- 0:13Welcome to Just Be True, a soul -led podcast.
- 0:17I'm Summer and I am so grateful that you're here
- 0:19with me today. Today we're going to be talking
- 0:22about mastering your boundaries. So we've all
- 0:28Know the need to move beyond why boundaries are sacred
- 0:31and into how to actually implement them into
- 0:35real life Because knowing something doesn't always
- 0:38translate into living it So today we're going
- 0:41to talk about that If you've ever known you needed
- 0:45a boundary but struggled with holding that then
- 0:48this episode is for you I've spoken about boundaries
- 0:53in episodes 9 and about protecting your energy
- 0:57in episode 6. So this episode can provide additional
- 1:01clarity and practical actions that you can take
- 1:05to bring in that daily practice of boundaries
- 1:08into your life. So let's get started. Energetic
- 1:13boundaries aren't about becoming distant, cold
- 1:17or unavailable. They're about learning how to
- 1:20stay connected without losing yourself. For many
- 1:25sensitives empathic or intuitive people boundaries
- 1:28weren't modeled instead. We've had to learn them
- 1:32to what we've learned to overcome is being accommodating
- 1:36being available or being understanding of our
- 1:41own at our own expense. So when we begin setting
- 1:46boundaries, it can feel uncomfortable. Even that
- 1:51we are doing something wrong and those on the
- 1:55other side of your boundaries are going to be
- 1:59agitated, irritated, and even upset. That discomfort
- 2:06doesn't mean you're doing it incorrectly. It
- 2:10usually means you're doing something new and
- 2:12often many times right. So let's start with emotional
- 2:20boundaries. Emotional boundaries are about recognizing
- 2:25where your emotions end and someone else's begin.
- 2:31For many people, especially empath, caregivers,
- 2:36and those who learned early on to manage other
- 2:40people's emotions, this line is never clearly
- 2:45drawn. So we were taught that being loving meant
- 2:50being available, absorbing, and fixing. How many
- 2:56of you find yourself as the fixer of situations,
- 2:59right? Over time, that can blur the boundary
- 3:05between compassion and responsibility. A real
- 3:09-life example of this may look like you have
- 3:14a friend who calls you often and when they're
- 3:18overwhelmed, right? You listen, you support,
- 3:24you offer comfort, but when the call ends you
- 3:27feel drained, heavy, maybe even irritated. You
- 3:33may even notice that your mood has shifted for
- 3:36the rest of the day. Carrying the weight of someone
- 3:41else's problems often show up quietly. You replay
- 3:46their words in your mind over and over and over.
- 3:51You feel the tension in your body. You stay emotionally
- 3:55activated long after the conversations ended.
- 4:00That's not impact. That's over identification.
- 4:07An emotional boundary doesn't mean you stop caring.
- 4:11It means you stop carrying. C A R R Y I N G You're
- 4:19carrying the weight of others problems Instead
- 4:24of immediately trying to fix or absorb what they're
- 4:27feeling you might internally remind yourself
- 4:31This is their experience. I can witness it without
- 4:36taking it on This is being the role of an observer
- 4:43Being in the role of observer doesn't mean you're
- 4:47detached or indifferent. It means you're present
- 4:52without merging. You're not merging into their
- 4:56energy. You're not merging into their problems.
- 5:00You're gonna witness it and you're gonna observe
- 5:02it from a safe healthy distance. You can witness
- 5:08someone's pain without stepping into it. You
- 5:11can acknowledge their experience without making
- 5:14it your own Outwardly it may sound something
- 5:19like I hear you that sounds really hard You know
- 5:25or I get what you're going through I'm certain
- 5:30Things will turn better for you Notice what's
- 5:36missing there. You're not fixing it. You're not
- 5:38sobbing it You're not rescuing it. You're present
- 5:43without overextending. You're not saying well
- 5:48how can I help you? What do you need from me
- 5:53to get through this moment? When you say words
- 5:56like that you're stepping into that and you're
- 5:59crossing that healthy boundary. Right? This is
- 6:07often where a lot of times when we don't say
- 6:11those things this is where the guilt shows up
- 6:14and you may say well if i don't fix this i'm
- 6:18being unkind if i don't fix this i'm not carrying
- 6:23enough but fixing isn't always kindness sometimes
- 6:28the way of managing our own discomfort was someone
- 6:32else's emotions So you may find yourself wanting
- 6:36to fix something because you're uncomfortable
- 6:38with the emotions that it brings up within you.
- 6:42But it's not your problem to fix. It's theirs.
- 6:47So learning to be the observer. I'm going to
- 6:50say your body will often tell you when your emotional
- 6:53boundary is needed. Tightness in this chest,
- 6:58shallow breathing, the irritation. Those are
- 7:01signals. They're not flaws. Your body is not
- 7:05betraying you is communicating with you Those
- 7:09sensations are early warnings asking for care
- 7:13not correction When you listen to them you prevent
- 7:18resentment from building up later If you notice
- 7:22yourself holding your breath Leaning forward
- 7:25energetically or tightening your body while someone
- 7:29is sharing That's often a sign that you've crossed
- 7:32from witnessing into carrying. Carrying, right?
- 7:38We're not going to carry anymore. Compassion
- 7:42allows space. Responsibility takes ownership.
- 7:50Emotional boundaries help you stay compassion
- 7:53without slipping into responsibility of emotions
- 7:57that are not yours to resolve. emotional boundaries
- 8:02don't make you less loving they make you more
- 8:07love sustainable so just sit with that for a
- 8:13moment right the next boundary we're gonna talk
- 8:19about is time boundaries mmm gotta love those
- 8:25Time boundaries are about recognizing that your
- 8:29time is also energy in motion. How you spend
- 8:34it directly impacts how you feel, how you show
- 8:37up and how much of yourself you have given. I've
- 8:43had moments in my life where I said yes even
- 8:46though everything in my body was asking for me
- 8:50to rest. I told myself it would be fine that
- 8:54I could push through that I didn't want to disappoint
- 8:57others and in those moments I wasn't checking
- 9:02in with my own energy I was not honoring my own
- 9:08personal needs I was prioritizing expectations
- 9:12of others over my own truth what I noticed was
- 9:20that even when the situation itself wasn't bad
- 9:24I would leave feeling drained disconnected or
- 9:28frustrated not because of the other person not
- 9:34because of who I was around but because I ignored
- 9:38what I already knew I already knew that I needed
- 9:43rest and permission to say no I have learned
- 9:51over the years that it is perfectly fine to say
- 9:55no. You're not less thought of, you're not less
- 10:00loved, you're not less cared for. No is a healthy
- 10:05boundaries for you to set time out for yourself
- 10:10to say no. I need time for myself. so often times
- 10:18time boundaries reveal themselves slowly right
- 10:25they're going to build themselves up with exhaustion
- 10:27and tired they're not going to show up as emergencies
- 10:30they show up as quiet signals we learn to override
- 10:34not loudly not quietly but through exhaustion
- 10:39resentment or a sense of being stretched too
- 10:43thin Tying boundaries begin when you trust yourself
- 10:47enough to pause before responding And you may
- 10:52ask yourself do I really have the capacity to
- 10:56do this right now? Making valuable time for yourself
- 11:03is not something that happens Easily Right it's
- 11:11learning to be able to take care of yourself
- 11:13and to manage your own personal time is something
- 11:18you intentionally protect. For me that has looked
- 11:23something like rest over obligation, creating
- 11:28space in my schedule where it's filled with productivity
- 11:31and allowing moments of quiet without feeling
- 11:35like I need to justify them. Time boundaries
- 11:40sound like that doesn't work for me or I'm not
- 11:46available at that time or I'm not available right
- 11:48now I need to honor my energy today so I'm just
- 11:54gonna chillax I have you know a couple of days
- 12:00of the month that I use as tub time oh I love
- 12:03my tub time I set up a nice little heater in
- 12:09the bathroom I like it nice and warm. It's kind
- 12:12of like our spa, right? I have a really long
- 12:16tub. It's like six feet long and it's a jet tub.
- 12:19It's got you know jets in it and so I have that
- 12:25and I fill it with Epsom salt with eucalyptus
- 12:31in it. I may throw some rosemary oil in there
- 12:34as well. I might even get in the mood to light
- 12:37some candles and I get in there and I just enjoy
- 12:43being in the bath and soaking in that water.
- 12:50That's my time. I don't have my phone with me.
- 12:54I'm cut off from the rest of the world and I
- 12:57am truly enjoying and connecting with that time.
- 13:06and when I've learned that it's okay and even
- 13:08necessary to say no or step away from situations
- 13:12that no longer feel healthy there have been times
- 13:16where I've left early declined an invitation
- 13:20or changed my mind when I felt uncomfortable
- 13:25but you know and I've just had to leave I'm like
- 13:29you know this isn't for me I need to go now this
- 13:32is too overwhelming This is too tiring. This
- 13:35is too much. It's perfectly okay to leave because
- 13:41many times staying would have meant abandoning
- 13:45myself or even you know abandoning yourself.
- 13:50When you honor your time you're not taking anything
- 13:54away from others. You're returning something
- 13:58to yourself and when you make space for yourself,
- 14:05you create room to breathe, recalibrate, and
- 14:09show up with presence, rather than running on
- 14:13empty. Those moments of rest aren't rewards,
- 14:19they're maintenance for your nervous system and
- 14:21your energy. So honor those moments of rest,
- 14:25embrace them and intentionally take time out
- 14:30of your schedule. to recalibrate, to re -energize,
- 14:36to rest and relax. You'll be thankful for it
- 14:41when you do. So our next boundary we're going
- 14:46to talk about, digital boundaries. Oh, today
- 14:49with social media. Let me tell you, digital boundaries
- 14:56are extremely important because access to you
- 14:58is still access. A real -life example of a digital
- 15:04boundary may be that you check your phone first
- 15:06thing in the morning and immediately feel behind,
- 15:11overwhelmed or emotionally activated before you've
- 15:15even had a chance to ground yourself. Your energy
- 15:20is already responding to the outside world before
- 15:24you've even checked in with yourself. Or maybe
- 15:27you feel pressure to respond to messages right
- 15:30away. Even when you're resting, spending time
- 15:34with loved ones are doing something that brings
- 15:37joy to you. Set the digital devices aside. Make
- 15:47time for those important moments. Digital boundaries
- 15:53are not about choosing when and how others have
- 15:57access to you. So your nervous system isn't constantly
- 16:01in a state of reaction. Digital boundaries might
- 16:08look like turning off non -essential notifications.
- 16:13Choosing intentional times to check messages
- 16:16and emails. Protecting your mornings and evenings
- 16:21from outside input. I love this one. turning
- 16:27off read receipts so you don't feel pressure
- 16:30to respond immediately and allowing yourself
- 16:35to enjoy time without your phone in your hand.
- 16:41When we give ourselves permission to step away
- 16:44from our devices even briefly we create space
- 16:48to be fully present time spent resting creating
- 16:54walking simply being. It doesn't need to be interrupted
- 17:01or multitasking. Presence is a form of self -care.
- 17:07Delaying a response doesn't mean you don't care.
- 17:12It means you're responding with the space of
- 17:15readiness instead of urgency. And there's an
- 17:19important difference there. Being reachable does
- 17:24not mean being available at all times. You are
- 17:28allowed to protect your focus, your peace, and
- 17:32your energy as you need to. You are not at anyone
- 17:38else's beck and call. Digital boundaries aren't
- 17:45about disconnecting from others. They're about
- 17:48reconnecting with yourself first. So I want to
- 17:53offer a simple challenge to carry with you for
- 17:56this next week. Choose one attentional moment
- 18:01and each day to put your device down and step
- 18:06fully into the present moment. It doesn't have
- 18:09to be long. It may even be like 10 minutes without
- 18:14your phone in the morning or a walk where your
- 18:18phone stays in your pocket. eating a meal without
- 18:23scrolling or sitting quietly without reaching
- 18:28for the screen. If I go out to dinner with family
- 18:35and friends, my phone is not at the table. It
- 18:41is in my purse. It is not pulled out for any
- 18:45reason. When I go for a walk, my phone is with
- 18:55me in case of emergencies but only for emergencies
- 18:58only. I'm not scrolling, I'm not texting, and
- 19:02I'm not calling. I'm not even accepting calls.
- 19:06My walk in nature is my walk in nature. Right?
- 19:12I meditate each morning before I go to work.
- 19:16My phone is used as a timer only so I can stop
- 19:19my meditation so I can get out of the door on
- 19:21time But that's the only thing I use it for otherwise
- 19:25this on sleep mode So I intentionally take time
- 19:30out of my day to where my phone is not a priority
- 19:33and it's not in use and So if you're just starting
- 19:39this out, you know, you may feel kind of unsettling
- 19:45It may feel strange. Pay attention to what you're
- 19:51feeling and connect with it and see why you're
- 19:56feeling that way. Right? So you may feel your
- 20:05body tensing up. Right? Or you may feel that
- 20:08you're being pulled in multiple directions of
- 20:12trying to be present and be in the moment without
- 20:15your phone but wanting to reach for your phone
- 20:17right so pay attention to that pay attention
- 20:21to why that's happening right what shifts is
- 20:26when you give your full attention to that moment
- 20:29if your mind reaches for the device out of habit
- 20:34that's okay this isn't about discipline or perfection
- 20:39it's about awareness and choice You may notice
- 20:44that time feels slower, that your breath deepens,
- 20:49that you feel more grounded and more present,
- 20:52maybe even more connected. This challenge isn't
- 20:57about cutting yourself off from the world. It's
- 21:00about giving yourself moments to return to yourself.
- 21:07And as you practice this You may find that you're
- 21:11not creating less time in your day but more spaciousness
- 21:16within your day. You know so this is the part
- 21:28that I didn't talk about enough. Holding the
- 21:31boundary with awareness and care. When you begin
- 21:36honoring yourself in new ways emotions may surface
- 21:40you might feel guilt you may feel pushback from
- 21:45others old habits and familiar patterns may try
- 21:50to reassert themselves this doesn't mean that
- 21:54the boundary is wrong it means you're paying
- 21:58attention to it holding a boundary is a mindful
- 22:02practice it asks you to slow down and notice
- 22:07what you're feeling and respond with intention
- 22:11rather than reflex often the moment you hold
- 22:17a boundary is the moment you become aware of
- 22:21how often you've crossed your own in the past
- 22:25how many times have you crossed one of these
- 22:28healthy boundaries in the past right your body
- 22:31is waking up and you're becoming more aware of
- 22:34that you're becoming more mindful of that. This
- 22:39is where self -appreciation comes in. Acknowledge
- 22:43the courage it takes to choose yourself differently.
- 22:48Recognize that honoring your own needs is not
- 22:52something to rush through. It's something to
- 22:55respect. You don't need to defend your boundary.
- 23:01You don't need to explain it repeatedly. Clarity
- 23:06consistency and compassion especially towards
- 23:10yourself are enough. Each time you hold a boundary
- 23:17with mindfulness and self -love you reinforce
- 23:21the message that your energy matters and over
- 23:25time that practice becomes less about effort
- 23:29and more about trust. boundaries are not walls
- 23:37they are invitations to meet you with respect
- 23:40honesty and presence each time you honor your
- 23:45own energy you strengthen your relationship with
- 23:49yourself and from that grounded place everything
- 23:53else begins to shift how you show up how you
- 23:57connect how you move through the world So love
- 24:04yourself, honor your boundaries, and practice
- 24:10them daily with mindfulness, self -love, and
- 24:14reflection. If this conversation resonated with
- 24:22you, I'd like to continue exploring practices
- 24:24like this. I invite you to stay connected. I
- 24:28share reflections, real life experiences, and
- 24:31grounded guidance. beyond this podcast through
