- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Genesis thirty-two.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Jacob prepares to meet Esau.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Jacob also left that place.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: While he was traveling, he saw God's angels.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: When he saw them, he said, This is God's camp.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: So Jacob named that place Mahinaam.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Jacob's brother Esau was living in the area called Sir in the hill country of Edom.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Jacob sent messengers to Esau.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: He told them, Tell this to my master Esau.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Your servant Jacob says, I have lived with Libyan all these years.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: I have many cattle, donkeys, flocks, and servants.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Sir, I am sending you this message to ask you to accept us.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: The messengers came back to Jacob and said, We went to your brother Esau.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: He is coming to meet you.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: He has four hundred men with him.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Jacob was very frightened and worried.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: He divided the people who are with him and all the flocks, herds, and camels into two groups.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Jacob thought, If Esau comes and destroys one group, the other group can run away and be saved.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Then Jacob said, God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, Lord, you told me to come back to my country and to my family.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: You said that you would do good to me.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: You have been very kind to me.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: You did many good things for me.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: The first time I traveled across the Jordan River, I owned nothing, only my walking stick.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: But now I own enough things to have two full groups.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: I ask you to please save me from my brother Esau.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: I'm afraid that he will come and kill us all, even the mothers with the children.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Lord, you said to me, I will be good to you.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: I will increase your family and make your children as many as the sands of the sea.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: There will be too many to count.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Jacob stayed in that place for the night.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: He prepared some things to give to Esau as a gift.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: He took two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred female sheep and twenty male sheep.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: He took thirty camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: He gave each flock of animals to his servants.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Then he said to them, Separate each group of animals.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Go ahead of me and keep some space between each herd.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Jacob gave them their orders.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: To the servant with the first group of animals, he said, When Esau, my brother, comes to you and asks you, Whose animals are these?
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Where are you going?
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Whose servant are you?
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Then you should answer, These animals belong to your servant Jacob.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: He sent them as a gift to you, my master Esau, and he also is coming behind us.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Jacob ordered the second, third, and all the other servants to do the same thing.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: He said, You will say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: You will say, This is a gift to you, and your servant Jacob is behind us.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Jacob thought, If I send these men ahead with gifts, maybe Esau will forgive and accept me.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: So Jacob sent the gifts to Esau, but he stayed that night in the camp.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: During the night Jacob got up and began moving his two wives and his two maids and his eleven sons across the Jabak river at the crossing.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: He sent his family across the river.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: He sent across everything he had.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: The fight with God.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: The man fought with him until the sun came up.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: When the man saw that he could not defeat Jacob, he touched Jacob's leg and put it out of joint.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Then the man said to Jacob, Let me go, the sun is coming up.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: But Jacob said, I will not let you go.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: You must bless me.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: And the man said to him, What is your name?
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: And Jacob said, My name is Jacob.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Then the man said, Your name will not be Jacob, your name will now be Israel.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: I give you this name because you have fought with God and with men and you have won.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Then Jacob asked him, Please tell me your name, but the man said, Why do you ask my name?
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Then the man blessed Jacob at that place.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: So Jacob named that place Peniel.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: He said At this place I saw God face to face, but my life was spared.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Then the sun came up as Jacob left Peniel.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: He was limping because of his leg.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: So even today the people of Israel don't eat the muscle that is on the hip joint because this is the muscle where Jacob was hurt.
