- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday the 29th of April.
- 0:16Which would you believe is International Dance Day?
- 0:20That's right. Today is the day that all around
- 0:23the world people celebrate the arts.
- 0:25The mystery of dancing. If you mean it's more of a
- 0:28mystery than an art. We were at a wedding not long
- 0:31ago and I was watching people on the dance floor and most of them
- 0:35were absolutely terrible dancers.
- 0:37However, they were just shaking their stuff, having a great time
- 0:41and I thought, yeah, I've been doing it all wrong.
- 0:43It's not about how impressive you are.
- 0:46It's about losing yourself in the music, in the rhythm and
- 0:50having a great time. All these health benefits
- 0:52involved in dancing, You can read about it, boy, there's
- 0:56lots. But dancing, who knew that was
- 0:58the thing today? So maybe you could even learn a
- 1:01new dance hop on YouTube, find a new dance, learn it with your
- 1:04family, however you want to do it.
- 1:06Happy International Dance day. And as we continue reading the
- 1:11book of first Peter, we have now entered a section where Peter is
- 1:16urging people to continue following the social customs of
- 1:21the day. And so now we're getting into an
- 1:23area where he will address wives and husbands and all Christians
- 1:28and how they are to obey each other and friends.
- 1:32The emphasis in Peter writing the section is to ensure that as
- 1:36people live out their new Christian lives of freedom that
- 1:40they continue to fit into the social structure that is the
- 1:44world around them in a way that doesn't upset and get the nose
- 1:49out of joint of all the people who live around them.
- 1:51So that they can still relate and still share this incredible
- 1:54good news. So as we read this, if it jaxes
- 1:57with our modern ears and it sounds all completely wrong and
- 2:01archaic. Now you understand the
- 2:03motivation behind why Peter writes us and why it's included
- 2:06in this letter. So let us read together friends
- 2:09first, Peter chapter 3. In the same way you wives must
- 2:24accept the authority of your husband's.
- 2:27Then, even if some refuse to obey the good news, your godly
- 2:31lives will speak to them without any words.
- 2:35They will be won over by observing your pure and reverend
- 2:38lives. Don't be concerned with the
- 2:41outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewellery
- 2:44or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves
- 2:48instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading
- 2:52beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit which is so precious to
- 2:57God. This is how the holy women of
- 3:00old made themselves beautiful. They put their trust in God and
- 3:04accepted the authority of their husbands.
- 3:06For instance, Sarah obeyed her husband Abraham and called him
- 3:11her Master. You are her daughters when you
- 3:15do what is right without fear of what your husbands might do.
- 3:20In the same way, you husbands must give honour to your wives.
- 3:24Treat your wife with understanding as you live
- 3:27together. She may be weaker than you are,
- 3:30but she is your equal partner in God's gift of new life.
- 3:35Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered.
- 3:40Finally, all of you should be of one mind.
- 3:44Sympathise with each other, love each other as brothers and
- 3:48sisters, be tender hearted and keep a humble attitude.
- 3:53Don't repay evil for evil. Don't retaliate with insults
- 3:58when people insult you. Instead pay them back with a
- 4:01blessing. That is what God has called you
- 4:05to do and He will grant you His blessing.
- 4:08For the scriptures say, if you want to enjoy life and see many
- 4:13happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips
- 4:17from telling lies. Turn away from evil and do good.
- 4:22Search for peace and work to maintain it.
- 4:26The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and His ears
- 4:30are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns His face
- 4:34against those who do evil. Now, who will want to harm you
- 4:41if you are eager to do good? But even if you are suffering
- 4:45for doing what is right, God will reward you for it.
- 4:49So don't worry or be afraid of their threats.
- 4:52Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life.
- 4:57And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be
- 5:01ready to explain it. But do this in a gentle and
- 5:05respectful way. Keep your conscience clear.
- 5:09Then even if people speak against you, they will be
- 5:12ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you
- 5:16belong to Christ. Remember, it is better to suffer
- 5:20for doing good if that is what God wants, and to suffer for
- 5:24doing wrong. Christ suffered for our sins
- 5:28once for all time. He never sinned, but He died for
- 5:33sinners to bring you safely home to God.
- 5:38He suffered physical death, but He was raised to life in the
- 5:41Spirit, so he went and preached to the spirits in prison those
- 5:48who disobeyed God. Long ago, when God rated
- 5:51patiently while Noah was building his boat, only eight
- 5:55people were saved from drowning in that terrible flood.
- 5:59And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you,
- 6:04not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God
- 6:09from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the
- 6:13resurrection of Jesus Christ. Now Christ has gone to heaven.
- 6:18He is seated at the place of honour next to God and all the
- 6:22angels and authorities and powers except his authority.
- 6:38Jesus, thank you for these words of encouragement to take on a
- 6:43different mantle, to live a different way.
- 6:46And when people in our lives insult us or are rude to us, oh
- 6:52Lord, you know the temptation that burns hot in our hearts and
- 6:56in our heads to put them in their place, to speak harshly
- 6:59back to them. But here you show us a different
- 7:02way, a way of continual kindness and gentleness and responding to
- 7:11sharpness with blessing. Oh Jesus, we need your help.
- 7:16We need your transformation from the inside out so that we can be
- 7:20people who live lives like this. Ah, Lord, continue to soften our
- 7:26spirit. Continue to grow in US the
- 7:30fruits of your spirit, so that that becomes the way that we
- 7:34approach the world and others in it.
- 7:38And thank you that when we do this, people will just be amazed
- 7:43and ask us, ask us why we are this way.
- 7:47And Lord, when these moments happen, give us the words to
- 7:52share, to speak of you and your love and a better way so that
- 7:58the world through us, through your transformation of us, can
- 8:03hear of you and your truth and your love for them as well.
- 8:08So transform us, use us, and guide us in your spirit.
- 8:12Lord Jesus, we pray all of this in your name, Amen.
