- 0:00Good morning to you all.
- 0:02It's a wonderful to be here.
- 0:05Honored and humbled
- 0:07to
- 0:09give the Mullins lectures in these days,
- 0:11but also to have the opportunity to
- 0:14bring God's word to you in this
- 0:16beautiful chapel.
- 0:18And uh
- 0:19I don't deserve
- 0:21what Dr. Mohler said about me.
- 0:24Just a sinner saved by grace
- 0:27and I do highly highly respect you,
- 0:31brother. Thank you.
- 0:33I'm going to call this with my wife the
- 0:35the Mohler month because we had so much
- 0:37time at Shepherd's and now we have more
- 0:38time now. So that's that's wonderful.
- 0:42Turn with me, please, to Hebrews 12.
- 0:45Hebrews 12.
- 0:49I'm going to preach to you on two
- 0:51verses.
- 0:53You remember Hebrews 11
- 0:55is this roll call of heroes of faith.
- 1:01And I'm going to pick up on just read
- 1:04the last few verses there
- 1:06that you get a grasp of what those
- 1:09heroes of the Old Testament in faith
- 1:12suffered and then there's a call in
- 1:16verses 1 and 2 of Hebrews 12
- 1:20to run the race.
- 1:22Run the race set before us. I'm calling
- 1:24it run the best race ever.
- 1:29So let's read from Hebrews 11:37
- 1:32through Hebrews 12:2.
- 1:38>> [cough]
- 1:38>> Hear the [clears throat] word of God.
- 1:43They were stoned.
- 1:46They were cut in two.
- 1:50Were tempted.
- 1:52Were slain with a sword.
- 1:55They wandered about in sheepskins and
- 1:57goatskins.
- 1:59Being destitute.
- 2:01Afflicted.
- 2:02Tormented.
- 2:05Of whom the world was not worthy.
- 2:09They wandered in deserts
- 2:11and in mountains and in dens and caves
- 2:14of the earth.
- 2:16And these all having obtained a good
- 2:19report through faith
- 2:23received not the promise.
- 2:26God having provided some better thing
- 2:29for us.
- 2:31That they without us
- 2:33should not be made perfect. Wherefore
- 2:37seeing we also are compassed about with
- 2:39so great a cloud of witnesses.
- 2:43Cloud of witnesses is the Old Testament
- 2:45saints of Hebrews 11.
- 2:47Let us lay aside every weight and the
- 2:50sin which does so easily beset us.
- 2:53And let us run with patience the race
- 2:55that is set before us.
- 2:57Looking into Jesus,
- 2:59the author and finisher of our faith,
- 3:01who for the joy that was set before him
- 3:04endured the cross, despising the shame,
- 3:08and is set down at the right hand of the
- 3:10throne of God.
- 3:14May God bless the reading of His word.
- 3:16Let's have a short prayer.
- 3:20Lord God
- 3:22I pray that by the end of this chapel
- 3:26Thou wilt convince every person in this
- 3:30audience
- 3:31of the importance of running the race
- 3:34negatively by laying aside sin and
- 3:37positively by looking to Jesus.
- 3:41And that it may impact our lives, our
- 3:44ministries
- 3:46past, present and future
- 3:49for good.
- 3:50Make us
- 3:52runners
- 3:53in the best race ever.
- 3:57We pray in Jesus' name.
- 4:00Amen.
- 4:03Never never never
- 4:07give up.
- 4:10Those were the famous words of Winston
- 4:13Churchill
- 4:14in one of his shortest but most
- 4:17important commencement addresses.
- 4:22The message was
- 4:24keep on
- 4:25keeping on.
- 4:28Through cross-bearing
- 4:30through office-bearing
- 4:32through weeping and tears our Lord Jesus
- 4:37preserved. Having loved his own, he
- 4:39loved them
- 4:40to the end.
- 4:42We are called
- 4:44to follow him.
- 4:47You see, it's one thing to begin the
- 4:48Christian life.
- 4:51It's another thing to persevere
- 4:53to the end in the Christian life.
- 4:58Someone asks you how you're saved.
- 5:01Often you will tell them how you were
- 5:02brought to repentance and faith in
- 5:05Christ and you stop
- 5:08as if that's the life of conversion.
- 5:10That's just the beginning.
- 5:12That's just getting in out on the
- 5:14racetrack.
- 5:16You've got to run the race. Conversion
- 5:19is a lifelong process.
- 5:23See, we admire
- 5:25the miracle of Pentecost in Acts 2:4.
- 5:30But we often forget that an equally
- 5:32great miracle is Acts 2:42
- 5:36and they continued
- 5:38steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine
- 5:40and fellowship and in breaking of bread
- 5:42and in prayers.
- 5:46When I was a young man, my dad often
- 5:48said to me
- 5:50after he knew I was called to ministry
- 5:53son
- 5:55remember when you become a minister of
- 5:56the gospel
- 5:58it's relatively easy to begin a new
- 6:01ministry in the church.
- 6:04The challenge is to maintain it.
- 6:07To persevere
- 6:09in zeal for it.
- 6:13Maybe you've discovered that personally.
- 6:16It's one thing to become a Christian.
- 6:19It's another thing to persevere.
- 6:22To endure the sufferings of being a
- 6:25Christian.
- 6:28How how can you
- 6:30endure? How can you persevere in
- 6:32believing in the absence of anything
- 6:34tangible to confirm your faith?
- 6:38How can you go on believing that God is
- 6:41light in the dark night of the soul?
- 6:45How can you persevere in paying the high
- 6:47cost of faithfulness, enduring
- 6:50persecution, affliction and loss
- 6:53merely for the gospel's sake?
- 7:00Every Christian
- 7:02faces numerous discouragements.
- 7:05That's going to be particularly true of
- 7:06you, especially you young men called to
- 7:09ministry. The Puritans used to say
- 7:12God often gives ministers
- 7:16somewhat more afflictions than
- 7:18non-ministers because they need to be
- 7:20identified
- 7:22with all the people of their flock. They
- 7:25need to be a good pastor and so God will
- 7:28often use a man greatly after he's
- 7:31broken him deeply.
- 7:34So
- 7:35how do you
- 7:37carry on when you're in the midst of
- 7:39discouragements, when your hands hang
- 7:41down, when you face personal failures or
- 7:44when others let you down or when
- 7:46providence frustrates your desires?
- 7:50Disappointment
- 7:52can promote discouragement.
- 7:55Discouragement
- 7:56however, brings us to our knees.
- 8:00We feel weak and tired emotionally,
- 8:02spiritually, tempted to give up and we
- 8:04say, "What's the use of continuing to
- 8:06fight temptation when everything seems
- 8:09to work against me?"
- 8:12And we feel like Asaph, "Verily, I've
- 8:14cleansed my heart in vain."
- 8:19So how do you endure?
- 8:23Endure not just through another
- 8:25semester, but endure in running the
- 8:28Christian race all the way
- 8:31to the end.
- 8:33Oh, the answer is simple and profound
- 8:36in Hebrews 12. We endure as Christ
- 8:38endured when he was tempted to surrender
- 8:41in the battle of spiritual warfare. We
- 8:43walk as he walked by his grace and by
- 8:46his strength.
- 8:48That's what Hebrews 12 1 and 2
- 8:52are all about.
- 8:54So I've got three simple points this
- 8:56morning.
- 8:57First
- 9:00this race, this best race ever that we
- 9:02are to run, I want to talk about its
- 9:04mission.
- 9:06Second, its manner.
- 9:08And third, its motives.
- 9:11Mission, manner, motives.
- 9:14So the author to the Hebrews
- 9:17is right on theme here in our text for
- 9:20the whole book. There are actually 96
- 9:23verses in the book
- 9:26of Hebrews. 96 verses that say something
- 9:30like this, keep on keeping on.
- 9:33Endure. Persevere.
- 9:36Why so many?
- 9:39Well, because the Hebrew Christians were
- 9:41being persecuted.
- 9:42They were being hounded.
- 9:44If there were several people that
- 9:46applied for a job
- 9:48the Christian was the one that was sure
- 9:50not to get it.
- 9:51Some of their pastors were at times
- 9:53being thrown into jail
- 9:56for preaching the gospel.
- 9:58The Judaizers
- 10:00were opposed to them. They marginalized
- 10:02them.
- 10:03It was a tough time to be a Christian.
- 10:07And the Judaizers would say, "Come on
- 10:09back to colorful Judaism. What what what
- 10:13do you have in Christianity? Just a man
- 10:14standing behind a desk saying some
- 10:16words.
- 10:17Your religion is boring. Come back to
- 10:19the color of all the Old Testament
- 10:21sacrifices and the blood and and and all
- 10:25the excitement
- 10:26of the ceremonial laws."
- 10:30But the author to the Hebrews is saying,
- 10:32"Don't go back.
- 10:33Even when you're persecuted. Even when
- 10:35you're marginalized. We've got something
- 10:37far better. Far better than the Old
- 10:41Testament saints who lived indeed by
- 10:43faith, but we have a more perfect way.
- 10:48The New Testament way. The way of Jesus
- 10:51Christ."
- 10:53And so the author
- 10:56of Hebrews
- 10:58writes this book
- 11:00to encourage them to go forward in
- 11:04running the Christian
- 11:07race.
- 11:08The theme
- 11:09of our text, the theme of Hebrews is
- 11:14endure.
- 11:15Endure.
- 11:17Keep on going.
- 11:20Now, the word endurance
- 11:23in my big multi-volume Oxford dictionary
- 11:26number one definition
- 11:28is this, to hold up and to remain, to
- 11:30continue on even under pain without
- 11:34flinching. It's a great definition.
- 11:38And that word endurance is actually in
- 11:39all three verses of the beginning of
- 11:42Hebrews 12. We are to run with endurance
- 11:46the race that is set before us. We're to
- 11:48model after Christ who set before him
- 11:51who had joy set before him, but endured
- 11:54the cross.
- 11:55And we're to consider him that endured
- 11:58such contradiction of sinners against
- 12:02himself.
- 12:04So, that's our mission.
- 12:07Much of the Christian life
- 12:11is not smiley joy sitting on a bed of
- 12:13ease. Much of the Christian life is
- 12:16enduring. Enduring. Running the best
- 12:20race ever with
- 12:23patience.
- 12:26So, Hebrews 12:1 and 2
- 12:28the author appears to be using the
- 12:29metaphor of a race having in mind the
- 12:33endurance testing relay races that took
- 12:36place in great coliseums
- 12:39in his day.
- 12:41And these races did not focus on the
- 12:43fastest sprinters
- 12:47but on which runners would actually
- 12:50cross the finish line.
- 12:53They were long races. Think of the the
- 12:56Tour de
- 12:57the France uh
- 12:59biking that goes on for weeks.
- 13:02They were marathon events.
- 13:05The contestants in the Christian race in
- 13:07the time of the author of Hebrews
- 13:10was something that would just go on and
- 13:13on and on and one runner would put the
- 13:16baton into another runner's hand
- 13:19and the race would seem to go on
- 13:21forever.
- 13:22And there would be fans in the stands
- 13:25cheering on the runners not to give up.
- 13:28That's the picture he's painting here.
- 13:31The Old Testament saints he's saying are
- 13:32like a cloud of witnesses around us.
- 13:36And they're encouraging us
- 13:38as it were by their own lives, by their
- 13:40own testimonies, the testimonies of
- 13:42Hebrews 11
- 13:44not to give up.
- 13:46To persevere. In fact, if they
- 13:48persevered when they were cut in two
- 13:52when they were tormented and wandered in
- 13:55deserts and mountains
- 13:57and really hadn't seen the cross yet
- 14:02how in the world, Hebrew Christians, can
- 14:04you
- 14:06stop running?
- 14:08How in the world can you give up? How in
- 14:10the world could you return to Judaism
- 14:13when you can look back on the finished
- 14:15work of Christ?
- 14:17When you can see so much more than they
- 14:20could see?
- 14:22Keep on keeping
- 14:25on.
- 14:27So, this race of endurance is to be run
- 14:30with patience, he says.
- 14:31That is steadily
- 14:33deliberately, actively every day.
- 14:38And today, of course, we have so many
- 14:40spiritual disciplines and means of grace
- 14:42by which we can run this race. Reading
- 14:45and searching the scriptures every day.
- 14:47Through personal intercessory prayer
- 14:50every day. Through reading sound
- 14:52literature every day. Fellowship among
- 14:55the saints every day. Keep Sabbath every
- 14:59week.
- 15:00The Christian life, you see, is not
- 15:02passive.
- 15:03We are to work out our own salvation
- 15:05with fear and trembling using the
- 15:07spiritual means that God has provided to
- 15:10run the best race ever.
- 15:15So, that's our mission.
- 15:17That's our mission. Now, what's our
- 15:19what's our manner? How how do we do it?
- 15:24Well,
- 15:26Hebrews 12:1
- 15:28tells us how we're to do it negatively
- 15:30and verse two how we're to do it
- 15:32positively.
- 15:34So, negatively
- 15:35we are to lay aside every weight, that
- 15:38is every hindrance
- 15:40and the sin which does so easily beset
- 15:43us.
- 15:46What does that mean?
- 15:47Well,
- 15:50there are actually three interpretations
- 15:52of the words the sin that so easily
- 15:53besets us.
- 15:55The first interpretation
- 15:57is that
- 15:59it's unbelief.
- 16:00Unbelief is the mother of all sins.
- 16:03And we just have a whole chapter
- 16:06of the Old Testament heroes of faith who
- 16:08all lived by faith, by faith, by faith
- 16:12and our sin, your sin
- 16:15Hebrew Christians, our sin today is that
- 16:18we falter in running, faltering that
- 16:21steady jogging in the Christian race,
- 16:23that marathon
- 16:25when we live by unbelief and not by
- 16:27faith.
- 16:29It is the sin
- 16:31that so easily besets us.
- 16:35Second interpretation is that the sin
- 16:38simply is all sin because all sin is
- 16:41monstrous.
- 16:42All sin is anti-God.
- 16:46Stephen Charnock, one of the Puritans,
- 16:48said
- 16:49"At that moment
- 16:52when we sin against our conscience,
- 16:55against God, knowingly sin, at that
- 16:58moment we are practical atheists saying
- 17:02God is not because all sin
- 17:06is anti-God."
- 17:09Sin is a monster.
- 17:11Sin is our great enemy.
- 17:14Jeremiah Burroughs, another Puritan,
- 17:15said this.
- 17:18"The smallest sin
- 17:20is a greater evil
- 17:22than the greatest affliction."
- 17:25We're to hate sin with passion because
- 17:28we love the Lord Jesus, our savior and
- 17:31Lord
- 17:33with zeal.
- 17:34You can't
- 17:36be strong in Christ
- 17:39and not be a hater
- 17:41of sin
- 17:42against him.
- 17:44And so
- 17:45it's all sin.
- 17:50But then there's a third view.
- 17:53We're to lay aside
- 17:54the sin
- 17:56that so easily besets us.
- 18:01And this view means
- 18:04you have your own weaknesses, I have
- 18:07mine.
- 18:08Our forefathers, reformers, Puritans
- 18:12used to call them darling sins
- 18:15bosom sins
- 18:17besetting sins.
- 18:20That is to say
- 18:22I might have certain weaknesses that I
- 18:24have to avoid certain things.
- 18:27Whereas you
- 18:30have other weaknesses have no trouble
- 18:32with the things I have trouble with
- 18:34and you need to avoid your own set of
- 18:36things.
- 18:37And they can be things that maybe
- 18:39outwardly don't seem to be
- 18:41sin.
- 18:44Maybe you live with excessive fear
- 18:46or worry
- 18:48or love of things
- 18:49or cares of this life.
- 18:52Maybe it's
- 18:54connected with your recreational
- 18:55pursuits.
- 18:57Maybe it's connected with some lust of
- 18:58the flesh.
- 19:00Whatever it is, as you're running the
- 19:02Christian race, that tends to entangle
- 19:05you. You see that that that sin that
- 19:08seems to trip you up.
- 19:11That entangles you.
- 19:13It clings to you.
- 19:15It comes out onto the racetrack with you
- 19:17and hangs on your neck and clings to you
- 19:19like like like skin-tight clothing. That
- 19:22sin.
- 19:25You need to lay aside. Need to avoid it.
- 19:28Need to
- 19:29run from it.
- 19:33There was an old Scottish divine, Ralph
- 19:35Erskine, who said
- 19:38"The way to approach sin is either fight
- 19:40or flight.
- 19:42You can fight it if you're strong in
- 19:44that area. Beat back the devil. But if
- 19:46you're weak in that area, you got to
- 19:47flee from it. You got to run from it."
- 19:52So, if you're a recovering alcoholic,
- 19:55God has not called you to evangelize in
- 19:58bars
- 20:00because you'll be too tempted.
- 20:03You could be sucked back in.
- 20:07So, what is What is your What is your
- 20:09sin?
- 20:10What is your weakness?
- 20:15What are you giving a little open window
- 20:18space in your life for that you
- 20:21shouldn't be that you should just shut
- 20:23the window on?
- 20:27When I was a young man,
- 20:29mine was pride in playing basketball,
- 20:31and I had to quit
- 20:33at the at the peak of my career
- 20:36because it became an idol.
- 20:38You maybe can play basketball without
- 20:40that temptation, fine.
- 20:43But you see, the point is this.
- 20:46Whatever sin besets you,
- 20:51lay it aside.
- 20:53I had a man come to me one time, and he
- 20:55He was weeping walking into my study. He
- 20:57said, "I got this bosom sin I can't get
- 20:59rid of. Help me." And I said, "Well,
- 21:01what is it?" He said, "I can't stop
- 21:03listening to country music."
- 21:08And
- 21:09you as a counselor, you're never
- 21:10supposed to look surprised.
- 21:12But I mean, I hardly know what country
- 21:14music is. I mean, that's the last thing
- 21:16in the world that would tempt me.
- 21:19But for him, it was very real.
- 21:21Very real.
- 21:24And so, we worked on a plan
- 21:26how he could avoid country music. It was
- 21:28besetting him.
- 21:30It interrupted
- 21:32his walk with Christ. So, which of these
- 21:34three interpretations is right?
- 21:38All three, maybe.
- 21:40Because sin is monstrous
- 21:42in every form.
- 21:44So, we need When we get out on the
- 21:45racetrack as a Christian, we need to
- 21:47battle our unbelief, we need to battle
- 21:49our bosom sin, and we need to battle all
- 21:51sin.
- 21:54Hate it.
- 21:55That's the way to run the Christian
- 21:58race. Repent of it,
- 22:01but stay in that repentant frame of
- 22:03mind. As Luther said in one of his first
- 22:05few theses, God will have his people
- 22:08live a lifelong
- 22:10repentance.
- 22:13Lifelong
- 22:14repentance. Are you doing that? Are you
- 22:16repenting every day
- 22:19of the sins you commit? That's the way
- 22:22to run this race.
- 22:25And so, when you combine all three, you
- 22:27see, then you see sin as your mortal
- 22:29enemy.
- 22:31And you say to yourself, like Paul says
- 22:33to us in Romans 6:11, "Likewise,
- 22:38consider yourself
- 22:41to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive
- 22:45unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord."
- 22:49Do you know that Martin Luther or
- 22:52rather, Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones said that
- 22:55this text, Romans 6:11, helped him more
- 22:58in running his Christian race than any
- 23:00other text in the whole Bible.
- 23:03How so?
- 23:05Well, he said, "When I'm tempted to sin,
- 23:07I just say,
- 23:08'What? Are you kidding me?
- 23:11Sin's not my master. Christ is my
- 23:13master. I got no business sinning. I got
- 23:16no business sinning against the savior
- 23:19who died for me and who now intercedes
- 23:21for me at the Father's right hand moment
- 23:24by moment.
- 23:25Be gone, sin. You're not my master. I'm
- 23:28dead indeed unto sin, the dominion of
- 23:30sin, and I'm alive unto God through
- 23:32Jesus Christ our Lord, and you're not
- 23:34taking that away from me, Satan. Be
- 23:36gone.'"
- 23:38That's the way
- 23:40to treat sin.
- 23:42So, every every morning when you get up,
- 23:46this is a very important part, I
- 23:48believe, of our morning prayers. Lord,
- 23:50keep me from sin all day. Turn my eyes,
- 23:53my ears, my heart away from every
- 23:56temptation. Help me to live wholly and
- 23:59solely for thee and thy glory today.
- 24:03Every moment, every thought, every word,
- 24:05every action.
- 24:07Will we fail? Of course, we will fail.
- 24:10But every night we repent of it.
- 24:12And we begin a new day
- 24:14longing for that day when we will be
- 24:17sin-free forever around the throne of
- 24:21the Lamb.
- 24:23But you run the race
- 24:25all the way to the end.
- 24:29I'm I'm convinced that one of the
- 24:30greatest problems of Christendom today,
- 24:33and it's big time in America, is a kind
- 24:36of practical antinomianism that looks at
- 24:38sin lightly. Says, "Oh, well, God's
- 24:40going to forgive me. He's a God of
- 24:41grace."
- 24:43And you don't hate sin
- 24:46like God hates sin.
- 24:50And you see, what you want to do when
- 24:51you run this race is you want to have
- 24:53the same kind of thoughts of sin that a
- 24:55holy, holy, holy God that we just sang
- 24:58about thinks of sin.
- 25:01So, that's a negative. But you can never
- 25:03run the Christian race with any
- 25:05semblance of success only by the
- 25:07negative.
- 25:08You need a greater power.
- 25:11As Thomas Chalmers put it, a greater
- 25:13power that takes you away from the
- 25:15affections
- 25:17by the positive The affections of the
- 25:19world by the positive.
- 25:21And that's exactly what he does in verse
- 25:23two. He says, "We are to run the race
- 25:25setting aside the sin which so easily
- 25:27besets us by looking into Jesus,
- 25:31the author and the finisher
- 25:33of our faith."
- 25:37When I was in high school many years
- 25:38ago, I also ran track in addition to to
- 25:41basketball, and our coach would often
- 25:44say to us, I ran the I ran the what was
- 25:46then called the 440,
- 25:48and
- 25:49basically, you run as fast as you can in
- 25:51that,
- 25:52and and you have a burst of energy near
- 25:54the end. But he would say, "You You You
- 25:57look You look at me. I'll be standing at
- 25:59the end of the race. You run this one
- 26:02for the coach,
- 26:04and don't ever look as you're coming
- 26:06around that last bend. Don't ever look
- 26:07back. You'll lose a half a step if you
- 26:09look back to see where the other guys
- 26:11are. You just look at me. You run this
- 26:14one for me with all your zeal and all
- 26:16your might and all your power."
- 26:19Yes, coach.
- 26:22Well,
- 26:25the only way you can run full bore
- 26:28your whole lifetime
- 26:30is by looking to Jesus.
- 26:33But in this case, of course, it's a
- 26:34marathon, so you're running steadily,
- 26:36keeping your eye on Jesus, keeping your
- 26:38eye on the positive. And
- 26:40you see, by that, you not only will hate
- 26:44sin, but you by loving Christ, by
- 26:47viewing him as the model runner who went
- 26:49before you, and by viewing him as the
- 26:51coach who coaches you along through his
- 26:54word and through all the spiritual
- 26:55disciplines,
- 26:57you, like the Old Testament saints, will
- 26:59live by faith in the promises of God
- 27:02surrounded by them as a crowd of
- 27:04witnesses cheering you on.
- 27:08But ultimately, it's Jesus, your
- 27:11uniquely qualified supplier and
- 27:14sustainer of faith, who by his spirit
- 27:17will evoke and stimulate your faith to
- 27:21run for him.
- 27:23He is the pioneer
- 27:26and the perfecter of our salvation. He
- 27:29will not allow a single one of his
- 27:31children to fall to the side of the road
- 27:34because he's a finisher of the faith of
- 27:36his runners. He who perseveres to the
- 27:39end will persevere with you, too, dear
- 27:41believer.
- 27:43But run the race
- 27:46by looking
- 27:47to him.
- 27:48He's the origin.
- 27:51He's the continuation.
- 27:53He's the completion
- 27:54of the power of your ability, God-given
- 27:57ability, to run the race to the end.
- 28:01He's his ex- supreme exponent
- 28:05of your faith.
- 28:09My mother died at 92.
- 28:11When she was 90,
- 28:14she was a very God-fearing woman, a
- 28:16prayer warrior,
- 28:18she got dementia,
- 28:20pretty serious.
- 28:23Six weeks before she died,
- 28:25I'm reading her Revelation 21,
- 28:28and I asked her such a foolish question.
- 28:32When I got to the verse,
- 28:34"I am Alpha and Omega."
- 28:37I said to her, "Mother, do you know
- 28:40Do you know what that means?"
- 28:42I I forgot for a moment she had
- 28:44dementia.
- 28:45Uh
- 28:46Of course, she's not going to know. I
- 28:48mean, Alpha and Omega, and she didn't
- 28:50even know my name. She couldn't remember
- 28:52my dad. She
- 28:54But all of a sudden, she gets this
- 28:55incredible
- 28:57flash of
- 28:59insight
- 29:01that only the Holy Spirit could give her
- 29:02that moment. And she said, "Oh, honey."
- 29:05She called everybody honey cuz she she
- 29:06knew nobody's name.
- 29:08"Honey, doesn't that mean
- 29:10that Jesus is the beginning of our faith
- 29:12and the end of our faith?" And then she
- 29:14did a little I said, "Jesus." And she
- 29:16added to the text. And she said,
- 29:18"And he's everything in between."
- 29:21I go, "Yes, Mother. That's it. That's a
- 29:23better answer than I was going to give
- 29:25you."
- 29:26And you see, that is how a Christian
- 29:30runs.
- 29:32He who began the good work in me that I
- 29:34could never begin in myself, he is now
- 29:36interceding for me at the right hand of
- 29:38the Father. I will continue running by
- 29:41his grace, and he will grant me to come
- 29:44to completion. I will look to him. I
- 29:46will look away from sin and look to him.
- 29:48I will hate sin and love Christ.
- 29:51I will persevere
- 29:53to the end.
- 29:55By the grace of God.
- 29:59Now,
- 30:00that raises, however,
- 30:01my third point.
- 30:04What really can keep motivating me to
- 30:06run this race?
- 30:09And that's the rest of the text.
- 30:12Actually,
- 30:13there's two sets of motivations here.
- 30:16And the first set of motivations has
- 30:18four parts to it. It's the example of
- 30:20Christ. Look at verse two with me.
- 30:23Four ways we have to be motivated by
- 30:25looking to Christ to keep on running.
- 30:28Looking unto Jesus, the author and
- 30:30finisher of our faith, who for the joy
- 30:32that was set before him endured the
- 30:34cross.
- 30:35So, first of all, we're motivated by
- 30:38what he endured. By what he endured.
- 30:43He was in the naked flame of his
- 30:45father's wrath for six long hours on the
- 30:48cross.
- 30:50He endured to the end even through the
- 30:53the cry of dereliction, "My God, my God,
- 30:56why hast thou forsaken me?"
- 30:59He endured even as he bore the essence
- 31:02of what hell is on the cross, suffering
- 31:06in such a way, so compacted, so
- 31:08infinite, so horrendous as to be
- 31:11seemingly unsustainable.
- 31:14But he endured, undergirded by his
- 31:17divinity in his suffering humanity.
- 31:20He endured the cross even when abandoned
- 31:23or felt abandoned by God.
- 31:28Think about it.
- 31:29When the son most needed encouragement,
- 31:32no voice cried from heaven, "This is my
- 31:34beloved son." When he most needed
- 31:36reassurance, no one said, "I am well
- 31:38pleased."
- 31:40No grace extended, no favor shown, no
- 31:43comfort administered, no part of the cup
- 31:46of the father's wrath
- 31:48against the sins of his people that he
- 31:50was bearing removed.
- 31:53God is only present as one displeased,
- 31:56as one bearing down upon his own son. He
- 31:58bruised his own son with profound wrath.
- 32:03And every detail of it, every every
- 32:06detail of it declares the irrationality,
- 32:09the heinousness, the dread character of
- 32:12sin. And yet he endured the cross to the
- 32:14end.
- 32:18And you can't endure your
- 32:20little crosses compared to his big
- 32:22cross?
- 32:26We look to his cross
- 32:29so that we can endure our crosses.
- 32:31We get motivated by what he's done for
- 32:34us, so that we're willing to deny
- 32:36ourselves, take up our crosses, and
- 32:39follow him.
- 32:42Second motivation is by what he rejoiced
- 32:45in. You notice that? Who for the joy
- 32:47that was set before him endured the
- 32:50cross. You see, he rejoiced under the
- 32:53cross knowing he would ultimately be the
- 32:55vic- the victor in the battle against
- 32:58the powers of evil, soon be resurrected
- 33:01by his father, taken home to glory
- 33:04to receive his promised reward.
- 33:08So, the joy that was set before him
- 33:11was the joy of his own homecoming, the
- 33:13joy of reunion with his father, the joy
- 33:15of being crowned with honor and glory
- 33:17and having all things put under his
- 33:18feet. It was the joy of bringing many
- 33:20sons to glory. It was the joy of saying,
- 33:23"Here am I, Father." A joy that still
- 33:26awaits him in his fullness, and all
- 33:29those that thou has given unto me.
- 33:34Because Christ endured to the end
- 33:37with joy,
- 33:39there won't be a single empty chair
- 33:43in heaven.
- 33:46And so we
- 33:48we should persevere remembering this
- 33:51life is just a little blip on the
- 33:53horizon of eternity
- 33:55remembering
- 33:56that we will soon be with him whose eyes
- 34:00we have never seen
- 34:03nor has it entered into our heart what
- 34:05God has prepared for those who love him.
- 34:07Our future is to be spiritually married
- 34:10to Christ forever. We will one day be
- 34:13sin-free, one day be unable to sin, one
- 34:16day to be focused wholly on Christ
- 34:19without ever having a distraction.
- 34:22Oh, the joy
- 34:24of the perfect place that Jonathan
- 34:26Edwards called
- 34:29the love of God in heaven.
- 34:32Because therefore heaven is a world of
- 34:36perfect love.
- 34:39Be motivated by where you're going. Be
- 34:42motivated by the end of the race that is
- 34:46soon coming.
- 34:49Thirdly,
- 34:51we're motivated not only by what Christ
- 34:52endured and what he rejoiced in, but by
- 34:55what he despised.
- 34:57Isn't that interesting? He despised the
- 34:59shame, verse two says.
- 35:02Think about that.
- 35:03He's hanging naked on a main
- 35:06thoroughfare going out of Jerusalem. No
- 35:08doubt there's mothers and with their
- 35:11little kids walking by and saying, "Look
- 35:13at those three men on the cross. They're
- 35:15they're traitors, they're treasoner
- 35:17trea- they committed treason. They're
- 35:18murderers or whatever. They're notable
- 35:21sinners. Don't ever be like them."
- 35:24He was despised. He was despised by the
- 35:26Romans, despised by the Jews.
- 35:29They cast all kinds of accusations into
- 35:31his teeth even when he's on the cross
- 35:34for you.
- 35:39How could he do it?
- 35:41Well, because he loved and feared God.
- 35:45And he loved you
- 35:48more than he feared the frowns of men.
- 35:54John Brown says,
- 35:56"The fear of God means that you value
- 35:58the smiles
- 36:00of God more than the smiles of men.
- 36:05And you value the frowns of God also
- 36:07more than the frowns of men."
- 36:10And because he knew he was doing his
- 36:12father's will,
- 36:15he despised the shame.
- 36:18Stop also in your in with regard to your
- 36:21future ministry, stop fearing the faces
- 36:24of men and fear the living God.
- 36:29And you'll save yourself a lot of sin, a
- 36:31lot of heartache,
- 36:34a lot of mistakes
- 36:37in your life. Be motivated
- 36:39by this shame despiser,
- 36:43the Lord Jesus. And then finally,
- 36:46we get motivated by what he's doing
- 36:48right now.
- 36:50Notice the end of verse two. Is set down
- 36:53at the right hand of the throne of God.
- 36:56And five chapters earlier it said, "He
- 36:58ever lives to make intercession for us."
- 37:01Have you ever thought about that? He
- 37:02ever lives every single second to to
- 37:06intercede for all his children
- 37:08corporately in one mass, of course, but
- 37:11also individually cuz he's infinite in
- 37:13his capacity. He can remember
- 37:16millions and millions and millions, all
- 37:19his children at the same time.
- 37:23So, there's never a second in your life,
- 37:26if you're a true believer, where he's
- 37:27not remembering you, interceding for
- 37:30you.
- 37:31What a what an amazing motivation this
- 37:33ought to be.
- 37:35Everything
- 37:36shall work together for my good. He's
- 37:39always in control in my life. All things
- 37:42work together for good to those who love
- 37:44God.
- 37:45That's the whole first set of
- 37:46motivations. Then let me conclude with
- 37:48one more motivation. It's the witness of
- 37:51the saints around us. Go back to 1A.
- 37:56If I if I were to fall,
- 38:00I wouldn't I wouldn't only destroy my
- 38:02church,
- 38:04I wouldn't only
- 38:06destroy
- 38:07or damage or blaspheme the name of God,
- 38:12but I would I would destroy so much
- 38:14more.
- 38:16I would if I think of my father and my
- 38:18mother now in glory,
- 38:22wow,
- 38:24how I'd be sinning against them.
- 38:27How I'd be sinning against all kinds of
- 38:29people.
- 38:30And
- 38:32who are in my stands.
- 38:34You see, the New Testament saints had
- 38:36the Old Testament saints in their
- 38:37stands, but we have so much more.
- 38:40We've got all the New Testament saints
- 38:42in our stands. I'd be sinning against
- 38:44Paul and Peter and and all the writers
- 38:47of the New Testament. And and what about
- 38:50the 2,000 years of church history?
- 38:53It's
- 38:54there's thousands and thousands of
- 38:56people in my stands from church history.
- 39:01Cheering me on.
- 39:03Saying, "Keep running the race. Keep on
- 39:05keeping on."
- 39:09Martin Luther said, "Most of my best
- 39:11friends are dead and they're sitting on
- 39:12my shelves
- 39:14and they're continuing to press me on in
- 39:17running the Christian race."
- 39:21The Bible, of course.
- 39:23I mean, doesn't Enoch motivate you? He
- 39:26walked with God. Doesn't David motivate
- 39:28you in the Psalms? Yes, the Old
- 39:30Testament saints are in our stands. The
- 39:32New Testament saints are in our stands.
- 39:34The the
- 39:35all those in church history are in our
- 39:37stands. And living people are in our
- 39:40stands right now cheering us on.
- 39:45Your own local church.
- 39:48They're with you, but they're also in
- 39:49your stands encouraging you, I hope.
- 39:52Keep running. Keep running. Keep
- 39:53running. And then those near and dear to
- 39:56us.
- 39:58Often while I'm preaching, I hear my
- 40:00dad's voice ringing in my ears. Son, you
- 40:03can never preach enough of Christ. Keep
- 40:05Keep on preaching him.
- 40:08He's in my stands.
- 40:12Sometimes I'm driving to church.
- 40:15Just with my wife.
- 40:17Kids are all married now.
- 40:19And I'm a little quiet.
- 40:22My wife says,
- 40:23"You got it again, don't you?"
- 40:26Yeah.
- 40:28Who am I?
- 40:29Who am I
- 40:30to be the mouthpiece of the living God?
- 40:34I
- 40:35To speak the word of God, it's a huge
- 40:38thing. I don't care if you've been
- 40:39preaching for 50 years.
- 40:41You never get used to it. It's always
- 40:43overwhelming.
- 40:46And you always feel like you can't do
- 40:47it.
- 40:49And she'll
- 40:51She'll put her She'll put her hand on my
- 40:53wrist right here.
- 40:54She'll say, "Honey,
- 40:57I'll help you.
- 40:59One more time.
- 41:01Uh one more time."
- 41:04She's in my stands.
- 41:06You see.
- 41:08Whose stands are you in?
- 41:11Are you encouragers to others as you
- 41:13run?
- 41:14As you hand off the baton to others in
- 41:17the race.
- 41:18And who's in your stands? Consider
- 41:21Consider the importance of being
- 41:23motivated not only by those four ways of
- 41:27that are Christocentric, but also by all
- 41:30the followers of Christ throughout all
- 41:32the ages down to the living people in
- 41:35your church today.
- 41:37And the living Christians you know in
- 41:39society.
- 41:43Run the race.
- 41:46I often say to our students, let me
- 41:48close with this. I say,
- 41:51"You know what?
- 41:52I just I'm really worried about you.
- 41:56I I pray that none of you None of you
- 41:58None of you
- 42:00will fall and disqualify yourself
- 42:03from ministry."
- 42:05We've had We've had one student over the
- 42:06years has fallen to serious sin.
- 42:09And uh Oh, what a
- 42:12It's like a sword going through my
- 42:13heart. Sword going through my heart.
- 42:17Let those around you motivate you. Let
- 42:20your fellow students motivate you. Your
- 42:22faculty motivate you. And faculty
- 42:24motivate each other. Run the race. Run
- 42:28the race all the way to
- 42:31the end.
- 42:33Well, I close then with this
- 42:34illustration. In Grand Rapids, where we
- 42:37live,
- 42:38there's not much touristy attractions,
- 42:41but there is the Gerald Ford Museum.
- 42:44And uh when Gerald Ford died,
- 42:47we were with thousands of other people
- 42:50on both sides of the highway as the
- 42:53limousine
- 42:55went from the airport down to the Gerald
- 42:56Ford Museum, where he wanted to be
- 42:58buried.
- 42:59He grew up in Grand Rapids.
- 43:01And
- 43:03there was a boy across the highway
- 43:06that had a sign above his head that was
- 43:08bigger than he was, and he was happy. He
- 43:10was
- 43:11moving that sign like this, and the sign
- 43:13said, "Welcome home, President Ford."
- 43:18I thought to myself, isn't that amazing?
- 43:20This little boy is happy to welcome home
- 43:22a dead body.
- 43:27But how amazing will it be on that day
- 43:30when the stands will be filled
- 43:34for miles and miles and miles, speaking
- 43:36figuratively now,
- 43:38and you
- 43:40will walk down that highway
- 43:43through the open gates of Beulah.
- 43:47And there'll be millions of people to
- 43:48greet you.
