- 0:00Speaker 1: It's a special pre vacation edition of One More Thing.
- 0:04Speaker 2: I'm Strong.
- 0:10Speaker 1: With Me board operator Michaelangelo and executive producer Mike hantson
- 0:15Speaker 1: joining us today. One thing I gotta do, I gotta
- 0:18Speaker 1: it's it's it's important that I not get in the
- 0:21Speaker 1: mindset of its vacation. So you need to eat more
- 0:26Speaker 1: or or or eat crappier. So easy to slide into
- 0:31Speaker 1: that it's vacation. Let's have donuts or a cake or
- 0:34Speaker 1: whatever the heck. So I'm trying to fight.
- 0:37Speaker 2: That or spend any amount of money on all kinds
- 0:41Speaker 2: of stuff like food or T shirts or that extra
- 0:46Speaker 2: little whatever, fun thing that you don't need to spend
- 0:49Speaker 2: money on.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I give halfway on that. But yeah, it's very
- 0:55Speaker 1: easy to go too far. So here's my questions before
- 0:59Speaker 1: I head on a vacation. Part of it is because
- 1:02Speaker 1: I want to. I've only got a couple of vacations
- 1:04Speaker 1: left with my kids. Hanson, You know how this is.
- 1:07Speaker 1: You count how many summers you got left with your kids.
- 1:10Speaker 1: It's shocking. Yeah, and you think I only have this
- 1:13Speaker 1: many more summers of vacations with them. I may ever
- 1:16Speaker 1: go on vacation with them again in my life after
- 1:19Speaker 1: a couple of years from now, it's really quite shocking.
- 1:22Speaker 1: What's the best vacation you ever went on as a
- 1:25Speaker 1: kid or the one that you remember the most as
- 1:28Speaker 1: a kid with your family, Michaelangelo, You go first.
- 1:31Speaker 3: We went in an RV together up to the Organ Coast.
- 1:34Speaker 3: It was an adventure because my dad didn't know how
- 1:37Speaker 3: to drive the RV and actually ripped the mirror off.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Yeah, was that the enjoyable part or just a side
- 1:44Speaker 1: memory of it?
- 1:44Speaker 3: This is a side memory. There's a lot of good memories,
- 1:46Speaker 3: but it was stuff that I thought was funny. You know.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, that that does. That sounds fantastic because you
- 1:53Speaker 1: all got to be together when you're an RV, and
- 1:55Speaker 1: it's the being together part that like really makes the
- 1:58Speaker 1: vacation to me, I think, But anson vacation.
- 2:02Speaker 2: See, we were a simple people there in South Dakota,
- 2:05Speaker 2: so vacations didn't happen all that often. A lot of
- 2:09Speaker 2: them revolved around I guess if it was a vacation,
- 2:10Speaker 2: it would be more like going to my dad's softball tournaments.
- 2:13Speaker 2: But there is a place called Lake Okoboji. It's pretty cool.
- 2:20Speaker 2: They have this old carnival totally worn out rides, super dated.
- 2:27Speaker 2: They had a bumper, cars that hadn't worked in thirty years,
- 2:30Speaker 2: that kind of thing. But for a little kid, it
- 2:32Speaker 2: was a pretty neat place to hang out. So going
- 2:35Speaker 2: to Okoboji was always a good time.
- 2:37Speaker 1: You both have made My point though that I wanted
- 2:41Speaker 1: to make is like my memories of the vacations. We
- 2:44Speaker 1: didn't do anything extravagant either. We drove to Grandma's house,
- 2:48Speaker 1: but we'd stop at some tourist trapped things along the way,
- 2:51Speaker 1: and you stay in a hotel like a Super eight
- 2:54Speaker 1: with a pool and just stuff like that. It was
- 2:56Speaker 1: freaking fantastic. It was fantastic. And I know all y'all
- 3:03Speaker 1: some of y'all don't do that. I know somebody who's
- 3:06Speaker 1: taking their kids to the south of France for the vacation,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and fine, you know, if you got the money, But
- 3:14Speaker 1: I just I don't know, do you get more memories
- 3:17Speaker 1: out of that as a kid? Does that matter more
- 3:19Speaker 1: to you than just just hanging out with the family
- 3:21Speaker 1: doing stuff. You're at a restaurant, you're at a pool,
- 3:24Speaker 1: you're in an RV or whatever. My youngest son loved
- 3:30Speaker 1: our longest road trip we took. We went through Wyoming
- 3:33Speaker 1: in Montana and all across South Dakota. We stopped over
- 3:36Speaker 1: Custer's Last Stand was then we went to Mount Rushmore.
- 3:40Speaker 1: But just it was just a road trip. And when
- 3:42Speaker 1: you're a kid, every stop at Big Giant truck stop
- 3:45Speaker 1: is fun because there's a slushy machine and just whatever.
- 3:51Speaker 1: It's all fun. And I love those memories. Now, my
- 3:55Speaker 1: oldestes he has a little more expensive taste. He really
- 3:57Speaker 1: liked when we went to New York City, and but
- 4:00Speaker 1: he likes Hubbub. He likes the crowds and noise and
- 4:06Speaker 1: cars and stuff like that. But I don't know, I
- 4:08Speaker 1: just I don't feel like it takes a lot. If
- 4:11Speaker 1: you're together and you're hanging out and you're laughing and
- 4:14Speaker 1: you just have that vacation vibe. But we got nothing
- 4:16Speaker 1: to do, are you. One thing that really sticks out
- 4:18Speaker 1: in my mind about vacations though, my dad, So my
- 4:22Speaker 1: dad my whole life. You could see his jaw moving
- 4:28Speaker 1: when his mouth was shut because he was under stress.
- 4:32Speaker 1: You could see this little moving right here or just
- 4:34Speaker 1: under stress, just kind of daily on vacation that would
- 4:38Speaker 1: go away. Huh. I always noticed that his little jaw
- 4:42Speaker 1: stress thing that he had days when he worked was
- 4:46Speaker 1: gone on vacation, and he'd become a different person where
- 4:49Speaker 1: he'd be just he was just like, sure, get a
- 4:52Speaker 1: can of coke like normally be it. Can I get
- 4:54Speaker 1: a can? Go? No, We're not gonna spend money on coke.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Vacation we did and it was just so exciting.
- 4:59Speaker 2: My wife refers to me as a vacation Mike, and
- 5:02Speaker 2: I know what you're talking about.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I had a long vacation before I started working with
- 5:06Speaker 2: you guys on the show, is like about three months.
- 5:08Speaker 2: And she said vacation Mike was one of the best
- 5:11Speaker 2: mics I've ever known. She said, you were so well,
- 5:14Speaker 2: so happy, and so well adjusted. And I was like, well, yeah,
- 5:16Speaker 2: I guess you know. I had nothing to do, but
- 5:19Speaker 2: uh yeah, vacation Mike.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah. Is that something we should work on all the
- 5:23Speaker 1: time to be more like vacation Jack, vacation Mike, vacation
- 5:26Speaker 1: my dad all the time? Or is it just part
- 5:28Speaker 1: of life Michael Michael Angelo.
- 5:31Speaker 3: See, I only like vacation for a short time because
- 5:33Speaker 3: it drives me crazy. I have to stick to my routine.
- 5:36Speaker 3: I think that's why I work all the time. It
- 5:38Speaker 3: drives me crazy, did not do anything.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Got to tell you what, I got used to being
- 5:41Speaker 2: on vacation for three months. It was pretty freaking awesome.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Actually, well, you weren't exactly doing nothing because he had
- 5:47Speaker 1: two young kids, so I was doing close to nothing.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Jack, I really stayed up late.
- 5:51Speaker 1: No, I see.
- 5:52Speaker 2: We Actually I continued with their you know, kind of
- 5:55Speaker 2: to Michael's point. I didn't want to disrupt them, so
- 5:58Speaker 2: we continue to take our to daycare and just you know, like,
- 6:02Speaker 2: let's let's keep their social existence together. And meanwhile, I
- 6:05Speaker 2: just I had a guy coming over to work on
- 6:07Speaker 2: our house, and otherwise I would go out to coffee
- 6:09Speaker 2: and I'd fart around and stay up late and watch
- 6:12Speaker 2: every show that I hadn't watched over the past couple
- 6:14Speaker 2: of years. And it became a lifestyle that I really
- 6:18Speaker 2: really enjoyed.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I should talk to my dad about this. I've never
- 6:21Speaker 1: said anything to him about it, but it was vacation, Dad.
- 6:24Speaker 1: He was a different guy on vacation. He would he
- 6:27Speaker 1: would he would just relax in a way that he
- 6:30Speaker 1: normally didn't. And you know, when you're a parent, you
- 6:34Speaker 1: know that feeling you got, you got, you got your life,
- 6:36Speaker 1: You're doing your life you're doing your job, you're doing
- 6:38Speaker 1: your gotta get kids here, and you got this paperwork
- 6:40Speaker 1: to fill out, and we got things to do, and
- 6:41Speaker 1: just you got to get to bed on time and
- 6:43Speaker 1: got to get to the pharmacy because your medicine's almost out.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Just all these different things, and on vacation, all that
- 6:48Speaker 1: goes away and just a new thing happens. I think
- 6:52Speaker 1: that's what retirement would be like. Yeah, I don't know.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's exactly, exactly a complete loss of months
- 7:00Speaker 2: of time. I know my in laws how often they'll
- 7:03Speaker 2: tell me what day of the week is this? I
- 7:04Speaker 2: say what? They don't know what day it is. It
- 7:07Speaker 2: could be Sunday, it could be Tuesday. It could be noon,
- 7:11Speaker 2: it could be ten o'clock at night.
- 7:12Speaker 1: They don't know.
- 7:13Speaker 2: They don't keep track.
- 7:14Speaker 1: The only reason my parents keep track is because they
- 7:16Speaker 1: know what days. They have what at the Senior center
- 7:19Speaker 1: to eat lunch. It's Wednesday, so they have, you know,
- 7:22Speaker 1: roast beef.
- 7:22Speaker 3: I picture my Walmart job as my retirement. I'll be
- 7:26Speaker 3: a greeter with no filter, basically somebody.
- 7:30Speaker 1: You're not a good relaxer.
- 7:31Speaker 3: No I'm not.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not really eat I can.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Do it for a day or two, but then that's
- 7:35Speaker 3: about it.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I love road trips. I know a lot of people
- 7:39Speaker 1: hate them. Never do them, try to avoid having to
- 7:41Speaker 1: drive anywhere. I love man When we get in the
- 7:43Speaker 1: car and we head out. My youngest is on boy
- 7:46Speaker 1: scout trips. So my oldest Sam and I are going
- 7:49Speaker 1: to go to Nevada and ride dirt bikes. But just
- 7:52Speaker 1: get on the road. I get a cup of coffee,
- 7:54Speaker 1: he gets an energy drink, and you listen to some
- 7:56Speaker 1: music and just a freaking love that.
- 7:59Speaker 2: See you, you traveled a lot before you had kids.
- 8:01Speaker 2: You traveled a ton on your own, solo trips, spontaneous.
- 8:04Speaker 2: You just went yes, and you were comfortable in whatever
- 8:08Speaker 2: environment you were in. You wherever you went, you were like,
- 8:10Speaker 2: this is great.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I love this.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I could sit down for five minutes if there's some
- 8:14Speaker 2: scenic spot that you stopped in and sit and appreciate
- 8:16Speaker 2: it and not think about anything but that moment. Right that,
- 8:19Speaker 2: that's how it was with you. I'm assuming because I
- 8:21Speaker 2: have that same sensation. I did similar trips. You and
- 8:24Speaker 2: I probably went up and down the coast to similar
- 8:27Speaker 2: places before we had kids. If I were to make
- 8:30Speaker 2: those trips, now I'd be constantly thinking about them, and
- 8:32Speaker 2: it's difficult to relax or to set. Like we went
- 8:36Speaker 2: to the beach last weekend. I couldn't enjoy it because
- 8:39Speaker 2: I was constantly thinking of is this one safe? Is
- 8:42Speaker 2: this has this one drowned yet? Was the sunburn? What's
- 8:45Speaker 2: going on?
- 8:45Speaker 1: They? Do?
- 8:45Speaker 2: They need to eat?
- 8:47Speaker 1: Like?
- 8:47Speaker 2: What you know is one?
- 8:51Speaker 1: Is my wife happy?
- 8:53Speaker 2: Is my mom happy? Like all these things and just
- 8:55Speaker 2: checking on everybody that was impossible. I took a five
- 8:58Speaker 2: minutes to just sit there and listen the waves crashing
- 9:00Speaker 2: into the beach, and I was like, this is really cool.
- 9:02Speaker 2: I remember I used to do this for hours.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Yeah is that a shark out there? Yeah?
- 9:06Speaker 2: No, really that that thought crossed my mind to scanning
- 9:09Speaker 2: the waves make sure there's no shark getting my son.
- 9:13Speaker 1: I so I've always done this. I think my parents
- 9:15Speaker 1: did this too. Yeah, back in the day you had to.
- 9:17Speaker 1: But I don't have a schedule when we go in
- 9:20Speaker 1: these road trips. I have no idea how far we're
- 9:22Speaker 1: gonna drive it down and where we're gonna stay. And
- 9:24Speaker 1: I mentioned that to some people that were just blown
- 9:26Speaker 1: away by the You don't have your hotels booked a
- 9:29Speaker 1: long way. I've never even crossed my mind to do that.
- 9:32Speaker 2: They that's the best way to do it. It's it's
- 9:35Speaker 2: it's to me, it's the only way to go. He
- 9:37Speaker 2: only bummer is when you can't find a place, you know,
- 9:39Speaker 2: when something's booked up.
- 9:40Speaker 1: But that's happened like once in my entire life, That's
- 9:42Speaker 1: what they said. What do you do if you can't
- 9:44Speaker 1: find a room? That's happened once in sixty years of well,
- 9:47Speaker 1: I have been traveling, but in forty years of traveling
- 9:50Speaker 1: like this, it's happened to me one time, So it's
- 9:53Speaker 1: not like it's a common occurrence. I like the if
- 9:55Speaker 1: you're in the mood to drive, you drive a long way,
- 9:57Speaker 1: you get tired early, you shut her down. All a good,
- 10:00Speaker 1: get a room, Yeah, fantastic.
- 10:02Speaker 2: It's difficult when you have a plan to be able
- 10:05Speaker 2: to stop at that one quirky place that you see
- 10:08Speaker 2: and you go, oh, that'd be really cool. I hope
- 10:09Speaker 2: to stop there again on the way back. You never do,
- 10:11Speaker 2: never ever have a chance to get back to it.
- 10:14Speaker 2: So correct lack of planning allows the spontaneity, and that
- 10:18Speaker 2: that allows for those moments that you'll never forget.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I didn't know Cody, Wyoming has a rodeo every single
- 10:24Speaker 1: night all summer long. It's America's Rodeo. I didn't know that. Yeah,
- 10:28Speaker 1: and we saw the big banner when we pulled in
- 10:30Speaker 1: the town. I thought we're doing that. I got a
- 10:31Speaker 1: hotel room. We went to the rodeo that night. It
- 10:34Speaker 1: was super fun. The kids had a good time. It
- 10:36Speaker 1: was awesome. Yeah. I love traveling like that. So are
- 10:39Speaker 1: you doing anything at all, Michaelangelo during vacation. I'll do something.
- 10:43Speaker 3: You know it'd be much. You know, the show's not live,
- 10:45Speaker 3: so to be relaxing.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Do you read? Do you stare at the wall? No,
- 10:50Speaker 1: I'll read. I mean it'll be great, it'll be great.
- 10:54Speaker 1: What are you doing Anson, I'll be here with Michael.
- 10:58Speaker 2: He usually holds me for a minut hours and just
- 11:00Speaker 2: kind of reassures me that everything will be all right.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I can't really leave. I need his reassurance, I need
- 11:05Speaker 2: his warmth, I need his musk.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Have been waiting for you to leave town, Jack. We
- 11:13Speaker 1: will leave on musk. There's no doubt about that. Let's
- 11:16Speaker 1: end this on musk. Good Lord, Well, I guess that's it.
