- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families podcast.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's the podcast for the time poor parent who just
- 0:09Speaker 2: wants answers.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Now, Gooday. This is doctor Justin Colson, the author of
- 0:12Speaker 1: all those books about making families happy, here with Kylie,
- 0:14Speaker 1: my wife from Under our six Kids, and we are
- 0:16Speaker 1: still celebrating because a million downloads. It's not a small thing.
- 0:20Speaker 1: That's a really big deal. And we are so grateful
- 0:23Speaker 1: for everybody for listening to the podcast and finding joy
- 0:26Speaker 1: in it and making their families happier. So yesterday we
- 0:28Speaker 1: were sharing a bunch of a bunch of our memories,
- 0:31Speaker 1: our top ten and we've gotten through the first five
- 0:34Speaker 1: of our podcast episodes this year.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I think we've got through the humiliation ones.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Oh there's some beautiful ones. Come on, some really nice moments.
- 0:43Speaker 1: There were some beautiful moments in case you missed it.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Yesterday we talked about Kylie quitting. So at the start
- 0:48Speaker 1: of the year, Kylie was going to Kyler is going
- 0:50Speaker 1: to go back to school start her education process all
- 0:52Speaker 1: over again. And before it even began it finished, we
- 0:55Speaker 1: talked about Jessica Row being a crap housewife, Kylie running
- 0:58Speaker 1: with a wedgie. We had a chat with author Susie
- 1:01Speaker 1: O'Brien and talked about the meaningful stuff that happened on
- 1:04Speaker 1: Mother's Day.
- 1:05Speaker 2: But today we're going to actually follow on from Mother's
- 1:09Speaker 2: Day because Mother's Day definitely became the most memorable event
- 1:16Speaker 2: of twenty twenty one. It started with a bath.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Actually, no, that's kind of where it ended. Kind of Actually,
- 1:25Speaker 1: I probably need to jump in here as well, because
- 1:28Speaker 1: the long and the short of it is that one
- 1:29Speaker 1: of the kids was running the bath so that they
- 1:30Speaker 1: could give you a special bath, and then they were
- 1:31Speaker 1: going to massage you on the massage table, and they
- 1:34Speaker 1: filled the bath and forgot that they were running it,
- 1:37Speaker 1: and it overflowed. And it didn't just overflow. I think
- 1:41Speaker 1: it overflowed for probably about thirty or forty minutes, multiple
- 1:44Speaker 1: bath tubs full of water flow.
- 1:46Speaker 2: The bathtub is at the other end of the house.
- 1:48Speaker 2: We were all at one end of the house and
- 1:49Speaker 2: they were at the other end of the house. They'd
- 1:52Speaker 2: started the bath and then just walked away.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Pretty much, and so the water has flowed into the
- 1:57Speaker 1: downstairs TV room. We've got a there's a media projects.
- 2:01Speaker 2: It's gone through the floor cavity. Yeah, that's gone into
- 2:04Speaker 2: the ceiling.
- 2:04Speaker 1: It's gone into the ceiling downstairs, and we've got a
- 2:06Speaker 1: media projector in that room that was there when we
- 2:09Speaker 1: bought the house. It's never worked. We have no idea
- 2:11Speaker 1: how to make it work. And it's an old junkie
- 2:14Speaker 1: thing that they probably paid one hundred bucks for an eBay,
- 2:16Speaker 1: but it was barely hanging onto the ceiling because so
- 2:19Speaker 1: much water had come through the floor into the ceiling
- 2:23Speaker 1: that the ceiling was so sodden that the screws were
- 2:26Speaker 1: falling through. The water was literally pouring through the light fixtures,
- 2:30Speaker 1: it was pouring out of the hole for the projector.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I went down the next day and I can put
- 2:36Speaker 1: I could push my fingers through the jip rock above
- 2:39Speaker 1: the door because there was so much water that went
- 2:42Speaker 1: through there. There's insulation bats in the ceiling. They're probably
- 2:45Speaker 1: to dampen the noise between the two levels of the house,
- 2:48Speaker 1: and they're sodden. They've absorbed. I reckon four bath tubs
- 2:51Speaker 1: full of water in the time that that bath kept
- 2:53Speaker 1: on running. So one of the kids alerted us to
- 2:55Speaker 1: it by stepping into the inland lake downstairs and saying,
- 2:58Speaker 1: the floors went down here, And that's when one of
- 3:00Speaker 1: the kids has gone, Oh no, the bath and we've
- 3:03Speaker 1: never had this happen before. And then you wanted to
- 3:05Speaker 1: come down and see it, and I almost tackled you
- 3:07Speaker 1: on the stairs. I'm like, no, it's Mother's Day. You're
- 3:10Speaker 1: going to stay up here and you're going to have
- 3:12Speaker 1: a good time. Well, I go downstairs and deal with this.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I mean, it really put a dampener on our mother's day.
- 3:19Speaker 2: It all happened just as Chanelle was putting lunch on
- 3:23Speaker 2: the table, so there was a lot of chaos going on,
- 3:26Speaker 2: and I just you were very adamant that I was
- 3:28Speaker 2: not going downstairs, and so I thought, I'm just gonna
- 3:30Speaker 2: have to make the best of this. So we sat
- 3:33Speaker 2: down all the girls because you and Jared had gone downstairs.
- 3:35Speaker 1: When Jared walked up the stairs, so Jared's his son
- 3:37Speaker 1: in law, by the way.
- 3:38Speaker 2: An hour or so later, he looked like he'd had
- 3:41Speaker 2: a shower in his clothes. He was dripping, his hair
- 3:44Speaker 2: was wet. I really, I can't I can't even begin
- 3:48Speaker 2: to imagine what you guys had walked into.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I'm not even kidding. It was an When I say
- 3:53Speaker 1: an inland Lake that Fortunately the floor is tiled, but
- 3:56Speaker 1: the water was in great part of across the entire thing.
- 4:01Speaker 1: We had to take the lounge out, we had to
- 4:02Speaker 1: take the coffee table out, we had to take all
- 4:04Speaker 1: of the furniture out. There was I think we soaked
- 4:06Speaker 1: at least thirty towels full of water, not to mention
- 4:10Speaker 1: that we were using the mop and the bucket and
- 4:11Speaker 1: the sponges. Like the water was covering the walls. It
- 4:15Speaker 1: was everywhere, which is why the builder has told us
- 4:19Speaker 1: that we need to replace the ceilings in the walls.
- 4:23Speaker 2: So I ended up having a very cold bath because
- 4:28Speaker 2: all the water, the hot water got used up the wall.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And I sat in there and tried to be calm
- 4:35Speaker 2: and relaxed while I had a many facial and a
- 4:40Speaker 2: foot scrub right and then meantime the washing machines wearing
- 4:45Speaker 2: right next door. The door was being opened and closed
- 4:48Speaker 2: and slammed.
- 4:48Speaker 1: It was pretty stinky in there. I don't know what.
- 4:50Speaker 1: You came out smelling like they had.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Three different candles scented, not just normal candles scented, three
- 4:56Speaker 2: different scented candles burning in the tiny bathroom space. And
- 5:02Speaker 2: from there I was ushered out of the bathroom and
- 5:05Speaker 2: into one of the bedrooms where they had set up
- 5:07Speaker 2: the message table so I could have a massage.
- 5:10Speaker 1: So that's about when I came upstairs from cleaning downstairs,
- 5:13Speaker 1: and there was twelve sets of hands massaging different parts
- 5:17Speaker 1: of your body. So I've climbed under the message table
- 5:19Speaker 1: so I could laugh at you while you laughed at
- 5:21Speaker 1: me because of what I just had to deal with downstairs.
- 5:24Speaker 1: And I just remember they had that nice, calming massage
- 5:28Speaker 1: music on and the room smelt kind of nice ish
- 5:31Speaker 1: in a weird way.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I don't know how much strawberry moose they stuck on
- 5:35Speaker 2: my body.
- 5:36Speaker 1: But what was the funniest was that the kids, like,
- 5:39Speaker 1: a massage is supposed to be relaxing, and all I
- 5:41Speaker 1: can hear is the kids whacking each other's hand, saying,
- 5:43Speaker 1: that's my part. You don't a lot of pet men,
- 5:45Speaker 1: You can't message that patter, that's my part massage.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Like one point, I said to Annie, are you supposed
- 5:51Speaker 2: to be relaxing me? She was like, oh, Mom, what
- 5:54Speaker 2: am I doing wrong?
- 5:55Speaker 1: It was like a distinct and significant form of a
- 5:59Speaker 1: new form of talk. Jud just get six girls some massage. Mum,
- 6:03Speaker 1: Well that's what happened. We are still paying for it today. Literally,
- 6:07Speaker 1: the room hasn't been painted.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Our ceiling has been resheeted, right, we still and we
- 6:11Speaker 2: have lights now.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Finally, yes, after months, but they're.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Still a holyood painting that needs to be done.
- 6:17Speaker 1: One of our favorite episodes was revisiting how we can
- 6:21Speaker 1: make road trips work because, I mean, with a pandemic
- 6:24Speaker 1: and with people not being allowed to fly and most
- 6:26Speaker 1: people just staying within their state because of lockdowns and things,
- 6:29Speaker 1: we kind of figured an episode about how to make
- 6:32Speaker 1: a road trip work would be helpful. That was episode
- 6:34Speaker 1: two hundred and thirty four. Bingo What Bingo? I thought
- 6:38Speaker 1: we were playing Bingo as a talking game. This is
- 6:40Speaker 1: a song. Okay.
- 6:42Speaker 2: There was a farmer had a dog and Bingo was
- 6:44Speaker 2: his name. O b I ngo ing b i ngo.
- 6:50Speaker 1: And Bingo was his name. That's just a song. What's
- 6:52Speaker 1: the point of that.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Well, the idea is the next time we seing it,
- 6:54Speaker 2: we're going to take away the B and so we
- 6:56Speaker 2: have to clap and then do ingo, and then we're
- 6:59Speaker 2: going to clap again for the third verse and we're
- 7:01Speaker 2: going to do.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Be ng o ng Okay, all right, so that's there's
- 7:07Speaker 1: some coordination. That's great. For kids, for little kids, what
- 7:09Speaker 1: about for bigger kids? This is the song that never ends.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, this is the song that never ends. I
- 7:16Speaker 1: don't know the tune problem. Yes, it goes on and on.
- 7:19Speaker 1: My friends, some people started singing and not knowing what
- 7:23Speaker 1: it was.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Why are you laughing at me?
- 7:24Speaker 1: You've got a great voice. And then the continued singing
- 7:28Speaker 1: it forever, just because this is the song that never ends,
- 7:30Speaker 1: and it starts all over again. It's torture. We're supposed
- 7:33Speaker 1: to be trying to help people have a nice card.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Well, my absolute favorite over the last few years is
- 7:37Speaker 2: Peel the Avocado.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Their boid just came out and I was just like,
- 7:46Speaker 1: what are you doing? And the YouTube clip is you
- 7:54Speaker 1: have to watch it a definitely look it up. It's
- 7:57Speaker 1: worth We're worth a good laugh.
- 7:59Speaker 2: But the highlight of all of the comments that came
- 8:02Speaker 2: through this would be my number one pick.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Well, it's actually ours because we had lots about this one.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Yep, somebody said they play the fart game.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Which is really a word replacement game. What happens is
- 8:15Speaker 1: you find any song that has the word heart in
- 8:19Speaker 1: the title or in the lyrics, and you change it
- 8:22Speaker 1: too fart, So we did a little bit. I think
- 8:25Speaker 1: they must have a few boys in there. We did
- 8:26Speaker 1: a little bit of googling, and I thought, well, this
- 8:29Speaker 1: would be fun to sing, because if we're changing heart
- 8:35Speaker 1: to fart, that well, that happens.
- 8:45Speaker 2: The family life is full of ups and downs, and
- 8:46Speaker 2: we've obviously celebrated some significant ups and some hilarious moments
- 8:52Speaker 2: that twenty twenty one is brought. But one of the
- 8:54Speaker 2: hardest things that our family has had to deal with
- 8:56Speaker 2: this year is actually farewelling. I'm going to cry.
- 9:00Speaker 1: We're willing our puppy dog, Benson. We had him for
- 9:03Speaker 1: a long time, and after more than a decade in
- 9:06Speaker 1: our family, we shared an episode two hundred and ninety
- 9:09Speaker 1: two Our Families Goodbye to Benson. We wrapped him up
- 9:14Speaker 1: in that blanket of his and put him back into
- 9:17Speaker 1: the car and brought him home, and we stood around
- 9:21Speaker 1: this little grave that I dug in the backyard and
- 9:24Speaker 1: had a little funeral service for our dog. It didn't
- 9:27Speaker 1: take too long. Well, it took a little while because
- 9:29Speaker 1: there's a lot of us, but we just shared our
- 9:31Speaker 1: favorite memories of Benson.
- 9:34Speaker 2: And then little Emily just gets us every time. When
- 9:38Speaker 2: it was her turn, she was so articulate as she
- 9:42Speaker 2: expressed how she was feeling. She just said, I feel
- 9:45Speaker 2: like something's broken inside me and I don't know if
- 9:49Speaker 2: it will ever get fixed.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I think that's how we all felt. I am just
- 9:53Speaker 1: so grateful for the discomfort. I'm so grateful for the sadness.
- 9:59Speaker 1: I'm so grateful for the and sorrow that we felt.
- 10:03Speaker 1: There's something extraordinarily powerful about going through that and helping
- 10:09Speaker 1: the kids to have that experience to mourn and a
- 10:13Speaker 1: grieve and to understand the impermanence of life. It's been
- 10:19Speaker 1: some some months and it still hurts. Yeah. Yeah, I
- 10:23Speaker 1: think we should take a quick break and just kind
- 10:24Speaker 1: of recalibrate. We're sharing our top ten so far this
- 10:28Speaker 1: year of special moments, things that we've been able to
- 10:31Speaker 1: share on the podcast that have been important to us
- 10:33Speaker 1: and that I guess have helped us to have one
- 10:36Speaker 1: million downloads of the Happy Families podcast. Up next, one
- 10:40Speaker 1: of our most popular interviews of the year, and perhaps
- 10:43Speaker 1: the most embarrassing thing that I have done in a
- 10:45Speaker 1: long time. It's the Happy Families Podcast.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Imagine a home where discipline got results without anyone having
- 10:52Speaker 4: to feel bad or in trouble, the do's and don'ts
- 10:54Speaker 4: of discipline. There's a webinar to help parents set limits
- 10:57Speaker 4: with love, compassion and humanity. It now at happy families
- 11:01Speaker 4: dot com, dot au slash shop.
- 11:03Speaker 2: It's the Happy Families podcast, the podcast for the time
- 11:06Speaker 2: poor parent who just wants answers now, and today we
- 11:09Speaker 2: are reveling in one million downloads and just talking about
- 11:13Speaker 2: the highlights that have come from those episodes.
- 11:16Speaker 1: One of the most popular interviews that we've done this
- 11:18Speaker 1: year was with Maggie Dent. I mean, everybody loves Maggie
- 11:20Speaker 1: and we had a great conversation with her about raising boys.
- 11:24Speaker 3: There is still what we call societal norms that actually
- 11:27Speaker 3: think there's an inevitability to boys behaving badly, which is
- 11:30Speaker 3: so wrong because we disrespect their need for movement and
- 11:33Speaker 3: it is much higher and there's lots of reasons why
- 11:36Speaker 3: that we can now show. We're also push formalized learning down,
- 11:39Speaker 3: so we're expecting little boys to be able to sit longer,
- 11:43Speaker 3: cross their legs were Apparently they're joints side as flexible
- 11:45Speaker 3: as girls, so that can cause them pain. They also
- 11:49Speaker 3: don't process verbal language as well. They're unable to identify
- 11:52Speaker 3: emotions and express them without physicality. So what we do
- 11:56Speaker 3: is punish them and shame them, and the whole you know,
- 11:59Speaker 3: traffic lucks is them and red names on a board
- 12:01Speaker 3: shame's boys deeply. So what happens is we make them wrong.
- 12:06Speaker 3: We don't make the fact that they're struggling to do something,
- 12:08Speaker 3: We don't work with them to help them manage that
- 12:10Speaker 3: need for movement. We make them wrong. And what that
- 12:13Speaker 3: does is berries a rage that will come up sadly
- 12:17Speaker 3: as they get into puberty, when the limbic brain grows.
- 12:19Speaker 3: So that's why we often have really angry boys later.
- 12:22Speaker 2: That was such a great conversation we had with Maggie.
- 12:24Speaker 2: But we're going out with a big bang today. It's
- 12:26Speaker 2: one of the funniest episodes that we have recorded this year.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Happened to be one of your most embarrassing moments.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't quite stay on the roof as long
- 12:37Speaker 1: as I needed to. Is it a bad Is it
- 12:40Speaker 1: a plane? No, it's my husband flying off the roof.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I'd really like to know what you learned from that experience.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Oh, you're going to put me through that publicly? Yes, Well,
- 12:51Speaker 1: I learned that I needed a new blower. As a
- 12:53Speaker 1: result of that experience, we did need a new blower.
- 12:56Speaker 1: And what did you come home with? I came home
- 12:58Speaker 1: with the granddaddy of blowers. It's a ripper. I'm so
- 13:01Speaker 1: they didn't want to.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Sell it to you because it's an industrial grade blower.
- 13:06Speaker 2: But you were like, I can't get to that roof
- 13:08Speaker 2: ever again. I need something that's going to blow for
- 13:11Speaker 2: miles Yet.
- 13:12Speaker 1: What I learned is next time, I've got to stand
- 13:13Speaker 1: further up the roof where the slope's not as strong,
- 13:15Speaker 1: So I need a stronger blower. No, no, I mean
- 13:18Speaker 1: I probably won't go up there again. We'll probably have
- 13:20Speaker 1: to get some professionals in and put some gutter guard
- 13:22Speaker 1: over that gutter so that I never have to go
- 13:24Speaker 1: near it again. That's enough luning for one day. I'm
- 13:27Speaker 1: a slow learner, but I just little bit by bit.
- 13:30Speaker 1: What do you want me to learn?
- 13:31Speaker 2: I want you to learn that number one two is
- 13:35Speaker 2: better than one, two is better than one. Yes, make
- 13:38Speaker 2: sure you have someone for starters if you're going to
- 13:41Speaker 2: do something silly.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Well, I had my phone. Your phone wasn't very much helpful.
- 13:45Speaker 2: You know. When you took me out there, it looked
- 13:47Speaker 2: like I was going to a crime scene. I could
- 13:49Speaker 2: literally see the shape of your body.
- 13:51Speaker 1: In my garden. Well, we are so grateful that you
