- Hemispheric Views 173.mp3 Can you believe that we're like hemispheric views duo again, but now it's the other way? Are you getting sick of this country, Australia? Are you just You know, it's like We're so unreliable. Every time we record we record twice a month. Like, come on, first of all, twice a month. And every time I connect to the call, my only hope is like it's a hope and a dream anyone's gonna be on the other end of this thing at this point, because it's who am I gonna get? I don't know. It's like it's like rolling the dice. We still haven't missed a Fortnite in some way, right? In six years. Something like that. Yeah. Have we not? Has there not been at least one? No, I'm pretty sure. Like someone has been here. And I loved what you did last episode with Andrew. You did put a lot of shit on me, but it was great. Right? Notice I'm saying shit. I might not even bleep it as the editor, 'cause we're explicitly We are we are now explicit somehow, yeah. I don't know how that happened. I'm assuming I know how it happened. Oh, you do? 'Cause I remember these things. I do, yeah. Oh and I'm just gonna blame it on Andrew because now he's not here because I was always bleeping or beeping at the profanities, right? And I'd be listening to and reviewing when Andrew would do one of his edits, which are always lovely by the way. Andrew does a great job. But then it would just be oh shit and there'd be no beep and I was like, Well, I'm following a rule. So I'm gonna say that Andrew got us our triple X podcast rating. I I'll go with that. 'Cause it wasn't me. Couldn't have been me. It's not the person swearing, it's the person editing. Yeah, you drop the F bombs and it's up to the two of us to deal with it. Absolutely. Do you do you think if it if it's beeped, does that still count as as clean? I guess it probably would, right? I think so. Yeah, it's okay. Well, it's it depends how you do it because I bit of behind the scenes for our listeners, right? Hello out there. Um I really enjoy editing those profanities with a beep because particularly when you do it because Andrew, you know, okay, I've just put shit on Andrew, but you know, he doesn't drop as many as what you do. And when you do say the F-word, which I'm not going to say in this case, I really relish cutting just the So it's still very obvious what's being said, but Oh yeah, yeah. So I have to take some responsibility for it. 'Cause if anyone were like listening, you know, like censorship style, they'd be like, hey, wait a minute, they say they're clean, but I can hear like a crazy beep F word in there. It's gotta be automated though, right? Like there's just some machine that's just churning through audio clips and says, Oh, I recognize the waveform for this and now you get an I you would think they would email you or something though and be like, hey, um yeah, you you're no longer a clean clean uh show. So oh well so I guess we're profane now. I'm just why haven't we got an email? I'm disappointed there. Nothing. Nothing. Not a word. I just randomly found it when I was going to look for if there were any new reviews which there were and I should have probably captured to share, but I didn't. And I just saw oh wow, we got the the little E, the d the dirty E, uh we'll call that. I think we're the now the Dirty E podcast. Yeah, so there was the bossy e in spelling and now there's the the dirty e. We've got the dirty E. The dirty E. Yeah. So that's us. So welcome to the the filth that is hemispheric views. Yeah, and I was away because of work. I think two recordings I've missed this year because of work, you know, livelihood and all that. Yeah, I was. And I think Andrew's on holiday now. I I I think it's holiday. He didn't say otherwise. Because that's allowed, apparently. Let me just close the door one sec. So Martin's left, and I just have to say, everyone, there's two hours a month where we record this. You would think that people could be a little bit better about their calendars. Right? And now he's back, so I'll s stop talk I'll stop talking about that now that he's back, but he can hear that later. Oh shit. And now you see you don't even have to edit that now. Cause it's it's we got the big dirty E. We got the big dirty E. Now last time you guys did, which I thought was hilarious, generous for the listeners with QA corner, but hilarious that it was like, what's the answer to this? Oh Martin's not here. Oh. Anyway, so I can see stuff here. What um what did you want to bring up about uh QA corner? I've got I can see stuff about pizza toppings. What's going on here? So we had Q<unk>A corner. I had a call out for uh Q<unk>A because it's been six years and I figured people probably had questions that we most likely didn't have an answer for, but you know, why not? It was either gonna be q and a or it was gonna be mostly q and no a or maybe just all a and no q. We didn't really know, so we just kind of went with it. Um there was a question that came up last time when you were not here. Yeah. That maybe you could lend a little bit of of explanation to. And I'm looking back, I'm looking back, and this is putting up. The origin of the podcast? Is that the one? Yeah. So it was something along the lines of why did we decide to do this? And there had to have been a time at which the three of you were not aware of one another. Yes. Um which that part I think was fine. I think we covered that fairly well. Yes, obviously there was a time. Andrew went into a long thing about how he just worshipped the ground that I stood on and how incredible I was, and he couldn't wait to meet me and like he was just he's still starstruck to this day. Which you can say the beads of sweat on his forehead when we record, like, just being in your aura. Yeah, there is just this like, oh he kind of freezes a little bit each time. Which I, you know, I think it's it's kind of adorable in its own way. But the part about how did it start, we kind of just skated through that and kind of made something up and assumed that you knew better. Well thank you for assuming that you would be correct. Um No, I was listening in the car and just laughing and laughing. I thought it was great. You were generally both kind of correct, the the way that I recall it, and I think you could do digital spelunking and you know, we'll put this stuff in the notes, but the the origin was really when we all discovered each other on micro.blog and the lounge ruminator thing that you referred to, which is the blog that I don't keep up enough with, but did a lot more in the past. I was doing more writing and kind of solo podcasting on that, and I was sharing links, you know, by extension on micro.blog. And I think because I had been quite overt about the fact that I was doing this whole practicing PhD podcasting in public, you know, and doing all that, I then had each of you on for a one-on-one interview on that Lounge Ruminator podcast, which people can still listen to. I can link it in the show notes. And then I think after I, you know, I had done Andrew and I had done you on respective recordings, then it was like, oh well, we've all kind of got this shared interest here. And then that became the three of us doing that initial pilot, which was on lounge ruminator, which is now part of the HV feed. That's episode zero. Yeah. So I'm not taking full credit for it, it just happened to be that I was the one doing that podcasting stuff, and then each of our interests, you know, Andrew's obvious dripping fandom for you. Yeah. All these things kind of coalesced and became the show. And then we went, hey, let's do this. And I'm flabbergasted and grateful that it's been going non-stop for six years. Can I give you real-time follow-up? Um Andrew's not here, but apparently he doesn't have time to record the show, but he does have time to post movie reviews on letterboxed as we're recording right now. So I just wanna I just wanna let you know that that's happening in real time. Look, I know we probably are viewed as a bit slow, you know, if we're talking about Apple fandom stuff or having come from that 'cause that was another part of the origin of the show. Like we're all Mac fans and that was where that international Mac nerd's title came from early on from the pilot. But no one can claim that we're not, you know, able to do like live tweeting old style like live blog posting or or or news updates. 'Cause that's what you just did, right? This is breaking news of the moment, just not what anyone asked for Breaking news that people will hear in approximately a week. Yeah, exactly. Oh I forgot that bit. Um, yeah, we always talk about something that happened about a week ago and then it doesn't come out for about another week. So it's like it's hard hitting action-packed news broadcasting is really what it is. But look, I'd like to think that it encourages our listeners out there to go back through the show notes. You put a lot of loving effort into that and then they have to work out what's current, what's in the past, what are they talking about. And uh yeah. There's a lot of notes and a lot of episodes. Just get in there. Hundred and seventy three as of today. So That's right. Um we're kinda already in QA. Do you wanna can I can I hit you with a few more Q and A's while we're here? We got I love that now it's biased towards the other side and people have to piece it together over two episodes. It's a great HV approach. It's like burden is on you, listener, to work it out. Absolutely. So question Yeah. Will Martin go through a graduation ceremony? Will he be wearing an old fashioned hat and can we see photos? Great question. So first of all, m my thesis is currently under examination. It can take several months. And assuming that, you know, I am conferred, which means, or the work is conferred, which means yes, tick. Sure. You know, this is passed. After whatever, I suppose, inevitable fixes or reviews I have to address 'cause you know it comes back to and they say, Oh, can you fix this or update that and I'm sure that'll come back in that form uh then yes, there would be an eventual graduation ceremony assuming all is successful. And I think there would be some sort of silly hat. So So if a if a nice photo can be taken in the silly hat, then I'm happy to provide it. I'm very excited for the for the fancy hat. Okay, that's good. Yeah, sure. Um when will Jason visit Australia? Comma. How many payphones will he tag, comma, and why not go on the way to Japan? Question mark. Didn't you already addressed this? I I think think I did at some point, but I think it's yeah, I'll revisit it. Um will I go or when will I go? I don't know when, but yes I will. Right. How many payphones? As many as frickin' possible. We have a few of them, yes. And why not go on the way to Japan? That's a perfectly valid question. It was actually part of a plan in the past and didn't work out for reasons. The biggest issue, honestly, is that we're very far away. Yeah, I can get there, but then the two of these assholes are on opposite ends of the goddamn country. So there's not like a middle, there's no middle to just meet up. The thing is 72 trillion kilometers across. It's big, yeah. So like I'm I it logistically it's it's difficult. If it was like, oh we're you know say you to LaRu Jason, that'll be easy. Yeah, like if they were both on the west or the east, done deal. I'm there, I'm in, we're good, but it's like this whole thing where ideally the three of us would be in one place, but again, there's not really a middle that makes sense. So then it's an east or a west, but then somebody's gotta go all the way one way or the other, or I've got to go to do both where I have to now go to the east, then to the west, and then b it logistically it just is difficult, which has proven to be you know a problem for making this happen. I don't blame you. That's fine. And uh look I, mean a lot of people would point out and I'm not saying this to have a dig at WA by any means, but Perth, I don't know if you know this, Joseph, but Perth is I'm pretty sure still the most remote like urban center or capital city because it's the state capital of Western Australia of anywhere in the world. That makes sense, yeah. Yeah, like the east coast, because Australia's population is mainly around the coastal areas. There are lots of people inland and, you know, right in you know places like the red centre but they're sparsely populated mm-hmm like lots of towns and and and inland cities but it's all pretty much around the coast and most of that is on the east coast so Perth is kind of like yes out there doing its own thing. And if you want to go somewhere like Broome, which is way up north, that's a big commitment as well. So a lot of people on the East Coast would just say, Yeah, Andrew should just come here. Sorry, perfect. I would tend to agree. I would actually I would love to actually do something in the actual center that makes absolutely no sense for anyone. Yeah, that's what I meant by Ola Ru. Yeah. Just so it's difficult for both of you to get to some weird place that has potentially nothing in it and that would be great. Well Uluru would be the ultimate meeting place. Uh both for podcast co-hosts and with regard to like the whole First Nation stories around it. It is you know what I'm talar? No. Other others call it airsrock. That's the colonial name, I suppose you can say. Say what is it called again? Uluru. U-L-U-R-U. Probably one of the most spectacular places on earth, which as an Australian, I'm very disappointed not to have been able to visit personally. But this is incredible. Why don't we go here in northern Delta? That's what I mean. It's one of the most unbelievable it's like if people listening don't know what it is, it's essentially like a gigantic monolith in the middle of the Australian desert. Ayers Rock? Is that am I saying that right? the white person who claimed to have discovered it thousands of years after it was already used by the local First Nations people. But it's always rock. Oh gotcha. Okay. Could we record on top of that rock? Uh you're not supposed to climb it. People use a in a way. That's a good thing no no. But also as a safety issue. Would it give me like next to it? Like off to the side. Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, absolutely. But um yeah, awesome place. It's almost kind of like an iceberg in a way, in the sense that it actually goes well under the ground as well. So yeah, as an Australian, I know all these things about it, but I've never had the chance to do it. Is that like a feasible place you can get to? Oh yeah, it's visited by many people. It's like a tourist hotspot. As long as you're culturally sensitive. Oh, okay. Well then we I think we just figured it out. That's where we're going. Andrew's like, Jesus Mart, what have you done? Oh this is done. This is gorgeous. Yeah, it's an unbelievable place. Alright, well that's settled. Sweet. Easy, yeah. Catch you to LaRue next week. Yeah. Glad we got that figured out. And we'll have some breaking news ready, yeah. I could probably get a direct flight, probably Portland to there. That's easy. That's probably right. Quantas is doing it every you know, every two hours. Yeah. So the ten o'clock flight or the noon flight. Uh we'll see. Whatever. Okay. Alrig.ht Now just on from that, I do recall there was a question last time about whether you fold your pizza. Is that correct? There was. There was a folding pizza question which then led to a follow-up question of pizza toppings, but I think maybe we talked about that in the past. I don't recall. Where do you fall on folded pizza? So I don't fold it as I'm eating it, unless, as you both said, there's risk of like things falling off. But I do love, as you said, a calzone or a calzone. Calzone. If it's done with intention and it's encased, there's a great restaurant down the road from us that uh makes a mean one of those. Uh I'm I'm big on that. But no, I'm gonna go fold it. Yes. Yeah, it's very abusive. Yeah. Yeah. That's what they tend to do, those Italian calzones. So a p a purposeful fold is fine, but you're you're kind of against the the the optional fold. Well it's like a calzone as we um is made to be I don't want to say it's like a pocket, but it's almost like its own little pie or curry puff. It's made in a way that encases all of the ingredients. I I don't order a pizza to eat it like a sandwich. Or a wrap. Do you know what I mean? Oh god, don't we can't get into the whole like what is a sandwich? We can't do that. no no I'm not doing that. Yeah. Don't do that. Because when I bite down, I ideally want to experience the texture and the flavor of the topping. I'm just getting really nitpicky because that's the show, right? There's a note about anchovies and pineapple. Yeah, look, I like salty things. Things like anchovies and sardines and stuff are fine, but I'm not really big on them on pizza because they tend to overrule everything, which I feel is what people think about pineapple, but I think pineapple is good on pizza if you don't c like I'm not I think people who don't like pineapple think it just takes over. I'm not saying you have an entire layer of pineapple. If you just dotted around the place, it's a sweet little surprise. Yeah. it's like you got like a little metal detector on the beach and you're just kind of like doot doot doot doot doot doo oh p pineapple found. Exactly. See, it's just a moment of joy. And uh funnily enough, a few years ago, my colleagues, uh, you know, my team and I, we put together, I'll pop it in the show notes, on a work trip in New Zealand, we asked people at the industrial sites we were visiting whether they liked pineapple on pizza because my two colleagues uh are not big on it at all, but I like it, and then we kept a bit of a pineapple counter across all of our interviews and you can watch in the show notes there and see if the pineapple people won or the pineapple hiders won. I hope the pineapple people won. What do you like with your like it it obviously it's not just like cheese and pineapple? What's your kind of what's your ideal situation with with with pineapple? Well I've always been partial to the super supreme. Supreme pizzas, assuming we're speaking the same pizza language here. And then just add pineapple to that. Yeah, it's like you've got your mushrooms, maybe there's some capsicum, whatever, and you just dot a bit of pineapple on there and it's like, oh, you know, people pretend like sweetness doesn't belong on pizza, but tomato bases or tomato paste is naturally sweet, right? Capsicums have a sweetness. So I understand that pineapple's a tropical fruit, but to kind of go like, oh no, you can't have this, it's like in Seinfeld, it's like, no, you can't put cucumber on a pizza, but there are people who put zucchinis on pizzas. And I know zucchini and cucumber aren't the same thing, but aesthetically they're kind of similar. They have that kind of wateriness. So I think people make up these rules about what does and doesn't belong on a pizza. Yeah. Yeah. my go to is a local place. They do a pepper pina pino. Wow. I think I'm saying that right. Where it's pepperoni, pineapple, jalapeno. Wow. Full on. Okay. Which is a you got the hot, you got the sweet, you got the the salty from the pepperoni. Incredible. Absolutely great. You bring up a great point about pepperoni because this is just a sign of American influence in Australia, right? We have what you would call branded pepperoni pizza, right? Whether it's a chain like Domino's or local small businesses or pizza by the slice. Yeah, standard basic pepperoni pizza. But you don't actually, we don't do pepperoni here. On anything else. no. Pepperoni I think is more of a sausage that is specific to, you know, Italian migrants in the US. it's a kind it's a kind of sausage that doesn't really happen here. We have so many different types of deli meat, but normally we're having forms of salami. Okay, sure. But because but because it's presented that way, everyone says, Oh, I'll have the pepperoni pizza, but it's not actually pepperoni. So I think the oiliness and the flavour of it is actually different because we have a different deli meat technically. But no one says I'm gonna have a salami pizza. Yeah, that's when that's technically what it is. Doesn't roll off the tongue like a pepperoni pizza. Yeah, exactly. And you don't get to say pepperoni. Yeah, pepperoni. Um We're very Italian this week. Oh, I I'm b big on that. We'll just do it yeah. Calazone. Italian show, that's what we are now. So did we address all that? Is that good? Are you satisfied? Good. I uh yeah, I think so. We're gonna ki QA corner is here to stay as long as we actually get cues. We'll start getting questions like are you going to actually do QA corner when all three of you are present? We don't have the answer to that. Are you ever gonna stop doing QA quarter? No, because you just submitted a Q. So that's your fault. Good luck. Thumbs up. Speaking of Italian, I think I've talked about this before. It's in our forum. I just wanted to give a PSA for Puzzmo. Yeah. The lovely little puzzle collection website with new puzzles every day. If you're not playing Puzzmo, you probably should. It's a lot of fun. That's it. It's a PSA. That's probably the most efficient PSA we've ever had. I know. I'm I'm here to be efficient. I could be even more efficient. Wait, there's another one. Do you want another one? Go for it. I probably actually already did this like episodes ago. Andrew's not here, so we can talk about camera stuff a little bit. Off you go. The KF Concepts magnetic lens cap. Go get one. Just get one if you use a camera at all. It's little tiny ring. Screws on to your lens. The lens cap is magnetic to that. Chuck it on, chuck it off. It's God, it's just so good. None of that clippy crap. It's not falling off in a bag. It's just great. Go get one. And you could put filters onto the same magnetic threads if you want. It's fantastic. So just to ruin your efficiency here, I have one question. It could become two questions, but that's your thing. We'll see. You're gonna need to up that to at least two. Alright, well I'll ask this one and then come up with another one. My first question was are you updating all of the lenses that you use with this magnetic system? Because I know you moved to the hustle blood and you've got your main like prime lens, but are you are you doing this for other things that you own or is it just as needed? Fortunately I only have one lens right now. So the Right, but so just for one system, the one lens. Okay. But if I had a second lens, which I may in the future I would get the same thing for it because it's it's that great. Alright. Second question just popped in my head. Look at that. Two questions. Second question two questions. Based on a discussion that I was having with you separately in the chat, are you actually going to buy said second lens? Because you were you were thinking about this. You were seeking my counsel. And I think in your mind, do you just want to go, Martin, just say yes, I need to buy this right now? No, I actually legitimately wanted some some pushback on it because I was I was going down two different two very different paths and I wasn't sh n neither one felt like the right decision and I was like someone else will hear me talk you know I, sent you a text message it, was like twenty thousand words. It was like a novel. It was enjoyable. Uh and and you replied and I I think we got to the answer that we needed. So you're seeing through on on that one. Yes. Yeah, the thirty-five to one hundred, I think is the correct decision. Based on many things. Now for people who aren't camera nerds or maybe particularly interested, they're they're gonna hear it anyway. So hustle blood, that's medium format. So equivalent to like full frame of what people would know like Canon, Sony, Nikon, etc. Uh that's like actually technically lower numbers. So it's like a zoom that goes from a kind of wide to portrait. Like 28 to 93 or something like that. Yeah. And this thing's like the size of like a space shuttle, right? This lens. It's larger. Yeah, it's I would say it's probably a soda can. That's not bad. Oh, an American soda can. Well, no, not a big goal. It's not it's not it's not a seven eleven big gulp. Like a normal uh to to put it in in your in your uh vernacular three hundred fifty five milliliter can Okay that's maybe a little longer than that. That's okay. Alright. Cool. So you're gonna strap you're strapping a soda can to the front of your camera basically. You're still gonna do it? Because I know you were hunting for it. Yeah, I'm just waiting for one to become available. Very good. Okay. And then do you think that will will that scratch the itch? You'll have your favorite prime? Favorite prime and then some zoom for some reach and some wide. It gives me the kind of other ends of the prime which is nice. Because I imagine because I haven't used this particular camera, but because they let in so much more light, right? It's kind of like using a prime but a zoom version from other systems. Kind of, yeah. And the F-stop like it f-stop's not even really the same. Like an F2.8 is kind of more like a F2. Yeah. In a full like that even changes. Everything, everything's weird. So it's kind of like if you're happy to carry a around camera of this heft, right? Or density, then you've essentially cut down the number of lenses that you need. Go from three to one. Wow. But I think the fifty-five will be kind of the mainstay for for every day 'cause it's just it's the perfect lens. I just love it. The way that I type this next thing in the notes sounds like a lot of time. It sounds like it sounds like A very enjoyable B absolute torture or C not even what it's what's written down here. Yeah, so I was wondering what would maybe come to your mind when you saw this written, and just for the benefit of everyone listening, what I wrote for for Jason today is just the words sixteen hours of organ. And you're like, what, a liver? A more private one that we don't want to mention? That'd be exhausting. Are you sore? You okay, go to the that's not Martin visiting me for sixteen hours in Oregon. This is organ meat. That's right, organ, like organ meat. Yes. Yes. Uh but no it's organ grinder. Exactly. It's not organ meat or grinding or or even organ. It's the instrument. The organ. Now, when I was away, I wanted to actually give you an idea of what happened when I was away. I was away for work. It was in Brisbane. My colleagues and I were doing some photo and video work at different sites for the company that we work for up there. And when I was there, a thing called the Brisbane Festival was on. It was wrapping up. It was the last night, it was the Sunday night before we had to go to work the next morning. I thought after dinner with them, I thought I'm gonna roam around and check this thing out because it's kinda like arts, culture, food, things along the uh the river there on South Bank in Brisbane, beautiful area. And there was all this cool stuff. Like there was this giant side. Exactly. Okay. not the other side where lots of money comes in from digging stuff out of the ground. Right. the other stuff.. Right We weren't on the other side. Yeah, so they had this giant sing-along outside which was like mass karaoke into these I think you would have found it hilarious, these microphones kind of coming out of the ground, and they were singing things like Toto's Africa. It was quite cheesy. Love that's all. They had yeah, they had they were going for like all the the crowd favourites and also some local ones that people like. They had like a bit of a uh a water laser show thing which I only caught part of. I didn't realise that it was actually a special thing. I was more part of the the ambiance, but apparently that was the thing that I should have looked at for longer. They had like a jazz band playing in all these installations, but then in the Queensland Performing Arts Centre or QPAC as it's known. Did anyone come from a land down under when you were there? Uh not in terms of the song that I heard, but yes, everyone who was there appeared to come from a land down under some which way that had to take place. Okay. Yeah, we were from down under, but we don't think of it that way because that's where we are. We don't think that's w yeah, you can't be down under if you're there. I yeah Exactly. To be down under yourself would be like I don't know what that means. Terrible. Um yeah, and and I spotted like in the program after walking around that I could catch seemingly the last hour inside the QPAC building of a 16-hour performance of the entire collection of Bach's music for organ played by a gentleman called Dr. Calvin Bowman. And I went And he played the whole sixteen hours straight. Right. So it was running from six AM.. to 10 p.m. I assume he was allowed to have a toilet break, but apparently, yes, in the program with all the things listed, I'll provide stuff in the notes. He was playing the full Bach collection for organ from the that time to that time. And I thought, wow, I better go and rush to get this 'cause it was free, it was part of the festival. You just walk into the beautiful concert hall and this guy's up. He was going for sixteen hours. Like you could cut off but I didn't I was like I've missed like fifteen sixteenths of it. Oh sure, you show up for my last hour. Thanks. He seemed quite appreciative that people were still there because I wasn't there for the rest of the day but I assumed there were more people because you know it's a Sunday night, right? People are gonna, you know, they got school and work the next morning. But um there were you know there were still people in there by the 16th hour, and it was amazing. And he had a woman next to him dedicated to page turning. Oh man. Turning pages for 16 hours? Again, I assume that they weren't taking shifts. She would have been exhausted. And when he got up at the end, like you could tell that he couldn't w qualitek properly. He's just immediately hooked up to an IV, he's off to the emergency room. But it was impressive because I caught the last hour and it was it was ethereal. It was majestic, it was meditative, it was unbelievable. So I only caught a fraction of it. The first the first 15 hours though? Total crap. Oh yeah, yeah, I I missed all the the warm-up period. Yeah. Getting everything dialed in and and sounding right. The last hour was really where it where everything's was really singing. Exactly. And I took a couple of photos and a video and I'll I'll pop it in the notes. So obviously it's not quite l like being there, but I just feel very fortunate to have just stumbled into this thing. I'm like, this guy's obviously like he knows his stuff. I didn't hear him put a foot or finger wrong because you know you play with both on the organ that's in in the wall. But uh yeah just one of those chance encounters of like wow there's someone who does this people and he's impressive it's it was genuinely impressive so hats off to Dr. Calvin Bowman. Dr. Calvin, friend of the show. Yeah, pretty cool. Anyway, I just thought I'd bring it up because you know who doesn't love 16 hours of organ? Can you I just like what could you do for 16 hours? Even s even sleeping for 16 hours would be difficult. You probably remember. I tried to do 24 hour live stream for something. I forget why. Yes, I remember. It was something to do with I don't know. It made sense at the time. I don't know what it was for. But I think I only made it like about 17, 18 hours. Mm-hmm. And that was just the worst. I was done at like eight. It was really bad. Yeah, it's hard. It's not I don't I don't advise it. I could do it with other people. I think if there was other people it would be doable, but just being by yourself for that long is super boring. Yeah, you need to have like a team effort. So I think it's something like the organ, things like that can only really happen for that long. Do you think he tried for seventeen hours at one point and just couldn't do it? And he's like, no, we gotta scale this back to sixteen. I just seventeen is just a bridge too far. Yeah, it's like I'm not going to do the home demo versions of Bach's things that he never published. I'll just stick to the actual published collection. Just the actual catalogue we're gonna do that and we're done. We're not doing we're not doing the B sides here. Yeah, we're not doing his grungy teen period where he had stuff, you know in the drawer that he never shared with anybody. Grungy Bach. You remember those? Those were those were great. Oh my god, those are just so good. Yep. They were just raw. You know, just raw energy coming from Bach. What was this? Another thing that was 16 hours? I don't know. Uh yeah, I didn't really quantify this. I just put down phone stuff because I had to write it down quickly. Phone stuff. Yeah, and you can you can throw your own phone stuff if in if you like. That could be many many things. there's phone. there's stuff. Yeah. There's phone stuff. Had I written phones and stuff, that could have complicated it further. That would have been another 16 hours of show, probably. Yeah, it would have been very difficult. But look, the phone stuff is basically I just wanted to share as I did on Mastodon a little while ago in a quick reply or post, replace the battery and my iPhone thirteen mini, which people probably going, Martin, you're still using that? Isn't it too small for your hands? First of all my hands are not as big as Andrew's. I'm pretty sure it was Andrew's hand that was used in the iPhone duo like imagery. You know that controversial thing about does anyone have a hand that big? Super large hand, yeah. Yeah, no, that was no photoshopping. They just asked Andrew to take a picture of his hand and then they put the duo in there. Yeah. That's the only photoshopping. And even then they had to size down the hand. Correct. Yeah. That's probably why it looked weird. Because like shouldn't be like twice the size of what it is? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Um anyway yes. They had to circle the basketball and do the little remove part and then they stuck a phone in there. This is all great evidence for Apple's AI strategy, right? It's just photo removal stuff for Andrew's hand. Look how well we replaced the basketball with a phone. You can't even tell. Like that's how good our shit is. Exactly. Um yeah, so uh replaced the battery. It's on iOS twenty seven. It's essentially like a new phone. Oh it runs twenty seven. I didn't know. It does. Yeah, no, eleven and later runs twenty seven. And you're on the thirteen. Correct. So I've still got a couple of years of me, I reckon. All right. Nice. Um so I just want to say, you know, years ago when there was more uh low hanging fruit in the feature set, I was on the kind of oh yeah, phone contract's up, I'll get a new one each two years, but haven't done that in a while, and I feel like I'm taking this phone to the grave. I don't know if they're gonna do a phone this size again. And the duo kind of says Sorry, you need to have something the size of a small maybe like your bread plate at a fancy dinner, right? Phones as you know them before we have a small phone again. Yeah. And I'm not against people having large phones if that's what they want. I just want something that I can type with one-handed. You know, like when they had um Remember those they seem very quaint now, but that iPhone 5 era thumb reachability ad, not the reachability feature where you swipe down and it pulls down the interface, like what happened with you know iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and all that. But you know, I loved that. And that's kind of what the iPhone 13 mini is like for me, albeit slightly larger as a screen than what was on the uh on the five. But I feel like Apple's moved on from that. So anyway, I just want to say I'm thrilled that we've had this kind of I know you cringe to hear it kind of quote unquote snow leopard-esque you know update and you can question the uh the quality of things like I don't know bugs and all that stuff but um yeah it has been my experience with the phone. it has actually rejuvenated my phone along with the battery replacement. Yeah, I mean I I have found 27 to just be 26 finished. Yes. Great way to put it. push it's it's 26.5 but we can't call it that because that doesn't work for marketing. Exactly. 27. Add a new number. And to conclude the phone stuff, uh Natasha actually got a quote unquote new phone because she was on an 11 Pro, which she bought the year before the pandemic officially started, like in the West, right? We're talking 2019. And so she's had that running for seven years now, I think, and has replaced it in September, around the time that she I think got that phone. Anyway, but she didn't really want, and I I don't blame her, she didn't want the newest phone or the n or something more recent. So she found on this uh great, you know, there are lots of sites like this on a kind of legit refurbishment website. She got this refurbished iPhone 14 Pro and paid a fifty dollar extra like fee to have a new official battery put in it. And so she essentially has a brand near mint condition iPhone 14 Pro for under a thousand dollars. You know, Australian dollars. And so yeah, that's our phone stuff. Not really exciting for anyone who's listening, but my message is go buy cool new stuff if you need or want it, but if you don't, there are cool options out there to keep it running. Yeah, I I was surprised that you said that it uh you that yours was doing twenty-seven. That was gonna be my only thing of like, ah, but now you're gonna be like not that you're missing anything, quote unquote, but like it always is kind of like ah shit. Now I don't like for whatever reason I'm not gonna get the latest security stuff or whatever. But yeah, if you're still getting that, then who cares? Without going down a turtle rabbit hole, I will just make a quick statement of Natasha and I are actually quite happy to have phones that do not run the uh the thing that Apple's most keen to market these days. So all the Apple intelligence slash Siri AI stuff, we couldn't give a stuff about that. Um and frankly I'm quite disappointed uh that Apple has removed that easy toggle. So I did have to go through the system and turn off things that I don't want 'cause I don't need it. I don't want it. If you listening, love it, fantastic, but it's just not something that I feel improves my life. It's just something that I now have to think or worry about. Well y you have to there can't be a one toggle because you as a whoever's the product the person in charge of that product, you have to show quote unquote engagement. Yes. So you have to make it like that's just that's a business. Like you need your spreadsheet to show that engagement is up. Regardless of what that means, like it has to go. The trend line has to be up into the right. I will say the the thing, like most things don't bother me like okay, I'll turn that off, that's fine, that's easy. But something that really gave me the shits, and this is on the Mac, I don't know if you encountered this or you've left it on or turned it off, but have you noticed the thing where when you go to Mac OS 27 or Golden Gate when, you highlight text, it pops up now with that automatic little intelligence symbol. Do you have that on? Uh hold on, I'm highlighting text. Does it not work in this? It may not work in this. Just highlighting text. It could be in text edit, it could be in your browser, it could be in TOT, it could be in pages. That's interesting then, because I don't know what you had set up before, but on my work Mac, which I updated, for example, you know, the one that I carry in a bag, the Mac meeting in a bag. Oh, we all know about that. Um, I highlighted text and it's come out with like these things so you can do prompts or Apple intelligence stuff to your text and I was like, I've been using a Mac pretty much my entire life and you right click, you mean? Or just literally when you're done with it? No, I just highlight I highlighted a sentence. I was like, What do you want to do with this? I'm like, nothing. Go away. And you have to go through like the Siri AI, like Siri and search settings to then find the particular thing which is turn off the stuff that does things with text. I have no idea what that is. I everything I highlight just is highlighted text. Yeah. Anyway, it's off now, but I found that I know it's probably not the exact word, but I found it kind of dark patternish or deliberately hidden that it's like, you've been computing your whole life, I never needed this, but now we're gonna hide it in this kind of weirdly worded setting after we turn it on automatically when you already had all that stuff turned off. Yeah. it's a hundred percent a product decision to force engagement. Okay. Well anyway I've had my rant and I tried not to take too long. Okay. So thanks for hearing me out on that one. And that is phone stuff. I have one thing to end on that I think is something that I believe this is something that you will appreciate. Go for it. You've heard of the cinema. I am a big fan of the cinema. Yeah. Like as a place, yeah. As a place, yeah, correct. So at our local well no, it's not really our local cinema. It's actually our it's it's the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. So it's a science museum, you know, everybody's got science museums, I think. You kind of know what that is. They do there's a big IMAX screen where they do they'll play, you know, science-y stuff like this is the T-Rex thing, or appears something about sharks. You know, the usual kind of stuff you would expect. But they also do regular movies from time to time. Um, which is very cool. It's a very it's a cool theater. It's big IMAX screen. Seating's great. It's incredibly inexpensive to go to a movie. It's like nine dollars to go to a movie, which is crazy. Their popcorn is delicious. I'm a big popcorn fan. That's not even what I'm here to talk about. The this thing that they do, they do this this special thing like once or twice a month, and it's called Real Eats. So R E E L, like a film reel eats. And the whole premise behind this thing, and I may have talked about this in the past, so stop me if I have, but I think so. What they do is they'll pick a film, whatever the film is, it doesn't really matter. But then they will have food themed to the film that you eat that specific food at a given point during the film as you're going through. So there's like eight to ten items. You'll get like a full-on like lunch tray. All you'll go through the line, get all the different food stuff you have to get for the film. You'll go into the movie, you'll watch the film, and then down at the very bottom left, like very unobtrusive, there's another little mini projector that will pop up the number of the thing you're supposed to eat and kind of give us little idea of like why it's relevant or like why it's kind of clever that this is the thing you're gonna eat. And you go through the whole movie, so you're kind of you're enjoying a movie, you've got snacks, it's tied into the film in in a way that makes sense. And it's just like a whole I don't know it's if I th I find it to be a very unique way to go to a movie uh and enjoy, even if it's a movie you've already seen, which usually it's not going to be like, you know, the movie the new Spider-Man that came out last week. It's gonna be like, you know, older movies you've been doing. It's like Saint 4, 8 spiderwebs, you know. Yeah, exactly. But it's just like a super fun way to watch a movie and I've not heard or seen that anywhere else ever in my life other than this place. And I thought you know if anybody's gonna like this, Martin's gonna like this. What did you watch? Uh this last one was Crazy Rich Asians. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. So did you have things from Singapore? Like Singapore. Okay, that's interesting. It was like Sing there was uh Singapore cookies at one point that kind of tied in with the film. Um like a sparkling they had like a non-alcoholic sparkling wine for like when they were doing a big champagne thing. Like it just it all they brought out the the the spoilers, there was a like an emerald ring, so they had like a uh apple sour ring candy as like a tie-in. Just super fun to like have and they're all in little containers. So if you're if you have some patience and not look at everything before the film happens. It's a surprise as you're going. Yeah, like provided it's unobtrusive and not terribly distracting, that sounds great because the thing that I like about the cinema, although like I'm happy just to enjoy the film and have popcorn, that's easy. If it's treated as an event, something that you actually go out for to be social or to experience something that you otherwise wouldn't at home, that's the point. It's like going to see, you know, a live performance at the theatre. You go because you get something that you can't get at home. So when people go, oh cinema, I'd just rather watch it on Netflix or something. Okay, yeah, fair enough if you just want to lounge around, but uh isn't it fun to go and be with people? Yep. Do something outside, you know, in a way. So that's cool. Um, I'll have to check out if something like that exists here. And like everybody's eating the same thing at the same time, obviously. So it's like this group thing, yeah. And they're gonna have 70 millimeter terminator, so that's coming out. Oh awesome. Okay. Like the original. Yeah. Fantastic. What would you eat? Didn't know you could even get that. No, this one's just a regular movie. Oh okay, it was just like Okay. Oh boy. It's like oh yeah. He conducts you know, sort of like personal eye surgery in the mirror. You know, pick up your fish eyeball or something. something have i have i chosen the correct one or did i do something about number two no that's the arm i'm losing track there's some gouging of some sort yeah there's there's blood and guts and and yeah yeah so yeah that's it that's all I got that's our notes. do we have a final message for Andrew? Pfft No, he's probably off posting on letterboxed, so he probably won't even probably won't even listen to this episode. Well you did warn him in our chat beforehand that he would be demoted if he didn't turn up. So what that looks like in the uh upcoming HR performance review, we shall see. We'll see. Yeah. This could be this could be a pay decrease, this could be a title uh decrement. We don't know. We don't know what it's gonna be yet. We'll find out in the Oh well, he had it coming. Sucks for him. Thanks, Andrew. Three, two, one, star.
