And unfortunately,
- 12:23Speaker 2: at this point in Darnault's career he is a backup. Well,
- 12:27Speaker 2: he's going to be the starter now. I don't know
- 12:29Speaker 2: how they're going to split this up. I haven't seen
- 12:31Speaker 2: enough of is it Rivera Rovero?
- 12:33Speaker 1: Yeah, Sebashi and Rovero pretty good glove first catcher, has
- 12:38Speaker 1: a little big league time, knows his way around the
- 12:41Speaker 1: pitching staff. I'm not sure he's going to be a
- 12:44Speaker 1: liability defensively, but he brings almost nothing with the bat.
- 12:49Speaker 1: And Darnault, I mean he's thirty seven years old. I
- 12:52Speaker 1: mean he's not going to catch every day. I'd be
- 12:54Speaker 1: surprised if he catches more than three times a week.
- 12:57Speaker 1: We did see him with a couple of big hits
- 12:59Speaker 1: last year. I think he has a little ability with
- 13:01Speaker 1: the bat, certainly more than Rivero, but not as much
- 13:04Speaker 1: potential as a hobby of course. So to me, it's
- 13:08Speaker 1: just another position where you've not that it was a
- 13:11Speaker 1: position of strength, but it's become a position of weakness now.
- 13:15Speaker 1: And you know, the Angel offense for all, for as
- 13:19Speaker 1: bad as they've been playing, you know, they lost seven
- 13:21Speaker 1: eight games. They're twelve and seventeen right now, already three
- 13:25Speaker 1: and a half games back to the Athletics, but they
- 13:27Speaker 1: scored nine runs on sixteen hits in Sunday's game. I mean,
- 13:32Speaker 1: you can almost argue that the offense is kind of
- 13:34Speaker 1: doing its job, And to me that maybe adds a
- 13:38Speaker 1: little or a lot potentially to the frustration. I don't know, Mark,
- 13:41Speaker 1: you've probably been on a couple teams that slugged away
- 13:44Speaker 1: around the ballyard and the pitching was giving it up.
- 13:47Speaker 1: How tough it is it when you know, I mean,
- 13:49Speaker 1: the bullpen, as we've said, is just really a disaster
- 13:52Speaker 1: right now. I mean, when they go to their bullpen
- 13:56Speaker 1: and you're leading by two or three in the seventh inning,
- 13:58Speaker 1: is there that just failistic? Oh?
- 14:01Speaker 2: No, here we go again, feeling in the dugout. Hold
- 14:04Speaker 2: on to your hats. I think that you've seen it.
- 14:08Speaker 2: You've covered more than enough baseball to know that when
- 14:11Speaker 2: you don't have an above average bullpen with some capable
- 14:15Speaker 2: guys in the high leverage innans, it could go. Hopefully
- 14:21Speaker 2: they're able to hang on. Usually it does get interesting
- 14:24Speaker 2: at best, and you're going to need to probably turn.
- 14:28Speaker 2: One thing that happens a lot too, is you're going
- 14:30Speaker 2: to have to get some extra outs out of your
- 14:33Speaker 2: best pitcher. Whoever they choose that to be, will have
- 14:36Speaker 2: to come in earlier. They don't have the luxury of
- 14:38Speaker 2: having multiple guys to mix and match. Although sil Seth
- 14:42Speaker 2: and Bachman, two guys that we've covered to me, are
- 14:44Speaker 2: still looking very solid. I think Sanlan will we'll get
- 14:48Speaker 2: it together a bit. But beyond that, that suitor has
- 14:51Speaker 2: done a good job too. He might be the closer
- 14:55Speaker 2: from moving forward. Somehow he's got a bunch of maybe
- 14:58Speaker 2: someone that's smarter than me in the comments and can
- 15:00Speaker 2: tell me how he's accounted for all those defensive runs
- 15:02Speaker 2: saved that I keep seeing three or four of them
- 15:05Speaker 2: this year. I don't know where those happened. Or how
- 15:08Speaker 2: but they keep throwing these stats out a couple other
- 15:12Speaker 2: areas too. Low came out of this game with some
- 15:15Speaker 2: sort of what looked like a catholic and he's been playing.
- 15:22Speaker 2: We've given him a lot of I don't know, least
- 15:25Speaker 2: grace whatever. He's got the person no by by the
- 15:28Speaker 2: personal stuff, and I think that's understandable. At some point.
- 15:32Speaker 2: It does get crunch time somewhat, but he's if he's
- 15:37Speaker 2: another guy that's injured too, they're going to have to Tiodosio.
- 15:40Speaker 2: They don't seem to have any faith in the in
- 15:42Speaker 2: the stick. He challenged late in the game today. That
- 15:47Speaker 2: was ill advised as well. I think he's still really
- 15:50Speaker 2: learning mechanically. His swing has a ways to go. He
- 15:53Speaker 2: doesn't have a lot of length in the hitting zone.
- 15:55Speaker 2: On another episode, if people want to hear about it,
- 15:57Speaker 2: I can get into that a little more. But I
- 16:00Speaker 2: mean it matters because even in the broadcast you were
- 16:03Speaker 2: hearing things like get a you know, even bunting, sack bunting,
- 16:08Speaker 2: those types of things, and that's what you say with
- 16:11Speaker 2: a guy that But he has gotten a couple of
- 16:13Speaker 2: hits recently. He's got the wheels. He plays the nice defense,
- 16:15Speaker 2: but I don't know if they're gonna put Fraser in
- 16:17Speaker 2: left field. I don't know if they're gonna have the well,
- 16:21Speaker 2: maybe they're gonna lean on Solaire again to play more outfield,
- 16:25Speaker 2: which we've talked about is not great as far as depth.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Jose Siri had five strikeouts today for Salt Lake for
- 16:32Speaker 2: five with five and Nelson Rada is holding his own.
- 16:36Speaker 2: He looks all right, so maybe maybe look to those
- 16:38Speaker 2: guys as some depth there if low does have to
- 16:42Speaker 2: miss time, but he doesn't really look right yet. Another
- 16:45Speaker 2: guy is Nolan Shanowell. That balky ankle. It looked like
- 16:50Speaker 2: he was favoring it at times. He's not making a
- 16:53Speaker 2: ton of hard contact. First pitch him and at bat
- 16:56Speaker 2: earlier he did get the runner over and maybe on
- 16:59Speaker 2: the those are high fives. That was not really a
- 17:02Speaker 2: great at that swunging to pitch outside the strike zone
- 17:04Speaker 2: and just smothered it to the second basement. And with
- 17:07Speaker 2: no outs, you probably want to do a little more
- 17:09Speaker 2: than that. So the marrias of interesting.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Yeah, the ankle injury was just sort of came to
- 17:16Speaker 1: light a few days ago with several reports it was
- 17:21Speaker 1: his back ankle, it's his left ankle, and he made
- 17:24Speaker 1: a pretty injury or not, it's a pretty sizable adjustment
- 17:30Speaker 1: in the middle of a season where he scrapped a
- 17:32Speaker 1: pretty high leg kick for a toe tap, and he
- 17:35Speaker 1: did hit a home run. He got a couple of
- 17:38Speaker 1: knocks with it, but those aren't things you did just
- 17:41Speaker 1: do normally in the middle of a season. What kind
- 17:44Speaker 1: of you know, what guys make that kind of adjustment
- 17:46Speaker 1: because of an injury, And what's going to happen when
- 17:49Speaker 1: the ankle's better. Did you find that whole you know,
- 17:52Speaker 1: transition to be a little odd mark.
- 17:56Speaker 2: I'm not really seeing a toe tap, if I'm being honest,
- 17:59Speaker 2: not a and it was something I did too in
- 18:02Speaker 2: my career. But if you were to go through the
- 18:05Speaker 2: archives and find some of the footage, it was toe
- 18:08Speaker 2: tap is usually pretty well defined, and I'm not really
- 18:11Speaker 2: I'm just seeing a shorter stride and a lot of swings.
- 18:16Speaker 2: He's notorious for fouling a lot of balls off that
- 18:19Speaker 2: right leg, and I'm seeing that creeping in again. It
- 18:23Speaker 2: looks like he's taken some shots trying to drive it,
- 18:26Speaker 2: and then in the next pitch he'll entirely shift and
- 18:29Speaker 2: go the other way, which tends to he gets more
- 18:31Speaker 2: hits like that, but way too many ground balls. Still,
- 18:35Speaker 2: he's a guy that we'll have to see. He's not
- 18:40Speaker 2: off to the greatest start, and he's already got really
- 18:43Speaker 2: as we covered and Sam talked about the on base
- 18:45Speaker 2: percentages his calling card. He was dropped in the order
- 18:48Speaker 2: today as well, which I found to be intrigued in
- 18:50Speaker 2: Mancotta hitting third, Nolan hitting fifth against a right hitded pitcher.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Yeah, we're taking another quick break to hear a word
- 18:57Speaker 1: from our sponsors, and we'll be right back with more

- 19:22Speaker 4: the best tickets, best spots, best places to go seat.

- 19:59Speaker 3: you to see Geek MLB's official ticket marketplace, and.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Welcome back to Halo Territory. I'm Mike di Giovanno with
- 20:08Speaker 1: Mark Trumbo. Mark, you mentioned Tiodosio, and there's a kind
- 20:12Speaker 1: of a strange sequence in the game Friday Night. Now.
- 20:17Speaker 1: The Angels lose six to three, but they're down five
- 20:19Speaker 1: to nothing in the fifth inning, first and third no outs,
- 20:25Speaker 1: and Tiodosio twice tries a safety squeeze, fouls it off,
- 20:31Speaker 1: strikes out, and then Zach Nettle lines into an inning
- 20:34Speaker 1: ending double play. Now, granted, you're not probably going to
- 20:38Speaker 1: expect a three run homer from tiodo'sield at in that situation,
- 20:42Speaker 1: but why are you giving up and out in a
- 20:45Speaker 1: five nil game? Why aren't you at least, you know,
- 20:48Speaker 1: seeing if you can get a single and keep the
- 20:50Speaker 1: line moving and set the table for the top of
- 20:53Speaker 1: the order in that situation. I think you know the
- 20:57Speaker 1: answer to that. So you were as surprised as I was.
- 21:01Speaker 2: I will no, I don't think that they have any
- 21:03Speaker 2: faith in his bat, and that I think is not
- 21:08Speaker 2: the final answer on his playing ability. But right now
- 21:12Speaker 2: it appears as if he is a guy that if
- 21:14Speaker 2: you're going to do something like that, what is It's
- 21:17Speaker 2: also tough because you're telling the player that you have
- 21:20Speaker 2: really not much confidence in his ability either. I mean,
- 21:23Speaker 2: that's that's that's a kin to as baseball used to be.
- 21:27Speaker 2: That was a pitcher up there. You know that that's
- 21:30Speaker 2: generally what you would have them do, an automatic out.
- 21:33Speaker 2: And I think he's got more potential, I really do.
- 21:36Speaker 2: I just don't think he's that swing is is. I
- 21:40Speaker 2: hate high school. It is. It's kind of cologists, to
- 21:43Speaker 2: be honest, it's kind of Pokey and if he I think,
- 21:46Speaker 2: if he's a physical guy, he's a lot bigger than
- 21:49Speaker 2: I thought he was. I think if he was to
- 21:50Speaker 2: get and spend more time. And that's one of the
- 21:53Speaker 2: things Brady and Maybury. You know that they're doing the
- 21:56Speaker 2: best they can, but that that is the off season
- 22:01Speaker 2: overhaul and you're gonna need a lot of time to
- 22:04Speaker 2: really make a change. Now, we talked about Shannonwell's toe tap.
- 22:08Speaker 2: That's more of a quick thing. But I think that
- 22:11Speaker 2: Sidosia would really benefit from seeking out some advice on
- 22:16Speaker 2: getting more length in the hitting zone, improving his timing,
- 22:20Speaker 2: and really using some of his physicality bit right now,
- 22:23Speaker 2: it's kind of a manufacturer. Maybe some hit and runs
- 22:27Speaker 2: and try and limit the strikeouts.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Yeah, there's another strange sequence in that game. In the
- 22:31Speaker 1: seventh inning, the Angels are down five to three, bases loaded,
- 22:35Speaker 1: two outs and Kurt goes to Yuan Moncata off the bench.
- 22:40Speaker 1: That would seem like a good move. Makada switch hitter
- 22:43Speaker 1: who is far better from the left side than the
- 22:46Speaker 1: right side, and the Royals counter with the lefty Daniel
- 22:50Speaker 1: Lynch the fourth and Moncatta strikes out on ninety six
- 22:55Speaker 1: mile an hour up and await fastball from the right side.
- 22:58Speaker 1: He is now one for nighteen against left handed pitchers.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Now after the game or I can't remember us after
- 23:04Speaker 1: the game or the next day, and I'll give Kurt
- 23:07Speaker 1: a little credit for this. He he admitted, basically acknowledged
- 23:11Speaker 1: that he didn't think Lynch had enough time to warm
- 23:13Speaker 1: up to be ready to come into the game. That
- 23:16Speaker 1: was obviously wrong. Described it as a as a learning
- 23:22Speaker 1: you know, experience, but man, how much of a learning
- 23:26Speaker 1: curve do you get at this level? And these are
- 23:28Speaker 1: some tough lessons Kurt seems to be learning. We mentioned
- 23:33Speaker 1: his bullpen management, certainly raising some eyebrows among Angel fans.
- 23:39Speaker 1: What do you think of that move? And in his
- 23:41Speaker 1: explanation for.
- 23:42Speaker 2: It, seems like you're kind of leading me down a
- 23:47Speaker 2: path on this one. But this was a rough series
- 23:50Speaker 2: for Kurt, first time manager. You have to expect that
- 23:55Speaker 2: there will be hiccups. You know, another team just just
- 23:58Speaker 2: dismissed their entire coaching stuff, Alex Korra and the Red Sox,
- 24:03Speaker 2: they seem to be a dumpster fire. But this is
- 24:07Speaker 2: a deal with the Angels that really I think, what
- 24:10Speaker 2: are your expectations coming into the season, were they anything?
- 24:14Speaker 2: Were they high? If you did have reasonably high expectations,
- 24:19Speaker 2: then you start to think that this is it's starting
- 24:21Speaker 2: to look very disappointing. But I don't think that's the case.
- 24:25Speaker 2: I think that this was a guy that you know,
- 24:28Speaker 2: might have some real potential as a manager, and he
- 24:31Speaker 2: seems the players really seem to enjoy having him. He
- 24:35Speaker 2: seems to relate better. Younger guy, also a very nice guy.
- 24:38Speaker 2: I think he's it's going to be tough. He looked
- 24:41Speaker 2: frustrated in the dugout. I think that one of the
- 24:44Speaker 2: photos maybe the one that we may use or not,
- 24:46Speaker 2: but he looks slumped over and you're going to have
- 24:49Speaker 2: things like that. But the thing is the players see it.
- 24:51Speaker 2: I know, and Solaire's punch out today, if you saw
- 24:54Speaker 2: the camera angle, some of the guys in the dugout
- 24:57Speaker 2: just kind of you know, the head went down. And
- 24:59Speaker 2: it's tough because you don't want to be demonstrative and
- 25:02Speaker 2: you don't want the players to see it. I've played
- 25:03Speaker 2: for people who are and it's inevitable at times. If
- 25:06Speaker 2: you really botch something, don't be surprised. You may not
- 25:09Speaker 2: want to look in there at all. But this isn't
- 25:11Speaker 2: going to be the end of some of these things.
- 25:13Speaker 2: This team is learning on the fly, still a young
- 25:16Speaker 2: team in air quotes kind of not really. And if
- 25:21Speaker 2: this is this looks like the teams of years past,
- 25:24Speaker 2: but expedited. This looks like the August version right now.
- 25:29Speaker 2: And if that's the case, good luck.
- 25:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Sam Blum aka Sam Glum mentioned it on the last show.
- 25:36Speaker 1: There's you know, if you can't hold leads late in
- 25:40Speaker 1: the game, that is the most immoralizing thing for a team.
- 25:45Speaker 1: And you know, unless Sam Bachmann can find some his
- 25:50Speaker 1: better command, I think he does have the stuff to
- 25:54Speaker 1: be a you know, a high leverage leaver reliever. Unless
- 26:00Speaker 1: Joyce can come back really soon, unless Pomerance can can
- 26:03Speaker 1: gain his early season form, regain his early season form,
- 26:07Speaker 1: unless there's a miracle with Kirby eights, I'm just not
- 26:09Speaker 1: seeing it with this boltpen. And you mentioned this being
- 26:13Speaker 1: an expedited version of some of these teams we've seen
- 26:16Speaker 1: in the past couple of years. And I believe even
- 26:19Speaker 1: with a ninety nine lost season, they weren't this far
- 26:23Speaker 1: far or many games below five hundred this early. Are
- 26:26Speaker 1: they in danger right now? Mark of sort of the
- 26:29Speaker 1: seasons already slipping away.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Hard to say this wasn't all that promising. Their run
- 26:36Speaker 2: differential has now flipped from I think it was positive
- 26:39Speaker 2: teams to negative six. So it's not the greatest sign
- 26:44Speaker 2: and also not great are the other teams in the
- 26:46Speaker 2: Al West are starting to pick it up and play
- 26:50Speaker 2: better baseball? I think the Mariners at one four in
- 26:52Speaker 2: a row, and the Rangers are looking like an improved club,
- 26:57Speaker 2: and the Athletics are in first place. And we've talked
- 26:59Speaker 2: about and plenty. They're very dynamic and if they can
- 27:02Speaker 2: get it going, you know, the Astros are bringing up
- 27:05Speaker 2: the rear, but even them or they have more depth,
- 27:09Speaker 2: I believe than the Angels do. The Angels had these
- 27:11Speaker 2: anomaly games like today where they come out and usually
- 27:15Speaker 2: and Lugo has had a nice season, very lower and
- 27:19Speaker 2: run average, you know, went up today. But I don't
- 27:22Speaker 2: really know how to describe it other than they catch
- 27:25Speaker 2: some of the premium pitchers off guard. Possibly they swing
- 27:29Speaker 2: a lot, They swing early, more akin at times to
- 27:33Speaker 2: when the big leader goes down on rehabs. This isn't
- 27:35Speaker 2: the greatest example, but some of these these really good
- 27:38Speaker 2: pitchers just look stunned. With the way the Angels go
- 27:41Speaker 2: about their offensive approach, and I do wonder at times
- 27:44Speaker 2: what is going on this netto if you swing? You know,
- 27:48Speaker 2: if you throw him a first pitch fastball, you're going
- 27:50Speaker 2: to get a swing, and he is very good at
- 27:52Speaker 2: hitting it. He's got the highest I believe, vertical bad angle,
- 27:57Speaker 2: meaning he has the biggest upper cut in the game currently.
- 28:00Speaker 2: But what does that matter none if he keeps hitting
- 28:02Speaker 2: doubles on the left field line. So as far as
- 28:06Speaker 2: it goes, this was we'll see. They got the White
- 28:08Speaker 2: Sox next, the team that on paper they should be
- 28:12Speaker 2: a pretty good matchup against. But I don't think it
- 28:14Speaker 2: went that way last year. If you recall White Sox.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Out Mets coming in right off their heels in Anaheim
- 28:21Speaker 1: next weekend. We know how they're doing. Not very good.
- 28:24Speaker 1: I mean, there's been a lot has been said about
- 28:26Speaker 1: this schedule being very difficult in that first month, but
- 28:30Speaker 1: it is lightening up a bit, and unless the Angels
- 28:34Speaker 1: start turning things around pretty quickly, you know, this season
- 28:38Speaker 1: could get out of hand really way too early. Any
- 28:44Speaker 1: thoughts on the White Sox series and the Mets series,
- 28:47Speaker 1: Is this some time where they could be making up
- 28:50Speaker 1: a little ground at least, or at least try to
- 28:52Speaker 1: turn things around.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Normally, I would say, yes, I believe their record in
- 28:57Speaker 2: the last handful of years against let's say bad teams
- 29:02Speaker 2: is really not good. And how do you explain that?
- 29:06Speaker 2: I don't know. How did they sweep the Dodgers last year?
- 29:08Speaker 2: I don't know. The only thing I can think is
- 29:11Speaker 2: that sometimes maybe those better teams come in, they're not
- 29:15Speaker 2: always playing their best guys. Usually they do have their
- 29:18Speaker 2: guys out there. But anomaly is the word I used earlier.
- 29:22Speaker 2: I don't have anything better to explain how they go
- 29:24Speaker 2: from getting crushed last night with a position player pitching
- 29:28Speaker 2: to the offensive onslaught early. But you know that home
- 29:32Speaker 2: run that CAGLIONI hi, that was a gut punch. He
- 29:35Speaker 2: crushed it to just fair or foul was the only
- 29:39Speaker 2: thing you could see. It was palpable the momentum that
- 29:44Speaker 2: the Royals were gaining, and I wasn't surprised the way
- 29:46Speaker 2: the game ended. You could just kind of feel, I mean,
- 29:48Speaker 2: they just needed one more out, but it just looked
- 29:51Speaker 2: like it was going that way, and it went that way.
- 29:56Speaker 1: It sure did rough weekend for the Halos. It's a
- 30:01Speaker 1: rough episode for us, let's be honest, we're gonna end
- 30:04Speaker 1: it on that note. Thank you for tuning in, Please
- 30:09Speaker 1: like and subscribe, and we'll see you next time on
- 30:11Speaker 1: Halo Territory
- 30:17Speaker 2: M
