Latest / Loud & Lifted / Quick Lift: How Women Build Confidence and Reinvent Themselves
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to A Loud and Lifted Quick Lift, the
- 0:02shorter episode where we take a few of the biggest
- 0:04ideas from the full conversation and turn them
- 0:06into something practical. And Jeannie's episode
- 0:09is such a good one for this, because yes, her
- 0:12story is extraordinary. She reinvented herself
- 0:15in midlife. She took on major open water swims.
- 0:19She said yes to things that most people would
- 0:21run from. But the bigger lesson is not about
- 0:24swimming. It's about how confidence actually
- 0:27gets built. Because I think a lot of women look
- 0:29at someone like Jeanne and think, well, she must
- 0:32just naturally be brave or she must have always
- 0:34been confident. But that is not really the story.
- 0:38The story is that confidence was built over time
- 0:41by taking the next step, stretching outside her
- 0:43comfort zone and choosing not to let fear make
- 0:46every decision. And that is what makes this conversation
- 0:49so relevant. because most of us are not being
- 0:53asked to jump into the Hudson or swim across
- 0:55the English Channel, but we are being asked to
- 0:58do brave things in our own lives all the time.
- 1:02Speak up, raise our hand, change directions,
- 1:05try something new, ask for more and trust ourselves.
- 1:08So here are takeaways from Jeannie's episode
- 1:11that really stood out and one action item for
- 1:13each of them. Number one, confidence doesn't
- 1:15come first. You build it by saying yes before
- 1:17you're fully ready. This is really the heart
- 1:20of Jeannie's story. So many women are waiting
- 1:22for confidence to arrive before they make the
- 1:25move, before they apply, before they speak up,
- 1:27before they raise their hand, or before they
- 1:29even say yes. But confidence usually does not
- 1:32show up first. It gets built. rep after rep,
- 1:36after the risk, after the stretch, and after
- 1:38the uncomfortable moment when you move away.
- 1:41And I think that this is where Jeannie's model
- 1:43works so well. She did not wake up one day magically
- 1:46confident enough to do huge bold things. She
- 1:49built that confidence by doing smaller hard things
- 1:52first. and the bigger ones after. And one of
- 1:55the simplest but strongest things she said in
- 1:56the episode was this, say yes, not to everything,
- 2:00not to nonsense, not to things that go against
- 2:03your values or burn you out, but say yes to the
- 2:06opportunity, the challenge, the stretch. The
- 2:09next level, when fear is the only thing telling
- 2:12you no. This is such an important distinction
- 2:15because sometimes we call it, it's not the right
- 2:17time or I'm not sure I'm ready. When really what
- 2:20is happening is we're just uncomfortable and
- 2:23growth and comfort rarely hang out together.
- 2:26A lot of women miss opportunities because they
- 2:28think they need to be 100 % buttoned up first,
- 2:31but almost nobody is. Sometimes the opportunity
- 2:35comes first, then the confidence catches up.
- 2:38item, pick one thing you've been hesitating on
- 2:40because you did not feel fully ready. Ask yourself,
- 2:43is this truly a no or is it fear? If it's fear,
- 2:47say yes to the next step this week. Number two,
- 2:51stop asking what if I can't and start asking
- 2:54what if I can? This needs to be one of the loudest
- 2:57takeaways from the whole episode because most
- 2:59of us are incredibly good at imagining what could
- 3:02go wrong. What if I fail? What if I embarrass
- 3:04myself? What if I'm not good enough? What if
- 3:06I say yes and regret it? We can build a disaster
- 3:10scenario very, very fast. But Jeannie flips that
- 3:13with one simple question. What if I can? What
- 3:17if I can do this? What if I can figure it out?
- 3:20What if it goes better than I expected? This
- 3:22is not pretending that risk does not exist and
- 3:25it's not even fake positivity. It's just refusing
- 3:28to let fear be the only voice in your head. And
- 3:32that matters because the question you lead with
- 3:34shapes how you show up. If you lead with, what
- 3:37if I can't, you hesitate, you shrink, you stay
- 3:40guarded, you have commit. If you lead with, what
- 3:43if I can, there is openness, possibility, energy,
- 3:48and ownership. And frankly, if we're capable
- 3:51of imagining the worst case scenario all day
- 3:53long, we should also be capable of imagining
- 3:56a good outcome too. That mental shift is not
- 3:59fluff. It changes behavior. action item. The
- 4:03next time you catch yourself thinking, what if
- 4:04I can't stop and replace it in real time with
- 4:07what if I can? Then write down two positive outcomes
- 4:11that could happen if you move forward. Number
- 4:13three, reinvention is not too late. Sometimes
- 4:16it's finally listening to yourself. One of the
- 4:19most powerful parts of Jeannie's story is that
- 4:21she made a major shift after a long career. She
- 4:24had spent 20 years in IT. She had built a career.
- 4:26She had experience. She had credibility. And
- 4:29then she got to a point where she realized this
- 4:31is not it anymore. And that is big because a
- 4:35lot of women stay in something too long because
- 4:37it looks stable, logical, or successful from
- 4:40the outside. Or maybe because they have invested
- 4:43so much time into it that leaving it feels irresponsible.
- 4:47But there is a difference between something being
- 4:49hard and something being out of alignment. And
- 4:52what I love in Jeannie's story is that she finally
- 4:54listened to that internal pull. Not because she
- 4:57had every answer, not because the next step was
- 4:59perfectly mapped out, but she knew she could
- 5:02not keep forcing herself to stay in something
- 5:05that no longer fit. This is a lesson that so
- 5:08many women need. You do not have to stay stuck
- 5:10just because you've been there a long time. You
- 5:13do not have to keep living an old version of
- 5:15yourself just because it made sense years ago.
- 5:18Reinvention is not reckless. A lot of time, it's
- 5:21just honesty. Action item, ask yourself, where
- 5:25in my life or work Do I know something no longer
- 5:28fits? Don't solve it all today. Just tell yourself
- 5:31the truth. Next, the people around you matter
- 5:34more than you think. Jeannie's story also reminds
- 5:37us that courage is personal, but it's rarely
- 5:39built alone. She talked about having people around
- 5:42her who encouraged her, supported her, and helped
- 5:44her believe it was OK to let go of one chapter
- 5:47and move toward another. And that matters because
- 5:50sometimes we make confidence feel like this is
- 5:52totally a solo project. Like, if we're strong
- 5:55enough, we would not need support. And this just
- 5:58is not true. Sometimes borrowed belief is what
- 6:00gets us moving. Sometimes we need the friend
- 6:03who says, do it. Sometimes we need the mentor
- 6:05who says, you're ready. And we need the partner
- 6:08who says, it's okay to let go. This is not weakness.
- 6:12This is wisdom. And this is a good reminder to
- 6:14look at your circle. Are the people around you
- 6:17helping you to get braver? Or are they keeping
- 6:19you small, safe, and stuck? Because support does
- 6:22not just need to feel nice. It can change what
- 6:25we are willing to do. Action item, reach out
- 6:28to one person this week who makes you stronger.
- 6:30Tell them what you are considering, where you
- 6:32feel stuck, or what stretch you are trying to
- 6:35make. Let someone support you. Jeannie's story
- 6:38is about a lot more than swimming, although her
- 6:42feats are amazing. It's about confidence, reinvention,
- 6:46courage, support. and possibility. And maybe
- 6:49most of all, it's all about refusing to let what
- 6:52if I can't be the question that drives your life?
- 6:54Because the better question, and maybe the one
- 6:57more of us need to ask is, what if I can? And
- 7:01then right behind it, what if I just say yes?
- 7:04Thanks for listening to this quick lift. If you
- 7:05have not listened to Jeannie's full episode,
- 7:07I strongly encourage you to do so. Until next
- 7:10time, stay loud and stay lifted.
