- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. Ready for episode 188? Luna: Always ready, Lucas. I've been practicing my banana-buying phrases from last time. Lucas: Nice, so you can survive at the market. But today we're shifting to feelings — emotions. Luna: Oh, that's useful. I want to tell my Ethiopian friend when I'm happy or sad. Lucas: Exactly. So let's start with 'I am happy' in Amharic. Lucas: Listen carefully: ደስ ብሎኛል. Luna: ደስ ብሎኛል. Lucas: Good. It means 'I am happy.' Let's break it down. The word ደስ means happiness or joy. Luna: ደስ. And then ብሎኛል? Lucas: It's all one unit for now. Just practice the whole phrase. Try it again. Luna: ደስ ብሎኛል. Lucas: Yes. Now for the opposite — 'I am sad' is አዝኛለሁ. Luna: አዝኛለሁ. That's a bit longer. አዝኛለሁ. Lucas: Perfect. So if you're feeling down, you say አዝኛለሁ. Luna: I can think of times I'd use that. But what if I want to ask someone else how they're feeling? Lucas: Great question. To ask a male friend 'Are you happy?' you say: ደስ ብሎሃል? Luna: ደስ ብሎሃል? That sounds like a question. Lucas: Exactly. The tone rises at the end. Repeat after me: ደስ ብሎሃል? Luna: ደስ ብሎሃል? Lucas: Now let's put them in a little scene. Imagine I'm your friend and I ask you ደስ ብሎሃል? You can answer ደስ ብሎኛል. Luna: So if you ask me that, I should say ደስ ብሎኛል. Unless I'm sad, then አዝኛለሁ. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice that exchange. I'll ask: ደስ ብሎሃል? Luna: ደስ ብሎኛል. Lucas: You sound happy. Now try the sad answer. Luna: አዝኛለሁ. But I'm not sad now, just practicing. Lucas: Of course. Now, I want to remind you that this show is free because of listeners like you. We keep it ad-free, and if Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Amharic, you can support us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It's a simple way to keep the lessons coming. Luna: Yeah, every bit helps. Even a coffee. Now back to emotions — I want to practice asking you. Luna: Lucas, ደስ ብሎሃል? Lucas: ደስ ብሎኛል. I'm always happy when we do these episodes. Luna: Aww. And if someone is sad, how would we console them? Just use አዝኛለሁ? Lucas: For now, yes. But it's a start. Let's do a quick review. Say 'I am happy' one more time. Luna: ደስ ብሎኛል. Lucas: And 'I am sad'? Luna: አዝኛለሁ. Lucas: And to ask 'Are you happy?' to a male friend? Luna: ደስ ብሎሃል? Lucas: Perfect. You've got them. Keep practicing and we'll build on these next time. Thanks for joining us on Learn Amharic with Fexingo. Luna: See you next episode, everyone. Practice these phrases and ደስ ብሎኛል!
